Gift will spur Rendezvous with science more food programs in Regent Park ®

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A generous gift from the Sprott Foundation will help families in Regent Park gain better food security. The foundation donated $5 million to Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) with the funds being used to start up community food centres in Regent Park, Winnipeg and Dartmouth. To establish the Regent Park branch, CFCC will partner with the Toronto Christian Resource Centre (TCRC) at 40 Oak St. The food centre will be modelled after The Stop Community Food Centre in Wychwood Barns. Rather than copying The Stop’s model wholesale, however, the Regent Park branch will strive to meet the needs of the communities it serves. ‘Community consultation’ “We’re in the middle of community consultation now,” said TCRC executive director Louise Moody. “We’re meeting with a lot of our community food partners, doing surveys with community residents and talking to tenants in 40 Oaks, and meal program participants.” While TCRC currently holds a meal program out of its com>>>INFRASTRUCTURE, pg. 12

School singers to back up Nick Cave JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A group of 15 lucky Rose Avenue Public School students will showcase their talents when they take the Massey Hall stage in support of renowned band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The students, who are in Grades 5 and 6, will sing backup

on six songs during the Toronto leg of the Australian band’s tour. Grade 6 students Julianne and Galila were thrilled to be part of the sold-out show. “When we first heard the news, we couldn’t stop jumping around and screaming,” Julianne said. The opportunity came about

through the school’s collaboration with Inner City Angels, which is working with Mariposa in the Schools to lead a five-year arts enrichment program at Rose Avenue called Hold Up the Sky. The school’s choirmaster, Diane Jamieson, noted the students were unfamiliar with most of Nick Cave’s work but

Forest Hill entrepreneur nabs GG ‘caring’ award JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

f young entrepreneur Evan Kosiner’s vision becomes a reality, every child in Canada will someday have the chance to lace up a pair of skates. Kosiner, a Ryerson University graduate and Forest Hill resident, is one of the driving forces behind Skate to Great, a not-forprofit organization that collects skates and helps get them into the hands of children whose families would not otherwise be able to afford hockey or figure skating equipment. He started the organization with help from a couple of influential members of the figure skating community. “About a year ago, I had a conversation with my friend Kaitlyn Weaver, a top Canadian figure skater who moved up here to be able to train with her partner Andrew Poje,” he said. “We agreed it was really weird

that we’re living in Canada and still some kids don’t have an opportunity to skate.” For his work in helping to found Skate to Great, Kosiner was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award on Saturday, March 16. As someone who has started up eight companies ranging from banking to printing to broadcasting, Kosiner has never been one to back down from a challenge. He started working with his contacts to figure out a way to collect donated skates and helmets and distribute them to youngsters in need. Their first event, held in March 2012, saw more than 200 pairs of skates donated to children through Big Brothers and Big Sisters at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Starting up a not-forprofit and filling such a huge order so quickly came with its share of challenges. “That first event – the

whole first year – was really exciting and scary,” Kosiner said. “Normally, when you go get fitted for skates in a sports store, you’ll be in there for half an hour or 45 minutes. We were given a bunch of shoe sizes and didn’t know if they were for boys or girls, and then we had 200 kids coming up all at once so it was all hands on deck with our volunteers trying to lace up all the kids.” Skate to Great has benefited heavily from skate drives held at Kosiner’s former high school, Forest Hill Collegiate and other schools. The organiza-

tion has also managed to partner with FedEx and StorageMart to ship and store skates, Siskinds Law, which has provided pro bono help in setting up the not-for-profit, the Ryerson University Digital Media Zone and others. Kosiner is amazed at how quickly everything came together. “We have free interns, free office space and a lot of services provided in-kind,” he said. “I actually didn’t expect the train to leave the station so quickly when we were trying to get it off the ground.” While starting the organization up virtually on the fly posed its share of challenges – the Big Brothers and Big Sisters event took place a month before Skate to Great was even registered as a charity – it was also extremely rewarding. “It’s crazy to see kids hit the ice for the first time,” Kosiner said. “There’s just something magical about seeing them

as they learn and start literally floating on (the ice.)” Thus far, the organization has handed out thousands of skates, and the organization expanded with locations across Canada in December. Kosiner hopes to start

up a helmet fund down the line, but Skate to Great is primarily looking to collect skates for the time being.

