Hajj, an annual conference on holy lands

By Bassam AlMusallam “Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley of no vegetation, by Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may perform the prayers. So make the hearts of some people incline towards them, and provide them with fruits, that they may be thankful.” (Holy Quran: Ibrahim; verse 37)

seven times around the cube-shaped building of Kaabah, which was built

Around 4,000 years ago, a mother carrying her little infant stood between two hills in the bleak heart of what is known today as the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia). Her eyes got narrower, as she raised her hand against the sunlight trying to find a sign of water well or an oasis in the isolated desert. The mirage of the burning sun surrounded her wherever she looked.

Hagar climbed while searching for water, and drinking from the same well

When her child started crying loud from immense thirst, she left him and ran back and forth between the two hills reaching the peak of each, in search for a crossing caravan that could provide a drink for her infant. It was after the seventh run between the two hills when a spring burst from the ground where the thirsty child’s heel lay. They both drank and survived.

The pilgrimage is then concluded by shaving the heads of male pilgrims, a

The mother, Hajer, the Arabic name for the Biblical “Hagar”, did not know that her suffering in the desert with her child, Ismael, or Ishmael, the first son of Ibrahim, Abraham, would still be remembered after thousands of years. Her footsteps between the two hills would be followed by millions of people from all race and gender as they perform the grand pilgrimage (Hajj) to the city of Makkah throughout history.

stead.

During the week of Hajj in a specific month in the Islamic lunar year, hundreds of thousands of people simultaneously converge on Makkah of Saudi Arabia in a universal Muslim gathering. The number of foreign pilgrims arriving for Hajj in Makkah from all over the globe grew from nearly 59,000 in 1920 to around 1.08 million in 1996, and exceeding 1.5 million in 2005. Hajj is one of Islam’s five pillars, a religious duty that every sane adult Muslim is expected to do once in their lives if they can afford it and are physically able. Pilgrims perform a series of rituals including walking counter-clockwise October 2012 12

by Abraham and Ishmael and acts as the Muslim direction of prayer. The rituals also include running back and forth between the two hills, which that burst under Ishmael’s heel, 4,000 years ago. Pilgrims also go to the plains of Mount of Mercy in Arafat east of Makkah to stand in vigil, and throw stones in a ritual Stoning of the Devil. ritual sacrifice of animal, and finally celebrating Eid Alad’ha of the Feast of the Sacrifice. The sacrifice of cow, lamp, camel, sheep or goat commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice Ishmael as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a sheep to sacrifice inAfter completing the rituals, pilgrims then start leaving Saudi Arabia heading home, feeling a true scene of brotherhood among each other and that everyone is equal in the eyes of God. The following verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad of Islam from God through his angel Gabriel: “We showed Abraham the location of the House: “Do not associate anything with Me; and purify My House for those who circle around, and those who stand to pray, and those who kneel and prostrate. And announce the pilgrimage to humanity. They will come to you on foot, and on every transport. They will come from every distant point.” (Holy Quran: The Pilgrimage; verses 26-27)

Where is happiness? On planet Mars or on planet Venus?

he greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not on our circumstances. We carry the seeds of the one or the other about with us in our minds wherever we go. ---Martha Washington Dear readers, I am so pleased to meet with you once again this month. October is the beginning of winter here in Kuwait and, for many, this amazing weather does wonders to the mood. Personally, I look forward to this time of year and eagerly await the rain which brings me much joy. As a life and business success coach, many seek my advice and expertise in the area of life as they strive to achieve their goals in hopes of reaching their happiness. In fact, as humans, we all want to go back to the point in the past that made us happy or move forward to a point in the future, where we achieve our desired goal, which takes us to that happy place. In actuality, our whole lives are spent seeking joy and happiness but many of us are unaware of the true nature of the goal we are striving to achieve. Let’s begin with the basics. A very important fact to understand is that men and women require very different things to make them happy. Sadly, due to the lack of awareness of biological differences between males and females, clashes and misunderstandings occur. As a coach, I truly believe that the first step in achieving happiness is an understanding of the reality of the situation. So, what does happiness mean to a Martian male vs. a Venusian female? As Martians, men primarily need to feel important and successful both at work and at home. In fact, Martians have a requirement to prove their place in all their surroundings, be it at work or within a group of friends. Additionally, he must feel that his Venusian, at home, thinks highly of him. He is happiest when he feels like he is number one and feels very unhappy at being ‘average’. From the moment he wakes in the morning to the end of his day, he is comparing himself October 2012 14

against other men in terms of achievement, intelligence, wealth, etc. For a Martian, the more successful he feels the happier he is. When Martians feel successful, their body chemistry changes. When he is happy and feels like he is number one, he has raised testosterone levels. Contrastingly, when he feels less than successful, he becomes stressed, and his cortisol levels increase while his testosterone levels decrease. As soon as there is a problem, the Martian will retreat into his cave to recharge and reduce his stress. Venusians, if you find your Martian in the cave, understand that it is not about you and give him his space until he comes out alone. When he does come out, remind him, in your own loving way, how special he is to you. Always provide your Martian with specific examples where you were impressed with his manly behavior. Remember, the comments you provide must be genuinely felt and true. When you remind him of his greatness at home, this will positively translate to the way he treats you and how he performs in the other areas of his life. Contrastingly, for Venusians, the causes of happiness are different than the Martians. The Venusian woman wants to feel connected with the people around her. She equates happiness with the strength of her connections, at home, with friends, and at work. She wants to be in touch and loved by all those around her. She hates being alone and lonely and wants to always be a part of something and included. If she has a problem in this area, like with her husband, her happiness levels severely drop which causes her oxytocin levels to drop as well. At this point she is in need of recharging which is done best thorough conversation, hugs, and bonding with friends, family, close loved ones, etc. Martians, if you find your Venusian to be unhappy, this could be a result of the increased emotional distance between you. Have you been distant from your Venusian and in the cave? Please understand that this affects your Venusian negatively and she severely misses you. Make an effort to make “quality” time with her. An excellent step is to actively listen to her, without providing any advice or solutions. By taking a step towards bonding with her, her happiness levels will be positively affected. Readers, I have provided you with a very brief framework of how to find your happiness. If you are Martian or Venusian, single or married, it is to your benefit to see the world from differing perspectives. You all deserve happiness, all the time, and I hope this framework will assist you in achieving this. I look forward to hearing from you and connecting with you with your questions, comments, and stories. All the best to you and be happy all the time!

More women empowerment?

I

n this issue we will be shedding light on a really interesting topic, which is social media marketing and how it empowers women. If you are putting up a strategy that aims to target female clients online, you will find some tips and interesting findings ahead.

Throughout history, women have strongly impacted buying habits — they control 85% of purchasing in the US and 88% in Middle East. Brands have tapped their influence by creating strategic marketing campaigns that relate personally to the female audience. Although a different beast, social media marketing continues to make headway by targeting a powerful subset of connected and engaged women, especially mom bloggers with big social followings and influence. A survey conducted by Women’s Marketing Inc. and SheSpeaks published new findings that shed light on social media marketing and women. We’ve pulled three important lessons from the data, which will help businesses to refine their marketing tactics, especially as they pertain to the female demographic.

In other words, humanize your brand to create a social media presence that women are willing to connect with — and share with friends. Almost three-quarters of women (72%) like to use social media to connect various parts of their lives. “Women use social media to integrate disparate roles – family, work and personal — online, says Kintzer. “They use it to connect with family, friends and brands.”

3. Different women, different outreach

Although you probably wish you could reach all women with one marketing strategy, the reality is that women of different ages and backgrounds access social media in various ways. In general, 46% of women first turn to their smartphones first thing in the morning; 31% access their computers. This data indicates that to reach the largest female audience possible, you should tailor a strong mobile campaign.

It makes sense, really, considering women are more present on social media than men. On Facebook alone, women are 55% more engaged than men. Similarly, 55% of women are more likely to purchase from brands they interact with on social media.

