For the residents of Cabbagetown, early September represents more than a looming change of seasons and a return to school for youngsters. In that downtown community, it also means the return of the Cabbagetown Festival. The long-standing community festival – this year marks the 37th such event – has grown in leaps and bounds to become a highly anticipated celebration of the area, and this year promises to be no different. “Last year was kind of a transitional year for the festival,”

Lots to look forward to in new school year

N

ew schools, new programs, new teachers, new classmates. There’s lots going on at both the Toronto public and Catholic school boards as the new school year begins Tuesday. In our special feature in today’s edition, we look at what’s new in the schools. And there’s plenty: both locally and around the city. To see our comprehensive coverage of what’s new across Toronto, visit us online at bit.ly/ TOschoolnews A number of Catholic elementary students will be starting classes in new school buildings with the openings of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati in northeast Scarborough and St. Ambrose near Dufferin and Dundas streets. The need for a school in the recently built Scarborough neighbourhood was huge, and parents and students alike are excited about the opening. But education is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about people and programs, of our view which there’s lots to be excited about this year. For example, a number of Courses and Northview Heights Secondary sharing at School students will be sharing what they learned at this schools month’s Adobe Voices digital media arts summit in California. They were the only students from Toronto to attend the summit, which featured students from 23 countries sharing art projects aimed at making social changes in areas such as bullying and cultural awareness. Also, students at a number of schools including Blacksmith Public School will be using technology to improve their math skills by playing the computer game Prodigy. Less high-tech, but every bit as valuable in the real world, students and their families live in, is a bicycle repair and maintenance program at Central Commerce Collegiate Institute. At Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, new principal Derek Chen admits he has some big shoes to fill in replacing Maria Pereira. “She’s a legend,” Chen said. “I’m pretty honoured to follow in her footsteps.” While students have all this and more to look forward to, a big part of back to school is also showing off the new fashions to classmates. With that in mind, we invite readers to enter our First day of School Contest. Send us your best first day of school photo and you could win a $250 Cadillac Fairview gift card. For more, go to www.insidetoronto.com and click on contests under Local Interest.

Taxpayers are looking to survive the constant barrage of regulations and increasing financial burdens, so politicians can enjoy their higher pays and job security. By the way, we moved to Toronto from Florida and found you can’t wash your car in your driveway or the street. I wonder which politician got paid by the car wash industry to push such nonsense. Back to school – steps to your child’s success Advice from CCAC can ease your child’s anxiety and stress about the first week of school The first weeks of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting: new teachers and classmates, bigger classrooms, new routines, more schoolwork - these can all contribute to feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. This can be an especially anxiety-ridden time for those changing schools, or making the move from elementary school to high school or onwards, and can negatively affect your child’s mental health. Schools are at the forefront of dealing with mental health and addictions issues experienced by children and youth. A team of specialized mental health and addictions nurses at Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) work in Toronto’s schools to provide advice, consultation and education on mental health issues. Here are some tips to de-stress students returning to school: • Remember: mental health is just as important as physical health • Sleep well and eat well-balanced meals: this is a foundation every child needs • For younger children, es-

Keep the lines of communication open with your child when it comes to their fears about the upcoming school year.

tablish a “back to school” routine around wake-up time, bedtime, and meals before school starts • Parents, be positive: children take cues from you. Your excitement and confidence about the upcoming school year will spread • Communication is key! Ask your children about fears and concerns about the new school year. Listen. Check in often and show support. • What can increase comfort levels during the first week back: help your child figure out their new bus or subway route; take your younger child on a walk around their school, pointing out their classes – these will all help them feel more confident about

their new environment • Emotions magnify – parents can support children through feelings of fear, anxiety, or uncertainty, and they won’t find them so overwhelming. Make sure your child knows they are not alone. • Encourage your child to build friendships Back to school stress and anxiety are normal for students, and usually they pass within the first few days or weeks. If your child continues to seem anxious or stressed, or displays unusual behavioral changes, it may be time to seek the assistance of a mental health professional.

