What is Ramadan?
I
t’s the Holy Month in the Islamic Calendar, where Muslims fast from sunup to sundown for approximately 30 days. The dates move around, judged by the placement of the sun and moon. The start and end of Ramadan will be declared the day before.
Do I have to be Muslim to partake?
Not at all! Many iftars and suhoors are geared as a way to bring the entire community together. Even if you’re not fasting, you are still welcome.
What’s iftar?
Iftar is the meal to break the fast after sunset. Typically, people will eat traditional small food like dates, dried apricots and Ramadan juices, before heading to evening prayer. After that, large meals are the norm, usually with family and friends. Traditional foods in Bahrain include barbecue, biryiani rice and whole roasted animals like lamb and sometimes, rumor has it, baby
camels. In Bahrain, big spreads of Lebanese mezze and international dishes are also popular, with many hotels offering sprawling buffets.
What is suhoor?
Suhoor is a meal taken just before sunrise, before the day of fasting starts. It often takes the form of a fun party starting just after iftar and ghabqa. Many hotels host smaller buffets, entertainment and more to celebrate until the wee hours of the morning.
What is Eid and why are there two? Eid al Fitr and Eid Al-Adha
are two celebrations at the end of Ramadan. Eid al Fitr translates as the ‘festival of breaking the fast’, and happens immediately after Ramadan, with day-time feasts. Family and friends gather in their best clothes and go visiting baring gifts - expect traffic to increase in the days leading up to this, as people hurry to get new clothes, haircuts, henna and procure all the sweets and ingredients for their feasts plus
buys presents – lots of the shops and car showrooms have amazing deals around this time. There’s also a charitable obligation, to make sure the poor in the community have enough food to celebrate themselves. Eid Al Adha translates as the"festival of sacrifice’, and that’s just what it is: traditionally, animals like sheep and goats are slaughtered. It’s roughly 70 days after the end of Ramadan and celebrates the end of the Hajj" the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It’s required to do the slaughtering (or at least witness) yourself, so expect to see live animals in the back of trucks all over the island – it’s often seen as a rite of passage for Muslim boys to participate. One third of the meat is kept for the family, another third is giving to friends and relatives and the last third is given to the needy. Each holiday typically lasts three days, so expect shops and businesses to be closed for at least some of the period.
Things to do in Ramadan
D
uring the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk for the entire month, an act that brings joy and contentment to every Muslim who experiences the practice. We pray that this blessed month brings divine blessings to all of us.
dedicate ourselves to the absolute power of the divine and refocus our lives to worshipping Him and Him alone. Each of us can develop an individual plan to benefit from and we can all do something extra to earn some additional grace from God, the Almighty.
This year, Muslims celebrate the month of fasting during some very challenging times. Islam and Muslims are under microscopic investigation. Every day new terms are coined to describe Islam. Sometimes, the believing Muslims are described as radical Islamists and Islamo-fascists. Often, our faith is linked with terror and we are accused of crimes that we ourselves discover when we open the front page of newspapers.
Here are a few suggestions that we can look into:
In times of difficulty, our only source of strength is our faith in the absolute power of God. We know that if we have His protection and guidance, we will be able to overcome all the challenges that surround us. This month of Ramadan is giving us yet one more opportunity to re-
• Let us make it a habit to visit the mosque as often as possible but atlas once a day with our families. • Let us make it a habit to break fast with fellow Muslims in the mosque at least once a week. • Let us invite our non-Muslim friends and neighbors to join us in the breaking of our fasts. • Let us pool our efforts and resources to feeding the homeless. • Let us be extra-generous and donate our money to worthy causes. • Let us encourage our children to offer taraweeh prayers with us at the mosque. • Let us at least try to complete read-
ing the Quran with meaning once.
• Let us ensure that we mend our relations with everyone regardless of the mistakes on the part of others. • Let us spend some time in seclusion at night praying to the Almighty. • Let us ensure that we will not hurt anyone and control our anger in all situations • Let us spend more time with our families especially in breaking the fast. • Let us make sure that we don't miss our Fajr prayer and pray all the other prayers on time. • Let us donate at least one book on Islam to a local library. • Let us ensure that we offer Zakat ul Fitr ahead of Eid prayers so that the poor and the needy can make use of it in an appropriate manner. Let us place our trust in Allah in everything that we do. May Allah accept our ibada.
Tarawih
Special prayers at night during ramadan.
Fajr
Dawn, daybreak. there is the "false dawn" which rises without spreading out, and the"true dawn" in which the light rises and spreads. it also means the dawn prayer. among the malikis, it desig nates the two sunna rak'ats before the obligatory subh prayer while others use fajr and subh interchangeably..
Zakah al-Fitr
A small obligatory head-tax imposed on every Muslim who has the means for himself and his dependants. It is paid once yearly at the end of Ramadan before Eid al-Fitr.
Ibadah
Literally, "worship," this term refers to any and all acts which demonstrate obedience and commitment to God. Thus in Islam, visiting the sick, giving charity, hugging one's spouse, or any other good act is considered an act of ibadah.

Fasting: Freedom for Body, Mind, and Soul!
Dear Readers, Happy Ramadan! Remember this not the time for underachievement, delay in executive decisions, waste of time, and overloaded bellies! It is time for cleansing, spiritual growth, compassion, and FREEDOM!
R
amadan, the fasting month in Islam, is yet another cleansing ritual for a better wellbeing. Most religions and spiritual paths have fasting rituals to better guide humanity to a compassionate world. And I am sure you have read so many studies and articles about the reasons and benefits of fasting in Islam; however, this article is not about these cliché factors. In fact, this article is about another perspective of fasting that many people may not think about. This concept is Freedom!
Free Your Body Detoxify:
From a medical perspective, fasting has been a controversial topic because every body handles fasting in a different manner. Not every body is equipped physically or psychologically to deal with the process of fasting especially abstaining from food and drink the whole day. However, it is a
July 2012 14
blessing that fasting in Ramadan is assigned to the healthy and the able. Many of you may think that abstaining food and drink is a “restriction” of freedom. But in fact, it is a process of detoxification: a process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through internal organs. From an alternative medicine perspective, the fat reserved in our bodies is used for energy and releases the chemicals from the fatty acids into the system, which are then eliminated through the body organs. Think of it as a “restart button” for the body to rejuvenate and revive. We enter a state of sleep everyday to rest our bodies and to be able to continue with our roles as effective beings;
however, our internal organs work 24/7 to keep us alive! The process of detoxifying allows these organs to deconstruct their routine cycles and regenerate energy for the overall body. Fasting allows your body to leave behind the routine that sustains fat and emerges in a process of releasing it and letting it go!
Heal Your Vessel:
Another effective part of this detoxification is healing. During fasting, the body diverts its energy from the digestive system to the immune system; thus, allow healing. The body will be in constant search for energy and will help ill areas in the body feed on the released energy when possible. Moreover, the body temperature decreases during fasting and enters a phase of slower metabolism and bodily function. This allows other parts of the body to set free and flourish like growth hormones.
Extend Your Life Span:
Age is not equivalent to the “calendar years”, a concept of time thathumans developed. It is measured by the health of the cells in your body! If fasting helps in the above factors, it is logical to say that fasting increases life span. Health begins on the cellular level; therefore, treat every cell in your body as a living organism. Pay attention to it and it will flourish. The decline of healthy cells may be caused by the constant accumulation of waste products in various tissues, which interferes with nourishment, and oxygenation of the cell. And if “we are what we eat”, then it is logical to help our cells to renew
through the kind of food intake or restriction. That is why there is a direct relation between food intake and cancer survival! And remember, fasting is not starving yourself, it is just allowing your body to enter that mode for certain hours of the day to adjust bodily functions.
Free Your Mind
Let go of Addictions and Unhealthy Habits: Addiction is a state of mind that tricks you in feeling dependable on a certain substance, habit, lifestyle, and more. It makes you believe that pleasure derived from the addiction routine is a source of comfort and stimulation. When you fast, think of it as a process of letting go of these addictions rather than treating the abstinence as a “restriction” again. Think of it as: Freeing your body from the ugly smoking habits. • Letting go of your usual excessive caffeine intake. • Liberating yourself from gossip at work every morning. • Leaving your thoughts behind.
dysfunctional
• Renewing eating habits: make less food and don’t overeat! • Pushing away bad temper and the list goes on! Fasting guides us to patience, one of the important factors of breakinga habit. To train yourself to let go of your “needy” addictions and habits is not an easy task. Use the fasting process to trick your body and your mind into taking the first step. It is stronger when faith, belief, and rules are united to break a habit.
Restore Your Good Self
Fasting is also the abstinence of your “bad self”! Think of it as if you are letting your EGO take a break from all the individualistic decisions and think with your “true” self for a change. Deep inside your mind, you are fully aware of what is “wrong” and “right”. I am not talking about Ramadan’s “DOs and DON’Ts”…take a deeper look inside you and listen to your inner conscience and unleash it from its EGO chains. Time to put your good self to work at least for a month! Is that asking to much? Consider it a detoxification of behavior: change your thoughts about yourself and others so you can actually produce effective behavioral patterns towards self and society.
Pray and Meditate
Muslim prayers are a direct connection to Allah. Daily prayers are assigned, special words are recited, and certain actions take place to symbolize the Muslim prayer. So you remembering to pray 5 times a day is actually not the only praying in Ramadan! The act of fasting is an active worship process that involves self-discipline, community services, and family reconnection! Pray beyond the mosque visits…pray beyond the individualistic connection with god…pray to be an effective member of the society and help others rather than just thinking about yourself. I believe that praying and meditation should often take an active role in your life rather than a passive one that targets self only.
Free Your Soul
Be Compassionate:
The major principal of fasting is compassion. Compassion is having the sense of empathy and feeling the suffrage of others. It is a form of love that we, as humans, develop to others to build a greater society and connection to others. Free your love from the individualistic cage and allow yourself to love others. Fasting is about feeling the pain of others who are less fortunate in income, food intake, social stability, and health! It is not enough for you to feed others and give Zakat if you are just doing it as part of the Ramadan routine. Take a step forward and try to actually understand and feel those in need. Every religion and spiritual path calls for compassion but people tend to overload themselves with rules and step away from the most important factor of “living”: connectedness to others. Put yourself in their shoes and learn how to be compassionate.
Be Nice:
Being nice is an act of compassion. Do not let the caffeine withdrawal, sleep deprivation, and over eating habits stain your attitude towards people. Be nice to your surroundings and treat them well because this is an action of worship. What is the use of fasting when you mistreat people? Try to smile and provide comfort to other people so they can comfort you as well. If you fully understand how your body is freeing itself when fasting, you will feel better about yourself and gain positive energy that is reflected on you and others. If you cannot comprehend your fasting, prevent your mood from impacting others. When you are upset or angry it is difficult to be nice to people. You need to recognize when you are in a bad mood and actively keep that mood from affecting your surroundings.
Be Generous:
Give a little so others can live a little! Unleash some of your pocket change and give people in need. If you don’t have the money, provide charity in your own way like providing food, clothes, or/and shelter. Give a segment of time to others and try to help people overcome their problems. Listen to those who need support and love; sometimes all they need is a warm heart to heal. Try to understand what someone else is going through so you can learn new ways to help others. I hope these words rejuvenated your sense of wonder… we are existing vessels who live and learn everyday. Conduct your spiritual path with humbleness and may this month be a joyful learning experience to you and your loved ones. Happy Ramadan, people!

