Dear readers, It’s difficult not to be inspired by the achievement of Kuwait’s hardworking and talented individuals. Not that we’re trying not to be inspired, but I would imagine that it would indeed be very difficult if ever someone tries. Again, not that I would. We introduce you in this issue to iWash, a car wash station that is eco-friendly, efficient and unique. Seeing that an entrepreneur like the owner of this business Adnan Al-Obaid is starting a business that relies partly on the sustainable energy of the sun is indeed praiseworthy. We also introduce you in this issue to the latest talk of the town for movies lovers, Grand Experience which is a VIP theater at Grand Cinema. Located in Hamra Tower, this new cinema is luxurious and unique, and you will not regret paying it a visit to see for yourself. We’re very proud of the many events that are taking place in Kuwait during the same period of time. Many exhibitions, conventions and events are taking place simultaneously, who could say that life is boring for the youth in Kuwait? We will keep our promise and introduce you to what we find to be unique and special around town, so stay tuned for our next issue. Kind regards,

takes Kuwait The latest Zain ad for the national and liberation days took people back to the most beloved eras of Kuwait’s recent history, highlighting the most memorable pop culture gems. Musical performances, soccer team accomplishments, television series and beloved characters, all were encapsulated in a live performance in Kuwait 360 Mall in front of a live audience where were taken aback by the outstanding performance. theCITY talked with Zain’s marketing team about this incredible show. theCITY: Your latest ad was the talk of the town; it took people back to the most beautiful memories of their past. How did you come up with such an idea? ZAIN: It is our strategy at Zain to be an interactive brand and try to develop brand engagement initiatives that touch our consumers in an emotional way and build a strong relationship with them. This performance comes after last year’s flash mob success, which raised the bar quite high in terms of engagement, quality and surprise element. We started brainstorming from last year, thinking of ways to interact and ignite the patriotic feelings in our everyday consumer while maintaining a similar if not greater standard. We as Kuwaitis feel strongly about our past achievements in terms of popular culture, theatrical, musical and historical events. Based on that, our objective was to encourage, inject optimism and challenge the youth of Kuwait to make and create even higher and greater achievements.

theCITY: How long did it take you to prepare for this? How would you describe working on this project?

ZAIN: We have been brainstorming about this initiative since last year. The concept went through several phases where it developed into something that was doable, different, and epic. The actual execution was done in 35 days. Working on this project was extremely challenging and exciting. Being at rehearsals everyday was never boring and every time we go through performances it’s like seeing it for the first time.

theCITY: How did it feel bringing people back to such great memories from the past, especially since Zain (MTC) was the first telecom company in Kuwait?

ZAIN: We all feel attached to our past and there are certain scenes that highlight the establishment of MTC (in the 80’s era) to MTC Vodaphone and its evolvement throughout the past 30 years. We focused in the 90’s on MTC-Vodaphone’s most popular TV ad associated with the most popular soccer cheerleader (Algobgob) and we also highlighted the transformation from MTC Vodaphone to Zain and how Zain created a culture on its own in Kuwait through the plays and other multimedia tools. Overall we felt great and very emotional however our main objective was not only to bring the past but to clearly portray to people that we have great potential in creating an enriched culture

The idea was developed into creating three grand eras (60-70, 80 and 90-2000) within a stage that looked like a TV. In the 60-70 era we highlighted the independence of Kuwait and the first parliament. It also marked some of the most famous musicals and TV shows. Even the makeup and costumes of the performers were grey and white reflecting the look and feel to ensure the viewers re-live that era. The perfection of the execution created a great buzz within the audience. The 80’s also highlighted great events like our national soccer team golden era, famous TV shows like “Khalti Egmasha” and plays like “Bye Bye London”. The 90’s-2000 we started off with a quick flashback of the invasion and then we concentrated the performance on our liberation. We also highlighted women’s rights, MTV Vodaphone rebranding into Zain and some of Zain’s popular plays created in that Era.

A Wonderful World

back to the golden eras

theCITY: The details of costumes, the selection of certain pop culture songs and characters and events , and portraying those on stage was almost impeccable. Can you talk to us a little bit about that? Did you face any challenges with this? ZAIN: It was very hard to summarize decades and translate them into a synchronized performance while ensuring a chronological order. A lot of online research and focus groups were conducted to ensure every detail was covered and accurate. There were more than 108 costume pieces and all were custom made. For the grey and white performers make up, it was tested for five days until it was perfected. The stage had to built three days before the performance and we only had 4 hours to rehearse on set before the grand event. Another challenge was arranging a space that held all the props, 70 staff members, a designated makeup and changing area.

theCITY: Special thanks and appreciation from Zain, to whom? ZAIN: Special Appreciation to JWT Advertising Agency, 360 Mall and Lightbug Production House

How to Become a Beautiful Butterfly

D

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. ---Neale Donald Walsch

ear readers, I am so pleased to meet with you once again. Spring has come to Kuwait and it is a time for renewal. Flowers are blooming and butterflies are fluttering all about. Let’s remember my dear readers, the butterfly was once a caterpillar which spun a cocoon and with time and effort, transformed into a beautiful butterfly. The butterfly is free to fly everywhere and anywhere but only after it chose to transform. Let’s take a look at your life. Do you want strong positive change? Well, guess what, to begin your transformation, you must move out of your comfort zone. Your comfort zone is your imaginary bubble that you have become comfortable in. This bubble keeps you in your safe zone and your life stagnant. It confines your development and growth. Once you leave your comfort zone and are no longer afraid of the unknown you begin to leave this place of safety. So, do you want to become a butterfly? For those who want to transform, these steps will assist you into moving out of your comfort zone:

1. Recognize where you are stuck

The first step is to know that you are stuck and need to make a change. Take the time to sit down on a regular basis and assess how we are progressing in the various areas of our life is a great way to flag this, awareness is key. Remember, as a human, you cannot stay stagnant, if you are not growing you are dying, you cannot stay in the same place. Lookout for comfort as it is a very dangerous thing. You may look at your life and see that things seem to be going fine and relax but this is very dangerous. Take a moment to assess if you are telling yourself some of these phrases which keep you in your comfort zone. • • • • • •

I am overwhelmed and don’t have time. It has to be perfect. I can’t do this. I should… I need to…. I will never be able to change

2. Know your fear

Knowing what scares you allows you to know what needs to be changed. Some fears are good and help us weigh up our choices in life, but a lot of our fear is unnecessary and counter productive. Stare your fears in the face and see them for what they really are. To go beyond your comfort zone, you need to work out where the boundaries lie. A good way to do this is to figure out what makes you feel nervous. When you begin to leave your comfort zone, you get that feeling in your stomach like you are nearing the top of a roller coaster. That uneasiness is an indicator that your body knows a massive change is about to take place. You’re about to be launched into a whole new level of speed with

16

March 2013

exciting twists and unexpected turns. Your body will be taken to the highest point and then dropped into the deepest depths of the ride, only to be spun around all over again in a minute-long vortex of excitement.

