For many disadvantaged Toronto youth, the world of runway fashion shows may seem out of reach. Thanks to a partnership between the TDSB, local charity the PACT (Participation, Acknowledgment, Commitment and Transformation) Urban Peace Program and sewing studio The Make Den, 11 youth have seen their fashion dreams become reality. Over the course of a fivemonth program, the youth were able to tap into their creativity, designing and sewing fashion lines or outfits designed specifically for their role models. Their designs will be on display at Youth Love Fashion, a runway show featuring guest models showcasing the styles. Bloor and Ossington resident Kyle Kofsky, who co-organized the show, said the ability to reach out to young designers held huge appeal. “Some of them never thought they could do something like this,” he said. “We wanted to show them that with the right support system and passion, they can.” The youth were part of the PACTFashion program, with Youth Love Fashion giving them a chance to put the skills they learned in the program to use >>>YOUTH, page 9

Making room for cyclists on Eglinton RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com As planners and cycling activists discussed how best to add protected bike lanes to Eglinton Avenue, Monique Drepaul was completely bewildered. For the past two years, Drepaul had been invited to

attend a series of Eglinton Connects community meetings alongside city planners and representatives from Cycle Toronto to discuss bike lanes – not a topic in which the small business advocate was heavily versed. Representing the interests of local business improvement

areas (BIAs) at the meetings – all resolutely against the idea of trading road or sidewalk space on Eglinton to accommodate cyclists – Drepaul quickly realized she couldn’t keep up with the jargon-heavy discussion. “Someone mentioned adding bollards to deal with the cyclists, and I’m sitting there thinking

to myself, please, someone ask what a bollard is,” recalled Drepaul, executive director of the Eglinton Way BIA. “And nobody did. I felt like I was the only person who didn’t understand the terminology being used.” Drepaul was part of a panel >>>BIAs, page 2

>>>from page 1 discussion during the 2014 Complete Streets Forum held Monday, Oct. 6, relating her experiences during the oft-contentious Eglinton Connects community consultations, which were completed earlier this year. Over the course of two years, more than 60 public meetings like those attended by Drepaul were scheduled. Along with feedback from online surveys, more than 5,000 people eventually weighed in on the study’s ambitious plans to revamp Eglinton in conjunction with the future completion of the 19-kilometre Crosstown LRT line, which includes encouraging more mid-rise development, creating green space and adding protected bike lanes. Drepaul – who was joined by Eglinton Connects planner Paul Kulig, Cycle Toronto director Jared Kolb, meeting facilitator Alex Heath, and chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat acting as moderator for the discussion – told forum attendees gathered

inside Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park she found the courage to speak up the more she learned about bike lanes. She asked for a glossary of planning terms to help understand the discussions and found out bollards are a series of short, vertical posts erected to cushion cyclists from car traffic. But Drepaul, who personally supported adding bike lanes, still couldn’t mollify the concerns of Eglinton Way and other local BIAs convinced having more cyclists on Eglinton would scare away customers in cars. Not helping matters was what she felt was the planners’ tendency to apply a onesize-fits-all approach when dealing with the BIAs. She felt they didn’t understand the nuances of communicating with local business of which some were heavily involved with social media, while others didn’t even have an email address. What finally swung the argument in favour of protected bike lanes was data

published by the University of Toronto, which showed clear evidence merchants were over-estimating the percentage of customers who drove versus those who rode, took public transit or walked. In reality, there were far more cyclists and transit riders and pedestrians – and far fewer drivers – than thought. “When my chair saw these numbers, it completely changed the perspective,” said Drepaul. Sensing the opportunity, she presented the figures in person to the BIA’s board of directors. “It was like the lightbulb had gone off and people were realizing cyclists also shop,” she said. Armed with her employer’s endorsement for the bike lanes, Drepaul was soon able to get other Eglinton-area BIAs on side, she said. Aided by the support of the BIAs, the study was endorsed unanimously by city council in May, which included adding protected bike lanes all along the Crosstown’s route between Jane Street and Kennedy Road.

