Boys & Girls Club welcome funding to cover revamp

Driving the net

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Nearly a year after moving back into its revamped Spruce Street building, the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Club’s Regent Park branch is still looking for funding to finish paying for the refurbishment. The club’s home in an early-19th century church, at 101 Spruce St., underwent a two-year renovation, with staff and children moving back into the new space last Jan. 26. “It was a $7-million renovation and the building was

completely gutted,” said Amanda Neale-Robinson of the Kiwanis Boys & Girls Club. “We’ve been here since 1921 with an after-school program and it was good to move back in after spending two years in satellite locations.” The revamp came at an opportune time, coinciding at least somewhat with the Regent Park Revitalization, which saw many local youth temporarily displaced. In addition to nearly doubling the amount of usable space from 12,000 to 22,000 >>>club, page 2

Club piloted groundbreaking safe walk program >>>from page 1 square feet, the revamp also included a technology room with state-ofthe-art computers, improved gym facilities, a driving simulator and more. This in addition to existing afterschool and evening programs which offer children and youth a chance to take part in arts and crafts or physical activities or cooking, nutrition or literacy learning classes. “The cool thing about our club is that we run it like a grassroots organization,” Neale-Robinson said. “We take direction from the ground up. We listen to the needs of the com-

munity and the interests of kids.” She cited a new knitting club that started after some of the youth who attend the centre expressed an interest. The club offers an after-school program which runs from roughly 3:15 to 6 p.m. and night-time programs for youth. The centre also offers programming during school breaks, summer camp sessions and more. The Regent Park Kiwanis Club was groundbreaking in piloting a safe walk program in which local youth pick children up from schools in the Regent Park and Cabbagetown areas and bring them to the centre.

The youth also walk the children home when the after-school program ends. “It started in 2004 in response to some violence in the community,” Neale-Robinson said. “Some parents were afraid to let their kids travel alone. Now we’re the largest employer of youth in the downtown east.” The program won an award from the City of Toronto and has been emulated in other Kiwanis clubs. Many of the new features in the renovated centre were made possible through corporate sponsorship, and the centre was renamed the

Miles & Kelly Nadal Youth Centre after the Nadal family donated $1.5 million. Now, the centre is looking to fill a few gaps in funding to help ensure the costs of the renovations are covered completely. “There are still naming opportunities for foundations and businesses, but any funding will help,” Neale-Robinson said. “Really, we’re always looking for funding, whether it’s for our building or for programming, and we’re always looking for volunteers.” For information, visit www.believeinkids.ca/101spruce

Lawrence Park Neighbourhood Investigation of Basement Flooding (Area 20) & Road Improvement Study Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Notice of Study Commencement conditions, traffic, pedestrian safety, drainage problems and basement flooding in the Lawrence Park neighbourhood. Measures that improve storm water quality and reduce storm runoff will also be incorporated. The map in this Notice shows the Lawrence Park Neighbourhood Study Area and the Basement Flooding Area 20 boundaries. The Process The study is being planned under the requirements set out in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) document dated October 2000, amended in 2011.The MCEA process provides members of the public and interest groups with opportunities to provide input at key stages of the study. The study will define the problem, consider and evaluate alternative solutions, assess impacts of the preferred solutions, and identify measures to lessen any adverse impacts.

Background Like many established neighbourhoods inToronto, the infrastructure – roads, storm and sanitary sewers – in the Lawrence Park neighbourhood needs improvement.Traffic and pedestrian safety issues exist and road drainage systems are unable to convey stormwater effectively. Historically, part of the Lawrence Park neighbourhood has also experienced issues with basement flooding during heavy rainfalls. Basement Flooding Area 20, within the Lawrence Park neighbourhood is one of 34 areas inToronto included in the “Basement Flooding Work Plan”, approved by City Council to address basement flooding across the City. The Study The City ofToronto has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study to address issues relating to deteriorating road

Picture a Cure campaign offers free photo shoots JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having seen first-hand the horrible impacts of cancer, Toronto photography store owners Chris and Grace Hughes are doing a little something to help bring some joy to those who have been diagnosed and their families. The couple is offering free Picture a Cure photography sittings for people battling cancer out of their shop, A Nerd’s World. The quirky shop is at 986 Bathurst St., just north of Bloor. “In the last four years, I’ve had four close family members who have died of cancer and two more who are fighting cancer,” Chris said. “After my grandparents passed away, I wished I had had professional photos taken with them and now I want to make sure other people have that opportunity.” Cancer patients and their families can come in for a one-hour sitting, after which they take home a disk with the shots on them. Since they started offering the free sittings, they have held roughly a dozen shoots, with the subjects able to pick and choose what they want to convey through the photos.