3. Do what scares you

Moving out of your comfort zone is scary because it’s something new. People stay where they are because they are afraid of trying something new. Fear and paralysis of failure or a bad decision is something they just cannot digest. Life is a series of opportunities, how you assess them or hide from them will determine the life you lead. If you do not expand your comfort zone and do not take a leap, you will never know what life had in store for you. Try new things in small steps, if it works, keep going, if not, adjust it. Commit to taking action.

4. Make it a habit Now that you have become accostumed to doing things that scare you, things are much easier. Allow new things become a part of your life. Behavior can be self taught and programmed. Plan and schedule things to do. Remember to hold yourself accountable. If you can’t hold yourself accountable, ask a friend or family member to help. If you prefer to get professional help, get a coach, it’s our job to help. Dearest readers, take a leap and achieve your wildest dreams. All your dreams are just beyond your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to become a butterfly beautiful and free. If you need any help, connect with me, I would love to help!

What To Look For and How To Prepare

o you plan to build your dream home? Or are you considering a renovation? If so, you must be on the lookout for an Interior Designer to fashion out what has been in conceived in your heart. So what is Interior Design & how does it help us. Interior Design is the sole of any beautiful architecture& not just about the building’s interior. The interior space needs to be aesthetically pleasing but at the same time maintain its functionality. Standard Architectural Plans would rarely suffice the client’s needs wholly. & in order to save funds, from hiring an Interior Designer and modifying the architects plan quite few people make the critical error of accepting what has been offered even when they would have preferred a major overhaul, like detaching the toilet from the bathroom or creating a smaller living space to gain enough space for a home office for example. And when they realize that they are serving the house instead of vice versa, they spend even more money for alterations than they would if hiring an interior designer when starting the project preferable in parallel with the development of the architectural design . And since it is difficult to decide what Interior Design meets your need which also incorporates the need for improvement or alterations in future, until one starts using them. Hence its advised to hire an Interior Designer, to hire a specialist that will help you make your dream house a place you escape to. So now the major questions.. What should you be prepared for when your looking for a designer and what you should be ready to answer when you find the right designer. It’s a basic that we will first need a plan to start with. Use this plan when you are window shopping for a designer, keep an eye on how the designer find weakness in your plan and how helpful he or she is in the first meeting.. It›s also most important that you look at previous jobs accomplished by the designer. Look for their style, do you speak the same language? If the designer seems to be working along one style throughout their project, ask your self is this the style you want? Because most probably that is what you will be getting. If the designer is diverse then they will most probably be able to adapt to your needs. however, you also do not want a very flexible designer that will do “anything» you want, because if you knew what you wanted and how to do it right you wouldn’t really need a designer, would you?. Look for a designer that will guide you to what is right for your needs and taste. When you find the right designer for you, before they kick off into designing your space they will do a lot of prodding as well as questioning. From a client perspective, you should not only be ready to answer them but also able to communicate them wisely. The way of reaching the ultimate space that you dream of lies entirely in your hands. Below are some question you should expect from your designer so be prepared in facilitating the design process and getting the best of your interior designer.

18

March 2013

1. How will your space be used most of the times? Will it be a room for activity, for relaxing, for working or perhaps a studio? Consider how it will be used for the majority of the time. 2. Will your space occupy other using? If secondary uses are planned for this room, list them as well. Areas for different uses must be incorporated into the plan from the beginning. 3. Will your space be a high traffic area? Can you have a rough estimate of how many will use this space? Study the location of this space to determine if it can be used as you would like without interrupting a natural traffic flow of your overall space. For example, a designer will not want to place a space where you will entertain people or guests in the same corridor leading to the master bedroom 4. What other functions are required in the space you plan to design ? If ultimately you want the project to include other rooms, those requirements should be laid out in the beginning even if the actual work is to be done at a later date. 5. What type of lighting do I want or need in this space? Do I need bright lights for games and activity, warm subtle light for quiet times, or perhaps some of each? 6. Will I need special noise reduction or sound enhancement elements incorporated into the design? For example, for a home theatre you may want to consider using materials that provide for better sound quality. 7. Do I want and, and is it possible to add extra windows or doors? You may want a window for enjoying certain natural light, but the room must be able to accommodate them. 8. What kind of feeling do I want the space to have? Here’s where paint color, fabrics and textiles can be used in different ways to create the perfect mood for the room. I suggest preparing a mood board collage. 9. What is my total budget for the project? It’s easy to get carried away when creating a dream space. Know your limit and stay within it.

Optimus, Where Creativity And Convenience Meet 22

March 2013

This is the best furniture I have ever seen in my life. It’s modern, chic, smart and convenient. I fell even more in love when I met Alia and Ghanim, the two creators of this Kuwaiti furniture and interior design business. They started a business called Optimus in 2004, and the journey of their business is continuously evolving. I first found out about them in a local furniture exhibition a couple of years ago, and was very curious to find out more about them but missed the opportunity to meet them. As this issue’s focus is creative concepts, and since I’m obsessed with furniture, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to meet the people behind Optimus and introduce them to the readers. The most exciting part was their furniture line Funkyture. It lives up to the name -- it is indeed funky and neat. I’m not sure how I can say this without sounding like I’m exaggerating, so I’ll just say that this is how I want to furnish my home. Because they care a lot about creating furniture that is convenient, they’re now moving towards fixing small spaces in apartments with things that make life easier on their clients. I saw for instance that they’re fixing a small space in an apartment to be convenient and make life a lot easier on clients. In short, whatever space or requirements you have, this creative duo will work with and deliver you with the best results. That’s the promise Optimus gives, and according to the testimonies of many people, it’s what actually happens. Here is my quick chitchat with Alia and Ghanim.