Jordan Tannahill showcases play Concord Floral Adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s ‘The Decameron’ at Factory Theatre JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

A

t the tender age of 26, Kensington Market resident Jordan Tannahill has already scaled impressive heights in the theatre world. Tannahill, who was recently nominated for a Governor General’s Award for his play Age of Minority: Three Solo Plays, is set to premiere his latest work, Concord Floral, at Factory Theatre. While most nominees are longtime veterans of the theatre scene, Tannahill said he considers his relative youth as an asset in his productions. “The stories I tell tend to explore youth culture, and I think that’s something that can be missing from theatre,” he said. Concord Floral certainly fits in with his oeuvre in that way. The

play is adapted from Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th-century work The Decameron, but set in modern-day Vaughan. It follows a group of youth who hide out in the abandoned Concord Floral greenhouse when a plague sweeps through their city. “The idea of adolescent refuge is one I’m really connected to from growing up in suburbia – reclaiming abandoned buildings, unused bus shelters, big fields and parks,” he said. “Everyone who grew up in the suburbs is familiar with the idea of adolescents seeking space for themselves and the play definitely has interesting parallels with my own upbringing.” Tannahill grew up in a suburb of Ottawa, but has become ensconced in Toronto’s urban culture in recent years. He studied film at Ryerson University and

now splits his focus between theatre and film. His recent short film, Father, was the latest in a string of his works to appear at TIFF and elsewhere on the festival circuit. “I love being able to work in both theatre and film,” he said. “A lot of artists today work in a very multidisciplinary capacity. I do work in the visual art world as well – it’s an exciting time because of the 21st century hybridity in the arts.” Tannahill is also co-owner of Kensington Market arts venue Videofag, which he started up with his partner William Ellis in 2012. “We converted (Videofag) from an old barbershop as a place to show local, transgressive and alternative queer work in a variety of mediums,” he said. “I feel lucky that I’ve been able to leverage

the success I’ve had (in theatre) to help bring attention to other artists.” Tannahill’s past successes include the Dora Award-winning play rihannaboi95 and the Doranominated Post Eden. His work has earned him the 2014 Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award, the Inside Out Film Festival’s Emerging Canadian Artist Award and the first-ever Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Emerging Queer Artist Award, among other accolades. Concord Floral, which Tannahill wrote and is co-directing with his Kensington Market neighbour Erin Brubacher, will run from Oct. 16 to 26 at the Theatre Centre Mainspace, 1115 Queen St. W.

Hurricane Hazel: Lessons learned

S

ixty years ago today, Toronto woke up to a scene of horror. On the night of Oct. 15, accumulated heavy rains associated with Hurricane Hazel led to flooding that killed 81 people. On Raymore Drive along the Humber River, 32 houses were washed away and 30 people were killed. Five volunteer firefighters died when their truck was swept away as they tried to help a stranded motorist caught in the Humber’s flood waters. Along with the Humber, the Don and Rouge rivers and Highland Creek flooded their banks with enormous amounts of fast-moving water. By the time it was over, some 4,000 families across southern Ontario and more than 1,800 in Toronto had been left homeless. While 1954 may seem a long time ago to many, the impacts of Hurricane Hazel and how it changed land usage and development in Toronto are felt to this day. Also, judging by the many our view letters we’ve received from readers regarding the 60th anniverConservation sary, it is still well remembered by those who lived through it Authority or lost family members. See our formed as result collected coverage of Hurricane Hazel and letters from our readers at http://goo.gl/sF5WHE In her letter, Yvonne Rice remembers how she and her husband tried to help at Raymore Drive: “We drove to Raymore Drive and when we got there the Humber River was huge and houses were floating down the river with people on top screaming for help. The firemen were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people. I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live.” Madeline McDowell, who is now vice-chair of the Humber Watershed Alliance, was 13 when Hurricane Hazel struck. She said at the time many didn’t realize how deadly the storm had been until the next day. Coming on the heels of days of heavy rains in southern Ontario, Hurricane Hazel resulted in some 20 billion gallons of water rushing down the Humber, washing away everything in its path – bridges, houses, vehicles and people. After the hurricane, a conservation authority, now known as Toronto Region Conservation Authority, was formed to improve flood control measures and regulate development on flood plains. A hard lesson was learned by the death and destruction of Hurricane Hazel, but our city is now much better prepared for natural disasters.

