idtown Toronto bookstore Mabel’s Fables is looking for some ‘angels’ to help ensure hundreds of children do not go without this Christmas. The bookstore is running its Angel Program, in which customers are invited to buy age-appropriate books, which will then be included in gift baskets and handed out to needy families by Unison Health and Community Services. “We’re given the kids’ first names and ages and we transcribe these names onto ‘angel cards,’” said Eleanor LeFave, Mabel’s Fables owner. “These cards are hung from the ceiling on ribbons, then our customers can pick one and pull it down, buy a book that they want to share for that child and we’ll gift wrap it and make sure it gets to the child.” The Angel Program allows customers a chance to buy books >>>Demand, page 10

More awareness is needed for deadly pancreatic cancer Two local residents survive six per cent survival rate JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

C

ity hall and the CN Tower glowed purple Friday, Nov. 30 to raise awareness of one of the deadliest – yet also one of the most unrecognized – forms of cancer. Pancreatic Cancer Canada used the purple lights to draw attention to the deadly illness, which has a low six per cent survival rate. Both Annex resident Libby Znaimer and downtown Toronto resident Dr. Michael Clarfield have both battled pancreatic cancer and were among the fortunate minority to have been successful in their fight. Znaimer had previously

battled breast cancer and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few years later. She was suffering abdominal pain and, after early X-rays and CAT scans came back negative, she finally received the bad news. “My tumour was locally advanced, which means that it hadn’t spread, but it had wrapped around the veins and arteries,” she said. After some initial drug treatment, her tumour shrank by 50 per cent, which was a rarity. “My surgeon said it was the first time he’d seen an inoperable tumour become operable,” she said. She underwent a trau-

matic surgery in which one-quarter of her pancreas and a portion of her small bowel was removed. “It was just about the toughest surgery there is,” she said. Doctors later discovered Znaimer has a rare, hereditary genetic mutation that makes her more susceptible to cancer. Despite that news, with proper treatment and frequent examinations, she has now been cancer-free for four years. Clarfield was diagnosed four years ago when he was also experiencing abdominal pain. Because he is a physician, he was able to have tests conducted in his office, which showed he had a large pancreatic tumour. “The good news for me was that it was contained, which means it hadn’t

spread elsewhere,” he said. “But as a doctor, I knew that most people don’t survive six months time.” Clarfield had some experience with the illness, having lost his mother to pancreatic cancer 10 years

ago. Having seen what she went through, he had some sense of what awaited him. He underwent a lengthy surgery during which his pancreas was completely removed, leaving him diabetic, and underwent six months of radiation and chemotherapy. “In some ways, (the postsurgical treatment) was worse than the surgery,” he said. While he has had a few scares during follow-up checkups, he has remained cancer-free since his treatment ended more than three years ago. Both Znaimer and Clarfield said they know they are fortunate to have survived their battles. Most are not so lucky. “When I was diagnosed, four to five per cent of people lived two years after diagnosis,” Clarfield said. “Since then we’ve gone

from four or five per cent to six and if we can keep inching that up, it would be great.” Znaimer noted a number of factors keep pancreatic cancer off of most people’s radars, partly due to the fact there are few survivors around to tell of their struggles. “There’s a lack of research and a lack of charitable donations,” she said. “It’s a very tough disease to crack because (doctors) don’t often find it until very late and it’s resistant to chemotherapy.” Pancreatic Cancer Canada is looking to raise funds and awareness through its Purple Lights Campaign, with purple holiday lights and signs available through the organization’s website at www. pancreaticcancercanada. ca

Readers talk about Ford I am not excusing Mayor Rob Ford for his actions that resulted in a single judge making the decision to have him turfed from office, but there are numerous others who have committed questionable acts who are still in office. Toronto’s budget balancing act