Photography by Abdulrhman Al-Yousef

When did you start Optimus Designs (and why did you choose the name Optimus)? We are two partners who started in 2004 and have chosen the name to reflect the optimum in design we would love to achieve in all its disciplines whether it be architecture (since we both are architects), interior, furniture design or even in graphics. What inspires you to make this your furniture? We love versatility and wanted to reflect that in our pieces making them unique hence the name of our furniture line “ funkyture”, (funky/ furniture). Each piece is done to cater to the everyday needs of our customers’ modern lifestyle. An example of this would be a coffee table that has cup holders, trays, tissue box, and trash can all in one. This flexibility will also help in managing space which is also an important aspect of the modern lifestyle where smaller apartments are become the norm for our generation. You have a line of products that use some old Kuwaiti phrases from our popular culture, like TV series and ads (Kitco for example). Can you tell me a little bit about that? With the rise of pop culture and our generation looking for memories from our childhood, we wanted to do something that caters to our generation and reflects our culture. We introduced elements from childhood like famous cartoons and food to try to revisit our memories and get nostalgic. In a way this also reflects our aesthetics trying to combine elements to create a versatile piece that can last a long time and adapts with change taking its strength from the past. How do you see the market of furniture and home accessory designs here in Kuwait? It has been changing and growing the past few years as we see more young Kuwaiti designers joining the field bringing in different ideas, however the market is still young and hopefully together we can raise the bar collectively

Do you have a showroom? If yes, where is it located? If no, when do you plan to launch one? We don’t have a showroom currently. We are at the process of looking into a showroom as we think that would be the best way forward. Is your furniture available readily or do you make it on demand? We are based on custom design to fit each client’s needs however we do have some pieces that we created for exhibitions and others that we created just to keep our creativity going Have you participated in exhibitions in Kuwait? Yes we have created our own exhibitions as well as participated in P2BK (Proud to be Kuwaiti), Celebrate and most recently Bait Art Expo Have you participated in exhibitions outside Kuwait? No Who buys Funkyture from you? Who are your clients? Our clients for both furniture and design are both corporate and individual, and our projects range from residential, to offices to showrooms and even restaurants. Do you face any difficulties with clients’ demands? Some clients come to us with very specific ideas and the challenge comes in balancing their requirements with our own creative ideas and output, and we thrive to achieve that goal and satisfy the client, which is what keeps us going in this business. Where would you like to take Optimus Design in the future? All around the world, or bring the world to it Anything you’d like to say to individuals who have creative ideas but aren’t there to pursue them yet? Believe in yourself and take each challenge as a step to creating your dreams.

We at theCITY Magazine had the wonderful opportunity to visit Haya House, a hidden gem tucked in the neighborhoods of Kaifan. Even though it’s been around for a couple of years now not many may know of it’s wonderful existence.

Chic Flair, Passion For Elegant

Decor! 26

March 2013

Haya House is an art more than a pure business, and as soon as we entered we couldn’t help but feel inspired, from the relaxing music in the background to the lit candles around -- it was all serene, gorgeous and breathtaking. What started as a hobby, decorating houses for friends and family was made into a small business in 2006. A house was bought and converted into a showroom displaying selective, fashionable and state of the art items. The talented people behind this are two sisters Deena and Dalia who are passionate for details of furniture, accessories and textiles. Dalia specializing in interior design from KLC School of Design (London). The showroom itself is a piece of art with eight rooms displaying beautiful array of selected pieces of furniture and accessories. Each room we entered had its own character from vibrant textures to feathered chandeliers you couldn’t help but fall in love with the details. One room in particular was filled with pastel colored tea cups, cake stands and decorated cups a definite must see for tea lovers or if your looking for that perfect house warming gift.

When we think about a word to describe the experience at Grad Cinema, the word ‘perfection’ is the only word that seems to be doing this place justice. The experience is certainly unparalleled. Let’s start from the beginning: walking into the Grand Class lounge, you will be at awe by the great ambiance. The luxurious great decor, the lighting, the superior reception, it all equals utter luxury. A true ultimate in cinema luxury, the Grand Class special theatre is designed to provide an intimate setting, unparalleled comfort, and a first class experience. It delivers exactly that, and even more. One of the most admirable features is the seating arrangement at the Grand Class theater. It is limited to seat only 20 guests, and this enhances the private and exclusive ambience. Ever wanted to go watch the latest blockbuster with a group of friends without being annoyed by noisy individuals who laugh and gasp ever so loudly? This is for you. Better yet: do you plan to go to the movies with a group of friends who are notorious for laughing loudly, shrieking shrilly and clapping their hands in excitement? Come on, we all have friends who do that. So round up a group of your friends and book the Grand Class theater. They can let go of their inhibitions and clap and laugh, and you won’t have to feel embarrassed for them. We’re not kidding! Seriously though, a the Grand Class theater is perfect if you plan to book it and surprise a friend or family member with tickets to their long-awaited blockbuster. They can enjoy the ambiance and the great food menu. Speaking of the food, so the Grand Class theater has a special butler service. That’s right, there will be a butler waiting at you, and a specially-designed menu of foods, snacks and drinks to complement your movie experience.

The seats are the most comfortable seats we have seen at a movie theater. They are reclining leather armchairs with superb control, and all the seats are arranged very well in a way so that every seat can view the screen very well. Grand Class, which is one of the services of Grand Cinema, is located at Hamra Tower in the heart of Kuwait City. You can find out more information about it on http://kw.grandcinemas.com/

ADHD - The Double Edged Sword

O

ne of the most common phrases I hear when it comes to referrals is “behavioral problems”. This is a very basic and generic description that could encompass a variety of difficulties and issues. Frequently this phrase, «behavioral problems», is accompanied with a request to check on the attention and activity level of the child. This is suggestive of a growing knowledge of the existence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but not necessarily a correct understanding of it. This is a problem... but perhaps it is a good problem to have. With our growing familiarity of the term ADHD, we need a fuller and more accurate definition of this term.

rules and explain consequences to actions. Be a role-model yourself. Help your child organize his space, thoughts and actions.

So let us start from the beginning, what is ADHD?

1) Six or more of the following symptoms of inattention have persisted for at least six months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with the developmental level: Inattention often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behaviour or failure of comprehension) often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework) often loses things necessary for tasks or activites at school or at home (e.g. toys, pencils, books, assignments) is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli if often forgetful in daily activities.

You will find in the green chart the official diagnostic criteria ADHD. It is very important, however, to get a professional diagnosis from a specialist and not rely on self-diagnosis. Simply, ADHD signifies the difficulties a child faces in relation to his attentional, impulsive and activity levels. The child with ADHD also often shows delayed social skills development, which affects friendship skills and other relationships. Children with ADHD are often labeled “naughty”, “lazy” and sometimes harsher words like “stupid”. The child is not necessarily aware of his difficulties, but feels like he is being judged unfairly, might have some feelings of helplessness, as well as anger. One of my clients, a sweet 7-year-old boy once said “I try to be good, but I am always naughty. I cannot do it”. In this instance you can feel the child’s struggle and frustration, the child does have the motivation to change, but he does not have the skills he needs to be successful. Briefly below I will deconstruct the difficulties and provide some solutions. This is a chart I often use for training professionals and parents. It is very simple and basic, but provides some necessary information.