To those considering voting early: Think about it

W

ith advance polls open this week, it is tempting for those with strong opinions about the future occupant of the Toronto mayor’s office to put on their voting pants and cast ballot now rather than Oct. 27. Certainly by this point, anyone paying even a bit of attention has heard enough from the Top 3 mayoral candidates to make a choice. As long as one doesn’t hold with the idea of strategic voting – which is to say, watching the polls up to Election Day and deciding where their vote best goes to, ahem, defeat a particular candidate – then there’s no reason to wait. If only it were as simple as that: that the future of the city rests solely, or even largely, on the shoulders of one mayor. It doesn’t, of course. There are 45 pairs of shoulders including the mayor, and while the mayor has

david nickle the city enough influence to carry most votes, the buck ultimately stops with 44 city councillors who can support or thwart an agenda as they see fit. Local candidates And while mileage may vary, it’s a fair guess that most voters haven’t had nearly as close a look at their local ward candidates as they have at the ChowFord-Tory trifecta. With the high-octane drama in the mayor’s office this past term, it’s also more of a challenge to assess the record of one’s incumbent councillor. All of them have been operating under extraordinary circumstances – working in an arena that is one-half local governance and one-half Lord

There are a few incumbents who’ve stood out either as candidates for relection or for the boot.

of the Flies. There are a few incumbents who’ve stood out either as candidates for re-election or for the boot. Giorgio Mammoliti, the Ward 7 councillor surely leads the pack in the latter: more than any other councillor not blood-related to the mayor he’s been a very publicly destructive force on council. Ron Moeser’s terrible attendance record can be partially excused as he was laid up for nearly a year from ankle surgery gone bad, but otherwise Ward 44 voters would be justified in turfing him. Long-serving councillor Norm Kelly, on the other hand, probably deserves

another victory lap in Ward 40 solely on the basis of his supply-teacher/deputy mayor role in the final, potentially fractuous year of this last term. Others, like Ward 22’s Josh Matlow or Ward 27’s Kristyn Wong-Tam, have maintained an active enough rookie term to make re-election a relatively easy choice. What about those many incumbents who kept their heads down through the term? And what do voters do in those seven wards with no incumbent? It boils down to this: voters who take advantage of advance voting opportunities have more before them than whether it’s to be Ford More Years or four new years. Getting it right will be delicate work, and nothing to be hasty about.

Walter Woodman’s $300 film garnering attention Kensington Market filmmaker’s film ‘Noah’ flows a failing relationship over social media JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Armed with an idea and a shoestring budget of $300, Kensingston Market resident Walter Woodman’s short film, Noah, has earned plenty of recognition. The film, which Woodman wrote and directed with Patrick Cederberg, was an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 and is set to be screened at the imagineNATIVE Festival, a showcase of the best works by First Nations artists. Woodman, whose mother is Mohawk, has created a few short films, but none of his prior works have caught the attention Noah has. “We made it while at Ryerson about a year ago,” Woodman said. “We got into TIFF last year and it’s been pretty crazy since then.” Indeed, it has earned a number of plaudits from reviewers and entertainment websites, with reviews speaking glowingly about the film. Admittedly, the film’s success even caught its creators off guard. “We had a $300 budget and we were proud of it, but we didn’t know it would get noticed this much,” Woodman said. T h e d i re c t o r s h a d a simple solution to the limits imposed by their tight financial constraints – keeping all the film’s action on the computer screen of the eponymous Noah. “He’s going through a rough patch with his girlfriend and (the film) follows through all his interactions with Facebook and social networking sites,” the filmmaker said. “It shows the degradation of his relationship not just through him talking to his girlfriend, but through friends, strangers, all sorts of people.”