However, also think about the age group and demographic of women you’re targeting. These factors strongly influence the type of marketing content a woman encounters. Women under 40 are more likely to check their smartphones first thing, whereas women over 40 are more likely to check their computers and/or watch TV. Furthermore, full-time employed women more often turn to smartphones, but female homemakers rely on computers for their first doses of information.

So an advice for small business marketing strategies targeted to women. “First you have to know your customer and whom you want to reach,”.

“Consumption of traditional media, such as print and TV, goes up at night and on weekends,”

“Who is she and how does she buy? What media does she see and what channels does she shop in all day long? Once you know that, you know where to focus.”

“To reach women, know who she is and what media she consumes all day long. Plan an integrated campaign, because all the channels feed off each other. If a potential customer hears or sees your message in more than one context or venue, she will remember it, and it is far more effective.”

1. Women are more likely to purchase brands they follow

2. Women use social media to connect different aspects of their lives

Four out of 10 women feel that the primary benefit of social media is to connect with family and friends. But not far behind, 37% of women think the primary benefit is being alerted to coupons, promotions and deals by connecting with brands on social media.

Overall, 30% of women report they have become more social offline since participating in social media. That doesn’t mean they’re spending less time on social media. It certainly means, however, that the more often women interact with your brand online, the more likely they are to carry that experience into their everyday lives. As a business, never discount women’s roles as strong brand influencers. Just remember that they overwhelmingly prefer a personal component in their online activities. Develop a way to combine the two and you will have created a promising marketing strategy indeed. I hope this gave you insight on how powerful this tools to us, women!

This data demonstrates that women are primarily on social media to forge meaningful connections with their personal circles, but a similar set is also willing to interact with brands. As a small business, look to combine the two different kinds of outreach into a sincere and personal marketing strategy. October 2012 16

Transform spaces from small to spacious!

W

e live in an era where the concept of “small is beautiful” is applied in all totality. However, there are some areas where we presume that the concept does not serve well. For one I can hear the voice in unison saying: spaces!

Well, most of us associate vast areas to comfort, and it is believed that the more the space the more comfortable life is. This principle holds true when we plan to entertain or host parties for our ever evolving friend list. However the fact remains that in general we do not exploit the availability of space to its maximum. When we design and decorate a room we do not focus on things to come later, we only tend to do it for the present and this creates a conflict at a later stage. We generally accumulate furniture and fixtures that please our eyes, but have we thought of their functionality? These guidelines will help you utilize a given space to its fullness. • Overstuffed furnishing can overwhelm a small space, so be discerning while picking on your upholstered pieces. Choose ones that have compact frame, leggy pieces without any skirting at the bottom. • Selection of furniture is crucial to space utilization. Think of a sofa bed or a day bed with a solid back packed with loads of cushion for allday lounging support and the same is used as a bed at night. Pieces By Farah’s two puff seat is another example for a functional yet comfortable seater. Move the puffs apart to either make a single seater or two separate puffs. • Pack more utility to your strategically pickedout pieces of furniture. In order to save space without cramping up the area while entertaining, try outfitting it smaller, portable and functional pieces that can be shuffled around the space or can be totally moved to another room. Such a rearrangement will allow the room to open up to the traffic flow while hosting or entertaining. • A maxim to be followed religiously: light colors open up a room, while dark colors keep a space cozy. So to add the illusion of spaciousness, dip it in white. White surfaces bounce light around the room, keeping the space airy & light. • Too much colors in a room can be messy. It is ideal for small spaces to have a limited choice October 2012 18

of color. In order to add appeal to the room, dot it with a few colorful accent pieces, such as pillows or decorative accessories on the shelves. Similarly, excessive usage of patterns and texture can also cause confusion in a small space.

• In order to increase the apparent height of the room try applying vertical lines. A supposedly higher ceiling adds breathing space, especially if the walls are also painted a soft shade. Likewise to expand a small room, visually, wrap the walls with wide horizontal stripes. Use light colors to endorse a bright open scheme with similar tones so the stripes are noticeable but don’t visually break up the space. • Windows help in visual enlargement of a small space by facilitating your eye to move beyond the wall to the exterior view and blending in as one large space. Take advantage of this by either leaving the windows bare or by dressing it with draperies that match the color of the wall. • To create the illusions of depth in a small space dangle some large mirrors with decorative frames. Usage of mirrors can enhance the sense of space as they reflect the light and scene around the area. • Moving the bulky furnishing away from the wall creates a sense of movement and also makes the space feel bigger. The space thus generated between the wall & seating pieces gives the impression of depth and more room. It works even if your furniture is lean and spare or overstuffed and upholstered. • Adding round elements to a small, square room opens the visual and physical flow of the small space like a curved-back sofa, round coffee table, or circular ottoman. • To augment the sense of limitlessness, remove any barrier that stops the flow of the eye movement. One means is usage of unifying color & the other is usage of glass. • A single oversized art piece can create a compelling focal point that actually opens a small room while multiple pieces scattered around the room make the room feel chaotic and small.

It certainly was a price you’d not find on the racks at David’s Bridal either. Sparkle Events & Little Sparkle

Birthday parties, graduations, bridal showers, celebrations, bachelorette parties and even grand openings -- no matter what the event is, Sparkle Events will make it SPARKLE! Hessa Al-Assousi and Haya Al-Nafisi, the two amazing Kuwaiti ladies behind this project. I first stumbled upon them by accident; I was walking past a hall in one of the hotels in Kuwait and what I saw as I walked past the hall resembled the wonderful colors of Disney Land! I couldn’t resist, I went inside to see what was going on and it was like taking a trip back to your childhood! I asked about the event, and it was a birthday party. I asked who was organizing it, and that’s how I met Hessa who introduced herself with a cheerful smile. I couldn’t resist, I asked if I can visit them. Sparkle Events and Little Sparkles are sister companies, the first located in Dasman while the latter is located in Discovery Mall. I decided to visit the one in Discovery Mall, since it’s the one that specializes in organizing events for kids and what caught my attention about the business initially is a kids event. The moment I laid eyes on the store I felt as if I was transformed into a different place. The atmosphere is nothing short of spectacular! Sadly one of the partners was out of time when I went to do my visit, so I only met with Hessa and not Haya.

October 2012 26

Lana: When did you start? Hessa: We started three years ago. Haya and I are friends and we met in college. We used to arrange events for friends and family at first, and their encouragement pushed us to widen our circle. By word of mouth we started to get more people interested in our work, and then two years ago we participated in P2BK expo, where we won the first prize for marketing. We decided to make this more than a hobby, and thought that the first thing we need to make it official is to have an appropriate place to meet our clients. Lana: So it’s just this office? Hessa: It’s an office to meet clients, yes, and we also have a gift wrapping corner. Lana: What is the procedure you follow for taking in a client? Hessa: We have an initial meeting to get an idea about their requests. We take the full details about the event, including theme, preferred colors, etc. The idea is that the client tells us what they want, and we just make it happen. They can rest at home and stay assured that we will be taking care of everything. Lana: Is it the same when it’s a kid’s party? Do you meet up the parents or the kids? Hessa: We meet both and we ask the kids about the most things that they love to be sure that their party becomes a dream come true. Lana: Do you stay until the event ends? Hessa: No, I leave at the right time when I know that everything is taken care of. It’s always successful if you give the clear detailed instructions to the staff. I never run into problems with that regard. Lana: I knew you and Haya used to work and you decided to leave a secure job for a private business. How did you take this big step? Hessa: It took us two years to actually resign. It was a hard decision, really, but we had to take it because we wanted to be fully dedicated for our business. Lana: Was it the right decision? Hessa: Yes, it’s a decision we don’t regret. It doesn’t mean we didn’t work hard for it. It was tough, but we believe that hard work pays you back very well.