Ramadan is Happier with Mars-Venus
" hat really matters for success, character, happiness and life long achievements is a definite set of emotional skills - your EI - not just purely W cognitive abilities that are measured by conventional IQ tests."
Dear readers, it is such a pleasure to connect with you once again this month. Ramadan, one of my favorite times of the year, is known for its spiritual feeling and its social bonding atmosphere. Families and friends come together to break their fast, socialize and bond during this special time. Unfortunately, this socialization and interaction with people can cause frustration and stress. Many feel that there is tension when talking with people and this affects them negatively. As a Mars Venus Life/Business Coach, I am often connected with people who are struggling with interpersonal relationships who ask me: “How can I become more effective with dealing with my husband, wife, colleagues, boss, friends, business partner, etc…?” Often times, those who seek assistance ask me for guidance on how to deal with miscommunication and misunderstandings that plague relationships. So, in hopes of assisting you this Ramadan and making it a happier time of the year, let’s shed the light on a special kind of intelligence, emotional intelligence (EI).
M
ost of us are well acquainted with IQ and know that IQ tests are used to assess logical reasoning and technical intelligence. Unfortunately, IQ is often only a prerequisite for entering the job market and does not guarantee success in your job or with your personal relationships. IQ, which measures cognitive intelligence, is often tied to right vs. wrong or black vs. white. Contrastingly, EI deals with the wide spectrum of gray that individuals feel, think, and believe in their interactions with others. The reality is, the world is filled with all sorts and types of people and the degree of success in your life, personally or professionally, is mostly based on EI rather than IQ. Emotional intelligence or refers to the ability to correctly detect, assess and understand emotions and use this information to control and evaluate your emotions and the emotions of those around you. Dr. John Gray, author of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” adds the gender aspect to this intelligence. Dr. Gray explains that men and women deal with emotions very differently and it is vital to understand these differences in the realm of emotional intelligence. Gender sensitive emotional intelligence clarifies the similarities and differences between Martian and Venusian’s expressions of emotion. From the perspective of Mars Venus philosophies, gender-based emotionally intelligence is vital in today’s world.
To better explain the concept of EI further, Dr. Salovey and Dr. Mayer proposed a model that identified four different steps of emotional intelligence:
Sensing Emotions: The first step in EI is sensing your emotions and the emotions of those around you accurately. Tune your awareness towards analyzing verbal and nonverbal signals which include body language, facial expressions, etc... Observe yourself and others in different situations and with different people. A great way to get in touch with what you are feeling is to keep a private journal of thoughts that fill your mind during the day. Monitor your emotional scale and the emotional scale of others beyond the subsurface. Keep in mind that men and women react and deal differently to emotions, and accordingly, they express these emotions differently. If we were to observe and sense a Martian and a Venusian under stress, they would exhibit very different emotions. When Martians are stressed they withdraw, become distant, and do not want to talk about the issue. Dr. John Gray calls the Martian withdrawal as “going to the cave”. Contrastingly, when Venusians are stressed, they seem to want to reach out for comfort and connection. So, if you have a Venusian who wants to chat or discuss, she is probably stressed. July 2012 16
Assessing Emotions: The next step is to use emotions to promote cogni-
tive activity in order to set the prioritization levels of what we pay attention and react to (now vs. later). Keep in mind, though, when we feel happy our brains work very differently than when we feel unhappy or stressed. On this note, beware of extreme emotional states as they can restrict mental reasoning and can be detrimental to dealing with the situation at hand. Dr. Gray talks a great deal in regards to how men and women deal with and prioritize their challenges. When stressed, men prefer to deal with one issue at a time and can insulate themselves from extreme emotional reaction. They are known for going into their caves and privately thinking of how to solve the issue at hand. If the issue cannot be solved at this time, Martians tend to temporarily ignore it. Contrastingly, when a Venusian is stressed she widens her perspective and thinks of the many avenues of her life this issue will effect like her finances, her family, her career, etc… As a multi-tasker the Venusian likes to tackle multiple issues at one time and is more known to become emotionally involved in these tasks. Unlike the Martian, she cannot forget about the issue and we can see her often connecting with others until her challenge is solved.
Translating Emotions: The third step is to take the emotions that we
have sensed and observed and translate them into meaning. It is vital to remember that our perception can carry a wide variety of meanings which are based on our personal experiences and not necessarily the true message that is being passed. It is important to ‘correctly’ translate our emotions and the emotions of those around us. Mars Venus philosophies stress the importance of translation. Dr. Gray often says that the problem isn’t that men and women are different, the problem is that they have forgotten they are different and speak different languages. When a Martian is stressed, he does not want to talk to anyone. To a woman this is something that is foreign to her because on Venus when someone is stressed they want to talk to a loved one. Accordingly, the Martian’s reaction can cause the Venusian to mis-translate his actions to mean that he does not love her. This is not the case at all, the Martian is just thinking. On the other hand, when Venusians become stressed and want to talk to de-stress, Martians often mis-translate this as a request to solve her problem and offer advice, which is not the case at all. For Venusians, just chatting allows them to de-stress. So it is clear that translation seriously affects the degree of success of a relationship.

Managing Emotions: The ability to manage emotions effectively is a key part of emotional intelligence. Regulating emotions, responding appropriately, and responding to the emotions of others are all important aspects of emotional management. Dr. John Gray preaches the importance of effective communication between Martians and Venusians especially in times of stress and anxiety. Effective communication never includes blame and criticism for the other’s actions. Emotional punches will only tear at the fabric of the relationship and may reach a point where it cannot be mended. When you feel the need to discuss an issue, make sure that all parties involved are not emotionally charged and are ready to listen. Make sure to objectively and clearly pass your concern without including emotional undertones which may be mis-interpreted. Remember to always look at many perspectives to the problem and understand the other’s point of view. In conclusion, emotional intelligence is a vital skill in this day and age that can be learned and perfected with focus and practice. It has become clear that those who are able to understand and master this craft will become more successful in all aspects of their lives. These individuals understand what message is being passed and how to correctly pass their own message. Dear readers, I have briefly provided you with the starting point to incorporating gender based EI into your lives. There is much more to learn in regards to the broad subject and I encourage you to explore this topic. You may be thinking about attending trainings or reading books on the subject, but the truth of the matter is, if you don’t apply the knowledge on a daily basis with guidance and supervision of an expert, the results will not be substantial. For those who would like to quickly and effectively master this skill, the best way is to work with a Mars Venus life coach who has been trained to pass this skill in a clear and timely manner. There is no need to waste any more of your time floundering, we can help. I wish you a very happy and emotionally sound Ramadan filled with great connections! If you have any questions, comments, or stories, I would love to connect with you.

Good Health in Ramadan
Once again, we are on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan. With merely days to go, millions in Kuwait and across the world are in great anticipation for this special period. Islamic tradition mandates fasting and abstinence during this month in direct observance to Allah. This practice is indented to teach/remind Muslims the virtues of patience, self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, empathy for those less fortunate, generosity, charity, humility and submission to the Supreme Being. As a result, it is in each Muslim’s best interest to have their daily activities be in accord with this month’s command.
O
ften times, with the hustle and bustle in our present lives we tend to re-direct our focus. Each of us can easily get distracted by a tweet here, and a text there. Nevertheless, the growing array of technological applications are providing ways to assist with this dilemma. For example, picture it, it’s been a year since you’ve last fasted, and that last period was tremendously difficult for you. You were so hungry after the first day, and the welcoming doors of a buffet-style restaurant was the perfect end to your daily struggle. You got there and ate as though you were out in the wilderness and needed every bit of nourishment to bring your body back to life. You then tried to sleep, but either had a severe case of indigestion or increased levels of bathroom visits thought the night. Nevertheless you made it through the night and found yourself ready for another day’s fast. Only this time your plan was different. This time, you decided to consume as much as you could before your fast began, hoping that this will be a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, the above-mentioned practice is quite common, as we can make bad preparations for this period by choosing inappropriate qualities and quantities of foods and beverages. These choices in fact obstruct our body’s ability to compensate with sudden shifts in eating habits. Moreover, this inability to compensate is enhanced when one is exposed to adverse conditions, namely extreme desert temperatures. As a result, we should strive to July 2012 18
maintain a well-balanced diet that consists of fruits, vegetables, meat/ chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products when fasting. Specifically, you should aim to consume complex carbohydrates like cereal, grain, brown rice and peas, which provide the slow release of energy to reduce hunger cravings.Dates and bananas are also an excellent source of sugar (energy), fiber, carbohydrates, and essential nutrients like potassium and magnesium. One should also limit the consumption of fried foods and those high in sugar. Coffee and other diuretics should be limited because of their abilities to increase urination and the loss of essential salts and nutrients, which would be regularly replenished when one is not constricted by fasting. It is also helpful to drink as much water, fruit juices and non-caffeinated energy drinks like Gatorade as possible between iftar and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time. Be careful to not indulge in the consumption of large concentrations of acidic compounds that can throw off your body’s pH level (or acid/alkaline balance). With increased levels of acidity or lower pH levels can come the plague of acidosis, which if left uncontrolled, can wreak havoc on your essential internal organs like the heart, stomach, liver and kidney causing irreparable damage. Furthermore, in an effort to aid Kuwait’s fast growing pre-diabetic and diabetic populations, a national campaign was launched to provide a Ramadan “app service” and diabetic
friendly drug, Januvia, to assist individuals to monitor and regulate their sugar blood levels. This project is expected to aid the many diabetics fasting during Ramadan, as fasting can increase hypoglycemia levels.Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) severely reduces your capacity to perform basics functions as your energy levels decrease. Overtime, this situation can lead to lethargy and chronic tiredness. If you combine your reduced energy levels with soaring desert temperatures, later sunsets, and a propensity for fast driving, then my friends you have a recipe for disaster, as it has been shown that there’s a correlation between hypoglycemia and road accidents. On the other hand, proper blood sugar regulation is needed as physicians anticipate significant increases in blood sugar because
diabetics generally do not follow an appropriate diet during this period. Thus, these methods can assist diabetics to continue their fast without breaking the sacredness of fasting and adversely affecting their health. So my friends, as you enter into the holy month and observe your religious obligations, I urge you to be mindful of your daily practices, especially if you have health problems. As cliché as it may sound, you have a significant level of control over your own health. Thus, as you strive to be a more patient, self-disciplined, generous, charitable, and humble individual, also aim to be a healthier person. Happy Ramadan!

Make this Ramadan your best ever!
N
Did you know that you have the choice and the ability to make this Ramadan as awesome and positive as you wish for it to be? Let’s explore how.
ow, for all of us Ramadan is coming, and we will experience it. Each one of us will find something new, different and interesting in the way we experience it. We would be able to distinguish our varied experiences by telling them to each other, and in doing so we will find we have similar challenges, and/ or differing outlooks. You needn’t be Muslim only to experience Ramadan. In fact if it is your first Ramadan as a non Muslim in an Islamic culture this will be a time that you will be able t explore, learn and seek to understand what goes on during this month, what drives people to fast in this heat and what keeps their spirits energised throughout this period. Being a Muslim, it may be your first time in Kuwait this Ramadan, or perhaps the first time you fast in a summer like this, and even if there is nothing new for you really, you will still have a new and unique experience- an experience you choose to have. Ramadan is inevitable, it’s going to arrive and you will experience it anyway. Why not allow yourself to make this your ultimate experience thus far, an experience that is positive, fulfilling and one that brings joy to your heart and comfort to your soul. So how can we create this? See, our minds have filter systems, just like an air filter, that filters out the unwanted dust and
other muck in order to protect the environment around us, and in turn protect and look out for us. If we understand how our filter works we can use it to optimise our thoughts about certain things. We have the power to choose if we will filter out negative thoughts, and people from our minds, and to what extent we protect our minds from absorbing negative energy. Having positive thoughts, translate into us feeling great. And when we feel great our actions demonstrate and glow in this greatness. By turning on our filters, we can choose the thoughts we want to have about Ramadan, we can choose who influences them. Would we allow complaints and moans and groans from others through our filters? Or are we going to seek out those positive people who illuminate with joy and abundance this Ramadan? The choice is yours! Ramadan is a great opportunity to seek out its blessings and mercies, as they are abundant. And once we know what they are for us, we can focus on enveloping ourselves in the feelings these blessings bring to us, visualising how they will assist us in our own self-development and growth. We can grab opportunities to serve others in our communities, and watch how we can create a ripple effect on the people around us. These are some affirmations that you could choose to rewrite and read every so often, or you may choose to come up with your own specific ones as you find new meanings that this month holds for you.
My hunger pangs remind me to reflect on the poor, those in war zones, and the vulnerable. I am more conscious about caring for and conserving the earth that Allah has blessed me with. As my fast begins I reflect on building and enhancing relationships with my loved ones I create avenues to strengthen my family ties, through prayer and mealtimes. As I fast, I gain inner strength and success The more grateful I am to my Creator, the more gratitude I am able to find around me I am fortunate to be blessed with another Ramadan, and accept it with joy I have a powerful inner strength in mind and body this Ramadan I release any fears in me and allow Ramadan’s blessings to shower me I attract healthy eating and lifestyle habits I believe in myself and my ability to fast with complete submission to my Creator As Ramadan embarks, so does my level of spirituality and faith to please my Creator I choose Imaan, I choose sisterhood/ brotherhood, I choose community and giving,
Ramadan brings me energy and a new spirit of self-reflection. My heart is open to generosity and kindness. As Ramadan grows on me so does compassion and empathy. I become more conscious about my words and thoughts. Ramadan propels me to look for creative ways to help others, my environment and Allah’s creatures. My hunger pangs draw me towards reflecting on my eating habits, towards simplicity and whole foods