Photo/COURTESY

Screen captures from the film Noah, by Walter Woodman, a movie about Noah’s breakup over social media. The film screens at ImagineNATIVE, Oct. 22 to 26.

The film takes a funny, but ultimately realistic look at the digital age and how that can impact romance and relationships in general. Despite the fact it takes place entirely on a computer screen, it nonetheless runs the gamut of emotions as Noah’s relationship falls apart as he watches. While neither Woodman nor Cederberg have faced situations exactly like Noah’s, they noted they – and others – can certainly relate to what he’s going through. “It’s rooted in past experiences we’ve had – sort of an amalgamation of experiences with other pieces thrown in,” Woodman said. “But it’s not just our experiences. I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and say ‘oh my God, that’s exactly the way it was for me

when I was a teenager.’” As an up-and-coming creative type, Woodman finds Kensington Market the ideal Toronto neighbourhood in which to live. “It’s super-eclectic, and in some ways, it’s like a Disney movie – you get your bread from the baker, your fruit from the fruit stand, your meat from the butcher,” he said. “There are also a lot of cool people there. There are sketchy characters as well, but that adds to the atmosphere.” Noah will screen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox as part of imagineNATIVE’s New Wave: Canadian Shorts Programme at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.

Choreographer’s current production loosely based on actress Greta Garbo JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com In his work as a dancer and choreographer, award-winning downtown Toronto choreographer Ofilio Sinbadinho knows all about solitude. While he has worked closely with colleague Apolonia Velasquez for years – they co-founded the Gadfly street dance repertory company as well as the TUDS Toronto Urban Dance Culture Festival – each often spends countless hours honing their craft alone. Their familiarity with the concept of solitude has helped fuel their creative process in choreographing their latest work, UPLICA – A silhouette of doubt. “There’s a stigma in society where if you see somebody alone in a crowd, you kind of feel pity for that person, but for some people, they need that,” Sinbadinho said. The work is actually loosely

based on details from the life of legendary – and legendarily reclusive – Hollywood star Greta Garbo. “We grabbed motifs from her story as opposed to trying to create a biography about her,” Sinbadinho said. “But it was a good story that related to our theme, and a lot of people, especially younger people, don’t know about (Garbo).” Sinbadinho added solitude helps him focus, though in the modern world when everyone’s life is on full display, it’s easy to feel as though he is missing out by spending 70 to 80 hours a week working. “There’s a little bit of pressure to get out more and be more social because everybody’s posting everything (online),” he said. U P L I C A w i l l f e a t u re performances by veteran dancer Laurence Lemieux and relative newcomer Erin Poole of Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie. With just two

dancers, the choreographers were tasked with creating a fulsome piece out of a sparse cast. “It’s the biggest production we’ve done that revolves more around character instead of movement,” Sinbadinho said. It also marks another step in the duo’s evolution as artists. They originally made waves on the urban dance scene, but have since branched out to work in other genres. “Some people are very dynamic and have a lot of movement, other people create very abstract conceptual dance,” Sinbadinho said. “I think we’re very much in the middle.” UPLICA will run at the Citadel, 304 Parliament St., from Thursday, Oct. 16 through Saturday, Oct. 25.

Youth fashion designers also organized Saturday matinee show >>>from page 1 in front of a live audience. While their designs are the show’s focal point, they were responsible for far more than creating unique fashions. “They were in charge of production, booking their models, choosing the music they want playing when the models are modeling their work, hair and makeup – everything,” Kofsky said. The collections feature pieces for men and women,

though there will be a special focus on women’s fashions, with many of the youth opting to create pieces specifically for a woman who has inspired them. Several of the role models will be on hand to model the fashions they inspired, including mayoral candidate Olivia Chow and former federal Cabinet member and Ontario Fairness Commissioner the Honourable Jean Augustine.