Attention: A child or adult with ADHD would benefit greatly from understanding what their learning style is, and by being engaged using multiple modalities and ways. As a parent, teacher or professional, one must help the child maintain attention by providing information visually, verbally and actively/concretely. Deficit: Personally, I am not a fan of complete elimination diets nor haphazard prescriptions (whether it is drugs or supplements). The process of dealing with ADHD, is usually a process of trial and error. We must try, through eliminations and inclusions to see what works best for our child. Always do full medical check-ups to see if your child has any medical conditions and any allergies/intolerances. After that we can start with decreasing the child’s intake of unhealthy food habits (sweets, fried food, etc), increasing activity level, providing structure, educating ourselves and the child about the challenges, and also thinking about medication options. Hyperactivity: It is critical to engage in physical activity. It is not only a release, but it is also vital that the person with ADHD has a positive attitude about his activity. S/he can be a great athlete, dancer, performer, and does not have to always be punished or criticized for his/her energy. Disorder: Incorporate structure, discipline and routine into your life. Reminders are key! Have visual reminders of the house/classroom

DSM - IV CRITERIA FOR ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition) contains the Diagnostic Criteria for the most common mental disorders including: description, diagnosis, treatment, and research findings. Below is the Diagnostic Criteria for diagnosing Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder:

A. Either (1) or (2)

2) Six or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with the developmental level: Hyperactivity often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat often leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness) often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly often talks excessively is often ‹on the go or often acts as if ‹driven by a motor› Impulsivity often has difficulty awaiting turn in games or group situations often blurts out answers to questions before they have been completed often interrupts or intrudes on others, e.g. butts into other children’s games B. Some hyperactivity - impulsive or inattentive symptoms that cause impairment were present before the age of 7 years. C. Some impairment from the symptoms is present in more than two or more settings (e.g. at school or work or at home). D. There must be clear evidence of clinically significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning. E. The symptoms do not occur exclusively during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other Psychotic Disorder, and are not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g. Mood Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Dissociative Disorder, or a Personality Disorder). Based on these criteria, three types of ADHD are identified: ADHD, Combined Type: if both criteria 1A and 1B are met for the past 6 months ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Type: if criterion 1A is met but criterion 1B is not met for the past six months, ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: if Criterion 1B is met but Criterion 1A is not met for the past six months.

A Décor to Live For: Improved Surroundings =a Healthier You!

A

rguably, besides the workplace, your home is perhaps the place where you spend most of your time in a given day. Many see this place as their getaway, and a representation of themselves. Now, take a quick glance around your home, and ask yourself in what ways can you improve your living surroundings. Oftentimes, interior home design can be for many an arduous task. This is because we strive to create décors that would match our fantasies. Without the help of a decorator or designer, this can be a complex task. However, here are 3 simple options available to even the amateur designer, which can potentially revitalize your décor and work towards improving your health. First, the simple use of bright colors and plants placed within spacious settings are adornments that have been shown to enhance mental health. A second technique can be to replace your existing kitchen utensils with a variety of trays and smaller plate sets, and add a juicer. This can regulate your portions as well as allow your brain to believe that you are actually eating more and signal that you are satisfied as you actually consume smaller portions. Additionally, you can use these smaller plate sets to strategically place healthy snacks around the home.

Treat Yourself – Strategically Place Healthy Snacks Around Your Home

A third and final option could be achieved by getting the most out of your game console. Within recent times, video game system designers, such as the creators of the Nintendo Wii, have aimed to combine gaming fun with exercise. With this advent, game design companies like EA Sports have developed a variety of exercise games that use yoga, high intensity workouts, and classic outdoor games like tennis and volleyball that are aimed at getting your heart pumped while you having fun. In certain cases these can be useful alternatives to the treadmills, dumbbells and exercise balls that are seldom used and generally add to your household clutter and hinder a Feng Shui Way if you will. HAPPY AND HEALTHY DESIGNING

Orthodontics: Orthodontic is the art and science of straightening teeth using simple appliances and tools. Orthodontics was the first recognized specialty of dentistry and it is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusion. There have been many theories and thoughts about orthodontist and orthodontic treatment, some are true and many are not. One of the myths states that orthodontic treatment must involve extraction of teeth in order to straighten out the teeth. This is absolutely not true as the orthodontist tailor the treatment for each patient accordingly. Some cases will require extraction of teeth, while others won’t. Another myth is that orthodontic treatment is only for children and youth. Anyone, regardless of their age, can have orthodontic treatment and have straight teeth as long as their oral health is maintained. Nowadays, with the demand on aesthetic and the so called “Hollywood Smile”, orthodontist can help in organizing and re-arranging teeth for the prosthetic work to be completed and perfected which will produce a better quality of work and a harmonious development of all function. A common myth is that orthodontic treatment must last several years. This statement is obsolete as the orthodontist will determine the time required for him to straighten out the teeth according the the present situation. Some cases might be finished in few months while others might take longer time. If a case is taking an extremely long time, this might be reflecting the ignorance or mismanagement/ misdiagnosis of the case by the treating dentist and/ or if the patient is not cooperating with their dentist. Thus, it is very important to seek orthodontic treatment from a certified orthodontist and not a regular dentist. The orthodontist received a specialized training and educa38

ing teeth and is up to date nologies and research.

Orthodontic appli- ances have went through huge changes and improvements in the last couple decades. The theory of “One size fits all” is not valid anymore and is obsolete. New technology have allowed the use of a smaller size bracket, clear brackets and the invisible braces or the so called “Invisalign”. Invisalign has added so much on the aesthetic proportion of orthodontic. This new 3D virtual technology has allowed the dream to come true by straightening teeth while not having any metal in your mouth. This treatment is specified and custom made for each patient and the clear trays are made to fit the teeth of the specified patient. The new technology has added many advantages to patients who want to have orthodontic treatment, but do not want to shoe metal in their mouth. It has been proven clinically that clear aligners avoid many of the possible side effects of the traditional fixed braces such as inflamed gums, decalcification of teeth, tooth decay. This is true because the clear aligner can be removed and teeth can be cleaned thoroughly. aligners must be removed and taken out before eating and then patient can brush his teeth and out it back again.Furthermore, since this technology incorporates a computerized plan, it will allow the patient to view their projected smile and occlusion prior to start of treatment. Even though the Invisalign treatment is a computerized one, is it very important to choose your orthodontist carefully. The orthodontist must know which cases fit the criteria of invisalign and which ones don’t, so when it comes to orthodontics and Invisalign treatment, experience matters.

