Your Saboteurs VS. You As the month of December draws to a close, we approach the beginning of a fresh start and a new year. So what if I were to tell you that you have the opportunity to slay evil and make this world a safer place, how does that sound as a way to ring off 2013? So, let’s start with the basics. What is your current relationship with yourself? Are you your worst enemy? Are you continuously involved in self-sabotage? How do you talk to yourself? What actions does your mind tell you to do? For example, when you have a big meeting, does your inner voice support you or does it place you in panic mode? Inside every one of us there are two sets of voices. One set—‘the Saboteurs’—constantly harasses you and tries to destroy you. Saboteurs are your internal enemies. Every person has to deal with their own selfsaboteurs in varying degrees. Even the most successful people on the planet battle their inner saboteurs on a continuous basis. For some people, these psychological saboteurs control their lives and their decisions and, for others, they are more under control. Saboteurs come in varying voices and personalities. All day long, they articulate their negative and destructive point of view. They grow on false beliefs and incorrect assumptions that work against your best interest. With names like the Judge, Controller, Victim, Stickler, and Avoider, their mission is to limit your happiness and success by feeding you negativity and lies about yourself.

You may be thinking, how can I deal with this issue? How do I silence these voices? The great news is that you can significantly reduce the power of these mental foes by following these steps 1. Identify the Saboteurs: The first step is awareness. Start the inner saboteur conquest by understanding how many and the types of saboteurs you actually have within you. Don’t be afraid— take a look inside yourself. Start to monitor the voices you hear and the phrases they are repeating. Name your saboteurs. You may be surprised at all the saboteurs you have within. Saboteurs run around freely inside your head and tell you lies, and expose you to a false perspective. It is best to put a face, a name, and even a voice to each saboteur in order to identify them easier. The better you understand and know your enemies the better equipped you will be in conquering them. 2. Intercept the Saboteurs: Once you have identified the saboteurs, go about your day with an awareness of the saboteur self-talk. When you hear a voice that says, for example, “I am not smart enough,” identify the voice to as your ‘Judge’ saboteur instead of your voice of reason. Once identified, smile and know that it is only a saboteur and move on. Do not take these fabrications as ‘reality’ as they are not, they are only false beliefs. It is to your advantage to control these inner lies. There is no need to analyze the saboteur and why it is visible. Just label it once it pops up and then release it. 3. Change the Focus: Once the saboteur is identified and released, move on and focus on things of greater importance. Focus on the greatness of your life at this current instant. Live in the moment. Feel what is truly happening around you and/or within you. Taste and truly enjoy that piece of candy or the amazing weather. Connect with your life and savor the feeling of being alive! Dearest readers, saboteurs can have serious consequences in our lives. When we allow the negative voices to play a starring role in our lives, the result may become devastating. Identify, intercept, and change the focus whenever any saboteur arrives in your mind’s eye.

The more successful and accomplished we get as individuals the more busy and overcrowded our days may become. We have more appointments; more errands; more travel, and more responsibility than ever before. But with noted success and loyal commitment comes luxurious perks and services that are entirely customized to fit the very needs of those of us who seek organization, peace of mind, and an air of exclusive access and luxury. And, when it comes to exclusivity and unparalleled personal luxury, Kuwait Concierge is unmatched in its service, its personability, and its devotion to making your life easier. We sat down with PR Manager at Kuwait Concierge, Ala’a Al-Jarki to learn more from her on living the high life! @Kuwaitconcierge
www.thecitym.com 15 Photographer: Abdulrhman Al-Yousef
Tell us about yourself and about Kuwait Concierge. My name is Ala’a Al-Jarki. I graduated from Kuwait University with an Accounting degree. When I first joined the workforce I worked in the Ministry of Finance because that was my field of study in university but over time and through my experience helping my family in a small, successful business I realized that I was not meant to work in government. I submitted my resignation to the Ministry of Finance and started working with the private sector at Kuwait Concierge as a PR Manager which, as it turns out, is what I’ve loved doing all along. Who is Kuwait Concierge? Kuwait Concierge is a Kuwait based company established early 2011 and which provides Concierge Services. Through our exclusive partners we provide concierge services such as a 24/7 personal assstant, access to VIP lounges at airports, a Shop & Ship account (MyBox), valet parking, and messenger services. Who needs your services? Kuwait Concierge is a great option for individuals who are successful and lead busy, hectic lives. The personal assistants we provide are professionally trained to help organize and maintain all the responsibilites of our esteemed individuals. We are also the perfect
16 www.thecitym.com
choice for any corporate entity that wants to reward their loyal clients and employees. What are these companies’ benefits? The company will basically empower their brand as it will be circulated and used at over 100 lounges all over the world. The relationship between the customer and the company itself will change to more a intimate, personal relationship as opposed to just a mere business relationship. This collaboration will result in loyalty and strong references. Can you please elaborate more about how this empowering point can change the relationship in this way? Our major sectors are the banks which have their own cards and the sectors such as telecom, automotive, airlines, and investment companies which do not have their own cards as a product. The role of Kuwait Concierge is to create a card branded by the company and make a real physical use for this card, which the customers need to carry with them at all times and use them to access VIP lounges or at any of our valet locations. This includes any other service the company wishes to add into the card like priority at their branches and other exclusive perks. As far as the relationship part is concerned, the relationship between customers and busi-
nesses has always been very formal, whereas if Kuwait Concierge is involved and brought in to be the company’s concierge provider and the customer’s personal assistant we will help improve the customer’s personal lifestyle in such way that they relate this great service and luxurious treatment with the company and the corporate brand itself. What are the customer benefits? The customers will have peace of mind. They will never worry about running errands and will always have a personal assistant on-call and ready to organize their life. It will give the customers the time and space they need in their life to focus on their work, on themselves, and the things that really matter to them. So what about individuals, do you have any services to offer them? Yes we have our Kuwait Concierge membership cards starting at three categories: VIP, Black, and Diamond. An individual may ask for a card and apply for the service then they will go through a process of approval, upon the completion of which they will have access to our exclusive services and accessibility. What is included in these memberships? We include a number of options and luxurious accessibilities that make life infinitely easier
for those of us who wish to have peace of mind and lead hassle-free lifestyles. So that includes a 24 hour personal assistant, access to VIP lounges at airports (plus guest), a Shop & Ship account (MyBox), valet parking, and messenger services. Are you expanding outside Kuwait? We have already established our first extension in the Kingdom of Bahrain this last June under the name Bahrain Concierge and we are exploring the region at the moment. How has Kuwait Concierge changed the concept of the term concierge and given it new meaning in the Gulf? Traditionally, international companies provided concierge services for their VIP clients who are on TOP VIP and advisory levels. These companies usually just check some info and book or register for their clients, the extent of which usually does not exceed travel related services. While Kuwait Concierge started covering the day to day needs of the clients and individuals that companies value most as a show of real appreciation and luxury. Kuwait Concierge provides this wide array of services with a local flavor yet still covering all the glossy, international needs and requirements such as travel and booking services.

Plugged In: Tuned Out Social media should be utilized to strengthen weak ties rather than weaken strong ones... A few years back, people used mobile phones primarily for calling and/or texting one recipient at a time, and computers for accessing the internet (via connecting cables to a landline phone). However, technological advances have embedded wireless internet connection through mobile phones, thus mobiles now perform their function and that of a computer as well. With this innovation, internet users have unlimited access everywhere and anywhere. In today’s technology-driven world, the number, types, and usage of social media are continuously increasing at a rapid rate. Given that many people can easily access the internet, the emergence of social media is perceived as an opportunity to eliminate communication barriers on a local and global level. Not only that, but it’s a cost-effective and one-to-many communication method. As a result, online communities have emerged. Nonethless, excessive social media engagement may lead to adverse consequences on one’s online as well as offline relationships. Thus, solving one problem may lead to another one. Social media addiction has dramatically reduced face-to-face interactions, played a central role in one’s daily life, ceased many offline relations, and took over real-life connections.
18 www.thecitym.com
Effect on Face-to-Face Interactions Do people regularly meet face-to-face as often as they did back in the day? The biggest mistake is to consider social media as an alternative to face-to-face communication. Reality proves that many people actually rely heavily on social media for direct and indirect communication. Face-to-face interactions are limited to once or twice a month (if not less!) because many applications have enabled real-time connections. This may expose users to serious health risks which are associated with irregular face-to-face contact and addiction to a virtual world of relations. Obviously, when it comes to important issues, the use of social media doesn’t seem practical. It’s difficult to settle a dispute or discuss an important matter through servers and networks which may breakdown at any moment. Also, face-toface communication provides some features that aren’t available in the virtual world. This includes physical proximity, which helps depict verbal and nonverbal cues. Not to forget, delivering a message is faster and feedback is instant... there’s no hanging up, ignoring, or suddenly disappearing! Impact on Daily Life Don’t you frequently find yourself sharing and browsing through content? It is a waste of time and the main reason that prevents people from performing otherwise more useful activities. Often, people disregard
others in a gathering or party because of social media addiction. Even worse, some do not pay attention in lectures or meetings due to having the urge to post something or browse through the latest updates. The problem is that individuals are considering social media as a central part of living (perhaps more important than oxygen!). This has led to reduced work productivity, lack of a social life, and even sleep deprivation. Also, social networking sites are increasingly causing isolation of people. Groups of people tend to be physically but not mentally together. How exciting is it to plan a dinner with friends just to sit there gazing at your mobiles? – We’ve all been there... Affects on Offline Relationships Do you think that your online friends are your “real” friends? The problem is that most users of social media are mixing up between their real friends (who may be 3-5) and their online friends (200+). Most users of social networking sites join this community to feel popular; they add the maximum number of friends in order to appear loved by many. But are these people “really” their “friends”? Are they the people they want to share personal information with? Users of social media aren't differentiating between what should remain private, and what can be shared publicly. In the age of social networking, public and private lives are hardly distinguished. At the beginning, having an ac-
count and sharing content seems nice, until the dark side of blackmailing, work threats for certain posts, and personal relationship problems with spouse/family members appear. It is therefore vital to control what is shared, and avoid being too self-centered. Online social relationship problems may occur due to different interpretations of shared content. A study found that “76 percent of respondents have witnessed an argument on social media” and “1 in 5 reduced in-person contact with someone over a cyber fight”. This indicates that sometimes online misunderstanding/conflicts result in an end to offline relationships. Privacy options can help users limit their shared content to family/friends, instead of the general public. This can help prevent the building of wrong impressions in the minds of others (outsiders with different mind sets). However, sometimes, even friends have different perceptions of what constitutes good or bad content to be displayed- thus conflicts arise. Taking Over Real-Life Connections Have you ever experienced changes in the way you connect with society as well as your beliefs and behaviors? Social media has created an online community that is slowly taking over and dominating one’s life. Sometimes people forget to enjoy the moment because they are too busy updating their status, sharing a photo, recording a video, and the like. Also, it seems that some people perform certain activities, go to certain places, or eat certain food not because they want to, but rather for sharing on social media and creating impressions of having an interesting and busy life- which actually contradicts reality. It’s obvious that online connections enhance relationships, but one should not forget about his/her offline social life. A word to the wise: Social media should be used, not abused. More and more people are becoming active users of social media because of the convenient alternatives available. Nonetheless, it’s not always certain that social relationships are enhanced or maintained through social media engagement. Adverse consequences come into play when users do not control the time spent and the content shared over such sites. Thus time management is critically important when it comes to social media engagement. Excessive use may lead to undesired online as well as offline relationship related consequences. People should realize that sometimes offline connections are necessary, and increased reliance on online means can be problematic.