“They’re welcome to come with their whole family and they can have backdrops for indoors or outdoors,” Chris said. “We just want to make sure they’re comfortable and get the photos they want.” The Hughes couple, who live in Etobicoke, posted flyers in the chemotherapy ward of Princess Margaret Hospital in hopes of spreading the word about the Picture a Cure program. While the flyers have attracted people ranging in age from their early 20s to their 80s, Chris was surprised to find his clientele has been exclusively female. “I don’t know why that is,” he said. “Maybe the men are less comfortable with it, but we want to keep it open to everyone.” Kept in touch Many of those who have come in for sittings have been so grateful for the opportunity they have kept in touch, keeping Chris and Grace updated on their progress. Cancer survivor Munira Premji, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Type B Cell Lymphoma and Stage 3 Multiple Myeloma, was thrilled to learn of the opportunity being

offered at A Nerd’s World. She quickly gathered her family together and they booked a photo shoot. “The experience was so much fun, with the lights and the studio,” she said. “Chris was really low-key and highly competent, and he allowed us to do whatever we wanted to do.” Good citizenship Premji, a North York resident who writes about her experiences battling cancer on her personal blog at www.i-will-survive.org, was taken by the gesture and by Chris’ sensitivity surrounding the shoot. “I could tell right away he was a man with a social conscience,” she said. “I love what he stands for, I love what he does and you can see the pride he takes.” For his part, Chris is grateful for the appreciation he receives, but feels doing what he can for those dealing with cancer is simply good citizenship. “This is just something we wanted to do,” he said. “Really, how could we refuse?” For more information on the shop or to book a sitting, visit www. anerdsworld.com or call 647-7262020.

Midtown musicians add colour to music - literally New double CD showcased Tuesday JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Visual art and music will come together when piano virtuoso and Yorkville resident Christina Petrowska Quilico performs the works of her former student, midtown Toronto-based Constantine Caravassilis, at the Glenn Gould Studio. The concert will serve as a release party for the duo’s new double CD, Visions: Rhapsodies & Fantasias, and will be accompanied by artwork created by Petrowska Quilico to complement the music. The melding of music with the visual is fitting given that Caravassilis has synaesthesia, a condition in which the stimulation of one sense results in automatic reactions from other senses. “I get different tastes in my mouth and depending on how complicated the piece is, I might see one colour or a whole palette of colours and neighbouring shades,” he said. Caravassilis did not know that his condition was unusual until he was studying at the University of Toronto. Until then, he believed everyone perceived sound in the same way.

“We were listening to music and I said to one of my study mates ‘Can’t you hear the brown?’” he recalled. “He said, ‘Oh, you’re a synaesthete’ and at the time, I had no idea what that was.” Petrowska Quilico painted pieces to correspond with Caravassilis’ compositions and, while she does not share the composer’s synaesthesia, she consulted with Caravassilis on the paintings. “I said ‘I’ll tell you what I see (when listening to the music) and a lot of the time, we matched,” she said. “I would tell him ‘For this piece, I see purple and red’ and he said ‘Yes, that’s right.’ There was one where I saw yellow and red, and he said ‘That’s right.’” 100 paintings The pianist and artist painted more than 100 paintings to correspond with Caravassilis’ music, which she was drawn to because she found the rhapsodies, fantasias and fugues heartfelt even as they drew from various influences. She said combining music and art makes sense even without making the direct connections synaesthetes are able to make. “I love discussing tonal colour

and how it translates between painting and music,” she said. Caravassilis, meanwhile, has learned to control his synaesthesia to a certain point. He noted it tends to occur only when he hears low string sounds, making it a valuable tool at his disposal when composing pieces. “If I’m working on a piece and I want to induce my synaesthetic condition into it, I translate it into strings,” he said. “It’s a fun mind game to play with myself as a composer.”

