JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Scadding Court Community Centre is looking to help give young women in its community a chance to gain valuable experience and help overcome gender barriers. The community centre is launching a new program, Economic Empowerment for Young Women, and is seeking 10 women aged 15 to 24 to participate. Funded by Status of Women Canada, the program will aim to better the lives of its participants and others in the community. “We’ve identified some economic barriers that exist for young women and we want to help them overcome these,” said Julia Ma of Scadding Court. “Right now, we’re just looking to connect with young women in our community.” Ma said some of the factors facing too many young women in the Scadding Court, Chinatown, Alexandra Park and surrounding neighbourhoods include starting out in low-income households, violence against women and a lack of education. “We want to help them with leadership-building, facilitation and financial management knowledge,” she said. Participants will be given a $75 monthly honorarium. While the dollar figure may not seem like much, it can help the young women start their own business. Once the participants go through the program, they can also share what they have learned with others, becoming peer leaders. >>>REGISTRATION, page 2

Cycling group unveils Beltline Trail report JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With changes to the Beltline Trail fast approaching, Cycle Toronto’s Midtown group penned a paper with a series of recommended upgrades. The report, titled The Beltline Trail: Past, Present and Future, was unanimously approved by the City of Toronto’s Parks and Environment

Committee and will be included in the city’s current Beltline study. Midtown Cycle Toronto member Michael Black, one of the report’s authors, said his organization’s recommendations were collected over a period of about two years. “Often, when we were riding on the trail, someone would mention something that they liked or didn’t like and I’d scribble it down,” he said.

When the group was founded, members were asked about their favourite cycling spots in midtown and almost all mentioned the Beltline Trail. Those members did, however, mention some issues with the trail. “There were significant problems that people cited about crossings on the Beltline, so we put together a presentation for Councillor (Josh) Matlow in 2011,” Black said.

While Mayor Rob Ford has come under fire for pushing to make the streets more car-friendly to the detriment of cyclists, that could actually come in handy in making the Beltline more appropriate for cycling with more funding in the city’s coffers for off-street cycling paths, he said. The Midtown Cycle Toronto group’s report looked at a number >>>connectivity, page 13

LGBTQ community choir will perform Valentine’s Cabaret Two decade-old choir perform their own unique versions of popular songs on Feb. 9 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

W

ith Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Toronto’s largest LGBTQ community choir is getting set for a special show that will cater to both lovebirds and the lovelorn. Singing Out (www.singingout. com), which has been up and running for more than 20 years, will perform Songs of the Heartless, A Valentine’s Cabaret, with the company’s ensemble members performing their own takes on popular hits from artists ranging from One Direction and Adele to Stephen Sondheim and Barbra Streisand. “The theme is ‘songs of the heartless’ and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Singing Out member Wayne Sujo. “It’s very tongue-in-cheek and we always try to keep a quirky style but now with Jody Malone as our new artistic director, we’ve grown musically.” Because of its cabaret style,

some of the performers amp up the camp factor. Acts range from a rendition of LMFAO’s ‘Sexy and I Know It’ to a scene in which a drag version of Anne Hathaway pines for her first Oscar. Singing Out started small, with a group of about seven people looking for a fun musical diversion. It came about just as the Toronto Gay Men’s Chorus was winding down, at a time when being out and proud was still frowned upon by many. “It was as much political as it was social at first,” said founding artistic director John Schrag. “The idea of standing up on a stage and saying ‘hey, I’m gay’ was unheard of at the time.” Singing Out was a non-confrontational and engaging way to address sexuality, and Schrag noted some performers even used the choir as a way of coming out to their families. “It was a lot less threatening to say ‘hey mom, come see me perform in a show’ than to say ‘hey

people we can make a difference with music.” While Songs of the Heartless will be performed by members of Singing Out’s ensemble following an audition process, the choir is open to anyone and boasts roughly 100 members. “We have people at all different levels,” Sujo said. “Some of our members are really seasoned – almost professionals – but don’t read music at all and just want something fun to do.” The choir performs two main shows every year along with a number of smaller gigs such as Songs of the Heartless. The ensemble travels to other communities as well, and the organization is part of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses. Songs of the Heartless will take place at the 918 Bathurst Centre, 918 Bathurst St., with shows at 3 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. Impact of public meetings

