With 2015 marking the 35th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, organizers at various Terry Fox Runs in Toronto and around the world are hoping this year’s fundraising event is bigger and better than ever. In 1980, Fox, who had lost his leg to cancer as a teen, ran from St. John’s, NL, to the outskirts of Thunder Bay, ON, to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. His plan to run across all of Canada was stopped only when his cancer returned and spread to his lungs. The Terry Fox Foundation has its eye on raising $35 million – essentially one dollar per Canadian – across the country. The UCC/Forest Hill run is one of the foundation’s biggest contributors, with five- and 10-kilometre routes suitable for walkers, runners, cyclists, inline skaters and those with strollers or mobility devices. “We usually get about 1,500 people coming out and this year with the 35th (anniversary) we think we’ll get more,” said UCC/Forest Hill Terry Fox Run organizer Chris Henry. “We’ve >>>MULTIPLE, page 6

Helping out artisans from Mongolia, Colombia

Annex-based social enterprise hopes to expand their empowering formula JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With just a few days to go in their crowdfunding campaign, Nahuel Arruda-Starzenski and Wendy Baldwin are close to reaching their goal, which will help them bring their social enterprise to at-risk communities. The duo are behind The Fabric of Humanity, a notfor-profit based out of the Centre for Social Innovation in the Annex. The Fabric of Humanity empowers people living in poverty by having them make clothes and purses, with proceeds going both to those who make the clothes and their communities. Arruda-Starzenski came up with the concept while working at the United Nations. He saw a display holding a UNICEF tie that was being sold to help with humanitarian aid. “I thought at the time

‘why don’t they do more?’” he recalled. “It wasn’t until a number of years later that I started to put two and two together and realized you can make clothing to bridge a number of things like communities from around the world and the unknown of other people.” Arruda-Starzenski brings a financial background – he worked on public-private partnerships later in his career – while Baldwin brings years of expertise in the clothing design industry. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work in almost every area of the (clothing) industry, and I’ve worked extensively with private labels, so I understand customers and the importance of creating what customers want instead of just creating your own fantasy,” Baldwin said. Thus far, The Fabric of Humanity has brought opportunities to two groups facing challenges. They have

engaged seamstresses in Tado, Colombia, a region beset by the National Liberation Army, a guerrilla group that has been known to kidnap people to further its cause. “I was there for six days and I’ve never been so scared in all my life,” Arruda-Starzenski said. “We’re going to use a big chunk of this money (from

the Kickstarter campaign) to go to Colombia, train some people there and give them the equipment and materials they need.” Those employed in Tado will sew T-shirts, which The Fabric of Humanity will sell. Proceeds from those shirts will go toward supporting the workers and revitalizing

the town. The Fabric of Humanity has also partnered with a group in Mongolia who are working with nomads to create high-end yak hair cardigans, with purses made of yak hair also on offer. The nomads of Mongolia are reliant on yaks for survival, and making and selling garments from their fur will bring more economic viability to their way of life. “We lived with the nomads for three days – two nights – and saw them hand-combing the hair from the yaks,” Baldwin said. “They brush the hair out when the yaks are moulting anyway, so it’s completely ethical, almost like they’re giving the yak a back scratch.” Arruda-Starzenski and Baldwin said they have plans

to add QR codes to the labels of the clothing, and by scanning the codes, buyers will be able to actually see the people who made their individual garment and vote on how they want their philanthropic dollars to benefit the community they are supporting. While the duo plans to go forward with The Fabric of Humanity, whether or not they reach their Kickstarter goal – they were about $1,000 shy as of The Mirror’s press time and have until Sunday, Sept. 20 to reach their goal – more money will mean more impact. Their business model can be replicated in various communities around the world, with product lines varying according to the skills and materials on hand. “I’d love to be able to go to Jordan and set up in Syrian refugee camps there,” ArrudaStarzenski said. The plan could even work closer to home, in at-risk communities here in Canada.