The midtown resident is currently working toward his doctorate at the University of Toronto and finds his neighbourhood ideal for his lifestyle. “Yonge and Eglinton has a downtown feel with everything a grad student would ever need so close by, but my street is very, very safe and very, very quiet with a lot of trees around,” he said. Petrowska Quilico, meanwhile, loves living in the Yorkville area. Having grown up in New York City, where she attended The Juilliard

School, she loves the hustle and bustle of being where the action is. “I like to walk around everywhere, and there are a lot of places to walk around here,” she said. The Visions: Rhapsodies & Fantasias launch will take place at the Glenn Gould Studio, 250 Front St. W., at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. For tickets, visit www.roythomson. com or call 416-872-4255. Creating a transit system that works for every Torontonian

T

oronto residents need to continue to make their voices heard when it comes to the transit issues facing not only our city, but the entire Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance released an update of its Your 32 campaign this week and it shows a growing support among GTHA residents to not only improve transit, but to also accept some of the responsibility for paying for it. John Tory, co-chair of CivicAction, said transportation challenges have become the top issue for GTHA resiour view dents who deal with one of the longest commute times in Accept that North America. He called it “seven-day-ayou have a week paralysis” that deeply affects families and business in role to play the area. The Your 32 campaign asked residents what they would do if they had 32 minutes they otherwise would have had to spend on transit. Spending more time with family was one of the main responses. What really stood out, though, was what Tory called the human cost of our inadequate transportation system. The campaign was done to show support for the regional transit system improvements being proposed by Metrolinx. The Big Move aims to infuse some $50 billion worth of transit improvements in the GTHA over the next 25 years. The campaign helped residents realize the real costs of transit congestion and what it would be worth to them to make things better. We have said before in this space that we in Toronto, and the surrounding regions, will get the transit we are willing to pay for. Yes, provincial and federal governments must shoulder their share of the cost, but residents are also going to have to be willing to accept funding tools such as tax increases dedicated specifically for transit. To that end, the City of Toronto’s planning department is beginnings its own set of public consultations on transit. Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat said the meetings are being driven by the need to provide information to Metrolinx on what Toronto’s transit priorities are. We urge Torontonians to participate in these meetings, and play a role in creating a regional transit system that works for all of us. Dates have not been finalized, but we will let our readers know the details. newsroom

The political picture over the past 30 to 40 years has brought the same old names and faces. Why? Because where else do you get paid mega-bucks and really do not have to have any experience or qualifications and answer to no one? These people are professionals at living off the poor dumb taxpayers. Come on fellow voters, it is time we smartened up. Remember there is no rule that says you need a law degree to be a politician. And of course it is high time we put into law the maximum time for all politicians be set at two terms of office. W.D. Adamson

Planner makes brave stand on Toronto transit issues When Jennifer Keesmaat turned up as the City of Toronto’s new chief planner in the summer, it raised a few eyebrows. It’s not to say the former planning consultant wasn’t a good fit. Keesmaat cut her teeth on city politics, working as an executive assistant for Joe Mihevc and Councillor Jane Pitfield in the early days of amalgamated Toronto. Keesmaat also came as an advocate for lower-order transit and cycling and pedestrian accommodation. On the last point, she went so far as to deliver a Toronto Economic Development (TED) talk, extolling the virtues of walking to school. She’s a planner that would have been a perfect fit in the David Miller administration. Not so much for the