Many of the role models are closer to the designers’ hearts, however. “There’s one girl who is visually impaired who is making a garment for her sister,” Kofsky said. “She created her design by feeling the textiles and textures, and she’s really been inspiring to the other students.” Young designer Aziz Vivant said the PACTFashion program has been a great way to learn design basics, and Youth

Love Fashion is an exciting means of putting what he and his fellow designers have learned to the test. The family-friendly runway event will take place in the Azure Restaurant at the InterContinental Toronto Centre hotel, 225 Front Street East, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Know and recognize the signs of breast cancer As with many types of cancer, breast cancer is most successfully treated when it is detected early. Death rates are declining as a byproduct of the heightened awareness of breast cancer over the last 25 years and the increasing emphasis placed on screening. While the presence of any of the following symptoms does not necessarily mean breast cancer is present, the appearance of the following should be enough to inspire women and even men to visit their physicians for examinations and screenings. • A change in how the breast or nipple feels could indicate a larger problem. If the nipple is especially

tender and this persists for an extended period of time discuss this change with your physician. Similarly, if a lump or thickening develops on or near the breast or underarms, speak with your physician. • Another visible symptom of breast cancer is a change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast, which may appear similar to dimpling, not unlike an orange peel. Swelling or shrinking of the breast, especially when such symptoms appear on just one breast, may also indicate breast cancer. In addition, some women with breast cancer notice a sudden asymmetry with their breasts despite their breasts previously being symmetrical, and such a development should immediately be brought to the attention of a physician. • A nipple that appears different also may be a sign of breast cancer. Some women with breast cancer have noticed a nipple turned slightly inward or inverted prior to their breast cancer diagnosis. Skin of the nipple, as well as that of the breast and areola, which is the dark circle of skin around the nipple, may also become red, scaly or swollen when breast cancer is present.

Streetcars return to Queens Quay Road Sweeping Operation Toronto & East York District Transportation Services is getting ready to perform sweeping operations on the streets of Toronto & East York this fall. The purpose of the sweeping is to collect leaves that fall, naturally, onto the street. All streets will be swept on two occasions. The operation will continue until November 28, 2014.The map shows the area where the sweeping operation will take place. Please do not rake leaves onto the roadway or sidewalks from your property. City by-law officers will be enforcing the City of Toronto by-law that relates to the use of streets and sidewalks. Raking leaves onto the roadway is a by-law offence and could result in charges being laid. It is an offence to store, place or dispose of material, including fallen leaves in such a way that it may enter onto a street by any means, including wind or water. In addition, raking, blowing, placing or dumping leaves onto City property (sidewalk, roadway, catch basins, etc.,) can create dangerous conditions, cause flooding on the roadways or on property or cause accidents. Here’s how to put leaves out for collection: Use reusable containers (any rigid open-top container such as a garbage can, bushel basket, green plastic yard waste bin– no lids) or kraft paper yard waste bags. Put leaves at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled yard waste collection day. Check your collection calendar for your yard waste collection schedule and more helpful hints. Sorry, no plastic bags: The City does not collect leaves and yard waste in clear plastic bags or Halloween-themed plastic bags. (If you use these decorative bags, please empty the contents into one of the approved containers listed above before placing out for collection.

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com After two years of construction, temporary bus stops and delays, the streetcars are finally back to service along the waterfront’s main road. As of Sunday, Oct. 12 the 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina streetcars returned to Queens Quay following the completion of a newly-rebuilt rail corridor between Union Station and Exhibition Place. The work is part of an ongoing extensive renovation of the street by Waterfront Toronto from Bay Street to Lower Spadina Avenue. In addition to new tracks and overhead wiring, the relocated corridor runs in the median lane of the street. All 11 of the corridor’s signalized streetcar platforms were widened to accommodate the TTC’s new streetcar fleet. Ticket vending machines were also installed at various stops along the route. Access to the streetcar tunnel from Union Station was also restored, as well as the ferry docks termi-

