I saw The Avengers a few days ago and thought it was a truly brilliant movie. The last four years of Marvel movies built up to this movie and yet this latest movie completely exceeded my expectations in every way. There are many great moments in it. Deadly Phrases In Business That Can Kill Success Language and emotion play a big role in business success Did you ever stop and think about some of the words and phrases you use in your business communications every day? And did you ever pause and truly think about what message you are conveying with your words and phrases. In today’s conversations, there are many words and phrases spoken without any real sensitivity to the “real message” they convey to the hearer. Many of these seem quite innocent and are probably thought to be inconsequential. Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach believes you would be at a strategic advantage in your business communications if you understand that there are some words and phrases that should be avoided. Here is a list of 8 phrases and Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach antidote to the deadly phrase…
Deadly Phrase 1: “I can’t …” It is almost automatic that when someone hears this phrase, they mentally ask if you mean “can’t” or “won’t” which are both negative. Coach’s Antidote: Ask “How can I …?” and show a willingness to find what you can do.
Deadly Phrase 2: “I don’t care.” Wow – you just sent a powerful apa-
thetic and negative message, which probably will shut down further communications. Coach’s Antidote: Avoid any expression of apathy in your conversation if you want to have an opportunity to do business with someone. Instead, communicate a genuine feeling that you do care.
Deadly Phrase 5: “I will do that later.” When uttering this phrase you
Deadly Phrase 3: “I hate…” It takes way too much energy to hate any-
thing or anybody. Coach’s Antidote: Avoid using these words since it will send a very unflattering image to the person or persons to whom you are speaking. Use positive energy to concentrate on what is being asked of you.
confirm that you are a procrastinator and that you believe that your time is more valuable than that of the other. Coach’s Antidote: Provide a positive response with a commitment to specific time frame for responding to the request or completing the required task.
Deadly Phrase 4: “Whatever!” When you use this word you have
Deadly Phrase 6: “It’s not my problem.” Once again, you have shown a
used one of the most powerful negative single word sentences imaginable. With this one word phrase you have confirmed that you have given up and really no longer care. Coach’s Antidote: Communicate some positive message that addresses the problem or issue at hand and encourage continued effort to find the solution.
lack of concern and respect for another person’s problem, when you utter this phrase. Coach’s Antidote: Be proactive and show leadership by taking ownership of seeing that the problem is resolved by you or with the help of others.
Deadly Phrase 7: It’s not my fault.” This phrase can speak volumes about you avoiding taking any responsibility or being held accountable for actions of yourself and/or others. Coaching Antidote: Exhibit leadership by ensuring accountability. Deadly Phrase 8: “It’s not my job.” This is another phrase that simply conveys a message that you do not take responsibility and like to push it off onto others. Coach’s Antidote: Take responsibility to see that you or someone else do the job.

Forgive But Don’t Forget!
/amar.behbehani @Amar144
Dear Readers... How often do people get hurt? How many times have you allowed yourself to feel pain from a broken heart or promise? How often do you carry this pain around? Don’t your shoulders hurt already? Lift this weight up and forgive but DO NOT FORGET! It has been medically proven that forgiveness actively affects the human wellbeing on multiple levels. In the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, it has been stated that forgiveness directly affects four mechanisms: • Spirituality • Social skills • Reduction in negative affect • Reduction in stress
The online journal of Mayo Clinic also stated that forgiveness causes the person to have: • Healthier relationships • Greater spiritual and psychological well-being • Less anxiety, stress and hostility • Lower blood pressure • Fewer symptoms of depression • Lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse
Life is a process of experiences. And if you live your life to the fullest, it is inevitable that you will face at least one person that you feel angry with. What do you do with this anger? If you carry such emotion with you to another phase in your life, you will eventually face more hurt and anger towards yourself and others. It is your right to embrace emotions and “feel”; however, feelings are meant to be momentary because they are eventually shaped to alternative emotions or outlet. A negative state of emotion, such as anger, is needed when you are hurt because it is the first phase of the experience. But what if this anger doesn’t fade away? Well believe it or not, it is you who is making it last! The cliché solution of all times is to “forgive”!
Step One
Step Two
Define it: Forgiveness is to let go!
Face it: Forgiveness is harder said than done!
The general meaning of forgiveness is to let go of your anger, resentment, revenge, or any negative thoughts towards a person or an entity. These feelings occur because you experienced them and they will always remain a part of your life experience. However, when you decide to leave them behind to proceed with your life, its then that you start to forgive! If you feel no pain towards this person, Its then that you have started to forgive! If you are willing to find the positive in this person, Its then that you have started further to forgive!
June June 2012 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
To forgive is to eventually face your problem! The process of forgiveness is actually harder than feeling angry or disappointed in someone because it is related to the fear of facing oneself with the truth! This truth is your vulnerability, whether it was a positive or negative emotion. After defining what kind of forgiveness you prefer to follow, you need to sit down with yourself and face your feelings towards this person. Facing one’s emotions towards a person does not mean listing down all the negative aspects of this person or the relationship. In fact, facing a problem is the process of creating a balance to your perception so you need to measure both the negative and the positive about a situation. Once you see the positive, only then you can start the process of forgive-
Entertainment / Hollywood Movies
How forgiving are you? ness. Feelings such as anger, resentment, and disappointment are easy to trigger because we are beings who simply feel. If you allow the negative feelings to take over your judgments, there will be no space for the good to rise. Letting go of these feelings and moving on is a long process of discipline, compassion, and most importantly patience.
Step Three Accept it: Forgiveness is accepting one’s feelings of weakness! When you face the feelings you have towards a sorrowful situation, you need to accept the fact that life is a series of fortunate and unfortunate events. Life is not one color; it comes in multiple colors and shades. There is nothing constant in life except for change! Accept the situation you are experiencing by letting yourself fully embrace what you feel Do not fight them, let go and cut yourself some slack and just cry, scream, and express your anger! It is not easy to surrender to your emotions when you feel hurt but you cannot overcome any of them and proceed to forgiveness without accepting them. Your strength lies in the emotional expression.
Step Four Reflect it: Forgiveness is reflecting the facts of the situation! Assessing the overall damage of the situation is very important because it allows you to measure its effect in your life and well being. Write down a list of: 1. What happened? (the story) 2. What did this person/people physically do to me? 3. How did this person/people emotionally hurt me? 4. What did this person/people say to me? 5. Why did I get upset/angry/frustrated? 6. Is it worth my anger? 7. Can I forgive? 8. How can I forgive? 9. State: I will forgive!
Step Five Personalize it: Forgiveness is actively saying, “I forgive you!” You need to actually contact the person who offended you and express the forgiveness. This expression could take any form or shape but you need to take the action of forgiveness because it allows you to physically feel the process. This phase might not come along immediately after facing the situation but it will come when you invite forgiveness in! Invite it in and allow yourself to be stronger than the offender and face them with what they did and state: I forgive you! Confronting the offender or the person who hurt you does not necessarily mean you are cutting this person out of your life and it also does not mean that you are allowing this person in again. The existence of this person is totally up to you...and you alone! Do not underestimate yourself and do not think that expressing one’s feelings is weakness. The strength is taking a step forward to a better rising future.
Step Six Forgive but Don’t Forget! Let go of the sorrows so they will not haunt your life and affect your wellbeing. But do not let go of the experience that made you a stronger person and heightened being. Elevate the logic in you and use this process as a learning experience rather than a black cloud that is empty of rain. Only you can help yourself reach the peace within. And remember, expression is never a weakness; it is the strongest attribute of humanity! The great Mahatma Gandhi once said: “the weak can never forgive; forgiveness is the attribute of the strong”. Thank you for those who hurt me but made me stronger...I forgive you!

Time saving Tips for business Start ups As for larger organisations, understanding the importance of Social Media for engaging with their customers has a simple response - employ a dedicated Social Media Officer! However, for small businesses such as sole traders where one person fits all roles, time saving is essential.
T
o join the conversation when you are already feeling time stretched, use this brilliant social media traffic light concept...and where should you begin?
1. Traffic Lighting - This is a concept I have been drumming into the vast majority of my clients of late. The World of social media can seem overwhelming, so it is important to drill down to where you have a presence?, what you do on there ?, why rather than rashly signing up to every site going and leaving them lacklustre?. Taking a step back to research and consider where your customers are hanging out online and what strategy you can employ to reach them is essential. When you have given yourself this head space you will be able to consider which social media site is:
GREEN - the one where your customers hang out most, and makes most sense to your marketing strategy. Green = Go! This is the site you should start with. Commit some time to updating it regularly and read also how other businesses are using this channel for marketing.
AMBER - these are the social media tools that could add value to your marketing, but should be considered as your business progresses and when you find you have some extra time to commit. June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
RED - Avoid these at a start-up stage. These may be sites you could justify to yourself using as marketing tools, but they are not an immediate priority. Ditch them for now and put them in your business plan under ‘growth strategy’.
nels. Simple!
2. Automate Activity - If you can’t
Every business needs marketing, so think of it as swapping the time you would have spent on another part of offline marketing rather than an extra chore. And if it all becomes too much, consider using the services of a freelancer until you grow big enough to have dedicated marketing staff.
be online daily, don’t let your social media channels die a death just as you have got them going. Use a tool like Tweetdeck, or my personal favourite 'hootsuite'. With these tools you can log in when you get chance and schedule messages to go out through your social media channels at a selected time and date. You can also link your social media activity together using tools like Networked blogs, or the Twitter and Facebook apps on the respective sites. A small warning here though - it’s important to not automate ALL of your activity. It’s called ‘social’ media for a reason, so make sure you commit at least some time to live interaction.
3. Finding Content at Your Fingertips - Google Alerts is absolutely
your best friend for narrowing down hours of thinking through “what on earth can I post about”. Set up Google alerts for key words and phrases around your industry to receive daily, weekly, or ‘as it happens’ updates showing new web content on the topic. Then follow these links to use them as posts you can comment on via your social media chan-
Whatever you decide to do to save time, don’t go for the “I’ll just leave it altogether” option. If your business hasn’t got a social media strategy it is going to be left behind - fact!
I believe this will help many small businesses , and start up individuals with tips and tools needed. Stay tuned for next month's article and coverage of the first Arabian Social media conference .

I
am a simple person who adores positivity and believes that art inspires one to be lively and happy. I started painting in 2001 with a mindset of infusing this positive energy in my drawings and paintings. I began with using oil paint as my medium for the first two art pieces. I then discovered, that using acrylic paint works best for me, as it enables me to express my inspirations with more spontaneity. Using this medium I have completed 30 paintings so far.
During the past decade, I have accumulated all my artwork in my studio and have dedicated a few paintings to friends and family members. But its only quite recently that I participated in a private exhibition. At present, I also have a website called www.afafart.wordpress.com where I showcase my previous paintings along with newer ones. I express my vision in the form of, what is today called, abstract art. Ever since I was a young girl, I loved to draw images of the eye, the heart, flowers and the crescent moon, as they each inspired me in numerous ways. For me, the eye represents life and feelings, the heart is symbolic of love and passion, the flowers represent a great sense of happiness, and lastly the crescent moon is the positive energy that I believe flows through me. My appreciation and attachment to these symbols is evident in all my artwork. Earlier this year, I attended Central St. Martins College in London where, I studied drawing. I have never taken an official drawing class before and loved the new exposure that I received here. Since then, I have become more ex-

perimental in my newer works, which, although continue to depict the four symbols that inspire me, are articulated using new techniques. It is critical for not only artists but also connoiseurs of art to familiarize themselves to various forms of art. I ensure that I attend exhibitions, both in Kuwait and abroad to broaden my knowledge in upcoming art forms. Such exhibitions are showcased and curated in various venues including museums, auctions houses, art galleries, and in several cases, in an artist's studio. I believe that being open to new ideas and artwork enables me to progress and to evolve as an artist. Painting allows one to acquire several characteristics such as patience. It is a form of meditation for me and as I paint, I reflect my thoughts into my strokes. Each artwork is unique as it speaks of a different story
and experience based on what I was contemplating whilst painting. My paintings are spread out around my studio and I feel that the more time I spend looking at them and reflecting, the more I feel motivated to paint. I feel joyous and am passionate about what I do. Paint and the brush itself has become a tool that empowers me and allows me to express such passion. It is the tool that I use, by splashing out lively colours, to portray positive energy and love. The art society in Kuwait is large and growing significantly. I believe that Kuwaitis appreciate fine arts and love to discover contemporary art. It is great that The City magazine is encouraging fine arts and local artists. I think the magazine is doing a great job in giving a voice to the art community and I wish the magazine all the very best for its future.

