A back-to-school letter to parents Dear Parents,

The long summer days are nearly over and school time is in! Some of you are relieved that your kids are going back to their normal sleeping schedules and eating habits. And some of you are carrying the burden of the “back-to-school” responsibilities. But what about you guys who are having additional struggles with your children’s learning styles and habits? Are you ready for another challenging school year? Throughout the journey of life, our children grow in multiple environments. Starting with the mother’s womb, the fetus starts learning to adapt to the surroundings. However, there is an inner environment that requires more adaptation; this environment is the person’s mental capability. Our mental and emotional states form people’s personalities. and it is very important for children to grow in environments that allow them to nurture their state of mind and emotional qualities. It is also essential for them to be given the opportunities to interact with role models and healthy surroundings to develop their interactive life skills. After all, it is children’s confidence, attitudes, and behaviors that will greatly affect their future success. To achieve this goal, children must acquire, learn, and execute! You might want to know how that can be achieved. The answer is simple: learning! Learning is the key for all life achievements, and when I state the concept learning, I do not mean education. I mean: • • • • • • •

Learning is the ability to acquire information Learning is obtaining skills Learning is modifying behavior Learning is problem solving Learning is developing attitude Learning is adapting Learning is living!

If learning is living, how can you recognize your abilities? How can you know if they are learning? How can you detect if they are not learning?

Every Person Can Learn

I strongly believe that every person can learn. Time, space, age, mental abilities, or educational levels do not affect your learning ability. The only factor that affects it is the method of learning. How does a 70-year-old person learn how to use an iPad despite the fact that he was born in an era when TV was still a new invention? How do children nowadays have intensive abilities to September 2012 12

use technology? How can a blind person read? How can people with different languages communicate? The process of learning is related to acquiring information; therefore, it is dependent on human intelligences. According to the Howard Gardner Theory of Multiple Intelligences, humans have a bunch of intelligences that they use to operate their cognitive system and mental abilities. These intelligences exist in all of us; however, we are not trained use them all on equal levels. For example, if your child does not know how to learn languages as fast as her classmate, it does not mean that she is any less successful! It means that she has to learn these languages in another way or use another method that triggers her best approach of learning. That explains why our skills and talents are drastically different! We all can run, but not all of us become Olympic athletes. Not because we can’t; it is because we were not trained to do so. Yes, there are genetic inheritances that affect the level of achievements in a certain skill but it does not affect our ability to learn that skill.

personally. All you need to do as parents is learn how to identify the problem, work hand in hand with the educational systems, and acquire patience and compassion. Remember to never label your own children with negative words or actions that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Learning Disability or Exceptional Ability?

What to Look For

I also strongly believe that learning disabilities are mostly categorized under “disabilities” because we assume that people learn the same way. If people have different levels of intelligences, then it is impossible for all of us to learn maths, music, arts, or sciences the same way! And when a mental challenge is involved, then it is up to you as parents to discover what these challenges are and it up to you to carve a learning plan for your child. Do not label your child as slow, stupid or lazy! Your child might just need closer attention to his learning and educational process. Your child has no learning disability, he/she has exceptional ability! The word ‘disability’ itself is a label that may affect the psychological status of your child while learning. I find it rather disturbing to label a child with a “you-can’t-do-it” concept. I would rather tell this child: “You can do it differently!”

Learning Challenges not Learning Disabilities

In my book of learning, they are called learning challenges. These exceptional children have above-average intelligence; however, they face learning problems because they simply process information differently. Throughout interventions and careful parental observation, the majority of these children succeed academically, socially and

Identifying the Learning Challenges Designing how your children learn can defeat their learning challenges. Parents should have the ability to recognize both strengths and weaknesses in their children. However, it takes a special eye to recognize learning challenges in children. I advise future parents to always research children’s developmental issues when they know their offspring are on their way. Today with the flat age of media, it is rather simple to further research topics and keep in touch with communities that have similar experiences with their children. But today is your lucky day dear parents, because I am going to give you some clues that may help you identify the challenges if they exist. The following are some factors that might trigger your worries. Remember that you need to see repetitive patterns to confirm your observations and worries. Also note that every child is different; therefore, do not compare children’s developmental processes with those of others. The following factors are categorized by age or developmental stages:

Pre-School Children (toddlers) • Difficulty in language (speaking and matching words) • Restlessness (hyperactivity that affects concentration or sleep) • Difficulty interacting with social surroundings.

School Children • Difficulty in making connections between letters and their sounds (they will always exhibit the same mistake) • Loss of time-orientation • Difficulty in learning new skills • Resorting for memorization instead of understanding • Poor organization skills • Disregard of physical surroundings (will not care for damage) • Sensory difficulties

Teens and Early Adulthood • • • • • • • • • • • •

Organization problems Social fear or difficulties in socializing Lack of attention in class or when needed Day-dreaming (imagination gone wild) Poor test-scoring Poor memory Short attention span Difficulty following directions Difficulty in reading and poor writing skills Inability to adapt to change Lack of behavioral pattern Sensory difficulties

Parental Solutions Family units and schools are developed to cater to children’s needs. Parental instincts play a great

role in raising children, but there is a point in their lives when they will need more planning, information, and external nurturing. This is where the educational role comes in. There are no “one size fits all” solutions for learning disabilities. I strongly believe in the multi-disciplinary coordination to produce better solutions. 1. Be open to the possibility of joining a special education network. Try to learn what your child is going through so you can better prepare yourself for the process of special learning. 2. Try to pay attention to the symptoms above and how often they develop or occur. 3. If your child needs special attention in his edu-

cation, hire a part -time special educator. Do not let your child join a special education classroom because of a learning challenge. Mixing in with other children and different abilities helps them rise to the occasion and accept to challenge themselves to be better learners. Educators should be trained to deal with children with learning challenges; therefore, they can understand and help them overcome difficulties when needed. 4. Help your children to build healthier self-esteem and confidence. 5. Be patient. 6. Be compassionate. 7. Do not label your child and always remember that your child is an exceptional learner!

Medals and Dreams Dear Readers,

I am so happy to connect with you once again during the month of September. The 2012 Olympics have ended with the most ambitious individuals demonstrating their skills and merit. An excellent parallel to the reality of life, the Olympics provide a unique glimpse of how to achieve success through hard work, dedication, and the mind-frame of a winner. As a Mars Venus Business/Life coach, I meet with many driven individuals who also seek success but in a different arena, life and/or business. Similar to the Olympic athletes, these individuals are on a quest for success and understand that success must be in the mind before it can be achieved. Through coaching, individuals are reprogrammed to attain the characteristics of a successful individual and master the skills required. For those of you who also seek success in your lives, an excellent point to start is by understanding and mastering the ‘5 Main Characteristics of Successful Individuals’ which are described below: The 5 Main Characteristics of Successful Individuals

1. Faith and Optimism

First and foremost, you must have faith in yourself and your abilities. Do you think the Olympic winners doubted their abilities? The successful have unbreakable faith and unwavering belief that they will achieve greatness. Along your path, you may have a moment of weakness where you feel insecure and a little doubtful, it’s ok, but make sure it is not more than a passing moment. Don’t let doubt eat you up, let it motivate you to move forward. Remember quitters never win and winners never quit.

2. Do What You Love and Excel at it

If you do what you love, you will never have to work a day of your life because going to “work” means going to have fun. The winners of the Olympics loved their sport and enjoyed spending every waking minute either in the swimming pool or playing on the tennis courts, etc… The athletes have taken what they love, excelled at it and learned all the inner workings of their passion. Remember, knowledge is power. If you are a business owner or an employee on your way up the corporate ladder, take time to study and build a wealth of knowledge so that you are a couple steps ahead of the pack.

3. Relationships and Networking

Relationships are a commodity that are vital to all successful people. The successful are associated with multiple groups which provide them with a reference, a buffer, and a support system. It is through networking that these individuals gain opportunities and resources to achieve their dreams and goals. Even the great Olympic athletes began at a sports club which developed their skills and allowed them to move onto the next stage. Networking is all about keeping in touch with the people you know and connecting with new people. Keep in mind, to have a healthy network of relationships, you have to actively give, as well as expect to receive. A solid network will serve you well for years to come and will be an additional tool in your toolbox especially during these times of economic uncertainty. Success is achieved with a network and, without networking, we’d be forced to go it alone. September 2012 14

4. Manage Your Time and Energy Wisely

The greatest commodity we all have is time and few know this more than an Olympic athlete who is racing against the clock to reach optimum levels of performance before the day of competition. Remember, we only have 24 hrs in one day and we cannot buy any more. Each day comes once and is gone forever so it must be used effectively. Ensure that the hours you are awake are fully utilized as well as fully energized. Make sure you keep physically fit through exercise and a healthy diet. Keeping fit allows greater blood-flow to our brain, enhanced alertness, and improved focus. So remember to manage your time and energy wisely.

5. Stop the Excuses

We all have a voice in our head that tells us to work hard, never quit and focus on the task at hand. It also pushes us to aspire towards our utmost potential. On the opposite end, we also have a voice that tells us to take a break, procrastinate, and be lazy. Ignore the voice of laziness and listen to the voice of action and ambition. Sometimes life can be difficult but do not allow that to become an excuse. Push forward. Excuses will only slow you down. Nike may have said it best to all athletes “Just Do It” which can be translated into all aspects of our lives. Dear readers, I have outlined the main aspects to focus on to reach success. These are only the top of the glacier, so to speak. In the quest for success, perseverance and a focused mind-frame are key to achieving this goal. The role and value of the coach is vital both for those who reached the Olympics and those who want to reach success in life. So, go forward and reach for your dreams! I wish you success and luck on your path. If you have any questions, comments, or stories, I would love to hear from you so please connect with me!

