Dear readers, The year is almost over, and we’re all working on our it’s simresolutions and priority lists. For us at ple and challenging: we want to continue our support for more Kuwaiti projects who have something good to offer or contribute to society. The challenge lies in the fact that there are so many things to discuss and so many people to profile. While working on compiling material for the theme of this issue, which is luxury, we discovered something unique about Kuwaiti businesses; many of them are directing this luxury towards a more socially-responsible way. For example, we visited Yasmin Farms in Wafra, a beautiful concept that is worth so much praise. By spending a lot of money to get the finest equipment and tools and providing the perfect conditions, the owners of this farm are producing pesticide-free fresh vegetables and hormone-free rich dairy products. This in my opinion is incredible. Magazine have also been selected by We at Boxhill College for Girls to give internships to three graphic design students; Maha, Nouf and Fatemah. We are very proud of their work and expect that they have a bright future in the field of design. Their creativity and flexibility are good qualities that will certainly push them towards excellence. Speaking about design, in this issue we featured Nuqat, a unique group of individuals who are working hard on enriching the art scene in Kuwait here, connecting many professions under the umbrella of creativity and design. We hope you enjoy this issue, and happy new year.

A company that has gained ground rapidly Since the launch of VIVA’s commercial operations in the Kuwaiti market four years ago, the company has consistently sought to present new and exclusive telecommunications, data and information services to its customers. VIVA has launched many innovative and comprehensive products and consistently provided high-quality mobile phone services. Although it was the third operator to enter the Kuwaiti market, VIVA has been able to compete strongly and has attained a substantial part of the Kuwaiti telecommunications market share.
VIVA the Innovator The Middle East, particularly the GCC, is well known for its high dependency on mobile phone usage and the high penetration of smartphones. This growth has been accompanied by a continual increase in demand for internet-based services on mobile handsets such as social networking, location-based services, navigation/local search, instant messaging, along with other applications. VIVA acknowledged these findings from the very first day of its launch and has since deployed one of the market’s widest ranges of promotions and bundles in partnership with the global mobile companies, offering customers a variety of smartphones and tablet computers at highly competitive prices. VIVA has also been a pioneer of superior services such as its Elite program, which gives priority to customers on the program at all customer service centers. As part of this program, VIVA’s Concierge service, a free of charge service for selected postpaid customers, provides them with the highest level of quality and personal assistance. In addition, the service enables members to access a large list of VIP Airport lounges around the world, making VIVA the region’s first telecom company that provides this kind of service. The VIVA Concierge service is offered in the form of a membership card, entitling customers to enjoy and benefit from a wide range of special services such as a phone secretarial service, travel arrangements, online shopping, courier services, car registration, and many others. Another innovation is VIVA’s ‘VIVA POINTS’ program. This program offers VIVA’s postpaid voice customers the chance to earn and redeem points to gain access to a variety of free services such as SMS’s, voice minutes, data usage, as well as bill discounts. Customers can join the ‘VIVA POINTS’ program simply by logging onto the VIVA website or by contacting the call center on 102 and requesting assistance, or by visiting one of the fourteen VIVA branches. New customers to the VIVA POINTS program are welcomed with 30 gift points from VIVA. After that, one point is awarded for each one KD paid off their bills. Subscribers of ‘VIVA POINTS’ are also given an additional 30 points as a ‘Line Anniversary Bonus’ from VIVA. This program is just one of the ways VIVA rewards its customers for their continuous loyalty and ongoing support.
Presenting customers with new and innovative services and privileges is part of VIVA’s long-term strategy in providing a differentiated and exceptional experience and VIVA invites all its customers to subscribe to the ‘VIVA POINTS’ program and enjoy its benefits. Being an innovator and early adopter of new trends, VIVA has also invested heavily into its social media platform, and was the first telecoms company in Kuwait to launch its commercial branches’ locations on the Foursquare application, as well as posting many customer competitions and special offers via the company’s account pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. This investment has been driven by the company’s belief in the impact social media has on its customers’ everyday lives, as well as the need to integrate it with traditional media tools.