www.thecitymagazine.net 27

Lana: What did the private business teach you? Hessa: It changed my personality because I was more shy at first, but now that I’m fully responsible about events, I have to speak to my clients in a very assertive tone and I have to take charge of things. Lana: What keeps your business in the right track? Hessa: Research, details, creativity. Lots of creativity. Lana: How do you begin your work with a client? Hessa: We set up a meeting with the client, we go through their personality and see what the things they like, the colors, style and theme and then we go into the very small details. It’s several meetings until we come up with different ideas and show them to the client and decide. When it’s a kid’s birthday we meet the parent and the kid himself to know the characters and theme the kid prefers. Lana: Where do you get your items and costumes from? Hessa: We buy the materials from exhibitions that we see internationally. We have visited several exhibitions in Dubai, China and Hong Kong, and traveling of course gives us a lot of inspiration. Everything that is beautiful captures our attention, and we try to find what’s suitable for people here. Lana: Regarding your business, what do you think is misisng here in kuwait? Hessa: The most important thing that’s missing is here in Kuwait is the perfect venue. There aren’t many venues, really. Plus there is shortage in supplies in Kuwait, and the weather really doesn’t help for holding outdoors events, although we love holding events outdoors. Lana: How do you rate your work? Hessa: Most of our clients are happy with our work because most of our clients are regular clients, and we’re sure that they wouldn’t come back if our work wasn’t satisfactory to them. Lana: What was the first paid event that you have done? Hessa: The first paid event was a fashion show a local brand Lana: What’s the most beautiful even you made? Hessa: I love all the events I made, but most of all I love a party that we organized for a kid’s birthday who chose the circus as a theme. Lana: Have you done any events outside Kuwait? Hessa: Yes, a dinner party in Dubai

October 2012 28

Lana: What are your fears in this business? Hessa: My fear is for the preparations not to meet our expectations. Haya and I are very picky and meticulous. Lana: Do you only organize parties, or do you also sell supplies? Hessa: Currently we sell baskets that have supplies for kids birthdays at a very reasonable price. We also do giftwrapping. Lana: What about budgets, what’s the range for your client’s budget usually? Hessa: We cater our events around the needs of our clients, so our the budget really depends on what they want. Lana: Regarding your store in Discovery Mall, I see some staff dealing with kids. Did they have any training? Hessa: Yes, they were all teachers and staff in schools before. Lana: What do you advise a Kuwaiti entrepreneur who wants to do a private business but hasn>t taken the step yet? Hessa: Simply, do it! Lana: What are the things they should start with? Hessa: Will, commitment, plan, and creativity: don>t copy! Lana: Where do you think they can get experience for their work? Hessa: I think volunteering is a very good way to learn about a business. Volunteer in working for a company in the field you’re interested in. It will give you good experience. Lana: What do you wish for your business? Hessa: To be internationally recognized! Lana: We didn’t get a chance to meet your business partner Haya, but we’ll make sure she reads this interview. What would you like to tell her? Hessa: Haya, you’re the perfect business partner and I love working with you. Lana: What is your message to theCITY Magazine? Hessa: Thank you for the great support. I wish you great success and I hope that we both get international recognition.

Escape the boredom, get the party started!

W

e’re finally done with the first month of school and let us tell you, it was one long hectic month! Full of assignments and homework and things that we aren’t particularly fond of doing. To escape the mood of school and its nightmares, we often throw parties. There are numerous occasions to throw a party, and if you run out of reasons then just throw a party to break the mood! We love celebrations a lot. Being surrounded by people we love and sharing the joy is such a bliss! What is better than being surrounded by love and laughter from friends and family? Preparing for a party is a thrill on its own. We love sitting down together and brainstorming for a party’s theme, food menu, clothes, and invitation list. Getting our hair and make-up done, decorating the room with the right color of balloons and putting on our dresses to finally stroll into the room, all made-up and gorgeous, what a thrill! Then comes the final step, which is checking that everything is in place. The right music is ready to be played, the food is ready, a few bowls of popcorn are ready in case we decide to play a movie and the ice cream and treats are ready to be devoured by our fantastic guests. Cupcakes of course are a staple in every single one of our parties. The most amazing feeling in the world is when you see your guests enjoying themselves at the party and when they leave your place with big smiles on their faces! Writing this article alone made us want to throw a party, so we’re going to get down to business now and hope to see you next month. Have a wonderful day! www.thecitymagazine.net 31

HAPPY EARLY

HALLOWEEN YOU GUYS!

J

ust a few weeks left for Halloween. Are you excited yet or not? Got your costume ready? Your party clothes? What about the decoration, is that all ready yet? Well, if you haven’t started yet, we can start now with these simple guidelines for a perfect party. Prepare the room you want to party in, and make sure you stop by Party Land. Yes, Party Land is the best destination in October, they turn the place into a haunted mansion and that’s what we’re aiming for. They also sell party games, but the most important part is decoration. The first and most important thing you need to do is to dress up your party place. Dress up your house in the spirit of the season with the simple yet best decoration you can make. Transform your living room into a decrepit dwelling by hanging ragged-looking spiderwebs made by pinning, snipping, and tearing white cloth and hanging them around the house, or make it a blood bath by doing the same thing but throw red food coloring making them bloody. Turn the place into a Dracula parlor: use Skulls, women clothes, vintage wedding gowns that have been torn and tossed in red food coloring, and add a lot of candle sticks around the place without using lights. Or how about putting ghosted faces? Balloons may seem friendly at first, but in the darkness their scary side comes out. To summon a ghost, snap one or two green eight-hour light sticks so they glow, and insert them into a white balloon. Inflate the balloon and tie it closed. Use a black marker to draw a wide-eyed visage. Repeat to make more, then affix ghosts to a wall with transparent tape and lower the lights for the green, scary, ghost faced effect. I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of insects, right? How about decorating the walls with Insects? They’re really cheap and can be found in Souq Al Mubarkiya for less than 1KD. Decorate walls with fake insects that crawl thanks to a creatively tied fishing line or transparent tape which is an extremely great tip to decorate your walls if you have nothing on them. Or turn any room into a haunted one by covering the furniture with old sheets, or place rotten eggs around the October 2012 32

house and in bowls as a centerpiece. How to make them? Grab some eggs, pierce the eggs and get out everything in the egg and place the eggs in a strong tea bowl. Put three tea bags then add vinger and mix them, simply then add the eggs and cover them up, see how much of the shade you want them to be in or let them rest overnight. After finishing, empty the tea mix out of the eggs and place them in a bowl or around the house and you’ll have easy rotten eggs. What about fake potions? Filling them with CREEPY items like hearts, eyes or even hair can be quite scary and fun! Fill old-style jars with water or ANY empty jar in your mind, and add enough food coloring to produce a suitably supernatural tint. Arrange lotus pods, poppy pods, and coneflower heads within or even fake eyes, hair, insects and a lot of disgusting thing that you can add. No evil will darken your doorstep with these eerie elixirs on display. Of course you have to have a tray for your guests for a drink right? Soda and juice, the usual drinks, right? How about adding helping head? YES a head stuck on your tray! Take a head of a mannequin and just stick it on your tray using a bandage cloth. Dip it with several paper towels in a brewed coffee and leave them to dry up, when they’re a little dried just stick them on the head and cover the whole tray with it, and you’ll get that scary looking head serving you the drink. But as for the games ? You Need Uniqueness In Your Games, Right? Not just spin around the musical chairs or sea and land games, how about trying these out? Tie a delicious doughnut on a string and you have a popular game that is appropriate for all ages, or maybe even Halloween games of disguise survive in many old sources, and they don’t necessarily involve elaborate costumes. Turn to one of the ickiest and coolest of all Halloween storytelling pranks: making your friends feel around in a dead man’s “guts.” Fill a darkened room with blindfolded guests, then take off on Charles F. Smith’s circa-1930s “A Hallowe’en Post Mortem,” which he wrote for the Boy Scouts: “The truth it is, and not a myth/That once there lived a man named Smith,/And it became

his mournful lot/To murdered be quite near this spot/ We now will pass out his remains,/You first will handle poor Smith’s brains....” At this point, “moist sponges are passed from guest to guest.” The verse continues, disassembling poor Smith bit by bit -- his hair (corn silk), his windpipe (a length of uncut boiled macaroni), his hand (a glove stuffed with wet sand) -- until little of him is left to distribute. Bobbing for apples is one of the classic and hardest games in parties, the game’s bobbing, splashing, and general hilarity provide plenty of entertainment simply add apples in a large bowl and add water then guests attempt to bite the apples and pull them out in a certain time, if they don’t get more than they’re opponent they lose. As for the food, unique dishes are always needed how about being a pro at doing them? Prepare any chocolate cupcake recipe. Using a medium round tip, pipe a mound of meringue buttercream in the center of each cupcake, then outline and pipe a brain design over it, simple as that. Use Jelly to create an eerie glowing treat in a mug for your guests adding a jelly snake coming from it.. That looks like a really weird and icky food but it’s actually jelly! Or color your french fries by adding red food coloring, green and blue to the oil before frying them with a colored dipping sauce created from mayo and ketchup, or just mayo with a color for a freaky look. That’s some of the basic and simple tips for a Halloween party. Have a good time! www.thecitymagazine.net 33