I’m not talking about your breakfast preference – but we all have our favorites when it comes to food, or clothes. On the other hand, when it comes to thoughts, I like to keep my notions away from the fryer and the trends. Sunny Side Up isn’t how you like your eggs; it’s a matter of perspective. Sunny Side Up is your monthly dose of inspiration, and a pacifist’s call for social change.

Our thoughts are just like the sun: they are fiery, powerful energies that can be used for good, to radiate warmth, vibrancy, and bring light to the world. That very same fiery energy of the sun, however, can also easily get out of control and burn all those who cross it’s path. These are powers and abilities that we all have within us. The point is to use that spark of light and thought to remain hopeful and keep our dreams alive. Because here’s the thing: we all go through hard times. We all face difficulties. We all encounter moments of defeat and desperation. But none of that is a reason to lose hope in ourselves or in our surroundings because the truth is that in every encounter, no matter how difficult and painful, there is value. There’s a lesson to learn from every person you meet. There’s a memory to gain from every place you visit. There’s a message behind every little event
22 www.thecitym.com
that happens to you. Every experience you have is meant to shape you into the person you’re meant to become. We’re all meant to contribute to the people around us, our society, and the well being of this planet. But before you can do any of that, you have to be able to see the good in it; see the opportunity in every situation we face, see the beauty in the people and environment that surround us, and see the potential that Kuwait as a country has. What differentiates us from one another is our ability to change our perspective about life towards the situations we’re put in. This idea of perspective brings me to a familiar metaphor which I’m sure you’ve all heard before at one point or another. We repeatedly get asked about the infamous glass—whether it’s half empty or half full. Wake up call! The glass isn’t half empty. And it’s not half full either. It’s completely full!
Half with the water you can see, and the other half with oxygen you can’t see. Let go of the cliché that the glass has to resemble a cup. Let go of the expectation that what’s inside it has to be water, or liquid. That same glass we repeatedly get asked about can have any shape, or color you can imagine for all that matters. Let go of all the preconceived notions of what you have and don’t have; what is good and what is bad; what is full and what is empty. It’s all in your head and it’s all relative to you and your perspective. The only limitation to what you see depends on you and your perspective. When it comes to your thoughts, don’t even bother to think outside the box. Think like there is no box.
@SunshineKuwait
To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person I meet. To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect the only best.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to be greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature I meet.
To give so much time to improving myself that I have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the world is on my side,
so long as I am true to the best that is in me. ― Christian D. Larson, Your Forces and How to Use Them

A conversation with VIVA VVIP Director, Khaled Al-Jasser 24 www.thecitym.com
www.thecitym.com 25 Photographer: Hussain Shamou
My journey with VIVA can be best described as a "Story of Success." Beyond a simple title, how would you describe what you do at VIVA? In my capacity as Director of the VVIP Department, also known as Al-Diwan, I oversee and manage the day to day operations in the department where our main responsibility is providing the best possible services to our clients. We have a well-trained specialized team who help design tailor made offers and services to our clients in order to ensure that they are continuously satisfied with our services. Tell us about your experience as VVIP Director at VIVA. How does it help enhance both your career and the experience of the VIVA client? I began my career with VIVA on the 26th of October 2008, when the company was still in the process of establishing itself in the market, and I saw it as a step forward in this new and promising company. My personal growth within the company was guided by my supervisors and managers, and throughout my time with VIVA I received ample training to up-skill my work and strengthen my performance. I can confidently say that after five years of working at VIVA, it has been a great honor working with a highly skilled team of professionals and look forward to more positive years with VIVA. In summary, I can say that my journey with VIVA can be best described as a "Story of Success." What does it take for a client to become a VIP at VIVA? VIVA considers all of its clients as VIPs
26 www.thecitym.com
as soon as they join the VIVA family. AlDiwan is a specialized department for the Senior Officials of the State of Kuwait, and was specifically designed to cater for The Royal Family, Ministers, Members of the parliament, Businessmen and Celebrities. To become part of the VIVA Family, a client simply needs to get a data line or a voice chip and immediately become part of our growing family. Is VIVA's VIP service only for valued clients or employees as well? The VVIP services are limited to the previously mentioned category of clients. Al-Diwan’s main purpose is to provide the highest quality of services with the strictest of confidence and complete privacy for its high end clients. Tell us about the special VIP services that VIVA offers? VIVA’s ‘Al-Diwan’ offers a wide range of unique services over and above the basic data and voice services. Our concierge service include: phone secretarial service, travel arrangements, online shopping, courier services, car registration, a 24/7 call center which is always ready and prepared to assist our clients with any request. In addition, VIVA’s Concierge service enables our clients to access a large list of VIP Airport lounges around the world, a first for any telecom in the region to offer this service to its select customers. We found that many of our ‘Al Diwan’ clients enjoy the luxury of First Class Lounge access at many airports, and
this is just one of the many services we have to offer them. What makes VIVA's VIP services different and unique? Ever since VIVA’s establishment, we focused on our clients and how to better service them in this highly competitive market. We carefully listened to and analyzed what they really needed from the telecom market, and started providing them with the services they desired to have. In 2012, VIVA had partnered with Kuwait Concierge, one of the leading local concierge companies and Contact Centre outsourcing services and is designed to provide assistance in managing the clients’ daily tasks on a personal level. We will continue to provide the highest level of quality and personal assistance to our valued VIP clients. Why is VIVA a special place to be? There are so many attributes that make VIVA a special place to work, especially for me. As I have already mentioned, VIVA has been my home for the past five years, a company where I have grown and learnt a lot over the course of those years. Throughout my time here, I have learnt from my mistakes, I have excelled in my field and made quite a few friends along the way. I could not have done any of these things without the support of my managers and supervisors who assisted me as I progressed and helped me and several of my colleagues establish ourselves within the company.

Nashl, a striking dress from old Kuwait Back in the old days, when attending a special event, women would get their favorite special dresses for the occasion. This often meant a special dress made by hand in Bahrain called “nashl”. Bahrain is still famous in producing these dresses, made by hand with glittering threads to add to its beauty. Women often wore this dress over another plain-colored dress, often choosing solid colors like purple, red, orange, or blue. On the occasion of the Henna night, the night before a wedding, women often choose the color green. Henna night or yalwah, for those who don’t know, is the night before the wedding where the bride invites her family and close friends and they sing songs about her beauty and songs that wish her a happy marriage, all while she is getting her hand, arms and feet hennaed. Traditionally, only married women wore this dress on happy occasions. Unwed girls wore other less traditional dresses that are less colorful and less fancy. This isn’t the case anymore, though. That is partly because many girls can afford these dresses nowadays, and girls no longer get married at a very young age. I’ve noticed that the trend of wearing these traditional dresses has returned, and many people wear them especially during Ramadan ghabgas and Henna nights — which are also witnessing a revival these days. When looking for a place to do the photo shoot for this piece, I was offered to use Bait Al-Othman, a traditional Kuwaiti house in Hawally that belonged to Al-Othman family and is now a beautiful museum worth a visit.

What does self-advocacy mean to you? Self-advocacy to me means having the skills and the opportunity to express both our voice and our choice. It means being able to speak up for ourselves and being able to express our choices about what is important to us. For many persons with disabilities, our ability and the opportunity to speak up for ourselves has been limited by misperceptions and low expectations. Why is it important? Self-advocacy is important because it provides the most appropriate means for the person with a disability to personally share their preferences and to express what is important to them. The person with a disability knows best what they like, what they don't like, what they are interested in and what their hopes and dreams for the future are. The disability community uses the mantra 'Nothing about us without us' to capture the importance of self-advocacy. What is your personal and professional involvement in providing self-advocacy for the disabled? I am a woman that was born with a facial disability that is readily apparent to people that meet me. Because of that, I have personally and professionally experienced times when I needed to advocate for myself. Early in my career, I was denied placement as a student teacher because of the misperception that the way I looked would frighten the small children I would be teaching. I had to challenge that misperception and demonstrate that I could be
32 www.thecitym.com
successful and that in fact small children really responded very well to me. I am a warm, caring person and children sense that. In my career, I have been committed to leadership development programs that assist young adults as they embark on their careers. I have served as a role model, a mentor and a coach in helping persons with disabilities learn selfadvocacy skills that they can use in the classroom, in the workplace and in the community. Through Mobility International USA (MIUSA), I have seen the transformation that happens when persons with disabilities participate in international exchange programs and learn leadership skills. They develop self-confidence and are better able to return to their home countries and work to create the change that is possible through advocacy. Two years ago, my husband experienced a serious injury that changed our lives. He needed to quit his job and it ended the career that he loved. I have been able to help him learn self-advocacy skills that assist him in working through the challenges he experiences every day. It is important to understand and embrace that disability is a part of the human experience. You never know at what point in your life you may need to develop and use self-advocacy skills. How can we move beyond 'political correctness' to authentic connection when it comes to discussing the rights and needs of persons with disabilities? I believe that we need to put aside our fears and learn to both speak and listen from our
hearts. We need to be respectful and treat persons with disabilities with dignity. We need to understand and embrace that disability rights are human rights. Regardless of our best intentions, we often make assumptions about what the person with a disability needs or wants; and our assumptions can be wrong. It's important that we first ask the person with a disability and then respect their voice and their choice. How can we train and prepare employers to create a more accommodating work environment for workers with disabilities? Employers learn best and are more responsive when they have a chance to hear from other employers ways to be more successful in accommodating workers with disabilities. Public and private sector businesses want workers that are productive and that allow the business to be more successful. We need to seek to understand the needs of business and provide opportunities for employers to share both their successes as well as possible concerns about accommodating persons with disabilities. We need to encourage employers to seek advice from their current employees on ways to create a more accommodating work environment that can benefit everyone. It is important to find ways to recognize and acknowledge employers that are exemplary in accommodating workers with disabilities. What are some of the most prevalent misconceptions surrounding workers with disabilities in the workplace? We know that often the most significant barrier
The disability community uses the mantra 'Nothing about us without us' to capture the importance of self-advocacy.
to overcome is that of the attitudes of people regarding workers with disabilities in the workplace. Some of the most prevalent misconceptions include having low expectations of the abilities and not appreciating the value that workers with disabilities bring to the workplace. Many businesses are surprised at the low average cost of most workplace accommodations. There is often a lack of awareness of the creativity and unique problem-solving skills that workers with disabilities bring to the workplace. There may be a fear of possible negative reaction by customers to workers with a disability. Yet what we know is that customers will often choose to bring their business to places that employ workers with disabilities. What have you found to be the most encouraging changes and the most discouraging lack of change in employment in the US and abroad? One of the most encouraging changes that I have seen has been the active role of business in serving as leaders and champions. There are many examples now in the US and abroad of business leaders that are speaking up about the value and importance of hiring persons with disabilities. They are serving as role models and mentors to their peers. They are creating internships and work experience opportunities for youth with disabilities because they see it as an investment and an untapped resource to meet their workplace needs of the future. The most discouraging lack of change is that the pace is still far too slow. We have too many
young, talented people with disabilities that have no opportunity to gain the skills, the confidence and the access to employment. We have older workers that experience adult onset of disability and are told they can no longer work. When in fact, with technology and accommodations, many of those workers could continue to work and contribute. What needs to be done to involve more persons with disabilities in advocating for themselves? First, we need to acknowledge the good work that is already being done and build on that foundation. We need to recognize and encourage the organizations that are working together to involve more persons with disabilities in advocating for themselves. We need to seek out the future leaders from the disability community. We need to help build strong networks of persons with disabilities that can become self-advocacy leaders. We need to provide more opportunities for persons with disabilities to learn and practice self-advocacy skills. We need to promote safe opportunities for persons with disabilities to identify issues of importance to them and to succeed in breaking the barriers that currently exist. Any suggestions on where to start for those of us contemplating a career in disability rights? First, welcome to a global community of disability rights activists. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a
powerful catalyst for achieving change in our lifetime. This is an exciting time to be thinking about a career in disability rights. To get started, I would recommend connecting with colleagues right here in Kuwait. There are individuals and organizations throughout your community that are committed to improving the lives of persons with disabilities. Find a mentor (or offer to be a mentor) to develop the skills needed to pursue a career in disability rights. Get to know the currents laws in Kuwait and develop an understanding of what can be improved. Get to know the principles underlying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and identify what improvements may be possible here in Kuwait and across the region. Don't be afraid to dream, to imagine and then to create a career path in disability rights. Disability rights and advocacy is a team sport; it's important that you help create a community of partners that can work together to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. There are many resources available online to help you get started. One of my favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.