OYSTER DIVING CENTER
A 100% Kuwaiti project
I
n a recent movie that I watched about Scuba diving and deep-sea diving, I saw a whole new beautiful world of underwater flora and fauna revealed to us. Although I knew that diving was hobby for a lot of people, I never pondered about why it was so. Least of all, never did I think that I would myself indulge in the sport of diving until I visited the Oyster Diving Center. This is a Kuwaiti project that promises to take you into an amazing journey away from life’s stress to awesome places underwater. My visit to Oyster Diving Center started with an introduction to the crew and I was extremely glad that there was a female instructor also with them by the name of Ms. Athoob. She helped me wear the diving suit and also put on the diving equipment. We then got into the water of the pool at Safir International Hotel as that is where Oyster Diving Center does their training. Then Mr. Bader, the instructor, gave me breathing instructions, taught me how to feel comfortable in the water and gave me details of different aspects of diving while Ms. Athoob & Mr. Khaled were watching after me. Mr. Ahmed along with the trainers was inside the water and three other instructors were observing us from outside the water. Thus, although I was a little jittery at first, their presence made me feel very safe. It is only now, after my session at the Oyster Diving Center, that I have realized why divers really love what they do. During the lesson, my mind wasn't thinking of anything but diving, breathing & enjoying. After my diving session, I discovered that I felt totally relaxed, calm and refreshed like I have never felt before. I have decided to take further lessons with Oyster Diving Center in order to be ready to dive in the sea to enjoy the great splendor of the underwater world that the instructors described to me. The picture they painted of it in my mind was like a piece of art, Subhaan Allah! I would like to thank the crew here for the special experience that they gave me. I would advice everyone to try out the brilliant sport of diving at Oyster Diving Center. They do weekly sessions of diving training and tourist trips heading to the Kuwait islands. I am so proud to have come across this 100% Kuwaiti project, where a person can discover a wonderful healthy hobby and spend valuable time amidst nature’s splendor.

23 What would be the first thing you would like readers to know about Oyster Diving Center and its activities? Kuwaiti people created a unique mutual relationship with the sea, a relation that spans from the past to our present day. A relation in which the sea gave everything to the people and it’s only fit that the people gave something back. And that’s exactly what we at the “Oyster Diving Center” are set to accomplish, giving something back to the sea by achieving our ultimate goal: encouraging eco-tourism through education and training, and help people appreciate everything the sea has to offer. Dedicated divers could discover the wonder of Kuwait’s seabed on a special refurbished boat to accommodate their needs. We also offer Try Scuba for people who don’t possess a diving license to enjoy and experience diving for the first time, so they can explore some of the underwater glory. Who are the founders of Oyster Diving Center ? Instructor - Bader Al-Marzouq, Instructor/ Alaa Bughaith, Instructor/ Ahmed Al-Ansari How many instructor do you have? Six certified active instructors and Ten Instructor’s assistants. How did the idea come & who supported you to do it? The idea of establishing Oyster Diving Center came when we realized the poor engagement with marine tourism in Kuwait and we noticed that the country needed that kind of activity to explore this area in a creative and unique way. So that is how we initially worked out this entrepreneurial idea where we could encourage people to have fun and education at the same time. Many companies supported Oyster Diving Center, and the most famous one of these has been Safir Hotel & Residences – Al Fintas. The main goal for those companies is to encourage the marine tourism in Kuwait to have these wonderfully unique facilities and services. What are the difficulties that you faced in your start & what are the challenges you are facing now? We are facing many difficulties right from the beginning of this project. However, those difficulties are not unusual in any new business especially marine projects, but those difficulties do not stop us. Instead, it keeps us on the undaunted on the same road and makes us more determined. There are certain procedures we do to get rid of these dif-
ficulties as an act of instantaneous periodic maintenance for our equipments and boats to avoid the faults they undergo. For any emergency it is necessary for the existence of an alternative contingency plan while the occurrence of any emergency, especially in the sea. How many persons are in the class ? We, at Oyster Diving Center, have a policy of training. One of those policies is to care about safety and quality and not quantity. So we don’t exceed 10 trainees in the same class, but we have many classes at the same time with different instructors. How long does it takes for someone to learn how to dive ? It depends from person to person, but the average is one week for the Beginner’s course (Scuba divers course). Don’t you fear the risks that come along with diving? Is it safe? Everything in our life has a risk if we practice it in the wrong way and we do not follow the rules. Scuba diving, like any other sport, has rules and regulations that we have to follow, and when any person attends the course, the safety procedures are applied and taught during the training. “Dive Safety through Education” is the main motto for NAUI (NATIONAL ASSOSIATION OF UNDERWATER INSTRUCTORS). Follow safety rules and the risk will reduce.
share you the profits. What do you think of this idea? It is a great idea because Oyster Diving Center has been established to support Kuwait by encouraging the marine tourism here. The profits are the last thing we think about. Any thing you want to add ? Many people are afraid of the sea, and this fear is the result of ignorance and lack of sufficient knowledge of marine science and its prisoners to the sea that we call upon them to discover the underwater world through education in safely and professional way. Kuwait marine environment is beautiful, try to save it from pollutants. Your MSG for theCity magazine? You are Great
How many classes do you have and where are these held? What are the suitable timings during different parts of the year and how can people contact you to register for these classes? Do you have any seasonal special rates or discounts? It depends on the registration of trainees. Sometimes we have one class and sometimes we have many classes at the same time. But all our classes are held in the evening. We have courses throughout the year. We have special rates and discounts for our trips and course but it is not seasonal. It is different from time to time. But anyone can follow our special rates in our accounts in twitter and facebook. What are your future plans ? We hope to attract the largest number of tourists to stimulate marine tourism and diving tourism in Kuwait, especially from neighboring countries. If I were the minister of tourism, I would have given Oyster Diving Center a special place with a big pool to train and make the country

Hello wonderful readers! In this issue we will talk more about what we do, so you guys can get to know us better.. Here we go!
I
t was two years ago, in 2010, that we came up with the brand "The Jeem" which is our very own clothing line. At that time, we were about to have our graduation ceremony and the dress code for the event was white. We went around town scouting for a white dress, but couldn't find any which would suit us. So we decided to design our own dresses and it turned out exactly like we had visualized it to be. Having many people giving us a positive feedback and compliments on our design encouraged us to design more. So its basically what we love to do- turning our sketches into actual clothes. We really enjoy doing that because we love creating new statement pieces that represent us and reflect who we are. We always aim at and work on creating pieces that stand out and are unique, something that is different from all the apparels by the various brands in the market today. Starting our clothing line wasn't very easy, and yet not very hard either. Initially, we had difficulties with choosing materials and finding the perfect fabric for the pieces we were designing as it was the first time that we were dealing with materials. But all the support and positivity we received from our surroundings made the path easier for us, especially the support of the most amazing woman on earth for us- our lovely
mother. The best experience while learning about materials and fabrics was the time we attended the London Fashion School courses in Dubai. It helped us a lot in choosing the perfect kind of fabric that suited our designs. Ofcourse, we couldn’t have managed without our amazing Aunt Ranoosh, who took us on that trip.We are eternally thankful to her. Having to choose between our designing time and our school schedule, though a dilemma, is not that hard because obviously school has always been our first priority. Mostly, we work on weekends and during our holidays since its the time when we can completely set our mind free and work on what we love the most. We would like to suggest to everyone who is reading this that if you want to start your own business, go for it and don’t quit! Turn your dreams into a reality because, well, is there anything better than living your dream? Aim carefully and shoot right. Chao readers! Catch us up on our upcoming issues xoxo June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net

Profit Sharing:
Is it Right for Your Company? Profit sharing is a good way of making your employees feel they're valued partners in the company, improving employee loyalty and retention, increasing productivity and profit, and building a company culture that's based on teamwork as well as personal accountability. Sharing your profits makes employees feel like they're not 'just employees' and encourages them to work harder towards the end-goal of achieving profitability. It also makes them take an interest in the achievements of the company, and encourages them to understand how the business makes and loses money. Most of the companies today have a profit sharing program in place. Before you add your company to this group, take a look at some of the key points you need to consider when setting up a profit sharing plan:
Not all profit sharing programs are alike. You can make your program as simple as a universal plan or as complicated as a multi-tiered program with unique targets and reward levels for each department and individual. For small businesses, universal profit sharing is recommended, in which a business owner sets aside a portion of the profit to share among all employees - providing targets are met, of course. It's a good idea to announce up front what the profit target is and what portion of this target will be shared with employees. You should also specify right at the start how it will be shared - equally, pro-rated based on the number of days you worked that year, or percentage of base pay. Sharing profits also means sharing financial information with employees. However, this doesn't mean that you will have to lay all your books on the table. Typically, employees will want to know what percentage of the company's operating budget goes towards salaries, and how much is spent on rent, advertising, office supplies, and janitorial services.
A clear and realistic financial goal, a system for performance tracking and achieving profitability are a must. Give your em-
ployees a target and let them know, on a month-to-month basis, how the company is performing against this target. But don't just throw out numbers and bar graphs; instead provide an analysis of the results.
How can employees make a difference? Spell it out. For a profit
sharing program to be effective, employees need to know how their actions - individually and as a team - affect the bottom line. Let your accounts receivables clerk know that invoices sent out on time would mean less dipping into the commercial line of credit. Show your customer service representative how many accounts were lost last year because a complaint wasn't answered or resolved quickly enough. When your monthly profit results come in, call a meeting to explain the key factors that detracted or contributed to your performance and discuss what each employee can do to improve results.
So what if your company fails to make a profit this year? Could profit sharing turn from an incentive program to a cause for disgruntlement? Employees will be disappointed if you don't turn a profit. But they'll strive even harder next year to make a profit for you. How you communicate the year's results can make a big difference in how your employees' react to the bad news. Take the time to explain why and where things went wrong and what can be done to turn things around in the coming year. But take care not to point the finger of blame towards any specific individual or department.

It is this organization that governs the various laws that govern the import and export of various commodities. In knowing more about the organization therefore, the businessmen especially those that conduct their business globally are able to observe the various laws set and also are able to benefit from the various agreements that are negotiated in this organization. The businessmen can also know how and where to take their trade disputes if any arise. Knowing the existence of this organization also enables the businessmen to air their views on how they would want the world trade to be conducted.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the World Trade Organization has helped in development of the world trade by providing and enhancing fair rules when conducting trade. It has also provided an avenue through which various disputes in the world trade can be solved amicably. The organization should therefore be supported by every nation and the countries that have not yet joined it, should do so.

The Secret of Visualization
@marsvenuskuwait
“To accomplish great things we must first dream, then visualize, then plan... believe... act!” --- Alfred A. Montapert
Dear readers, it’s so nice to connect with you once again! Summer is here in Kuwait and it is the season of graduation and success, congratulations to all! This month I would like to address the subject of achieving success. Do you want success? Do you have a plan to achieve life and/or business success? Do you know what you want? Do you know what it looks like? Do you know what it is going to feel like when you achieve it? Have you imagined yourself actually accomplishing your dream? If you answered yes to all of these questions, I congratulate you. If you answered no to any one of the questions, you have come to the right place! As a life and business success coach, many clients come to me yearning for success in their lives. I tell them, success requires a dream and a personal vision attached to it, followed by a plan and a follow through with action and hard work. You really have to know where you are going, to begin to move in that direction. Movement without a clear goal produces muddled action and a waste of time and resources. On the path to success, there is one step that is usually missed or skipped and this is what I would like to discuss with you today -Visualization. One of the most important steps in achieving success is knowing what success looks like, feels like, and tastes like, to you. For example, if you want to be wealthy, what does wealth mean to you? Do you want thousands or millions or more? Imagine your bank statement with the account balance you want to achieve. What will it feel like to be rich? What will you wear? What will you drive? How will you live? How will you feel? Going through this process is vital. Oftentimes, we may want something in our conscious mind but subconsciously, we are not ready to receive it. This is a result of limiting beliefs deep down in our psyche which do not allow us to go beyond a limited frame resulting with the true reality of our potential becoming masked. Remember, perception always precedes reality. Many of you have heard, embraced, and implemented the teachings of “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. Time and time again “The Secret” illustrates the power of the law of attraction. Michael S. Clouse says, “If June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
you can see it in your mind, you can experience it in your life”. Similarly, visualization uses your imagination and mind to create pictures and visual images of what you strive to achieve in your lives. So, if what you think about, you bring about, visualization is the best tool to attract the life you want. Looking at this from a scientific point of view, our subconscious mind is controlling our future condition, be it successful or not. Interestingly, the subconscious state only responds to images and emotions. Think about that for a second. What images are you repeating in your mind over and over again? Are they positive images or not? What about the feelings you associate with these images? Are your emotions positive or not? Visualization is an emotional process. When visualizing you must feel happiness and excitement as you attach your images to the experience. Without any feelings associated with the vision, it just isn’t quite as effective. For those of you less familiar with visualizations and have never performed this process, please allow me to guide you with the basic steps. 1. Find a suitable location to perform your visualization. Choose a calm, quiet place where you can relax for a few minutes. Make sure you have a comfortable seat and the lighting is not too bright as you will need to be in a state of relaxation. 2. Close your eyes or focus on an inanimate object. Slow down your breathing by taking long deep breaths for a few minutes until you feel truly relaxed. As you have
relaxed, do not control your breathing but just observe your breathing pattern. 3. Start visualizing by focusing on the end result. Focus on what goal you want to achieve. Remember that details are very important. Color of your clothes, the smell of the air, the taste of what you are eating, the feel of the sun or coolness of the breeze. 4. Attach a positive emotional state to the images and vision you create. Embrace the feelings of success. Feel the joy and happiness of achieving your goal. Make your heart jump at the sight of achieving what you truly want and let this felling of happiness envelop you. 5. Create your visualization in the first person. Your vision must be from your viewpoint and not as a person would see you, as in a movie. This is where true feelings appear, as you are the one who is experiencing the moment of success. 6. Allocate the correct amount of time for visualization. Timings for this process vary from person to person. Some experts suggest a time equivalent to your age so, if you are 30 years old, you should visualize for half an hour. I recommend trying it out and getting a feel for a span of time that you are comfortable with in the beginning. Then, slowly, move towards the suggested timing. If you start with 10 to 30 minutes every day or every other day for visualizing your goal this should be sufficient. If you are having difficulty visualizing, you may want to use a vision board. John Assaraf champions the
use of vision boards and has proven their effectiveness. This method is particularly effective in assisting those with lesser experience in visualization by allowing them to create images and emotions of what they would like to achieve. The steps to creating a vision board are very simple. First cut out pictures from magazines, photos, etc, ... associated with the life you want or the goals you would like to achieve. Take these pictures and assemble them together on a board in a collage. Make sure to place the board somewhere you can easily see and access to enable you to observe it during the visualization process. The vision board is an excellent tool in evoking emotional responses and assisting you in the visualization process. Dear readers, visualization is a very powerful tool but it is only one part of the success process. Planning and implementation must parallel your visualizations. Jim Carrey shares his viewpoint on the subject by saying, "Visualization works, if you work hard." The power of visualization is great and is a vital step to putting you in the right frame of mind by creating a deep belief to allow you to achieve your dream. I wish you the best of luck in creating visions of your amazing future. If you would like more insight surrounding this subject, please feel free to contact me with your questions, queries, stories, or comments. I would love to hear from you!

