Lifeline Syria open streets ensuring young boy’s life not in vain JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Ever since the tragic images of three-year-old Alan Kurdi, the young Syrian refugee who was found drowned on a Turkish beach last week, sent shockwaves across the world, volunteers at downtown Toronto-based organization Lifeline Syria have been working hard to ensure his death was not in vain. Lifeline Syria launched in June in a bid to raise awareness of the plight faced by Syrians fleeing civil war. Founded by Ratna Omidvar, Ryerson University adjunct professor and executive director of the university’s Global Diversity Exchange, the organization has seen a massive surge in attention since last week. “The last week or so has definitely raised a lot more public awareness and led to us really needing to scale up fairly quickly,” said Malaz Sebai, a member of Lifeline Syria’s steering committee. “I’ve never seen this level of awareness of support. Speaking as a Syrian-Canadian myself, I get the sense that (Kurdi’s) unfortunate death could be a kind of awakening.” Sebai said Kurdi’s death has put a face on the ongoing crisis >>>ORGANIZATION, page 6

Market’s rich history unearthed The redevelopment of the north St. Lawrence Market building has turned up pieces of the market’s long and storied past. While conducting an archaeological assessment of the site prior to starting redevelopment, workers uncovered evidence of previous incarnations of the market dating back as far as 1831. The market itself goes back at least as far as 1803, when then-Lt. Gov. Peter Hunter designated the site as a public sale grounds for livestock and other merchandise and goods. The archaeological assessment of the site led to the discovery of foundation piers from the 1831 market

Dr. Peter Popkin, lead archaeologist at the site, said the high potential to preserve large areas of the original ground surface and the 1831 sub-surface structures, as well as the exceedingly important historical value of the property to the development of the City of Toronto, makes it likely that further archeological assessment of the property will be required.

St. Clair West filmmaker’s movie to screen at TIFF JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Long before paparazzi became ubiquitous around Hollywood, Jack Pashkovsky was the unofficial documentarian of all things celebrity. Pashkovsky went from being a poor Russian-Jewish immigrant sweeping studio lots to rubbing elbows with the stars of his time, being sure to snap candid snapshots of them while he was at it. While he never gained much acclaim for his snapshots, they captured and humanized the stars of the Golden Age. The photographer’s story is unveiled in The Man Who Shot Hollywood, a short biopic by Toronto filmmaker Barry Avrich, which will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. Av r i c h s t u m b l e d u p o n Pashkovsky purely by accident, but was instantly drawn to his story. “I was shooting another film when I met the guy,” Avrich said. “He had some of the most incredible Hollywood portraiture just tucked away in his room.” Avrich said Pashkovsky showed off the hundreds of film negatives he had stashed away – candid shots the photographer had no idea what to do with. “No publicist in the world would have allowed some of these shots – pictures like Cary Grant without his tie all done up – but that’s what (Pashkovsky) got,” Avrich said. Notably, the photos were all taken with the full cooperation of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. “(Pashkovsky’s photos) really

Nobody has time.” The photo collection captures big-name stars, noted recluses and those who were famous for reasons other than the silver screen. “He got everyone from (Greta) Garbo to Gloria Swanson to Amelia Earhart, and pictures of people who never liked being shot – Cecil B. DeMille, Errol Flynn like you’ve never seen him,” Avrich said. Avrich, who lives in the St. Clair West neighbourhood area, is a veteran documentary filmmaker, and while his CV spans multiple subjects, he has made a name for himself largely through biographical works. One race is very important because it’s Canada’s national 5K championship and the other because it’s a fundraiser for six local charities with a goal this year of $250,000. First off at 9 a.m. are the speedsters competing in the national 5K championship followed at 9:45 a.m. by the sold-out charity run, which ends with après-run hors d’oeuvres served by white-gloved waiters, courtesy of Yorkville restaurants. This is the sixth year for the nowannual race – and its second as a national championship. Since its inception, the B&O Yorkville Run has raised more than $360,000 for YWCA Toronto in support of its Elm Centre and women’s shelters, Mount Sinai Hospital, Prostate Cancer Canada and Jesse Ketchum Public School, and this year it will also be fundraising for Victim Services Toronto’s trauma dog program and Wellspring. Toronto City Hall’s 50th bash is about more than just architecture