Back to School, But Not Back to Bad Habits

I

woke up one morning, a few days ago, while spending time in Indianapolis and realized that the new school term had begun. The traffic was heavier, and there were again many younger faces, with expressions either of utter excitement or dismay, as they sat the in buses, cars and minivans on their way to school. When I arrived at the hospital and research buildings, the atmosphere was also buzzing about the new school term. My colleagues with children looked a bit more exhausted and made mention of it. Also, when I took a walk across the university’s campus during lunch, I noticed the campus center was packed with students, staff and professors rushing to buy and consume meals before their next class or meeting. As I continued to look around I began to focus on these individuals food choices. Well, let me tell you: the lines for the fried chicken, fries and hamburgers were packed, which made it quite easy to grab a salad. It was also difficult to get an after-lunch coffee. I stood in line for about 15 minutes,

September 2012 16

and then had to gladly pass on the 3 to 6 servings of syrup, the free promotional drink upgrade, as I saw my friends and several other students purchase cookies, and I kid you not, as large as one of my hands. I’m a big fellow, so hence these were big cookies. These mundane events got me to think that such situations are not limited to settings within this institution. Younger children and other adults across the globe must also be affected by the return to school. These thought continued, and allowed me wonder about the health and overall well-being during this abrupt transition period. Think about it: with the restart of school, your days will probably begin a bit earlier. Chances are you may have to marshal an uncooperative youngster after negotiate with your snooze alarm into giving you five more minutes. Kids and college students, you too have to force yourself to get out of bed as you get back into the normal routine of classes, after-class assignments and exams.

This is followed by an even speedier breakfast that in all reality will be obtained from a drive-thru or a convenience stand. The demands on your time make it harder and harder to pack proper meals and snacks for your children, and far less yourself. Thus your child and you can end up as part of the cafeteria situation I presented above. The long-term effects of this can lead to poor work and academic performance, and an overall strain on your health. Now it troubles me to complicate this situation by focusing on children and adults with special health needs, but, since my focus is health and improving awareness on growing medical concerns within Kuwait, let us consider the following scenario. It is well known, or should be well known, that Kuwait has unfortunately become a hub for both juvenile and adult diabetes. This means that there is a significant population within this state that is highly sensitive to their food intake. Going back to work or school with a healthy snack and choosing to purchase healthier meal options like salads

and fresh juices, instead of drinks with high fructose corn syrup are simple actions that can make major impacts. And of course, adults and youngsters can engage in various activities to help shed a few pounds, with the passing of Ramadan and the sweltering summer. This unfortunate scenario that I presented does not have to define our future. We can stop poor habit repetition by making little efforts and strides to first recognize and then address issues like these presented. We can all make an impact by taking the time to think further on these topics, break the bad habits to help you, your family and your friends within this nation move into the future with a healthier outlook that will make the contributions necessary for Kuwait’s continued development. As we go back to our routine, let us remember to make better choices.

What about your heart?

Y

our summer vacation is over and you’re back to your daily routine. You’re back to waking up to the sound of the alarm clock, enduring morning traffic, going from meeting to meeting and dealing with deadlines, to-do lists and work assignments. Many will find the transition from vacation mode to the regular routine to be quite annoying. Personally I believe this has more to do with our choices than it does with the fact that we’re going back to work. If you’re feeling very stressed, depressed, sad, or generally negative about going back to work, I think the root question you want to ask yourself is: why? Why are you not happy about going back to work? The answer is, most of the time, because you’re not doing what you’re doing from your heart and therefore you’re not happy. How many times have you read people complain about how their weekend is short, and how they hate Sundays? I certainly read that a lot. What we need to remember is that whenever you do something from your heart, it flows very easily. When your daily job is something that you do from your heart, you will in fact be excited about going back to work. Not negative, not worried, not depressed, but rather happy! I used to be a biomedical engineer working for a hospital. My job was excellent in the sense that it was paid very well and I had a chance to grow careerwise. The atmosphere was great. I had the freedom to come and go whenever I wanted. In that sense, it wasn’t restrictive. If I wanted to be late, I could. If I wanted to leave early, I could. To many people, this was a dream job. It wasn’t a dream job to me, though. To me it felt like a prison, and that’s because I wasn’t doing it from the heart. It wasn’t what I wanted to do for a living. I was sitting in front of my computer one day and all of a sudden it hit me: I felt useless. What I was doing for a living wasn’t making me happy. I felt blissful whenever I went on a vacation, but going back to work was an absolute horror to me! I decided to make a plan. My plan was to find what I want to do for a living, and that must be September 2012 18

something that I enjoy doing. I set a time-frame for myself: I must leave this job within two years. The moment I left the job, I was pleasantly surprised that everything fell into place. My finances were sorted out, I was comfortable with what I have, even though I just quit my job which was my main source of income. I was working, but I was working effortlessly, and that’s a point worth stressing. There will be no struggle if your work comes from the heart. You will love your job and not complain about it at all — you will enjoy every moment. By doing that, you will have a positive impact even on those around you. Yes, you will be helping others by being true to yourself and loving your what you do — or doing what you love. Helping others doesn’t have to be literal; you can help others just by being happy. Your happiness will radiate on the atmosphere around you and affect others. I strongly believe that everyone has a unique gift, and it is our responsibility to find out what our specialty is, what our uniqueness is, and after we find out we need to excel in honing that gift.

When its about the IRONMAN Race at breath taking “Zell Am See with the six Kuwaiti achivers pictures will show the glory! How did we start?

We started training for the ironman 70.3 about six months ago. After being involved in this sport for a year, and some of us more than that, we decided to undergo a bigger challenge and register for ironman 70.3 in Zell Am See.

Tell us about the experience in details of participating in Ironman Race Zell Am See 2012

A race such as ironman 70.3 requires excessive training, sometimes harder than the race itself. Practice took place during really hard circumstances at times. With all the training and all the injuries, we finally made it. The race, which took place on the 26th of August in Zell Am See, Austria, started with a swim of 1.9 km in Zeller lake followed by a 90 km cycling. This is where we faced some difficulties due to sudden rain showers and a decrease in temperature. This also lead to slippery roads which was hard to tackle. The hardest part came last : the run. This was not a normal run it was half a marathon (21.1km). As you can imagine, our legs were completely exhausted, so this was the toughest challenge where the mind over took the body and the positive thinking played a vital role in completing the race.

How do you feel about it?

What we have accomplished is amazing. Lastly, we would like to thank The Three Club and Kuwait Extreme Team for all their help and support during our training and for introducing the sport of Triathlon to us and the Kuwaiti society.

18 Most Inspirational Olympic Moments of All Times

1. Miracle on Ice

In 1980, a group of amateur-looking hockey players changed the course of history by showing that sometimes inexperience can be the biggest virtue to believe in. The collegiate U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey team stepped onto the field and played a jaw-dropping game, beating the Russian champions, to win their gold medal, silencing all naysayers.

2. Abebe Bikila

The Ethiopian runner proved that with convictions in place, nothing is impossible. In the 1960’s Olympic Games held in Rome, Abebe Bikila immortalised his name in history, by running a marathon barefoot, and winning!

4. Nadia Comaneci

The Romanian gymnast redefined the idea of perfection during the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, by winning three gold medals and becoming the first female gymnast to be awarded with a perfect 10 during the event.

5. Jamaican Bobsled Team

Kudos to the Jamaican Bobsled team for displaying their indomitable spirit by attempting to play at their first ever bobsledding match at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Coming from the land of sun and sea, this team, although couldn’t win medals, surely won hearts with their first attempt.

7. Black Power Salute

The 1968 Olympics jerked a tear out of even the staunchest disbelievers, when American gold medallists John Carlos and Tommie Smith accepted their 200 metre medals barefoot, with raised hands to express their solidarity for their fellow African-Americans.

8. Matthias Steiner

The 2008 Beijing Olympics narrated a bittersweet tale of victory, of an athlete bested by the hands of Fate. The German weightlifting champion Matthias Steiner’s win at the super heavy weight category was tinged with tears, as he appeared on the Games after the death of his wife a year ago. With a heavy heart, he rose to the occasion and cleanly lifted the weight - 30 pounds heavier than his previous record. His celebration was one of the most emotional moments in the history of the Games.

3. Derek Redmond The 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics will never forget the bravery and sheer will of Derek Redmond. The British runner tore his hamstrings, halfway through the 400 metres semi-final race and yet rose to finish his race. The potential tearjerker came soon when his father jumped over the barricade to help his son finish the race. Just steps away from the finish line, he let go, to let Derek cross the line by himself. The crowd cheered in awe and respect. September 2012 24

6. Jesse Owens

At the time when the world was torn apart by racial discrimination, Jesse Owens silenced all naysayers by winning four gold medals for the 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump and 4x100 relay categories of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. While Germany chose to judge Owens’s athletic prowess by his skin colour, Owens’s impending win erased all doubts.