New book looks to change dialogue for LGBTQ community George Brown College’s Vivek Shraya asks the question What I LOVE About Being QUEER JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Tired of the negative selfimage that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals often feel as a result of homophobia, George Brown College positive space coordinator Vivek Shraya decided to change the dialogue. Shraya created a film, a tumblr website and now a book that asks members of the LGBTQ community what they love about their sexual identity. book launch The book, which was launched at George Brown College on March 13, is the third element in the What I LOVE About Being QUEER series. “One of the things that I’ve found comes up repeatedly in conversations about homophobia is that it leads

to a form of self-loathing,” Shraya said. “I was interested in positive messaging for queer youth especially because a lot of us struggle with being queer when we’re faced with all kinds of homophobia.” Shraya’s film came first and consisted of 34 members of the queer community divulging what they love most about being part of the LGBTQ community. “The film got a good reception but it didn’t capture enough different voices,” he said. At screenings of the film, Shraya would bring a camera and take photos and get responses from audience members willing to share what they love about being queer. To expand the variety of opinions, he has posted these, along with email submissions, at http://whatiloveaboutbeingqueer.tumblr.com The new book, released

in partnership with George Brown’s Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Services, takes the initiative a step further with more than 100 additional personal perspectives and experiences, plus essays from George Brown College profes-

sors and others. Queer-identified psychotherapist and author Farzana Doctor was one of the book’s contributors and said the question it poses is one that has long gone overlooked. “There are so many narra-

tives that talk about the painful things to do with being queer – the discrimination and the alienation,” she said. “It’s important to look at the ways (LGBTQ individuals) have internalized all that pressure and ask ourselves ‘what are the things we gain by being queer?’” The responses range from serious to cheeky, showcasing a broad cross-section of the LGBTQ community, which is often painted with a broad brush. “Some of the things I think

we get (out of being queer) is that we have new ways of forming relationships,” Doctor said. “Because we’ve been seen as different for so long, we’re already outside the box and come up with ways of thinking that are outside the box.” Shraya, who lives in the Liberty Village area, hopes the project continues with more people adding to the tumblr page and possibly with another edition of the book featuring more responses. “There are an unlimited number of reasons to love being queer,” he said. Proceeds from the book will go toward the George Brown College Positive Space Award, which goes to LGBTQ George Brown students who show leadership in the classroom and community.

The book is available through the tumblr site, at George Brown College Toronto bookstores or at Glad Day Bookshop.

Political will needed for transit funding It’s hard to argue with Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBOT) President Carol Wilding who said the time for debating how to pay for transit expansion is over. However, providing funding recommendations like those in the TRBOT’s discussion paper, A Green Light To Moving The Toronto Region, doesn’t make funding a reality. Four revenue tools are recommended: a one per cent regional sales tax; a $1 per parking space levy; a 10 cent per litre regional fuel tax; and a road toll for highoccupancy lanes charged at 30 cents per kilometre for single drivers who wish to use the lanes. All revenue raised (nearly $5 billion annually) is to be earmarked for transit expanGreat. That amount is our view sion. more than double the $2 billion Metrolinx says is needed each year Board of Trade for the $50-billion Big Move plan. The numbers are impressive. suggests These are all worthy recommendarevenue tools tions – but it all comes down to the increased taxation of people and the willingness of levels of government to impose such taxes. We’re a far cry from any government having that courage and, despite the board’s assurances, from understanding what the public would accept. The Board of Trade discounted using devices such as property tax hikes to fund transportation, citing them as revenue sources for municipal governments – and always under consideration to increase to keep municipalities afloat. Whether in the form of a straight-out tax, a levy, or toll the end result is the same – money comes from the pockets of residents. We have said many times that we will get the kind of transit we pay for. Very true. The ambitious recommendations are what is needed. After all the region is losing $6 billion in productivity annually. While the TRBOT suggests upward of 50 per cent of people would be willing to swallow taxes to fund transportation it’s never that easy to evaluate acceptance. We do know this. You can’t tweak today’s revenue generation and come up with an answer that would raise the required capital to build the system and to maintain the operation. This paper offers dramatic new income sources to be considered. But is there a political will to carry any of these recommendations forward?