Most Amazing Houses in the World Bart Prince House Albuquerque, New Mexico Architect Bart Prince is renowned for his incredibly creative approach to designing structures. The homes he has created look nothing like the boxy houses you and I live in; they’re quirky, they’re organic, and they’re most definitely one-of-a-kind. Prince says his designs start from the inside out, and that every home he builds has an idea behind it.

Toilet-Shaped House – Suweon, South Korea

The world’s one and only toilet-shaped house was built to mark the launch of the World Toilet Association, a campaign for more sanitary restrooms worldwide. Sim Jae-Duck, nicknamed “Mayor Toilet”, had the 4,508-square-foot concrete and glass structure built in his native city of Suweon, South Korea. At the center of the home is a glass-walled “showcase loo” that produces mist to make users feel more secure. Sim, who was born into a toilet and has made clean restrooms his life’s work, now lives in the home. October 2012 44

Bubble House – Tourettes-sur-Loup, France

The ‘bubble house’ of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, France, is only 35 years old and has yet to be finished, but that hasn’t stopped the French ministry of culture from listing it as a historic monument. Designed in the 70s by Hungarian architect Antti Lovag for fashion designer Pierre Cardin, the bubble house is futuristic yet organic, with lots of built-in furniture and oval, convex windows. The design is meant to take optimal advantage of the volcanic Côte d’Azur landscape, and its windows certainly provide a beautiful view of the Mediterranean.

The Upside-Down House – Szymbark, Poland

Dar al Hajar – Yemen

This striking rock palace is not a hotel or a museum. It’s not even a primary residence. Dar al Hajar was built as a ‘summer home’ by Imam Yahya in the 1930s, and it’s a stunning example of rock-cut architecture. Standing at the base of this imposing structure, you have to crane your neck to see the top. The palace has since been restored so that visitors can buy a ticket and get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Polish businessman and philanthropist Daniel Czapiewski built The Upside Down House as a statement about the Communist era and the end of the world. It took 114 days to build because the workers were so disoriented by the angles of the walls. It certainly attracts its fair share of tourists to the tiny village of Szymbark, who often become dizzy and ‘seasick’ after just a few moments inside.

Wooden Skyscraper – Arkhangelsk, Russia

Inversion House – Houston, Texas

When two old studio buildings owned by The Art League in Houston were set to be demolished, they decided to take the opportunity to turn them into a temporary art installation. Artists Dan Havel and Dean Ruck sculpturally altered the two buildings, peeling off the exterior siding of the front building to simulate the appearance of a funnel-like vortex. The opening was actually a tiny hallway (only kids could fit through it) that passed through the two structures and emptied out into an adjacent courtyard.

Nikolai Sutyagin, a former gangster, began building this ‘wooden skyscraper’ in Arkhangelsk, Russia with the intention of it being only a two-story building. But, a trip to see wooden houses in Japan and Norway convinced him that he hadn’t used roof space efficiently enough, so he kept building. “First I added three floors but then the house looked ungainly, like a mushroom,” he said. “So I added another and it still didn’t look right so I kept going. What you see today is a happy accident.” The multimillionaire became a pauper after his possessions were destroyed during a stint in prison, and the house is now decaying around him, but he still lives in the bottom floor with his wife. www.thecitymagazine.net 45

Must-Try Grooming Experiences

Turkish bath

Finnish sauna

Hot stone massage

Dead Sea bath

Also known as a Hamam, the Turkish bath involves moving through a series of rooms in a bathhouse in order to cleanse the body and achieve complete relaxation. Typically, your experience will begin with a sweat session in what is known as a warm room -- or tepidarium -- followed by steaming in an even hotter room, the caldarium, where you’ll receive a massage and full body scrub. Finally, you’ll round out your visit with a trip to the cooling room to rest.

The origins of the hot stone massage can be traced back to Chinese, Native American and Hawaiian cultures, but the procedure has become so popular that it’s now a regular feature on spa menus across the world. The concept is simple but ingenious: Smooth, flat rocks with good heat-retention properties are warmed up in hot water to approximately 125° F. They are then placed at specific points on the body in order to encourage the muscles to relax and therefore enable the massage therapist to apply deeper pressure to your body, meaning you’ll look and feel even more refreshed than you would after a regular massage. Saunas are an integral part of Finnish culture. In fact, so much so that nearly every household has one. If you’re not bound for a holiday in Helsinki anytime soon, you can recreate the Finnish experience at a sauna near you. Begin by hunting down one that has access to a body of cool water and where you can wear as little as possible or preferably be nude. Once you’re in the sauna, keep any conversations light and aim for two to three cycles of steaming in the sauna followed by cooling down. The benefits of such a procedure include detoxification, improved skin texture and shinier hair.

Considered one of the first health resorts in the world and frequented by such historical figures as Herod the Great and King David, a dip in the Dead Sea is an experience that more than justifies boarding a plane to get there. The mineral content of the sea itself in combination with properties of the surrounding area, such as a low concentration of atmospheric allergens, reduced ultraviolet radiation and high atmospheric pressure, all help to create a climate that is helpful for relieving a wide variety of skin conditions. Aim for two swims of about 20 minutes each for a few days to reap the sea’s full therapeutic benefits

Tahitian black-pearl massage

Moroccan oil massage

Ancient cultures believed that pearls had healing properties. Though modern scientific evidence to back up this claim is lacking, Tahitians haven’t stopped crushing up precious black pearls and blending them with oils to create a unique paste for massage purposes. This concoction is essentially a threein-one treatment, as the pearls work as an exfoliant, the oils hydrate the skin and the masseuse’s skilled hands help unwind sore muscles. So, while all your ailments may not miraculously vanish in 60 minutes, you’re guaranteed to leave the spa in better shape than when you arrived.

From massage to body scrubs and even clay masks, argan oil makes up an essential component of nearly every treatment in Moroccan spas. This wonder substance contains high levels of both Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, making it an excellent moisturizer that will render even the most scaly skin soft and supple.

Thai fish pedicure

German chalk cleanse

Foot fetishists and adventure-seeking groomers will want to head to Thailand to try out a fish pedicure, a recent and unusual grooming trend for both men and women. This procedure has you sink your feet into a warm pool filled with Turkish Garra rufa fish who go crazy for the dead skin on the bottom of your feet. The sensation has been described as ranging from being tickled to mildly shocked, but, either way, you’ll emerge with feet as smooth as a baby’s. Top off your experience with a foot steaming and a legendary Thai foot massage.

In addition to breathtaking views, sandy white beaches and succulent seafood, the main reason tourists flock to the German island of Ruegen is to be amazed by its chalk cliffs and benefit from their therapeutic properties. Try Binz, the island’s largest resort and a favorite among international spa-goers. Look for skin cleanses containing the famous chalk that will draw out impurities in your skin or enquire about chalk treatments for body pains after a day of hiking. www.thecitymagazine.net 47

Dr. Mahmoud Al Sayed OBs Gyne Specialist AlOmoomah Hospital

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world. It is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races. Around 15000 cancer cases have been recorded in Kuwait over the last 10 years. The incidence of breast cancer varies greatly around the world and it depends upon the availability of screening programs and prevalence of known risk factors. There is an increase in the number of breast cancer cases, but decrease in death in countries where early detection is done by screening.