9. Usain Bolt Usain Bolt became the first Jamaican sprinter to break the world and Olympic records of winning all the sprinting events in the 100 and 200 metre category, in the same 2008 Beijing Olympics. This record was previously held by Carl Lewis in 1984.

10. Kerri Strug

Kerri Strug’s historic win at the 1996 Olympic Games was nothing less than a tale of heroic will power. Being an able gymnast, Kerri Strug injured herself seriously during her first attempt at the vault, but it was her sheer will that powered her through to a perfect second attempt. Her glorious landing made the US Women Gymnastics Team beat the recurring Russian champions for the first time in the history of the Games.

13. Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson was nothing less than a Greek god himself, for winning the 200 and 400 metre races in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. That’s not all – he took the 200 metre race by storm, blazing the tracks and finishing at 43.49 seconds, only coming back days later to win the 400 metre race in the same event.

16.Korean Unification Flag

Following decades of unrest post-Korean war, North and South Korea found common ground for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, marching together in the Opening Ceremonies under a unified flag (and uniforms). While the two countries did compete separately, their joint marching symbolized an openness to peace and cooperation.

14. Mary Lou Retton 11. Iason Abramashvili

Iason Abramashvili paid homage to his friend the Georgian Lugar, Nodar Kumaritashvili, after he tragically died while completing a practice run. The news rattled all the Georgian competitors with sorrow, and they swore to dedicate their performance at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, in memory of their friend.

This American gymnast became the first athlete to win a gold medal in the gymnastics category. At the tender age of 16, Mary took on the vault with minimal professional experience and still landed a perfect 10 for her inspiring performance at the 1984 Olympics.

17. Jonny Moseley

Twenty-three-year-old Jonny Moseley swept the slopes in the 1998 Men’s Moguls, thanks to flawlessly clearing the 360-mute-grab on the bumpy terrain. But Moseley didn’t just win an Olympic gold. The move that brought him to the podium was named after him, too.

15. Vasily Alexeev

12. Michael Phelps

The American swimmer went down in Olympics history, by becoming the only man with 8 gold medals in a single Olympics game, at the Olympic Games at Beijing in 2008. That’s not all; his cumulative wins make him the most successful swimmer, with 14 gold medals won in two consecutive Olympic Games.

The Russian weightlifter was a champion in every respect and with his champion prowess; his only competitors at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games were his previous records. After easily besting his German competitor Gerd Bonk, with one clean jerk he lifted 562 pounds and smashed his previous record to smithereens. With such overwhelming moments laid down in Olympic history, one can only hope for more to be added by the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

18. Fahad Al Dehany

And for us in Kuwait we are so proud of our Kuwaiti Team in London Olympics 2012 ... and we would like to thank them for making us proud & happy either they got a medal or not and we wish them the best of luck in the future .

Hello readers!

We hope you’ve had a very fun Eid. We sure did! Anyway, now that the fun is over are you ready to go back to your daily routines? We sure aren’t, especially since we’re going back to ... yes, you guessed it! School! Even as we typed the word “school” our hearts tore into pieces — we’re kidding, we don’t hate school that much! It’s really not that bad. In fact we’re looking forward to seeing our friends and some of our teachers (not all of them!) but we’re absolutely not ready for tests, projects, presentations, and homework! We can’t believe how fast this summer has passed us by! Now we have to go back to the same old routine of waking up at 5:30 in the morning and immediately opening our eyes to find those boring uniforms and repeating this silent mantra, “I hope this day passes by quick, I hope this day passes by quick!” What will be worth all of this trouble is the fact that we will be surrounded by our best friends with so many stories to tell about our summer vacation. Sure, stepping into the classroom will kill all the fun and the assignments will most likely be a nightmare, but we will pull through it all. We’ve done it before! What do you think? Do you like school? Did you enjoy it when you were our age? We personally think it’s a mixture of both. It basically depends on the person who makes the best out of their school years. You know what they say: once these years are over you can’t turn back the time and rewind those days. So that’s why we’re determined to make the most of these years! Have an amazing start to your routines. Don’t forget to always smile and share the joy! -The Jays www.thecitymagazine.net 29

Mohammed a 15 Year Old Kuwaiti Small Business Owner Fried Junk! Setting The Trend For Taste.

Y

oungsters Often Have Dreams To become a doctor or even to become an engineer, but as a proud 15 year old who’s passionate about my business who’s willing to do anything to take it to the next level, proving to Kuwait and to the world that Youngsters can achieve especially teenagers who have dreams but cannot easily be achieved by sitting and dreaming about it, they have to go forth to it, That’s what I did and I’m not stopping till I achieve my dream and goal also honoring my mother’s will. I speak passionately about my business venture and say that I’m giving something to the Kuwaiti community in a new way and proudly say that I’m the first Kuwaiti that fried chocolate in Kuwait & serving people before anyone did. I’m slowly building my dream, brick by brick , Patience is always the key to victory, If a person’s skill and hobby can be combined and propelled by passion, the person can triumph and that’s exactly what I did, I combined pro wrestling with my cooking skills and created something very unique just like my hobby and skill. Chocolate has always been a weakness of mine, before I even started doing the business, I always wanted to serve something to Kuwait in a new way that we can crave for, not like daily malten cakes or cupcakes as were seeing in Expo’s now days, yes they are business’s but were bored, we want something new and new I brought, Chocolate can always be created in new ways, heck even the whole kitchen can be created to new dishes without you even knowing that this thing can go with this, I have my own dishes which I’m mostly specialized with American food or what I call them: American Treats but always be unique, be smart. But I always prefer fried food as heaven on earth, I know it’s bad for your health but who cares, if you work out you won’t get the effect always consume yourself with love & fitness “ Be Positive, Believe In Yourself “ plus; they change the taste of your food to a lot better! Otherwise they wouldn’t have created french fries, hint: fried pizza makes a great meal and fried cola is a die for appetizer. I describe my business as joy. Each time any person eats it, it changes your mood to a lot better, WOMEN I’m hinting out ;P it’s because I fry them with joy and I love doing them, not forgetting that they’re chocolate and they make you happy that’s why mostly women enjoy my business, it’s a mood changer. People might dislike the idea but if you haven’t tried it? Don’t judge it, that’s everything now days, being judged by hearing or looking without trying, that only makes the community down low and not looking up to huge countries who’s business’s are flowing. My target is building a restaurant where everyone can enjoy! A calm place to enjoy your chocolate in a new way and going to the happy place in your mind, the most relaxable place you’d ever wish you can go to from the first bite, I hope my beloved Fried Chocolate will bring smiles to people’s faces and uplift their spirits and the most wonderful aspect of chocolate, it is a mood changer, imagine eating it being extra tasty and filled with extra love.

A Comparative Buzz Report on “Ramadan” Keyword

L

ovely readers of theCITY Magazine ! Hope you all had a great summer, and now school season is back, I thought of sharing couple of interesting information of how Ramadan went on our major internet platforms, which is Blogs! & Instagram :) of course, it was the best solution for many home businesses & Fooooooood! Omg food always wins in “#Kuwait”, no? we all agree ... I know, I will be sharing interesting facts behind our conversations online and the hot topics “#Ramadan2012”. As millions of Muslims prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadan, modern technology and social media have stepped in to help them share their views and wishes during this special time in the Muslim calendar. Muslims are taking this opportunity to raise awareness and encourage one another to make the best of the Holy Month. Companies and organizations are also supporting their social responsibility initiatives on this occasion by offering internet services and mobile applications to help people give a deeper meaning to Ramadan. For example, Nokia’s free “Ramadan application suite” allows users to look for the nearest mosque, keep track of prayer times and browse the Quran, whereas iPhone’s “Ramadan Booster Pro” offers tips and recommendations related to the Holy Month. In addition, MSD pharmaceutical firm launched an iPhone application helping Muslim diabetics make sure they are able to control their blood sugar levels while fasting. All these applications are designed to help users perform their religious rituals with ease and find the right spiritual and physical balance.

Not only have Ramadan-specific technologybased offers increased in recent years, but more and more online users have been using social media platforms to share their thoughts or disseminate important information about the Holy September 2012 32

Month. That’s why in this Buzz report we took a closer look at what social media users have been discussing in relation to Ramadan. The following analysis is based on a sample of 700 tweets out of the total of 3169 unique mentions captured in the UAE and Kuwait. For our search, we used different spelling variations of the keyword “Ramadan” in both English and Arabic, as well as popular Twitter hashtags between July 1st and July 10th 2012.