Budgeting Luxury One question that is frequently asked of me is ‘How can I give my house an expensive feel on a limited budget?’ Well, I am happy to report that there are ways to overcome it! You can absolutely make your room look richer and more luxurious without shilling out a complete fortune. With few well-calculated moves you can get the desired effect of opulent luxury without burning a hole in your pocket. Here are a couple of my favorite methods to add a touch of upper-crust class to your space in a suitable, budget-friendly way: Crown Molding: A space that lacks crown molding tends to looks very plain while a decorative trim that lines the area where the ceiling and wall meets usually adds an immediate richness to the space. The addition of a crown molding to your home’s interior is a tasteful way to add visual interest to your walls and surrounding your rooms as well as aesthetic value. The wider the trim, the higher the visual impact. Flooring: A wooden flooring always elevates the look of any space and gives it a truly refined, well-polished feel. Neither carpets nor any other flooring material feels quite as rich and beautiful as a wooden flooring does. Wall to wall carpet is sure to feel smooth and warm underfoot, but on the other hand hardwood floors never fail to provide a classic appeal like no other choice of flooring. Hardwood comes in many types of wood and in many shades. I ad-
34 www.thecitym.com
vise opting for dark wood as that will add deeper richness to the room because dark hues are usually associated with warm, rich emotions. You can throw on an area rug on the hardwood to tie the design elements together. This is perhaps the most costly of the budget-friendly methods but the final look of unabashed decadence is well worth the pretty penny! Soft Finishes: Throw pillows are always a fabulous accessory for your sofa, loveseat, or oversized chair. Although, for maximum effect, the pillows need to be over stuffed. Texture and pattern are great enhancers to any room; it can create dimension, add interest or contrast, and the result is a more upscale and luxurious feel: • Add a grass-cloth (natural fibers woven together) wall covering above or below a chair rail or behind an open-back bookshelf. This provides a natural and eco-friendly way to add texture to a wall. • Reupholster an accent chair in a richly woven fabric to add interest and depth. • Textured wallpaper on the headboard wall in your bedroom can be an effective way to add richness and easily enhance the warmth of the room. • Replace tired old pillows with greatly textured or patterned ones. However, it is important to note that too much of texture and pattern will start to look chaotic and out of place in a room. Being selective and keeping a balance in mind will give you a look that is both stylish and sophisticated as opposed to messy and overwrought. Paint: The toughest yet the most vital decision is the color selection of your rooms. Picking either crisp white or high pigment paint in a neutral hue will lend an air of sophistication and affluence to the room. Such a selection also allows for rotation of accent colors. The use of deep, rich colors as accents can enrich the mood in any room and instantly classes the space up. Jewel tones like navy, garnet, jade and amber can add luxury when applied in just the right proportions—just enough to accent the space not overwhelm it. Another simple trick is to paint interior doors black, which instantly transforms the ambience, but don't
forget to add a few other black accents to the room so that the doors tie in with your décor. This method is a definite stunner. Accessories: Gold is synonymous with wealth but at times the color can be hard on the eyes and so it’s luxurious quality becomes a little underwhelming. Silver, chrome, and brushed nickel are easier tones on the eyes and offer a truly polished look. Metallic finishes in accessories and furniture can give your home a more opulent look. Try one of these for the desired effect: • Metallic-framed paintings & a collection of mercury glass accessories. • A table frame, lamp base, or accessory can be highlighted with a shiny or brushed metallic finish. • A mirrored-front accent chest can add depth and interest as well as luxury to any room Lighting: One way to effectively utilize this effect is to change the light switches of the space, especially the dinning chandeliers, sconces, or the other general lighting to a dimmable version. If you can control the lighting you can set the tone for any given function and make the room feel richer, more romantic, and luxurious when you need to. You can also toss out the nondescript chandeliers and ceiling fans and replace them with a unique designer furniture piece. Or, for a quicker, cheaper fix, add a table lamp or a floor lamp to get that desired effect on the space. Lighting can generate this expensive feel easily and without having to spend very much at all. Timelessly luxurious design can be contemporary, modern, traditional, casual, or eclectic, but what makes it distinct is the choice in quality detailing and thoughtful choices. Luxury is conveyed with consistency and clarity in the design. This is why the term luxury has been synonymous with Interior Design from the very beginning. ‘Luxury’ can be defined as a state of great comfort and living without constraint. Luxury can be intangible, as in a sensibility that appreciates complex aesthetic qualities. With a discerning eye, an exquisite home can be easily fashioned with well-positioned furniture and decor with a rich color scheme and a modest budget.

Natural, Spectacular Smiles Veneers and Lumineers in general are both very thin, tough shells designed to bond to the front of the tooth. They are usually made of porcelain and are extremely durable, stain resistant, natural-looking and easy to take care of. They require few visit to the dentist and you can be on your way with a natural, spectacular smile. For a dental procedure such as porcelain veneers or lumineers, you have to get it done right the first time. Getting all the work just right involves determination, details and the trained careful eye of an expert cosmetic dentist.
dentist will send the mold to a special Lab for your custom made Lumineers to be created. In this stage while you waiting for the Lumineers to be created, you don’t have to wear temporaries because no tooth structure have been removed or contoured. When your dentist receives your custom Lumineers, they are checked for fit and shade. Then during your second visit, your Lumineers are cemented using a strong dental cement for bonding. Lumineers are completely reversible because there’s no prep down of tooth structure unlike traditional veneers.
Lumineers is a brand name of a different kind of veneer made of a patented porcelain material that is very tough and hard-wearing. For this reason, Lumineers are made very thin, almost as thin as a contact lens, the advantage to a traditional veneer is that very little, if any of the natural tooth has to be prepared in order to place them on the teeth. In reality, if you do not remove any tooth structure before cementing a thin shell of porcelain over the teeth, they will make the teeth thicker as they will "stick out" a bit. Lumineers cost about 75% to 100% more of the cost of traditional veneers. It requires two visits to the dentist. On the first visit, your dentist will create a precise mold. Then you and your dentist will determine the shade of your new white teeth that is right for you. After your first visit, your
Traditional veneers are also made of porcelain but tend to be a bit thicker (0.5 mm). Because of this reasons, some of your teeth structure have to be removed in order to prevent the veneer from "sticking out" once cemented. To prepare a tooth for a veneer you need two visits to you dentist. The first step your dentist will remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, which is an amount nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface. Before trimming off the enamel, you and your dentist will decide the need for a local anesthetic to numb the area. Next, your dentist will make a model or impression of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which in turn constructs your veneer. It usually takes 1 weeks for your dentist to receive the veneers back from
36 www.thecitym.com
the laboratory. You final step will be cementation of the veneers. The same cements for Lumineers is also used to bond the veneer to your teeth structure. Once correctly position on the tooth, your dentist will apply a light beam to the dental veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden or cure very quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating your bite and making any final adjustments to the veneers as needed. Veneers and Lumineers cover only the front of your teeth, can repair minor tooth shaping and imperfection, straighten, lengthen and whiten your teeth color. Now which way should you go for your teeth and what is suitable in your case? Consultation with your Dentist is important to determine if you are a candidate for veneers or Lumineers. But generally speaking if you are considering remodeling your smile because you are unhappy with the shape and position of your teeth then traditional veneers is your choice because it involves areas on the veneer that are thicker and wider in some areas than others, a trick you cannot accomplish with contact lens thick Lumineers. If you just want to change the color of your teeth with minor correction then lumineers might be just right for you.

taken into consideration before starting their spa experience. This requires well trained professional staff able to assess and advise guests. What is the range of experiences and treatments to be found in Talise Spa? Talise provides guests with different journeys, connecting the east and the west. The treatments incorporate new trends in the spa business alongside more traditional treatments. Specialized treatments include mother-to-be massages, bridal journeys and treatments, and Middle Eastern experiences such as Dead Sea Salt Scrub, Traditional Hammam, and Dead Sea Mud Wrap. Our therapists advise their guests on all the options in the extensive spa menu of over 60 treatments, so as to select the most effective and suitable rituals. How does your team of massage therapists and spa staff distinguish itself? The Spa therapists have four different components that make them stand out; first, they are fully certified practitioners in massage, facials, anatomy and physiology; second, we focus strongly on training and have in-house trainers at the Spa. Training is given to both those who are involved in treatment and those in
customer services every three months. We also conduct refresher courses with the product houses that provide our professional and retail products; third, all Spa team members (reception, attendants, therapists, and management) undergo training in energy healing, yoga, Reiki and meditation, so that they exude positive energy that can be felt by our guests throughout the Spa. Finally, the fourth element is their dedication and professionalism in providing exceptional and luxury treatments. Is there a specific atmosphere or ambiance you aim to achieve for your customers? When they enter the Spa, guests should immediately feel calmer and a sense of tranquillity. Their cares and any worries should be left behind as they prepare to let go and be pampered. As they undergo their treatments, they should feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Every visit will feel special and our therapists will ensure that guests unwind totally. The ambiance should at all times promote a feeling of comfort, security, and calmness whilst also adding a touch of luxury and exclusivity. In your opinion, what are the elements that make for a great spa experience? The great spa experience is where we manage
to satisfy all five senses. On arrival at Talise, guests’ sense of smell will be awakened by the comforting aromas of the essential oil burner. Then, as the guests look around, their eyes will take in the soothing and calm decor of their surroundings. The third sense, hearing, will pick up the gentle sound of the Spa waterfall and soft background music. Talise reception team will welcome guests with a warm towel infused with essential oils to stimulate the sense of touch combined with the sense of smell. A welcome drink which will stimulate the sense of taste will complete the initial journey of the senses and prepare the guest for an even more intense experience during their treatments. At the end of their spa journey, not only will all their senses have been awakened, but their bodies and minds will feel rejuvenated and they will feel completely relaxed. This end result is very important for a healthy mind and body.