Zahra Taqi Certified Professional Coach President of Milestones Coaching
A life coach talks about her passion and ambition Zahra Taqi is a certified lifecoach who has a strong passion for helping others. She took this passion into what she saw to be the next level, and is now a parenting coach and a personal and professional coash. She spoke to theCity about her passion and ambition. How would you introduce yourself?
My name is Zahra Taqi. I was raised by parents who were and still are very passionate about helping people. That has definitely rubbed off on me. Helping someone reach a goal or achieve something gives me such a kick. It’s an indescribable feeling that keeps reassuring me that I’m on the right track. I’m also a wife and mother of two wonderful children. I’m passionate about my marriage and parenthood, and these passions shaped my life and made me who I am today.
dealing with children. Parents always want to do the best for their kids but many times are not sure of what that ‘best’ thing is. This is where I come in as a parent coach. I partner with my clients and become a sounding board to them, I brainstorm with them on whatever issues they are having until we reach a solution that is right for the parents and the child.
Let’s talk about your education and career.
At Milestones I offer three different kinds of coaching: parent coaching, life coaching and executive coaching.
I studied in the field of speech-language pathology and audiology. I earned my degree from Northeastern University in Boston and later worked in Boston for a while at an early intervention center, a school for blind children and also at the Speech and Hearing clinic at Northeastern University before returning back to Kuwait. In Kuwait I worked at Sheikh Salem Al Ali Center for Speech and Audiology at Al Sabah Hospital. The time I spent there was very inspiring as I worked with a great team of professionals from Kuwait and abroad. While there I worked as both a therapist and a mentor to new incoming graduates. The experience there helped me make the move into coaching. As a coach, I help my clients reach their goals and enable them to translate their dreams into realities. After working for a few years at Al Sabah hospital, I moved with my husband and children to Tokyo, Japan. I earned certificates to be a life coach, parent coach and an executive coach. I feel blessed to have followed a roadmap in my career until I have reached this stage.
Tell us about your family?
Our hose was sort of a hub for our extended family. Relatives came and went asking my parents for advice about different things. My parents are known for being avid learners who strongly advocate education and learning. One of my strongest memories of my parents and learning was during the Iraqi invasion. At that time I was 9, my sister 8 and my brother 3. We were in Kuwait throughout the entirety of the invasion, and like all Kuwaiti citizens in Kuwait at the time in defiance to the invasion, my parents did not send us to school. Instead they created a makeshift school at home. The day would start with us pledging allegiance to the Kuwaiti flag, then my dad would spend two hours teaching us Arabic and social studies. We would then have a ‘recess’ after which my mom would teach us math and science. I always remember this time, and how, unintentionally, they not only taught us, but showed us how important education and learning is, and this has stuck with me to this day.
What made you move to Japan?
We moved to Japan because of my husband’s job back in 2009 and it has been a wonderful experience.
Have you picked up any Japanese language so far?
Yes, but I’m not fluent. Since moving to Tokyo, my husband and I decided that in order to make the most out of our experience and to integrate our selves in Japanese society, we would have to learn the language and so that’s exactly what we have been doing since moving here.
How did you decide to start Milestone coaching?
I have a passion to help people and coaching allows me to do exactly that. One of my specialties as a coach is parent coaching which I feel is very helpful to many parents especially in Kuwait. I have talked to so many parents and worked with many more who were sometimes at a loss when it came to
What are the different services or coaching provided by Milestone coaching?
What is the process of your coaching?
Before I start coaching any client, I always offer a complimentary exploratory session to see if the client and I would be fit for a coaching relationship. If we both decide to go forward with the coaching relationship then we start the coaching process. I also ask all of my clients to commit to a minimum of 12 sessions to see any true and tangible change.
What satisfies you once a coaching is completed?
My client’s success! Nothing beats the feeling I get when my client has an ‘aha’ moment or finds a solution or is successful in whatever issue he/she sought help for. This feeling is why I got into coaching to begin with.
What is difference or advantage you provide over other coaching or consulting services?
There are some great coaching practices popping up in Kuwait, which is a great thing. It really warms my heart to see people taking the lead and doing something outside of the typical jobs you see every day. The first difference is that I am certified by an accredited program by the International Coaching Federation. I also think my background, as a speech therapist is definitely an advantage especially when working with parents. I have also lived and worked in distinctively three very different cultures; Kuwait, USA and Japan and I think this has taught me a lot in terms of different work ethics and what I like to call ‘office culture’. Also I do all my coaching either on the phone or through skype, which means that my clients don’t need to schedule 30 minutes to drive to my office and 30 minutes to drive back home plus coaching time. All that my client needs to do is get comfortable in a quiet place at his/her home and we are ready to go!
How do you manage to balance your work and family life?
My family is my passion. They are my source of inspiration and my pillar of strength. So to me they always come first. But I also love what I’m doing so I have split my time between work and family. When I’m with my family then I am dedicated to them wholeheartedly and I try to keep work out of my mind. Then when its time for work I am able to focus and I also feel content that I have done my part and that I did not neglect my family. I also have to admit that all of this would not be possible without my husband, Mohammed’s continuous help and support. He is an amazing husband and an amazing dad and our partnership has definitely enabled the balance between my family and my work.
Tell us one interesting thing that you learnt in Japan and that has helped you.
Karma! From my experience, the Japanese people are among the nicest, most courteous and most helpful people in the world. If I’m in the train station and having trouble lifting our monster double stroller, without even asking anyone for help, there will be at least two people running to help! This, I found, very www.thecitymagazine.net 23

unusual and finally I asked one of my Japanese friends, how come almost every one goes out of their way to be helpful? She said: “We believe in karma and that if you do something good to someone today, when you need help at some other time, you will definitely get the help we needed”. Another remarkable trait and something that my husband and I admire about the Japanese people is their love to their country and their loyalty. We saw it first hand after the Tohoku Earthquake in March 2011. The Japanese did not complain, they did not loot or run wild. Instead, they were all helping each other and working extremely hard to rebuild the cities that were destroyed as a result of the devastating disaster.
Where do your clients come from?
Literally all over the world! I have clients in Japan, Hong Kong, USA, and of course Kuwait. As long as the client has internet access and a reliable computer or smart phone, I can work with him/her. I experience on a daily basis how the internet has turned this vast world into a village!
Your message for the people of Kuwait?
Do not let anyone discourage you of your dreams or aspirations. If you have an idea in mind just do it. That’s all it takes. I once read a fabulous quote
that goes something like this: “If you want your dreams to come true, the first thing you have to do is wake up!” Dreams are vital and important to keep us going, but dreaming alone will not get you where you want. You need to dream, you need to have clear vision, and after these two steps you need ACTION.
How is Ramadan in Japan? Do you miss Kuwait during Ramadan? Ramadan always has a different atmosphere and taste in Kuwait so in the past we have always gone back to spend it with our family and friends. However this year will be different as we will be spending it in Tokyo and we are already trying to think of ways to make it special and to replicate that 'Ramadan feeling' for our children. One of the biggest things about being an expat is trying to instill your values in your children and helping them to be proud of who they are and where they come from, which I think we have succeeded in doing. Now we have to extend it to Ramadan and replicate Gergean for our kids which should be a lot of fun (and very authentic). I can already imagine a Kuwaiti/Japanese Gergean! Now thats an idea to get excited about!
Gorgeous inside out and extremely talented, this girl decided to follow her passion and knows exactly what she’s doing. With her attention to detail, creativity and hard work, this young lady who started from scratch knows where she’s going, and let me tell you she’s definitely going somewhere! I’m talking about jewelry designer Nada Waleed Alnafesi. I couldn’t end my visit without asking her some questions about her jewelry business, nwn.
F
or the exhibition, I wanted my jewelry to stand out and be displayed in a way that is different. I gathered portraits of famous Arab and Western actresses and singers. I printed them out all in the same size and all in black and white, and I made the portraits wear the jewelry. By using the portraits as a canvas to display the jewelry, I felt that I gave them the attention they deserved.
TELL US MORE ABOUT nwn نونDesigns?
My designs are simple, but special at the same time. They all have a different nwn نونtouch. All my designs and sketches are created with love. I divide the pieces I designed from each collection into three main categories: - Red Carpet: This category is for pieces that are most likely one of a kind, or pieces that have a lot of stones and diamonds. Red Carpet is perfect for weddings, and receptions. - Dine with me: A piece or two from this category are just what every woman should have. These pieces are the perfect items to complement your look for a night out. - Dailies: Dailies are the finishing touches that you need to complete your everyday look. You can browse through the designs either by their categories or by the collection's name.
WHO SUPPORTED YOU?
WHY nwn?
I wanted my jewelry brand to have my name but not in an obvious way. I was brainstorming with my family and my mom came up with the idea of nwn نون. nwn نونis short for Nada Waleed AlNafisi, and نونin Arabic both the first letter of my name, as well as my initials.
HOW DID YOU START?
I have always had interest in jewelry and accessories, but I couldn’t pursue a degree here in Kuwait. After graduating from Kuwait University and working in the banking field, I realized that designing jewelry is a passion that I have to take more seriously. I decided to do something about it, so in 2009 I took courses in jewelry design in the UK. Now I have a certificate in Jewelry Design and in other relevant courses. I started designing my collection about three years ago, and had my first exhibition in Beit Lothan in April 2012. July 2012 26
I'm blessed with a great family and wonderful friends. They have all shown support in a lot of ways. All of them have given me advice and guidance, but most of all I would like to thank my amazing mother and my husband.
DOES KUWAITI JEWELRY MEET THE QUALITY OF INTERNATIONAL BRANDS? Yes! In term of designs yes they do. We have a lot of talented Kuwaiti jewelry designers, and their designs are breath taking.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR SELF IN THE JEWELRY WORLD? I have just started in this field, so I’m definitely in the beginning. There are more things to be learned from experience, such as reading people’s preference and tailoring pieces according to that.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?
To be a well known successful jewelry designer, and to have people wearing nwn نون, both locally and internationally.
HOW CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR JEWELRY?

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Designing more collections, and learning more about jewelry.
WHEN IS YOUR NEXT EXPO & WHERE WILL IT BE HELD? It's going to be in September at Celebrate Exhibition.
WHAT IS YOUR MASSAGE TO theCity Magazine? I would like to thank theCity Magazine for giving me this amazing opportunity to show the world who nwn نونis. Thank you! and keep up the good job.

o we're just a few days away from our favorite month which is Ramadan!
Well, basically what’s not there to love about this wonderful month? The food, the gatherings, the most beautiful dara'as, the laughter, the joy, the shows and the list goes on Our favorite part is staying up late with our family to eat sohoor with them, and catch up on everything. We tend to sleep very late to wake up before futoor in a couple of hours, pray, read Quran and check out the Kuwaiti shows, in that way we don't feel very hungry and tired. Most of the time we hang out with our friends and family after futoor or we either work on "The Jeem." During Ramadan we get a lot of inspiration from everything around us. It’s the perfect timing for us to sketch down our thoughts. During the weekends we visit our grand parents just before prayers in a couple of hours to eat together. We enjoy being surrounded by them. And last but not least our traditional gerge'an chaos, we basically sit down and squeeze our brains to come up with new ideas. Every gerge'an we work with our mother to come up with creative and special packaging. We always go out together a few days before gerge'an to choose our favorite candy and the fun tiny toys that we put together for the kids to enjoy! Well, thats it for this issue! Hope you enjoyed it! www.thecitymagazine.net 29

CRM Strategy
Customer relationship management solutions are implemented in the hope of better managing information and customer relationships.
U
nfortunately, purchasing new CRM technology alone does not ensure greater customer satisfaction and wallet share. Businesses today are utilizing wide-ranging resources to better understand and resolve two critical management issues: inefficient operations in customer-facing business channels that require increasing numbers of employees and resources; and ineffective CRM practices, both which fail to retain customers or grow revenue. As the demand for business stability and growth accelerates, one thing remains constant: business value is driven by the precise combination and maximization of operational productivity. Many successful businesses have now taken steps to optimize the productive value of their internal business resources with the knowledge that management of these essential business assets (people, processes and technology) leads to operational stability and allows greater focus on managing and growing existing customers. It’s no secret that a strong focus on customers and their business relationships will lead to direct growth in revenue. These operational imperatives are the primary factors for strengthening a business’ profitability as well as its overall value and position in the marketplace. Strategic asset management is, in effect, CRM; and in its basic form today, CRM does work. However, ineffective management of internal business resources has served to reduce the CRM value proposition and has led to discussions about the validity and viability of CRM technology. The management of your organization’s internal business resources drives and July 2012 32
determines the value of your CRM strategy and its ultimate success. More specifically, businesses should focus their attention on just how knowledge workers interact with customers through the various channels and then identify appropriate methods of improving efficiency by using their existing internal resources. When a customer speaks with an agent in a contact center, they expect that agent to not only have their information readily available but also be able to handle their request efficiently. This ready access to customer information, immediate ability to resolve costumer issues, and seamless transition to offering further services is fundamental to ensuring costumer satisfaction. On the whole, CRM has been able to provide some of these features such as accessing information quickly and other shortcuts to improve productivity, but there is still more to be done. We have recognized the shortfalls of CRM and applied a solution that significantly improves customer management by creating an intelligent view of the customer. This solution is desktop integration, which extends CRM by providing data and process integration intelligently where and when
it is needed most – at the point of contact. By examining how knowledge workers use their current tools to provide service such as CRM and then using desktop integration to incorporate other internal and external business resources such as billing, inventory and others, businesses are able to create intelligent views of information that are specific to the context of their customer’s needs. From a CRM perspective, employees who interact with customers, either face-to-face or by contact media (voice, e-mail, fax, chat, etc.), have richer, more meaningful on-hand information at their desktops that enable them to enhance the customer’s transactional experience. These employees are able to affect a higher level of customer service and satisfaction, build stronger customer loyalty and increased customer retention. This, in turn, means increased customer revenue contribution. It’s important to note here that a small incremental increase in customer retention, even one percent, can mean a significant top line revenue increase of millions of dollars. Customer-facing business channels must establish themselves as major players on their company’s strategic management teams
by demonstrating that they can achieve the types of operational management gains that drive stronger corporate growth and higher profitability. Understanding and managing their businesses toward an effective and efficiently run operational management platform is an essential criterion for the success of the strategic management strategy. Desktop integration enables customer contact channels to meet the challenges of creating an increase in customer satisfaction and loyalty while improving employee productivity and reducing overall operating costs. Operations managers are able to effectively balance the strict business requirements of providing solid customer service delivery while managing higher operational efficiency and the effective control of operating expenses. When this balance of customer service delivery and operational efficiency is attained, the bottom-line results will report loyal, more satisfied, customers while operational productivity levels are more efficiently maintained and operating expenses are better controlled. Desktop integration enables the effective growth of customer revenue contribution while delivering the necessary operational management gains that result in higher operational efficiency. In today’s complex customer contact business world, balancing the delivery of world-class customer service with the corporate demands of operational efficiency management can affect the realization of increased corporate profitability. A ‘must have’ in today’s CRM business world, desktop integration is a business asset and value that not only enhances the customer experience but also adds to your company’s revenue.