nal platform inside Waterpark Place, located at 10 Bay. The return of the streetcars to Queens Quay was expected to be completed by July, but was further delayed when Waterfront Toronto experienced snags in its construction schedule due to last year’s harsh winter. For local businesses, the return of the streetcars – which was replaced by temporary buses starting in 2012 – also means the return of more customers who ended up avoiding the street after construction began two years ago. “How we survived God only knows. A lot of businesses closed down here,” said Sayed Raza, manager of Shwarma Guys, located at 218 Queens Quay West, on Sunday. Raza said he expected the restaurant’s business to increase as more foot traffic returns to Queens Quay. At Harbourfront Centre, one employee who lives in the area said the construction – which saw the old streetcar tracks dating back 25 years completely demolished and

rebuilt along the median of the street – was particularly onerous on residents. “Without the streetcars there was also some confusion for tourists wanting to get here,” said the employee who declined to give her name. In addition to the new tracks, the revitalization will also see the creation of a new pedestrian promenade, improvements to the Martin Goodman Trail, more trees and green space as well as infrastructure improvements below ground. The work is expected to be completed in time for the 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, hosted by Toronto. The completion of the streetcar corridor marks a “major milestone” in the estimated $150-million renovation of the street, according to Waterfront Toronto CEO John Campbell. “When the transformation of Queens Quay is complete, Toronto will finally have the grand waterfront boulevard it deserves,” said Campbell in a statement last week.

Ways to reduce the amount of leaves you put at the curb for collection: Feed leaves to your backyard composter now, plus stockpile leaves to add as dry material during the winter. Here’s what the City collects as yard waste: Leaves, plant/tree trimmings, weeds and brush. Branches measuring less than three inches or 7.5 cm in diameter should be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet or 1.2 min length and 2 feet or 0.6 m in diameter. Pumpkins and waste fruit from trees in your yard are also accepted. Sorry, we can’t accept: Soil, sod, grass clippings, logs or tree stumps. For more information on yard waste, please call 311 or visit us at www.toronto.ca/compost/yardwaste.htm

Learn to save a life

Mercedes-Benz Downtown teams up with Heart and Stroke Foundation

With every minute that passes without help, the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops seven to 10 per cent. There are 40,000 sudden cardiac arrests occurring every year in Canada, 7,000 in Ontario alone, which is why Mercedes-Benz Toronto Corporate Stores and The Heart and Stroke Foundation have partnered to offer their local community members the opportunity to learn life-saving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Mercedes -Benz Downtown, located at 761 Dundas St. E.,

will host complimentary HandsOnly™ CPR training sessions for the public on Sunday, O c tober 19, from 10:00am-11:30am and 1:00pm-2:30pm. The sessions will be conducted by certified medical practitioners. For 2014, all of Mercedes-Benz Downtown sponsorship dollars have once again been allocated exclusively to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. As a lead sponsor, they are dedicated to providing the community with the necessary training to increase chances of survival from cardiac arrest. L a s t y e a r, M e r c e d e s - B e n z Downtown trained over 125 community members in life saving HandsOnly™ CPR. Due to popular demand, infant CPR training has been added to this year’s sessions. Learning the skills is easy, and it could mean saving the life of a friend or family member. The Heart and Stroke Foundation encourages all Canadians to learn CPR.

“ The more people trained, the greater the chance of keeping a person who is experiencing cardiac arrest alive until an ambulance arrives,” says Andrew Lotto, Manager, Resuscitation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Through a consistent commitment to innovation, Mercedes-Benz has introduced many sophisticated safety and assistance systems that prevent accidents and allow valued customers to effectively negotiate a variety of challenging situations. “We are extremely proud to help contribute to safer roads, and it is this dedication to safety that compelled us to partner with the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The statistics are staggering and speak for themselves. CPR training saves lives, and we are proud to offer the opportunity to learn this crucial skill in our dealerships,” says Jens Israng, (former) Vice President and Head of Toronto Retail Operations. Mercedes-Benz Toronto Corporate

Mercedes-Benz Downtown invites you to learn CPR training on October 19.

S to re s re ce i ve d t h e H e a r t a n d Stroke Foundation’s Outstanding Corporate Partner Award for their 2013 partnership. When it comes to CPR, you’re in the driver’s seat. To register for the learning session, please visit www.mbcpr.ca. Space is limited, and participants will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.