It With We love words. Of course we do, and this isn’t only because we’re a magazine but it’s really because words are beautiful. This exciting online business by graphic design graduate Salma Al-Yasseen is a fantastic way to decorate your home or office using short meaningful and catchy phrases. We’re already considering a few designs for the walls of our office at theCITY. We asked the founder of this business Salma Al-Yasseen a couple of questions to find out more about Wall Sticker It! 1- First off we’d like you to introduce yourself to the readers. Name, age, profession, any quirky details about who you are that you’d like to share. My name is Salma Al-Yaseen and I am twenty four years old. I have a baby girl, Ghalya, who is one year old and looks a lot like me. This is my final course at AUK and I will be graduating as a graphic designer in June. I was raised in a home where art was highly appreciated and I was always encouraged to be creative with shapes, colors, and music. I started using Adobe Photoshop when I was 7 years old. My mother used to own a Macintosh back when the apple logo had colors and Adobe Photoshop was on a floppy disk during those days. 2- What is wallstickerit? When did you start the business? Ever since I was a child, I used to day-dream in front of blank walls imagining what it would look like if I added color and certain shapes to it. I always wanted to have a beautiful view out of my window but all I got was dust, bricks, and minimal shades of green. It was really my day-dreams that helped me picture the beautiful view I always wished for. When I was renovating my place, I wanted to add wall paper. I searched the market for unique designs but I couldn’t find anything new. There were pretty designs but I just did not feel the connection. So I decided to design my own wall paper since I already knew how. This was the impetus for sharing my designs and eventually how I started the business. I also collaborate with fellow designers to add variety to my collection. I try to encourage designers to enhance their creativity and spread it all over Kuwait because art is simply a breath of fresh air and everyone needs a piece of that. 3- As a student and business owner, how do you balance between the two responsibilities of school and work? To be honest, I could not do it at first. I very much struggled to balance all

40

my duties, including mothering, working, and studying. I modified my schedule a hundred times. I sacrificed some of my school time and some of my social life. I tried several methods and finally realized that the only time I can truly focus on Wall Sticker it is after midnight. That is when my family and friends are asleep and obviously I have no classes at that time. This time schedule, however, is temporary, and that keeps me going. 4- How do you choose what to write on the stickers? I usually try to make the sentences that have a relation to our culture and traditions. I know that traditional colors and contexts are a trend nowadays and many people use it in different types of businesses, but I encourage them to do that because we should feel confident about our identity and hopefully spread it globally in a positive way. Customers also have the option of customizing their own sentences and shapes. So we design and print based on the customers’ requests as well. Do you plan to open a store in the future, or are you satisfied with the business online? For the time being, keeping the business online is necessary because I need to focus on my studies and eventually graduate. The website is helping me find the time to study and socialize. But the bigger plan is a full team of designers and workers and a showroom for customers to visit. This plan is in progress and you’ll hear about it later this year God willing. How can people get in touch with wallstickerit? The most direct method of communication right now is through our Instagram account, @wallstickerit. Customers can view our collection there and orders can be placed on our website www.wallstickerit.com

Getting The Best Out Of Your Photos

W

e never forget the great moments that we went through with our love ones and friends. On the other hand, we tend to forget what have been captured with our cameras of those moments. It usually get lost amid thousands of unarchived images on your computer or your smartphone. We all know that the last thing amateur photographers think of is archiving, because it›s not a fun task after all! There are many ways to output the images stacked inside your digital boxes (hard disks, backups, DVDs, etc) to make them a part of your home decor. Recalling the traditional way to display your family photos, simply arrange them in a neat photo album after getting rid of that paper or plastic cheap albums you get from your local photo printing service shop for free. Good looking photo albums adorn your bookshelves at home. Also, combining some reminiscent little things or souvenirs with photographs related to a special memory in keepsake frames reacts dynamically to the physical dimension of the images, which enriches the viewing experience. A4 frames, too, can be great for personalised retro style comic page of your sequential photographs you›ve taken of a funny incident. Framing and displaying photographs at home is never limited only to those taken in commercial studios in front of set up or digitalised background. Intimate and spontaneous shots bring happiness and joy to any place and they can reinforce a sense of family warmth. Think about shape and colour coordination of the frames. Moving from the conventional frames, digital frames, although are not a new concept, they›re one of the best solutions for those who do not wish to spend money on costly printing. However, I haven›t found them to be very popular, and I can›t remember that I›ve spotted them at any house I›ve visited except the ones are displayed arbitrarily on their computer screen savers. There is a potential to change this fact. It is a revolution in the world of digital frame design concept. Instacube resembles the form of Instagram application. It displays directly via Wi-Fi your published images on Instagram putting them right on top of your shelf, coffee table or even the surface of your kitchen. Just imagine a big fat Instagram app standing next to your coffee cup! The device is available for pre-order now. For more information, visit www.goinginstacube.com. printing type after uploading your images to their servers. Printed polaroids are a fabulous retro addition for an urban home of office. Flickr, as well as Apple, provides printing services and fantastic template ready coffee table books. Personally, I print my family photo albums using Aperture for Mac. For my daily smartphone shots, I make good quality photo journals using Flickr. For my professional photographic work, I choose blurb. com, a specialised book publishing service that allows you to make your own photographic or illustrated coffee table books. These books have become an integral part of the modern home decor. The ideas are endless when it comes to using your images in home decor. But when it comes to thinking outside books and picture frames, Alsarraf decor company in Kuwait gives you the ability to personalise your wallpapers. Mural tailoring service by their factory in Holland will transform your favourite photograph into a fabulous wallpaper. More information can be found at www.alsarrafdecor.biz. Despite the importance of decorating your home and office in adding your personal touch, identity and creating a positive psychological impact within your place, most people allocate least budget to spend. Meanwhile, the money you invest in photo printing, book making and buying conventional or digital photo frames are not some kind of luxury as it is a way to express gratitude to the fates that made those precious moments and inserted us in their timeframes.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Khadeija Al-Shimmiri @k_alshimmiri @k_alshimmiri

Khadija Al-Shimmiri is a passionate young photogapher. We love her for her enthusiasm and persistence, and admire her taste in photography. For this issue she is introducing us to the photos of Eman Al-Fahad

1

Price – a good place to start when thinking about buying a DSLR is obviously price. DSLRs price range in price from some quite affordable deals at the lower end to extremely high prices at the professional end. Set yourself a budget for your purchase early on but make sure that you keep in mind that you’ll need to consider other costs of owning one including:

2

Will this be a general purpose camera for recording ‘life’? Are you wanting to travel with the camera? Is it for sports photography? Macro Photography? Low Light Photography? Make a realistic list of the type of photography you will use it for (note I said ‘realistic’ – it’s easy to dream of all kinds of things you’ll photograph – but in reality most of us only do half what we think we will).