Business
Marketing When Things Go Wrong
Sumayah Al-Jasim Sumayah@thecitymagazine.net
One of the most challenging parts of running a business is handling service failures; which are situations where things go wrong with customers. Service failures can be a result of human errors as well as process gaps. This occurs on a daily basis across all types of businesses, from a small home bakery to largescale banks. Let me start by sharing with you some service failure experiences here in Kuwait.
Food Delivery
You are very hungry and ordered a meal for delivery. You have waited for over an hour, even though you were told it will take a maximum of 45 minutes. The food finally arrives;you pay and rush to the table to start eating. You take the first bite and realize,“This is not the sandwich I ordered!” You stop eating and callback the restaurant. You explain to them what happened, and they tell you,“We are sorry, the orders have been mixed up.” Your order was delivered to another house!
Credit Card Billing
You receive a notification on your phone for a credit card billing of 300KD in Greece, but you have never even been to Greece. You call the bank to complain, and they tell you that you have to come to the branch in person to file a complaint.
Hairstyle
You are at a hairdresser's place getting your hair done for a friend’s wedding. When the hairstyle is finally done, you don’t like it. You tell the hairdresser that you don’t like it, and she’s offended and becomes very defensive and refuses to make any adjustments.
Wrong K-net Charge
You were paying for a purchase of KD 35.500 with K-net.You enter your pin number and the payment is processed. Then, you get an SMS notification informing you that the deduction was KD 3,550 instead of KD 35.500!
Dessert for Gathering
You have a gathering. Your guests have arrived. You keep calling the bakery where you ordered dessert and ask them why the order is late. They
keep telling you “it’s on the way”, but it comes three hours late. You had to apologize to your guests and it was embarrassing.
Traveling with Credit Card
You are travelling and were about to buy something worth KD 110. Your credit card is declined. You are sure it has balance; this is the first time you are using it on this trip. You try it a couple of times and it’s declined. You go to the ATM machine and try to withdraw cash. After a couple of attempts the machine withdraws the card. No cash for you. You make an international call to the bank to solve your problem. You keep waiting on the line, until they tell you we have filed a complaint and we will get back to you soon.
Pricing at a Saloon
You did a simple hairstyle at a saloon for KD 15. You liked it, and came back again to do the same hair style for another event. This time they charged you KD 35. You were very upset, paid the KD 35 and filed a complaint. After a couple of days, the receptionist calls you to tell you,“We told the owner about the issue, and the owner said the price is KD 35. And it’s okay, we will not ask you to pay for the first time when you were only charged KD 15.” All the experiences described above are different forms of service failures. They all result with disappointed and inconvenienced customers. They require the customer to take action or file a complaint. Of course, the severity differs from the wrong sandwich to the credit card issue. However, in all these cases, I can tell you that the customer only needs three elements to be addressed. If these elements are addressed correctly, the customer is likely to recover from the disappointment and may talk positively about the business in the future.
1. Fairness in Procedures and Process This means customer looks for a comfortable and fair procedure to resolve
the issue. The customer wants to solve the problem easily, and with a minimum number of people to talk to. DON’T: Common mistakes of businesses here is that the customer waits for a long time, and ends up talking to the employee, the manager, and then possibly a third person. Furthermore, the problem is not even resolved at this level. The customer also has to do follow up calls, or worse the customer is asked to visit the store or branch in person. Don’t let the complaint stretch over a long period of time and don’t ask the customer to repeat him/herself. DO:Ensure that the first contact point the customer talks to about the problem can capture the complaint and writes the important details. Make it easy for the customer to reach the contact staff, and minimize the waiting time. Set up what-if scenarios with the front facing staff that addresses the most common service failures before they happen. Set up a quick process of verification and resolution of the incident. Ensure that a proactive follow up on the customer is done with relevant updates, if needed.
2. Fairness in Interaction
This means that the customer evaluates and assesses the cooperativeness and attitude of the business’s staff that he or she is dealing with in these service failures. DON’T: Be defensive or try to blame the customer for his part in the problem. Don’t show that you don’t care. Don’t hide behind policies. Don’t give a customer a dead-end response such as “sorry there is nothing we can do”. Don't expect the customer to come up with the solutions. DO: Show customers that you care about their problem by listening to them and giving them space to explain. Show sincere apologies. Show a helpful attitude and assure customer that the issue will be addressed promptly. Be honest. Assure the customer that the service failure will not happen again.
3. Fairness in End Result:
This simply means that the customer wants a fair end result to his or her situation. What will happen in the end? DON’T: Ignore the service failure, and leave the customer without closure on the issue. Don’t let the customer incur costs of the service failure. DO: There are many options depending on the business and situation. The goal is to offer something that will make the customer feel that he or she received a fair compensation. The customer wants to feel that the business took the responsibility for the service failure. For example,in the wrong sandwich incident, the customer would appreciate it if he or shewere offered a complementary sandwich for the next order. In the case of wrong K-net charge, the store could offer the customer a discount on their next purchase. The saloon that priced the hairstyle KD 15 and then KD 35 could have offered the customer an adjustment to the payment from KD 35 to 15 KD, and kindly inform the customer of the new price for the future. There are a number of ways that businesses can recover from service failures, the key is to focus on something that will make the customer consider coming back again. In Kuwait, many times I have seenservice failures were either ignored or considered as operations and customer service issues only. They are handled reactively and do not address the three areas of fairness that are really most important to the customer. To succeed businesses need to train the staff on how to handle service failures, listen to the customer, acknowledge the complaints, and do something about it. Service recovery should be proactively done by businesses from a marketing perspective. Setting the proper processes that address the fairness in procedures, interaction and end result. By doing that businesses increase their customer satisfaction, and thus have a higher number of returning customers despite the bad experience they might have encountered.

Lighting
L
ighting is one of the most powerful elements in any given interior space. Ordinary spaces can be transformed into extra ordinary one, full of drama and contrast with the added ingredient of light. This element can be manipulated to brighten or dim, highlight or obscure, or to simply create planes of shadow and color. Light can alter the ambience of a room merely by the switch of a button. While in one moment a room can be lit, bright and functional for studying, in another moment, the light can be dimmed to offer an intimate space. Lighting is usually the one aspect of design that is usually forgotten whilst planning a space, although it should be treated as a priority. Lighting is considered to be tangible with a synaesthetic quality, something we can feel like a fabric or stone. Thus, It is crucial to understand that a little prior planning in this area can do wonders to any place. First think of the space you are designing and ask yourself: how do you plan to use it? When will you use it and what is the mood you wish to create? Next, think about the colors you want to use, the choice of furnishing and finishing; and finally the finer details. To succesfuly light any interior space one needs to understand the tools at their disposal. Though there are no fixed rules it is helpful to divide lighting into different elements and to know which tool is best for each purpose. Each lighting type gives its own character to a space and can be adjusted depending on whether it is day or night.
@pa_ia
a favourite piece of furniture. Local rather than general, this type of lighting acts as an additional layer to your lighting scheme, accentuating and enhancing the space without upsetting the balance. Finally we have Task lighting which is designed for specific need, such as reading or food preparation. It provides a strong localized light with its source usually hidden from view to avoid a harsh glare. Task lights should be controlled separately, leaving you free to adjust the general and feature lighting to suit your mood. We can sum up the types of lighting tools to about six main tools: down lights, up lights, wall washers, hidden lighting, color and control. You can think of them in terms of inspiring effects they can produces. 1- Down lights are usually recessed into ceilings. As the name suggests they direct lights downwards emphasizing whatever lies in their path. 2- Uplights wash the ceiling with light which is then reflected back
into the room in diffused form. These kinds of lighting create a great sense of height if the ceiling is light in color, but if the ceiling is dark the amount of reflected light will be minimal. They need to be above eye level to avoid glare. 3- Wallwashers are designed to cast light evenly across and down a wall. Wall washers provide a gentle diffused light if fitted with a frosted lens. Wall washers can also become a dynamic source of feature lighting when used with a narrow beam. These types of light are mostly used to emphasize surface textures such as a brick wall. 4- Hidden lighting or what is also known as recessed lighting is usually used to define levels in a ceiling. They are also used in walls and floors when one wants to define a space or a plane. 5- Artificial lighting comes in different colors and tones. It comes in crispy white, a cool white, warm or as we call it day light and even in yellow. Of course they
also come in all the colors of the rainbow but we are now talking about regular lighting. The choice of light color will always affect the colors you have in a space therefore it is always recommended to take the samples of fabric, wood and finishing in the room before finalizing the choice of color. 6- The final tool in any lighting is control. It is always better to plan your lighting and have your lighting system separated onto different circuits so that each element can be individually controlled. Control is the element that would create both atmosphere and change it with a push of a button by transforming a bright room into a dramatic room. With the tools now at your disposal the simplest space can be easily transformed to be infused with richness and depth. With lighting, dimension is enhanced, structures highlighted, textures exposed and focal point emphasized.
There are three basic types of lights. General lighting which provides an overall brightness. This kind of light is extremely versatile and important for every day use. Placing it on a dimmer will add a flexible element to it. Secondly, we have feature or accent lighting which creates the highlights. it directs the attention to focal points in a space such as June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net