It’s weighed in on social issues, infrastructure and tax policy at the same time as it’s engaged in its more core business of... well, business growth and retention. This week, the board stepped into the fray once more: this time, with a suite of taxes, fees and levies to come up with about $3.5 billion a year, going toward public transit. This is not a huge leap for the board.

infrastructure expansion in Toronto. Uneasy On the other hand, it is newsworthy, when a business organization is the first out of the gate in proposing what under other circumstances its more conservative members might decry as a massive tax grab. In this case, the conservatives who seem most uneasy about these proposals are the ones on Toronto council. Mayor Rob Ford has made it clear he doesn’t support any tax increases for transit. Doug Holyday, the deputy mayor, doesn’t like them much either. Even Karen Stintz, the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission and generally a more progressive conserva-

cent per litre regional fuel tax, a road toll for HOV lanes, and the aforementioned parking levy. The proposal is a good start toward coming up with the $50-billion cost of the regional Let’s Move plan. One might add to that a portion of income tax – so that the entire cost isn’t borne through user fees and consumption taxes – but the TRBOT does provide the basis for a payment plan for the cost of building our infrastructure to match our city’s needs and aspirations. The alternative is the continued reliance on the current mayor’s fantasy of private sector funding that will never materialize. In other words, stagnation.

I n D a v i d N i c k l e’s column, he refers to the city’s chief medical officer of health’s warning of the potential negative effects a casino would have on problem gamblers. The inference is we shouldn’t build a casino here. By that logic, we should close bars, beer stores and liquor stores because of the potential negative effects they have on problem drinkers. People have to take some responsibility for their actions/addictions and not expect the state to do it for them. Build the casino, but put it at Woodbine. Bruce Gates

Band sought 15-voice inner city school choir >>>from page 1 here were really excited.” While Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are known for their moody sound, Jamieson said the songs on which the students are singing backup are well-suited to the choir. “It’s a different kind of music than what they’re used to, but they’re really getting into it,” she said.

In the short time since they were introduced to Nick Cave’s music – the chance to sing backup came about shortly before March Break started – they have quickly grown to enjoy it. Julianne said her favourite song is Jubilee Street while Galila is partial to The Ship Song. “It’s so different from the

things you normally hear,” Galila said of her personal favourite. “I think all his music’s really different and I’m excited to be part of the show.” Inner City Angels executive director Jane Howard Baker arranged for the students to perform backup with the band through her daughter, Montreal-based cellist

Rebecca Foon. “The band wanted to have a 15-voice choir from an inner city school to back them up on a few songs and my daughter asked if I could set that up,” Howard Baker said.

“I said ‘I think I can do that.’” The band is touring in support of its latest album, Push Away the Sky, dovetailing nicely with the school’s Hold Up the Sky arts program.

A portion of the proceeds from the show will support programming at Rose Avenue Public School.

more charges laid in attack

A Toronto man faces more charges in connection with a violent incident at a transit station. Cummings is also accused of an assault at North York Centre station Feb. 12. Made-in-Toronto transit improvements needed: Stintz DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Region Board of Trade’s plan to raise revenue for public transit expansion through tolls, parking fees and other revenue tools offers some good ideas, but TTC chair Karen Stintz said at least some of those tools should be used by the city and not the provincial transit agency Metrolinx, for madein-Toronto transit improvements. “It’s my strong position that Toronto needs to be able to invest in its own transit plan, and its own transit future, so that we can prioritize the projects that make sense for the people of Toronto,” Stintz told reporters after the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s news conference. The business association released a report, A Green Light To Moving on the Toronto Region: Paying for