What are risk factors relating to breast cancer?

It is important to understand the risk factors to reduce the incidence of breast cancer. Some of these may be avoidable while others may not be. Risk factors that cannot be modified mainly include advancing age, genetic mutation, family history, age at the first menstrual cycle. Risk factors which can be modified include diet, body weight, being physically active, breast feeding, age of the first pregnancy, smoking, estrogen use, alcohol intake and hormone replacement therapy. Early age at menarche and late age at first pregnancy are age related risk factors. Family history of breast cancer in the first degree relatives from mother’s and father’s family increases risk of breast cancer.

Can you prevent breast cancer? Yes, to a certain extent.

Women, who are genetically at high risk for development of breast cancer should begin screening early and some can prevent cancer by medications such as Tamoxifen or prophylactic mastectomy can be done. In women who have the BRCA, mutation, removal of the ovaries has also shown to reduce risk of breast cancer. Also risk can be reduced by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and having children and having first pregnancy in twenties, breast feeding and limiting use of hormonal replacement therapy.

Prof. Peter Corridon peter@thecitymagazine.net

The Spectrum of Eating Disorders and A Young Kuwaiti’s Vision for Improved Awareness and Treatment Peter: When did you first realize that you had a problem?

Riham: I realized this at the age of 10 years old. Riham, who will be soon celebrating her 30th birthday, was previously convinced that she would not live beyond her twenties. Her ordeal with this complex disorder began at the tender age of 10. She recounts that her battle with anorexia nervosa is rooted in a complex foundation that included her genetic predisposition for anxiety, confusion with cultural adaptations and notions of physical identity, and a self-driven fixation for perfection.

Peter: What do you think caused this disorder?

I

n past articles we have focused on eating disorders in various settings, but primarily from the perspective of excessive food intake. However, it is important to identify the fact that all eating disorders refer to abnormal eating habits that revolve around both excessive and insufficient food intake.

Thus, it is essential to consider an issue that is close to the heart, and is presented by a native of this soil - Riham Al Reshaid. Pardon the clichĂŠ, but Riham is your classic example of a time-honored Kuwaiti woman, who stems from a traditional Kuwaiti family. However, one main distinction is that she has suffered with the debilitating eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, for the past 19 years.

Riham: My battle with anorexia nervosa is rooted in a complex foundation that included a genetic predisposition for anxiety, confusion with cultural adaptations and notions of physical identity, and a self-driven fixation on perfection. As the daughter of a diplomat, Riham continuously attempted to adapt to the highly disparate norms of eastern and western hemisphere cultures, as her family was often transitioned between Kuwait and the United States. This continuous relocation process proved to be quite stressful for the then young child. In an attempt to cope with such stress, she resorted to a regimen that provided her with a strict set of rules for life not knowing at that time, she was ironically developing an uncontrollable fear of foods, and eating altogether as she battled between stages of over and under eating.

Peter: What was the critical point?

Riham: At the age of 21, I realized that I could not even consume nutrients when I drastically needed them without having to purge them. My safe foods, salad and water, were no longer safe for me to consume. I was no longer in control! During this period, and throughout her teen years, Riham suffered from having low self-esteem. Many factors contributed to this issue, but she primarily recalls a major initial contributor was the battle to control her weight. With the epidemic proportions of adult and childhood obesity cases, which are still plaguing Kuwaiti and American states, one can easily envision that a child who was interwoven between both societies could fall victim to an eating disorder. In Riham case, this was exactly the result. By the age of 17 she weighed a startling 91 kg. This led her to develop a compulsion to regulate her food intake in an effort to rapidly loose weight. Unfortunately, this fixation spiraled out of control as her body weight significantly fluctuated between obesity and malnutrition. Then at the age of 18, she reached a crucial juncture in her life. She had always excelled academically and desperately desired to attend university in the United States. When the time finally came for her to depart, her plan was

October 2012 50

halted by the tragic events of 9-11. This change left Riham filled with feelings of inadequacy, as she could not achieve her long desired goal to study abroad. Not being able to follow her dreams, she felt as though she had lost the ability to plan and dictate important events in her life. Thus, she decided to take control of the one ting that she believed that she had full autonomy over, her body, and began starving herself. She starved herself for weeks at a time, while withdrawing from the public as that usually presented her with events that involved eating and unwanted views from others on her appearance. Within the two years that followed, Riham lost more than half her body weight, developed significant cardiovascular problems and was frequently admitted to and discharged from hospitals. Paradoxically, she did not relinquish efforts to control her physical appearance, and actually desired more than ever to amplify her weight loss. This fixation totally consumed her life. There was little time or interest for anything else, and at the age of 21, she realized that she could no longer consume nutrients when needed. Whatever she ate or drank needed to purge from her body, even her safe foods (salads and water). This made her realize that she had drifted from a state of total control to state that left her completely helpless. This loss of control coupled with the turmoil her family was then facing made her realize that she drastically needed help if survival was an option.

Peter: What changed it all? What breathed life back into you?

Riham beyond her thirties? Riham: Not only do I have the will to live again, but also I realize how critical these groups of people are in helping someone like myself who has battled with an eating disorder. Thus, I hope to raise awareness for eating disorder sufferers across the Gulf States by developing support groups and center. Riham recognized that getting to the point where she wanted and needed to get better was a powerful turning point in her life. Furthermore, she could not have come to this realization without the undying support from her family, the medical treatment from an in-patient facility, and the invaluable help from peer counseling groups. These individuals empowered Riham, who is now (re)learning proper eating habits and techniques to cope with the underlying issues that surrounded her disorder. In sum, it is important to recognize the value of family support, and not underestimate the value of peer support in helping an individual acquire habits that are beneficial for life and the fact that these disorders require a complete team to truly aid the sufferer, as the sufferer can never do it alone. Dear readers, Riham has started awareness complain using social media so if you need assistance or wish to share your story with Riham and other victims of these debilitating disorders, visit her page: https://www.facebook. com/groups/kuwaitedap

Riham: The support I received from my family, and my peer group and treatment team at the Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center. Specifically, living in a house with 4-hour treatment and 35 other women that struggled with the same issues turned out to be a powerful thing – if people get together and talk about this issues and support each other – it is so helpful. There’s a great understanding between sufferers of the issue. There is an innate understanding amongst us! After realizing the pain that her family was going through, she began to make every, yet painful, effort to maintain a healthy weight level. This method provided temporary improvements, but did address the underlying issues. Nevertheless, this process continued for the next 8 years, until she could not longer suppress the underlying emotional trauma, and Riham lost the will to continue this regimen and again fell deep into a state of depression. Riham relates that she reached a level where she realized that she could not longer combat this sickness using her then method, but found solace in the fact that even if this disorder was going to be the end her, she would actually be able to still achieve her ultimate goal of being thin.

Peter: Can you tell us something that individuals that do not suffering with this disorder take for granted?

Riham: People take it for granted when do they know that they are full, or hungry, or having a normal meal plan. This sobering insight provided her therapists and family with the clear realization that they could not provide the level of care that was necessary to combat this issue. They acted swiftly, and recommended that Riham seek critical care. Taking this advice Riham checked into a treatment facility outside Chicago, called the Timber Knolls Residential Treatment Center July of this year. For 3 months she received round-the-clock support from a treatment team that included a dietician, therapist and psychiatrist. The specialize support that she obtained made it clear that out-patient therapy was insufficient to combat the effects that individuals face with clinical depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders, and more importantly that is was possible to overcome the debilitating habits that she had mastered across the past 19 years.