Starting a New Business in the GCC
S
tarting a business involves making a firm decision. It is very critical to determine the credibility as well as the viability of your business idea. This is very essential in a sense that it will help to determine whether the idea will succeed or fail. One can involve friends, potential family members or any other successful business owners. This will offer any required advice one should require before starting the business. Such advice may include location, finance management and tailored map of the business among others. It is paramount to determine the kind of business to start. This will enable one to evaluate terms, which the business should obey since they tend to vary from state to state as well as from territory to territory. It also important to determine whether the business will involve partnership or sole ownership thus offering adequate information about the kind of management will the business will demand. According to Australian Government Initiative, business structure in another key factor one should consider in establishing a new business. One should ensure the structure is flexible to accommodate any probable change that may face the business down the road. In addition, the structure should also encourage participation of employees for the smooth running of the business. To be able to socialize with the employees well, one should learn effective communication skills. This will encourage new ideas from other organizational members, which consequently facilitates easy decision-making as well as problem solving. Apart from above important factors, there are various basics to consider before anyone makes a decision to start a business. First, it is important to consider the cash flow conjecture. This should predict the rational outcrop as well as the most awful circumstances, which may encounter the plan.
Secondly, it of great importance to consider the amount of capital you own. The capital should be adequate to cater for overheads without interfering with the income earned from the immediate sales. This is very crucial to allow enough room for expansion of the business. Thirdly, before commencing a business, one should establish a strong marketing campaign that will drive the products into the market. Such a campaign is essential in offering long-term sustainability of the business. In starting a new business, one should consider uniqueness of his or her idea. That is, he or she should consider the demand of the business in the market. For instance, one should create a business that will create demand among the customers to enhance the drive of the sales.

8 Things You Should Never Do At Work
A good majority of us spend 40 hours a week (or more) at the office. If you think about it, that’s more time than some of us manage to spend with our loved ones or children! Which kind of makes the office your second home… and that is exactly why we owe it to our co-workers and ourselves to be a little more considerate about how we behave.
Y
ou may be aware of general office etiquette such as the “correct” office attire, the use of mobile phones, and not stealing office stationary, but here is a list of things you should never ever do at work.
Publish something you might want to take back
It’s not just clients who have to be careful about going “on the record” but it applies to us all – what you say in your work e-mails and online chats can’t be deleted once sent. That’s pretty scary especially if you are in a company who monitors employee e-mail conversations! Of course, going on the record doesn’t just stop at emails or online chats – if your co-workers and even your bosses are amongst the hundreds (or thousands) of friends that you’ve added or approved on Facebook, then take heed. This first rule is simple – NO ranting or (excessive) complaining about work via status updates unless you are operating your Facebook under a pseudo name! Especially if you’re supposedly on sick leave at home (oops!)
Remove the filter during the coffee break talk
An article published by CBS News last year highlighted the importance of holding back from giving away “too much information”. Though subjective, this is another no-no. There are some areas that simply shouldn’t be divulged upon under any circumstance, such as imposing your strong political or religious views or updating people about your bowel movements.
Apologize for everything and nothing, really
Owning up to your mistakes is a humble and gracious gesture, but when that gesture is used and tested too many times, it will only make matters worse. Another tips from CBS News: a quick “sorry about that” is enough to resolve a minor issue; if it’s a big one, apologize face-to-face and in private, then move on with life (or in this case, work). “Don’t grovel, make promises you can’t keep, or anything else. Just man-up and leave it alone.” Enough said!
Interrupt those spending lunch hour at their desks
Some people choose to bring lunch from home or have takeout at their desk while utilizing the extra time to focus on their own tasks or even tune out from work by, say – reading interesting articles online! Just because they’re still in the office, it doesn’t mean that you can interrupt them and occupy their lunch hour with workrelated discussions. Imagine having just taken a third bite of your sandwich, right at the moment the YouTube video you’re watching gets really funny, and someone turns up to have you review an Excel spreadsheet. Kinda ruins the moment, doesn’t it?
Leave your mobile phone at your desk
If you have to leave your desk (even if it’s just for 30 seconds), always take your mobile phone with you – or put it on silent at least, because if someone happens to call in that moment, it can be very VERY distracting for everyone else to have to listen to your phone constantly ringing. On top of the noise, there’s also the question of your choice of customized ring tone (should you have one); not everybody wants to listen to the chorus of a pop song over and over again! So get your “shhh” on, or don’t leave your desk without your mobile phone or you may return to find it in your coffee! July 2012 36
Be the office sourpuss
Having a bad day at work? Feel like you’re struggling to complete tasks and meet deadlines? Find yourself discouraged or demotivated? If you can’t resolve it immediately, find ways to regain positivity. Step outside the building and stretch it out. Grab a chocolate muffin from the cafe if that would make you feel better. Complaining aloud about your workload, whining about others slowing you down or snapping at somebody just because you’re in a bad mood will dampen the atmosphere and drag everybody down with you. It’s okay to give yourself a break especially if it means sparing the sanity of those around you!
Refuse to get to know your team
It is understood that you are there because you have work to do – but do appreciate initiatives your co-workers take to provide a happier and friendlier working environment. It’s fine if you don’t want to head the party committee, but try to dedicate some time to get to know your co-workers better by attending that big group lunch or the little birthday party in the coffee room. Start having some non-work related fun
with your colleagues and see this translate into the work space as well.
Gossip about work or co-workers on company property Keep your juicy discoveries and personal beefs with your co-workers at home or as far away from the company zip code as possible. Or even better: focus on being as productive as you can be by avoiding gossip – period! It’s never healthy to indulge in dissing people behind their backs, especially if it could wind up affecting your career and trust us, it will. Gossip has a sneaky way of doing the office rounds before landing (in an exaggerated form) in the lap of the gossip victim so avoid the trouble by keeping quiet.

The Kitchen, a forgotten space
A statement I always hear from my clients: “I love to cook but my kitchen design is just not right!” And again the kitchen is always the last space addressed, if ever, in a design of a house. If you love to cook and you are about to design your dream house, then read on.
J
ust by understanding the basic principles of a kitchen layout, the mystery of the design process can made easy. The most basic layout principle is the work triangle. The work triangle is the line drawn between three primary work stations in the kitchen – the food storage, cooktop, and sink. The triangle legs should not be wide (distance wise), therefore, the three stations should be placed at comfortable distance for a person to maneuver between them. The three primary kitchen work stations which create the work triangle are: 1. Food storage–This is where you'll store your food whether it’s your refrigerator or the pantry. I also suggest that you have enough counter space beside your fridge to place items as you take them out.
2. The preparation/cooking station – This is the area where you
will have your oven, microwave, and smaller appliances. Counter space is important in this section, as you will use it to move stuff off and out of the oven and microwave.
3. The clean-up station – Every-
one’s least favorite activity is one of the kitchen’s most important – clean-up. This area is where the sink, waste disposal, and dishwasher are placed. Cabinetry for this station is designed to include the trash bin cabinet and roll-out tray baskets for storage convenience is placed in this section. Today, especially in modern family houses, the kitchen is probably more than just a place to cook and eat. You may choose to include a breakfast bar, desk, bookshelves, computer station, a TV or even a seating area to entertain guests. The work triangle is even modernized to adapt to today's modern kitchens. The work triangle was designed for an age when there was July 2012 40
only one cook, and only three appliances (fridge, stove, sink). Today as we all know this is way far than what we have in our kitchens... Here are a few hot tips for your work triangle as you design your space: • The distance between the stations (the legs of the triangle) should not be less than 130 cm and no more than 3. • There should be no human (well, or non human, of course) traffic flow cutting through the triangle. • Place the microwave near the refrigerator for convenience sake. • Walk space should be 100cm wide to account for traffic flow and clearance of large appliance doors or large relatives. • Counter space on either side of the fridge, sink or cooktop should be a minimum of 40cm • The fridge side counter should be adjacent to the fridge on the same side as the handle. • The food prep area (minimum counter space 90cm) is ideally located between the fridge and the sink; otherwise it will involve more of travel. • A lower surface is best for food prep (measuring 17-20cm below your elbow height) • An island with a second sink creates at least one more triangle, and adaptable to many uses: wet bar location, flower cutting and arranging, homework station etc. Now let us see the different types of layouts and the idle use of each:
The single kitchen
I would suggest solution for narrow rooms, ideally with one wall over 3 meter, without windows or doors. However, this layout creates the longest travel distances since you
often have to walk from one end of the room to the other. Therefore, it’s a good idea to place the sink in the middle of the line, with adequate space separating it from the stove.
The galley kitchen This shape offers the most efficient use of space, making it the choice of many professional chefs, in this case you! The two rows allow room for lots of preparation space, and moving between activity areas can be as easy as turning around. However, I would not suggest this layout if you are placing the kitchen in a corridor, as the opening at both ends can cause circulation congestion. Make sure there is adequate room for opposite drawers to be open simultaneously (at least 120cm). Another key consideration is to keep the cleaning and cooking areas on the same side in order to minimize the risk of accidents while moving hot pans between the sink and stove.
The L-shape kitchen This is a very common kitchen layout – ideal for a family kitchen, or for entertaining guests, Since it can easily accommodate table and chairs in the same room. Using two adjacent walls, the kitchen also benefits from the absence of traffic moving across the space. The sink, stove and fridge should be separated by a preparation area.
The U-shape kitchen The use of three full walls in a room sets the perfect working kitchen. The fridge, stove and sink can be spaced out for maximum efficiency and convenience depending on the size of your kitchen, keeping attention to the maximum distance range. This is great news for those who take their cooking seriously, as it offers the best workflows with the shortest distances around the kitchen. This shape also allows for large amounts of countertop and storage space, and if the space allows for an island one can be accommodated in the middle too.
The island kitchen A very popular kitchen type, the island layout is perfect if you plan to entertain but requires more floor space. An independent island unit can face a dining or living area, allowing the cook to socialize while cooking. A sink here provides the optimal arrangement in terms of the kitchen’s working triangle. Otherwise, a cooktop with a canopy over the island can form a stunning focal point to the kitchen. Now that you have understood how to make your kitchen functional, treat the finishes just like you treat any other space. Be creative with colors, lighting and materials! Who said a kitchen has to be covered with blunt white ceramic and steel counter tops? It can be as pretty as you want it to be!

