JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While hundreds of thousands of Canadians were showcasing their bravery at Dieppe, Normandy and other Second World War battlefronts, a generation of Torontonians was able to do nothing but await the outcome of the war. Midtown residents David and Carol Wishart were among those who grew up in the city in those days, and both felt the impacts
of the war. Carol’s father was away for the entirety of the war, leaving Toronto in October 1939, sailing to England to do his duty and then returning in 1945. “When we saw him that first time (after the war), he hugged my mother and greeted my two brothers, but he didn’t speak to me at first,” she said. “He didn’t know who I was at first because he’d been away so long.” De s p i t e h i s l o n g absence from the home front, Carol’s father made a >>>GENERAL, page 10

changed for some of the city’s vulnerable. Kids Cook to Care empowers youngsters and teaches them both valuable cooking skills and the importance of empathy and giving. A team of kids gathers together once a month
throughout the school year to prepare and serve a meal to homeless and underhoused men in a Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre shelter on Lansdowne Ave. “It’s a way for kids to see where their efforts are going,
instead of having a fundraiser where kids sell grandma some wrapping paper and then hand over the money,” said Kids Cook to Care co-founder Jill Lewis, a midtown resident. “The kids get a tour of the shelter to put into context who they’re helping.”

Waterfront marathon was his third - that day
“
JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Most of the participants in last month’s Toronto Waterfront Marathon approached the starting line on the morning of Oct. 15 with an eye to the gruelling 42-kilometre run ahead of them. Jean-Paul Bedard did so knowing he was already twothirds of the way through an arduous day of running. Bedard ran the marathon course three times in rapid succession, part of his mission to raise awareness of sexual assault and the campaigns and programs aimed at putting a stop to it. The Cabbagetown resident and Lawrence Park Secondary School alumnus has been running for the cause for the past few years – using it not only to help others, but also to provide himself with a form of catharsis. “A few years ago, I finally disclosed to my wife and my adult son that I had been a victim of childhood sexual abuse and that I was later raped,” he said. Bedard was 12 years old at the time of his assault, and he withheld the horrific details for years, turning to drugs and alcohol to help him cope with the trauma. Through treatment, he began to eschew alcohol dependence, taking up running in its stead. When he finally divulged what had happened to his family, his wife urged him to seek professional support, which he found in a specialized treatment program at The Gatehouse in Etobicoke. The 49-year-old’s love of running has not come without additional tragedy; he was participating in the Boston Marathon at the time of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. “I was on the streets when

the bombs went off, and that was pretty messed up,” he said. “But I went back to Boston a year later, mainly to get over the fear of it. I ran the double Boston marathon to raise funds for the (Gatehouse) treatment centre and to reconcile my past and the past trauma of the Boston Marathon.” His decision to run a triple marathon in Toronto came about late last year, with Bedard aiming to raise awareness of sexual violence and treatment centres for survivors instead of focusing on fundraising specifically. When Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne launched
the province’s #ItsNeverOkay campaign aimed at putting a stop to sexual violence and harassment, it gave the runner a chance to boost the profile of his run. “I managed to get in contact with her office to express how really, really honoured I would be if she could join me at the marathon,” Bedard said. “About a week and a half before the marathon, her staff said she’d love to run the first five kilometres with me.” That required security clearances and necessitated a break between Bedard’s second and third full marathons, which can severely hamper a runner’s ability to
continue. When he finally met up with Wynne after running two full marathons, he was exhausted and dealing with hypothermia. “As I walked toward her, she pushed her staff out of the way, wrapped her arms around me and just said, ‘We’ve got to get this guy warm,’” Bedard recalled. Throughout his lengthy run, Bedard was buoyed by support, much of it from fellow survivors of sexual violence. Some joined him for legs of the run at various points, while countless others offered messages of support via Facebook, Twitter, email or phone.
In addition to being joined by Wynne, Bedard ran alongside Athena, a friend of a friend who was also a survivor of sexual violence. The two leaned on one another for strength, which was tough to muster at times. “We were both going through emotional times,” he said. “With about two kilometres left, Athena was dealing with an injury to her knee and didn’t think she could finish. I just told her, ‘I don’t care if we’re out here another seven hours. I’m going to finish this thing, and I’m not finishing it unless you’re there with me.’” With about 100 metres left,
the pair grabbed each other’s hands, crossing the finish line together even though they were physically and emotionally spent. Bedard said he plans to continue raising funds and awareness for sexual violence, though he noted a quadruple marathon is not in the cards. He listed three ways in which he hopes to make a difference: “First, I want to keep the dialogue going, because change always happens with conversation, and with conversation we can eliminate the stigma that happens (to victims of sexual violence,)” he said. “Second, as a male survivor, I’ve found that men generally don’t feel comfortable coming forward (after being sexually abused.) I feel a responsibility to help people understand it’s OK to come forward. “Third is ‘how does someone find the strength or resilience to overcome this?’ When I did the run, it wasn’t about me having the stamina to run three marathons, it was about all survivors who have the strength to carry on.” Bedard cited The Gatehouse and the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic as key resources in Toronto for survivors of sexual violence. He chronicles his own experiences, both in running and in life, on his blog www. breathethroughthis.com