World’s largest outdoor pool The Crystal Lagoon, located at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo, Chile, is the world’s largest outdoor pool, stretching more than half of a mile and filled with 66 million gallons of water. The world’s largest pool which cost $1bn and holds 66m gallons is so big you can even sail boats on it. What more it comes with its own fake beach!
Swimming a length in this, the world’s largest outdoor pool, would mean stroke after stroke for more than three fifths of a mile - that’s 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. It also hold's the Guinness record for the world’s deepest - so if you don’t feel like diving 115ft to the bottom, it might be best to bring some spare goggles. The pool opened in December 2006 after nearly five years of construction work and is said to have set developers back by as much as £1billion.
CRYSTAL LAGOON IN NUMBERS
• Capacity: 66 million gallons • Length:3,323ft • Area: 20 acres • Depth: Up to 115ft • Temperature: heated to 26C • Estimated cost of construction: £1billion • Cost of upkeep: £2million a year • Construction time: Almost five years • Completed: December 2006 • The competition: More than twice the length of the next biggest outdoor pool
On top of that eye-watering initial cost, it takes a further £2million a year to maintain it. It uses a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to suck water in from the ocean at one end and pump it out at the other, while the sun warms it to 26C - nine degrees higher than the sea. The pool’s incredible dimensions leave the second largest pool floundering in its wake, with the Orthlieb in Morocco measuring a mere 1,575ft long. Apart from its large size, the lagoon has another spectacular feature: its waters have the transparency and intense turquoise color of tropical seas. This has been made possible thanks to an advanced technology developed by the Chilean company Crystal Lagoons, which uses water pumped from the Pacific Ocean, that is then filtered and treated for supply to the pool, built at the cost of US$3.5 million whilst the maintenance costs are said to be 1/4th of those associated to a professional golf course. Wild Animals as Pets; I Think Not Wild animals being presented as gifts to royalty has a long history in the Arab World. Amirs and Kings have always possessed private collections and many zoos in the area began with donations from these very collections. Unfortunately, in the recent past, we have seen a growing trend of wild animals being kept as pets by citizens of this country. It is an extremely disturbing and dangerous trend, not to mention very unethical.
I
n addition to pet ownership on the rise in Kuwait, wild animal ownership is too. On any day of the week, one can spot a young man racing down the Gulf Road on his motorcycle with a monkey on his back, or someone
walking their cheetah on a leash along the seaside. Not only are these actions highly dangerous, but they question the moral fabric of our society. In December 2009, I got a call from the Royal Animal Hospital stating that an individual had come in with 3 newborn Striped Hyenas. I quickly learned that these babies were stolen from a den in Yemen, sold illegally in Saudi Arabia then smuggled across the border into Kuwait. When asked what his intentions were of owning these hyenas, he said he wanted to June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
cross breed them with dogs and sell them. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. What has happened to our culture and our values that someone would think this is alright? Fortunately or unfortunately for these hyenas,
this man did not know how to care for them and by the time he brought them into the veterinary clinic, they were severely dehydrated and hypothermic and he could not afford the necessary medical treatment. I was able to talk him into surrendering the poor creatures. One cub died at the clinic before he had an opportunity to reach my house but the two little girls arrived within a couple hours. One cub did not survive the night but the last little one let us know with her extremely loud call for milk that she was not giving up and she
fought for her life. After a couple days when it was apparent she was going to survive, we decided to name her. After some thought, we named her “Ayana” which means beautiful flower in Swahili. If you have set eyes on a Striped Hyena, you know that beautiful isn’t really an apt description of their physical appearance but her spirit was exactly that. Ayana stayed in our home for 4 months while we bottle fed her, cared for her and loved her. We watched her personality bloom as she discovered how strong her jaws were, how loud her voice was and that it was great fun to hide under the grill cover by the back door and scare the life out of people as they walked by. Although Ayana was completely imprinted on humans having been hand raised by one, socially raised by
a pack of 5 dogs (she even sat on command for a treat and walked on leash) as she reached her 3 month birthday, it was clear that despite all our love, this animal was quickly becoming unsafe to be kept in a home. Her predatory drive would kick in when she saw my toddler move, her play bite was becoming increasingly more painful breaking skin and she was less and less willing to take direction from humans. We worked quickly to find her suitable placement and she was moved to the Al-Ain Wildlife Park at the age of 4 months. Why do I tell this story? I tell it because I know what it is like to live with a wild animal. Although she saw me as her mother, and was raised and loved like any of my dogs, she wasn’t. She didn’t belong with us and it was cruel and immoral to keep her.
Feature
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst 2. Freedom from Discomfort 3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease 4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior 5. Freedom from Fear and Distress
food, water and vet care to their animal, that does not translate into responsible ownership or a happy animal. This is the case of all the big cats that we see being kept as pets in Kuwait. As an animal behaviorist and a person that does not anthropomorphize an animal’s needs and emotions, I know that every single one of them is suffering and most are in silent agony.
Although I could afford Ayana most of the freedoms, there was one freedom lacking and that is the fourth; freedom to express normal behavior. Ayana could never act like a normal Hyena in my home and that meant I was not affording her adequate
In addition to the suffering that these animals endure, keeping wild animals as pets is dangerous. It is not possible to domesticate a wild animal by loving it as I experienced with Ayana and they will always retain their wild behavior and strength.
In animal welfare we refer to the five freedoms when referring to an animal having adequate quality of life. And they are:
quality of life. This is the case for all wild animals being kept as pets. Taking a wild animal out of its natural habitat and putting it into an alien environment such as our homes, means we are causing unjust suffering to that animal, plain and simple. In addition to wild animal pets not being able to express normal behavior, they are often suffering discomfort from inadequate housing and are experiencing fear and distress mentioned in freedoms two and five. Just because one provides
They are capable of expressing these behaviors at any time especially when feeling fear and distress. This was exemplified by Travis, the Chimpanzee, that was adopted at 3 days old and kept as a pet for 14 years. Although treated like a member of the family, Travis suddenly attacked a friend of the family causing her severe injury. Despite chimpanzees being highly intelligent creatures and with all the love in the world, in a certain situation, this animal could not control his natural impulses as a wild animal. Although this story
was front page news only 3 years ago, we still see parents buying Baboons to play with their children. Baboons are amongst the most aggressive monkeys and are extremely dangerous. This could happen to any of us or our children! The immorality runs even deeper. Most wild animals are poached out of the wild when they are merely days old. Their mothers often have to be killed to take these animals since they will protect their babies to the bitter end. If they are not killed and instead a den is raided when the mother is out looking for food, you mothers out there please take a moment to imagine the
emotional anguish these mothers experience when they come back and find their babies gone. We know that animals are sentient beings and you only have to watch a mother dog protect her pups to know that their maternal instinct is extremely strong. The idea that we would torture an animal for our personal gratification is sickening and tells of the ills in our society. And finally, many of these species are endangered. The Cheetah is one such species and with each one we steal out of
the wild translates into one less animal that can possibly breed to help the species survive. Our acts are destroying the environment around us and we will suffer in turn. In addition to the dangers of their behavior, certain wild animals are vectors for extremely dangerous diseases. Baboons are a prime example. Baboons are stolen from their mothers in Tayef, Saudi Arabia, smuggled into Kuwait then sold at the Friday Market as cute pets. But they are a far cry from that. Not only are they highly aggressive and dangerous behaviorally, they also carry Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and HIV; all very dangerous and often fatal diseases. Macaques are carriers of Herpes B virus, also a very serious disease. All monkeys are vectors for Measles, Rabies, Tuberculosis and bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter, internal and external parasites and fungal infections such as ring worm. Because I loved Ayana and I put her quality of life before my emotions, I had to let her go. If you are someone who likes animals, you would do the same by prioritizing the needs of the animal – wild or companion – before selfish human desires. There are other steps you can take to protect wildlife. Discourage friends and relatives from bringing home a wild animal as a pet. Encourage those who already have one to reflect upon the animal’s quality of life vis-àvis the five freedoms and to make a responsible decision by finding it a better home in a sanctuary for instance. Find out which animal and bird species are classified as wildlife, endangered or on the verge of extinction as per the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES); help to put an end to their smuggling and illegal trade by not purchasing such animals as pets from any source within or outside Kuwait. Strange, Yet Beautiful Fruits & Vegetables Here’s a fun roundup of odd fruits and veggies. If you have any experience eating any of them, we’re all ears!
Durian
There are more than 30 durian species in Southeast Asia alone, but only about one third of them are edible. Those who don’t like the flavor of the durian fruit often say it smells like dirty gym socks. Yum!
Ugli Fruit
Bottle Gourd
The bottle gourd grows in tropical areas all over the world and can actually be used as a real bottle, rather than be eaten.
Carambola
The carambola, also known as starfruit, is native to Southeast Asia and is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C and low in sugar, sodium and acid.
The ugli fruit is actually a Jamaican tangelo, which was created by hybridizing a grapefruit (or pomelo), an orange and a tangerine. Because it’s a bit unsightly when ripe, it was called the Ugli fruit by its trademarker, Cabel Hall Citrus Limited.
Pitaya
Pitaya is found on several cactus species. In different countries it’s known as dragon fruit, dragon pearl fruit, and strawberry pear.
Monstera Deliciosa
This guy is also known as monstereo, windowleaf, Mexican breadfruit, Swiss cheese plant, ceriman, fruit salad plant, or just monster fruit, due to its monster size (it can grow up to two feet in length!). It’s mostly native to Mexico and Panama.
Horned Melon
This fruit is another with tons of other names: kiwano, horned melon, African horned cucumber, hedged gourd, jelly melon. It’s native to Africa, but also grows in California, Chile, Australia and New Zealand, as well. In California it’s widely known as Blowfish fruit. Although it’s edible, kiwano is mostly used as decorative food.
Noni Fruit
Talk about aliases! It’s only called Noni in Hawaii. Elsewhere, this fruit goes as the great morinda, Indian mulberry, nunaakai (Tamil Nadu, India) , dog dumpling (Barbados), mengkudu (Indonesia and Malaysia), apatot (Philippines), Kumudu (Bali), pace (Java), beach mulberry, and cheese fruit! The tree that produces the fruit is actually in the coffee family.
Horned Melon
Buddha’s hand fruit is very fragrant and is used predominantly by the Chinese and Japanese for perfuming rooms and personal items, such as clothing. According to WIKI, “The fruit may be given as a religious offering in Buddhist temples. According to tradition, Buddha prefers the ‘fingers’ of the fruit to be in a position where they resemble a closed rather than open hand, as closed hands symbolize to Buddha the act of prayer.”
Black Radish
Black Spanish or Black Spanish Round occur in both round and elongated forms, and are sometimes simply called the black radish or known by the French name Gros Noir d’Hiver.
Dulse Yangmei
Yangmei (sometimes called/spelled yamamomo, myrica rubra, kanji, katakana, Chinese bayberry, or Chinese strawberry) is native to Southeast Asia, mainly China.
Technically, dulse is a red alga, but often considered a vegetable, most often found off the coast of Maine. I like to eat it as a snack, right out of the bag, or sprinkled on top of my salad. In Iceland people eat it with butter! June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net

With the New Science of Weight Control©
Let’s Make A Diet!
Dr. Mike, Dr. Bonnie and Dr. Jasem of the Wellness, Fitness and Obesity Consultants Hawally, 6504-4125 Visit: www.obesityconsultants.us A science-based monthly column based upon the U. S. National Institute of Health ‘Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity’
A Formula for Success!
1. You must understand the problem 2. You must have a plan for dealing with the problem 3. You must then follow the plan! I know this to be a successful formula. Over the years I have witnessed many thousands of patients achieve permanent control over their weight problem with this simple formula.
Science Based Fact
Your heredity hormones decide if you can gain weight. Your choice of foods determines if youwill gain weight! This is true but it is a mistake to under-play the role of personal choices. In the final analysis, it was your choice to eat sugar, oil, bread, chocolates, etc., and sit without exercising which together determined how much weight you gained. Tonya was a frustrated 26-year-old patient. “Dr. Green, my friends and I eat the very same foods and do the same form of exercise. We are all about the same height, but they weigh less than 57 kilograms. I have not weighed that since I was twelve years old. I’ve always had a weight problem and they never had one. Why?” In Tonya’s case the environment is the same, the personal food choices June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
are the same, but heredity overpowers both causing obesity for Tonya and thinness for her friends. It is not fair, but we all know life is seldom fair. The bad news for Tonya is that her heredity is very strong. The good news is that when Tonya finally understood her weight problem she was finally able to gain control.
Science Based Fact
The sooner you understand and accept you own problem, the sooner you will be able to control your problem.
Understanding the Words
Use of incorrect words is one of the major recurring problems with physicians who treat weight issues even university obesity researchers, refuse to correct the meaning of the words they use with patients.
Science Based Fact
If the vocabulary is wrong, the diet can never be right. Two studies published in the May 2003 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine used confusing words in an article pertaining to a high fat, high protein diet and a low fat, high carbohydrate diet. News articles repeated their mistakes when they used the term carbohydrate without telling us if they
meant processed carbohydrate or unprocessed carbohydrate.
Why is this important?
The correct use of words is very important. There is a huge difference between the meaning and implications of these two very different terms. For example, a large body of science based-evidence tells us that processed carbohydrates: • Stimulate hunger • Build fat easily • Cause overweight and obesity • Oppose weight loss • Promote disease • Push the wrong hormone buttons. On the other hand, unprocessed carbohydrates: • Do not stimulate hunger • Do not build fat easily • Actually aid weight loss • Push the right hormone buttons. Clearly then, unprocessed carbohydrates (fruits& vegetables) are the good guys, and processed carbohydrates (sugar, candy, most bread, pasta, cake, most cereals) are the bad guys. Obviously no legitimate comparisons can be made between weight loss diets without carefully making adefinite distinction between these two very different terms.
You cannot be successful managing your weight problem unless you Mean What You Say, and Say What You Mean. Famous physicians constantly mis-use dietary terminology! They all do it. Best selling authors offer no protection whatever from this common and confusing error. Fred was a 44-year-old government lawyer. I could always count on him to ask good questions. “Dr. Green, I am confused. Which diet is best, the high carbohydrate diet, the high protein diet, or the high fat diet?” This is really a great question that everyone asks. In order to answer clearly and accurately we must first answer another question! Precisely what is meant by: • The word diet • The word carbohydrate • The word fat • The word protein
Definition #1 Diet: The word diet comes from the Greek language and means A Way of Life. However, in everyday American English it has come to mean a weight reducing regimen, as in the Sonoma Diet®, the Abs Diet®, Atkins® Diet, the Pritikin® Diet, the
53
Health & Medicine DeanOrnish® Diet, the Mayo Clinic® Diet, the Duke University® Diet, and the South Beach® Diet. The original Greek meaning of diet conveys a very powerful idea. In order to be healthy and happy for a lifetime one must have a diet for … a lifetime!
Definition #2 Carbohydrate: The word carbohydrate has a very specific meaning in biochemistry. This formal meaning is excessively complicated for this article and is useful only for the professional chemist. In general, sugars built in plants from sunlight and carbon dioxide are called carbohydrates or starches. Glycogen is the name given to sugars stored within animals. Most commonly in plants the sugars are chemically stuck together in chains like pearls on a string.
Definition #3 The terms simple and complex carbohydrate, in reality, have no meaning at all. Technically, carbohydrates are classified as monosaccharaides (single sugars), disaccharides (double sugars), tri-saccharides (triple sugars), polysaccharides (many sugars), and hetero-saccharides (mixed sugars). No science-based authority or dictionary defines a simple or complex carbohydrate. These terms are confusing, mean differing things to different authors, and should be avoided especially when discussing dieting for weight loss.
Definition #4 Unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) are the carbohydrates in whole fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains etc. in their natural state just as they appear in nature, or just as they come from the farmer’s field. So long as carbohydrates are unprocessed, they retain their tough outer coating of cellulose and bran, as well as their full complement of vitamins and minerals. This natural configura-
tion: • Slows digestion and absorption • Prevents fat storage and weight gain • Will not cause insulin resistance • Will not cause abdominal obesity and associated diseases.
Definition #5 Processed carbohydrates (bad guys) are un-processed carbohydrates after they have been modified by milling, grinding, cooking, juicing, etc. Examples of processed carbohydrates are: • Sugar (processed from beets or cane) • Honey (nectar, processed by the bees) • Corn syrup • High fructose sweeteners • Milled and ground grains and their products including bread, cookies, pasta, bagels, pancakes, corn chips, corn bread and cereals, (excepting 100% bran). The milling and grinding of grains disrupts the protective natural architectural structure of the grain and fragments the internal starch (sugar) chains into smaller starch (sugar) units allowing speedy digestion and absorption, which • Increases hunger hormones • Delays hormones that make you feel full • Promotes rapid sugar absorption • Promotes insulin resistance • Pro-
motes fat building • Promotes fat storage, especially in the abdominal region. For our purposes then, the major difference between processed and unprocessed carbohydrate is the amount of processing that has occurred. This is an important concept because the more processing that occurs: • The more the natural packaging (fiber) surrounding the sugar chains will be disrupted • The smaller the starch (sugar) particles will ultimately be • The faster the starch (sugar) will be digested and absorbed • The more insulin will be produced • The more abdominal fat will be built and stored
Definition #6 Abdominal Obesity is fat storage inside the abdominal wall and is associated with diets rich in processed carbohydrates. Abdominal obesity causes insulin resistance (beginning of diabetes), hypertension (high blood pressure), adult onset diabetes, heart disease, strokes, some forms of cancer and early death!
Definition #7 Insulin resistance (the cause of adult diabetes) is a condition wherein insulin becomes less and less effective thus requiring more and more insulin to do the same job. Insulin resistance is caused by diets rich in processed carbohydrates.
Science Based Fact
The more processing the carbohydrate has undergone, the faster the digestion and absorption. Repetitive ingestion of processed carbohydrates is closely associated with The Metabolic Syndrome: insulin
resistance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated blood fats and heart disease. Ed was a 26-year-old unmarried lawyer who presented to my office with new onset stress, fatigue, thirst, frequent urination and difficulty controlling his weight. Prior to law school Ed had been an athlete, playing college level football, baseball and golf. Fitness was a life long passion and though work was putting serious demands on his time, he still lifted weights for an hour, two days each week, and ran one hour, two to three days weekly.
On presentation: A fasting blood sugar of over 200 with symptoms of new onset fatigue, thirst, and frequent urination was sufficient to diagnosis Ed as a new diabetic. And if we consider that his father was also a diabetic we can add validity to the diagnosis. Recall that diabetes is very strongly hereditary. Ed’s BMI of 30.16 indicates that he is also obese. His waist, having increased from “32 to 36” indicates abdominal obesity, which tells us that he also has insulin resistance, which explains his metabolic syndrome; that is, his diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol.
Meta-
bolic syndrome is a strong predictor of heart disease, cancer, stroke and early death! Ed’s dietary history was very interesting indeed.
He reported