n Appoint next mayor

W

hat must Toronto’s civic leaders accomplish as they shape the 2013 capital and operating budgets for the city? A number of things – and they form a balancing act between delivery of services and exhibiting fiscal responsibility. Budgets are complex documents and when discussions opened last week, some heated disagreements took place on the floor of an alreadypolarized city council. But balance is in order and we offer the following suggestions to help guide the process: • Councillors must continue to engage with their constituents on what are priorities in their respective communities. This is true whether the issue is sports arena fees, community policing or support for a festival. Local representation is the essence of the system that’s our view in place. Our communities and neighbourhoods are the city’s Have your building blocks. But they are unique and those ward-level say about the exchanges need to be taking place. budget • On the council floor there must be acknowledgement and careful consideration of all revenue tools, including property tax. While a sharp eye on expenditures is expected, it’s not realistic to dedicate oneself to one side of the ledger when trying to balance a budget. As impressive a feat as reducing expenditures in last year’s budget was, it’s not a sustainable practice for Toronto council. Tax increases are never popular (the budget currently proposes a modest 1.95 per cent jump) but they are among a limited set of tools available when one searches for solutions for revenue. • Finally, there must be a sense of direction for Toronto from the budget. Once approved, the budget must demonstrate progress toward getting the city back on sustainable footing financially. The days of relying on provincial bailouts are gone. The previous year’s budget was a positive step forward. This upcoming budget must continue on that path. Budgets are a balancing act. It’s about identifying priorities and delivering cost-effective services. Unfortunately, it’s also about understanding that we can’t afford everything we may want in this city – especially if we are unwilling to pay for it. Next week, public hearings are scheduled on the budget. We encourage you to make it out to Toronto City Hall to offer your input or to contact your local councillor. The executive committee and council will approve the final budget in January. newsroom

Re: ‘Council needs to re-set priorities at halfway point,’ Editorial, Nov. 29. Your editorial is insightful. Council should make an appointment and it should be an experienced councillor who will follow the agenda of Mayor Rob Ford. He was elected by a good majority of the voters and they deserve to have their wishes honoured. If the left votes for this course, it will be further proof they only care about trying to get back into power and continue with their lack of respect for the city taxpayers. Anne Robinson

Consultation with voters is preferred option Odds are that should the time come that council has a choice on what to do about a vacant mayor’s office, they’ll choose to hold a byelection. Certainly, that’s what councillors who have been asked about it have said. And certainly Mayor Rob Ford, facing eviction from office, has said he’d be happy to put his name forward in one. But as the past two years have shown us, anything can happen with this council. And with a price tag of $7 million, it’s by no means a certainty that a majority of councillors will vote to spend that money on a byelection and not to bolster some programs in the 2013 operating budget. As tempting as saving cash might be, councillors should resist. Even if Ford’s behaviour wasn’t precipitating the

THE CITY

david nickle

event, at this point the city can only benefit from an official consultation with the voters. In 2010, Ford was elected with a powerful mandate, from an electorate who were interested in a more conservative approach to municipal government. They believed Ford when he said the government was bloated with what he called gravy, and they voted for him on the assumption he would be able to extract that gravy without meaningfully affecting services. In Scarborough, they accepted Ford’s assurance he would be able to build

a subway using private sector money. They understood his slogan Respect for Taxpayers meant when elected mayor, he would show respect for all taxpayers. What Toronto got was something different. Ford appears to have been wrong about the gravy; there’s not very much. He couldn’t deliver a subway without significant public investment and the support of council, and both of those were absent. As for respecting taxpayers, even disregarding the mayor’s behaviour surrounding football, it’s hard to forget the 24-hour standoff between the executive committee and the public when the administration brought forward its core services review or the ugly red-baiting the administration tolerated in its supporters.

Torontonians voted, then, for an agenda that turned out to be chimeric. And an appointment of an interim mayor that either attempts to continue that imaginary agenda or one from the left that repudiates it, would amount to a rejection of the popular will of Toronto voters. A byelection, as costly as it is, is essential for the short and long-term health of this city. If Torontonians want to continue with some measure of the Fords’ agenda at city hall, they ought to have the opportunity to say so. If they want to change direction mid-term, having lost their taste for it in the past two years, they ought to be able to say that too. Two years into the term, it may or may not be time for a new mayor. But it’s past time for a new mandate.