A

s the city-wide tour of transit consultations makes its way through Toronto this week and next, it’s important to re-inforce the potential value these community gatherings have. When we take advantage of these opportunities, we build better communities. The Feeling Congested? series is designed to garner public feedback on transportation priorities and funding options for projects. The series kicked off with events in York Monday and Scarborough Wednesday and continues into next week with events in North York and downtown. Additionally, according to chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat, more than 1,500 people have already shared their opinions online. It is admittedly challenging to share feedback for projects that are years, even our view decades away from being realized. But as we seek to connect our Change is communities, this stage is an possible if we important one. It has impact. For evidence, look no further speak up to what happened last week on another transit-related issue: the construction of the Eglinton Avenue light-rail line. Metrolinx confirmed at a public meeting last Thursday that after reviewing feedback, a station at Ferrand Drive in North York would remain in the plans. Initially, there were plans to scrap the station from the line. Ferrand Drive is in Flemingdon Park, one of the city’s priority neighbourhoods whose dense population would benefit from a transit stop. The construction of the Aga Khan Museum nearby was also a factor in keeping the station, according to a Metrolinx spokesperson. These are the things that happen when people speak up – in this case, it helped shape and ultimately improve a critical piece of transportation infrastructure. Not bad. Hopefully the Feeling Congested? series can yield those kinds of ideas that shape our transit future. At the York Civic Centre Monday, the first session, from 4 to 6 p.m., drew a sparse turnout. But it’s apparent one common concern that’s already surfacing is how the potential funding tools – percentage of a property tax, parking levies, fuel taxes, highway tolls, among others – would be applied and to whom and for how long. These are critical questions. These are conversations we must have now. And it’s good they’re happening now. These are conversations that don’t need to be restricted to election time. So we must understand the contributions we make to our communities today can have far-reaching impacts. It’s how communities grow, evolve and prosper. newsroom

It’s time they stopped telling us that Premier elect Kathleen Wynne is the first openly gay leader in Ontario. Is this going to influence her ability to lead the Liberal Party? Isn’t it time to focus on what other qualifications she has to be a capable leader, instead of merely promoting her sexual orientation? Has any other politician come out and said they were openly heterosexual? Is sexual orientation now a prerequisite for getting elected? Really, who cares? If she is a capable leader, let her get on with leading. If not, then let’s have an election and find out who is ready to give good, honest leadership, regardless of their sexual preference. Mary P. Nicol

Legal system a popular weapon in Toronto politics It’s been a big winter for the left-wing anti-Rob-Ford illuminati. They nearly toppled our virtuous, football-loving mayor for the crime of loving football too much. Fresh from that neartotal-victory, the skulking fiends saw fruits of their other investigations – in the form of a compliance audit of Mayor Ford’s 2010 election campaign. This is serious business: the same pack of villains saw another sometimeFord-ally, Giorgio Mammoliti, could be facing prosecution for his own alleged electoral sins in 2010. If you listen to the mayor and his allies, the scoundrels are engaged in an unfounded, partisan and political attack on democratically elected politicians, the like of which has never been seen.

THE CITY

david nickle

And if you believe that, you haven’t spent much time watching Toronto politics. Because while it’s true that this latest round of legal challenges brought forward have come from citizens who it’s fair to say don’t agree with the direction in which Ford is taking the city – using the courts to win fights you can’t win at the ballot box is not an exclusively left-wing tactic. In the 2006-2010 term, it was councillors on the left who were in the spotlight. Former councillors Sandra Bussin and Adrian Heaps both incurred stiff legal fees

to deal with issues while in office. When the two councillors – along with Mammoliti, then an ally of mayor David Miller – had their expenses reimbursed, future Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday took the city to court, and won. Holyday’s move was a matter of principle, to be sure – he didn’t think taxpayers should be reimbursing legal fees for members of council, but it’s hard not to see it as political as well. After all, those three were allies of left-of-centre mayor Miller: Holyday was then firmly entrenched in the right-wing opposition. All of this is – or should be – beside the point. The reality is that everything that goes on having to do with politicians is political. Everyone who comes to city hall does so with an

agenda – whether improving their neighbourhood, improving the lot of the disadvantaged or finding the gravy that’s costing taxpaying Torontonians an arm and a leg. Sometimes, their agenda is more visceral: putting politicians with whom they disagree on these points out of office. The legal system might be a weapon of choice for those players from time to time. But whatever the motive anyone has for engaging it, once engaged the system has a way of sorting things out. And if politicians are found to be in breach, they really only have one enemy to blame – themselves. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Toque campaign raises money to fight homelessness Unforgettable Auto Show vehicles With the winter cold finally here, the Sherbourne Health Centre, St. Christopher House and Houselink are teaming up with Raising the Roof to help raise funds to combat homelessness. The organizations have taken to selling toques with a big push on Toque Tuesday (Feb. 5) when they went out into the community selling warm winter headwear for $10. The funds from Toque Tuesday and ongoing toque sales will support the three organizations’ homeless programming. “Sherbourne Health has been serving homeless people in the downtown area for about 10 years and this will help us with funding for our programs,” said Sherbourne Health Centre CEO Suzanne Boggild. “We’re really pleased to partner with Raising the Roof because the funds that are raised in the community stay in the community.”

Boggild noted funds raised through the toque campaign will help fund Sherbourne Health Centre’s infirmary, which provides temporary shelter for homeless following hospital care, its Women in Need Clinic (WINK) which supports homeless and underhoused women, and Supporting Our Youth. “A number of the people we see here are youth and it’s estimated that 40 per cent of the homeless youth in Toronto are part of the lesbian, gay, bi and trans community,” she said. Lambrina Nikolaou of St. Christopher House noted homeless youth will also benefit from her organization’s partnership with Raising the Roof. Funds raised through the initiative will support the organization’s Toronto Youth Job Corps, which helps connect youth with work, school and training. “We have a number of youth out selling toques (Feb.