Stay Cool this summer Drink plenty of water What’s the first thing that comes to our minds, the moment we think of summer? Sweat. And lots of sweat! While we may opt to wear loose cotton clothing to keep the heat from getting to us during the summers, there is no denying the perspiration or sweat as most of us call it. But sweating is good! It helps rid the body of toxins Sure, sweating is good and it does help to rid the body of its toxins. But at the same time it results in the body losing precious water as sweat mainly contains water and other vital minerals such as potassium, sodium, copper, calcium and so on, which are needed by the body for its normal functioning. So, as you can see that while sweating has its pros, it has its cons too! The average normal human body temperature is about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature at which the body is comfortable and wants to stay. When the weather gets above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the only way for the body to cool itself and stay at 98.6 degrees is to sweat. Sweating is effective in keeping the body at its normal temperature, but the body has to have plenty of water to produce sweat. When your body runs out of water, you can overheat quickly. Your body produces about half a gallon of sweat every hour in a hot environment, and unless you are drinking water at the same rate that you are losing it, you will dehydrate and stop sweating. High humidity also can cause the body to overheat because it prevents sweat from evaporating. If body temperature rises to 106 degrees, heat stroke can occur. Heat stroke is a life-threatening situation and medical treatment is required to prevent brain damage or even death. Death can occur in as little as
30 minutes. Symptoms of heat stroke include red, hot dry skin, rapid heart rate, dizziness and confusion. The skin becomes red and hot because the skin blood vessels expand to try to release heat. Dizziness and confusion occur because high body temperature affects the brain. A person suffering from heat stroke also might have nausea, fast breathing and abdominal pain.
appears to be suffering from heat stroke, seek emergency medical attention if they’re dizzy or unconscious. The first thing you need to do is cool your child down. Take them indoors and have them drink water if they’re not unconscious. Soak your child’s entire body in cool water or give your child a sponge bath using cool water. Apply ice packs to the head, neck, armpits and groin.
Heat stroke can occur whenever the body is exposed to extreme temperatures. Children are especially prone to suffer when temperatures rise. When playing outside, children should drink plenty of liquids to ensure their body can stay cool.
Simple ways to increase our water intake are by opting for foods with high water content such as:
Children also can suffer from heat stroke if they are left in a hot car. Do not leave a child (or a pet) inside of a parked car for any length of time. The temperature inside a car can reach more than 140 degrees in as little as 15 minutes and leaving a window cracked does not help. Luckily, heat stroke can be prevented by drinking a lot of fluids before and during activity that involves exposure to extreme heat. Even if your child doesn’t say he or she is thirsty, they still should drink because usually by the time you’re thirsty you’re already dehydrated. Caffeinated drinks should be avoided because they can cause dehydration. Dress your child in lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing. Try to schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day (morning or evening). Have your child play in shaded areas. On very hot, humid days, try to spend as much time indoors as possible. If your child
Leafy green vegetables – Lettuce, spinach, cabbage and radish.
l
Watermelons are a huge favorite during the summers and rightly so, as they contain a high water content owing to the fact that almost 90% of the watermelon is water! Melons too are a great source of high water content food, during summer.
l
Tomatoes are also an excellent choice when it comes to foods with high water content.
l
Fruits too are an excellent high water content food choice, especially apples and citrus fruits (sweet lemon,
l
orange). Coconut water is another excellent summer beverage, as it is isotonic in nature. In layman’s term it means that coconut water contains similar vital minerals, which are lost due to sweat and urine.

the doctor out to make Kuwait slim With the comfortable lifestyle at hand , lack of exercise and the fat and carbrich delicacies we eat, obesity has become one of the primary reasons for health hazards in Kuwait. We present to you someone who is here to rescue those who need help in this sphere, our very own superhero Dr Khaled Hamad Alanezi. A Consultant Surgeon at Amiri Hospital, Dr Alanezi is a sup-specialist in Obesity surgery. The kind of surgery is minimally invasive and safe at the same time. He was also on the Canadian Board in General Surgery in 2001. While he is not out salvaging lives, futures and peoples’ confidences in the operation theatre at Amiri hospital, he is a father, a cancerian and loves to fish. But magazine will quiz him on what he does best- obesity surgeries. Read on as Dr. Alanezi shares some pointers to keep in mind if we are considering such a surgery and tips on how to prevent that stage altogether.
Please introduce yourself.
I am Dr. Khaled Hamad Alanezi and I work as a Consultant surgeon at the Amiri hospital, here in Kuwait. I specialize in minimally invasive surgery, mainly in obesity surgery. I was a member of the Canadian Board in General Surgery in the year 2001. Although I am a doctor, fishing is my hobby, but the favorite job I hold is that of being a father.
Why did you choose this career & how did it happen?
Since I was a child,I had interest in anything technical. I wanted to be a doctor especially a surgeon because I thought it is special and not everybody can be a star surgeon and I thought I will excel this field. I joined medical school in 1985 and from the beginning I was attracted more and more to anything that required manual skills. I used to get myself involved in operations with all surgeons though medical students were not expected to get into the operating room. After graduating as a trainee doctor, I immediately and without hesitance joined the general surgery specialty in Amiri hospital. Then I went to Canada in 1996 and joined the surgery program there (Canada has the best programs in the world). I spent seven years of intensive training and was able to, during the last two years, work as an independent surgeon. I had a major interest in laparoscopic surgery mainly obesity surgery as obesity is considered the disease of the present times.
Regarding sliming operations when did it start in the world and was it immediately in Middle East & Kuwait or were we late in this aspect ? Obesity surgery started in the sixties but it was difficult and the results were not encouraging as they were done the traditional way which is through big cuts in the belly. It was not until the early nineties, when the operations started to be done through small little holes and the results were great with minimal harm to the patient. Since then, the operations started to be more popular all over the world and Kuwait. We have started obesity surgery in Kuwait much earlier than many countries in the area. We started the obesity surgery program in Amiri about five years ago. Now almost all surgeons in Amiri can perform the operations competently. June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
When a patient comes to you and she/he wants to do the operation what are the main things you ask and what are the main things they should ask you? What’ is the weight at which one must begin to consider or think of such operations?
First we ask general questions about the general health of the patient and then we go in more and deep details about obesity, this include specific questions about eating habits personal and social habits and details about previous dieting efforts. Patients should understand the way these operations work. With regard to weight, we don’t depend on weight, we depend on the Body Mass Index(BMI) which is simply an equation that account for the weight and height. We follow the recommendations of the WHO(World Health Organization) which recommends it for patients with a BMI of more than 40 or 35-40 if the patient has other medical problems like DM, hypertension, high lipids , infertility , sleeping difficulties or joints problems due to overweight.
When a patient needs to lose only 10 to 15 Kilos what do you recommend and when do you recommend a sleeve or a bypass operation ?
In such cases I do not recommend a surgery as I think dieting and exercising is enough. They can consider putting a stomach balloon which is not an operation.
What is the common mistake patients do that makes them not lose weight after the operation?
When they think that the operation is like magic means that they do the operation and can do and eat what they want and lose weight.
If someone is lazy and don’t like to go to the gym what do you advice after or without an operation to lose weight? I suggest they should change their eating habits.

What are the Factors that can lead to the success of this operation? The operation can be successful if the patient changes his life style and eating habits and the bad results may occur if he continues same life style and unhealthy eating.
When cant you do a sliming operation for a patient and what are the reasons?
Underlying psychological problems or if the general medical condition of the patient does not permit a safe anesthesia, the operation cannot be performed.
Some people didn’t benefit from the operation the way they expected, Why is that?
As I have mentioned, they need to change their lifestyle
Two friends did the operation one sleeve & one by pass and the by-pass patient lost more than the one who underwent the sleeve operation. Why is that?
A little bit more, but it all depends on the patient. The bypass works in two ways to reduce weight. It reduces the amount of food and reduce the absorption of food from the gut, whereas, in sleeve, it is mainly reduction in the portions of food.
Does the effect of the operation stop after June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
a while?
Usually it does stop when they reach their ideal body weight.
What is the maximum loss of weight?
One can lose up to 80-90% of excess body weight. I have a patient who lost more than 160kg after a sleeve operation.
Does the age effect the speed of weight loss?
Yes, the younger the patient is, the faster the weight loss will be.
What do you advice for the people who would like to undergo the operation? They should change their life style and eating habits.
What advice would you give to people who are considering the operation but are afraid? I encourage them as the operation is safe and the risks are much lesser than the risk of obesity itself.
Is there anything you want to add?
Yes, people should know that the operations meant to help them reduce weight, in other words, it helps them getting rid of their weight. It does not treat their extra weight.
Your message to theCity magazine?
You are brave to be inside the operation theatre.
That makes me know how special you are, willing to work hard for the best welfare of the people. I wish you all the best!

2 Simple Tips For a Safe Kuwaiti Summer
A
s most readers know, the daytime temperature in Kuwait during summers soars up to the range of 42-46oC (107-115oF) with the night time not bringing much respite. This period of harsh blistering heat kicks in around the month of May and lasts till the month of October. Prior to the invention of fossil fuel-powered electronic gadgets and air conditioning systems, the inhabitants of the
efit we often tend to overlook the basic well-being of our body and allow fashion to dictate our lifestyle more than the logic of function. This trend can have several detrimental results, especially in the long run. For instance, during summer, we are inclined to spend more time outdoors. We also undergo the regular tanning and laser hair removal sessions and put ourselves through rapid weight loss programs. Don’t get me wrong
eat sufficient food items containing vitamin D. This help in maintaining vitamin D levels in the body within the normal range and prevents diseases like osteoporosis from assailing us. This is because a lack of vitamin D nutrients in the body has been related to the development of degenerative diseases like rickets, depression, multiple sclerosis, poor cardiovascular health, certain cancers, and overall increase in the
Middle-East region survived in these circumstances by dressing suitably for the hot weather and relying on desert appropriate balanced diets. While travelling in the desert terrain here, they used nature’s own Mercedes-Benz - the camel, and looked out for oases for shelter and refreshment. Today, with the modern lifestyle and facilities that can be observed in many areas across Kuwait, we no longer need to look for an oasis. Instead, we can either enter any of the numerous Sultan Centers or pull up to any drive-through to quench that consuming thirst or just to cool ourselves.
but these activities can provide much pleasure as they are aimed at helping us enhance our self-esteem with a tweak in physical appearance, utilizing various ultraviolet radiation sources and diets.
mortality rate. Doctors in Kuwait have warned that the lack of sufficient vitamin D intake is becoming a growing problem in the state and entire region, due to lack of adequate exposure to sunlight. However, exposed to excessive sunlight (regardless of skin color), the previous mentioned benefits are overturned by some of the terrible outcomes that may arise, namely severe or permanent skin damage, faster aging, water and mineral imbalances from dehydration and excessive diets, and skin cancers. Dressing appropriately,
Nevertheless, despite these advancements that work for our benJune 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
The benefits from these activities can be our allies in life as we, just like many of our sources of food, exploit ultraviolet radiation to generate essential levels of vitamin D minerals in our body. This leads me to TIP 1: Get Adequate Exposure to Ultraviolet Light (Not too little, and not too much). It is recommended that we spending atleast 10 minutes per day exposing 40 percent of the body such as the back, arms and legs to the sun apart from ensuring that we
wearing sunglasses and using sunblock when outdoors for extended periods can help you regulate excessive exposure to the sun. Additionally, you can also go for alternatives such as the solarium and spray tanning, if you are looking for a lovely tan for the summer. But, don’t panic! This does not mean that you have to live in seclusion for the next few months. I am merely trying to make you think about what previous generations of Middle Easterners did to strive in this climate. This leads me to TIP 2: Pay Attention to Your Diet (Keep hydrated and eat nutritious snacks). Simply, try to drink 1 liter of water every hour when temperatures rise above 38oC (100oF). Additionally, this quantity of water can be increased if you know that you are going to engage in activities that generate higher levels of perspiration, such as sessions at the solarium or playing outdoor sports. You can also rely on one of the most ancient fruits known to mankind for nutrition- dates. These treats are readily available in shops, packed with enriching nutrients and have a taste that can also satisfy your sweet tooth. So, my friends, while enjoying your time outdoors and indoors during this summer, please remember to keep safe in the soon-to-come higher temperatures by optimizing your exposure to ultraviolet light and levels of nutrition. HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!!!