Fried Beetroot with Cheese I liked the idea of the fried beetroot as a concept. It was nice and moist which was a pleasant surprise because I was expecting it to be quite dry. Plus the color was very good and inviting.
Beetroot Salad Layers I’m a very big fan of salads so this one definitely got my attention on first sight. The combination was very well played out. It was tasty and despite the different ingredients, nothing overwhelming anything else.
Shrimp on Skewers To be honest, this one was a let-down. The shrimps were over-cooked, chewy, and dry. I would have much rather have had a dipping sauce with it so as to compliment the flavor a bit more. It would have also been a better idea if they presented it as a whole rather than on a skewer.
The Cherry Tomato Tabouleh I loved how they reinterpreted this classic dish and made it into cherry tomato. The balance between the salty and sour flavors was very on point and gave it just the right amount of zing. It was one of those dishes I kept on returning to.
Mexican Fried Corn and Vegetables I don't know why but, when I tried this piece out, it was quite cold. Taste-wise i wouldn't recommend it just because it used a lot of the similar spices of an Indian dish called ‘Bakora’ so it seemed kind of uninspired. This would also have done much better had it been accompanied by some dipping sauce. Fried Cheese It was pretty much this: fried cheese in bite size. When I first saw it I thought it was just another regular piece of fried cheese however I have to admit that I was quiet bowled over. Good texture and the taste was not too overwhelming as it is with most cheese selections. A very recommended choice indeed.
46 www.thecitym.com
Cucumber Roll with Cheese Again this was a very different, cool way of combining the cheese and the cucumber in a way that I had never seen done before. As with many of their other dishes, the balance was right on the money. Chicken Canal Roll Let me say it right off the bat: cold chicken is definitely not my cup of tea. I’d rather have it hot on any day as opposed to cold. This could have been saved if they just added some raspberry jam or some sweet garnish to bring more flavors out and cover the bland coldness. Open Faced Sandwich To be honest, there was no wow factor there. Very plain and uninspired.
The Dessert Cheese Cake I loved the idea of a small, dainty cake that packs a sweet punch! Very classy and strong. Um Ali Loved it unconditionally. So good it was almost unbelievable. All the ingredients stood out in their own right and no element was overpowered by another. I could honestly eat an entire bowl of this Um Ali. Chocolate Trio It was good but I couldn't figure out the mysterious ‘trio.’ This might be a good thing as it adds some rich texture and mystery to the dish. Mango Macaroon Very simple and over-sweetened. Not much else going on here. Skewers of Seasonal Fruits A very classy, elegant idea with a simple yet effective execution. You can’t go wrong with fruits covered in chocolate, can you? French Assorted Pastries I have some very mixed thoughts about these. Some were overwhelming, some where bland, and others were knock-outs. It’s a matter of luck more than anything else when picking one of these.

Can you tell us more about gastronomy dining and what got you so interested in it? I usually don’t get inspired by things that I can do myself at home or things that I can find everywhere I go. So, things like a cool pasta with a zesty sauce, for example, don’t do it for me. It seems too ordinary—and gastronomy dining is anything but ordinary. Gastronomy dining is a relatively new and exciting kind of cuisine that has gotten a little more popular over the last few years. In a nutshell, gastronomy dining is food that is prepared in such a way that it is manipulated scientifically to give outrageously delicious flavors and textures to the food that have never ever been tasted or produced before. The entire process and outcome is dictated by the place in which the food and the hands who make it originate from. It is cultural and scientific at the same time. It is a kind of cooking that takes real responsibility, real intellect, and real art. That’s why, for most gastronomy restaurants, the waiting list for reservations can take up to six months because perfecting the process and the experience as a whole and in all it’s forms can be time-consuming and very delicate. To me, it’s not just about experiencing food that tastes good. It is about experiencing innovation and things that I never thought my taste buds were capable of. It is experiencing the history and the culture of every particular city in a way that is so raw and palpable.

What is the difference between a foodie and a gastronomy diner? I’m not quite sure because the term ‘foodie’ seems like such a broad term. It can compensate many different kinds of eaters and diners, which may include gastronomy dining among other cuisines. I get the sense that a ‘foodie’ just wants to taste really good food, which is fine and it’s a nice goal to have. Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that a gastronomy diner, however, wants something way more than that. Gastronomy dinning is an investment and a desire to challenge yourself when it comes to eating and when it comes to experiencing innovation and different cultures. So, for a gastronomy diner, the ‘goodness’ or the tastiness of the food is perhaps not as important as taking in the whole rollercoaster ride of trying, for example, a dish that has 3 or 4 different flavors at once or a dish that is both hot and cold at the same time. Or even a dish that incorporates ingredients that you never even considered as cooking ingredients before! You've been all around the world in search for the most unique and bizarre of culinary creations! Tell us about a particularly interesting gastronomy dining experience. There was a dish I tried in the north of Spain called ‘Around the World’ which was literally a miniature olive tree from which hung different olives that originated from different countries with all the different tastes and types of
olives to be found all around the world—from Spain all the way to Palestine! And they were grown and harvested under the same agricultural conditions of their home countries, so each olive had the taste and texture of its native soil. I would taste one olive and close my eyes: suddenly I was in Greece. The next I was in China. Another one and I was immediately transported to Mexico. It was a strong and mind-blowing experience! I had literally travelled the world in one sitting, from one place, and at one instant. I learned about the world in a way that only an olive could teach me. In your opinion, what country is the new culinary hotspot? Peru! Peru is just it’s own experience. Let me put it in perspective for you: the world has 32 climates, 28 of which are to be found in Peru. The agricultural possibilities that this unique fact alone offers to the local culinary scene are endless and cannot be duplicated in any other place! Peru has 2000 kinds of potatoes and 300 kinds of corn, just to name a few! The variety and the exclusivity of the crop here makes it so that almost every single dish you try here counts as a gastronomical dining experience in it’s own right! What kind of people enjoy gastronomy dining? Well, first of all, you have to have the time and patience to give this kind of journey the time it needs—whether it is about trying all the different foods out, travelling to a specific
and sometimes far locale, or simply waiting for your long reservation. Beyond that you have to be adventurous enough to really immerse yourself in the experience and be open enough to try out whatever new and crazy dish gets put in front of you! Do you usually travel to certain parts of the world just to experience the unique food? Yes! Do you know how some people plan their entire trips out and make itineraries for what landmarks and tourist spots they’re going to visit during their stay? Well, I do the same thing but with food! It is entirely the theme around which almost all of my trips revolve. To me, the best way to truly experience the culture, the history, and the flow of any city around the world is to try it’s most authentic and innovative food. I see the world through food. Where will your culinary tours take you in the future and what cuisine do you plan to experiment with next? I’ve been hearing a lot about all the undiscovered gems in Japanese cuisine that go beyond the sushi we’re all used to. I always love re-discovering world famous cuisines like Japanese cuisine in a way that most of the world has perhaps not experienced before. I’m still doing my research on Japan so I can plan my trip accordingly and make the necessary reservations ahead of time, but that will hopefully be my next stop inshallah.

How much of an impact has Kuwait had on your life? To be honest, when I travel to other GCC regions and speak in the little Arabic I have, the first reaction I get is "you are so Kuwaiti!" So I guess you could say Kuwait has had a huge impact on my life! Although I travel a lot with my work, my heart belongs here. I always long to come back to Kuwait and when I land in the airport I’m always so happy and excited about my return. I am so loyal to Kuwait because I have learnt so much here, and some of my Kuwaiti friends are honestly as important to me as my family members in Ireland. What have you gained from Kuwait and given Kuwait? I have gained a sense of loyalty, standards, freedom to express myself, acceptance of a different culture and, ultimately, a lot of love. I hope I have given back a sense of my respect for the country. I have also done a lot to give back to this country that I love. I am trying to change how we look at many aspects of life here—from being more open individuals in a strong community to focusing on what we love and having the courage to pursue our dreams. I have also been so touched by the high rates of breast cancer found in Kuwait, so I have set up a fund and a campaign to help the women in Kuwait who are suffering from breast cancer and who really need the assistance. I will be working on bringing that campaign to a different level over the next few months. This is a country which has welcomed me and my beliefs, therefore I want to give back wherever I can. Thankfully, I work in an industry where I can make a real difference (i.e. media) so anything I can do for Kuwait I will. What does Kuwait mean to you on a personal level?
Where are you from? The Emerald Isle—namely Ireland! When did you come to Kuwait? Three years ago to live permanently but I had visited for years before, as I have many close friends who are Kuwaiti. One visit 7 years ago and I was addicted to the country! What do you do? I own a public relations company and specialize in fashion. I also work in TV as a presenter giving advice on fashion and trends with MTV mainly. I have also done shows with Al-Rai and Al-Watan in Kuwait. Why did you choose Kuwait as your home? Working in the industry that I do, true friends, reality and the ability to relax are paramount. Kuwait stole a piece of my heart many years ago and when I used to live in Dubai I would come here all the time to see my friends and have quality time in a country that I love. I choose to live here because I love the country. Kuwaiti's family beliefs and the fact that my Kuwaiti friends are my family away from my real family in Ireland is a blessing. I feel at home here and as they say… home is where the heart is!
What do you love most about Kuwait? Saturdays! Because it's when I spend time eating to excess at family lunch with my adoptive family! I love the culture, the traditions, and the fact that Kuwait is real and hasn't conformed like other Middle Eastern countries. I love the standards people have here, the loyalty to their country, their beliefs and, most of all, I love the fact that I feel so safe and comfortable in Kuwait. What do you think of the Kuwaiti lifestyle and culture? It’s a lifestyle I love! Although there is always something happening I don't feel under pressure to be "seen or be in the scene" which a lot of people tend to feel! Kuwaiti people are different to others in the GCC regions. I love how others in the region think Kuwaitis are "stuck up." I, however, believe we are a country of class and fashion forward movers and shakers! I love the culture as it is so varied and diverse. You can have high-end fashion in malls such as 360 or get a feel of real Kuwait in the Souks. A particular favorite of mine is the fabric souk—I could spend hours there! I also love Bayt Lothan and all the great Kuwaiti talent and culture that it offers to the public. I also love the variety of food and restaurants we have here (although my ever expanding wardrobe doesn't!).
I love the country, the people, and their beliefs. It's so funny that whenever I travel the first question I always get is, “Why would you want to live in Kuwait?” People think it's so strict and backwards here. They think that I am not allowed to go anywhere alone, which is ridiculous! Most people have the wrong idea about Kuwait. I love explaining how we have the highest rate of educated women here. There are so many successful businesswomen in Kuwait and one of my biggest role models Shaikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah is always whom I refer to when I speak of Kuwait and it’s high standards of accomplishment. So I guess you could say Kuwait is in my blood! I am highly protective of the country I call my home away from home. People are always so quick to judge so I love to give the "Kuwaiti Culture Lecture" whenever I get asked such stupid questions as why I would live here. What words would you like to say to Kuwait if you could? First and foremost, thank you Kuwait for welcoming me with such open arms and making me feel so at home in your wonderful country. Please continue to be open to other people’s beliefs and cultures but in the modest manner in which you do so. Don't allow the country to become another region in the Middle East full of ex-pats and no culture. Continue doing what you do… making people like me fall in love with you!