THE CITY

david nickle

pro-car, anti-streetcar Ford era. On Monday, Keesmaat stood up in front of the Toronto Board of Trade, pressing a similarly neighbourhood-based agenda. Transportation, she said, remains the singular challenge for growing a city surrounded by sprawling suburbs, both within – and far beyond – city limits. Many of us are spending too long commuting and it’s affecting the city’s ability to attract more jobs and remain livable. Next month, she and the city will be launching a public consul-

tation plan to see just what level of transit improvement Toronto residents are willing to pay for. But in the speech, she made it clear the biggest transportation improvement the city can make has nothing to do with transportation at all: rather, it involves developing mid-rise housing and commercial space along some of the city’s avenues. As she pointed out: “Where we choose to live is our most important transportation planning problem. If you live in Hamilton and commute to Toronto, even with state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure, you’re commuting for two hours a day.” This is a view entirely consistent with Toronto’s progressivist planning legacy – so not entirely

new. But so long as Toronto continues along the route that Ford began in 2010, it’s clear Keesmaat is fighting against the grain. In a moment of candor, she admitted as much. “We, of course, have a political culture that’s very challenging. I’m not getting into that in any detail, but the reality is we’re in a highly politicized environment. I was warned about the fishbowl before coming here. You can know about it intellectually, but you have no idea what it’s like having so many eyes looking at everything you say or tweet.” The fact that Keesmaat was first hired, and second remains in her position, suggests those eyes are more diverse in opinion than the message from the mayor’s office might suggest.

Seneca College teacher sparks creation of IKEA monkey T-shirt and video game JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The story of Darwin the IKEA monkey, which caught the city’s attention for a spell last month, has earned new life with the release of an online video game and T-shirt design. Bloorcourt area resident Barnabas Wornoff, who teaches at Seneca College, came up with the idea of creating the game and the T-shirts after discussing Darwin’s saga with friends. Darwin, a Japanese macaque, first came to the public’s attention when he was spotted wandering around an IKEA parking lot in North York in a tiny shearling coat Dec. 9. When Toronto Animal Services removed the monkey from the custody of his owner, Yasmin Nakhuda, Nakhuda went on to protest. Wornoff said he was talking to his friend JJ Dukharan, a designer, about the story when it first broke and, after some deliberation, decided to create some T-shirts and make them

available to the public. “I thought it was really interesting and hilarious that there was this monkey in a little coat in a parking lot,” he said. “I have a friend from Seneca who designs shirts and I told him we should make shirts about this whole meme that started up.” One of Wornoff’s students, Daniel Whiffing, is a computer programmer and created the video game, which sees Darwin navigating a parking lot and dodging people, shopping carts and other obstacles while collecting the pieces necessary to build an IKEA book case. “I didn’t know it was going to turn into what it has,” Wornoff said. “It just sort of flowed naturally and everybody I talked to was excited to be part of it.” The website (www.ikeamonkeyshirt.com) has already garnered attention and has surged in popularity as word has spread. “We’ve had hits from as far away as Australia and we’re really big right now in Budapest for some reason,” Wornoff said. “We’ve had hits from

Spain, the U.K. and California, and Winnipeg has actually ordered the most shirts.” While the shirt and the game

are tongue-in-cheek, Wornoff has actually spoken with Nakhuda, who enjoyed the game and even proposed a spin-off.

“She said she wished we would make one with the monkey breaking out of jail and getting back to its mommy,” he said. While public opinion was divided on whether Darwin should be returned to Nakhuda, Wornoff chose not to take a firm stand. “It’s sad that they took (Darwin) away from her because he’s like a close family member at this point,” he said. “I heard that once the monkey hits puberty it could get dangerous, but people have monkeys as pets in other countries so I don’t know whose place it is to say she can’t keep one here.” While Wornoff first conceived of the idea to create Darwin T-shirts and a video game, he brainstormed both the game and T-shirt with others and is sharing the wealth with the other contributors, mainly students and recent graduates. The T-shirts, which include a graphic of a monkey in a shearling coat with a thought bubble containing an Allen key, are available on the website and at the Cardinal Skate Shop at 940 Bloor St. W.