T

oronto marks an important milestone this Sunday with celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toronto City Hall. The two half-circle towers, with the council chamber pod in the middle, that dominates Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic symbol of the city not just for residents but around the world. It’s another of the many great things about Toronto that should make all residents proud. To celebrate, there will be a free event from noon to 5 p.m. featuring entertainment by the Jordan John Band and a performance by STOMP dance competition finalists. Also taking the stage will be a group called the Clamshell Quintet, which is made up of four councillors and a deputy city manager. Master builders from LEGO will be on hand to help residents build a replica of Toronto City Hall and surrounding area. Inside, there will our view be photographs, architectural models and some of the original Take time to furnishings that were specifidesigned for the building. know Toronto’s cally As was shown during this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan history Am/Parapan Am Games, the building and Nathan Phillips Square are an important gathering place for residents. Whether it’s hosting special celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties or just serving as a nice place to sit and have lunch in the summer or to go for a skate in the winter, the area is always busy and reflective of the life in the city. It also serves as an historical reminder of preamalgamation Toronto as its formation coincided in many ways with the creation of Metropolitan Toronto in the late 1950s. An open competition was started in 1957 to design the new city hall, and the eventual winner was the design of Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Ground was broken in 1961 by then City of Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. It officially opened Sept. 13, 1965. Along with celebrating a community gathering spot and a uniquely designed building, Toronto residents can also use this month to find out more about how Toronto City Hall came to be and how the city has grown and developed over the past 50 years. Free lectures on that very subject are set for Sept. 10 and Sept. 24 in the council chambers starting at 7 p.m. For more info on the celebrations, go to www. toronto.ca/cityhall50th

Council set for a busy few months

I

t has been a quiet summer at Toronto City Hall – the kind of quiet summers we’re going to have to get used to in the years after Rob Ford’s pyrotechnic mayoralty. If it weren’t for the pyrotechnics of the federal election, indeed, we might as well all have run off to cottages and patios for August and tried to get our head around city government again. Lucky for us – there’s every indication that this new fall legislative session will be much like the old session. Council will be fine-tuning, reviewing and in some cases re-debating issues that have already had their day in the sun in this latest term. There will be a refined design to the Gardiner ‘hybrid’ reconstruction, that council narrowly approved in concept earlier this year. In c a s e a n y o n e h a d wearied of Councillor Jim Karygiannis’ bloviations on the Uber ride sharing service during the Pan Am Games, take heart: council

david nickle the city will be looking at a regulatory regime that will bring the popular service under something resembling control. There will be a Scarborough subway debate, perhaps, along with a serious talk about Tory’s SmartTrack proposal that will for a span align almost directly with the new Scarborough subway. If I were to place odds, I would say it’s unlikely that council will move off course on either plan. But if you were done feeling unsteady about spending all that money on such a small piece of transit, you might want to break out the smelling salts this fall. There will be smaller fights too. Later this month, the allies of the Muzik nightclub at Exhibition Place will be squaring off to deal with the Toronto and East York Community Council’s

move this week to have city staff try and get the liquor licence removed from the nightclub, in the wake of the deadly shootings there this summer. Add to that labour negotiations with the city’s unionized workers and a budget debate that will once again have to accommodate both Mayor Tory’s costly service improvement agendas and his imperative to keep tax increases at or below the rate of inflation – and it’s going to be a full agenda for the next few months. It is worth noting, again, what a recursive cycle we find ourselves living. It might not be a bad thing: government is a long game, and under a serious-minded regime it can become a trifle grinding. But grinding away often c re a t e s g o o d , s m o o t h things. Here’s hoping it’s so.

Dave Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column runs every Thursday.