Public Transit Expansion. The board recommended, among other things, a one per cent regional sales tax, a dollar-per-parking space levy, a 10 cent a litre regional fuel tax and a toll for high occupancy vehicle lanes. Stintz said some of the ideas made a lot of sense. “I think there’s a lot of value in tolling HOV lanes,” she said. “Right now those lanes are under-utilized. If there are less than two people in a car and someone wants to access the lane and they’re willing to pay for it, that’s a choice they can make and a good way to potentially introduce the idea of tolls.” Stintz was more skepti-

cal about the parking tax. In last year’s debate about subways in Scarborough, then-budget-chief Mike Del Grande attempted to introduce a parking levy and eventually withdrew it for lack of support – and over concerns raised on behalf of major suburban shopping malls, where parking is typically free. “I think we want to be very cautious about where we implement it, how we implement it,” said Stintz. “We don’t want it to be implemented then repealed because of some of the unintended consequences. In the malls we want to make sure that what we do doesn’t inadvertently drive more business out of the city or cause other unintended consequences.” To read Rahul Gupta’s story on the TRBOT report, visit http://bit.ly/YmX2lH; or visit the TRBOT website www.bot.com

With a full community kitchen in place in 40 Oaks and a few community gardens already in place in Regent Park, the infrastructure is already in place for education and skills-based programs. CFCC president and CEO Nick Saul said his organization focuses on three areas: emergency food access, skills-building programs and education and civic engage-

ment. He acknowledged the Regent Park Community Food Centre would not be well-served by a food bank, but noted the location is ideal for other programming. “One of the big draws for us in Regent Park is that (TCRC) really did a great job of reinventing their community space and they needed help populating it with programming,” he said. “They’re a great organization with a history of doing good food work, so now we’re in a good place to come along and provide resources, money and an approach with a proven track record.”

The community food centre will mark yet another step in the large-scale transformation of the Regent Park community as it transitions from being a neglected and isolated area to a much better-served area. Saul said Regent Park residents will steer the new programming, but said foodgrowing programs based out of the area’s allotment and community gardens, cooking workshops and food-related or income-related civic engagement programs are among the services offered at other community food centres that could prove useful in Regent Park. Moody is hopeful the new programming will be in place once the community consultation is complete, which will likely result in a roll-out this fall. West Toronto Community Legal Services has funding cuts deferred LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com West Toronto Community Legal Services (WTCLS) will remain open, thanks in part to a petition that garnered almost 1,000 signatures from local residents. Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) approved a joint submission from WTCLS and LAO staff for a six month deferral on its previous decision to

cut funding to WTCLS, last Thursday. “I’m happy to see that Legal Aid has listened to west Toronto residents and community organizations that have fought hard to keep this clinic’s doors open,” said Davenport MPP Jonah Schein, who circulated the petition. In addition to signing the petition, residents and organizations wrote to the attor-

ney general and LAO asking them to collaborate with WTCLS to keep services in the community. LAO’s initial plan was to open a regional centre in downtown Toronto with satellite offices operated by rotating staff, but it would no longer offer housing and community outreach services that are currently provided by WTCLS. WTCLS provides “important” legal assistance, hous-

ing help, public education and mental health support to a broad spectrum of lowincome and marginalized individuals. “It just goes to show that collected action works,” Schein told The Villager. Had the WTCLS closed this month, its clients would have had to seek support through the Social Benefits Tribunal and Landlord and Tenant Tribunal, according to Kier

Munn, co-chair of WTCLS board of directors. WTCLS provides a homeless prevention program, which is funded by the city, in its location at 2333 Dundas St. W. Had it closed, it would no longer offer this service, he said. There are 12 staff members, including lawyers, who help people facing eviction and those wrongly dismissed. “This clinic helps keep

families together by securing housing,” said Schein. WTCLS is “grateful” for the community’s support, said Munn. “This amazing level of support was a decidedly positive factor in our being able to earn this opportunity to serve the residents of West Toronto,” he said.