VIVA in the Community In parallel with the importance of developing greater market share, VIVA also recognizes the importance of being a good corporate citizen. Since its inception, VIVA has regularly displayed its commitment towards corporate social responsibility (CSR), playing an active role in supporting Kuwait’s community on many levels. VIVA’s approach lies in seeking sustainable investments which will benefit the community in the long-term. This strategy involves building upon the company’s strong foundation of ethics and corporate governance; being consistent in its commitment to on-going, impartial, transparent sharing of information; and making sure that its core priority CSR commitments are achievable in relation to the company’s financial performance. The principal focus of VIVA’s CSR strategy is based around education and development, caring for the environment, investing in healthcare, encouraging entrepreneurial thinking and strengthening our bond with society. The progress achieved by VIVA in keeping to these aims has resulted in it being seen as more than just a telecoms leader. Today, the company takes pride in being viewed by the local community as one of Kuwait’s leading socially responsible and environmentally aware commercial organizations.
In conclusion VIVA has been able to engage effectively in a fiercely competitive sector by listening carefully to what its customers are saying, focusing on their needs and being enthusiastic investors and early adopters of new trends and technology. Its success and popularity has been largely based on gaining and maintaining the satisfaction and loyalty of its customers in a quickly changing marketplace. For the future, VIVA’s management knows it must continually to raise the bar on standards of customer service, value for money and corporate responsibility if it is to continue to develop its reputation as Kuwait’s most dynamic and most advanced mobile telecommunications service provider.

Parfumerie d’Exception As soon as you set foot in Parfumerie d’Exception, you realise you’ve entered another world. Here for the first time in Kuwait, fragrance shopping has become a sensory exploration that connects you with the elusive vision and dreams of artisan parfumers – captured in a superbly packaged flacon. It is home to an exquisite selection of the world’s finest perfumes, created by talented artisan perfumers from around the globe. They are ultra-niche, expensive, heady, superb and rare. Parfumerie d’Exception was created to fill an identified gap in the market whereby many of the world’s top niche fragrance brands would be represented under one very luxurious roof. A luxury concept appealing to a clientele that appreciate the niche fragrance market at its very best. An offering which cannot be confused with premium or lower end brands, providing 100% focus on the needs of the consumer seeking only the best within the world of fragrances. To this end, very specific conditions were set and adhered to, whilst the world was trawled for a portfolio of brands suiting this concept and the criteria of both the owners and the brands themselves. The result is a perfect mix of the world’s most luxurious and niche fragrance brands – all new to Kuwait and all exclusive to Parfumerie d’Exception. The owners, Beidoun of Kuwait, recognized that whilst they have decades of experience within the Cosmetics and Fragrance industry, this move into the very high-end niche category needed a different and independent operating style. To manage this type of concept a new and separate division was created whereby no influence would be reflected from existing operations. At the sharp end of the business, only the very best, experienced and professional shop staff would be recruited as front-line ambassadors for the brand. International Concept Designers were sourced who had no previous local applications within the industry. This has resulted in a completely fresh and very new look to this particular sector of the market. The owner’s philosophy surrounding Parfumerie d’Exception is: “No matter how amazing the concept may be, the true point of difference is in the brand portfolio within and the exclusivity of those brands” The category mix is primarily fragrances, with one top end Make-Up brand and one luxury Skincare brand, both sourced to complement both the fragrance category and the exclusivity of Parfumerie d’Exception itself. The inventory also includes exclusive top-end Fragranced Candles, Fragranced Room Diffusers; two of the very best Haircare brands where it is recognized local Kuwaitis have such beautiful hair in the harshest of local conditions. The on-going in-store marketing theme will be heavily supplier driven with a stance on individual brand education whereby the owners and founders of these wonderful niche brands will be regularly in attendance to promote their own individual fragrance creations. The elite clientele should expect a strategy of regular client communication, a new era of fragrance appreciation, a year of personal interaction with these accredited brand owners and a new experience within a highly focused niche fragrance environment. An experience Kuwait deserves. Already this year, Parfumerie d’Exception was visited by Marc Chaya, the President, C.E.O. & Co-Founder of Maison Francis Kurkdjian. A luxury fragrance house that for the first time in more than 150 years carries the name of one of the most celebrated perfumers of our time – Francis Kurkdjian. This is just one of the luxury fragrance brands found only in Parfumerie d’Exception in Kuwait. Other leading niche brands include Grossmith London, Mona di Orio, Nasomato, SoOud, Heeley, Atelier Flou, MariaLux, Lorenzo Villoresi, Puredistance, Odin, Frapin and 1528 Parfums to name just some of this wonderful collection. Parfumerie d’Exception can be found on level B1 Al Hamra Luxury Centre Al Sharq and is opening in The Mall, THE AVENUES Phase 3 before the end of December 2012.