Duchess L u sciou s

H
ala Abu Al-Hasan is far from predictable. In fact, it is one of her least favorite words. The word for Hala is 'daring.' A daring style; a daring attitude; and a daring stor y. She struck out on her own to create Luscious Designs and broke all the rules to create something meaningful of her ver y own. Hala radiates at a higher frequency and marches to the beat of her own drum and, in doing so, she has emerged as a fashion duchess of the loud, the free-spirited, and deliciously intriguing.
When and how did your interest in fashion design really start? I was at a friend’s birthday party wearing one of my own designs and everyone asked me where my dress was from. One of the girls even wanted to buy it from me! All the interest and the motivation I got from everyone around me inspired me to follow my dream and start Luscious. What is the most exciting aspect of being a fashion designer? Mixing different fabrics together and creating a new, unique piece out of two separate elements; getting inspired by generations and artists that came before me to create a new piece and a new identity in fashion. There are so many inspiring fashion eras and figures that have influenced my work like 60’s retro, modern contemporary and, most recently, artists like Michael Jackson have strongly inspired my own collection and gave it a distinct flavor. It’s exciting to get inspired by others and then take their creative effort and use it make pieces that are unique to you and personify your own style. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in starting Luscious Designs? We live in a culture that flocks after the trend. I like to create pieces that are different and that speak to the individuality of the person wearing it as opposed to just following the trends. Some people might not accept that idea and not understand what I’m trying to do. I also had a hard time finding the perfect tailor but once I did it was smooth sailing from there.
72 www.thecitym.com
What does your sense of style say about you? It says I’m daring. I absolutely love to mix different colors together and take exciting risks with my look. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but I find it intriguing and I absolutely love it. I’d rather take a risk and fail than always play by the rules and stay on the safe side all the time. I hate being always being predictable. It’s boring and it’s not me.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Do you believe that fashion is art? Why or why not? Every person has his or her own style when it comes to fashion. Not everyone can pull this off—not everyone knows how to capture his or her own essence and style through fashion. It can be tricky to nail down and to achieve the confidence you need to let your clothes represent you in that way. When you can create your own style and stop blindly imitating the trend it is absolutely an artistic expression. That’s why, for many people, the way they dress is their art form and their fashion style is the art itself.
Who are your fashion icons?
What is your creative process like when creating a new Luscious garment or piece? Well, creating a piece that is daring and that isn’t usually seen anywhere else can be a difficult process. It has it’s beautiful moments and it’s boring moments but it’s a process that I enjoy very much. I love taking those huge risks when trying to create something that will truly catch someone’s eye. I want people to see a woman wearing Luscious and ask, ‘who is she?’ Getting to that point takes lots of time, energy, patience, and crazy risk!
This might sound weird but I always dream of a fashion runway and I picture the designs that are in this kind of high-end, dreamy fashion show. I envision the movement, the glimmer, and the essence of the piece before I even start sketching it! Once I see that image in my mind’s eye I then start to rough sketch the look and turning it into a reality. I love Balmain, Rami Kadi, and Zuhair Murad. And whoever knows me knows that I am a Christian Louboutin freak! That is by far my favorite, most coveted designer when it comes to shoes. What defines a great design in your opinion? A cut that suits your body and the perfect finishing. It’s important for a look to be both flattering and yet subtly unique and intriguing. However, as a rule, I always tell people to never look at a design and judge. Wear it first, then judge. Tell us about the exciting future plans you have in store for Luscious! For the upcoming winter collection, Luscious will, as always, inspired by artists and icons that started way back when and re-defined fashion in their own way. It will be a meeting of both my own design flair and the great artists and creations of the past. Stay tuned for a lot of surprises and fashion shows from Luscious!

Tell us more about Fabs and how you got started in the fashion world. Well, Fabs is a new idea for a multi-brand store that I wanted to be a little different than anything else in Kuwait. I wanted to bring a collection of different and extremely highend Kuwaiti designers that represent both global style and our cultural taste. It’s kind of like a mini Harvey Nichols or Debenhams but with a unique, Kuwaiti flavor. What makes Fabs stand out from other multi-brand stores in Kuwait? Two things. First, we pride ourselves on being a unique place that encourages, features, and supports Kuwaiti designers and Kuwaiti talents. Second, we focus very strongly on our customers’ need for variety and change so we make sure to routinely change our products and bring in the newest collections and creations on a monthly basis so that our customers will always have access to the newest and the chicest fashion! What are the different lines and collections that Fabs offers to it's customers? We try to offer a variety of local and global collections and lines to both help prop up and support the local talent that deserves it and
to provide an outlet for the popular, global brands that everyone knows and loves. So it varies. We have Mougah by Hanan Al-Othman and Dalal Al-Dashti. We have Golden Goose deluxe shoe brand. We have Kuwait’s own Purlieus Closet. We have Aeropostale. We have the beautiful Kuwaiti designs of Hemline. And that is only to name a few. Most recently we’ve brought the extremely luxurious and well-tailored UK brand AQAQ exclusively to Kuwait and we’re very excited about sharing it with our unique Kuwaiti clientele!
What do you think the Kuwaiti customer most values in their fashion shopping experience? I think the Kuwaiti customer has developed a very discerning taste for high quality and truly luxurious materials. Our worldly and expansive shopping experience have taught most Kuwaiti shoppers the difference between what constitutes original, wellmade products and those that are perhaps not as high in quality. We seek exclusivity and refinement wherever we go and shopping is no exception!
How do you choose what collections to include in Fabs?
What are some future collections that you'd like to introduce to the Kuwaiti market in Fabs? As I said before, we are now going to exclusively launch our new AQAQ brand from the UK. We are always looking for more beautiful, high-end products to feature exclusively in our store and will continue to do so. My first and foremost aim, however, is to continue to shed a light on and to support our talented designers here in Kuwait and in the Gulf. That has always been the main idea and the driving force behind Fabs: to give more and more creative people in Kuwait the platform they need and deserve to spread, to inspire, and to succeed.
That is a secret that I would much prefer you to come and find out for yourself when you step into Fabs! Generally speaking I make sure to look at and closely examine all the different lines and collections that I come across piece by piece before displaying them in the store. It’s how I like to maintain a specific and sophisticated standard of all the products that are displayed in Fabs. What do you want your customers to feel upon entering Fabs? Comfortable, happy, relaxed, and well-hosted.

There is perhaps nothing more luxurious to the touch and the eye than a lustrously draped, silk dress. A vision of vibrant color and striking design is the fashion pinnacle of what it means to look and feel like a million bucks. Khaled Al-Ayoub is one such designer whose drive and passion for the romantic luxury of a feminine dress or the exciting spark of a rhinestone adornment is taking Kuwait by storm and is defining a new meaning for decadent taste and effortless fashion.

Did you undertake any kind of formal fashion education in college or within the industry, or did you find your way to fashion through a different route? My love for fashion design stems and grew out of a very beautiful environment. My mother has always had a keen and refined taste when it came to aesthetic beauty and especially so when it comes to fashion. She would choose the finest and most luxurious of fabrics and use them to design and make her own unique attire. So I was exposed to this creative, vibrant world of color, fabrics, and endless fashion possibility from a very early age. It is an inherited trait and passion. I used to gather my mother’s leftover fabrics and make some simple yet ambitious pieces of my own out of them. This later evolved into a desire to learn more about the craft so I enrolled in several professional courses outside of Kuwait in order to have a better grasp of fashion design. My artistic aptitude for drawing has also helped me immensely when it comes to sketching and combining different colors. How would you describe your collections and your special design touch? Romantic; elegant; and confident. These are the defining elements and themes that govern my design and this is the vibe I try to give when creating all of my pieces. What type of material do you most prefer to use? Well, I suppose that depends on the season and the type of frock. I try to dabble in every
82 www.thecitym.com
kind of fabric and my choice of material usually falls on the season and the demands of the piece itself. Where do you get all your luxurious textiles from? Some of my textiles are locally woven, and others are imported from several international sources if they are to be used for everyday, casual pieces that don’t require any special sowing or adornments. The finest textiles that require a lot of workmanship as far as needlework and embroidery are concerned are handmade and imported from India and Turkey. What is the most challenging part of creating a design? I believe the best designers are those that can appeal to a large audience of various and diverse tastes, while still leaving a visible, unique fingerprint behind. This is perhaps the most difficult aspect of creating your own work but I don’t find it challenging as much as I find it enthralling! It’s a thrill to know that you have made your mark and that you have won the approval of your peers and customers at the same time. What about the most fun part? When the piece is finally finished and I get to drape the final product of my passion and my creative vision on the mannequin it is an unparalleled feeling. I look at the mannequin and it is as if I am looking at a close and dear friend; like looking at a soul draped in something beautiful.
What is your proudest achievement as a designer so far? I can’t say that I’ve reached a certain desired level in my career because I think the very best designers continue to aim higher and higher and never rest on their laurels. However, I’m proud to say that I’ve reached a point in my career that I’m now able to win over the praise and approval of my large customer base, the majority of which are delighted to wear my designs just as they are and believe in my creative vision enough to invest in it and use it to express their own identities. It’s a great feeling! What is the working atmosphere you like to be in when you create? Is your workspace messy or is it neat and organized? I always have my pencil and sketchpad with me everywhere I go. Whether I’m alone, out with family and friends, or travelling abroad—I always make sure to keep it with me for whenever inspiration strikes, and it strikes often! I’m inspired by many different atmospheres and moments that I see throughout the day and I make notes and quick sketches whenever I can. At the end of the day I sit quietly with myself and look over all that I had made a note of and I use that daily inspiration to work with the fabrics and drape my mannequin friend once more! What are your favorite sources for design inspiration? All things colorful and full of vibrant energy! Anything that moves my thoughts and feelings is the strongest source of design inspiration. What piece of clothing would you most like to make that you haven't so far? Wedding dresses. I’d really love to create a wedding dress that represents all the femininity and the elegance of the female figure and of this opulent moment in a women’s life. But, as always, I want to do it in a way that has not been done or seen before and a way that represents my own design aesthetic. What new and exciting things can we expect from your upcoming collection? I am currently gearing up to create a new line of blazers that take on new and exciting shapes than your usual blazer. I’m also creating a new evening line that is based on the simple, luxurious quality and color of the fabric itself, along with my own special touches.