Lenses (some deals offer ‘kit lenses’ but you should consider upgrading – see below for more on this)

How to Decide Which DSLR Camera is for You?

Batteries (all models will come with one but if you are travelling you might need a spare) Memory Cards (some models come with one but most are inadequate in terms of size. Even if you’re lucky enough to have one included you’ll probably want to upgrade to at least a 1 gigabyte card).

So how do you decide which DSLR to buy? There are an increasing array of them on the market so you have a real choice ahead of you. according to these 5 factors you can choose the best for you :

Camera Bag (some dealers will throw one in – but once again don’t expect a high quality ‘free’ bag. Your DSLR is something worth protecting – invest in a good bag)

5 44

March 2013

What will You use it For? – when you head into a camera store to purchase any type of question the first thing most sales people will ask you what type of photography you want to do. It is well worth asking yourself this question up front as it will help you think through the type of features and accessories you’ll need.

Resolution – ‘how many megapixels does it have’ is a question that is often one of the first to be asked about a new camera. While I think ‘megapixels’ are sometimes over emphasised (more is not always best) it is a question to consider as DSLRs come with a wide range of megapixel ratings. Megapixels come into play as you consider how you’ll use your images.

3

Size – DSLRs are all more sizeable than compact point and shoot cameras but there is a fair bit of variation in size between them also. Some photographers don’t mind carrying around weighty gear but if you’re going to use it for on the go photography (travel) then small and light models can be very handy.

4

Previous Gear - the attractive thing about DSLRs is that in many cases they are compatible with some of the gear you might already have. This is particularly the case for lenses. Don’t assume that all lenses will be compatible , but it’s well worth asking the question as it could save you some money. If you have a point and shoot camera you might also want to look at the type of memory card that it takes as some models of DSLRs could also be compatible with them. This probably won’t be a major consideration as memory cards are considerably cheaper than they used to be but it could be a factor to consider.

The Musical Fountain

Our grandmothers’ idea of a fun day didn’t include standing in long queues and laborious preparations. They just put on a nice dress, prepared a thermos of coffee and a thermos of tea, took a small rug and some snacks and headed to the beautiful outdoors. With the lovely cool breeze and the company of good friends, they had a lovely time and what’s even more fun is that they didn’t spend anything to have this fun. When I think of how simple the idea of fun used to be and how it has come to mean spending so much money these days I really wish we could bring the old days back. So I decided to go on a small picnic and for that I chose a long-forgotten beautiful place, the Musical Fountain. This public park was opened first in 1979, and was the first of its kind in the region. It was later destroyed by in the 1990 war, and was neglected even after the liberation.

I was joined by the supervisor of the park Ms Sarah Al-Juma. We sat down and talked about how this space included so many lovely celebrations and casual outings, and must carry so many memories to a lot of people. Nowadays it is almost forgotten, except for occasional carnivals held around the period of the two Eids and the national celebrations in February. Ms Al-Juma told me that some companies choose to hold outdoor events there for their staff occasionally, and some expatriate nationals hold weddings and receptions there. Such a lovely idea! She gave me some comforting news -- the park will be re-launched sometime around February. It will go through major renovations and will hopefully regain its sparkle. It’s a perfect place to go these days to stay away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Away from computers and traffic, away from the business of life in general. Please go there, I’m sure you will have fun. Pick a day when the weather is nice and just head there with your snacks. If you don’t want to take a rug with you and sit on the floor, there are chairs and tables there. Have fun!

Well my choice on this issue will be complex. This is how I describe this movie or let me say complex is an understatement. I remember when I watched Se7en, it was unpredictable that my head was simmering from the bumps, turns and high speed of the plot. I have to say I enjoyed it with mixed emotions. By the end of the movie, I thought I should make an appointment with a shrink to make sure that all the bolts and nuts in my head are still tight. Needless to say I enjoyed every part of the moment. For that it’s recommended to be watched more than one time. And this is how we know that this movie taste classic

Hello everyone! My name is Essa Al-Ramadahn. I’m a brand, because “fashion knows no luxury.” You could be elegant or stylist and men’s fashion designer. I love fashion! I love how classy in many different ways like wearing light brown pants with

you could express yourself through it in many different ways. In Kuwait, we have a lot of stylish people. They know how to dress, I will give them that much. But to be honest, not always. What I’m seeing here is that Kuwait is a trend follower, so when a new A&F arrives to our market I see everyone is wearing it. I always ask myself why? The answer was simply because they think it’s stylish. I’m not saying it is, but everything has a place to be worn. I believe that anyone could be stylish even if he didn’t own a

a white tee with a green or black coat with a colorful small bag (Channel , Prada , LV or Hermes) and colorful flats. I always tell this quote to everyone “ I don’t do fashion .. I just express my mood and my feelings” .. I believe that every single human being is creative in the way he wears his cloth even he knows how to wear them but not every time .. he/she only need the right ways to do it .. I hope you enjoyed reading my article and stay tuned for more ! there’s a surprise I’ll be doing next month so stay tuned !

Choose Your Colors Carefully Color is the language of fashion. According to the international color authority, ‘ color comes before style and price, and is the first factor to which the customer responds.’ This is especially true for the fashion business, color has become increasingly important in the development, marketing, and sales of apparel. But where these color palettes come from? And why certain colors sell well in a particular season?Professional designers work with color forecasters to develop a seasonal color palette that connects with the wants and the needs of the consumer and give meaning and identity to products. This process of developing a successful color palette requires a lot of thinking that involves scientific research, analysis of cultural trends and consumer behavior, in addition to a healthy dose of inspiration and intuition. In another words, pushing consumers into a cycle of buying new products in order to be on-trend. Imagine if all clothing was the same color, retail venues would be uninspiring, and purchases would be driven only by need. Consumers always look for newness and variety. And to fulfill these expectations designers need to observe and interpret people’s behavior and moods. And translate this information into a color direction that will appeal to consumers’ preference wether it is cultural, social, or psychological . Color is cyclical in nature, and when developing a new season’s color story designers must know what is currently in the market in order to offer a broad variety of fashionable color options to the customers each season. Studies have found that the human eye can see 7000,000 colors. And that people are sensitive to the combination of color properties; hue, value, and chroma, Then coolness and warmth alone. All-black and all-white palette might seem easy, but their uniformity demands a great attention to texture and drape.Further, all blacks don’t match, and all-white palette can be challenging . Gender differences influence color responses too, for example men are more tolerant to achromatic colors that create excessive muscular activity which fatigues the eye.Women respond more positively to the livability and organization factors in colors. In fashion design Primary colors have a limited audience . Why? Because primary colors tend to remain constant but other delicate colors can shift dramatically with light and create visual interest. Effective color palettes for a collection are usually families of color encountered in nature, cosmetics, and industry. Consequently, the appropriate use of color can maximize productivity when the final design is realized .