Peter: With a new lease on life generated by the help from your family, support groups and treatment teams, what’s do you think awaits www.thecitymagazine.net 51

Altro in Italian is ‘another’, and Altro Level indeed offers food from a totally different level! The restaurant consists of two floors and the first floor itself is divided into two parts, connected by a hanging bride. I’ll spare you the details about the fantastic decor that transforms you to a restaurant in an Italian neighborhood, and I’ll get straight to business. The lovely staff prepared a special menu for this column. We started with the drinks, four fruit cocktails with fizzy soda and real fruits. My favorite was the watermelon mojito, very refreshing! The mushroom soup is exceptional, like nothing I’ve tasted before and the salads were absolutely yummy. I loved the cheese salad which comes with halloumi cheese and grilled veggies. The warm asparagus salad is another story, the dressing on that salad is just phenomenal! The hot appetizers included steak fingers, which are thin pastries filled with steak filets that are marinated and potatoes. The mozzarella crumb is another delicious appetizer which comes with an avocado and tomato dip. Pizza at Altro Level has a lovely thin crust, a rich tomato sauce blanketed with lovely cheese, just amazing. The pepperoni was delicious but I loved the vegetarian pizza. The pink risotto I ate there is absolutely gorgeous to the eyes and is flavored delicately with the beets that it’s cooked with, which lend it the beautiful color. Main course included deliciously marinated steak which comes with mashed potato that’s both creamy and crunchy at the same time. They also serve chicken breast that is stuffed with cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. The burgers served are a perfect marriage between a juicy patty and a rich bun, something unforgettable that I highly recommend to all my burger lover friends. For dessert I tried three things, the delicious panna cotta which is flavored and decorated with pistachios, and the chocolate molten which is rich and just heavenly. The apple pie was also delicious, sweet and with a crispy crust. I would like to thank the amazing staff for their great cheerful attitude, and the owners Abdulwahab Al-Refaie and Saud AlNughaimishi for their kind invitation. I enjoyed this experience with dear friend Budoor AlShakhs. We’ll think of another place to visit soon and we’ll see you again next month. October 2012 54

Canapés are perfect for parties and gatherings. With their decorative presentation, the bite-sized foods make wonderful finger foods any hostess will be proud to serve. What Is a Canapé? Although sometimes people use the words interchangeably, canapés can be used as appetizers, but not all appetizers are canapés. Canapés are defined as finger foods that consist of crackers, pastry, or thin slices of bread that have been cut into geometric shapes (rounds, diamonds, triangles, etc.), with some type of tasty topping. For a fancy affair, one might serve golden, buttery pieces of toast that are spread with duck liver pâté, piled high with lobster salad, or topped with sour cream, cucumber, and caviar. In a more casual setting, the toppings might consist of a blend of cream cheese and Spanish olives, slices of ham and cheddar, or egg salad. There’s really no end to the canapés you can create. Because they are easy to pick up and eat neatly, canapés are often served at parties where people are circulating around a room rather than sitting at a table. Thus, they make popular items at events like wedding receptions, art gallery openings, and cocktail parties. However, because of their small size and because they are eaten with the fingers, canapé recipes are also an excellent choice for children’s parties. Building the Perfect Canapé Canapés can be hot or cold. Even without a recipe, you can build a great canapé following a few simple steps. Step One - Choose Your Base Tightly crumbed breads like rye or black bread make the perfect base for canapés, because they will hold up well under the pressure of ingredients. You can toast the bread for further structure. Many grocery stores sell crunchy, pre-toasted bread rounds that make the perfect base for a canapé. Crackers work well, too. If you are using bread, cut it into the size and shape you want, keeping in mind that a canapé should be no more than two bites. Step Two - Add Flavor Jazz up your canapé before you top it by spreading on a flavored compound butter. Compound butters are simple to make. Mix finely minced herbs, garlic, cheeses or other ingredients into softened, unsalted butter and allow to sit overnight to allow flavors to blend. Spread a thin layer over your base. You can also brush your bread with melted garlic butter and toast it in the oven. Italian Bruschetta Recipe The original recipe for bruschetta is as simple as you could imagine. Olive growers would take a loaf of bread with them when they brought their olives to the mill to have the oil pressed out. They would toast a bit of the bread and dip it into the freshly pressed olive oil to test the quality of the oil. As time passed, bruschetta developed into an actual recipe where the bread was toasted, rubbed with garlic and then drizzled with olive oil and topped with diced onions. Now when people think of bruschetta they think of toasted crusty bread topped with a diced tomato mixture. The olive oil is no longer drizzled onto the bread but mixed into the topping with the garlic. This Italian bruschetta recipe is slightly sweet, slightly salty, and completely delicious. To cut the basil in a chiffonade, simply take a few leaves of basil and roll them into a cigar shape and then just slice into thin ribbons. Ingredients • 1 loaf crusty baguette, 8 medium tomatoes, diced • ½ red onion, diced, 3 garlic cloves, minced • ¼ cup of fresh basil, chiffonade • ½ cup balsamic vinegar, ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste, Honey to taste Instructions • Slice the baguette into inch thick slices. Slice on the bias. • Mix the tomatoes, onion, garlic, and basil together in a bowl. • Add the balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil. • Taste and add salt and pepper. • Add honey to taste. • Cover and let rest in the refrigerator for at least one hour. • Before serving toast the bread slices, serve the chilled topping on the warm bread. www.thecitymagazine.net 59

Alfa Romeo 8C

The Alfa Romeo 8C name was used on road, race and sports cars of the 1930s. The 8C originally referred to a straight 8-cylinder engine. The Vittorio Jano designed 8C was Alfa Romeo’s primary racing engine from its introduction in 1931 to its retirement in 1939. In addition to the two-seater sports cars it was used in the world’s first genuine single-seat Grand Prix racing car, the Monoposto ‘Tipo B’ - P3 from 1932 onwards. In its later development it powered such vehicles as the twin-engined 1935 6.3-litre Bimotore, the 1935 3.8-litre Monoposto 8C 35 Type C, and the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Mille Miglia Roadster. It also powered top-of-the-range coach-built production models. In 2004 Alfa Romeo revived the 8C name for a V8-engined concept car which has made it into production for 2007, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. The V8 roars into life at a push of the starter button, revving angrily and noisily like a thoroughbred racer. Stab the throttle and the 470Nm of torque has no trouble launching the 1,400kg car away from the line. Alfa says it’ll do 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 190mph – and from the driver’s seat, it certainly feels savagely fast.

October 2012 64

The 8C has been dismissed by some as simply a rebodied Maserati, but it turns out to be rather more than that. There are elements from the Maserati Coupé in the structure, and the suspension is lifted from the GranTurismo, but everything above the waistline and all the outer body panels are carbon fiber. The result is a low, stiff structure and a claimed weight of 3500 pounds, hundreds lighter than any other Maserati. Suspension elements are taken from the GranTurismo, and the engine is a wet-sump development of Maserati’s Ferrari-built V-8, enlarged to 4.7 liters and making 444 horsepower. The transmission is a rear-mounted, six-speed automated manual with paddle controls behind the steering wheel. This model was one of the last 8C prototypes, and was fitted with a semi-automatic version, which allow the driver to change gear via the steering wheel-mounted paddles., our drive was brief, but it’s obvious that the 8C is a true Italian sports car. Now available in Kuwait at Al Mulla & Behbehani Motor Company, the exciting Alfa Romeo MiTo was the first car produced by the legendary Italian brand after the stunning 8C Competizione - Alfa Romeo’s icon of style and technology - from which it borrows a number of characteristic design cues - the uniquely shaped side windows that are delineated by flush glazing, a three-part “trilobo” motif that distinguishes the front bumpers, the shape of the headlights and the LED tail-lights.w

Guide to Wedding Dresses

S

- Mermaid dresses add curves to the silhouette of your body and add the illusion of curves to your waist.

With all the styles and the cuts to choose from, it can be almost overwhelming for the bride to be able to come up with the right decision.

waist and shoulder widths of similar width, but set off by slim, toned arms and legs. - Choosing a dress that defines an apple’s waist is a must. A bodice worn with an A-line skirt - slim at the waist and flared at the bottom

o the question has been popped, the engagement announced and the wedding preparation is now on! For brides, although all the aspects of the wedding concern her, nothing is as important as finding the wedding dress for the most important day in her life. This is going to take a lot of time and thought in the coming months.