BRIGHT SPARKS The story of ZY Jewellery
@ZYJewellery
www.thecitym.com 85 Photographer: Ahmad Al-Qattan
Abdulazim Al-Arbash and Yousef Al-Yousify had a dream with a particular light to it; a stupendous shine; an effervescent glimmer. They dreamed of diamonds, and rubies, and luxurious jewels as far as the eye can see, all honed and sculpted at their very own fingertips and out of their own creative imaginations. They wanted to create a source of real Kuwaiti innovation when it comes to the fine and decadent work of making beautiful jewellery. And so was the creation of ZY Jewllery. A small but aptly growing business that prides itself on the authenticity of it’s luxurious, one-of-a-kind, glimmering products and which is, at it’s very heart, a shining example of Kuwait’s refined sensibilities and sophisticated lifestyle. Both in make and in essence, ZY Jewellery is a Kuwaiti product through and through. The idea
86 www.thecitym.com
behind ZY Jewellery was not merely luxury by refinement, but rather luxury by authenticity— luxury by exclusivity. Abdulazim’s and Yousef’s most favorite adjective when describing their impressive line-up of various jewels and jewellery pieces is ‘real.’ “It’s all real!” They excitedly and proudly proclaim. By ‘real’ they mean to say many things. Real designs that they themselves—young, ambitious Kuwaitis—have originally come up with and conceptualized. Real precious stones, diamonds, and solid gold that ranges from rubies to sapphires to carat diamonds and beyond! Real, unparalleled luxury that stems and grows right out of Kuwait and that is committed to providing no less than the highest standards of craftsmanship and novelty.
Having had just completed their first year in their effervescent journey, creating and selling jewellery has been nothing short of a unique Kuwaiti delicacy to the ZY duo. Standing adjacent to Kuwait’s illustrious Gold Souk in Mubarakiya, ZY Jewllery can be found in AlArbash Commerical Center, surrounded by all the pulsating life and culture of Kuwait City, both old and new. Of their blinged out assortment, a few special favorites caught our eye. Their one-diamond 18K rose gold bracelet is a piece that does away with the noise and the overwrought clashes of aggressive jewellery. It is an understated and delicate statement that imbues its wearer with a sense of sophistication and elegance that no amount of over excessive
bling can ever provide. It is luxury in its purest form: classy and assured in it’s supreme quality. Another hand adornment that we were equally captivated by was the stackable ring collection that comes in pure emerald, sapphire, and ruby on decadent white gold. The precious and the almost royal quality that the stones give to this otherwise everyday, unvarnished piece defines a sense of luxury that appeals to the younger, more hip clientele who seek versatility in their elegance. Stacked together these rings are a perfect addition for the modern girl who is always on the go and who wants to add a subtle glimmer of class to her daily attire. When it comes to necklaces, there was something about the youthful yet elegant cut and shine of the ZY flower collection,
particularly the Amethyst and Tourmaline with diamond on 18K white gold. While it might not be everyone’s choice of shape, there is something that evokes the feeling of airy, spring-inspired lightness in the subtle yet alluring placement of the stones. They are vibrant yet decadent; dainty yet captivating. This makes the flower necklaces a really great choice for those of us who are forever young and spritely at heart. ZY’s gold sandstone with diamonds and 18K rose gold bracelet also carries that chic, urban look and then transports it to a level of luxe effortlessness. Because sandstone is one of those elements that’s a little rough around the edges, it complements the delicacy of the diamonds and the rose gold perfectly and
makes for a perfect balance of hip, streetchic and elegant class. We recommend these beauties for the edgy, adventurous types who want to make a statement on both refined taste and confident attitudes. In Kuwait, talent and innovation have been on the rise lately and Abdulazim Al-Arbash and Yousef Al-Yousefy are the perfect examples of this exciting cultural change in Kuwait’s luxury market. Their attitudes towards creation, the quality of their merchandise, and their desire to always give the finest and the most authentic of Kuwait is all entirely real. Real talent, real shine, and real promise is to be found at ZY Jewellery!

MAI AL-KHALIFA meets
FATMA AL-MULLA
Blending the resolutely modern and trendy style of the world with the intensely local and cultured flavor of Khaleeji imagery is a delicate dance which many have tried their hands at but few have been able to perfect. Dubai-based pop art fashion designer and visual artist is among those few. Young, creative, and full of potential energy, Fatma has made a distinct name for herself and her artwork—enough to be recognized by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashed and taken under his patronage in his prestigious, exclusive establishment for young business leaders. She is smart, confident, and forward thinking in the ways of both entrepreneurship and cultural commentary and I got to sit down with her for our December issue to talk more about her talent, her achievement, and what comes next! What is your background? I am an Emirati artist/designer from Dubai. I studied in the American University of Sharjah and attained a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication.
that I can recall but it was very overwhelming seeing how people supported my work which helped me move forward.
How did you get started in this business?
My typical customers are the ones who understand art and have an appreciation for popular culture. My website visitors vary to be honest, as its more universal.
I never intentionally planned on starting a label. I guess you can say it happened by accident. I started posting my illustrations on my blog (http://fatmaalmulla.wordpress.com/) and people started viewing my illustrations and using them as display images on their social media accounts, BBMs, and WhatsApps. Eventually it led me to want to put my items on merchandise that people can actually purchase. So I did my research and decided to start my business by putting my illustrations on plain, white, fitted t-shirts. What is a good early story about your business? Its very hard starting a business from the ground up, and I don’t have a particular story
88 www.thecitym.com
Who is your typical customer or website visitor?
What are some interesting statistics? Most of the people who follow my blog are non-Arabic speakers and came from the west, which was extremely interesting to me. Their curiosity towards the Arabic language pushed them forward to want to know what more about was written on the blog, which I found very exciting. What is unusual or unique about your business, in comparison to your competitors or similar businesses? What is unique about my business is that it
addresses cultural and social issues in a very tongue-in-cheek manner by using patterns, illustrations, and Arabic phrases that we all know and can familiarize with. And when viewing my work one always gets a sense of a double meaning going on, which always intrigues me when I see people reacting to it in different ways. How would someone external describe your business? I’d leave them to decide that. Is there a customer experience you are most proud of? I was once entering the parking of one of the shopping malls here in the UAE and I saw a group of 3 young girls standing waiting for their cars at the valet, and they were carrying my ‘FMM CandyBags’ and I was so deliriously happy! When I parked, I passed them and I thanked them for carrying my bag, and they were happy to have met me as well! They gave me feedback on what other colors and sizes
they would like the bag to come in so it was a really great, memorable, and humbling experience. How do you find the market in Bahrain and are people responding to your products? The market in Bahrain is extremely Avant grade and fashionable so I was very keen on people’s responses to my brand, and after having my items displayed in Green Diamond Boutique, I got many positive feedbacks and requests for more. Does your business have an online presence on other social web spaces like: Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Instagram? Yes, you can find me on Instagram: @FMMbyFatmaAlMulla. What are some of your greatest challenges in creating your business? There are really so many challenges to be faced as a small business owner. That can be anything from finding the right manufactur-
ers, the right quality, to executing the right marketing strategy. Creating something new and that is your own is always a challenge, but a rewarding one in the end. How long it did it take you to present your idea and where did this first impression take place? It took place in Dubai, and I didn’t present my idea to anyone I merely initiated it myself and then later when I felt like I had I built a foundation and have laid the necessities, the next step was to have a registered license and, based on that, I gave a proposal to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders. They accepted my proposal, which led to me becoming one of the many local businesses under their umbrella of the prestigious SME. What was the response like from family, friends, and relatives when you decided to start out on your own? I was and still am very fortunate and blessed
to have a supporting family, so when I decided to start my business they aided me in whatever way they could. What are the goals you would still like to accomplish? It would be great to do more and benefit society by doing charity work. It would also be amazing to help young Khaleeji designers establish themselves, as not much attention is given to a large portion of the regional Khaleeji designers who are working extremely hard to present something special and well-executed. It would be great to build a platform with other established designers to help others start and follow their dreams just like we did.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW?
Arabic music is one of those art forms that is only as allusive and captivating as the voice which sings it and the hands that play it. It is an abiding and deepseated love affair between the musician and his instrument, be it his voice or his oud. Aziz Al-Nasarallah has known and lived this love affair for as long as he can remember. As a strong emerging voice in the young, Arabic music scene, Aziz is re-defining the parameters of what constitues an Arab, musical identiy in today's modern, global stage. With an upcoming single set to drop this December, we asked Aziz about when and how he knew that, to him, music was as akin as a native tongue.

You can follow up on Aziz’s news and check out his music and videos on:www.soundcloud.com/azizn zoozyn @azizalnasrallah @azizn Listening to, playing or making music wasn’t really a choice. I grew up with it being an integral part of my life. It could be the consequence of a slew of circumstances, or maybe I’m just wired that way. I've been involved in music for as far as I can remember. I do know that as a child I wouldn't be comfortable unless I zone out to a song or a mix tape I liked. I wasn't a very social kid that's for sure. I lived in a world I made up in my head a lot and music was a perfect medium to take me there. I started fidgeting and playing around with toy musical instruments. I specifically remember a blue plastic [toy] baby grand piano that I would play for hours even if I wasn't really playing anything. Then came my kindergarten teacher in Kuala Lumpur who used to have all the kids sing along with her as she played the zither. I was immediately her biggest fan. She was a rockstar to me and I wanted to be just like her. Before any kind of formal training, I would sing and mimic different songs I was exposed to; from Arabic music my parents played, to Disney and of course a ton of 80's pop music. My parents picked up on my obsession and thankfully started me early. They had me take piano, flute and music theory lessons and that was it. I started venturing into classical music and jazz and learned the violin and later the oud to further explore my own heritage’s rich musical background. That kind of musical training really gave me the tools to express myself. As for making my own music, my sound is the byproduct of all the influences and experiences I have had and what I will experience in the future. I think because I’m an acoustic instrumentalist, I’m drawn more towards live music as opposed to electronically generated sounds. The thought that we as people can make beautiful sounds from organically made instruments thrills me. You can hear the difference from one player to another. Each musician has his special voice and develops his own technique much like how different painters can be distinguished by their brushstrokes. It’s a craft that has to be constantly perfected but you can never really be perfect. Exploring new instruments from around the world and learning how to play them is one of my biggest joys. The process is like making friends with someone new. I’d pick up the instrument, navigate it, learn slowly how it speaks and in the process I learn a lot about it’s history and how and for what purpose it was made as well. You’d be surprised at how much you can learn about another culture just by learning their music. Then I have the habit of making these instruments meet each other and see how well they get along in my music through trial and error and when the ingredients are just right its just down right beautiful. It’s like hearing different continents sing at the same time in perfect harmony. I may not be perfect, but besides Arabic, I could safely say that music is my native tongue.