Have your say about jets at island airport The public is being invited to join in the conversation surrounding the use of jet airplanes at Billy Bishop Toronto Centre Airport (BBTCA). The use of jets at the island airport has raised the ire of some, and the city is asking residents across the city to have their say on the matter. Issues to be discussed will include noise, safety, infra-

structure, public health, transportation impacts, land use, marine impacts, economic impacts and the effects jets would have on the community. Porter Airlines brought forth an application in May asking city council to permit amendments to the 1983 Tripartite Agreement between the city, the federal govern-

>>>from page 1 street,” said SickKids president and CEO Mary Jo Haddad. “This will be home now to 2,000 scientists.” Having one facility for all SickKids scientists will free up space in the hospital for treatment and allow the research team to move out of rented spaces in the area. More importantly, it will give the researchers a chance to share findings and complement one another’s work. “For us, the scientists, this is the exciting part,” said Dr. Michael Salter, senior scientist of neurosciences and mental health. “We’ll be able to rapidly share our discoveries with people in other groups and other labs.” The building will feature individual research “neighbourhoods” in six fields: brain and behaviour; organ systems and disease; patients, populations and policy; genetic and genomic medicine; cancer and stem cell biology; and molecules, cells and therapies. A large common space overhanging Bay Street will provide fodder for discussion among scientists from different fields.

“You can overhear what one group is working on so you can kind of join (the discussion),” Haddad said. “The whole concept of collaboration and integrative space is to enable innovation in this kind of environment.” Open concept Labs spaces are also open in concept and can easily be rearranged to meet the changing needs of healthcare. “When thinking about the future, we don’t have the recipe for what’s going to happen,” Haddad said, adding that retrofitting a building instead of having adjustable labs would be costly. Salter said having large lab spaces that can accommodate large numbers of researchers will improve the ability of researchers to come up with innovations. He cited the study of pain in children as but one example. “Right now, my lab group of about 20 people is in one building, the clinicians and scientists who actually study pain in children are in another building and the surgeon/ scientists who try to repair nerves in some children with

chronic pain are in another location,” he said. “In this area here, we will bring together all those people – a group of about 50 people working on the different aspects of pain in children.” The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning also features a large area where the public can come to learn about research and findings through seminars and presentations, connections to SickKids Hospital and the SickKids Elizabeth McMaster building, learning labs and a 250-seat auditorium. Every seat in the latter comes equipped with a microphone with a call button, encouraging those in attendance to ask questions and share information, along with a camera so those asking questions can be seen on screen. By promoting research, the centre will help maintain SickKids’ place as a leader in children’s care. That, said Salter, will help meet the hospital’s goal of ensuring there are “healthier children in a better world.”

NOW OPEN IN THE HEART OF LEASIDE

TUFF hits subway stations Sept. 13 to 15 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Commuters taking the subway will be able to enjoy short, independent films as they wait for their ride with the return of the Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF). Now in its seventh year, TUFF offers a selection of silent, one-minute shorts from around the world, with a different film screening every 10 minutes on each of the network’s 290 Pattison Onestop screens. The brainchild of founder and Executive Director Sharon Switzer of Art 4 Commuters, the festival features animated and live-action shorts. Switzer said the idea for TUFF came about after she spoke with the company that operates the screens in subway stations. “It was sort of a no-brainer,” she said. “You have a city that loves film, you give people films in public spaces, who’s not going to love it?” This year’s TUFF festival features 82 films from 20

countries. Of those, 23 come from Toronto, with some coming from such destinations as far away as Kenya and Iran. The selections were chosen from some 390 submissions by guest judge and acclaimed filmmaker Bruce McDonald. “It was an incredibly strong year for us,” Switzer said. “What we used to get in a (minute-long film), when you compare it to what we get now, the difference is amazing.” In addition to the selected films, TUFF will include some special series. On Friday, Sept. 13, experimental filmmaker Christina Battle’s “we’re not exactly sure what happened” series will provide alternative imagery to go along with snippets from CNN’s coverage of the Boston bombing from April. “She took the transcripts of the nonsense CNN was broadcasting while reporting on the Boston City bombings where they didn’t know what was going on but kept having to talk because it’s