Truly beautiful ! Those words do not do this part of Italy justice. This jewel in the crown of Italy’s famous lakes is a haven of tranquility, superb cuisine, majestic snow capped mountains, courteous folk and style. In his ‘Charterhouse of Parma’ Stendhal described it as an “enchanting spot, unequaled on earth in its loveliness.” Virgil called it simply “our greatest” lake. Como is in Lombardy, 45km North of Milan and in the Province of Como. Como is at the tip of the southwestern branch of this lake. Como is only a few miles from the Swiss border and 20 minutes from Lugano. Lake Como is 50 km long and west of Menaggio is where the lake splits in two. The mountains around the lake are 2000 m high and the lake up to 1350 feet deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe. When visiting Como, there are places to see and things to do. Like most Italian towns off the beaten track, these are not always obvious. The locals know where to go, but do not make it too obvious to strangers. Although when you arrive you are always welcome. Explore Como at your leisure, relax in the cafe’s, people watch, drink pure Italian coffee, absorb the history and elegance.

PAGE Hello there! I want to share with you what i like to do besides designing clothes. Jadel and I are both interested in art, especially music, and we like learning how to play instruments, we played piano for a couple of years but unfortunately stopped a while ago. Anyways I have been playing guitar for awhile now. The feeling of just running your fingers through these 6 strings to play out a song is simply amazing. I used to have a tutor a while ago that taught me the basics of playing guitar, but for now i’m taking classes with a professional guitar player called Ahmed, he’s so talented and I’m hoping to be like him one day. He once asked me which song i wanted to learn so I played out a song on my ipod that i really like its called “The A team” by Ed Sheeran before the song ended he began playing along with it with his guitar. The best part was that it was his first time listening to the song, and he played it so perfectly! “The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.” – B.B. My Neighbor Totoro

y Neighbor Totoro proves that movies don’t need villains. Movies don’t need bad people. Movies don’t even need to have a major conflict. Movies don’t need to be restricted into the “there’s a problem, now solve it” formula. Granted the formula does work (I use it myself as an amateur screenwriter), but it’s not necessary. It is a tradition broken by Hayao Miyazaki and a damn great film was made because of it. My Neighbor Totoro is one of the greatest animated movies ever to be screened on this earth. The movie revolves around these 2 girls living in a Japanese farm. Those two girls meet a lovable and unbelievably cute bear-like creature called. Totoro introduces them to his world and gives them a tour through a forest near their farm. And that’s the plot. The movie is just 86 minutes of those two girls getting to know this monster and experiencing a slightly bizarre but ultimately beautiful world of his. The character of Totoro is so charming and his world is so wonderful I can’t help but smile and smile and smile while watching the movie. My Neighbor Totoro almost forces this grin upon your face that is impossible to get rid of. I understand that I’ve made the movie sound shallow, but trust me, it’s not. There’s a whole mythos created in the movie about dust creatures living in the forest. There a myth in the world created in the movie and the girls get to see those myths come to life. A great thing that the movies is how it treats the scene where the girls tell their dad about the dust creatures in the forest. In a western movie, the scene would probably include the kids excitedly telling their parents about the creatures, and their parents would dismiss them and call them liars; creating a very forced and slightly annoying conflict we have to sit through. In My Neighbor Totoro, the father of the two kids plain accepts their story. He rather humors their wild imagination and expands on the story of the forest creatures. (It is left vague whether the forest creatures are real or figments if the girls imagination, since nobody sees the creatures but the two girls. But you’ll end up choosing to believe that they’re real). This is an example of how the movie avoids conflict,

62

March 2013

it focuses less on the problems and more on the exploration, making you experience a world in this movie that you will never forget. Now the movie isn’t completely problem-less, the girls’ mother has an unspecified illness that worries the older of the sisters. It provides motivation for the older girl’s angry and tomboyish attitude. But unlike most movies, she’s never angry with her mom; rather she looks at her with great admiration. This movie treats family as comforting shelter from the strange world they discover. The family members in this movie are open-minded and never dismiss or misunderstand the girls in the movie. It is refreshing to see a good family in a movie, the film industry has a bizarre fondness of dysfunctional families and while it is easier to make a dysfunctional family interesting than a normal one, it does get tiresome after a while. While the illness problem does sort of provides a conflict, it fades away and you forget about it once Totoro appears on screen. The character of Totoro is the real meat of the movie. My favorite scene in the movie is the one where the girls wait for their father at a bus stop. The hour grows late, and the father still didn’t arrive. And then Totoro appears, an always-welcome sight. It starts raining, and the girls pull out their umbrellas. Totoro doesn’t have one, so the girls share one with him, in which Totoro reacts with great delight. (He has this huge dorky smile which unbelievably cute). And that’s the whole scene, it’s so beautiful yet so very simple. And I love the way Hayao Miyazaki uses the rain to create a poignant scene rather than a depressing one (Which most movies would’ve done). The movie is wonderfully positive, delightfully whimsical, and you and your family will fall in love with every single minute of it. If you haven’t, I recommend watching the movie in the nearest opportunity you can get. If you haven’t already watched it, you’re missing out on one if the greatest, if not the greatest animated film of all time.

While fleeing blackmailers with his little sister Noaf, Nawaf stepped on a land mine. The explosion shattered a hidden gem, embedding shards of the stone in his skin. Nawaf saved his sister, but the slivers of gemstone that lodged in his body triggered a startling transformation. Suddenly, the gawky teenager was transformed into a man-mountain, a giant standing over two meters tall and weighing almost 200 kilograms. Nawaf has a direct, almost childlike outlook on the world, but his moral sense is very strong, and he sometimes serves as the conscience of the team. He is very good friends with Noora, who joined the team right after him; and with Mumita, who serves as his sparring partner and whom he helped recruit. Jabbar is also the only team member whose Noor Stone is actually embedded in his body, which means he cannot lose it or give it away. One fragment, lodged in his cheek below his eye, resembles a teardrop. Powers: Super-strength, near-invulnerability, and durability. www.thecitym.com

Located in Industrial Ardiya, this car wash station is a perfect blend between modern day technology, consumer needs, and environment sustainability. The owner of the station Mr Adnan Al-Obaid says it currently utilizes solar energy to make 25% of the total energy used in the station. This progressive step was taken by Mr Al-Obaid in order to utilize an ever-flowing source of energy: the sun. He says he certainly hopes in the future to rely solely on the solar power. The car wash station is fully equipped with the latest technology and uses steam rather than water, which saves a lot of water. With steam, the machine uses approximately 3 liters to wash the entire car. The technology used pays a lot of attention to detail, especially since steam manages to polish all surfaces and reach spaces that water cannot normally reach. We at theCITY Magazine are supportive of all progressive ideas and businesses in Kuwait, and we wish to see more businesses take such progressive initiatives.