That night, after months of working in the office, spending weekends in shopping malls, being stuck in traffic jams for countless hours and spending at least as many sweaty hours in the ladies’ gym, I was at long last ready for my well-deserved week full of relaxation, sightseeing, shopping and fun. My suitcase was packed with clothes in various colors for any occasion, my favorite jeans, skirts, tops, shoes, handbags, accessories, cosmetics, and most importantly - more shoes! Having another pair with you can prove handy as you never know when you break the heel of your stiletto walking down the picturesque cobblestone streets in one of those idyllic small villages or in the old town of a large metropolitan city. While heading to the airport, I was excited and confident about how wellprepared I was for the trip. Even for the flight journey, my clothes were functional (no pockets in which I most probably would have stored and forgotten a cosmetic item which would have set off an annoying alarm at the security check in the airport) and elegant at the same time. My boots were practical (easy to remove before and put on after the security check) and with a reasonable length of heels. My passport, airline ticket and a small plastic bag with toiletries were all ready in my handbag and easy to access. While turning into the parking area at the airport I spotted a long row of cars with women and men in them working the horn in various degrees of nervousness. The cacophony of horns didn’t seem to stop and I suspected some unpleasant things were happening somewhere in the car park. Suddenly I spotted a white bundle of dishtashas further away between the cars, hands holding flip-flops and slapping frantically. Agals and keffiyehs were being flung in different directions. I understood that there were some men there, sorting out a disagreement between them through a scuffle. After a few minutes of the spectacle, the bone of contention seemed to have been solved between the participants and the fight club repositioned their flip-flops and disheveled clothing items to the body parts they usually belong
to. Shortly after that the horns fell quiet, the cars started moving and I finally went on to park my car. All the while, I remember admitting to myself that I like the problem-solving methods between men here – you make your point clear to the opposing party right then and there and the two parties work through the situation until the dispute is settled. “How easy is that?” I think, while grabbing my sun glasses, car keys and handbag to exit the car except… Where is my handbag?? I got panic and rapidly search the car – nothing! I must have left it at home! I still had enough time to speed home and get back to the airport on time on the condition that I didn’t waste a minute! On my way out of the car park I got cut off by two cars that abruptly stopped in front of me. Their doors were then torn open and the earlier scenario of flip-flop lashing between white dishtashas restarted. Oh, well, obviously the discussion hadn’t gotten over yet! This time I join the horn contest of the cars as I really was in a hurry. I could miss my flight guys! After a quick consideration, I decide to get out of my car and walk towards the commotion. I immediately saw the effect of my unconventional action – the frantic movements stopped and several pairs of dark eyes pin me down.”How can we help you, ma’am?” someone asks. “Well, I am terribly sorry to disturb, but, eh... my handbag, I have a flight to catch, but my purse is in the handbag, and, I guess I must have, eh... So I really have to go.” I muttered, not sure that it made anything I said made sense. But I suppose it didn’t have to because without a word the crowd made way to let my car through. Great! Thanks! I ran back to my car, drove out of the car park without daring to glance in the rear mirror. My only worry at this point was that I would be back in the same car park an hour later and I hoped that the quarrel would have been settled by then. Yes, eventually I did make it back in time to catch my flight, and now, while enjoying my lunch in the airplane I am reminded of the kindness and sympathy with which I was treated at the car park. Although I was intruding into an important discussion, I was encouraged to speak out and my problem was taken seriously. What wonderful people we have here! I will miss you, Kuwait.

Shuffle restaurant
When a gorilla is crowned, you get shuffled.
When I reached my destination, I noticed lights emanating from a small dark place with a gorilla sign. At first sight, I wondered, “Why a gorilla with a silver crown?” Come along, let’s take this journey together. Shuffle Restaurant is a cozy multipatterned and an unusually designed concept, which I fell in love with instantly!! It definitely has a loungelike ambience, with a genial and hospitable staff, that completes the setting. While heading towards my table, the pleasant music lured me in. The purple lights transformed to yellow, leaving me mesmerized and feeling almost as if I had stepped out of town for a moment into a magical place. The panorama projector in which the lights merged, played along and changed, transforming the restaurant completely, was the cherry on top of it all. I was seated with Fadi Dyiab, the operations manager at the Shuffle Restaurant, and asked him the primary question that was lingering in mind. Why to use a crowned gorilla as their symbol? Fadi explained that they felt that the soul of that logo leaves an imprint in one’s mind. He later added that not just the logo, but also their food leaves an everlasting impact on the customers. He was right, as the sight of the amusing crowned gorilla did leave me tickled and still remains in my memory. After chatting for a while with him, the food soon arrived. The two kinds of juices I had ordered were June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
served in beaker like glasses. One of them was called ‘Very Berry’ which was a red mix of fresh berries and the other was called ‘Peach Sunset’. Both of these drinks were served with fresh fruit and I indulged well in both of them, trying not to be noticed and still saving place for more! We moved on down the menu and arrive at the Salad section. When one says ‘salad’, one might think that the ingredients could be almost anything and yet, of course, we all do have our favorite combinations .Yet the salad options at the Shuffle Restaurant are an altogether different dimension. A fusion of mixed leaves and fruits such as raspberry, blackberry and mangoes, all colorful and fresh, was served with a special white sauce! You couldn’t predict what the next bite would taste like and each time there was a delectable mélange of sweet and sour. It was new and somewhat confusing. The restaurant not only came up with distinctive food items, but also went for glamour food. One such dish was their ‘Seafood Salad’, made from mixed leaves, shrimp top with caviar, drizzled in their Shuffle Special Orange Sauce – I must say that was one of the finest salads I’ve ever had. I ordered two appetizers for myself, the first one being ‘Kunafa’ and mozzarella cheese. I loved the way I had to pull away each piece as I bit into them, to cut the delicious cheese that had melted to form threads. The dish totally wowed me. The other
appetizer was Sesame Miso Shrimps and one could forever savor the aroma of lemon grass and ginger coming from these hot golden shrimps that were served in 6 delicious pieces. Finally, the main course dishes arrived. The super creative dish called ‘Rainbow Burger’ looked bulky yet cheerful. It has 3 color buns, 3 different fillings and one surprising versatile taste for each of them. The Cheese Burger was in orange,
ing down on so many delicacies. Still I asked for some dessert and fortunately there wasn’t any as the restaurant had not set a final menu yet. So I ran out to find myself some sugar savory when I spotted a ‘Yogen Fruz’ outlet right next door. It was just perfect for my dessert. The extraordinary thing about this place is that apart from all the ready flavors they have, you can still make your own yoghurt mix and combination of toppings. I mixed berries and pomegranate for the yoghurt topped with fresh pomegranate- a lip-smacking red delight! Just like the colors inside the Shuffle Restaurant changed, the flavors I got to taste here also were varied. I would like to thank this unique restaurant for the invitation and for all the dishes they kept surprising me with. It was an excellent experience. See you next month!!!
Chicken Burger was in yellow and the outstanding Fish Fillet was green in color. The other burger was called ‘Upset Burger “- a big beef burger with cheese and dried egg, bacon and cheese, and on top were two crispy onion rings to add some zing into the whole combination. I thought I was full after gorg-

A
week passed now and the situation was the same. But something different happened that night. Loud noise was heard over and over again. The boy couldn’t really make out what it sounded like. The sound was very foreign. Firecrackers maybe? No. That would not make sense. Unless someone was celebrating the end of the war. But that too did not make sense.
Through the Storeroom
By now the girls knew that something was wrong but they never expected war. Neither would they have understood what that word meant. They stayed in the shelter the whole night huddled closely together. In another situation it would have been cozy and comforting but the boy could not shake the thought of soldiers barging into the house uninvited and taking people away. The thought haunted the boy for the rest of that night. June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
“Get in get in!!” the neighbor ordered as he opened his front door for them. “Come with me son,” he said as he held out his hand for the boy to hold. He took the boy to a little storeroom in a corner behind a few old boxes.
There was no gentler way for his father to answer his son’s question. But with a deep breath he said “machine guns son. I need you to be strong, you must watch over your sisters,” his father said as tenderly as he could. “We need to stay together in this situation.” His father grabbed his son with strength and hugged him tightly. The little boy felt like crying but he held it in, had to be a “man.” The sounds of the machine gun didn’t quieten that night or the night after. As if the weapons were screaming with no one to answer their demands. In fact, if anything, the sounds were getting closer and closer. Suddenly he heard his father calling everybody into the shelter they had prepared.
onds the boy caught site of tanks and military trucks in the distance. “It’s just like I see in a movie,” thought the little boy to himself.
“Stay in there until I come for you, do you hear me, just stay in there!” He closed the door to the storeroom and went to the basement and returned within moments with a wheel-chair. “Here sit in this; they might not harass you if you are sitting in this” he said doubtfully, “whatever happens do not get out of that chair!”
The boy woke up afraid when he couldn’t find his father or sisters near him. For a second he thought that the whole thing might be a dream until he caught sight of his mother lying next to him. He woke her up and asked where his father and sisters were. “Your father took your sisters to your grandmother’s house honey,” replied his mother, “we will join them tomorrow… go to sleep now.” Nothing made sense. But then again war did not make sense either. He tried to ignore all the questions floating around his head and forced himself to sleep. The boy woke up the next day to the sound of banging on the door. He jumped up and watched his mother as she went to open the door.
“Hurry, come with me,” a man said. The boy recognized the man to be their neighbor. He was a nice man, and was actually the first who welcomed them into the neighborhood when they first moved into the area. He lived alone without a family. He had no family. At least that was what his parent told the boy whenever he asked. “They are in our neighborhood forcing themselves into every house,” he said quickly between deep breaths. “I know your husband isn’t here, but you have to come with me.” The mother grabbed her son and everything she could collect in the other hand and rushed out with the neighbor. They dashed across the road and within sec-
What seemed like only moments later, thumps were heard on the front door. The mother put her hand on her heart and looked at the storeroom where her son was. She felt relieved that the door was closed. But little did she know that her son had a full view through the storeroom door that he opened just wide enough. He was about to open the door a little more and call for his mother to join him. He knew he was in a safer place than her. But it was too late, the neighbor had already opened the front door and within seconds dozens of men with green uniforms poured into the house. They grabbed the neighbor and demanded that he call out his sons even though he kept telling them that he was unmarried and child-
less. He told the soldiers that he only lived with his disabled sister. Not believing him, the soldiers threw him aside and started to search the house. The boy realized his mother preparing to get up as they got closer to the bathroom. The neighbor stared at the mother with a look reassuring her that her son will be safe. The soldiers checked every corner of the house but found nothing of interest. They returned to the neighbor furiously questioning why he would have such a large house for himself. Like a pack of wolves the soldiers began to close in on the neighbor. No matter what the neighbor said or how much he explained, the green wolves did not seem to believe him. Instead they pounced and pinned him to the ground and began tying him up with a rope that was conveniently attached to one of the soldiers belts. They tied his ankles together and handcuffed his wrists. They seemed to be waiting impatiently as one of the soldiers slowly came down the stairs holding an iron in one hand. The boy couldn’t take his eyes off the iron. What could they possibly want to do with it? He notices his mother’s eyes locked on to the iron as well. The boy’s face stuck to the little crack in the door with one eye witnessing whatever is about to take place. His heart began to beat faster as he watched the soldier plugging the iron into an outlet. One of the soldiers brought the iron close to the man while checking its heat. The soldier’s intentions begin to dawn on the boy and he slowly bit his lips and closed his eyes. What seemed like hours passed before his eyes flashed open to the sound of his screaming mother. He saw that the soldiers ripped the neighbor’s shirt off and have placed the steaming iron on his naked chest. The neighbor cried and squealed as they moved the iron up and down his chest melting his skin. The stench of charred skin began to fill the room. “Please stop!” his mother cried out, “what do you want from him? He hasn’t done anything.” In a disturbingly calm voice, a soldier answered: “Do you want to be next?” The mother put her head down as tears began to flow down her face. She was a helpless mother with her son hidden only a few meters away. She looked in her son’s direction with the corner of her eye and was terrified that through a small opening in the storeroom door, her son was looking back at her.