CNN,” Switzer said. While TUFF has always traditionally provided subterranean entertainment, it is also moving above ground this year with a series of eightsecond shorts by media artist David Clark. “Pattison Onestop has a giant video billboard at Yonge and Edward, just north of Dundas and we’ll be using that,” Switzer said. “While the TUFF films run every 10 minutes on the subway screens, these eight-second clips will run every minute.” Select screens in Dundas, St. Andrew and Yonge-Bloor stations will be dedicated purely to TUFF films, and the films will also be screened as a collection at the Drake Hotel in a special screening room with showings from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Friday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 15. As always, commuters will be encouraged to vote for their favourite shorts, with the top films up for awards.

The city is asking residents to call 311 to report locations where summer vegetation growth is obstructing traffic signals and stop signs. Callers are asked to provide either the closest address or the nearest cross streets to assist efforts to dispatch city staff to the locations. “To protect public safety, we are asking residents to act as our eyes on the street to help us identify and address situations that are potentially unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers,” Don Valley Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34), chair of the city’s public works and infrastructure committee, said in a statement. While city transportation services and parks, forestry and recreation staff routinely perform proactive maintenance, this summer’s rainfall has led to more vegetation growth than usual.

Harold Desmarais to be inducted into Q Hall of Fame JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Longtime human rights advocate Harold Desmarais has long been ahead of his time. Desmarais was an early advocate of the gay liberation movement, speaking out for the rights of the queer community from the early 1970s. As an openly gay inspector at Ford’s Windsor Engine Plant, he experienced, first-hand, the bigotry prevalent in those days, enduring taunting and harassment from several of his co-workers. Fortunately, the United Auto Workers union (now Canadian Auto Workers) had a clause in its contract prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation – a rarity at the time. “Back then, it was sort of a catch-22 situation (for members of the lesbian gay bi transgender community),” he said. “People would say ‘if there’s nothing to be ashamed about, why are you hiding your sexuality,’ but a lot of people

couldn’t be open about their sexuality without putting their job and even their home at risk.” He noted many employers could terminate employees based solely on sexual orientation and some landlords would even terminate leases because they did not want to have gay people living on their property. Because he had job protection, Desmarais was able to become an outspoken advocate with Windsor Gay Unity, which spoke out for more equal rights for the LGBT community. Despite the protection he had, he admits he sometimes had to stick up for himself – a fact made easier by his role as inspector. “If a foreman had a problem with me (due to sexual orientation), I would make sure to inspect engines extra closely to find something wrong,” he said. While Desmarais was open at work, he was not so forthcoming with his own family.

...people couldn’t be open about their sexuality without putting their job and even their home at risk. – Harold Desmarais

When his mother made a disparaging remark about gay people, he spoke up and finally told her he was gay himself. “She said ‘you shouldn’t tell your dad because that would be like rubbing his nose in it,’” Desmarais recalled. “I said, ‘mother, this is my life and you’re talking about it like it’s excrement. I’m not OK with that.’” While his advocacy work began in 1972, by 1973 he was already chairing Windsor Gay

Unity, a role that saw him visiting colleges and universities to speak out about homophobia and its impacts. “I would go out and give a bit of information and try to refute the major misconceptions that were out there, like that all gays are after children, or gays can’t reproduce so they’re trying to recruit kids,” he said. Desmarais was also a founding member of the Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario (CGRO, which is now known as the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario). That organization brought LGBT advocates from across the province together so they could lend one another support and move together for change. “We would have various activities that we would coordinate with each other so if there was a picket line in North Bay, we’d have one in Windsor, too,” he said. “Sometimes, when there are problems in your own part of the province, activists in other parts of the province can help you keep your morale up.” In 1980, Desmarais moved