The Beautiful 2013 Porsche Carrera 4 / 4S

With the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, Porsche rolls out the first four-wheel-drive versions of its new, seventh-generation 911. Porsche claims the previous version of the Carrera 4 accounted for 34 percent of 911 sales worldwide. Compared with the rear-drive Carrera, the rear fenders of the 4 and 4S each flare an extra 0.9 inch, and a 1.4-inch-wider or 1.7-inch-wider rear track (Carrera 4S or Carrera 4, respectively) and slightly wider tires lurk under those zaftig hindquarters. Like a tough game of where’s Waldo, it takes a keen eye to spot the differences between the front end of the 2013 model and the 2012 model. The first thing we notice is that the nose is ever-so-slightly wedged more so than the 2012 model. Porsche also scrapped the all-too-typical boring Porsche front fascia and installed a new one. This new fascia boasts wider side air inlets and a slightly narrower mouth without the two side bars that we had on the 2012 model. Also changed up are the turn signals, as the 2013 model boast harderangled, hockey-stick-style turn signals up front. The mirrors have also moved from being A-pillar mounted to sitting on the top of the door – a trend gaining steam in the auto industry as of late. As you approach the back end of this AWD Porsche, you’re going to find a backside that is slightly more voluptuous than the RWD 911, as there’s an extra 44 mm of cushion to make room for the AWD system and the wider tires. From the rear, you’re going to find the same illuminated taillight bar that was shown off on the 2013 911. You also get one fewer engine cooling louver, making the count three instead of four. Porsche also scrapped the old and fat looking taillights on the 2012 Carrera and replaced them with more triangular and thinner units. As you reach the redesigned integrated rear diffuser, you will also find two large oval exhaust exits, as opposed to the four smaller units found in the previous generation. In all, the redesigned 2013 Carrera 4 and 4S look pretty much as expected, as we have already seen the redesigned 911 and we knew it wouldn’t stray too far from its roots. Still, this is a great job building onto a legend, as opposed to tearing it down and starting over.

March 2013

Interior The interior of the 2013 911 Carrera 4 and 4S is not a big shocker, as it is mostly a carryover from last year, sans several mild changes the Porsche notates and that we see. First is an optional glass sunroof – a new addition for 2012. Next you’re going to find a slight modification to the center dashboard vents, as it looks like all Porsche did was flip the 2012 vents upside down. Now the longer section of the vent bezel is on the top, giving it a grin-look instead of the frown look from 2012. Also swapped up, just by appearance in the press photos, is the center stack. The LCD screen in the stack looks significantly larger than the 2012 model year. The stack also looks much more organized over last year’s model. The center console on the 2013 Carrera comes off of the center stack at much shallower angle, giving it a smoother appearance. Also, the center console extends further rearward than the 2012 model year and you’ll notice that there is no handbrake – we assume it is an electronic unit. Also gained from the interior images, we see that the armrests look far better engineered, with the window control integrated into the it. One final addition that we can make out from the press pictures is the addition of a shoulder line and other accents around the cabin. A silver trim piece runs across the top-third of the door panels and across the face of the dashboard, creating the shoulder line. Throughout other parts of the interior are more silver accents, giving the interior a more luxurious look than the Carrera has ever boasted. There were also some technological changes this year. The biggest addition is a new data screen in the instrument cluster that tells the driver what percentage of the power is going to the front and rear wheels. Optional on this year’s model is adaptive cruise control, which helps speed up and slow down the Carrera while it is in cruise control. When you order the 911 Carrera with Porsche’s famed PDK, you get Porsche Active Safe, which helps you avoid front-end collisions. Porsche hasn’t elaborated on how, as of yet, but it supposedly does help. I love the new interior, hands down. The previous generation was nice and

luxurious, but was a little bit dull. The revisions that Porsche made for this generation add to the existing generation’s strong points and eliminate its low-lights – like the cheap-car-like door panels. Engine I was already aware of the engine selections in the Carrera 4 and 4S. The Carrera 4 will boast a 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-6 and the 4S will boast a 400-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-6. The Carrera 4 will zip to 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 177 mph in coupe form, and 4.5 seconds in cabriolet form with a top speed of 175 mph. The 4S coupe will hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 185 mph, while the drop-top model will take 4.1 ticks to get to 60 and reaches 183 mph. The standard gearbox in the Carrera 4 and 4S for 2013 is a 7-speed manual and they, of course, have the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) 7-speed transmission. If you opt for the manual transmission and the Sport Chrono package, you get an extra special Sport Plus mode this year. This mode actually automatically double declutches for you when it’s in this mode. Essentially, it is just a rev-matching system to maximize power, but it is still cool that you can say “my car double clutches for me.” The gas mileage on the Carrera is actually very decent for the type of car it is. The Carrera 4 gets 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway when equipped with the PDK. The cabriolet Carrera gets 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The 4S model gets 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with the PDK.

Vow: A Memoir of Marriage

Middle C

By Wendy Plump

By William H. Gass

Monogamy is one of the most important vows we make in our marriages. Yet it is a rare spouse who does not face some level of temptation through the allure of other people. Sometimes the issues are resolved before anyone is hurt. But sometimes, as with Wendy Plump’s marriage, the fallout is confronted head-on-when not one but both spouses cheat.

In a book that promises to be one of the literary events of the year, novelist and critic William Gass delivers his first novel in nearly two decades. Middle C centers around Austrian émigré Joseph Skizzen, an amateur pianist, living an outwardly quiet life in middle America. The outward life is offset by a Mittyesque fantasy life in which he meticulously catalogues human cruelty in his role as “director of the Inhumanity Museum.”

Your sympathetic side will be called on early in the month. A loved one needs you to listen and give moral support. Be honest, but caring. Give in to your desires and shower yourself in luxury this month. It’s going to be a hectic one at work, so you deserve to pamper yourself.

While you usually like to be alone, working as a team at work this month will make things so much easier. You’ll share a lot of good ideas and actually make some close friends. Loved ones will rely on you to take care of a family matter. Aquarius is involved.

Let your practical side lead you in your decision making as the month begins. It may seem like a good idea to make an impulsive purchase, but don’t do it. Finances will be tight. A relationship moves into high gear when you realize how much you have in common with that special someone.

Slow down this month, because it will feel as if your entire world is closing in on you. A few days off of work will help you relax and time with loved ones will show you that you’re still in control of your life. Virgo and Sagittarius play important roles