Arabic is the first official language of the UAE and Kuwait, but findings showed that users in both countries used both Arabic and English to express themselves. In the UAE, 85% of comments were in English compared to 15% in Arabic, whereas 89% of Kuwaiti comments were in Arabic and only 11% were in English. In general, the content in Arabic posted by users in Kuwait mostly came from religious leaders trying to educate people about Ramadan and inspire them to take a more serious interest in their religion. More than two thirds of the volume analyzed was of a religious nature. Users shared videos and pictures that emphasized the spirit of Ramadan to prepare worshippers for the special days to come. The remainder of the volume analyzed was related to charitable events or grantsin-aid within the Arab region. Thus, the bulk of comments were discussing the ethical and religious dimensions of Ramadan by sharing different videos of religious leaders’ speeches on the matter. Many charity-related initiatives were being tweeted, particularly charities directed towards Syria, Africa and needy families in the GCC region. 14% of users also shared information about the different TV shows and series airing during Ramadan; most comments expressed negative sentiments towards them, believing them to be a distraction from prayer and worship, which are the main objectives of Ramadan. Meanwhile, plenty of posts related their prayers and wishes for the Holy Month and expressed their excitement towards it. Due to the low volume of English conversation on social media in Kuwait, it was not possible to

detect distinct trends. Most comments expressed excitement about the upcoming Holy Month, sharing food tips and discussing Ramadan TV shows. A tweet about a charity initiative within the context of Kim Kardashian’s visit to Kuwait was retweeted several times:

Enhance your business with visual marketing The ever-increasing competition between businesses has ensured ‘survival of the fittest’ in every field. Businesses constantly attempt to find creative ways to capture customers’ attention and maintain it.

S

mall businesses suffer even more with limited budgets and intense competition, thus they must try even harder to reach potential customers. On that note, many small businesses in Kuwait have flourished by using Instagram to expand their customer reach. What made them succeed in using Instagram lies in a very simple formula: Visual Marketing + Social Networking = Customers

New

pictures and drawings. All the restaurants, from the little street cafes to expensive fine dining restaurants, have “fake food” displays. The fake food is a replication of the real food that is made out of plastic. It’s displayed at the widows to attract passing customers. The display includes everything: sushi, tempura, spaghetti, fried rice, chocolate cake, etc.

ten description of the dish. The visual’s emotional impact on customers when they see the food in an appealing display is often missed. Here are a few tips to consider when using visual marketing and developing your communication: • Define your target market, what they like, and where to reach them • Design your visual communication in such a way that highlights unique aspects of your products

Visual marketing is broad. However, to keep it simple we can describe it as showing people what you want to say rather than saying it. Japanese businesses have recognized the importance of visual marketing and thus successfully adopted it on all scales.

• Consider adding a call for action such as “Order now”, “Click here for more”, etc. • Make it easy for customers to contact you

A few years ago I visited a zoo in Japan. At the zoo, I noticed that instead of putting up a sign that said “DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS!” they had a small picture story. The message was very convincing and clearly conveyed: “It’s fun to feed the animals, but if you do, the animals will get sick.”

• Avoid over-promising with your visuals and descriptions, i.e. don’t overdress the product • Avoid crowding your visuals with a lot of clutter, focus on your key product • Ensure that what you offer in your visual is available; if there are risks of shortages, it should be addressed ahead to avoid customers’ disappointment

Composing simple visual communication is not very easy; it needs a clear goal and focused attention. However, if you get it right, it can be extremely beneficial to your business. Using a simple picture can better capture customers’ attention and they are more likely to remember your offerings.

Restaurants Menus in Japan

The Japanese visual marketing goes beyond September 2012 34

The story behind the fake food displays in Japan goes back to the late 1920’s when a small restaurant owner wanted to gain a competitive advantage and attract more customers into his restaurant. He came up with the fake food representation using wax to present the food he served and displayed it outside the restaurant window to draw the attention of the people walking by. It was very successful and soon the trend caught on. Today, fake food displays are a standard and are estimated to be a multi-million dollar industry in Japan.

Restaurants Menus in Kuwait When ordering from restaurants or bakeries in Kuwait, you are offered a menu of their dishes, sometimes followed by a description of the dish. However, only a few restaurants go so far as to offer both the visual (picture of the dish) and writ-

What a Franchisee Should Know

I

n recent years, many people have been seen leaving their standard corporate jobs to own franchises. They may be attracted by the kind of control they will have which they want to utilize to determine their own destiny. However, before they decide to buy franchise, they need to understand the franchise program and the franchise agreement. Here are some important things that a franchisee needs to know before going into any agreement.

Typically, agreements with well-established franchise companies are not negotiable. A prospective franchisee should look for a successful system that has been proven to satisfy the current franchisees. Established companies have realized that the most efficient way to administer their systems is to stick to one program and let franchisees sign similar contract forms. Therefore, if there are provisions in the contract form that are not clear and could raise concern, it is important that the franchisee ask for a clarification letter from franchising company. This will create a level of comfort even if the contract is non-negotiable. If a franchising company is willing to change some substantial provisions in the contract, then the franchisee should beware of the company’s level of confidence and validity of its brands. This is important because it is not worth risking while you have paid to be a franchisee. However, as part of diligence, you should always find out if a franchising company can negotiate the franchise contract terms. Initially, there response will be negative, but test this. Occasionally they agree to negotiate, and you will need an expert to negotiate accordingly. Franchisees must also know that franchise agreement contains a lot of rules. The “must-do” things are clearly outlined, and they can really assist a franchisee get better understanding that can help him/her attain business success. Actually, there is no chance of one failing to understand the importance because further specific rules are provided in the contract. Making inquiries from existing franchisees also helps to verify any “must-do” rule in the contract. If after reading the rules you still find yourself not comfortable with any mandatory provision, you should look for a different franchise company to pursue. Another thing to note is that franchise agreement contains rules that forbid the franchisee from doing certain things during business. These rules are referred to as “can’t-dos.” If the franchisor is going reveal its operating secrets to franchisee, then it will require the franchisee not to use the same knowledge. These rules are also meant to protect franchise system together with franchisees from mischievous actions from fellow franchisee. Therefore, it is important to watch these rules because they may affect the success of business. We would all love to do what we like. All franchisees should consider buying franchises that match what they like doing. A prospective franchisee should identify what he/she would like to do while at work. This may include any business they enjoy doing because it is still a reflection of their interests. They need to conduct thorough investigation before investing. They should know how much money they have, how much they can borrow, capital needed, and the time required for profits to plow back. This will help them know exactly what they can afford. In conclusion, franchisees need to get good understanding of the franchise agreements and the franchise programs before signing any contracts with franchise companies. The above mentioned considerations will help a franchisee understand the franchise agreements and their effects in business. However, it is important to seek expert assistance to offer advice and where necessary negotiate contract terms accordingly.

Color psychology

Y

es, colors do have a world of their own. We are affected by everything around us, especially the spaces we live in. Did you know that even the colors you wear are pre-selected by your subconscious mind? We usually wear the color we need for our energy. Colors affect the energies around us thus affecting our energy and perception. When you design your space, you are likely to do so in several ways – choosing objects and colors that look attractive or using an existing pattern or decor theme to govern your decisions. However, color is an influential tool that can be used to stimulate emotions, create space illusions or solely set the mood and atmosphere for any particular room. When used in interior paints , color psychology is a great way to create a healthy and beautiful home. The following are 20 ways to use color psychology in your home.

1. One can create the impression of space with lively colors: If you want your home to look

larger than it really is, use bright and vibrant colors like yellows and eggshells. Many people believe that white is the best color to give the illusion of space, however, avoid the common color white. Although it can add space, it is nowhere near as effective as tinted colors.

2. Build appetites in your kitchen with red:

Red has been shown to increase appetite in most people. Using red in your kitchen to increase appetite doesn’t necessary mean cover your entire kitchen with red, it could be as simple as blending beige walls with red shutters or cabinet doors.

3. Sophisticated crowds are allured by complex colors: While selecting the colors for the

interior or exterior of a house, the highly cultured groups often go with colors that consist of more than one word while on the other side the lower income or people from the lower strata prefer simple colors. When you select complex colors try thinking of names like forest green or egg white shell.

4. Let your lobby be a fusion of the interior and exterior paint: If you want to create a

WOW effect when your visitor enters your foyer, try blending the interior and exterior color in entrance hall. For an overall effect try integrating the exterior colors with the interiors.

5. Warm up your home with deep tones during the winter: The darker the shades the

warmer the place feels. Use of reds, oranges and yellows colors can make your home seem more friendly/hospitable from the outside or warmer on the inside, especially during the winter. So bear this in mind when you are planning to paint your homes. September 2012 42

6. Cool off the summer with colder colors:

Just along the same lines as warm colors for the fall, cool colors, can make your home seem fresh and clean during the summer, especially the blue shade. For summer holiday homes try painting a white exterior with a blue trim.

7. Choose colors from your past: To remind

oneself of fond memories from the past, especially the kitchen space, use familiar colors. Not only does it revive the good old memories but also creates a pleasant mood. If you can’t recall any colors from your kitchen during your growing up phase, remember that reds and yellows are a perfect combination for a lively yet classic kitchen.

8. Use comfortable colors in relaxing rooms:

To enjoy a relaxing atmosphere choose cool shades for your bathrooms and bedrooms. I would suggest shades of blue, green or even lavender to calm yourself in your getaway rooms. But do remember that while applying this technique, the darker the shade the more apparent the effect will be.

9.Stay away from red if you have high blood pressure: Though red and its shades are associ-

ated with an increase of appetite in your kitchen, dark shades of red are often linked to high blood pressure and irritability in certain other spaces of your house. If you plan on a dark shade for your bedroom or living room go for a cool color rather than a warm color.

10. Flatter yourself with a familiar color in the bathroom: If you aren’t comfortable with a

into a forest by over doing which can be highly distracting.

13. Inspire optimism with yellow: Yellow is the right color for a bright and sunny room. A great way to be inspired would be to paint your doorway or the portico with yellow. As you depart for work the yellow shade in this space will give the last boost of optimism you need before launching into the daily routine. 14. Don’t be fooled by purple: Although purple indicates wealth and romanticism, it is very scarce in the natural world and also can look very phony within your home decor. If you do want to go with purple, try blending it with more natural colors like subtle yellows or greens.