Time capsule found in nick of time to mark 100th anniversary JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The old North Toronto Railway Station marked 100 years on Wednesday, Sept. 9 with the unveiling of a time capsule buried beneath a cornerstone when it was first being built in 1915. Rumours of a time capsule being buried underneath the building – now the Summerhill LCBO – were known for years, but the small copper box was not actually unearthed until Tuesday, a day before the 100th anniversary celebrations. “It’s the 100 year anniver-

sary today and we’d really hoped to be able to open it up on the 100th,” said Summerhill LCBO general manager Reg Garner. “I came to the store around five years ago and read and researched the history of the building. I read about the time capsule and wanted to find it, and when I told Paul Oberman (the late head of Woodcliffe Landmark Properties, the company that owns the building) he was all for it.” The plan to find the time capsule was understandably not front-of-mind for a while, but Woodcliffe began

ing but they couldn’t find anything because the rock was so thick and the walls were so sturdy,” Garner said. The crew hired to uncover the capsule, Historic Restorations, was stymied until late August. “A week ago last Friday, they found old pictures showing where the cornerstone was laid in 1915, so that

helped a lot,” Garner said. It took seven days of work for crews to actually dig out the time capsule. When it was opened on Wednesday, it offered a glimpse into Toronto a century ago, with multiple newspapers from the day it was first buried, a map of Toronto, 1915 stamps and coins, financial statements from CP rail, blueprints of the station and more. The time capsule was replaced by a new one – also in a copper box – featuring newspapers from Sept. 9, 2015 and items that recognize the old railway station’s current role.

Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, NL on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research. But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing. Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community. It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you. The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day. While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Fox’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues. For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved. Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself. “It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Mayor John Tory’s decision to not hold the 2024 Summer Olympics shows civic prudence

T

he roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference. If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness. On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence. It was a good fit. We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games. Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and in any case, there are better things with which to occupy our time just now than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a mas-

david nickle the city sive international Olympic event. This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September – meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community representatives, speaking with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters. Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic. Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot

resist. I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect. Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.” If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in

agreement at least in the broad strokes. Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and therefore we ought not try. On this, Tory and the former mayor seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might well bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or indeed something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future – and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party. It is the sort of message that anyone should be proud to deliver with city hall in the backdrop.

Multiple Terry Fox Runs taking place locally >>>from page 1 got a great community here and we’re expecting to raise about $220,000.” The run will kick off following presentations from cancer survivors and members of the Terry Fox Research Institute, the research arm of the Terry Fox Foundation. Television celebrity Mike Holmes will host the event. To the east of that run, participants in the Mooredale Terry Fox Run will also put their shoes, bike tires

or inline skates to the test on their choice of 2.5-, five- or 10-kilometre courses. Ravine and city route “We have a route that goes through the ravine and another one that’s more city-based and goes past the stately homes of Rosedale,” said walk organizer Ann-Marie Anderson. “We’ll have a guide going along who can tell them about the houses as they’re going by.”

She pointed out, as much as the annual Terry Fox Run aims to raise funds, it is just as important to raise awareness and to maintain Terry Fox’s legacy. “There are people – maybe they’re new Canadians or maybe they’re young people – who have never even heard of Terry Fox. We want to keep Terry’s memory alive.” For information on the runs, including how to get involved or how to sponsor a participant, visit www. terryfox.org

Bidding for 2024 Olympics not the best decision for Toronto: Tory DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Elections Canada has all the information you need to be ready to vote.

Toronto will not be bidding for the 2024 Olympics, Mayor John Tory told reporters in front of Toronto City Hall Tuesday. Tory said after having consulted with city councillors, business leaders and community leaders, he’s determined the city can better spend its time dealing with core issues such as transportation, housing and poverty than it could chasing Olympic gold. “In the end, it’s not my job to be rash,” Tory said. “It’s my job to make the best decision for Toronto. And I’ve decided not to submit a letter to the International Olympic Committee and so we will not be a candidate for the 2024 Summer Games.” Tory said he made the call late Monday – just a day before the Olympic Committee’s 6 p.m. Sept. 15 deadline for submitting a letter. He said while Toronto is wellpositioned to host major sporting events as proven by the success of this summer’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, there simply was neither time nor support to mount a bid for the Olympics. additional problem The federal election presented an additional problem, Tory said. “It was a factor in the sense that you couldn’t look at one person who would for sure be in a government, or any combination of people who would be in a government, and know you were talking to somebody who could help,” he said. “I know in recent days I talked to people in the three national parties and they were supportive, they recognized that the federal government had a role to play, but they were not writing a blank cheque.” Toronto would also have been well behind other world cities vying for the Games. And ultimately, Tory said council needs to pay heed to the real and