What gown is right for me? Gowns, like brides, come in all shapes and sizes. Deciding on the style of gown is easier when you know what flatters your figure. Wearing the right cut for your body type is essential in highlighting your best features. There are basically three things which a bride needs to consider in choosing the right dress for her. Her body type, What cuts are the most flattering, The little details to make it truly unique

The body types: The Banana - The banana has no curves to hide. This type of figure is the

shape du jour and sported by super-thin supermodels like Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz. Legs and tummy are the banana’s best friends. Women with this shape should accentuate their long legs as they are always very thin. Slim legs automatically look longer giving the illusion of height. As with the shoulderspectacular pears, the boyish shape should accentuate their slender shoulders and slim arms by wearing little on top. October 2012 68

The Apple- This fruity label refers to a slightly rounded figure with hips,

The Pear – The most common body shape of women and also the hardest to dress. Large, voluptuous lower body with large hips and a pert posterior, the pear is shapely on the bottom with a noticeably smaller top half with small shoulders and a small bust. Pears are also blessed with a beautifully slim torso and small waist, something many other shapes lack. - Dress in princess style dresses which disguise fuller hips and put the focus on your better half, balancing your torso and bust. The Hourglass – Characterised by hips and shoulders of the same width and a well-defined waist, this body shape is synonymous with the classic Hollywood hot bod. - Hourglasses may have a host of physical assets to highlight but remember, less is more. Women with hourglass figures have many different parts of their body worthy of flaunting but they should not be tempted to go overboard and highlight them all at the same time

Get the Retro Look Retro makeup is all about the red lipstick, cat-eyes and a thick eyebrow! It is always my favorite and my first choice for any occasion. Retro makeup is quick, glamorous and chic! The look requires accuracy and different products, so here I will tell you exactly what I use and how I create the retro look with my favorite makeup products:

1

After I moisturize my face and put the primer I use the full cover HD foundation from MakeupForever. I am using this foundation for months now, it covers the face perfectly. It is an oil-free medium-to-full coverage liquid foundation which covers skin imperfections and it leaves the skin soft and radiant.

3

2

Prime your eyes with Krayolan eyeshadow base. The best thing you can do to make your makeup last long is to give it a good foundation

4

October 2012 70

Now do the eyebrows! Thick eyebrows are very much “in” this season. Try to use dark colors but not too dark or black, use a suitable color that matches your skin tone. My favorite eyebrow pencil is from Mac, and remember the shape of your face determine the shape of your eyebrow.

Eyeshadow: I prefer a matte shade for this makeup look, but you can go with a shimmer or pearl tone. I usually use bronze colors and my favorite is the UrbanDecay Naked2,1 Also, Chanel›s new eyeshadow collections are amazing!

6 5

The Cat Eye: And now, it’s time for the liquid liner. I prefer to use a waterproof gel liner and my own brush, because it’s more exact, thick, and less messy. «MAC» Fluidline in Blacktrack, is the best way to go for gel eyeliner. I prefer to use it with a small angled brush, because flat brushes don’t give you quite the same drama as angled brushes at the end of the line, which is what you need in this look. Make the line wider as you reach the outer corner of your eye, and at the very end flick your wrist a little to create the cat eye look.

8 9

Finish the eyes with a super dark mascara, then apply false eyelashes to give you the dramatic look. Long lashes are very trendy right now. It›s a very important step for the retro look. I usually use Makeup Forever eyelashes #27, it comes with glue and it›s very easy to apply. Moreover, there are many good other brands for eyelashes. But if you don’t know how to apply it you can go to any beauty center or salon where they can help you to apply the false eyelashes on you, even before your makeup.

Red or sheer red, is all you need to complete the vintage retro look. I prefer the matte lipstick and my favorites are; NOUBA Millebaci #7 , «Revelon» Red matte #900, Mac Russian red

Finally apply a little powder, loose or pressed, all over your face and finish by brushing on bronzer, apply blush on the apple of the cheek from that spot outwards. Make sure to use the right color that makes your face glow! Go for something shimmering as a golden glow to make your lips pop even more.

9 steps to get the retro look, it›s easy and quick! With practice all you need is 15 minutes to finish this vintage beauty look!

7

Light concealer; I usually use concealer at the end but before applying powder. My favorite is Makeup-Studio, it gives you a full cover and a fresh look. You can find this concealer at Layla Harmony salon, also they have many amazing makeup products. Make sure to choose the suitable shade for your skin tone.

Collar Coordination It’s the season to be jolly! Nope, it’s not Christmas here in Kuwait, but it sure is a joyful season dawning on us. I’m sure most of you have your calendars marked already with tons of wedding receptions, fancy dinners, engagement parties, baby showers...etc. I’m also pretty sure most of you ladies are all over the malls in Kuwait trying to find the right dress, with the right fit that goes with the right occasion. Having four occasions back to back is always fun because you get to play dress-up, however, it can render your wallet empty in a heart beat. Therefore, I propose that you let this month’s mantra be: stretch your buck. Get creative and smart with your money by making smart consumer decisions, how? One word: Collars. Detachable collars, to be exact, are the best small, affordable and fashion forward tool you can add to recreate a piece you already own. Don’t be afraid to go with plain colors, in fact, that’s what collars are made for. Pullout the little black/white/cocktail dress you only got to wear once out of your closet and revolutionize it with either a studded, pearl, beaded, lace or crystal collar on the occasion your invited to; you will look great and fashionable without ever exceeding your monthly expenditures. Collar pieces are a reinvention tool, so don’t stop with just adding them to your evening dresses, but try to also incorporate them with your everyday daytime looks, and trust me when I say: they are the next best thing after the simple white T.

Metalic-gold collar with floral detailing & a black stone. A small, noticeable touch on an old print.

Beaded choker for your little black dress on any occasion is perfect. (P.S.: to pulloff the choker, the dress’s neckline needs to be above your collarbone)

Pearl Collar necklace matched with the little white dress for that baby shower your invited to

Another casual look; I have a thing for lace and pearls, and this collar piece has both!

Pamper your lips!

Pamper your lips with the most glamorous colors and delicious flavors all occasions. Your lips are unique, this area could be the area of attention when you talk, when you eat, and most importantly when they represent your entire look. You need a refreshed look every once in a while, but how? These guidelines will help you get the perfect lips. 1- Before you apply anything on your face have a little bit of LOPILO or any butter for lip moisturizing. 2- Apply your foundation, cover your lips with it for a good base that will keep the color on your lips for a long time 3- Use the best lip liner you prefer and cover your lips with it. Also it’s all about covering your lips to have a matte look and long lasting color. DO NOT apply a glossy lipstick on the lipliner; keep it simple and natural. 4- If you want to lighten or change the color, you can add some concealer and blend it with the color. 5- If you want a glossy look, apply a little bit of gloss in the middle of your lips and blend. 6- If you want a stronger, apply your lipstick after step 1,2 and 3 liberally. If you want gloss on top of your lipstick apply step 5 and have it glamorous ! These steps will be just the right way to have a perfect shape and look for your lips. Try it on your crazy party night or on an elegant wedding party or a normal working day and LOOK BEAUTIFUL !