15. Blend brown for a natural look in your nest: If you are an enthusiast of wood or leather and have already integrated this earthy look in your interiors applying some brown paints can augment the appeal. But be warned that brown in some people can cause depression .

16. Black isn’t just for a teenager’s room: Black is a tough nut to crack when used for painting a wall. Black shade gives an illusion of tight space and if it’s for fulfilling the wail of your teenager for a black room you could consider a black ceiling with a few stars. If you want to go all out, go ahead and decorate a nighttime landscape theme across the room.

particular color avoid this color for your bathroom at all cost. However, if you love a particular color and think it would suit your personality, consider this color for your bathroom. Having the desired color in the background really matters.

17. Pink for tranquility: One will be mightily surprised at the effect of the pink shade in a room for mediation or relaxation. Pink is known for the lack of energy and hence it is avoided in workout rooms and locker rooms

11. Combine moods for an aggressive workout room: Though it makes sense to use red paint

18. Bathroom fixtures and their white connection: White not only suggests fertility but also

12. Concentrate your home or office with green: “Green inspires,” a highly apt quote and

19. Trust orange for a sick room: Orange is often related to an increase in energy levels and development of lung function. An orange shade not only goes well with a convalescing space but also in a workout room.

in a training room, it can also create a reverse effect and actually overdo the sensation of feeling hot. If you want to go for a warm color in your workout room, I would suggest a fusion of blue and yellow paint and for a cooling effect on extended workouts go for a relaxing combo of green-blue.

to know how true it is ask a painting contractors and they will tell you how popular green is. Green motivates attention and absorption in a home office environment. The faster you accomplish your task the more time you spend with your family. I can suggest adding a plant or painting with light green. However, don’t convert your home office

cleanliness. This is one reason you see many bathroom fixtures are of white shade. It not only aids in easy cleaning but also adds a crisp and fresh look.

20. When nothing works nature is the muse: When all things fail, select colors that remind you of nature. Colors of nature blend perfectly with any home interiors, but for the exterior choose bright shades because they create a very hospitable feel.

Places to See Before They Disappear

Endangered travel destinations around the world

Many of the world’s most wondrous and beautiful destinations are in danger of being destroyed by a combination of environmental and social factors: a warming climate, pollution, strained resources, bulging populations, and booming tourist traffic. Below are some popular locations worth visiting before they disappear.

United States and Canada Glacier National Park contains

some of the most beautiful, primitive wilderness in the Rocky Mountains. There are more than 200 glacier-fed lakes, high peaks, sheer precipices, large forests, waterfalls, much wildlife, and a great variety of wildflowers. However, temperature fluctuations have caused glacier growth and depletion. Ten thousand years ago, the area of Glacier National Park was covered by ice up to one mile below sea level. The latest warm period has caused the number of glaciers to decrease from 150 in 1850 to 26 today. If current global warming trends continue, there will be no glaciers left in Glacier National Park by 2030.

The Dead Sea Border between Israel and the West Bank (W) and Jordan (E)

Known as one of the saltiest water bodies in the world and the lowest dry point on earth, the Dead Sea is fed by the Jordan River and a number of small streams. Because it is located in a very hot and dry region, the Dead Sea loses much water through evaporation, causing its level to fluctuate during the year. However, inflow to the Dead Sea has been greatly reduced by the increased use of the Jordan River by Israelis, Palestinians, and Jordanians, who have growing populations and increased agricultural needs, resulting in falling water levels. Currently, the Dead Sea recedes about three feet each year.

Mexico City, Mexico

In the past 100 years, Mexico City has sunk more than 30 feet. The original city was built on the site of a former lake— the Aztecs built the city on a series of aquatic platforms, but when the Spanish conquered the city, they drained the lake, causing it to sink. As the city population ballooned and the demand for water increased in the 20th century, the government began pumping much of the city’s supply out of the underground aquifer that once fed the lake, causing the city to sink further. No practical plan has been made for the future to provide the 22 million inhabitants of Mexico City with the water they need without destroying the city. September 2012 48

Venice, Italy

Venice, a city of beauty and charm, was built as a collection of 118 separate islands, relying entirely on a canal system of about 150 canals, mostly very narrow, crossed by some 400 bridges. With as many as 40 floods per year between March and September, Venice is slowly sinking at an estimated rate of 2.5 inches every 10 ten years. A severe flood in December 2008 brought renewed attention to Venice’s vulnerable state and imminent fate as an underwater city.

Great Barrier Reef

It’s so large that it can be seen from space, but the Great Barrier Reef is disappearing at an increased rate because of climate change. Rising ocean temperatures, water pollution, ocean acidification and cyclones continually pummel the reef and have caused mass coral bleaching. What took 8,000 years for nature to create could disappear within our lifetimes.

Taj Mahal, India

A mausoleum in northern India on the Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian Islamic architecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ordered it built after the death of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, is visited by three to four million tourists each year. The crowds and air pollution, however, have caused irreversible damage to the building’s façade, prompting tourism officials to consider closing the historic site to the public.

Great Wall of China

One of the world’s great landmarks, the Great Wall of China, has lost about two-thirds of its length after years of decay. Around a third of the 2000-year-old structure is merely rubble and the same amount again has completely disappeared, reported the Beijing Daily newspaper. Much of the destruction has been put down to generations of farmers tearing out chunks of the wall and using it to build homes, stables or repair fences. The erosion is so far spread that the World Monuments Fund has put the Great Wall on a list of the 100 most endangered structures.

Olympia, Greece

One of them is Olympia, Greece. Home to the Temple of Zeus and location of the first Olympic Games, this historical milestone has been of central value to Western culture for centuries. Nowadays, however, very hot and dry summers have amplified the incidence of wildfires in the region. With temperatures forecasted to continue rising as rainfall is reduced, these fires could become a bigger threat in the future.

The wall is a great symbol of historical pride to China and is famously said to be the only man made object visible with the naked eye from space. But in October Yang Liwei, China’s first man in space, said to popular dismay he could not see it. Building work began on the structure in the 3rd Century BC during the Qin dynasty and was originally designed to keep out marauding forces. At its peak, the structure reached 4,500 miles from South Korea to the Gobi desert. www.thecitymagazine.net 49

How to Overcome the Post Vacation Blues Almost everyone who enjoys traveling is subject to what is commonly known as the post-vacation blues, A type of stressed or blue mood that can affect you in the period after returning from a long-awaited vacation.

Having to get back into the routine of work, school, and daily life in general can be a source of distress, disorientation and discomfort as you feel you just can’t settle back in. Indeed, for some people, post-vacation blues can result in a feeling that you no longer want to keep doing what you’re doing and all you can think about is making an enormous change to your life.

• Loss of appetite or perhaps even an increase in appetite

While it may be unpleasant, the post-vacation blues can be overcome with a little determination and a focus on accepting what the vacation gave you and how valuable your everyday life is.

In some cases, depression; if you suspect you’re depressed, see your doctor immediately.

This article provides several tips on making that happen.

Recognize the symptoms. Some vacationers don’t have a problem easing back into their everyday routines following a long and pleasurable trip, but many others do, and it isn’t uncommon. Some signs that you may be suffering from what is clinically known as posttravel depression (PTD) include: • Tiredness or restlessness, perhaps nervous energy that distracts you from focusing on any single thing

• Sadness, tears and feeling blue • Inability to settle down and do your usual tasks • Anger might be a possibility for some, especially if the vacation was supposed to resolve issues that remain outstanding

Expect to feel somewhat deflated after a great vacation. Time expands when we travel or experience new things and our sense of freedom from the usual constraints of routine, daily chores and deadlines is immense. Returning to routine flattens the sense of extended time and freedom from mustdo tasks, catapulting you back into the same old reality that was there before you left. It is perfectly normal to feel deflated and to carry a sense of loss after such changed circumstances for a time.

• Don’t rush yourself to get over the experience. There are good sides to memories too but equally, you need to go through the transition of feeling out of sorts and blue because you have experienced something very different that meant a great deal to you. Letting go of the rush and excitement of that experience and allowing it to settle in as fond memories takes time.

Realize that your vacation doesn’t necessarily end here.

If you went away and experienced different cultures, pace of life, scenery, food, etc., then you’ve opened up new doors in your life. You have been touched by possibilities that weren’t a part of your life before and it’s vital to keep this aspect of your vacation well and truly alive. The good news is that you can keep your vacation alive in a number of ways: September 2012 52

• If you took lots of photos or videos on your trip, or purchased any unique souvenirs, just going through them can help make it easier to remember the new places and experiences you were able to see. Spend time arranging them into formats that you enjoy working with and that make viewing or watching them easier for you and others. • Think about what you enjoyed a lot on your vacation and consider creating a bridge from that culture to yours. If you enjoyed a particular cuisine in another country, purchase a cookbook of that cooking style and start trying out the recipes at home. Bring the flavors right back into your kitchen! You can bring the culture of another country back into your life in many ways, including through dancing, craft, art, clothing, learning the language, watching films or documentaries, connecting to online friends in that country, writing a novel or short story about your vacation, etc. • In some cases, joining a class can help keep your spirits buoyed, such as cooking, dance or art classes that reflect the cultural experience your vacation brought you into contact with. • And best of all, get out a jar, label it “My next vacation” and start your vacation fund right away to save up for a return visit.