Honour veterans and their memories on Remembrance Day
Write us
M
emories. They return to us through thoughts, feelings and familiar sounds and smells. Memories can reflect happy times. They can convey sadness. Memories can conjure up a time, decades old, or they can be from yesterday. But what if those familiar thoughts, feelings, sounds and smells, returned you to a time of war? A time when you thought you wouldn’t survive, weighed down with feelings of dread, by the sounds of the dying and the smell of death? Would you want to remember? This week, The City Centre Mirror commemorates the memories of Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice from the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War and the recent conflict in Afghanistan and all peacekeeping missions leading up to next week’s Remembrance Day. But also, we remember those who are still alive and are able, our view some willingly and some grudgto recount a time when Readers share ingly, only the present moment mattered. memories in When a slight move, or slow special section reaction meant the difference between life and death. Within these pages we have information on Remembrance Day ceremonies in your community. We urge you to attend one, speak to a veteran (so few remain from the Second World War) and talk to your kids about it. This is an especially important year as it marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. More than 45,000 Canadian soldiers gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded in the conflict. Along with stories in the pages of our newspaper, our special section online can be found at bit.ly/ TorontoRemembers The section shares the memories of our readers and the stories passed down by their loved ones: A black and white photo of two young lovers in a time of uncertainty, with only first names exchanged. A friend buried at sea. A mystery solider who died of pneumonia. A cheeky nurse who kissed a solider while he lay in delirium in an army hospital bed. You will read stories of friendship and laughter and letter writing. Remembrance Day is always important, but putting a face and a name to the stories of war bring it a little closer to home.

A reading of the taxation tea leaves
Y
ou can read a lot of different things in the tea leaves after a big election and there’s lots of readings a fortune teller can pull from this last one. For instance, one might say the election of Justin Trudeau as prime minister represents a generational shift, not just in Ottawa, but in the electorate. Young, inexperienced and optimistic Justin Trudeau came into power despite old, battle-scarred and pessimistic Stephen Harper’s best efforts, and it’s hard not to imagine a group of voters born in the 1990s reacting badly to messaging that someone who at least looks about their age is “just not ready.” Millennials, after all, have heard the same thing repeated ad nauseam since they were in short pants by their entitled elders. Millennials, like the
david nickle the city rest of us, have heard a lot of other things repeated. They’ve heard that government deficits are a cardinal sin, that taxes are best kept low, and that government itself is best kept small and relatively inactive. Based on last month’s federal election and the last few elections in which younger voters have been able to have their say, it’s seeming as though those notions are getting just as chilly a reception as that “not ready” attack ad. Although a conservative himself, Toronto Mayor John Tory was a beneficiary of this post-boom bump, and in his early months, governed in that knowledge, boosting existing services and promising new ones – actively re-
engaging city government in city life. But as a conservative, Tory along with many of his council colleagues are showing oldee timee reluctance to square the circle – to do the things that in the past have been understood as politically unpopular: raise property taxes higher than the rate of inflation, consider new ways to bring in revenue such as road tolls… to increase revenue, in other words, to match aspiration. Very soon, Tory and his supporters on council are going to find a need to do this. Just one of Tory’s enhancements – a return to higher levels of TTC service to undo the transit cuts made in the Ford years – will cost an additional $90 million to fund, fully rolled-out in 2016. An inflationary property tax increase (the maximum that Tory has prom-
ised) will raise $50 million. If that were the only pressure it would be bad enough, but of course it’s not alone. The Toronto Police Service will be costing the city more, and another promise, the mayor’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, is rendered meaningless if there is not significant spending in social services added to the 2016 budget. Taxpayers will also soon have to begin paying for the loan the city made out to itself, to help balance the otherwise askew 2015 budget. Would Toronto taxpayers and voters be willing to look at paying more for better services and a more cohesive city? The tea leaves, imperfect an indicator as they are, suggest they might just.