Sony's Power Vision for 2030
S
ony is looking to revolutionize the inefficient way in which we consume power.
A new concept video from the electronics giant shows how we could use power more efficiently by the year 2030 by switching to smart outlets with authentication and wireless charging on a broad scale, assuming we survive the zombie Mayan apocalypse in 2012. The prototype power outlet, integrated with a short-range wireless FeliCa transmitter (and a new RFID over power line technology), allows the user to swipe a pay card across the faceplate and pay for energy on the spot. What makes it truly interesting is if humankind keeps progressing towards alternative energies (such as wind, solar, and biomass), then our outlets could give us options as to what source from which we obtain our power. Imagine not having to use power from the electric company for a TV-viewing session, instead drawing from a battery in your house that contains stored power from your solar- and wind-power generation sources. These outlets, if available all over a city, can offer people with electric cars the ability to charge up and pay for that energy easily. The proposed power control center app (for tablet or smartphone) would enable consumers to observe how much power is available from various power sources in the home. With the app, one could check how much juice the electric car in the garage contains, enable or disable outlets in various areas of the house, or remotely control devices connected to a power outlet.
timetable for commercializing these smart outlets seems "ten years away," according to Taro Tadano from Sony Japan’s business development department. Admittedly, he wants to speed up the process of development and integration, but reliability, safety, and patent battles present several roadblocks.
In a recent press conference in Tokyo, representatives at Sony spoke about the developments, says AV Watch (check out their hands-on pics, too). A
While the overall idea seems grand, one must also wonder about cost. Regardless, he and many others at Sony are work-

ing hard to strengthen relationships with various Japanese companies related to this field, with the hope of moving this past the concept stage and into reality. One cannot help but admire the craveworthy Sony concept products (from 2030) also shown in the video, such as a TV that you turn on by facing a wall and drawing a rectangle with your hand, a flexible tablet, and easy wireless charging.

Smart TVs - The good, the bad, and the ugly
S Smart TV is the new buzzword. What is the definition of a smart TV? Are there different types? Should I buy it? These are some of the questions that we are going to discuss in this article.
June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
mart TV is defined as a TV that connects to the Internet to allow users to access online content and download apps. It is widely seen as the next big thing for the TV industry. They come in different sizes but the most common size is between 46 and 60“. These are usually LED based although there are other types such as plasma. The leaders in the smart TV industry presently are Samsung, LG, Sony, and Sharp. Most of these new age television sets are available in 3D. However, the 3-dimensional aspect has failed in terms of market adoption due to the wide array of technology used by different venders. The need to use glasses inorder to enjoy the 3D technology also made it hard for consumers to accept it. The main feature that consumers are looking for when they seek to buy a smart TV are the various applications available in the market, full internet browsing, and Wi-Fi connection support. There are other options and features such as DLNA support which enables sharing and displaying your multimedia on your TV, refresh rates, 2D to 3D conversion, etc. In order to fully utilize a smart TV you need a device that support HD content such as HD satellite receiver, Blu-ray device, HD channel, game console such as PS3 and Xbox 360 etc. So do we really need them? For people who are game fans with high definition graphics and people who like to use their TV as their internet hub, smart TV is the right choice. This allows one to watch YouTube videos, access social networking
websites such as Facebook and Twitter, checking their email and browsing using their TV set all through a single device. If this does not seem like a lucrative prospect to you, it is not worth the extra money you would have to pay for smart TV function, especially since the cost of this technology, being new, is quite high. In the near future, that is 2-4 years from now, I believe SMART TV is the only choice you will have in the market. Already, this year has been declared the smart TV year where new and improved TV sets have been introduced to the market, including but not limited to OLED and ultra LED, with the resolution going up to 4096 from 1024(which is called full HD today- 1024x1080). I also believe the war between IOS and android will move to the TV industry as more smart TV manufacturers are adopting android as there OS. Apple is also believed to be introducing an IOS based TV called iTV by next year to complement their award winning Apple TV. Things that you should expect in the future Smart TV sets would include voice command, motion detection, more online content streaming, and probably a revolution in the TV broadcast industry, as the world witnessed with the smart mobile phone in the recent past.
Technology
Unusual but Creative Lavazza A Modo Mio espresso Cup machine Espresso machines are similar to semi-automatic machines because they are easier to use than fully manual espresso machines. The Lavazza A Modo Mio espresso machine is designed by Saeco Gaggia and is available in many skins. The espresso machine has an interesting function which controls the temperature and makes the coffee as hot as you like. This espresso machine from Mado Mio is only meant to fill one cup of steaming espresso, just the way you like it. It can be set the right temperature and the right recipe for the espresso with only one press of a button. The special design of this espresso machine shows a metallic handle placed on top of it, which makes it very easy to handle and move from one place to another, for example when you want to take it with you in another room or when you leave town on holiday, but you can’t just resist without your favorite espresso. The different skins are very funny and colorful and they fit any kitchen.
Stylish Wooden Espresso Coffee Maker Home appliances are supposed to make our lives easier and a lot more comfortable. If we use them we shorten the time it takes us to accomplish a certain thing, to do something around the house. But sometimes the most important factor in choosing them is the design: we simply buy a product because we like it. Yes, it is useful, but it’s important to have a nice design, too. And, if we can’t find exactly what we want, some of us who are more skilled can dare do that thing themselves. This is how this unusual wooden espresso coffee maker was born.
Of course you will not find this item for sale in store because it is unique and it’s only a project, as all the normal appliances like that are made of plastic. However, it’s nice to see some wooden things around you – in a world full of plastic. This espresso coffee maker is made according to the wish of the Norwegian designer Øystein Helle Husby. This device is functional because the skeleton and the most important pieces and buttons were “borrowed” from a normal espresso machine and only the carcass was made of poplar wood. And that’s exactly this natural material that makes it look so good. June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net

Interviews
Imagine yourself driving across the Arabian desert to the neighboring Saudi Arabia or just going for a drive into the arid region. As your hair flies back in the gentle warm wind, you open your eyes, not to find the dreary expanse of a desert, but little pockets of green spread out around you. Khaled Akluilaib and his team at Kuwait Oasis have visualized a green future for our country and have come up with a slew of unique ideas to make what they visualize come true. Understanding the need to conserve the environment and preserve the desert wildlife as well as the importance of ensuring sustainable development for the future generations, this project in Kuwait hopes to create a positive change. It works on a participatory basis so that every one of us can be involved in fulfilling this vision. Kuwait Oasis calls out to families or other groups going to the desert for camping during the winter to plant 10 trees of a specific type and irrigate it during the winter season. Being of a nature that can survive the desert climate after that, the trees planted will continue to thrive. Aiming to do this for all the years to come, Kuwait Oasis hopes that “our deserts will be our kid’s oasis.” They also are planning a Green Wall project along the borders of Kuwait and its neighboring countries. The Operations Head of Kuwait Oasis, Khaled Alkulaib, tells theCITY magazine more about their roots, ideas, challenges and future plans. We completely support him and we hope you do to!
Khaled Al-Kulaib What made you go for a project of this nature and purpose?
I have grown up watching various kinds of wild life in the deserts of Kuwait. Starting from butterflies in school gardens and daisies on the side of the roads during spring, there are foxes roaming the desert at night, desert rats jumping between native bushes. There are many other species that we don’t get to see much anymore. My team and I felt responsible towards our environment and towards our future generations, so we decided to make an effort to revitalize the world around us. Instead of cursing the dark, we decided to light a candle.
Can you introduce the project in 3 to 5 words? Kuwait Oasis is good intentions manifesting.
How many years did it take you to reach this stage?
It all started on a personal level in 2000 and in 2011 we joined the Environmental Voluntary Foundation to make our team an official institution and work on a more professional level. We aimed to get governmental approvals, as well as make alliances and partnerships with the private sector and other prospective partners.
Have you ever felt disppointed at some point while approaching some companies for support?
Disappointed!! NEVER. We never feel disappointed or dejected at Kuwait Oasis, We enjoy challenges because we are working for a great cause. Big achievements come with a price, the bigger the intention the more challenging is the road-trip. We are all up for these challenges and rise above any difficulties. Kuwait Oasis was welcomed in every company it was introduced to, we had a great time meeting them and discussing our cause and plans. We are sure that all of them want to help us in one way or another, Its just a matter of how they will offer assistance and how it serves their objectives. June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
What is the next step?
We are starting the largest environmental project in the history of the Middle-east, and also one of the largest in the world, it is called "Kuwait Green Wall". It is basically parallel rows of trees along the Kuwaiti boarders. We are working with the Ministry of Interior on this project and they have offered us great support. We are also going to launch an online portal for our project that will be a globally distinguished website that will be interactive and will also display data about our projects. It will also measure the impact of our activities and monitor them.
Who all have supported you?
We have had great support from many individuals, companies, governmental agencies and even international agencies. The list is very long, but we would like to highlight the donors who already executed projects with us: • Nathan’s restaurants, donated an oasis of 500 trees. • Viva telecom, donated an oasis of 3000 trees. • Ministry of Interior (Deputy Minister, Shiekh Mohamed Alyousef Alsabah) Super Huge support for Kuwait Green Wall. • Public Authority of Agriculture, started giving us free trees to plant in our oasis.
Fear does not exist in my dictionary :) Nothing fails, if it does not work that means there is another way for it to work. Its very simple
Anything you would like to add?
I would like to thank my team at Kuwait Oasis and at the EVF for the great work and hard work they are doing. I would like to also tell everyone that Kuwait Oasis seemed like a crazy idea to many people, yet we made it a reality. Some countries built the largest tower in the world with private companies funding, other countries built the largest university in the world in governmental funding. We would like you to all know that in Kuwait we will build the largest "Trees Wall" in the world by volunteers effort only, we are not a company nor a government. We would like the world remember us as a nation that built walls to protect the country and environment. We will always build the walls that matter by the hands of our people.
Your message to theCITY magazine.
theCity magazine is a great idea, run by local talents and we wish them all the best luck and we offer them our support as well. Thank you for having us on your pages. It is a great pride for us to be associated with you.
There are many other supporters but we mentioned above the ones who donated for planting sites. We have more than 100 donors for various requirements and needs.
What is your dream for this project?
In this project we have no dreams, we aim, plan and then execute. We are no dreamers here but make our own reality. We read the word "Impossible" as “I’m possible" and we make that possibility a living reality. In few months you will see us putting Green Soldiers on our boarders, and soon after you will see the whole world is doing what we do and follow the steps of Kuwaiti volunteers.
What would your advice be to someone with a dream project?
Believe, Believe, Believe! Aim, Feel and it will manifest. The only way to predict your future is to make it.
Do you fear failure?