Grasp your future
ur job as humans is to hold on to the thoughts of what we want, make it absolutely clear in our minds what we want, and from that we start to invoke one of the greatest laws in the Universe, and that’s the law of attraction. You become what you think about most. --John Assaraf Dear readers, it is so nice to connect with you once again during the month of December. Pretty soon the New Year will be here and some of us will start the yearly process of writing our New Year’s Resolutions. But, before writing out new promises for the future and not achieving them, as has been the case in the past, why not try a different approach? This December, I would like you to mentally prepare you for your New Year’s resolutions. In the past, you have most likely mechanically written out a list of items you would like to achieve for the next year. This method may work for some individuals who are very in-tune with their desires, but the problem with this listing process is that it is not connected to our subconscious. For the majority of people, it is very difficult to translate a list of dreams or goals into accepted reality. For those of you who wish to have better luck this year, I suggest adjusting your efforts to begin with an approach which allows you to experience and accept your dreams through visualization. If you can see it in the mind, you can see it in reality. That said, the visualization process must not be a sequence of images forced from your desire to visualize but rather, it must be an enjoyable experience where you feel yourself reaching your desired dream as if you are in the actual moment with smell, taste, touch, etc. When you see and feel, as if you have already achieved your desire, your mind will think that you have hit your target and will no longer feel the difficulty in reaching it. Without seeing and feeling, it is very difficult to cross over into the area of accepting your desires and you may find yourself mentally stuck or blocked. The visualization process allows the law of attraction to come into effect. The law of attraction says, what you think about will appear. So at this point ask yourself: what thoughts am I thinking? How often are these thoughts repeating? Are they positive or negative thoughts? What you think about will appear in your life. Thoughts that repeat in your mind will affect your personal perception and your attitude towards life. There are many ways to reach the visualization stage. Some of you may find it very easy to visualize but others may find it a bit more challenging to get into the mental state of experiencing your desired goals. For those of you who are newer at visualization, I suggest creating a vision board. The vision board is, basically, a board filled with pictures and words/phrases which allow you to create a tangible collection of dreams. It connects you with the state of accepting your future and dreams. Creating a Vision Board: Creating a vision board is a fun exploratory experience. Plan your vision board experience to take a few hours and can be a fun afternoon experience. Remember not to rush the process.