Dog parks are for pups, not picnickers To the editor: I have an issue with people using the leash-free area at dog parks for picnics. This, in itself, is not upsetting except that the dogs all congregate where the food is and often make nuisances of themselves. In addition, many of the picnickers, being kindhearted, will give food and bones to the dogs, not realizing that cooked bones (especially chicken bones) can splinter and cause severe internal damage in the digestive system. In some cases, dogs are on special diets and should not eat the bits they are offered, but being dogs, will eat them anyway. In my case, I prefer that mine not get into the habit of accepting food from strangers. It is a constant battle trying to get them away from the picnics and back to playing. Lucie Karpinec

>>>from page 1 taking place in Syria, bringing urgency to the situation by showing just how dire it is. “It’s not a new crisis – it’s been going on for four years now – and there are thousands of young children like Alan who, unfortunately, have had their time come too soon,” he said. Lifeline Syria had been holding monthly information sessions to let Canadians know how they could help Syrian refugees, either through sponsorships or donations. Now, the organization is holding weekly events, and attendance has boomed from roughly 50 people per sessions to the point where an event at city hall scheduled for Sept. 10, which was set to hold up to 120 people, is already at capacity. While Lifeline Syria’s website was drawing some 300 visitors a day, Sept. 4 saw more than 10,000 people visit. “We’ve gotten a lot of atten-

tion, and in terms of people wanting to take the next step to help out, that’s multiplied fivefold,” Sebai said. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, a s Canadians have stepped up to try to help Syrian refugees, many are finding some of the easiest avenues to do so closed off. Modifications to sponsorship regulations have effectively closed off some of the easiest methods through which Canadians can sponsor refugees. “It used to be that a church or a group of five citizens could sponsor a refugee, and that didn’t require an intermediary,” Sebai said. “The government modified the laws in 2012 so now they only work for refugees the UN has recognized. The UN’s simply overwhelmed; they’re not recognizing anyone right now.” Lifeline Syria is seeking to bridge the gaps currently between refugees, sponsorship groups and sponsorship

agreement holders, which are now necessary. “We’re working a lot with the Syrian-Canadian community to find Syrian refugees with connections to Canada, and looking to help people connect who otherwise wouldn’t know where to go to take the next steps,” Sebai said. Lifeline Syria’s efforts have been bolstered by a $300,000 donation from the provincial government, announced by St. Paul’s MPP Eric Hoskins Friday, Sept. 4. Mayor John Tory has also implored Torontonians to help out in any way they can. Ryerson University is also pitching in with a Lifeline Syria Challenge (www.ryerson.ca/ lifelinesyria), aiming to urge action among other postsecondary institutions.

The seventh annual Dodger Tournament to benefit St. Michael’s Hospital will take place at Steam Whistle Brewery tonight.

Annual dodgeball tourney raises funds for St. Mike’s Hospital JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com More than 200 young professionals will be taking aim at an ambitious fundraising goal – and at each other – when they take part in a charity dodgeball tournament at Steam Whistle Brewery tonight. The seventh annual Dodger Tournament will see teams squaring off against one another throughout an evening of fun and friendly competition, with proceeds going to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation. The event was started up by St. Michael’s Young Leaders (SMYL), a group of young men and women who were looking to make a difference in the world. “It was a good way for me to use the skills I earned in business to help a worthy organization,” said Tyler Howard, one of the founding members of SMYL. “We were all like that; we didn’t necessarily have a huge amount of money early in our careers to donate as much as we’d like, but we definitely wanted to make a difference.” The group hosts two other annual events – a charity golf tournament known as the