Story telling
For those who doubt, think again. For everything has a story. Whether it is the car you drove to work, hot beverage with this morning or the person sitting next you right now. Everything and everyone has a story.
W
hat type of story it is depends on how it is being told. The telling of a story is an art that paints an image in the mind of the reader or listener. Slowly the image then becomes strong enough to grow wings and take the listener to a far away land. Be it fiction, non-fiction or science fiction, the story begins to wrap its literary arms around you and capture you into its own world that only you have conceived. Stories have been shared in every culture since the beginning of time and have served many purposes varying from entertainment to spirituality. It is believed that the earliest form of storytelling had been expressed orally. Australian aboriginals were thought to have painted symbols on walls as a form of storytelling. It was only later with the invention of writing tools that stories were recorded and passed down to generations and other cultures as well. Of course all stories have a plot, characters and a narrative. Although the narrative point of view
is what makes the story what it is, in my opinion a key ingredient is imagination. All stories should have imaginative narration exaggeration to some extent in order to command the attention of the readers or listeners. Let us take the RMS Titanic as an example. It seems only appropriate since this year marks 100 years since the ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. As most of us know, the ship sank after colliding with an iceberg on its way to New York from the UK. Two hours and forty minutes after the collision, at approximately 2:30am on April 15, 1912 the ship sank claiming 1,514 lives. Although this disaster took place 100 years ago, there is no denying the prominent role it has played in popular culture and our world today. Since the sinking, Titanic inspired all kinds of art including poetry,
music and film. Most notably the movie Titanic by James Cameron (1997) that instantly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. There is no doubt that the Titanic has its place in history. In my opinion, it is not its place in history that makes us fantasize about it. But it is about who the passengers were, what they were like and how they reacted when they realized the ship they were on was about to be swallowed by the world’s second-largest oceanic division. It is the stories people have told and shared that make the legend of the Titanic what it is today. For example, a well-known story is the story of the band that was playing in the ship led by Wallace Hartley. It has been told that the band kept playing while the ship was sinking. There are, of course, many conflicting reports on what was being played and whether or not the band was playing at all.
Another story is that of a passenger William Thomas Stead who was a journalist and editor. Stead was on his way to the US to take part in a peace congress and, according to legend, during in the final moments as the ship was drowning, Stead assisted passengers into the lifeboats and reverted to a private room. In fact, he was last seen sitting in one of the first-class lounges reading. It is said that Stead believed he would die drowning. In fact, two of Stead’s writings caught attention during the aftermath. Eerily, one of the stories Stead had written tells a story of passengers drowning due to a shortage of lifeboats after a ship sinking. The other tells a story of a ship sinking after colliding with an iceberg. William Stead’s body was never recovered. Now remember that some of the info I have just shared is fact and some are legend or myths. In other words, highly unlikely to have actually happened. Without a narrative, character and imagination the story of the Titanic would simply be a dull headline to those who are not linked to it in any way.
‘The RMS Titanic, one of the largest ships to ever have been built sank after colliding with an iceberg.’ However, when wanting to tell the story of the Titanic guaranteeing it will have a long-lasting affect on the reader, listener or viewer, your words become the paintbrush on a hungry canvas ready to take in every detail to the fullest. Men, women and children of all classes are rushing every which way trying to figure out which exit would lead to safety. Screaming and shouting. People shove one another out of the way trying to find their families and loved ones. Men in their waste-coats and top hats rush up and down the grand staircase of the ship along with their wives. Waiters and cooks neglecting the A La carte restaurant running for their lives trying to gain balance as the ship begins to rock to and fro. The ship’s band courageously begins to play in effort to calm themselves and the distressed passengers as a journalist who has “predicted” this fate quickly helps women and children into the lifeboats and walks away to meet his fate in privacy. Soon after, the Titanic sinks… If your imagination followed me through this brief journey inside the sinking of the Titanic, then you will understand my passion when it comes to story-telling. I will not call myself a writer. I will leave it up to you to be the judge of that and whether or not I am worthy of the title. But I have been writing for as long as I could remember. From my “diary” when I was seven-years-old to a book that I am looking to publish soon. The important thing is to take a story as what it is truly meant to be. A Story. Not more, not less. But what you can take out of a story is the way it inspires you and the way it influences your life. Whether it pushes you to do good, help others, better your life, or in the case of the band players on the Titanic, go down with a fight. For me, I have chosen my story. The plot is where I have chosen to be, the characters have been chosen by me and this is my narrative. How it ends is beyond my control but I will make sure that those who remember me after I am gone will remember that I was a person who fought for who I and what I was and did not go with the flow or give into peer or social pressure. How about your story? Yes, you too have a story. Be it happy, sad, humorous or shameful. You have a story and before you reflect on what kind of story it is, remember that you have full control over which direction your story goes. Are you happy where you are? If you were to write your story is this where would choose to live? Are these the people who would be in it? Is this the career you would choose for yourself? If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions then take charge and begin doing what is rightfully yours. Writing your story. For when you are gone people will tell it. Similar to William Stead, you do not have control on how it is going to end. But what you do have control over is how you will be remembered in the end. For those who doubt, think again. For everything has a story.
Abdul Rahman Al-Gharabally July 2012 44
Abdul Rahman Munir Algharabally is a 24 year old self-made director. From an early age he decided to hone his talent since an early age and he worked to refine and develop this talent to present a unique gift. We sat down with him and discussed his thrilling documentary about Madagascar and the challenges he faced both on location and as a filmmaker in general. How did your start?
There was no actual start. This is something that grew with me as I grew up. I have always loved directing and colors. Since I was a kid, I had always dreamt of studying and becoming a director. After completing my high school I tried to make my dream come true but it just didn’t happen. I was not successful in attending any film schools. I went to Dubai to study film and attend a short Diploma course. After I completed my studies I started my career. I went to Syria for shooting a TV series about Khaled Ibn Alwaleed. I did this at my own expense and I was happy to bear the cost. I wanted to be on the set of a professional team. After my return from Syria I started directing TV commercials although my main passion is films especially documentaries. Kuwait does not have a cinema or production market yet.
internationally and first in the Arab world. I feel proud that I took the challenge and reached where I am now.
What is your dream?
I want to leave an impact by producing a movie that will be remembered for years to come. My second dream is to establish a school for cinema industry in Kuwait, to have a generation that is capable of shifting the Cinema industry in GCC to become active and creative.
Anything you’d like to add?
I’d like to thank theCity Magazine for their efforts and interest in my work, namely Khaled Al-Qahtani and Lana Al-Reshaid.
What are you working on currently?
The current movie that I am working on is a documentary filmed in Madagascar. We met a lot of obstacles while filming there. Madagascar is a poor country with very little services. We managed to accomplish and produce a great part of the film. Our biggest challenge was finding food and accommodation. Finding a suitable shelter was very challenging. Going around was also very difficult since the majority of roads are not paved. A hundred kilometer road would take a six hour drive. In spite of all that, working on the location was delightful and the simple life there has a different charm. Researcher Ayman Khedher was of great help during the period of filming.
What are your favorite genres?
My favorite genre is documentaries and TV commercials. Documentaries are exciting to work on because there is a sense of adventure associated with it. To me each documentary is a new and a thrilling experience even before starting shooting. TV commercials are fun to work on because of the concept of presenting an idea or in just few seconds. You want to leave the right impression on the viewer, and I find working on creating that effect to be extremely thrilling.
What are the hardest moments you have encountered in your career? Being on set for the TV series in Syria, and shooting the documentary in Madagascar both had their share of challenges and difficulties encountered. However, to me the hardest part was convincing my parents with my wish to choose this career. At the time there was no market for cinema production in Kuwait.
What projects made you the happiest while working on them?
My best times are the times I spent while working on the unfinished documentary Madagascar. In spite of the dangers and risks involved, I have felt great joy because of this new experience. I want to present a unique production that has nothing similar to it in Kuwaiti or Arab productions.
Who supported your passion in filmmaking?
My family in general supported me although some of them were against it due to the reputation of this field. My parents , my elder brother and my uncle Sameer Algharabally provided tremendous support when I entered this field. My cousins and my friend Shamlan Albahar also provided support and encouragement.
How did you deal with the negativity and discouragement?
I just kept going. Those who were critical and sarcastic turned into my biggest supporters with time. At the beginning, I met refusal from those around me because of my intention to become a movie director. When I used to say that I love documentaries, people responded with even more discouraging remarks, saying that there aren’t even specialized TV channels in the country. When I used to tell people I want to be known internationally, many thought I was being ridiculous. “Who are you to have such aspiration?” Today I see what I have accomplished, my movie Madgascar is the second www.thecitymagazine.net 45

What’s happening all around the World Cities in july ?
World’s best festivals: Kirkpinar Oil Camel Cup Wrestling Location: Blatherskite Park, Alice Springs, Location: Kirkpinar, Edirne, Turkey
Northern Territory, Australia
Dates: late June–early July
Date: 14 July
Level of participation: 1 – watch the slippery Level of participation: 2 – watch the camels
Goliaths grapple

During the early, expansionist days of the Ottoman empire, the military commander Süleyman Pasa would let his soldiers unwind between warfare by wrestling. On one memorable occasion, 40 men scuffled at once. The two fiercest fighters grappled past midnight and until both died of exhaustion. When the remaining army had conquered Edirne, the victors referred to the 40 soldiers in the name of Kirkpinar, where the wrestling competition still takes place.
Normally a dusty outback outpost with the feel of a pioneer town, ‘the Alice’ explodes with bellydancing, bands, rickshaw rallies and, most importantly, camel races in July.
It’s unclear whether olive oil was used in the Ottoman era, but it certainly is today. Over 100 drums of oil are used during the three-day tournament, starting with an opening ceremony where the contestants, some just children, get greased up. The idea is to prevent your foe from getting a good grip. Circulating the stadium between 20 grunting, glistening showdowns, the attendants with extra oil prove popular. This is no-holdsbarred wrestling, where a contestant might grab his opponent’s testicles. With a 14-carat gold belt awarded to the bas pehlivan (head wrestler), there’s everything to play for. However, in remembrance of the brotherhood shared by the original 40 wrestlers, participants are marked on the manners they show their oily opposite number. If a winner has not emerged after 30 minutes, a ‘sudden death’ round ensues.
Local attractions: Kirkpinar Museum contains wrestling relics such as tote bags, clay oil jugs and gold belts.

Camel racing may sound a trifle surreal to anyone not acquainted with the Northern Territory, Australia’s least-populated area. The sport’s appeal lies in the beasts’ unpredictability and irascibility. They snarl, gurn, bite, and can spit more than 3m. At the start of a race, they might stay right where they are or even reverse, while when they get going at full tilt, jockeys have to do their utmost to stay astride. Held at Blatherskite Park, part of the Central Australian Show Society grounds, the desert extravaganza offers all sorts of trophies in addition to the main Imparja gong. The Afghanistan Cup is presented by the country’s ambassador to Australia, commemorating the Afghans who brought camels to the outback and constructed telegraph lines and railways. In the Honeymoon Handicap, ‘grooms’ race half-way around the arena before lowering the camels, and handing the reins to their ‘brides’. If a couple is feeling particularly cocky, they might also fancy their luck in the Miss & Mr Camel Cup Challenge. The colour and pace intensify during the Popular Arts Festival, when performers from across the North African nation use the city as an al fresco venue. Sauntering across Djemaa el-Fna in search of the dreamy orange juice stands, you come across even more fire-swallowers, fortune-tellers and folk singers than usual. Look out for Berber musicians and dancers frommthe High Atlas, Andalucían-style songsters from the Spanish-influenced north, and the hypnotic Gnaouas drummers from the south. The main gathering point for performers from acting troupes to acrobats is Palais el-Badi. Built by Ahmed al-Mansour between 1578 and 1602, the now-ruined palace was reputed to be one of the most beautiful in the world and well deserved its name, the Incomparable. Every evening, a fantasia (choreographed military display on Arabian horses) takes place in a field near the palace.

Japanese culture often confuses the outsider and Kyoto’s multifaceted float parade-come-kimono display is no exception. The procession of yamaboko floats on 17 July remembers the occasion in AD 869 when 66 halberd-carrying dignitaries, each representing a Japanese province, trooped through Kyoto to beseech Gozu Tenno, the god of plague, to give the city a break. It takes up to 40 people to move the teetering temples on wheels. For three mornings from 10 July, you can watch them being built out of huge, carved blocks, some weighing more than 10 tonnes.
and enjoy the fireworks
Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls is an unbridled outpouring of the passion that pumps rudely through the Spanish character. As part of the festivities dedicated to the town’s patron saint, San Fermin, hundreds of ‘runners’ sprint along 800m of track in front of a six-pack of raging bulls. Every year, without fail, there are injuries and even the odd fatality in the early-morning runs. The official website described 2007’s final run as ‘fast and clean’ because ‘only’ three participants required medical treatment, one for a goring. The two scariest sections of the run are Estafeta, the stone alley with only doorways to take refuge in, and the narrow entrance to Plaza del Toros. The Running of the Bulls remains a controversial festival and the World Society for the Protection of Animals has plenty of information on campaigns to end bullfighting and links to Spanish organisations like the Asociación Defensa Derechos Animal.

The construction over, along with the purification of the portable shrines in the river, Kyoto gets down to the business of celebration. Devotional performances take place, including one by dancers in heron costumes. Gaggles of whitefaced teenage girls click through the streets in wooden clogs and yukata (summer kimonos). Residences in the merchant quarter play ‘open house’, offering the chance to see Japanese heirlooms in their original setting.
Between 1575 and 1577, a terrible plague swept through Venice, claiming some 50,000 lives – one-third of the city. When the epidemic abated, the Senate, thanking the Redeemer (Jesus) for answering its prayers, built Il Redentore church and started an annual festival. Today, the event is a great excuse for fireworks. Hoping for a good view of the show, the city loads into gondolas during the day. This is the average Venetian’s favourite festival, and at sunset St Mark’s Basin fills with thousands of illuminated boats decorated with flowers and balloons. At 11.30pm those celebrants who have run out of vino and focaccia are consoled by the fireworks. Reflected in the water between the bobbing gondolas, the multicoloured explosions silhouette the city’s famous spires, domes and bell towers.
A star of the parade itself is chigo, a local boy who rides the main yamaboko wearing Shinto robes and a golden phoenix crown. The poor lad has to undergo weeks of purification. Gion Matsuri lasts throughout July but is most colourful in the middle of the month.
On Sunday, hungover Venetians have until the afternoon to recover before the gondola regatta, one of about 10 major regattas that take place annually. Remembering the festival’s religious roots, mass is held in the presence of the lofty Patriarch of Venice in Il Redentore, on the island of Giudecca. Reluctant churchgoers are encouraged by the temporary bridge across Giudecca Canal, formed of a 330m-long gondola chain.