Why the name 'Caviar' for an advertising and media company? With a bit of revisionist history, I'd say that the name 'Caviar' has helped expose us to clientele with discriminating tastes, who would never settle for a close substitute. It has also revealed itself to be a memorable, and engaging name that leaves room for personal interpretation, and ascription. How did Caviar get it's start? We started at the end of 1998, and dabbled in the market for a couple of years. As you can imagine, the advertising landscape was significantly different than today, with the multinational agencies dominating the market. Through faith, fate, and blind luck, we serendipitously landed a contract for an animated TV commercial for MTC (ZAIN). That was our big break, and that was when we knew that we could absolutely make a career out of this. How did you fuse Caviar Creative and Caviar Production together? With great difficulty. The epiphany was in re-
alizing that we need to focus on that which makes us unique, which is our creative drive; and not to worry about covering the entire spectrum of communication services. In essence, we stopped trying to be all things to all people. What are the skills needed to succeed in advertising? Flexibility. Flexibility in interpreting the brief; flexibility in the creative approach; and flexibility in dealing with the client are all extremely important if you plan on making it in advertising. You cannot be rigid, and you absolutely must learn to put yourself in the target audiences' shoes. That, basically, is what communication is all about. How do we know that advertising campaigns work? Because people can name, and empathize with brands. There is a clear pattern of consumer purchases that are influenced by brand recognition, you and me included. Across the globe, corporations whose primary objective is to maximize value, continue to allocate major
portions of their revenues towards advertising. Also because I still have a job. The proof, essentially, is in the pudding. What leadership skills are necessary in a creative industry? Faith in your ability, and in the ability of those around you. In a paradoxical way the only way you can attain full control, is by learning to let go. I no longer try to be the fulcrum of all that is Caviar—that is not my job. My job is to coach, and to lead by example. Do you identify yourself with certain brands? As we enter the 10th year of our relationship with NBK, there is no denying our bond, and close association. It is very telling that anytime one of my acquaintances chances upon camel-related content, they forward it to me. It would seem that I, in my social circles at least, have achieved top-of-mind awareness when it relates to camels. Not necessarily a goal I was striving towards at the onset of my career, but a welcomed and proud association.

QUSAI Versatility is a vital component of artistry, especially so when it comes to music. Qusai Khadir, one of the Gulf’s most prominent and intriguing hip-hop artists,

knows all about this familiar need to diversify. He goes by many names: ‘Don Legend;’ ‘The Kameleon;’ or simply ‘Qusai.’ His rhymes and his choice of beats are globally relevant and locally influenced. In his effortless, distinguished flow of both Arabic and English verse and his deep, abiding understanding of the musical craft, Qusai represents Khaleeji hip-hop's unofficial multicultural conscience. www.thecitym.com 107
Our main message as Arab hip-hop artists, as far as I can see, is peace. With all the problems that we’ve been facing as an Arab region lately, and all the unfortunate disturbances that have been going on around us, peace really is the number one message we all need to focus on.

h a t ’s y o u r f i r s t i m p r e s s i o n of Kuwait so far?
I love Kuwait! Just because of the fact that we are all Khaleeji brothers and sisters and the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait is one of the most revered, timehonored relationships in the region. And, thankfully, I’ve had a lot of traction in Kuwait throughout my career and have been given so much support and encouragement as a hip-hop artist by the Kuwaiti community but I haven’t had the chance to visit or work in Kuwait until now. I really love it here—I wish I could stay longer!
When did you decide to pursue entertainment or music specifically?
if we just look for it. That’s what I seek out in my music and what I try to portray.
Ever since I was a little kid! I was an underground artist for a pretty long time before I got my break. I lived in the US for about 10 years where I learned a lot more about hiphop culture, hip-hop music, and got a better understanding of the business as a whole. So when I finally returned I knew that I wanted to be different. I wanted present something new to the local hip-hop scene. I wanted to infuse global hip-hop and my own local, unique culture and background in a way that hadn’t been seen before. And now, three albums in and another album hopefully to land sometime in 2014, I feel like I’ve achieved that. I’ve been pretty blessed.
Who are the international artists that you listen to?
How has your culture or your background influenced your music? Majorly! I am, first and foremost, an Arab. An Arab; Hejazi; Saudi Arabian; Khaleeji—these are all very meaningful parts of who I am. I have a deep and soulful love for Arabic music and my native tongue is Arabic. Music has the special benefit of being an international language and English is, at the current time, the number one spoken language around the world so what I try to do is to blend that international platform with a distinctly Arab and Khaleeji flavor. So that means an Arab vocal touch; Arab-inspired stories and lyrics; and, of course, Arab style music that is unique to us. What inspires you as a creative person? Life. Life is the biggest teacher. Life has something new to offer us every single day
Is it ok if I say everybody? I really do listen to everyone I can! And not only hip-hop—in fact hip-hop is one of the genres I least listen to. I listen to old-school classics. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of great stuff that came out of the 60s and 80s, both Arabic and English. I love music in all it’s forms and I try my best to let the work of other great people inform my own work and make it special in it’s own way too. So how has your music, and the Arab hiphop industry as a whole, evolved over the course of your own career? My music is basically my life. It’s a struggle because of the fact that hip-hop in the Arab world is still a fledgling art form with a fledgling market. People are just starting to see it, to understand it, and to accept it over here. My mission and the mission of other Arab hiphop artists is to help expand this industry, but I think the only way we can do that is by presenting something clean, fresh, and unlike the stuff that people are doing elsewhere. We need to be originals in order to stand out and be taken seriously both as individual artists and as an industry. Thankfully, I’ve been taking that mission step-by-step over time and it’s looking promising. Do you think of hip-hop and rap as poetry? Well, rap is absolutely poetry. The difference
between rap and hip-hop, I think, is that rap is something you do while hip-hop is something you live. In that way, rap is one of hip-hop’s main elements and avenues. Rap is an art form that originated from the structure and the rhythms of poetic rhyme. So, in essence, if you took out the music from a rap song and just listened to recitation and the flow of the words, it is absolute poetry. Where do you see Arab hip-hop headed in the next few years? I see it going the distance because our main message as Arab hip-hop artists, as far as I can see, is peace. With all the problems that we’ve been facing as an Arab region lately, and all the unfortunate disturbances that have been going on around us, peace really is the number one message we all need to focus on. All eyes are on us right now. So, with that kind of attention, there have been a lot of young, talented ambassadors that have come out of the Arab hip-hop community that are showing the world that we really do have something else to offer and something that calls for peace and unity instead of violence and hate. What’s new on the horizon for Qusai? Be on the look out! I believe that actions really do speak louder than words so I’ll stay quiet about that for now. I hate surprises but I love to surprise people! So expect the unexpected inshallah.

Think Google: what comes to mind? A portal to education. A pioneer to innovation. A sea of endless technological wonder. But above all, Google is a curator: of ideas, of inspiration, and of awe. Having recently collaborated with Wataniya in order to inspire innovation within and around Kuwait, Google’s Regional MENA Manager Mohammad Murad stopped by to welcome and usher in this exciting new age of promise and wonder to Kuwait. We had the chance to probe his keen mind on some of the most interesting and hot-topic questions about technology and innovation both here at home and around the world!
Photographer: Ahmad Al-Qattan
What excites Google? 114 www.thecitym.com
That’s a really good question! At Google we think the most exciting ventures are those that are born out of both innovative ambition and technical capability. So, as a rule of thumb, we usually judge new ideas and innovations based on what we like to call ‘The Toothbrush Test.’ So, like the toothbrush, it has to be something that you hopefully use at least twice a day. It has to be something that changes your life dramatically for the better. And, finally, it has to be something that comes naturally to you and that you can just do with ease on a daily basis. It has to be an extension of your body or yourself and not seem like a complex gadget or a mechanical device. If anything comes down the pipeline that is as radically life altering, accessible, and organically useable as the invention of the toothbrush then we’re pretty excited about it at Google.
What will the user experience look like in 5 years? I think we’re going to continue to see more and more innovations that remove or shrink the barrier between the technology and the usability. Innovation is going to be more and more about giving users a more immersive and intuitive experience in which you no longer feel like you’re using a complex device but rather something that is inherently built for and within you—which is, of course, a mark of the greatest technological innovations we’ve seen to date.
troduced and it’s very important for telecom companies. Are we currently living in the age of distraction or the age of engagement? Well, let me paint a picture in your head. Today, if you are a brand of any kind—like a magazine or a publication—it’s very difficult to cut through the clutter. We’re constantly being bombarded by tons of information all the time. It’s as if we’re all in a very large party, with very loud music, and you’re trying to sell something! It can be very difficult, but it’s not impossible. If you are relevant, if you find the right people, and if you bring a special value to them they will pay attention to you and engage with your brand. So, at this point in time, I think information and service providers are all going to be kept on their toes because now the user is the one in control. Users today are very smart and they can quickly sense the difference between a distracting brand and a truly engaging brand. And, the more we progress, the more we’re going to see people opting for and immediately identifying engaging products and brands as opposed to the merely distracting ones.
What are some examples of this oncoming change? Well let’s take, for example, self-driving cars or Google Glass. A lot of people first met these innovations with skepticism because they really immerse themselves in the heart of the human experience in a way that no one has ever seen before. These are inventions that are going to change the way we think of communication, transportation, and technological usability. So, while some have been skeptical about these new innovations, the majority of users are really excited about them and can’t wait to try them out! These are some of the inventions that, I think, are going to drastically change the user experience in the coming years and for the better. How do you view the way that telecom companies can be a catalyst for this technological change? I think telecom companies are beginning to move into a new phase in their life cycles in which they’re going to really focus on new innovations, marketing, and products and services. The shift has already started and it’s getting stronger and stronger. The key factor in pulling off this shift as seamlessly as possible is, once again, to focus on the user. Telecom companies need to make sure that their users have the appetite for doing new things and maybe sometimes failing; maybe not always doing things right from the get-go. The mentality of perfection from the start has to go away if you want herald innovation in any region. Because if it’s going to take, let’s say, 5 years before you perfect and launch a product it’ll be too late or irrelevant by the time you launch it. Do you think there is a natural partnership between Google and telecom companies? Yes, I do! Google will always have a very small presence in certain countries, except for the headquarters of course. So, in the Middle East and North Africa region, we just have about 100 people. That’s a fraction of the number of people in telecom companies. So we at Google need to communicate and partner with telecom companies just as much as they need us. It’s a symbiotic relationship. They understand the social and cultural environment much better than us and we under-
Google and Wataniya have recently partnered together as innovation creators in Kuwait and the region. What are the drivers that help both Wataniya and Google to excel in that way? It’s about having innovation in your DNA. Wataniya has that innovative strand in their DNA, as do we. They want to bring people new and exciting things but also things that appeal naturally to them and seamlessly fit into their daily lives. Wataniya wants to allow their users to innovate and reach their highest possible potentials through technology that is quick, current, and friendly. Google gives them the internal set up to create this atmosphere of innovation and, on their part, Wataniya allows it to grow and reach as many users as possible in a really smart and relevant way. stand the technology and the Internet a little bit better, so it’s a natural partnership where we bring scalable things and they bring local knowledge and local expertise. What are some examples of the way Google has collaborated with telecom companies? Well, Android—which is our mobile platform—is very dear to the hearts of telecom companies. So things that we’ve been doing are, for example, carrier billings in which you can use your mobile phone to pay for apps and other products. This is a very widely and rapidly expanding innovation that we’ve in-
What is your current favorite technological device? Without a doubt, the mobile phone! I suspect it’s going to be a favorite for a very long time and here’s why: the mobile phone has gone through an evolution from being just a device and into becoming an extension of our lives. To me, my mobile phone, whichever brand it may be, is my life’s remote control. I do everything on it. I start to search for things on my mobile phone. It’s the first thing I reach for in the morning, it’s the last thing I drop in the evening. I can’t live without it. It’s made a sea change in the user experience that very few other devices have been able to do.