December 2012 16
To create a vision board: Spend a few days flipping through magazines and collecting images of your dreams and goals. There are no wrong pictures. Any picture that appeals to you is an excellent choice. Do not be afraid to use pictures of items or experiences you may feel are not possible, nothing is impossible. You may also cut out key words or phrases that you want to attract into your life like “success” or “love”. Glue your pictures and phrases on the board. They do not have to be glued in any particular manner. Some may prefer a more ordered/neat approach while others may others may prefer the collage/random style. In the middle of the board glue a nice picture of yourself which reflects a happy moment in time. When your board is filled and dry, hang the vision board in a place that is in an open positive space where it is able to “breathe”. This space should be a place you can view easily and frequently. Visit your board frequently. Keep it as a point of reference to keep you positively grounded. Let the board help you to enter into your visualization and feel the reality of having your dream materialize. Dear readers, I am so pleased to pass this wonderful means of mentally and physically connecting with your goals and dreams. With a vision board and visualization, it is much easier to stick with our New Year’s Resolutions once we have seen its true possibility. This is a simple guide for you to take. If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you so please connect with me!

reativity is something everybody likes. It’s a well-appreciated value. Yet it is considered by most people a luxury, not a major necessity of life. The term ‘creativity’ has been associated with science inventors, artists, and maybe some business entrepreneurs, but the essence of it is deeper than how it’s perceived. In an abstract sense, creativity requires freedom from constraints. Practically, it requires psychological freedom from outer/societal constraints, such as schooling systems, work conditions, societal pressures, and public norms. The product of such freedom is creativity; in other words, the product is an original individual. If we are being spontaneous, conscious, and free of programming, we would be naturally creative. It’s not something we gain; it’s one aspect of our natural state of being. However, society, in its broad sense, has been the biggest burden to creativity. Society teaches us to always be ‘The First’; the A student, the employee of the month, the prettiest girl, the most respected in the family. Society teaches us to always be respected; to behave in certain
December 2012 18
ways so that we sustain a well-respected image, to pursue certain career tracks so that we gain prestige, to marry certain people so that we honor our families. While this is good to the society as a whole on one hand, it is destroying the individual on the other hand. As society puts more standards on who we should be and what we should do, the real individual is lost. The original core of us will diminish over time, until we reach a point where the individual is totally nonexistent, and we just become machines working for the good of the so-called society. A creative person is a rebel. Creative people do not strive to build a shiny image of themselves; they rather want to express their deepest calls, regardless of how they will be perceived. Tip of the day: There are many like you who preserve their deepest desires, dearest dreams, and craziest aspirations, and live a cold fake life. It’s time now to go back to yourself. Be original and show up!

Baby room fit for a prince or princess
W
ho said a baby nursery has to be the typical pink or light blue, filled with cartoon characters, or to have a mural? Baby rooms can look very elegant and sophisticated, fit for the special new member easily. Many baby rooms have theme such as boats, teddy bears, princess, cars, a certain cartoon character, sports, and the list just goes on. If you would like to have a sophisticated and elegant nursery for your baby, I suggest stay away as much as possible from stereotyping. Themed baby nursery objects tend to multiply and the room ends up looking like a gift shop, very cluttered and messy. If you must use a theme, select a high quality mural as artwork, but don’t add complementary accessories. Now that we have agreed NO THEME, the color scheme will play a major role in decorating the nursery. Some popular nursery color schemes are chocolate & light blue, chocolate & pink, chocolate and lime green, lime green and pink, black and yellow, navy and green, and red and pink or simply just white! Always try to limit the major colors in the room to two colors as you can always accent them with other colorful accessories. Moreover it’s fun to play around with patterns, for example a monochromatic floral patterned pillow on polka dots upholstered chair. In a nursery, the bed is the focal point and it needs to make a statement.