Duffer and a gala dubbed the Giver – but the dodgeball tournament is always the biggest of the three. “Most of the teams are corporate-sponsored teams – banks, law firms – it’s kind of a Bay Street competition of sorts,” Howard said. “Brad (Lawrence, another of SMYL’s co-founders) brought up the idea soon after the ‘Dodgeball’ movie came out, and I thought it was kind of hokey, but I’m glad I was wrong.” The dodgeball court is a do-it-yourself affair, with 36 teams taking part in 10-minute games, though the actual games are often secondary to the fun atmosphere taking place throughout the venue. Teams are encouraged to show up in costume, and when a team is off the court, the members can mix,

mingle and enjoy some snacks and beverages from Steam Whistle. Howard said the young professionals who participate are also happy just to be able to do something for a good cause. “Most of the people on our board and a lot of people who join us are urbanites who live in and care about the downtown core, so St. Michael’s was a good fit,” he said. “It’s a critical care hospital, and a hospital like that requires altruistic, philanthropic downtown residents to help make sure it can keep doing the work it’s doing.” Spectators welcome While all the team slots for this year’s event have been filled, spectators are invited to join the party for a donation of $10. The Dodger Tournament will take place at Steam Whistle, 255 Bremner Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. For more information on SMYL, including a link to the Dodger and its other charitable initiatives, visit www. stmichaelsfoundation.com/about/ volunteers/young-leaders.html

Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shoppers who are planning to buy their products. On behalf of Metroland Media and your community newspaper, Pulse Research has surveyed our readers and collected in-depth information about what shoppers are planning to buy in the next 12 months. John Marling, founder of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospecting tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.” The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Marling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of our readers completed the

40-minute online survey, providing an extremely reliable sampling. The data gleaned from 4,357 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumbers to financial planners,” he said. Details The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers: w 3.2% plan to have laser eye surgery w 5.6% say they will go to an audiology clinic w 10.5% need an electrician w 16.9% are planning to call a handyman w 42.3% say they will shop in a bookstore w 24.9% say they will start using or will change their auto insurance provider w 13.5% plan to have shoes repaired w 8.7% need a tune-up or repair for a bicycle w 4.9% are planning to buy a bed for their dog Ia n Pro u d f o o t , p u b -

lisher and vice-president of Metroland Media in Toronto, York, Simcoe and Muskoka, is thrilled to support local businesses through this new corporate initiative. “This is extremely valuable information for our local business owners who rely on us to reach their customers, our readers,” Proudfoot said. “Knowing how many people in the market are ready and willing to spend money locally gives us the knowledge to guide our advertisers in the right direction. It really is a win-win situation for local businesses and local shoppers.” Pulse of Metroland offers very detailed information to businesses in each category. For example, those readers planning to shop at a furniture store in the next 12 months indicated what they were intending to buy – living room furniture, a new mattress, an area rug or other items.

Former Toronto mayor Barbara Hall to attend as honourary co-chair of walk >>>from page 1 support the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). The downtown organization provides counselling, peer support, educational outreach, employment assistance and other crucial supports for those affected by HIV/AIDS. “It’s a personal event for a lot of people,” said Chris Thomas of ACT, who noted that many people living with HIV/AIDS are discriminated against and often feel isolated and alone. “Coming to the event as a person living with HIV and seeing hundreds of people in support of you is definitely a great feeling.” In addition to the walk, the event will feature live performances, family activities such as face painting and buttonmaking, after-parties in the Church-Wellesley Village and more. “There’s a lot going on, but the biggest part of the event and the biggest show of support is just getting bodies on the ground, walking and

participating in the event,” Thomas said. This year’s AIDS Walk comes not long after a breakthrough study showed use of HIV medication Truvada could actually prevent HIV infections. While this is welcome news, it is hardly a bulletproof solution. “It’s upwards of 92 per cent effective and could be as high as 99 per cent effective,” Thomas said. “It’s a step in the right direction, but we have to keep raising funds and raising awareness because there are a lot of people out there living with (HIV/AIDS) and who will still be diagnosed with it in the future.” The walk will be attended by honourary co-chairs Barbara Hall and her partner Max Beck. The former Toronto mayor and her partner have been long-time allies in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and their early adoption of the cause helped break down some of the stigma

surrounding the illness. The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life will start at Yonge-Dundas Square on Sunday, Sept. 13. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 11:30 and the walk itself starting at noon.