Meals are a big step up from shelter fare >>>from page 1 Cook to Care co-founder and caterer Julie Levin talking about food preparation, she introduced herself and the two started working out a plan to make the concept of bringing good food to the vulnerable a reality. The meals are a definite step up from the standard shelter fare, thanks to both the efforts of the kids and the generosity of Kids Cook to Care sponsors and donors. “The shelter has a tight budget, so it spends about $1 per meal on their food,” Lewis said. “We spend $8, so that really escalates the quality of the food.” Linda Cianci, whose sons took part in the program in October, said she was looking for volunteer opportunities for her boys, but found it difficult to find the right fit. “This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for,” she said. “It teaches the kids good

happy to cook for them.” The kids even get to learn about different cultures. In October, they prepared and served Moroccan dishes with help from celebrity chef Cory Vitiello, and were taught some facts about the country. “I like to tell the kids that we can travel to a different continent through what we make and what we eat,” Lewis said. While Kids Cook to Care will take a break in December for the holidays, the organization still hopes to reach out through its Cookies to Care initiative, in which families are given a list of high-needs centres where they can donate baked goods. “A lot of families are away, but we still want to run a virtual program where people can help out,” Lewis said.

Nepal, Chile, Pakistan, China and the Philippines. Hasso said the organization has used PayPal for all of those efforts and had never run into problems before. Hasso said Scadding has records of at least eight payments that have been denied. In talking to PayPal last Thursday, Scadding was told the matter would be investigated and an explanation would be provided, but as of The Mirror’s press time, the centre had received no response. Representatives from PayPal did not immediately return requests for comment. For the time being, Scadding is making do by having people donate or purchase tickets to the fundraising dinner directly through the centre. The dinner will take place at Dim Sum King Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
Scadding Court Community Centre’s efforts to sponsor Syrian refugees has hit a snag, with online money transfer service PayPal declining some of the payments residents have attempted to make. The downtown organization is hosting a fundraising dinner later this month to raise funds to sponsor at least one and hopefully two families of Syrian refugees looking to come to Canada. “For some reason, some people who have tried to contribute to our cause online have been getting a message saying their payment is pending,” said Areej Hasso of Scadding Court. “Then they get a message saying their payment has been declined by Scadding Court, and that’s not true. Who denies a contribution?” Scadding has run several fundraising efforts online following natural disasters in

General fear, uncertainty felt in Toronto Rotating clinics helping newly arrived >>>from page 1 father made a point of keeping in touch to ensure his family knew he was as safe as he could be given the war raging in Europe. “He wrote home twice a week and he numbered his letters to make sure we didn’t miss one,” she said. “My mother would get them and read them to the whole family.” David recalled spending some time at his family’s summer cottage. While the cottage did not have running water or electricity, the family was riveted by war reports on a small, battery-operated radio. “There was a real concern that Britain might be up against it,” he said. “When France fell, we were really worried that Britain would get bombed next.” The fear did not stop there. David’s father, a doctor who was too old to take part in the Second World War, went so far as to make preparations in case the Axis powers continued to steamroll over