to Toronto when seven gayowned businesses agreed to fund a full-time employee. He became CGRO’s executive secretary and battled to have the Ontario Human Rights Code amended to include sexual orientation. While the organization’s attempts to do so failed in 1981, the code was finally changed in 1986, something that Desmarais admitted came as a shock. “In my heart, I didn’t think it would happen in my lifetime,” he said. “I thought all the work we were doing was just planting a seed for down the line.” Desmarais was also a key member of the Gay Community Dance Committee, an organization that raised more than $400,000 to distribute to charitable groups, as well as the Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal (now the Community One Foundation), which both highlighted the talent within the LGBT community and raised funds for queer-friendly organizations. “It was like a lesbian and gay United Way,” he said. “It was always a juggling act because there were always more organizations and groups that needed support than there were funds to go around.” When attitudes toward the LGBT community took a step back in the early days of AIDS, Desmarais joined the Toronto Chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. As Sister Atrociata von Tasteless,

he worked to help those in the LGBT community get rid of guilt and promoting joy while speaking out about the importance of safe sex. “That was very rewarding from a personal point of view, especially during the early days when AIDS was known as GayRelated Immune Deficiency,” he said. “We handed out safe sex pamphlets that would fight fear and ignorance but would do it with humour.” He recalled visiting a man who was in hospital after being diagnosed with AIDS, noting the hospital staff were always gowned and masked, afraid to make contact. “We just went in and hugged him and he said ‘aren’t you afraid?’” Desmarais said. “I told him ‘a hug never hurt anyone.’” While Desmarais’ advocacy work has slowed in recent years – he is now 68 – he is always quick to lend support to LGBT organizations looking for a speaker or an emcee. In the meantime, he said he is enjoying his retirement years in and around the downtown area he calls home. “I’ve lived here since I moved to Toronto in 1980 and it’s great because I live within walking distance of most anything I need,” he said. Desmarais is slated to be inducted into the Q Hall of Fame on Oct. 3. The Q Hall of Fame recognizes leaders in the Canadian Human Rights Movement. For more info visit, www.qhalloffame.ca

The festivities will begin Thursday, Sept. 5 starting at 7 p.m. with One Night in Cabbagetown, which will allow visitors to pay $10 to sample drinks and snacks at a selection of neighbourhood eateries. “A lot of the participating places are new to Cabbagetown so this is a great chance to people to try them out,” Donato said. Controversy erupted last week when TTC workers rejected a proposed uniform re-design resembling the colours of the Montreal Canadiens. The outcry was so loud it led TTC CEO Andy Byford to say in a statement that a posted picture of a blue, red and white striped golf shirt was only a “proposal” and no final choice has been made. Whatever the design, TTC workers are scheduled to wear the new duds begin-

ning in 2014. prize’ data wAn‘Door base available online database allows cyclists to report ‘door prizes’, which occur when a car door is suddenly opened in the oncoming path of a cyclist. Now a struck rider can register an incident, and post details on the severity of the accident, the licence plate of the car involved and other information. Visit www.doored.ca

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Park closure upcoming wCorktown The deadline to visit the city’s newest park is fast approaching. After Labour Day, Sept. 2, Corktown Commons, located in the West Donlands area, will close temporarily for the winter to allow for its completion. Located next to a bur-

geoning condominium community, and the GO Train tracks close to the Don River, the urban park boasts an extensive array of marshland vegetation as well as a playground and other amenities. It also doubles as a flood protection area for the nearby Don River. Wa t e r f r o n t To r o n t o opened the park in an uncompleted state at the end of June. Corktown Commons will re-open in spring 2014.

Wall meeting set for Sept. 17 wNoise Metrolinx/GO Transit has set Sept. 17 as the date for a public presentation of its proposed noise walls along the rail corridor in the Sorauren Park area in Parkdale. The walls are proposed to mask the sound of increased diesel train traffic on the Georgetown rail corridor beside the park. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8:30 at The Lithuanian House at 1573 Bloor St. W