Romance

O

h romance, such a confused genre. A genre so repetitive that we can almost recite the cliché conversations. Two painfully attractive and successful people fall in love, and somehow that seems to take over everything they do in their everyday lives. They hate each other at first, but after a series of goofy, usually unfunny, situations where they just happen to fall in love. Or the screenwriters could be extra lazy and use the “love at first site” gimmick, a gimmick that causes me to slowly apply my palm to my face to ease the pain. My biggest issue with the more recent romances is the confusion of love with lust. Love in today’s cinema seems to be purely physical. Characters just fall for one another by exchanging looks; there is no real development for their feelings and emotions. A believable relationship has the characters actually developing a relationship. We as an audience need to see them grow, learn from each other, accept each others’ differences the way love actually is in real life. The fact that both main characters are unbelievably attractive will never be enough to create a convincing love story. You need substance, something the audience can relate to. If you were to make a plausible love story, you will need something vital; character development. Yes, it’s something obvious, but filmmakers tend to forget that. It is implausible for two to automatically fall in love after trading a few looks and half a conversation. The audience need to see the characters grow their relationship, to see the moment where the two characters learn to love and accept each other’s imperfections. No, you don’t produce a five-hour movie documenting every conversation the two have had; the development can be one simple moment, one small conversation where the audience knows that the two fall in love. If you ever watched Up, it told a heartbreaking love story in ten minutes. Everything we needed to see in the relationship has been seen, and that was just the exposition. I do not hate romance. But there are certain clichés that just make me mad. The next paragraph will list some of the things I hate in romances. Other than underdeveloped relationships, you’ve got the ever so predictable plot where the girl hates the guy at first. “Oh he’s just so irritating! But, umm…. he’s cute.” Or those unbearable ten minutes after the two break up, and we have a fifteen-minute montage of them being sad -- which is all pointless since their reunion is inevitable. (The previous one was especially common in rom-coms). And the most obnoxious, a random catastrophic event that stops the two from falling in love. I’m looking at you Nicholas Sparks. Personally I believe that claiming two characters fall for one another at first sight is just a lazy excuse to skip to the conflict. A great love story requires development. At the very least, a montage of the lovers forming their everlasting bond. By today’s standards, the formula just never works. Let the audience grow with the characters, not automatically accept them as having an everlasting relationship full of soppy poems and cheesy dialogue. Those might last in movies, but would probably last less than a week in real life.

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character By Paul Tough

The Great Unexpected : For Middle Grade

The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control.

What about his friend Toad? He was busy looking for a warm place to sleep. By the time Bear was through helping his friends get ready for winter, would anyone still be awake to hear his story? I had big thoughts to match the big wind. I wondered if we find the people we need when we need them. I wondered if we attract our future by some sort of invisible force, or if we are drawn to it by a similar force. I felt I was turning a corner and that change was afoot.

Dodger : For Teens By Terry Pratchett A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horsedrawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he’s . . . Dodger. Beloved and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett combines high comedy with deep wisdom in this tale of an unexpected comingof-age and one remarkable boy’s rise in a complex and fascinating world.

uwait. Porsche Design Timepieces is excited to announce the new partnership with Kuwait’s leading retail giant Morad Yousuf Behbehani Group. The functional, timeless and purist timepieces of Porsche Design will be officially launched in their new showroom at the Avenues, Phase II (Dome 3) this month. The collection will be also available at Behbehani Luxury Boutique at Al Hamra Luxury Center and MYB Luxury Boutique at Marina Mall. To celebrate 40 years of designing tradition, Porsche Design Timepieces will take this special occasion to present together with Morad Yousuf Behbehani the first watch with a mechanical-digital stop time function, the P’6910 Indicator. A unique, highly complex movement containing 800 components assembled by an Eterna watchmaker over 42 days and limited to 50 pieces in rose gold. „We want to thank Mr. Ali Behbehani and his team for the professionalism and effort dedicated to our brand. It is indeed a great honour to have the possibility to build this success with the leading and most respectful company in Kuwait. Fol-lowing Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, founder of Porsche Design, who always used to say, when you realise the function of an object, it’s form often becomes obvious, so realised Porsche Design the qualities and strengths of Morad Yousuf Behbehani and their mutual beneficial partnership also became obvious, so Oliv-ier Bovet, Regional Sales Manager of Porsche Design Timepieces.

Mr. Shahzad Gidwani, General Manager of Behbehani group (Trading Division), „Behbehani Group continues to grow, recognizing the requirements of its diverse consumers, while surpassing their expectations. Whether the customer is looking for a sports performance watch or a timeless chronograph, Porsche Design Timepieces offers innovation, quality and flair have something that matches eve-ryone’s needs.

The Porsche Design brand Porsche Design is a luxury brand with particular focus on technically inspired products. The brand was founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, and since then its products have stood for functional, timeless and purist de-sign. The first product F.A. Porsche came up with was the Chronograph 1, which earned him another milestone, apart from his automobile designs: it was the world’s first-ever black wristwatch, and it laid the foundation for the Porsche Design luxury brand; watches remain a mainstay of its output since then. Accordingly to their design philosophy, all watches are circular, for that is the shape that describes the movement of the hands. The dial and the hands ex-hibit the same rigour of design for optimum legibility. Black is the preferred colour as it „is the only colour that does not detract from the form”, so Prof. F. A. Porsche. In addition white hands contrast best against a black background. While 1972 saw the launch of the world’s first-ever black wristwatch, 1980 witnessed the first watch ever to be fashioned from ultra-tough, light titanium mainly found in aviation. Before that, this luxury brand also became the first design company to build a watch with an integrated compass (1978). And 2004 saw the birth of the P’6910 Indicator, the world’s first chronograph with a mechanical-digital display. www.thecitymagazine.net 93

Let someone close to you know exactly how you feel about him or her. This is particularly important if there is an adulation on your part. Maybe things won’t work out — but they certainly won’t as long as you keep quiet. Expect proper conduct out of your subordinates and you will get it. A financial opportunity could wither away if you hesitate too long.

A last-minute trip to far away places could be just what the doctor ordered. Excitement and, very probably, romance could well be the result — but only if you let things move at their own pace. Now might be a good time to begin a serious savings plan. If you wait until all your debts are paid before you begin, you will probably never save anything — and you’ll probably never be out of debt if you don’t.

A serious and quite disturbing love affair could begin for you now if you respond to the stimulus now being waved before you. If you are free and unattached, it might well be worth riding the whirlwind — because that is what it is likely to be. If already committed, make sure that this is what you really want, because it will probably cause a breaking of all old ties.

Getting to the bottom of a mystery may not be as pleasant for you as you think. Sometimes it is best to let sleeping dogs lie. In dealing with fellow workers on an important business deal, don’t allow others to speak for you, especially when the responsibility is yours alone. Keeping commitments may be a chore, but failing to do so could damage your reputation.

An upturn in your personal finances is definitely due and could come from a surprising source. Your best bet is to be totally honest and to hide nothing from those who may have a similar interest. If you lose, you won’t have lost your honor — and if you win, you win really big and there will be no carpers. Exercise your right to be heard in matters that are important to you personally.

You could gain an important and influential friend simply by speaking your mind and not allowing others to run roughshod over your or someone close to you. Spend a little time with a youngster or an old person who is close to you, even if it means making some personal sacrifices. Hours, not things, are important to those who love you.

October 2012 96

Maintaining the status quo may not solve your problems. You may be called upon to exhibit some independent thinking and some very positive action if you are to come out on top. In romantic affairs, keep things light and don’t go overboard with promises on the first date. Be extremely cautious when dealing with complicated machinery and don’t take unnecessary chances.

Climb down from your high horse and write that letter you have been mentally composing for the last few months. If what you feel is real, you would be quite foolish to stand on ceremony. In office matters, make sure you keep your tongue from flapping concerning affairs that should remain private. A slip of the lip could sink more than a ship It could sink your plans for the future.

Romance blossoms in the strangest places, according to the poet, and you could find this out to your utter amazement — and delight. Business problems may seem less if you take time to walk around to the other side so you can gain perspective. The same could be true for a personal matter that has been plaguing you.

Make sure that an old debt is paid in full before you go to the well once again. You might also do some serious thinking about your real desires and what it is you want to do with your life. If what you are presently doing is not making you happy — or at least contented — then why are you doing it? Take the advice of a friend seriously and give it a chance to work.

Estimate your personal worth, as well as financial, and see if you are able to make things balance. If you are found wanting, do something about becoming solvent once again. You would be well advised to seek medical advice about a serious problem. Office politics are definitely not your game and you should avoid playing such a game. Instead, select the most honest of you companions and back him to the hilt.

Problems of a financial nature are not as insurmountable as they seem. Seek good advice and then weigh it carefully before striking out on your own. Do not allow others to influence your convictions on moral issues, simply because it would make things neater and easier. On any tough question, the thing that is hardest to do is generally the thing you should do.