Think about how your vacation experience can inform good small changes in your life.

A large part of the post-vacation blues derives from a desire to change everything about your life because you feel so fed up or bored with how things are back in your “ordinary” life.

• Meet people again. Vacations often bring us into contact with new people and remind us how easy it is to make new friends provided we’re prepared to try. Take this lesson and apply it to your post-vacation self. Get in touch with friends you haven’t caught up with for a while. Go out and make new friends through work, play, hobbies, sports and other things you participate in. It’s possible you might even befriend someone else who is feeling the postvacation blues and who could even end up as your next travel buddy!

Share your experiences with a friend or family member.

Thursday or Friday so that the weekend is just around the corner and kudos to those who can manage this around a long weekend! • Resume your usual diet and fitness routines as soon as possible. Many vacationers enjoy splurging on meals and getting the most relaxation in as they can, but this can be unhealthy if it has gone on for more than a few days, especially if you’ve noticed more weight or being out of shape. Taking a walk, going for a jog, or preparing a healthy meal can all help you adjust back to your typical lifestyle. Alternatively, if your vacation was non-stop activity with healthy food, maintain the pace!

It would be a mistake to try and cover up all the experiences of your vacation to just blindly push yourself back into the daily grind. Instead, find the things that really stood out for you in terms of your routines that you’d like to incorporate more of into your regular life. Some examples of things travelers discover include: • Living on less. When traveling, you discover you can often “make do” and still have the time of your life. Perhaps now is a great time to declutter your house and live more simply. • Using the cell phone and the internet a lot less. When you’re traveling, cell phone and internet use soon turn into a case of using it only to keep people informed and to check that nothing untoward has happened. Apart from that, you’re usually not constantly talking or surfing for the sake of it; instead, you’re experiencing the rest of life, large. Take this experience and apply it to your everyday life and spend less time connected to technology and more time connected to people, places and events instead. • Watch TV because you need to know something, not because you’re filling in time. When traveling, weather reports and local news are probably the important aspects of TV, if you even watch TV at all. Few people go on a vacation just to travel and sit in the hotel room watching TV all day. Use your travel experience to change the pace of TV watching in your daily life and to make definite choices about what is worth watching and about either not turning on the TV, or turning it off when the chosen program has ended. • Change your appearance and your health routine. Often vacation time sees a transformation from a worn out self to a rejuvenated, calmer and happier self. This should be you all the time! Consider the ways in which you can achieve this through better/longer sleep patterns, more time spent at a spa, more targeted exercise routines and caring for your nutrition. And do things that make you happy and give you a sense of taking a break from it all, from massages to an afternoon playing tennis.

As soon as you find the time once you’ve unpacked, you might find it helpful to recount your travel experiences with someone, or post any thoughts about the trip, interesting stories, funny mishaps, etc. using social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. However, realize that people won’t be so excited about your trip or experience as you are because they didn’t have the same experiences as you and it’s fairly hard to imagine another’s vacation. However, while sharing with others, take care to realize that sympathy for post-vacation blues is fairly hard to come by, owing to the fact that most people focus on the fact that you actually had a vacation, not that you feel upset upon your return. • It can be helpful to make a public page of your vacation photos so that more people can be inspired by your travels. Just be sure that any personal information revealed in photos or text is by choice, so that you keep private experiences private.

Take care of yourself.

There are a number of important “personal care” ways to help transition between your vacation back into your usual routine. These include: Try to avoid jumping back into work as soon as you get home. While it may help take your mind off the post-vacation blues, it could also have the opposite effect, and make you feel regret for taking time off when you encounter all of the unread emails in your inbox, overdue paperwork, missed calls, etc.

• Ensure plenty of time for a proper night’s sleep. Unless you’ve planned out several days off from work, studies or school following your trip, avoid scheduling a return flight that lands anytime after dark. Your body will thank you with enough energy for the next day, and having the time to start unpacking before you become exhausted will help boost your spirits. • Spend time around family and friends to ease yourself back into normal life. They can be a source of great support as well as being keen listeners to your tales; ask for hugs when in need.

Start planning a return trip.

The best way to overcome the post-vacation blues is to know you have another vacation to look forward to. If you’re financially able, start looking for transportation, lodging, etc. early as well for the least expensive rates and ticket prices. Or at the very least, start saving up and putting aside money every week toward the next vacation. It will soon add up and it’s a great way to focus yourself when you’re tempted to waste money on sugary treats or anything other light vice that you can do without.

• Slowly ease back into work after your vacation when you feel you are ready, or when your days off run out. Some people like to go back on a www.thecitymagazine.net 53

Hidden Treasures Of The Middle East

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Apamea, Syria

A flourishing city during the Roman and Byzantine empires, Apamea today is perhaps the best place in the world to visit massive ruins in near solitude. Its crown jewel is the Cardo Maximus, a colonnade-lined main street that runs for nearly 500 feet.

The dramatic sandstone rock formations of Jordan’s largest valley are perhaps best known in connection with British Officer T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, who based his operations here during the 1917 to 1918 Arab Revolt. Its surreal landscape and strong Bedouin culture makes it an idyllic spot for a time-warp camping trip by camel or horseback.

Qadisha Valley, Lebanon Musandam Peninsula, Oman

This remote peninsula off the northern tip of Oman is one of the most isolated and beautiful spots in this up-and-coming country. Its rocky seaside cliffs lend it the nickname the Norway of the Gulf. Rent a dhow, a traditional wooden boat used by Omani fishermen, to explore the limestone fjords and look for dolphins. September 2012 54

One of the deepest and most beautiful valleys in Lebanon, Qadisha offers excellent hiking opportunities within a relatively concentrated area. Driving from the crest of the Mount Lebanon cedar groves to the bottom of the 3,300-foot Qadisha gorge takes just half an hour. Trek through the small mountainside villages (home to Maronite monasteries) or tackle the 10,131-foot Qornet es-Sawda for panoramic views of the Lebanese coastline.

Meda’in Salah, Saudi Arabia

The “little sister” to Jordan’s ancient city of Petra, Meda’in Salah is one of the least-known ruins in the world. The second major hub of the second century Nabatean Empire, it has over 130 tombs carved out of red-cliff walls. Earlier this year it was named Saudi Arabia’s first World Heritage Site.

Esfahan, Iran

Esfahan is considered Iran’s most beautiful city. Blue-tiled Islamic architecture and majestic bridges contrast with the hot, dry desert climate of central Iran. This city is renowned not only for the abundance of great historical monuments, but also for its Life-Giving River, The Zayandeh-Rood, which has given the city an original beauty and a fertile land. Esfahan is filled with old gardens and some of the best sights in Iran.

Mohammad Al-Qenaei’s quirky clay characters We fell in love with the funny quirky figurines of Mohammad Al-Qenaei when we first saw them on Instagram. We knew immediately that we want his art to be featured to our readers. The label of being a ‘slow’ learner did not stop this inspiring positive young gentleman from pursuing his passion for arts. He started at an early age and with the support of family and friends, he nurtured his talent. We had a quick chat with him. Here is what he told us.

When did you start working on clay?

I started to take playing with clay more seriously at the age of 11, but stopped at the age of 16 and resumed working at 23. I’m 29 now.

Have you had any exhibitions?

So far I held three exhibitions, all under the patronage of the Ministry of Social Affairs. All of them were successful, thank God. I’m planning to hold my own exhibition soon, I’m just finishing a collection of clay figurines.

What inspires you to make the characters you make?

I usually look around and observe people around me. When I’m sitting in a coffee shop or walking around in a mall I study people’s characters, keep an eye open to see their attitudes and that is what I convey. Of course I translate these emotions differently, it’s the way I see it, or the emotions I like to preserve.

What are your future plans?

I’d love to take sculpting classes, but sadly we have no such a thing here. Ideally I’d love to take a full course, maybe even a degree. Perhaps I’ll do that in Italy or somewhere in Europe.

What are the challenges that face you as an artist?

There are many challenges that face anyone interested in arts here in Kuwait. Lack of resources, lack of interest and appreciation to name a few, but I faced a problem unique to the art that I’m interested in: many people seem to think that sculpting is forbidden in our religion. I think that is a strange thing to say, it’s a gift from God and I love it.

Anyone in particular you like to thank?

I’d like to thank my sister Alia who kept supporting me and who never stopped believing in me. I’d also like to thank theCITY Magazine for their interest in my work.