CLIENT’S CORNER! Client’s Corner! Hi Frank, How are you? Sorry for taking so long to send this message, but we wanted to thank you for everything you did to help us sell our house. Your expertise in the real estate arena is phenomenal, and your customer service is no less than stellar. After dealing with our previous agent, who was a lifetime friend, yet a total disappointment (as our house was on the market for 6 months and unsold), you sold our house in 10 days for more than we’d expected. Your support system (Tony and Sam) were so pleasant to deal with too. We are all settled into our new place, and couldn’t be happier. The only regret we have is that you weren’t involved in the purchase of our new place. Thank you so much for all your help, you truly are the best at what you do :) And we think you have the most fabulous hair, and your ads do not do it justice. Take Care, Kandis and Troy

Transit

TOinTRANST

CivicAction: residents want action to reduce congestion RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Whether it’s in the 416 or the 905, a spokesperson for the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance believes a groundswell of support for transit expansion is building as congestion grows to “crisis” levels in the GTHA. John Tory, from CivicAction, an advocacy group calling for better regional transit connections, said on Monday transportation has become the top local issue for residents concerned with gridlock and daily commute times that are among the highest in North America. “You really get a feel when you travel to the farther reaches of the 416 and even more so into the 905 and see the seven day-a-week paralysis that so deeply affects families and businesses,” said Tory, the group’s chair, during a press conference held by CivicAction at city hall. “Transportation is at an all-time high as a concern for local residents.” Tory, who is also a popu-

lar radio host, presented an update along with CivicAction CEO Mitzie Hunter of the group’s three-month-old Your32 publicity campaign for better transit. He said an “evolution” was taking place in the minds of residents regarding the toll congestion takes on their personal lives. “Individuals are coming to realize congestion caused by a grossly inadequate transportation system is negatively affecting their jobs and their families,” said Tory. “They have come to the conclusion major action is necessary to improve the quality of their own lives.” That action, according to the CivicAction, is investing billions of dollars for a meaningful transformation of the existing transportation network to come directly from both governments and residents. “I think the public have given the signal they want the leaders to get on with building transit and find fair and balanced ways to pay for it,” he said.

Mitzie Hunter, left, and John Tory from the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance display a word cloud info-graph during a media conference Monday at City Hall.

Hunter said over the course of its Your32 campaign the group asked residents to weigh in on what they would do with 32 extra minutes of time per day. That’s the amount of time the transit planning agency Metrolinx says will be lost if the $50 billion Big Move regional transportation plan is not completed within the next

25 years and commute times rise even further from 77 to 109 minutes as a result. “We asked people to tell us how traffic congestion is affecting them,” said Hunter. “They have showed us the true cost of the region’s antiquated and inadequate system.” Hunter said thousands of residents took part in the exercise, including 15,000 visitors to campaign website www.your32.com, as well as through social media. CivicAction took the feedback from residents and created a word cloud infograph of the most popular responses. According to the word cloud, which was unveiled at the press conference, the most popular responses include spending more time with family, catching up on sleep and enjoying a better

work experience. The human cost of congestion is something that has been missing during the debate for better transit, said Tory. “It’s really the humanity of the responses,” said Tory following the press conference. “People are talking about time being taken way from their family.” He said he was happy to see the prominence of the transit funding issue in the Ontario Liberal leadership race to replace Dalton McGuinty, but declined to endorse a specific candidate. To r y, w h o w a s o n c e the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives also said CivicAction had plans to consult further with the main Ontario political parties, including Tim Hudak’s Tories, and had also held a group

Run Date: Jan 18, 2012 - Metroland - Orangeville (5.145”x4.166”) B&W

event for municipal leaders, which was also attended by Toronto mayor Rob Ford. In addition to updating the progress of its Your32 media campaign, Hunter also announced the addition of three more members to CivicAction’s council of regional “champions”, private and public sector individuals who advocate for better transit throughout the GTHA. The list of 44 appointees also includes former chief city planner Paul Bedford, who was in attendance at the event. Bedford, who has travelled the GTHA speaking about improving transit said residents, when informed about the costs of congestion are willing to pay more to improve transit. “You go through the whole education process and get them to understand the choices and consequences and they’re more willing to pay. Because they can connect the big picture choices with their daily life,” said Bedford. TTC chair Karen Stintz was present briefly as an observer, but didn’t speak with reporters. Her press aide JP Boutros said Stintz decided to attend the media conference primarily in support of her friend Tory, though she supported the idea of dedicated transit funding. “We’ve been calling for a dedicated fund for transit since OneCity,” said Boutros referring to the citywide transit network first proposed last July.