5), raising awareness and letting people know what it means to be a homeless youth in Toronto,” she said. “The program really empowers youth to make a difference in their life and do it from where they’re at (in life) right now.” Sherbourne Health Centre was looking to sell a total of 1,200 Raising the Roof toques and had already sold some 500 prior to the organization’s participation in Toque Tuesday. The organization will continue to sell toques out of its headquarters, at 333 Sherbourne St., in hopes of raising more funds. St. Christopher House, meanwhile, typically sells about 1,000 toques a year, bringing in $10,000 for its youth programming. The organization was hoping to reach that target again this year and will continue to sell toques after Toque Tuesday at its 1033 King St. W. location. – Justin Skinner

CLIENT’S CORNER! We hired Frank Leo to sell my mother’s home after she passed away, and we could tell immediately that we had made the right decision. Frank’s initial presentation was thorough, he answered all our questions, and he wasted no time in putting our house on the market. He understood the difficult time we had gone through leading up to the sale, and was very empathetic. Frank’s strategy of pricing the property realistically and advertising it throughout the GTA really paid off. We ended up with multiple offers and a sale price 117% above our asking price, all within one week of listing the property. During the period between the date of sale and closing, Frank’s customer service was excellent. He answered all of our questions and helped us with any concerns. We highly recommend calling Frank Leo if you want to sell your home quickly and see great results. Dave U

Connectivity a major concern >>>from page 1 of issues, including lighting, heritage, crossings, drainage and safety. While the group’s report looks at the needs of cyclists first and foremost, it also makes recommendations that aim to make the trail as usable as possible for others as well. “There are parts (the city) didn’t want paved, so we recommended covering them with gravel,” Black said. “Normally, that’s not what cyclists would recommend, but it’s what we think would be good for everyone.” In both the city’s study and the Cycle Toronto report, connectivity at crossings was cited as a major concern. The trail ends at various points where it meets with major roads only to continue at a different point on the other side of the street. “It’s really frustrating,” Black said. “We’ve had people

get lost going from one segment to another.” Cycle Toronto said it’s pleased the city recommended lighting the entire Kay Gardiner section of the Beltline, but the organization disagrees with the city’s belief that areas such as the Moore Park Ravine and Yellow Creek should remain unlit. The city suggested that lighting would disrupt the wildlife in those areas. “Right now, there isn’t a good way to access the (Evergreen) Brick Works, which is strange because it’s being held up as this big environmental place but the easiest way to get there is by car,” Black said. “They’re discouraging people from using the Moore Park Ravine and if they’re discouraging people from using it, what is it there for?” The report also highlights needed improvements to areas along the western

portion of the Beltline Trail, which prompted EglintonLawrence Councillor Josh Colle to table it at the Parks and Environment Committee meeting. “Josh Colle’s been incredibly cooperative and he’s told us he’s drumming up funds to fix up his section,” Black said. “We’re really pleased about that because the trailhead out there is a total mess right now.” Despite a few differences, the Cycle Toronto report, which is available online at http://cycleto.ca/beltlinereport, dovetails well in most regards with the city’s study. “Now there’s just one report we’re really looking forward to and that’s the final report by the consultants (Victor Ford and Associates),” Black said. “That will be what tells us what’s really likely to happen.”

Chow outlines national transit strategy RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Before a group of faculty and students at York University last week, federal MP Olivia Chow outlined her ideas for a national transit strategy. Chow, the NDP’s official transportation critic, unveiled what she called a five-point plan for transit support and called on the federal government to heed the call of municipalities across the country to dedicate funding for transit over the long term. Under Chow’s plan, the federal government would guarantee transit funding over 20-year cycles, set clear targets, issue money based on non-partisan measures, part-

ner with municipalities and encourage sustainable and energy efficient policies. Chow, the MP for TrinitySpadina, said urgent action was required by the Harper government, which is set to renew its infrastructure funding plan that expires in 2014, to address worsening congestion the Federation of Canadian Municipalities says costs the national economy an estimated $10 billion annually. Despite federal contributions to the ongoing Spadina subway extension – which includes a station under construction at the Keele campus – Chow dismissed such allocations as “piecemeal” and pointed to the Harper government’s refusal

to pay for a share of new TTC streetcars costing nearly $2 billion as evidence transit funding for Canada’s largest city remains far below what it should be. After then-federal transport minister John Baird rejected Toronto’s request to include the streetcars as part of a federal economic stimulus plan, the city ended up allocating funding it receives from the federal gas tax – around $110 million – toward the amount. Following her remarks, Chow fended off repeated queries from the media on whether she would run against incumbent Rob Ford for mayor in the 2014 municipal election, saying she was examining her options.