Going Green at Work If you are already taking environmentally friendly steps at home, it’s a natural extension to take similar measures at work, both to save energy and to create a healthier workspace environment. Making the environment more pleasant for yourself, more energy efficient, and more eco-friendly will increase your enjoyment of the workplace and lessen its impact on the environment as a whole. Being energy and resource efficient and conscious of improving the health and well-being of the work environment will also reduce the costs of running a business. It’s time to “go green” at work, and here is how.
Steps Feel empowered. You don’t need to be management to institute change; your role as someone who cares about improving the energy efficiency and healthiness of your workplace is just as vital as those able to make the “big decisions”. In fact, change from the bottom-up is often a lot more effective as everyone has “buy-in”. And just because you don’t make the purchasing decisions, it doesn’t mean you can’t influence them. Do your research, point out the financial savings to management, and enlist the enthusiasm of your team members too. Find the information, show by doing, and create the momentum, all just because you care.
Conserve your computer’s energy. For many people with desk jobs the computer is absolutely necessary to get things done. Yet, this “efficiency” comes at a cost - it is estimated that people waste over $1 billion in electricity every year just in computer use! To help conserve energy from your computer use, you can: • Invest in an energy-saving computer, monitor and printer - it’s easy to find these computers thanks to the Energy Star label in the USA. The energy savings rating is available in many other countries as well. • Switch to energy-saving settings - the Climate Savers Computing Initiative recommends these power management settings: June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
• Monitor/display sleep: Turn off after 15 minutes or less; • Turn off hard drives/hard disk sleep: 15 minutes or less; and • System standby/sleep: After 30 minutes or less. • Setting the computer to sleep mode when you are away for short periods of time makes good sense. And don’t use a screensaver - these use energy rather than save it, and you are much better off relying on the power management features to power down to lowest energy use, or sleep mode. A computer in sleep mode can save 60-70% of power. • Turn off your computer whenever you’re not using it, especially when leaving work. And note that it isn’t true that turning your computer on and off will wear it out. • Switch to a laptop or a thin client. Laptops and thin clients use less energy than desktop computers.
Turn off all peripherals when not in use. Peripherals such as printers, video cards, speakers, and scanners continue to consume power even when not in use. Unplug them and save energy. • Unplug power adapters when not in use. • Unplug battery chargers and other chargers when the charging is complete, otherwise they are still consuming energy. • Using a power strip as a central turn-off point can reduce the number of switch-
75
ing off actions required.
Reduce printer use. The printer is one of the most used office items. Every day it cranks out tons of important faxes, emails and other documents. Here are some ways you make your printer use greener: • Try not to print in color - learn how to Cut Printing Costs on an Inkjet Color Printer. • Use a printer that does double-sided copying. If your workplace doesn’t have this, request that such a printer be added to the network and designate that one for the big printing jobs. • Print in draft mode. In addition, try to print more screen pages to a paper page. Printing two screen pages per printed page is still very readable and double-sided, that means four screen pages per one paper page - a huge paper savings! • Recycle ink and toner cartridges learn how to Refill and Reuse a Printer Cartridge. • Try to use a multifunction device. This is a combination of printer/scanner/copier in one. Provided it is Energy Star rated, it can save both energy and space.
Reduce your paper waste. Do you really have to print out every email and handout? Reduce paper waste by deciding to go paperless wherever possible. You can try to: • Keep copies of important emails, files, and more on your computer. • Use old paper with extra space to print small documents. • Don’t get any extra catalogs or magazines mailed to your office. Use a sharing system to pass around interesting materials between everyone’s in-trays. This saves paper and money. • Get your check directly deposited. Payment direct to your bank account saves paper. • Send company updates through email instead of on paper. • Review any documents online instead of printing them out. It’s com-
monplace to hear people say that they cannot read on the computer screen but it’s a learned skill like most work skills, and with practice, it is possible to read most of your work onscreen and print only when absolutely necessary. If you have problems with eye strain, see your doctor.
Prioritize your paper use. If you do use paper on a daily basis then you can make eco-friendly paper choices. Here are some things you can do: • Buy recycled and chlorine-free paper. • Try paper made from organic products like bamboo, cotton or hemp. • Print on both sides of the paper. • Shred old paper to use as packing material. • Save and reuse old boxes. • Use old sheets of paper for scrap paper or note-taking. Use mistake prints as scribble paper, or send a stack along to your children’s daycare or school for artwork use.
Reduce energy usage. Along with reducing the energy usage of your computer and peripherals, there are a number of broader ways to reduce energy usage in the workplace: • Replace your desk lamp light bulbs and overhead lights (where possible) withcompact fluorescent light bulbs qualified with the Energy Star. These bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times as long. • Turn lights off when nobody is using an office, conference room, your workspace, or the whole office at night. Where the lighting controls are on automatic override, talk to building management about having the settings changed to only use sufficient lighting for security and safety purposes, rather than over-lighting the whole building. • During cold weather, keep blinds open to let the warmth in; during warm weather, keep blinds pulled to
close out the heat of the summer sun. • Keep window vents clear of paper or other obstructions, to allow the free flow of air. • Use Energy Star rated programmable thermostats to automatically adjust heating and cooling in the building so as to avoid wasting energy. • Get an Energy Star qualified water cooler. These use half the energy as standard units.
Maintain healthy air flow. It’s already bad enough that you have to worry about air pollution every time you walk outside, but it’s also a big priority when you work inside. If you work in an office, cubicle, or workshop, it’s likely that you’re spending most of your time indoors - a Canadian survey found that people spend over 96% of time at home indoors and over 83% of time at work or school indoors,[5] equaling about 40 or more hours at your desk, office, or cubicle. Here are some ways that you can maintain a healthy air flow in your office: • Use non-toxic cleaning products. Water dampened cloths are sufficient to clean most dusty workspaces. • Open your windows to increase air flow. If you can’t open windows, be sure to take outdoor breaks throughout the day. • Don’t smoke in or near the office. • Never bring any type of aerosol can to work. • Use an air purifier to get rid of contaminants.
Green your desk, cubicle, office... literally. Get a plant and place it on or near your desk. Or, even better, buy plants for all of your neighbors. They will not only see this as a friendly gesture, but they’ll also have cleaner air to breathe! Plants absorb indoor air pollution and increase the flow of oxygen, so get a green accessory to complement your desk! Check out wikiHow’s article on how to choose a good office plant.
Recycle. There are many things in your office that you can recycle. If you don’t have a recycling station at work, start one on your own! You can get a few bins and post recycling guidelines above them. Some of them may include recycling: • Paper products like copy paper, envelopes, magazines, etc. • Cardboard boxes from shipped supplies; • Soda cans and plastic bottles; • Aluminum foil; • Plastic bags; • Ink cartridges; and • Edible items (see next).
Eat green and healthy. Everyone looks forward to their lunch break. You can save a good amount of money (about $3,000 a year) by not going out to eat every day and instead packing your lunch.[6] Follow these lunch tips to have healthier, greener eating habits: • Pack your lunch in a reusable lunch bag or box. Bento boxes are much more popular now, allowing you to have a delicious, healthy variety every lunch. • If you bring your lunch in a paper or plastic bag, recycle it. Plastic bags can be washed and left standing upside down overnight to dry. • Use containers, mugs, and silverware that can be washed and used again. • Switch to organic food and drinks. • Drink from the fountain instead of bringing water bottles. You can bring your own durable, reusable water bottle for constant refills. • Recycle your soda cans, bottles and aluminum foil. • Use a washable napkin instead of paper towels. • Walk to a healthy lunch eatery if you forget to pack your lunch.

Trendy Accessories: Braided Bags This season has witnessed the appearance of a few really unexpected trends like paisley, glam sportswear and even braided bags. If earlier we considered braided bags to be good only for beach wear, now thanks to unstoppable designers’ imagination braided bag is a more versatile accessory that can complement both a casual and smart outfits
Braids come both tiny and delicate like on Diane Von Furstenberg and Burberry Prorsum’s bags where braids serve more like details, or bold and statement like on Dolce & Gabbana pieces where braids are the focus of the accessory.
Braids decorate bags of all types – large suitcases, totes, handbags and even clutches. They come in a variety of colors and either complement the design of a bag or make it totally unique.
June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
Apart from braided bags we have plenty of knitted pieces which are feminine and seductive. Such items don’t come in large sizes but they do bring a lot of attention.
In addition to braided and knitted bags designers offer us braided and knitted footwear. Everyone from Alexander McQueen to Tory Burch have included such shoes into their Spring/ Summer 2012 collections. If you like this trend you can easily make a fantastic combo of braided or knitted shoes and bags.

J
eans are worn by everyone from housewives to businesswomen. The reason for that is comfort (whatever you do, wherever you go you feel really comfortable in jeans). But jeans can give you something more than just comfort. You can look incredibly stylish wearing them. All you need to do is to find a good pair that flatters your body type (Read about How To Choose Jeans For Your Shape) and team it up with right clothing and accessories (that is going to be our new topic soon, I promise!). And now we are going to speak about the hottest jeans trends for Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season. Read and tell us which
Bright Colors.
In spring and summer color is probably one of the most important things, which is totally understandable since everybody longs for brightness after winter monotony. Jeans in red, pink, aquamarine, green and violet colors have flooded stores and streets. You can play it safe and wear your trendy pair with a simple white, black or silver top, or go bold and do colorblocking with other bright tones.
of these trends you like best.
Prints. This trend has affected all categories of a woman’s wardrobe, including jeans. Florals, stripes, leopard and snake skin, wide African prints as well as kaleidoscopic patterns are key this season. Wear them with tops that feature a different print to really stand out, or complement your look with something less daring but still attractive.
Skinny Crop.
Pastel hues. Pastel hues are a must during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. Look for cream, mint, salmon, and lemon jeans to wear with romantic blouses, wedges or espadrilles, and beautiful wide-brimmed summer hats.
Skinny cropped jeans will look terrific on a slim girl with long perfect legs. In case you don’t fall under that category you better stay away from this jeans trend as all the problem areas you normally try to hide will become clearly visible. For those, who do have the assets to demonstrate, should look for mid rise, straight leg and ankle length.
High-waisted jeans. Bleached jeans. This type of jeans has kind of retro feel but you can make them look modern by wearing with faded tshirts, cut off vests or fringed tops.
With bra and cropped tops so popular now there is no wonder that highwaisted jeans and pants are also getting trendy. Cover your belly button with a pair of perfect jeans that fit you well. It can be wide-leg, too.

P
rada Resort 2012 collection is the clever combination of modern trends and those of the past. Vintage comes very close with contemporary fashion. Clothing in Alexa Chung’s style are combined with accessories Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian would opt for big events. Interested? Then see the collection!
Prada Resort 2012 collection
is an amazing combination of vintage-inspired clothing and uber modern accessories. Mini dresses, skirts, shorts, and tops featured all kinds of small prints, everything from floral brights to grids and dots. Must-have accessories included patterned foulards, berets, stylish bags, aviator sunglasses and ladylike pumps, mules and sandals.
Clothing in Prada Resort 2012
collection looked very elegant. Prints were interesting but sometimes the combination of those looked a bit strange. If earlier designers had offered us to limit ourselves to one, maximum two prints, for Resort 2012 Pradasuggests us experimenting with at least three ones. The only rule she establishes is not to use huge prints.
Returning to accessories in Prada Resort 2012 collection I have to confess I’ve fallen in love with Prada shoes. My favorite pick is a pair of feminine black sandals with a crisscross detail in front. I also love the simple green leather clutch and the bigger black one with red heart print all over it.

AVENTADOR
J
RADICALLY OPEN EXTREMELY POWERFUL At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Automobili Lamborghini presented the most uncompromising open super sports car of its entire history. The Lam¬borghini Aventador J is a force of nature on wheels – supremely powerful and supremely open. The Aventador J offers its pilot and co-pilot an utterly indescribable experience of power and dynamics. At the same time, the 515 kW / 700 hp two-seater is a first class technology showcase, com¬bining innovative solutions and brand new materials and demonstrating Automobili Lamborghini’s enormous expertise in carbon fiber technology.
June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
Automobiles
The Lamborghini Aventador J is a radically open automobile – exterior and interior meld into each other. The designers and engineers in Sant’Agata Bolognese have not only dispensed entirely with the roof, but also with the front windshield. This requires that drivers of the Aventador J must have the right equipment for driving at top speeds higher than 300 Km/h. This kind of driving at the limit is a highly exclusive experience – the Lamborghini Aventador J is fully functional for road use. It is an absolute one-off: a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
The Lamborghini Aventador J is a super sports car of positively dramatic single-mindedness and openness. It combines the overwhelming performance of the Lamborghini Aventador with the most intense experience of power and dynamics imaginable in an automobile.

Automobiles
The technical basis for the Aventador J is the Aventador LP 700-4, Lamborghini’s new twelve-cylinder model. Presented in 2011, the Aventador has been acclaimed by customers and journalists alike. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4’s technology package is unique – its structure is based on an innovative monocoque made from carbon fiber reinforced polymers that combines systematic lightweight design with optimum stiffness and safety. The new twelve-cylinder with a displacement of 6.5 liters and 515 kW / 700 hp combines the best in high-revving thrills with mighty pulling power. Its super-fast ISR transmission, permanent all-wheel drive and push-rod suspension combine this potent power with the utmost handling precision. Naturally, the Aventador J benefits enormously from this unique technology package. Yet the Aventador J has a signifi¬cantly different interpretation to the Aventador coupé. In this open version, the monocoque has a largely new design, including the two safety bars behind the seats. The absence of a roof, of the large windshield, of the air conditioning system and of the navigation system obviously takes it to an even lower weight. With a dry weight of 1575 kilograms, the series production Aventador LP 700-4 is already extremely light for its performance class thanks to its carbon fiber construction. The front of the Aventador J is somewhat narrower than that of the Aventador. The front end is dominated by a highly distinctive carbon fiber air scoop, with central fixing braces and upward tilting winglets on the outer edges. Viewed from the side, the front end of the Aventador J looks like a Formula 1 racing car.
June 2012 www.thecitymagazine.net
Automobiles
The Aventador J’s exterior and interior forms flow seamlessly into each other. This supersports car turns its inside out¬ward and is as open as it can possibly be. Conversely, the exterior ‘flows’ through the interior – a red stripe runs from the front hood, between the two wind deflectors, over the dashboard, down the console to the center tunnel and back up between the seat backs, before leaving the interior and heading for the engine cover panel. However, at the end of the Geneva Motor Show, this sight is the preserve of just one – the owner of the Lamborghini Aventador J. There is only one of them, no prototypes and no others for the Lamborghini Museum. The buyer can look forward to a truly unique, street-legal work of art. He will possess the most extreme expression of Lamborghini DNA in existence and a real masterpiece of high technology. But the many other fans of the super sports cars from Sant’ Agata Bolognese can rest assured - the Aventador success story has only just begun.

HOROSCOPES
Johnny Depp BORN: JUNE 9, 1963 - OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY, USA
June Planet Overview:
A Lunar Eclipse and Neptune retrograde muddy the waters on June 4. Confusion could reign at work and in personal affairs. As Capricorn Pluto continues its steady transformation of life and work as we know it, the added challenge from irreverent Uranus could cause a logjam in decisiveness this month. Too much information can be as bad as too little, and clarity is at a premium. The missing clarity may not get restored until the June 19 New Moon in Gemini. Saturn, planet of career success, turns direct on June 25 and is aided and abetted by Venus turning direct on June 27. The end of the month should see a breakthrough in business activity.
Known mostly for his portrayal of quirky characters, you get the feeling that this Gemini Twin is quite the character himself in real life. Johnny has provided the world with entertaining movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice in Wonderland. His movies have grossed over $2.6 billion in the U.S. alone. He also has numerous award nominations that prove he’s not only beloved by his fans but well respected by his peers.

You’ll meet several people this month who can help you in your career. Try to attend as many networking and career development events as you can fit in. Share your contact information and be willing to talk about your skills and accomplishments, but remember to listen to others, too. Conversations should be light, though, and not feel like interviews. You can make a new start if you’re proactive. Personal relationships will be complicated by misunderstandings and confusion. Be clear about what you want and expect, but have compassion for your partner. Mars in your sign will help you be productive.