Hypertension: The Silent Killer

H

ypertension or high blood pressure is a condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is chronically elevated. With every heartbeat, the heart pumps blood through the arteries to the rest of the body. Blood pressure is the force of blood that is pushing up against the walls of the blood vessels. If the pressure is too high, the heart has to work harder to pump, and this could lead to organ damage and several illnesses such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, aneurysm, or renal failure . Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure., You can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure typically develops over many years, and it affects nearly everyone eventually. Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected, and once you know you have high blood pressure you can work with your doctor to control it. In general, hypertension has been highly associated with the following conditions: -Smoking -Obesity -Diabetes -Sedentary lifestyle -Lack of physical activity -High levels of salt intake (sodium sensitivity) -Insufficient calcium, potassium, and magnesium consumption -Vitamin D deficiency -High levels of alcohol consumption -Stress -Aging -Medicines such as birth control pills -Genetics and family history of hypertension -Adrenal and thyroid problems or tumors

With its open concept, clients can watch as their food is being prepared by the kitchen staff, and the great ventilation system works incredibly to keep you from smelling like a kitchen apron. table was on the first floor. The ambience and decoration are extremely comfortable and welcoming, especially the front of the restaurant which consists of glass and allows the sunlight to light to the place and give it a spacious comfortable feeling. I was given a set menu that included some of their best dishes, and since I arrived there pretty early during the day, I was offered three refreshing drinks to quench my thirst. The first drink I tried was Rose Lady, which is lemonade prepared with rose water, a true thirst quencher. The second drink I had was the Green Lemonade, which consists of lemon juice with mint and mango, a dangerous combination, The last drink was Laban Nar, which is laban with dried mint and dried rose petals. Exquisite flavor! The first course consisted of salads, and the most memorable I think was the “Gol Anar Makhsoos”, a mix of rocca, watercress, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese and raw almond. The grape-based dressing gave it a new dimension. I also tried the “Shirazi” Gol Anar. Shirazi salads are known for their tinycubed vegetables, and this one was no different but with the great addition of pomegranate molasses. The third salad consisted of basil and a dressing of yogurt and pomegranate molasses.

Handy & Creative Gadgets Ventura SPARC MGS | www.ventura.ch Ventura SPARC MGS – a luxury time piece that we find its design and inner workings too revolutionary to give it a miss.–. So what’s makes the SPARC MGS so special apart from looking really fantastic? the magic lies in its selfwinding mechanism dubbed as the Micro Generator System (hence, MGS) that sits adjacent to the watch digital display which it readily powers. As you can see, this is no ordinary self-winding watch (or otherwise known as automatic movement). Instead of being powered by standard watch battery, the MGS is the source of power for the 12-digit LCD and its microprocessor – which by itself is an amazing feat.

The Leap | LeapMotion.com Remember how cool Tom Cruise was in “Minority Report” when he was manipulating computer data on a life-sized clear screen with his bare hands? Well, we may be approaching a similar plane of awesomeness once we adopt The Leap, which is itching to replace and outshine the good ol’ reliable but tired computer mouse. What exactly is The Leap? The Leap is a small iPod sized USB peripheral that creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet to precisely interact with and control software on your laptop or desktop computer. A close-up on the 2012 Audi R8 GT Audi unveiled the R8 GT in coupe and spyder open-top version form as the new flagship model of the R8 model line. Now the R8 GT version of the high-performance sports car is being launched, with production capped at 333 units. Each car sports a tag with its individual number on the gear lever knob. You can go ahead and consider the R8 lineup complete or at least symmetrical for now. With the addition of this lightened R8 GT, The Audi R8 GT delivers scintillating performance. In every situation, the engine impresses with its thrust and bite – and that unmistakable sound of an Audi ten-cylinder. The 5.2-liter V10 develops 560 hp and 540 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 317 km/h. Each unit of horsepower has to move only 2.93 kilograms. Thanks to the Audi ultra-lightweight technology of the Audi Space Frame and the use of innovative materials such as ultra-light magnesium and carbon fiberreinforced polymer (CFRP), the R8 GT weighs in at just 1,640 kilograms. That’s 85 kilograms less than its technical basis, the R8 5.2 FSI quattro. Incredibly, the body accounts for just 214 kilograms of the total weight.

Performance

The performance offered by the new top-of-the-line model in the R8 family is formidable. The 5.2-liter V10 with an aluminum crankcase draws its fuel from an FSI direct injection system. Dry-sump lubrication ensures a reliable supply of oil even under maximum lateral or straight-line acceleration. The Audi R8 GT comes with an automated six-speed R tronic transmission with two fully automatic modes. The driver can also shift gears using the paddles on the steering wheel or by flicking the joystick. Drive to the 19-inch wheels is transmitted via a rear wheel biased quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. Lightweight carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs decelerate the car with supreme ease.

Interior

Great attention to detail is evident in the materials and workmanship inside the car. The interior is black and can be adorned with stitching in a choice of titanium gray or crimson red for added refinement. Alcantara upholstery comes standard – on the sport steering wheel and windshield frame, too. Numerous details – including white dials and R8 GT logos – provide classy accents. The distinctive R8 “monoposto,” a large arch encircling the driver’s cockpit, is made of matt CFRP. The standard equipment includes LED head and tail lights, navigation system plus, and a driver information system with a built-in laptimer. Owners can also enjoy the sophisticated Bang & Olufsen sound system and a Bluetooth interface including seatbelt microphone. R8 GT specific options include bucket seats with a carbon-fiber composite chassis, matt CFRP applications and embroidered logos on the seat upholstery. The R8 GT in the showroom is KD. 60,000/-

Magical Facial Masks From Your Kitchen!

Sunny, hot, dusty, humid, all the horrible elements to wreak havoc on your skin. Say hello to Kuwaiti weather!

O

ur bodies are affected hugely by the weather. Seeing as Kuwait has very hot summers and cold dry winters, the influence on our skin can be quite negative causing damaged and dry skin. To prevent such problems and in order to have a fresh skin, I’ll give you some tips: • Feel the purity of nature and get the best of it. • Relax and enjoy your own homemade treatment. • Be calm and give the natural products time to do their job. • Remember that nature is there to help you, rely on it. • Continue using your homemade masks and use different kinds of products for better results. Never give up. • Try to stop spending your money on facials, dermatologists and harsh chemicals that damage your skin more than they heal it. Rely on nature.

There are different types of skins : dry, oily, sensitive, and combination skin. Each has to be treated differently. Pick one of the treatments below that matches your type of skin. For better results, all face masks should be applied for 10 to 15 minutes and then washed gently off your face.

Avocado and honey mask for dry skin:

Avocado and honey are particularly moisturizing. This mask is great for mature, wrinkled and dry skin. It’s best to use a ripe, fresh, organic avocado. Make sure to mash it up into a creamy pulp.

¼ cup honey

Apply to the skin for 10-15 minutes.

Preparation: Mash the avocado in a bowl, then stir in honey.

Wash off mask with a towel dipped in warm water.

Apply to skin and leave for 10 minutes. Clean face with a cool washcloth.

Egg whites and yogurt mask for all skin types.

Rose face mask for combination skin:

This mask, based on roses, is perfect for balancing out the oily and dry areas of your skin. Ingredients: Optional: 6 fresh rose petals 2 tbsps rosewater 1 tbsp natural yogurt, room temperature (not low-fat or non-fat) 1 tbsp runny honey (to get honey runny, you can heat the honey for couple of seconds.) Preparation: Soak rose petals, then crush them in a bowl. Add the rosewater, yogurt and honey.

Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid which is found in most over-the-counter acne medicines, according to Janice Cox, the author of “Natural Beauty at Home.” This is Cox’s recipe. The yogurt is great for soothing skin.

Leave on for 10 minutes.

Preparation: Mash together the strawberries and yogurt or sour cream. Spread on face and wash after 10-15 minutes. September 2012 76

½ cup oatmeal (any type of basic oatmeal) Preparation: Mix the ingredients together.

Mix well and apply to the skin.

1/4 cup sour cream or non-flavored yogurt

Strawberry mask for oily skin:

skin, mix in a couple tablespoons of honey.

How To Keep Your Makeup Last All Day It will be nice to have a perfect Make-up which lasts all day! But because of the heat, dusty, humid weather in Kuwait, it makes it kind of a difficult task. Normally, Girls apply their makeup in the morning, and then come home later that day to see the eyeshadow looks creased, smudged eyeliner under the bottom of eyelids, and foundation marks!! But if you want to avoid all that, and to have a makeup that can last longer, with a fresh perfect flawless skin, you should know the secret! There are several tricks you can apply when doing your makeup and to make it last for a long time, here are the tips:

1

Start Fresh and Clean Your Face: Always wash your face before applying makeup to rid your skin of oils and bacteria. Use a cleanser that fitted to your skin type, and when you wake up in the morning; use a toner to remove oil that has accumulated in your face while you sleep. This step can make your cosmetics go on easier, with better results

3

“Premier” is Your Key and it’s the Secret: A primer is the trick to have your makeup stays throughout the whole day. Before applying the foundation and by using a brush or a sponge apply the primer throughout your face to cover the fine lines, red areas, oily areas, and any spot that you want to cover. This will help your makeup to stay on.

4 2

Moisturizing: After washing and cleaning, use a moisturizer all over your face. Make sure to use the right moisturizer that matches your skin. For oily skin buy an oil free or gel moisturizer, and for dry skin buy a more nourishing one.

78

September 2012

Oil-Free Concealer: It’s important to use a concealer to cover any blemishes on your face, and especially to cover the dark circles under the eyes. It is better to use an oil-free product, because oil causes the concealer to look greasy in humidity and heat.

7

Waterproof Mascara: It is resistant to water, and comparing to regular mascara, this will stay on longer!

5

Powder To Set Everything in!: After applying your foundation it’s very important to use a large brush to lightly dust your face with pressed or loose powder to set your makeup and absorb excess oil. Apply a little powder all over your face and make sure to apply a little on eyelids

6

Eyeliner: Line your eyes with liquid eyeliner or gel eyeliners. Liquid liners are more likely to stay longer than pencil eyeliners.