Tour around the Countries and Cultures
I have believed- and always will- that “a picture is worth a thousand words and tends to give you a clue about the artist's intention. However, there is no harm in attaching a short commentary regarding the picture's background. So, let's start a tour around the countries and cultures where I have been living in until now.
Photography- for me- is a beautiful experience that no one knows unless s/he lives it. Manhatten, NY.
Carrying my Camera and its lens while wandering around the beauty of the surrounding nature is unexplainable; however, I can portray it in the following sentence: It is a similar feeling of that of a mother lovingly holding her baby in her arms and walking with him/her in a care-free surrounding.
It is indeed a hard and unjustified life that your simplest rights are forcefully taken away from you, specially after being used to live in a very luxurious life in palaces, served by butlers and maids. This is exactly what happened to this old Mexican lady in the picture July 2012 52
above, when her ancestors' empire was taken away by the Spaniards. Valle de bravo, Mexico.
A restaurant on top of a mountain in a valley area. It includes indoor as well as outdoors seating area.
This family too; from an empire's inhabitants to cottage's livers.
one of the most beautiful architectural corners in four seasons hotel in Mexico. Where Kuwait Embassy is located.
Different cultures are rarely to be thoroughly learnt from books or guides, only. Traveling around the countries as well as merging with the native people of that culture. Mexico, for example, has been portrayed in hollywood's movies as an extremely dangerous, poor and sunny country that is filled with cactus and; moreover, people there move with mottled hats and flashy clothes. This is exactly the opposite of what I saw in Mexico. it is a very civilized country with very sophisticated people in mind, soul and outfit. the pictures below could give you a glimpse of the modern Mexico.
A person will never see the reality of the world unless s/he steps out from their small bubble, or as it is saidat least in my culture- "to replace his limited eyeglasses with a wider one". Everyone of us has his limited vision of any issue or topic he deals with no matter how open-minded or knowledgable he pretends to be. The picture above explains my point; we have always associated the big apple- Manhattan- with Times Square, Broadway theaters/shows, sky scrapers, yellow cabs, popular restaurants such as Shake Shack or famous bakeries as Magnolia. Hence, it has not been seen as in the very unique view from the top of the city in a helicopter, viewing it as a very tiny island surrounded by water. Life, as well, has always been seen as complicated and tiring, however, from outside the bubble, it is an easy formula with a small number. Simplicity, is all what it takes.

Continuing With, With the New Science of Weight Control© Let’s Make A Diet! Dr. Mike, Dr. Bonnie and Dr. Jasem of the Wellness, Fitness and Obesity Consultants Hawally, 99057311 6504-4125 Visit: www.obesityconsultants.us A science-based monthly column based upon the U. S. National Institute of Health ‘Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity’ Putting Your New Knowledge to Use With Action Tools You Can Use Review: Storage foods are foods that when eaten store easily as fat. Typical storage foods are sugar, honey, breads, almost all cereals, pastas, cookies, cakes, candy, corn syrup, fructose, all oils, butter, and fats.
Non-storage are foods that when eaten do not store easily as fat. Typical non-storage foods are most fruits, all vegetables, very lean meats and all no-fat dairy or skimmed dairy.
Action Idea #1 Reading nutritional labels and applying your new science-based knowledge. Ask yourself the right questions. • What is the first ingredient listed on the label? • How many grams of carbohydrate? • Is the carbohydrate processed or unprocessed? This last question is almost a trick. Why? Because if you are reading a label it is very likely that most of the carbohydrate is processed, because unprocessed foods do not require a label! Look in the fresh produce section of the grocery store. Do fresh vegetables and fruits have labels? No, you will not find labels here! July 2012 54
Let me say that again. If it has a label, it is processed, because most unprocessed foods do not require a label! Let’s look at the label on breads. On the label of a loaf of bread advertised as whole multi grain, the label will list the primary ingredient (the first ingredient on the list) as whole-wheat flour. We know that all flour is made by grinding and milling various grains. Grinding and milling processes the grain. Therefore, all flour is processed and is consequently a storage category carbohydrate. Let’s see how the nutrition label on our whole grain bread further breaks down the ingredients: • 100 total calories per slice. • Total fat = 2.5 grams (2.5 grams x 9 calories per gram) = 22.5 fat calories. • Total carbohydrate = 19 grams (19 grams x 4 calories per gram) = 76 calories from processed carbohydrate. (We know this is processed because it is milled and ground grain) • Sugar calories = 0. • Manitol = 2 grams. Manitol is an alcohol that is sweet tasting, but not absorbed by the intestine. Manitol can cause diarrhea in some susceptible individuals.
• Protein = 6 grams (6 grams times 4 calories per gram) = 24 protein calories.
that each slice actually has 98.5 storage calories, and 20 non-storage calories.
Now, in summary we have: • 22.5 calories from fat.
Was the bread labeling helpful or misleading? It was misleading unless you know how to read and interpret the information, because most of the calories in the bread come from processed carbohydrate, which is a storage food. Science tells us that storage foods are equivalent to sugar.
• 76 calories from carbohydrate.
processed
• 24 calories from protein. Note that this will add up to more than the stated 100 calories. This is not unusual. Often the numbers simply do not exactly add up. From this, we can see that even though this bread is advertised as ‘sugar free’ and ‘multi grained’, each slice still contains: • 76 calories from processed carbohydrates, which we call storage foods. Processed carbohydrate stores as fat very quickly and stimulates hunger hormones causing more eating behavior. Why do you think all restaurants give away bread? So that you will increase your appetite and order more food that does cost! • 24 calories from protein, which we call non-storage food because it does not store as fat. Protein decreases hunger. • 22.5 calories from fat, which are a storage food. Fat also retards hunger but stores readily as fat. Now the bread was labeled as 100 calories per slice. However, we see
So, all in all, is this a good food or a bad food? The answer depends upon our problems and our goals. In other words: • How much of this food will we eat, and how often will we eat it. • Do we have a weight problem? • Are we dieting for weight loss? If so, this food would not be a good food. • Are we dieting for weight maintenance? Then this food would be acceptable in small amounts so long as we understand that even small amounts increase our appetite and promote fat building.
Action Idea #2 |Storage foods are processed carbohydrates (sugars by another name) and fat, which push the wrong hormone buttons. Eat as little storage food as you can.
Imagine you are at a food buffet. How could you push the right hormone buttons as you select your food? • Salad with low or no calorie dressing. • Apple or other fresh fruit for dessert. • Lean meat, especially broiled or baked, and most especially, deep water fish. • Baked potato with no topping except salt and pepper! • Steamed vegetables cream or oil.
without
• No bread. • Water or tea + artificial sweetener and lemon. Here we have pushed six of the right hormone buttons. Can you identify all six?
Action Idea #3 Non-storage foods are very lean proteins(fish, chicken, turkey) and un-processed carbohydrates (fresh fruits and raw or steamed vegetables), which push the right hormone buttons. Eat as much non-storage food as you want, within reason of course.
Action Idea #4 Take two Omega 3 oil capsules daily or two to three servings of deepwater fish weekly to protect your arteries and prevent heart disease. Understanding Carbohydrates and Fats/oils Good Carbs, Bad Carbs, Does It Really Matter?
Definition #8 True whole grains are grains in their natural unprocessed state (the way they are found in the farmer’s field). True whole grains are fully unprocessed carbohydrate (the good guys). Grains have a naturally tough outer package called bran that is made of a hard layer of protein, vitamins and insoluble fiber. This hard outer coat is removed by milling and usually thrown away. The inner portion of the grain is made up of starch (sugars bound together in branched chains). After milling the starch (sugar) is further ground into fine particles that make is absorb fast and turn to fat quickly. The outer coating o f grains (called bran), when not
disrupted by milling, slows digestion and also slows absorption of the inner starch. This slower digestion and absorption prevents the exaggerated insulin response that causes abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and associated diseases. Unfortunately, we do not eat grains in their natural state. We only eat them after they have been processed by both milling and grinding, thereby converting them into processed carbohydrate (bad guys).
carbohydrate, is a dietary roller coaster leading to: • Abdominal obesity
Processing not only disrupts and removes the tough outer package containing most of the nutritional value, but it also breaks the starch into very small fragments allowing more rapid digestion and absorption of the sugar molecules that make up the starch. Regrettably, all of the so-called whole grain foods (breads, chips, pastas and cereals) are made from processed grains that have been milled and finely ground. These products, mislabeled as whole grains, only tell us that the product includes some or all of the now finely ground up outer bran shell and or germ. In other words, they mill away the bran and germ, then grind the inner starch into very fine powder and then add back a bit of bran and germ so that they can call the product ‘whole grain’!
Definition #9
Science Based Fact Most all products labeled as ‘whole grain’ are in fact very processed carbohydrate. Remember, by law unprocessed foods do not require a label. Retaining or adding back the milled outer fibrous bran coating and germ does add nutritional value in the form of B vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein, but does nothing to prevent rapid absorption, excessive insulin response, abdominal obesity and disease! The excessive insulin response of milled and ground processed grains causes the ingested starch to be rapidly converted into fats, called triglycerides, which are preferentially stored in the inter-abdominal cavity. Repeated ingestion of this phony ‘whole grain’, which in fact is really processed
• Resultant hypertension • Strokes • Heart disease • Adult onset diabetes • Generalized artery disease • Many cancers • Early death! White flour is processed grain that has been bleached and separated from its bran and germ. The bleaching and separation process results in a processed carbohydrate without vitamins or minerals, a truly empty calorie food. Did you know that rats and mice are too smart to eat white flour? This is why it was invented, so it could be shipped upon rat infested ships without fear that the rodents would eat the precious flour on the long voyage!
Science Based Fact For the purposes of weight control, ingestion of a bagel, because it is made from processed grain, is equivalent to eating a donut, even a so-called whole grain bagel! Judith, a 38 year old personal exercise trainer, asked, “Dr. Green, I just can’t figure out why I am gaining weight. All I have for breakfast is a bowl of whole grain cereal with milk, for lunch a whole grain bagel with cream cheese, and for dinner whole grain pasta with low fat sauce! I’ve read that whole grains are good for you. They are, aren’t they?”. Remember, grains are unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) for weight control purposes only if they are in their natural state and have not been processed by milling and grinding. Grains made into flour and thence into bread, pasta, cereal etc. are really highly processed carbohydrate, which is, ounce for ounce, exactly equivalent to sugar, candy or a jelly donut.
Science Based Fact Carbohydrates, both processed and unprocessed, contain 4 calories per gram. Fats contain 9 calories per gram. Proteins contain 4 calories per gram. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. We see that an ounce of carbohydrate or protein would equal about 124 calories, whereas an ounce of fat would equal a whopping 279 calories. One tablespoon of fat or oil equals two and a half tablespoons of pure sugar! www.thecitymagazine.net 55

How to live with your diabetes
Diabetes is existent in almost every family in this day and age. Before we delve deep into the issue of diabetes, let’s talk about how we can coexist with the disease. First, let’s discuss the basics of diabetes.
T
here are two types of diabetes. Type I, which results from the autoimmune destruction of insulinproducing beta cells of the pancreas, and type II diabetes, in which the body resists the natural amount of insulin, needing a bigger amount of insulin to be ingested by the body. Reasons for this include obesity, high blood pressure and the large consumption of alcohol. Diabetes can be influenced by two things that are part of our every day life: diet and exercise. What you eat can either give you diabetes or help you prevent it for life. Exercise, too, can help you control your diabetes better. Studies show that regularly exercising for 30 minutes a day, even if only brisk walking can help patients control their diabetes better. It is also recommended to spend less time in front of the TV, since sitting in front of the TV associated with binging on unhealthy snacks and can have a negative overall impact on your health. Therefore, it is best to control how much time you spend in front of the TV.