immediate priorities in governing and building the city. “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.” But Tory said he would be establishing an advisory committee looking at ways Toronto could compete for the Olympics and other international events, such as the World Cup of Soccer, the World Expo or other world championships. “When and if we decide to compete for these events, we will do it right,” he said. “We will prepare and council will make the decision together. If Toronto is to host a games or other large scale event, we will do it in a way that is sustainable, costefficient, innovative and environmentally friendly. In short, the best possible showcase for our city.”

Publishing companies have dropped off books >>>from page 1 March, continuing a longstanding love of reading by spending some of the money he got from collecting and returning bottles and selling scrap copper to buy a few books. “I started up with just a few books on a board here that I would just read when I was looking to pass the time,” he said. “Then people just started dropping off books. At one point, we had about 12 banana boxes full, but the city came and said ‘this is ridiculous’ so we had to get rid of a lot of them.” The two men have garnered attention. Alex said staff members from a major publishing company with offices nearby have dropped off books and asked him for book reviews. He has dropped off the reviews and signed them “the Underpass Librarian.” Passersby, too, have taken to leaving books, and sometimes taking books from the collections, with the book owners’ blessings.

Elwin Murphy is one of two men who have started what are believed to be Toronto’s first homeless libraries.

“I just try to be happy and bring happiness to others,” Alex said. “I want to put a smile on other people’s faces and give some perspective on what homelessness is about. I’m not here to be annoying or make people uncomfortable. I’m not looking to be a parasite on society.” Someday, he said with a smile, he would like to add board games to his library to

make it more interactive. Not that the two men are lacking in interactions with the public. They often have people drop by to chat and peruse their collections. When those people offer money, Alex offers them a word of advice. “I usually say no to that and tell them ‘if you really want to do something for me, get me a book (gift) card or get me a book,” he said.

Wider sidewalks, narrower road proposed for Yonge at Lawrence North York Community Council has decided to widen the sidewalk at the northwest corner of Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue in front of the Lawrence subway station. The decision was made at community council Sept. 8, and needs city council approval on Sept. 30. To accommodate the expansion of the sidewalk from the existing 2.7 metre width to 4.8 metres, Yonge Street will be narrowed. No lanes will be lost. The southbound curb lane will be narrowed from 6.1 to 3.6 metres. This lane is used to drive through the intersection and to turn right onto Lawrence Avenue. The current width of the lane allows motorists to drive straight through the intersection beside cars waiting to turn right, in the same lane. However, a number of rear-end and side-swipe col-

lisions have occurred in this lane, according to the city. The new narrower lane will not allow for motorists to drive through beside stopped cars turning right, as the turning cars will occupy the entire width of the lane. The city says the move will create more space for pedestrians and improve safety for motorists, but it will slow down traffic in this lane. The move is being done as part of a redevelopment of 3080 Lawrence Ave. W., an existing six-storey mixed-use building that will include a new grocery store and a new internal subway entrance. The cost of the sidewalk widening will be borne by the developer. limits dropping on city streets wspeed

A total of 387 kilometres of local roadways will be dropping from a speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour to 30 km/h, starting this week

(Sept. 14 to 18). Motorists can expect to see speed limit signs getting replaced throughout the city, starting in Toronto’s Ward 22. The new limits will affect roads within the Toronto and East York Community Council jurisdiction. The new speed limits are an effort to make local streets safer. The idea to reduce the speed limits was brought to council by Councillor Josh Matlow after seven-year-old Georgia Walsh was struck and killed by a vehicle in Leaside last summer. A report from the city’s Medical Officer of Health says pedestrians have a 20 per cent chance of being killed when hit by a vehicle travelling at 50 km/h and a five per cent chance of death when that vehicle is travelling at 40 km/h. The city will be changing 4,450 signs and adjusting the timing at 310 traffic signals, at a cost of $1.1 million.