Off to the races There is perhaps no sport we can think of more regal and grand than equestrian sports, and this is especially true when it comes to the Arab tradition. One of Kuwait's youngest and most promising global representatives in this dignified arena is Marshoud Al-Marshoud, a talented show-jumper who's agility and strength in performance is only bested by his heart and passion in spirit.

Tell us a little more about yourself and how you got interested in equestrian sports. I'm currently a student in the course of pursuing my business degree, and I’m a horse rider as well. The fact that horse riding is the only sport that deals with not only the physical, mental, and emotional factors of the human body was very interesting to me. Another major factor in my choice to pursue horse riding is the daily encounter and bonding that occurs between a live animal and a human in order to carry out the sport. How did you get into horse-riding and why did you find it so appealing? At a young age my parents strongly encouraged my sister and I to take up horse riding as a hobby and to spend our free time. Later on, I found the feeling of accomplishment and thrill when riding a horse very personally appealing. Are you specialized in a specific kind of equestrian sport, like show-jumping or endurance riding? Yes, I'm currently specialized in show-jumping. What are the national and regional competitions that you participated in throughout your career, and where did you place in them? Locally, I participate on a weekly basis. Regionally I’ve competed in the GCC show jumping championship in Riyadh several
times and did exceptionally well. On an international, level I previously competed while on summers abroad in Germany and also did thankfully well. How does it feel to represent Kuwait in such a royal and world-class sport? It's an honor to represent Kuwait in any way and doing so while practicing the thing I love most is pretty amazing. The sense of accomplishment pushes me to achieve more and do better all the time. The only drawback is the lack of support from the officials. Horse riding is an expensive sport and all the riders are financially dependent on themselves, which is something that tends to discourage many talented riders. Most of our neighboring countries have a specified budget for sports (including equestrian sports) except Kuwait. There is no limit to how far the Kuwaiti riders can truly go with the right financial and motivational support from our officals. What are the factors that distinguish male and female horse-riders from one another? In my opinion, male and female riders have both achieved high rankings in the riding world and so I don’t think gender affects performance. The only thing that might make difference is that males can sometimes be a little tougher on the horses than the female riders. That difference can be positive or negative depending on the horse. What kind of horse is usually best suited for equestrian sports? Some breeds are better suited for the equestrian world. The two main types are categorized as ‘hot-bloods.’ These are swift, fast horses used for racing and speed. These types of horses are usually a great choice for most equestrian sports and competitions. How do you develop a bond between you and your horse? The development of a strong bond between a rider and his horse takes time and patience. Usually it's an instant bond you get from your first solitary encounter, which is later better-formed and strengthened over time. What is your training process like? The training process is time consuming. As for myself I ride daily flatwork and jump twice a week with only Saturdays off in order for both the horse and I to rest. What are your future plans and goals in the equestrian world? I have short-term goals, which basically revolve around improving my performance in the weekly competitions. In the long-term I hope to compete in the Arab league in a grand prix class.

Where would all the illustrious power players of today (and yesterday for that matter) be without the mighty Range Rover? For decades now this overpowering presence and self-proclaimed beast has been the automobile of choice for all those who are above the fray of a common vehicle. And, as is always the way, the latest Range Rover incarnation has one-upped itself yet again in every possible category. Internationally dubbed as the most refined and highly engineered Range Rover class to date, this is one creation that is sure to win the approval of all the VIPs across the board. From glossed up royalty to swagger-swinging rappers, the Range Rover is one of the most coveted, on-road luxury statements that any illustrious figure can make today.

The luxury of owning a Range Rover is one which is undeniable. In many ways, people simply get a Range Rover simply because they want to say that they can. But unlike your regular Rolex and your fine-tailored Italian suit, the Range Rover is no delicate production. Here is one highly desired and ultra expensive luxury that can play on both ends of the spectrum: unbeatable status symbol and capable road warrior. Comfort Comfortable seems like way too much of an understatement when describing the feel of the Range Rover cabin. It seems like too dull and unfair an ascription for this haven of luxury. The wide, leather seats are damn near butter, the steering wheel is heated, the carpets are lush, the climate control works like a charm and even the wind and road noise is virtually nonexistent. It is almost impossible to imagine and very easy to forget that just under the feet of the driver and the passenger is one snare-blowing V8 engine. The experience is vehicular serenity at it's peak. Car safety Eight airbags are standard and they come with the ever reliable Hill Descent Control (HDC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), ABS and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). All

of these sure-fire add ons should make the Range Rover a pretty safe call on the road. Let's not forget that we are talking about a piece of machinery that weights just over two and a half tonnes--no small cookie to handle on the road. Quality and image This one is a no-brainer. There are no SUV brands on the market who have ever been able to exceed the Range Rover in levels of visual sophistication and class. Hands down the winner of the beauty contest. Driver appeal In order to give the Ranger Rover it's proper due, we have to split this category into two seperate sub-categories. Off-road the Range Rover does much better than it's admittedly weak 'Chelsea Tractor' name suggests. An extremely capable drive in rougher climes. When it comes to dips, gorges, brooks, muddy banks, the Range Rover overcomes them all with such ease and style that it's almost evil. On the road, once you lower the suspension, the Range Rover drives with a composed class that is regal in it's smooth curves and turns. Of course, this is a top-heavy vehicle so some amount of body roll can be expected but it is hardly an unnerving or noticeable flaw.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 20)
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)
Start forgiving yourself for past mistakes. Remem-
help put romantic differences into perspective.
Whether it’s a vacation, a business trip or just some personal space you’re taking, don’t leave your partner far behind. Romance is as rocky as ever, and you really need to learn when it’s best to hang in there and when it’s time to call it quits.
TAURUS (April 21 - MAY 21)
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)
Don’t let holiday spending get out of hand. Giving is one thing, but extravagance is quite another. Stop spending needlessly. A Gemini gives you some good advice this month. Take it. And, don’t let your stubbornness get in the way of asking questions. Good news comes on a Tuesday.
Why does it always seem like two steps forward, three steps back where your career is concerned, Scorpio? Because you never ask for more. Practice being assertive on the job this month. A boss lets you know of a good opportunity on a Monday, which calls for lots of creativity.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 - December 21)
Take time off for a very early spring-cleaning. Go through closets, files and piles of paper, and throw out any unwanted clutter. It’s time to make room for new things. Is that Capricorn flirting with you at work? Yes. Fight the urge to rush it. Things have a way of flourishing on their own.
A hectic holiday schedule may need some adjustments. Stop making appointments you don’t intend to keep. A Leo friend is annoyed with empty promises. A well-deserved day off this month gives you time to collect your thoughts and figure out what you want.
ber an open mind means seeing more than your side. Talk is cheap, but that doesn’t stop you from ranting at work this month. A heart-to-heart discussion will
CANCER (June 22 - July 22) Find time for your favorite hobbies this month. Practice them, and turn them into the art they were intended to be. Need a break? A Libra invites you to do something out of the ordinary. Don’t be afraid to try something new. You will find a new side of yourself when you open up.
LEO (July 23 - August 22)
Put exercise back in your schedule this month, Leo. If discipline’s the problem, solve it with creativity. Why not try something new like karate or yoga? A Scorpio notices your newfound confidence. Do what you do best, Leo. Flaunt it. A work opportunity comes your way.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 23) Your indecision is driving a Cancer at home crazy. You’re not being fair to the crab. Make a list of priorities of things you need, and pursue them. Start putting some responsibility back on yourself and taking the burden off of others. Don’t know where to begin? Communication is key.
CAPRICION (December 22 - January 20)
Letting go has never been your strong point, but your love life is becoming more and more like a full season of TV reruns. Stop playing the “been-there-done-that” role, and start making some new beginnings. Tell your old flame to take a hike.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)
Don’t let holiday stress cloud career goals. That dream job is just beyond your fingertips, but not far beyond your grasp. Do what it takes to make it happen. Be aggressive. Exercise activities are great stress relievers. Try your hand at something new this month.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20)
An upcoming family function could be the cause of stress this month. A compromise will have to be met before feelings are hurt. Give a little, but don’t let yourself get taken advantage of. Children are the focus of the month. A new responsibility carries a lot of weight. Source : beaufort.com

Ten Years in the Tub
York's Legendary Chelsea Hotel
By Nick Hornby
By Sherill Tippins
At the end of 2003, as the first issue of The Believer was rising from the primordial ooze, Nick Hornby turned in the inaugural installment of a monthly column that immediately became a reader favorite. For the next ten years, Hornby’s incandescently funny “Stuff I’ve Been Reading” chronicled a singular reading life — one that is measured not just in “books bought” and “books read” .
The Chelsea Hotel, since its founding by a visionary French architect in 1884, has been an icon of American invention: a cultural dynamo and haven for the counterculture, all in one astonishing building.
Brown Dog:
Novellas
By Jim Harrison New York Times best-selling author Jim Harrison is one of America’s most beloved writers, and of all his creations, Brown Dog, a bawdy, reckless, down-on-his-luck Michigan Indian, has earned cult status with readers in the more than two decades since his first appearance. For the first time, Brown Dog gathers all the Brown Dog novellas, including one never-published one, into one volume—the ideal introduction (or reintroduction) to Harrison’s irresistible Everyman.
Uncharted: Big Data as a Lens on Human Culture By Erez Aiden Our society has gone from writing snippets of information by hand to generating a vast flood of 1s and 0s that record almost every aspect of our lives: who we know, what we do, where we go, what we buy, and who we love. This year, the world will generate 5 zettabytes of data. (That’s a five with twenty-one zeros after it.) Big data is revolutionizing the sciences, transforming the humanities, and renegotiating the boundary between industry and the ivory tower.
The Apartment: A Novel By Greg Baxter One snowy December morning in an old European city, an American man leaves his shabby hotel to meet a local woman who has agreed to help him search for an apartment to rent. THE APARTMENT follows the couple across a blurry, illogical, and frozen city into a past the man is hoping to forget, and leaves them at the doorstep of an uncertain future-their cityscape punctuated by the man's lingering memories of time spent in Iraq and the life he abandoned in the United States.
Jesus: The Human Face of God By Jay Parini Jay Parini brings a life’s worth of contemplation on Jesus to the first volume in ICONS, a series of brief, thought-provoking biographies edited by James Atlas. In Jesus, Parini turns the powerful narrative skill he’s wielded over the course of a four-decade career to a figure who’s dominated our collective imagination and cultural iconography for over twenty centuries. The main trend of modern theology has hinged on the notion of “demythologizing” Jesus.
The Encyclopedia of Early Earth: A Novel By Isabel Greenberg Before our history began, another--now forgotten--civilization thrived. The people who roamed Early Earth were much like us: curious, emotional, funny, ambitious, and vulnerable. In this series of illustrated and linked tales, Isabel Greenberg chronicles the explorations of a young man as he paddles from his home in the North Pole to the South Pole. There, he meets his true love, but their romance is illfated. Early Earth's unusual and finicky polarity means the lovers can never touch.
The Kid: he Immortal Life of Ted Williams By Ben Bradlee Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than 500 home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in WWII and Korea.