A cup of coffee a day keeps the doctor away
For years coffee has endured a bad rap, but experts now say the caffeine content can actually do you some good.
E
very morning Lesli Boldt starts her day with a serious cup of coffee -- a two-shot espresso with hot water. “I have one coffee a day and I want it to be a good one,” says Lesli, 35, a manager of marketing and communications for the Vancouver Public Library.
Not only does Lesli's coffee taste good, but new research suggests that it may also be good for her. Recent studies have found that drinking coffee can actually be a healthy habit, enhancing athletic performance, increasing mental alertness and protecting against serious diseases such asAlzheimer's, Parkinson's and even liver and colon cancers. “Coffee consumption fits into a very healthy diet and, if anything, may have a beneficial effect,” Dr. Eileen Madden, a toxicologist and food-safety expert, told a symposium on coffee and health last fall at the New York Academy of Sciences. That's surprising news for most Canadians who love coffee but treat it as something of a guilty pleasure. Canadians have mixed feelings about the beverage they love to drink, says Massimo Marcone, a food scientist and adjunct professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario who has studied coffee production and consumption all over the world. “People have a preconceived idea about coffee -- they think it's bad for you,” he says. And no wonder. Almost every day media reports tell us that consuming coffee may be associated with serious health problems, such as osteoporosis, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, infertility, fibrocystic breast disease (FBD), breast cancer and even miscarriage. But, say the experts, many of those findings were based on poorly designed research and were not supported by further studies.
The benefits of coffee
If you love coffee, here's some of the latest good news. • A study of 90,000 Japanese by the National Cancer Center in Tokyo found that people who drank one to four cups of coffee daily had half the liver cancer risk of those who never drank coffee. Researchers aren't sure why, but they speculate that antioxidants may play a role. • A study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health that followed more than 125,000 men and women for more than a decade found that regular coffee drinkers had a significantly lower risk of developing type 2 (or late-onset) diabetes. Studies in Sweden and Finland also concluded that coffee consumption offers protection from type 2 diabetes. Again, researchers aren't sure why. • A half-dozen recent international studies showed a positive relationship between drinking caffeinated beverages -- including coffee -- and lower rates of Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. • Other research links coffee consumption with reduced risk of cirrhosis of the liver, colon cancer and asthma. • A cup or two of coffee can improve endurance in activities such as running, cycling and swimming, according to other research. Coffee has a strong ergogenic effect, meaning it helps people work harder and longer, explains Lawrence Spriet, an exercise physiologist at the University of Guelph who has researched the effects of caffeine on athletic performance for more than a decade. "Even small amounts of caffeine can be quite powerful,” he says. It's still too early for blanket endorsements, but this kind of evidence has many scientists cautiously optimistic about the health-enhancing powers of coffee. "There is some solid scientific data that show there are some health benefits to moderate coffee consumption," says Marcone. That's good news, especially for the 81 per cent of Canadians who drink coffee occasionally and the more than 63 per cent (18 years of age and over) who drink it every day. The average Canadian consumes about 2.6 cups of coffee a day.
Caffeine is the key
Although there are about 2,000 substances in a cup of coffee, its main active ingredient is caffeine, a naturally occurring alkaloid. Tea leaves, cola nuts and cocoa beans also contain caffeine, but coffee beans have far more. An eightounce cup of brewed coffee has about 135 milligrams of caffeine compared with 36 to 46 milligrams for the same amount of cola and 43 milligrams for the same amount of average-blend tea (instant coffee contains 76 to 106 milligrams of caffeine). Caffeine acts as a stimulant, promoting the release of adrenaline in the body and suppressing a natural relaxant in the brain called adenosine. The result? Less fatigue, elevated mood, increased alertness and more energy. Not surprisingly, people who need to drive long distances, focus on a project, work a night shift or fight off jet lag drink caffeinated drinks to stay alert. The stimulating effects of caffeine may also result in enhanced athletic performance. The benefits are a blessing to coffee lovers, but there's a price to pay. Because caffeine is a mild stimulant to the central nervous and cardiovascular July 2012 58
systems, it can temporarily raise your blood pressure and, in larger doses, cause sleeplessness, anxiety and nervousness. “Caffeine jazzes up your body and creates a stress reaction,” explains Dr. David Posen, a stress-management consultant in Oakville, Ont. Caffeine is habit-forming, too, and although not technically addictive, it can cause some mild withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue or drowsiness if you stop cold turkey.
Moderation is best
So what's the bottom line? Overall, coffee consumed in moderation is safe. After reviewing numerous studies on the effects of caffeine on human health, researchers at Health Canada recently concluded that for the average adult, a moderate intake of caffeine (400 to 450 milligrams per day, or the equivalent of three to four 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee) “is not associated with any adverse effects.” Marcone agrees, saying, “As long as you stay within the guidelines, you're safe, and I'm confident of that based on the best science.” Rosie Schwartz, an author and dietitian in Toronto, also concurs with this assessment. “Moderation is the best approach,” she says. You're the best judge of your coffee capacity, but remember that your response to caffeine may change over time. “The key,” says Schwartz, “is to figure out how it's affecting you. Listen to what your body is telling you.” If you're feeling stressed, jittery or are having trouble sleeping, Posen recommends that you gradually reduce your coffee intake as an experiment. And he suggests that you don't drink coffee after lunchtime. Similarly, if you're planning to get pregnant or are already pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consider moderating your intake of caffeine. Health Canada recommends a maximum of 300 milligrams per day (about two to three 8-ounce cups) of brewed coffee. Although there are no definitive studies showing adverse effects, Schwartz advises pregnant women to drink even less than the two to three cups recommended by Health Canada. “It's best to err on the side of caution,” she says. If you love coffee and want to drink several cups a day, Schwartz has some great advice: use good quality coffee, but try a blend of half-caffeinated and half-decaffeinated. And if too much coffee irritates your stomach, giving you indigestion or heartburn, try a low-acid coffee, says Schwartz. “Coffee, in moderation, is one of life's great pleasures,” says Marcone. “You should not feel guilty when you're drinking it. When you have a cup of coffee, enjoy it.” The caffeine content of coffee varies depending on how the beans are roasted, the amount of coffee used per cup and how it is brewed. For soft drinks, the caffeine content is consistent.
Espresso coffee (1.5 to 2 oz) 45 to 100 mg of caffeine Red Bull energy drink (8.2 oz) 80 mg of caffeine Brewed coffee (8 oz) 80 to 135 mg of caffeine Cola beverages (12 oz) 43 to 55 mg of caffeine Warning: Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines contain significant amounts of caffeine. Be sure to check the label or talk with your pharmacist or other primary care provider before taking them. www.thecitymagazine.net 59
Going Green at Work A greener workplace can mean a lighter ecological footprint, a healthier and more productive place to work, and good news for the bottom line. Whether you’re the boss or the employee, whether your office is green already or still waiting to see the light, some practical steps can lay the groundwork for a healthy, low-impact workspace. From how you get to work -- we recommend telecommuting -- to helping your company walk the walk through corporate financial investment in green, to getting a new green job that matches your career with your ideals, to starting your own green business, we break down your green workplace. Read on for all the details.
Steps
Don’t Be a Paper Pusher When buying printer paper, look for recycled
More Work, Less Energy For many people, a computer is the central
tool at work. Optimizing the energy settings for computers and other devices can be more than a modest energy saver. Set computers to energysaving settings and make sure to shut them down when you leave for the day (“standby” settings will continue to draw power even when not in use). By plugging hardware into a power strip with an on/off switch (or a smart power strip), the whole desktop setup can be turned off at once (make sure to power down inkjet printers before killing the power--they need to seal their cartridges). Printers, scanners, and other peripherals that are only used occasionally can be unplugged until they’re needed. And of course, turn off lights in spaces that are unoccupied.
Digitize It does seem a bit strange that in the “digital age” we still con-
sume enormous amounts of mashed up, bleached tree pulp, most of which gets used once or twice and then tossed or recycled (“downcycled,” as McDonough and Braungart would call it). The greenest paper is no paper at all, so keep things digital and dematerialized whenever possible. The more you do online, the less you need paper. Keep files on computers instead of in file cabinets (this also makes it easier to make offsite backup copies or take them with you when you move to a new office). Review documents onscreen rather than printing them out. Send emails instead of paper letters. New software like Greenprint helps eliminate blank pages from documents before printing and can also convert to PDF for paperless document sharing. July 2012 60
paper with a high percentage of post-consumer content and the minimum of chlorine bleaching. Even recycled paper gobbles up a great deal of energy, water, and chemical resources in its processing (toxic pulp slurry is the paper recycling industry’s dirty secret). When using the real stuff, print on both sides of the page when appropriate and use misprints as notepaper. Try to choose printers and photocopiers that do double-sided printing. If your office ships packages, reuse boxes and use shredded waste paper as packing material.
Greening the Commute American workers spend an average of 47 hours per year commuting through rush hour traffic. This adds up to 3.7 billion hours and 23 billion gallons of gas wasted in traffic each year. We can ease some of this strain by carpooling, taking public transit, biking, walking, or a creative combination thereof. If there’s no good way to phase out your car, consider getting a hybrid, electric vehicle, motorcycle, scooter, or using a car sharing service like Flexcar or Zipcar. See How to Green Your Car for more depth on the subject. Some employers are even giving a bonus to bike and carpool commuters and special perks to hybrid drivers. For those who think bike riding is for kids and tattooed couriers, consider a high-tech folding bike or an electrically assisted one (see below for more). Green Sleeves You might be amazed how sharp work clothes from thrift
stores can look. If you buy new, get clothes made with organic or recycled fibers. Avoid clothes that need to be dry cleaned, and if they so demand it, seek out your local “green” dry cleaner. See How to Go Green: Wardrobe
for more tactics on greening those work duds.
proven to improve worker productivity and satisfaction (as well as boost sales in retail settings). Workspace air quality is also crucial. Good ventilation and low-VOC paints and materials (such as furniture and carpet) will keep employees healthy (look for How to Green Your Furniture coming soon).
Work From Home Instant messaging, video conferencing, and other innovative workflow tools make effective telecommuting a reality. If you can telecommute, hold phone conferences, take online classes, or otherwise work from home, give it a try. It’ll save you the time you would have spent on the trip as well as sparing the air. As a bonus, you get to work in your pajamas. Telecommuting works for 44 million Americans (not to mention the Tree Hugger staff ). Also, consider the possibility of working four ten-hour days instead of five eight-hour days (a consolidated workweek), cutting the energy and time spent on commuting by 20% and giving you some lovely three-day weekends.
Lunch Time Bringing lunch to work in reusable containers is likely the greenest (and healthiest) way to eat at work. Getting delivery and takeout almost inevitably ends with a miniature mountain of packaging waste. But if you do order delivery, join coworkers in placing a large order (more efficient than many separate ones). Also, bring in a reusable plate, utensils, and napkins. If you do go out for lunch, try biking or walking instead of driving.
Use Green Materials Some pa-

per use can’t be avoided, so use recycled paper and envelopes that have been processed and colored using eco-friendly methods. Pens and pencils can also be made of recycled materials, and refillable pens and markers are preferable to disposable ones. Use biodegradable soaps and recycled paper or cloth towels in the bathroom and kitchen, and provide biodegradable cleaners for the custodial staff. Buy in bulk so that shipping and packaging waste are reduced, and reuse the shipping boxes. Recycling printer cartridges is often free, and recycled replacements are cheaper than new ones.
Redesign the Workspace Green-
ing the space in which you work has almost limitless possibilities. Start with good furniture, good lighting, and good air. Furniture can be manufactured from recycled materials as well as recyclable. Herman-Miller and Steelcase are two groundbreaking companies that have adopted the Cradle-to-Cradle protocol for many of their office chairs. Incandescent bulbs can be replaced with compact fluorescents and there is an ever-growing selection of highend LED desk lamps that use miniscule amounts of energy (see How to Green Your Lighting). Not only is natural daylight a free source of lighting for the office, it has been
these tips with your colleagues. Ask your boss to purchase carbon offsets for corporate travel by car and plane. Arrange an office carpool or group bike commute. Trade shifts and job duties so that you can work four long days instead of five short ones. Ask the office manager to get fair trade coffee for the break room and make sure everyone has a small recycling bin so that recycling is just as easy as throwing paper away. Ask everyone to bring in a mug or glass from home and keep some handy for visitors so that you reduce or eliminate use of paper cups.
Green Work:
By the Numbers
Once: the number of times that most of the more than 25 billion cartons manufactured in the U.S. are used. 55 percent: the amount of water saved by producing recycled paper as compared to virgin paper. Recycled paper also takes 60-70 percent less energy to produce than paper from virgin pulp. 120: the number of tons of steel saved if every UK office worker used one less staple a day. w8 billion: the number of gallons of gas saved if every commuter car in the U.S. carried just one more person.
Getting Techie Hidden Power Usage We turn off our computers at night, so why are our power bills still so high? Many appliances have “standby” settings that draw power--sometimes as much as 15 or 20 watts--even when they’re turned off. A 2002 report found that: “Lopomo [low power mode] energy use is responsible for about 10% of total electricity use in California homes.” To make sure that computers, monitors, printers, photocopy machines, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, and microwave ovens are all the way off, pull the plug rather than flipping the switch on the machine. Also make sure any climate control systems are turned off when they aren’t needed and set to energy-efficient modes when in use. You might be surprised by how much energy this saves.
Toxic Indoor Air It is not uncommon for interior air to be more contaminated with toxic chemicals than the air outdoors. Furniture (especially particle board), carpeting, and paint are common sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a family of chemicals that are frequently “offgassed.” VOCs have been linked to birth defects, endocrine disruption, and cancer. Especially if your office is well-insulated (which it should be for energy purposes) toxins can’t get out easily. Greenguard is a non-profit certifier of products that help maintain healthy interior air. Herman Miller, Haworth, Knoll, Keilhauer, and Izzydesign all offer Greenguard certified furniture options.
Furniture Wood Certification The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Rainforest Alliance both certify wood that has come from sustainably harvested forests or is reclaimed. When your office is looking for new desks, bookshelves, dividers, etc., try to find sustainable wood products that do not contain formaldehyde or other harmful VOCs. www.thecitymagazine.net 61