8

9 Lip Color: Apply a foundation on your lips and then use a long lasting lipstick. But before applying it make sure to moisturize your lips properly.

Finally the Blusher: Choose a color that you think will look appropriate and won’t stand out too much. Apply it on your face, and now you’re ready to go!

Follow these steps, So you can be beautiful, stunning and fresh all day!

African fashion is all about colors. The daring combinations of vibrant colors and tribal patterns present in most African traditional costumes have long ago crossed the borders of the continent and inspired designers world-wide. But while African fabrics and hand-made accessories become increasingly popular around the world, Africa remains a continent of striking contrasts. In Africa you’ll find tribes that are very faithful to their traditional way of dressing, but also promising fashion designers ready to make a name in the haute couture industry. There is also a casual African style consisting of a mix of European cuts with African fabrics or vice versa.

Add colors to your perfect look, be more fun & enjoy life with the African necklaces that gives you a great feeling with the lovely crazy color mixing inspired by Africa theme of fashion

Horror Films

H

orror films, oh how we people crave them. There’s nothing like a good chillfest to keep awake in the night. It’s hard to point down what’s so appealing about the horror genre. It’s unpleasant to watch, it’s slow, most of the time it is of low quality. It can even be argued that it’s a form of masochism. Yet, we keep coming back to it over and over. People argue that it’s a dying genre, yet it continues to be one of the more profitable genres out there. (Even if the genre is plagued with sequels and remakes). The secret behind the love of the genre is quite simple, yet we don’t think about it much. It’s curiosity. Humans are curious by nature, but we train ourselves to contain that curiosity within, to keep out of strangers businesses. But this is the beauty behind storytelling, there’s nothing to hide. When we watch a movie or read a book, even if the meaning behind the story is vague and the story itself is filled with metaphors, we demand the right to know everything. And if little is explained, we decide to fill in the holes ourselves. And this is how the horror genre works. In a good horror movie, the villain, or the cause behind the main conflict, is mysterious. We don’t know what is exactly is going on. We know it’s bad, that’s the scary part, but we continue to watch it because of our own curiosity. We want to know what’s causing all of the commotion, yet we dread the inevitably frightening (or stupid) result. This is why we cover our faces yet we leave a hole open. This is why we scream at the characters not to continue searching, yet we secretly want them to do whatever we find stupid, because we need to know the result. Curiosity is a storytelling tool that can be used for other genres than horror. The mystery itself isn’t scary, but the answer is. Let’s use a simple example, spiders, why do people freak out when they see them? Even if you do not fear them, you cannot deny the fact that they look strange. They’re foreign to us. And that freaks us out. Yet still, we cant’ look away. No matter how scared the audience, they are fascinated by whatever is foreign. So we keep watching, no matter how gruesome the result. If the movie is successful at not scaring us, but disturbing us, keeps us thinking about it, makes us dread the moment when the killer comes, or the possessed child attacks etc.. Then it succeeded as a horror film. Too many movies get away with only using jump scares and label themselves as “horror”. It’s wrong, and these kinds of movies keep ruining genre. Screaming “BOO” to someone when he least expects it doesn’t make you scary, it makes you obnoxious. The horror genre is harder to tackle than most filmmakers think. A scary movie isn’t loud and contains as much blood into a scene as humanly possible. A scary movie exploits our curiosity, forces us to sit through something disturbing, yet making us want to see more. If it does that, than it succeeds as a horror movie.

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM SERIES II ARRIVES IN KUWAIT KUWAIT – The new Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II has officially arrived in

Kuwait after having been revealed for the first time in the country at Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive, the sole dealer for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Kuwait. The famous words of Sir Henry Royce-“Strive for perfection in everything you do”-have once more echoed through the hallways of the home of RollsRoyce in Goodwood, with the production of the Phantom Series II family, which projects a more informal presence with a greater emphasis on driving. The new car has been thoughtfully updated through introducing cuttingedge technologies and enhancements to an already peerless drive train. As a consequence, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom family Series II is a modern interpretation of the classic timeless Phantom design. The cars take the core values of Rolls-Royce and create a contemporary effortless luxury; achieving a new dynamism while remaining true to the brand heritage. Geoff Briscoe, Regional Director, Middle East, Africa and Latin America at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “The Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II embodies the 21st-century Rolls-Royce. More than 100 years of engineering and design excellence expressed in a modern enhanced style. The Phantom Series II design broadens the appeal of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, attracting individuals who appreciate its fusion of ultimate refinement, and cutting-edge technology.” Yousef Al Qatami, General Manager of Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive, said: “We are delighted and honoured to premiere the highly anticipated RollsRoyce Phantom Series II in Kuwait. This pinnacle of automotive excellence is attracting great interest and will without a doubt contribute to the continued success of Rolls-Royce in the country. As one of the best performing

Rolls-Royce dealers in the Middle East, Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive continually delivers excellence - from our unsurpassed vehicles, to the quality of service we provide our uncompromising clientele.”

New LED lighting:

The Phantom’s striking new front-end, with re-styled bumpers and rectangular light apertures, perhaps best encapsulates the essence of the significant changes that lie beneath. Rolls-Royce is the first to include full LED headlamps as standard on a production car. As well as delivering a characteristic whiter light, augmenting safety and preventing driver tiredness, these allow for the introduction of new technologies that better control lighting.

Effortless as standard

The Phantom Series II features new driver assistance technologies and a modern user interface with a re-designed multi-media controller, an 8.8 inch control centre display and a front, rear and top-view camera system that further augment ease of manoeuvring.

Waftability and sublime ride

The word waftability has long been part of the Rolls-Royce lexicon, with models past and present being renowned for their magnificent ride experience. Phantom Series II reinforces the company’s reputation for both. The new 8-speed automatic gearbox and rear differential enhance the already exemplary driving dynamics perfectly complementing the V12 direct injection engine. Fuel consumption improves by 10 per cent on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions fall from 388 to 347 g/km as a consequence. The Phantom Series II is a modern execution of tiwmeless Rolls-Royce elegance, which widens its appeal beyond the purely traditional but retains the core values that make the Rolls-Royce marque unique.

Remember that it takes acorns and a lot of time and patience to make a shady oak tree, and that seeds planted now may take a long time to come to fruition. Avoid making enemies over minor matters, even if you feel you are right. An interesting evening could develop from what seems to be a very boring affair. Guard your tongue when referring to a higher-up’s private life.

The variety in your social life may have reached the bedlam state and you should take time to sort things out and do away with the unnecessary dates on your calendar so that you can enjoy the truly important ones. Give a thought to spending time with an older person who cares deeply for you. Career improvement is possible now if you make the proper overtures to the proper person.

A major purchase you have been planning should perhaps be delayed for a short while until you get some definite information on a promised promotion or pay raise. Consider becoming involved in some community project which could utilize your talents and yield personal pleasure as well as make a definite contribution to the community.

Your ability to expend energy over and above your normal expected share is a rare gift — but you should be cautious of doing so much that you endanger your health. As the season begins to move more definitely into the cooler period, you should be careful of exposure and drafts. Expect an important letter in the mail which could alter your present lifestyle.

Use that recently acquired bit of “found” money in ways that will bring personal pleasure. Saving is a good habit — but you also need to indulge yourself once in a while, in order to keep the creative juices flowing. Don’t go off the deep end over a new love interest. That is not to say you should ignore chances for fun and frolic — just try to keep things on an even keel and don’t expect too much.

Family illness or an accident could mar your plans for a long-planned outing or vacation. Keep your money in your sock instead of throwing it away on projects which will not do much for your personal pleasure or your long-range improvement. An introduction to a striking companion could set the stage for a highly interesting relationship.

Be satisfied with getting the job done, even if the credit is claimed by people of little real ability. Wise observers will know who is responsible and arguments over a credit line could prove harmful. Financial matters should be handled promptly and advice should be sought from an older and more adept person if problems develope.

Be careful not to assume the worst about a close friend or lover, particularly if someone comes to you bearing tales. If the charge is serious, face up to it and ask for an explanation — but don’t convict before the defense has a chance to speak. Absolute honesty in a work situation is vital, as there are those who are observing you closely in relation to a possible promotion or job offer.

If at all possible, plan to get away for a few days in the near future so you can re-think some long-made plans for the future. A change in direction now might be difficult — and even painful — but not as much as it could be later. Give up on a romantic project that has been hanging fire. It could be reopened later to the advantage of everyone concerned.

A change of direction or profession is not impossible for you at this point. It is not advisable to throw away years of preparation on a lark — but remaining in a situation because it is easy is not the best move either. Seek advice from a person who has faced a similar situation. An old flame could make an amusing, yet attractive, proposition.

Your love life may be in for an exciting, if bumpy, period during which there could be some exhilarating highs — and a few deep depressions. If you hang on for the entire ride, however, you will probably be glad that you did. Career choices could be many at this time, but give full consideration to your present position before you grab for the brass ring. Ignore a threat from a jealous person.

Your business life could become inescapably involved with your private life, bringing a good deal of frustration and even unhappiness — unless you follow a strict rule about fraternization in the office. Keep your head down in any family arguments and avoid direct confrontations concerning your past. Gain an undying friendship by being discreet concerning a minor offense.