the Allies. “He and a fellow doctor went and bought an almost deserted farm outside of Toronto,” David said. “Their thinking was that if Canada was next, at least we could get away from the city and hopefully be safe a while longer.” While David admitted that might have been an overreaction, it underscores the mood in the city at the time. There was general fear and uncertainty, even with Canada being thousands of miles from the war front. While they were not part of the war effort in the strictest sense, Torontonians pitched in however they could, most
notably through rationing. “Gasoline was rationed, so I can’t remember going anywhere in Toronto in a car,” Carol said. “If you needed to get somewhere, you went by streetcar.” When Japan took over the rubber-producing country of Malaya, rubber was also rationed, making road travel that much more difficult. “I was in the Boy Scouts at the time and we went on a camping trip in the scout leader’s car. We had two (tire) blowouts on the way up and all you could do was patch it up,” David recalled. Those challenges on the home front were, of course, nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those fighting overseas. Despite being separated from the battlefront by an ocean, however, those living in Toronto did what they could to support the war effort. “ We d i d n’t s u f f e r i n Toronto, but there’s no question Canada was focused very much on what was going on over there,” David said.
Syrian refugees with health care needs Crossroads Clinic the first to host JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A clinic designed to meet the health care needs of newly arrived Syrian refugees is making its way through four Toronto locations. Led by Women’s College Hospital, which is working in tandem with St. Michael’s Hospital, Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre and Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, the clinic will help new Canadians integrate into the Canadian health care system and facilitate their transition to other primary care providers. “We’ve brought together four different organizations to run rotating clinics for newly arrived Syrian refugees,” said Meb Rashid, director of Women’s College’s Crossroads

Clinic. “We’ll have care providers plus telephone back-up from specialties.” Rashid noted there is still no indication as to how strong the need will be. He hopes the newly elected Liberal government will make a decision quickly on federal policies surrounding Canada’s intake of refugees. “We’re a bit in the dark right now – we don’t know how many (people) and when (they will arrive,)” he said. “If the numbers hold up, we’re looking at the largest migration we’ve seen in 30 years in Canada.” Rashid said Syria’s health care system was relatively strong until four or five years ago, “when the bottom fell out.” That means the risk of infectious disease is low, and because of natural selection bias – those able to flee a war-torn country tend to be relatively young and healthy – he does not foresee a massive influx of people needing

chronic care. One key plank of the clinical services, however, will revolve around mental health. “We expect to see a fair amount of war-related trauma,” he said. “We know there are likely to be higher than usual rates of (posttraumatic stress disorder) and depression.” The clinic will address acute medical issues, chronic disease management, primary care for children, immunizations, prenatal care, preventative care and family planning advice, all of which are covered under health insurance. Translation services will also be provided where necessary. The clinic officially opened on Monday. Oct. 26 at the Crossroads Clinic, 76 Grenville St. Subsequent clinics will be held weekly on a rotating basis at the four participating organizations’ locations until next April.

Event showcases the work of Aboriginal artists Looking to do some holiday shopping? The Indigenous & Ingenious Show and Sale can help. The show will feature unique Aboriginal works by 15 artists, many based in Toronto. Artists include soapstone carver Ryan Hill, watercolour painter Joseph Sagaj, beadwork artist Naomi Smith, baby moccasin designer Frank Wassegijig, chef and culinary artist Charles Catchpole and jewellery designer and co-founder of the event Barb Nahwegahbow. The show was created to help First Nations artisans, artists and designers showcase and celebrate their talents and culture. Nahwegahbow
said it’s difficult for Aboriginal artists to find a place in Toronto to not only show their work, but sell it as well. The show has been running for a few years, but this is the first year it has expanded to include more than four artists. Indigenous & Ingenious will take visitors from a simple shopping trip to a full experience, celebrating cultural diversity. Everyone is welcome to visit the show and admission is free. Stop by the Ralph Thornton Centre at 765 Queen St. E. on November 21 and 22 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to browse and support talented local artists.