Nude makeup for those who can't leave house without makeup I have always loved the natural look, the so-called nude makeup. It makes you look natural, pretty, and fresh! In fact it looks so much prettier than full heavy makeup, especially if you are wearing it for everyday in the morning, and now that Ramadan is nearly here, it is preferable to stay away from caked makeup and stick with the ‘nude’ natural look. Lighter and with less colors!
H
ere are my top ten tips to get the nude makeup right and quick!
your lipstick last longer you can apply foundation on the lips as well to give it a base
1. First, make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturize your face beforehand. This will make your skin glow, and make you look naturally flawless
Now you will be able to make a beautiful natural look that will bring out your natural beauty. Remember that nude look is always amazing, and it is better to apply some good quality make up that perfectly match your skin tone, and make the most of this easy to do and very stylish look.
2. Apply the foundation and make sure it's not heavy or cakey, because the idea of the foundation shouldn’t be visible at all. Remember proper blending is necessary for natural looking coverage, that's why it is better to use a special brush or a wet sponge to blend it well. 3. It is very important to apply a concealer, because it will give you a fresh look. But make sure to find the right shade and blend it in so it looks flawless, not obvious. Apply several dots of concealer under your eyes, then use the pad of your finger to tap it in (always tap, never rub). You can also use it where you need, including on your lips, if you want to create a creamy look 4. Comb your brows gently with a brow brush and fill in the nude spots. You can do this with brown solid eyeshadow that matches your natural brow color 5. Use a special brush to apply your eyeshadow, and try to select brown colors, light pink or gray to give you the natural look. If you want the color to last longer you can use base shadow before the eyeshadow and apply it from crease to brow. 6. To add some definition to the eyes, use liquid or creamy eyeliner choosing a black or brown and apply a thin line on the top of the lash-line. 7. ALWAYS WEAR MASCARA! Two or three coats of mascara will do, brown or black, the one you like better. And here's a trick of makeup artists use to make lashes pop: apply one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of thickening mascara. 8. Apply a highlighter to the brow bone, also on the cheeks before the powder. It gives you that glowing look 9. Blusher! Knowing which colors will suit you is very important. If you have pale skin, go for peachy colors, and light pinks. If you are brunette you can use peachy colors or go for bronze, it will give you a natural look and adds a subtle highlight to the cheek bones, but be careful not to apply too much of bronzer. When you select your perfect blusher blend it well to make it look more natural. You can also use cream blush instead of powder, and just apply it to the apples of your cheeks (smile to make it easier to apply) then blend it in a circle motion 10. Finally, apply a nude gloss with a hint of shimmer, mate lipstick or simply a skin-colored gloss for fuller lips effect, and avoid bright colors lipstick like red and fuchsia. a clear lip-liner will help to set the color and to make July 2012 82

Style up your Ramadan wardrobe
amadan is a holy month of excitement for Muslims. It is a month where everyone's religious values stand out. In respect of the holy month, the fashion mood is more unique than the other months of the year. The sense of style is exposed through a variety of designs, colors, lengths, and accessories. One of the special events that the ladies look forward to is a gathering called "ghabga". For this event the ladies wear, traditional outfits such as daraa', jalabeya, or a kaftan. A Kaftan is a style designed by designers that combines the modern look together with the traditional look. Usually you either have one tailor-made or you purchase it off the rack. If you were going to have one tailor-made, you want to think about the design and the look you are aiming for. Would you like it plain? With a pattern? Layers? How many? Colorful? Bright, shaded, dark? What type of material? Texture? A picture of something you like that you wish to have tailor-made, loose cut, fitted, or loose cut but slimmer at the top, whichever flatters you more, straight cut, A-cut, or whatever. Always picture and draw out your design to what suits and compliments your body shape and skin tone. Nonetheless, when you surf the net or scan through magazines you sometimes like a design, go over the questions above, cut out the page if it's from a magazine or print out the image if it's from the net and have it tailor-made. If you eyed something you desire go for it. However, when purchasing an item off the rack, other things come into consideration not necessarily in this order, such as color, cut, length, size, price, and what can you wear it with accessories. You ask yourself questions: Is this a nice color? Is it too flashy? Is it too dark? Does it suit my skin tone? Is this length fine? Does it make me look short? Does it make me look slimmer? Is the size right on me? Do I need a smaller or bigger size? Does it need altering or adjustments in certain areas? How much does it cost? Is it worth the price? Have I seen something else in the same price range that looks better? All these questions are played in your mind while purchasing. My only advise to you is you are thinking of them for the right reasons, so STOP being an impulsive buyer and buy something that is worth it and that flatters YOU most of all. I know a lot of girls that rush into purchasing items just keep hanging in their closets with the tags on. Abayas! Well, nowadays you got a wide range of designs. In this case too, you got the option of buying or having it tailor made. The summer abayas are specially designed according to the weather, where the appropriate fabric is selected. The preference of women choosing an abaya is extremely important to the designer as the women must be comfortable and stylish at the same time. The abaya scarves are available in various colors with gorgeous embroidery, Swarovski, beads and stones. The additions are also done on the neck-line and hand cuffs. Depending on your figure and taste you may choose to wear the abaya fitted or loose. You can wear these casually or formally depending on your design and occasion. Ladies, appreciate life! Love the fact that almost everything is available for us. And we can always be fashionable and stylish regardless of time. If you're in the mood to dress up, go for it, look HOT. If not, wear a stunning abaya. You’ve got to love yourself to look the role. Bottom line is, being in style is having passion for fashion. Ramadan Mubarak my beloved readers! July 2012 90

n Constantinople’s Wake” was Elie Saab’s way to propose his vision of the Western aesthetic, inspired by the banks of the Bosporus or Ottoman motifs. In tones of soft pink, champagne, sky blue, jade and antique gold, the Lebanese designer showed his capacity to design very eye-catching dresses with lots of jewel stitches and crystal embroideries. He also showcased more sober pieces, in which the luxurious fabrics and volumes of the piece make it unnecessary to add anything else. We all loved it, and especially the lucky women who will get to wear these outfits very soon

HOROSCOPES July Planet Overview:
The July 3 Full Moon could spark a new idea that spells success. The July 10 Quarter Moon in aggressive Aries could bring attention to your brainchild, while the July 13 Uranus retrograde might slow your progress. Mercury's retrograde on July 14 complicates what should be a rapid climb to accomplishment. The July 18 New Moon revitalizes all your work and supports any plans made up to now. July 22 is the luckiest day of the month. You could literally leap over obstacles and be recognized for your perseverance. Keep your wits about you as the Quarter Moon in treacherous Scorpio plants a hint of betrayal at a high level on July 26
Lindsay Lohan BORN: JULY 2, 1986 - NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA
Although she started out as a promising young actress, personal problems have tainted Lindsay's reputation since her younger days. With her Moon in tenacious Taurus, she will probably persevere if she chooses to continue pursuing an acting career. Because she's a sensitive Cancer Sun, all of the rumors and gossip probably do get to her, but she also has two aspects in proud and confident Leo, so it's rare that she lets the paparazzi capture her pain.

LEO
)March 21 - April 19(
)May 21 - June 20(
)July 23 - August 22(
There may be some stress at home or with a family member this month with the Sun in Cancer. Emotional reactions will only complicate matters. You could resent authority, be impatient, and refuse to bend to anyone else's will. Mars moves to Libra on July 3, bringing conflict and bickering. There's the potential to resolve issues by being empathetic, diplomatic, and willing to communicate. Mercury in Leo will bring out your playful, flirtatious side. If you have a partner, be careful of your behavior around him or her. You'll feel the need to express yourself.
Life is good and you feel positive this month. Jupiter and Venus move into your sign, bringing optimism and the ability to attract what you need. Relations with others will be happy and easy, and you'll be popular. Mercury in Leo and your sector of relatives and neighbors will ensure that you're tuned in to the latest news and your social life is busy. You could be the center of attention in several situations. Mars is in your sector of love and romance for most of the month.
Mercury moves through your sign this month, and turns retrograde on July 14. You may dominate conversations and require a lot of attention, but you'll be engaging and charming with everyone you meet. People respond to your warm and generous nature, but you'll have to pay attention to what others have say and not ignore important details. Jupiter and Venus in Gemini will bring good times with friends and associates and the chance to reconnect in a relaxing atmosphere. The Full Moon in Capricorn on July 3 could add stress to the workplace for a few days.

)April 20 - May 20(
)June 21 - July 22(
)August 23 - September 22(
The Sun in Cancer and your sector of relatives and neighbors will help you be the go-to person if anyone needs your support and assistance. You can be a calming and helpful presence. A New Moon in this area of your chart on July 18 will help you make a new start with the people around you. It will also help with building skills and learning new things. You could be inspired to take a short course or workshop in a subject of interest. If you don't have the time, opportunity, or money, you may be able to do some reading or research online.
The Sun in your sign this month helps you feel powerful and creative. Your confidence will soar and you'll have renewed purpose. The New Moon here on July 18 can help you make a new start, build your self-esteem, and feel good about your life. Mars moves to Libra and your sector of home and family early in the month. Expect a few arguments and a tendency to get defensive when challenged. This planet won't be in good aspect to Pluto in your relationship sector, so you'll probably experience a lot of inner tension. The Full Moon in Capricorn will only add to your stress.
If you want to boost your career this month, attend networking events and get some training to update your skills. If you're asked to present material or ideas, you'll be charming and engaging. Others will be interested in what you have to say, and this could bring new opportunities. Mars is in your sign until July 3, bringing a proactive approach and the ability to be assertive. You'll be supportive for a few weeks if a friend or group needs your help. Your ruler Mercury turns retrograde in Leo on July 14, bringing the need to be careful and aware of details. Being distracted will cause problems and possibly losses or misunderstandings.

The Sun in Cancer, Uranus in Aries, and Pluto in Capricorn make it clear that life won't be too easy this month. You'll have to balance your career, family, and personal relationships. All of this will put pressure on you, and it might be difficult to cope at times. You'll have to set priorities and delegate tasks. Do only those for which you have the time and energy. Mars moves to your sign on July 3, adding to the strain. You'll be more confident and assertive, but others could take this the wrong way. The people in your life are used to calling the shots.
Be open, honest, and respectful when communicating with your spouse, business partner, or the public. Diplomacy and a high level of cooperation will be necessary. This could be difficult to achieve at times, but it's possible. Mars in Virgo until July 3 will make it necessary to attend to details regarding your career. You might have to put some energy into learning new skills or updating your resume. A Full Moon in Capricorn could bring some stress over money matters. You might be forced to deal with things you've been avoiding, such as paying bills or making a budget.
You'll feel upbeat, fun-loving, and flirtatious with Jupiter and Venus in Gemini and your sector of love and creativity. Others will find you attractive and charming, and if you're single you may meet someone special. Mars in Libra for most of the month will bring a desire to take a vacation somewhere relaxing, such as an all-inclusive resort. Go somewhere you can meet new people, have little to do, and eat and drink 24/7. If funds are tight, try to find that kind of experience closer to home. Mercury will be retrograde in Leo as of July 14. Misunderstandings could become more frequent.

)October 23 - November 21(
)December 22 - January 19(
)February 19 - March 20(
There could be a chance to travel to your childhood or family home if you live far away. You also might take a trip to the place where your ancestors came from. This would be a good time to do some reading about things you're passionate about. The right book or information will magically appear when you need it. A New Moon in Cancer on July 18 will bring the urge to talk or write about your early experiences or family life. You might decide to take a cooking course, learn about working with children, or build your skills in home repair.
Pluto and a Full Moon in Capricorn on July 3 will bring a sense of uneasiness and possibly a small personal crisis. You might feel overwhelmed by responsibilities or financial issues. It will be important to face and deal with your problems. A New Moon in Cancer will bring plenty of support from your partner or people you're close to. All you have to do is ask and be willing to receive help if you need it. It isn't always necessary to be the strong one. Jupiter and Venus will be bringing positive energy to your work and health sector.
Neptune is retrograde in your sign, so you might feel a little lost and confused this month. You'll be highly intuitive and creative, however. If you're musical or artistic, this would be a good time to express yourself. The Sun in Cancer and your sector of love and creativity will strengthen a desire to nurture and mentor others. Jupiter and Venus in Gemini could bring misunderstandings with family or people with whom you share your home. Be honest with others. Avoid gossiping and talking behind someone's back. Mercury retrograde in Leo as of July 14 could bring mistakes at work due to carelessness.