Unique storytelling series kicks off with holiday theme Erin Rodgers and Brian Finch share their own Festivus tales JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

W

ith the holiday season fast approaching, comedians and storytellers Erin Rodgers and Brian Finch are getting set to channel their inner grinches. Rodgers and Finch have started up the monthly “Tales of…” storytelling series, in which they and a group of guests share their own stories and experiences around a specific topic. This month, the show will centre around Festivus, which they are using as a catch-all to encompass the holiday season and all the warmth and chaos it entails. “I personally hate Christmas and I’ve hated it for a long time,” Finch said. “My personal tradition was to go see a horror movie on Christmas just to balance things out.” Finch, a Cabbagetown

resident, won’t have to deal with Christmas as much as he once did, having converted to Judaism earlier this year after feeling a connection to the Jewish faith. “The story I tell people is that I’ll do anything to get out of having Christmas with my family,” he said. While Rodgers, who lives in the Bloor and Ossington area, admits to secretly loving the holidays, her reasons may differ from those of many others. “I love those awkward moments with extended family where they don’t know what to say,” she said. “The holidays bring out the best and worst in people and isn’t that magical?” The duo came up with the idea for the Tales of… series when they met at what both agree was a nightmarish stand-up comedy show. The venue had no stage or microphone and they learned they had a lot in common while they commiserated. One of the

things they shared was a common love of storytelling. “There isn’t the pressure you feel as a stand-up where everything has to be funny, funny, funny,” Finch said. “You can add textures and layers and feelings you don’t often

get to get into with stand-up.” Finch likened storytelling to being at a dinner party where everyone has a fascinating story to tell. While both he and Rodgers are comedians, the stories at Tales of… shows range from funny to

heartwarming to sad. “There will definitely be comedic aspects at the show,” Rodgers said. “Sometimes, the most serious stories are the funniest things you’ve ever heard.” This month’s show will include performances by a diverse group of performers including actor/ comedian Sandra Shamas, actor Phil Luzi, stand-up comic Martha Chaves, Rodgers and more. Both Finch and Rodgers noted that while comedians often gravitate toward storytelling, the storytelling community is a separate and distinct entity. “In the storytelling community, people don’t just go for the easy topics and they’re willing to go to vulnerable places,” Rodgers said. The next Tales of… is a paywhat-you-can event and will take place at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Rustic Owl, 993 Bloor St. W.

The committee is recommending 11 different types they said will contribute more to the area’s tree canopy. “There’s a range, from smaller, more compact trees to large, deciduous trees such as oak trees,” Rowat said. The CRA also aims to help improve the streetscape along Parliament Street and is looking to partner with the Cabbagetown BIA to make that happen. The residents association is now taking a more active role in helping to improve the Cabbagetown community. While it has always been a positive force in the community, it now has committees

With concerns arising over downtown’s dwindling tree canopy, the Cabbagetown Residents Association (CRA) is encouraging residents to get a free tree through a City of Toronto program. The CRA, formerly known as the Don Vale Cabbagetown Residents Association, has started a tree canopy committee and has canvassed the neighbourhood in hopes of getting people to allow a new tree to be planted on their properties. A campaign began in earnest in the spring and now the committee is reaching out once again to let residents know about it. “We’re seeing a lot of older trees that are falling down or have to be cut down,” said Jim Rowat of the Cabbagetown Canopy Committee. “We’re just looking to enhance the tree canopy in Cabbagetown.” The program was inspired by a similar initiative in

looking at the tree canopy, safety and security in the area, schools and more. The canopy committee has reached out to residents on an individual level as well as at local festivals, and has also hosted guided tree tours with help from not-for-profit urban forestry advocacy group Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF.) “We’ve had information sessions and training sessions with the city forester to identify the opportunities and limitations of planting here or there,” Rowat said. While the city’s tree planting program is free to all, many are unaware it exists. Access proper forms at http:// cabbagetowner.com/focus/ canopy/freetree The free trees are planted on the city’s street allowance. The CRA also offers advice to residents who are interested in the program and is always seeking new volunteers. Anyone interested can email trees@cabbagetowner.com

Demand for books is high >>>from page 1 for children up to 17 years of age, and the customers get to select the book they will give. “(Monday) morning, a mom and some grandparents brought in two little boys and they each picked a book to give to children who were the same age as the boys,” LeFave said. While the demand is high – the store receives a list of hundreds of names from Unison Health and Community Services – none of the children on the list wind up empty-handed. “Everyone always gets a book,” LeFave said. “A lot of these kids don’t have access to books or don’t own books, and we think every kid should have that access.” The store is fortunate enough to have some generous customers who will come in toward the end of the Angel Program and buy up large numbers of books to donate, but there is always a need for more ‘angels’ looking to help families in need.