When selecting bedding for your nursery I always suggest browsing and shopping online to get a feel of what you want and to avoid going to local baby supply store initially. Once you know what you want, you can start your hunt. It’s ideal that you purchase a functional bed that would fit your child for a couple of years by either expanding or having available add-ons which you can purchase at a future date to make the bed suitable to your child’s age. Other than the bed, babies have a lot of functional furniture that is not always very attractive. For instance, consider placing the baby’s changing table in a closet. You can even exchange the closet door with a drape for easier access and more decorative appeal. Instead of a traditional baby glider, shop for a vintage or antique rocking chair. There are also lounge chairs available today that offer hidden rocking feature. Kids come along with a whole lot of items, diapers, bottles and baby food to name the least. Make sure to store the clutter out of sight. Have lots of closed off shelves, you can have them concealed with a door or a curtain to make the room softer and warmer. Consider using an open bookshelf with baskets for toy storage. All other items should be put away. A baby’s room is as important as any other room in the house. Complete the nursery’s decor as you would any other room in the house. Select coordinating rugs, paint the walls to match with the bedding, use elegant light fixtures (perhaps a chandelier), add artwork, and select other sophisticated furniture. Even though babies don’t really comprehend the room, you will be spending a lot of your day in it. Make it lovely, inviting and relaxing for you and the baby..

Amazing
I am absolutely in love with Boutikee! With its fabulous decoration, unique items and amazing variety of gorgeous brands and items, it has become one of my favorite places to shop. I started to recommend it to my best friends, and I even challenged them to walk in and leave without buying anything -- they all lost the challenge, the simply couldn’t! As soon as you walk in and look at the available brands and pieces, you will immediately feel as if you were transported into a boutique in Europe. If it isn’t for the little amazing touch of Arabic on certain items, I would have sworn that this is a boutique that was carved out of a European shopping district and placed in Kuwait. If you’re looking for a jumper or a t-shirt that is so unique in its design and no one else would have it, this is the place to go. I bought several gorgeous classy tops from there and I’m starting to look frantically into my calendar, looking forward to any event for me to wear them. They are dazzling! I sat down with Ghanima Al Nusif and Anwaar Al Eidi, the people behind this gorgeous project to ask them about how they manage such a wonderful boutique and the challenges they face.
Q: When did you start with boutikee? A: We started in November 2011 Q: Why did you choose fashion as a business? We find fashion to be quite a challenging field, especially in the Kuwaiti market. Kuwaiti women follow the European trends as well as American celebrity trends, and keeping up with this takes a lot of effort -- and we certainly love a challenge! Q: How did you start this business? A: It all happened by chance! My friend Anwar was testing the market in a friends’ gallery called la blanche with a spanish brand. I called her at the last day and told her that I really liked the brand, and offered to collaborate and open a business. www.thecitym.com 25

Q: Did you find the support you needed to get you started? A: Certainly. My husband was absolutely supportive, as well as my mother and father. Q: How would you rate multi-brand boutique businesses in Kuwait? A: I think they’re booming all around the globe, not jus in Kuwait but as I mentioned earlier, Kuwaiti women like to keep up with international trends so it’s not a surprise that these boutiques are booming in Kuwait. Q: So tell us a little bit about Boutikee. What makes it special? A:We are very consistent with providing new exclusive brands that aren’t available anywhere else in Kuwait. We also offer the full range of items provided in a certain collection. We like to give our clients the freedom of selecting and choosing what they find desirable. Q: What are your prices like? A: Affordable, ranging between 20 to 200 KD. Q: When do you feel happier the most about your choice to open a fashion private business? A: I was happy from the first day, despite all the challenges and difficulties. It has been a wonderful experience! Q: What are the difficulties that you face most of the time? A: The delay of items in the customs especially during high seasons. Q: What is your advice for people who want to do their private business and are not sure how to do it? A: They have to take a step forward, try and then judge from their own experience. They shouldn’t be passive. Just be positive and do it! Q: Anything else you would like to add? A: To the Kuwaiti ladies, try to do something different -- you know you can. Not only will you be helping other people by offering the products and services, but you will be independent and support making the economy better. Small businesses count, trust me. Q: What’s your message to theCITY Magazine? A: Keep reflecting the bright minds of talented Kuwaitis.

Inside the life or a rider
Abrar Al Musallam is a beautiful person inside out. We absolutely adore her. She speaks her mind very candidly. She’s very transparent and has a strong bold character, and her relationship with her animals is very unique. She’s very close to her dog Tyson, and calls all the female horses princesses when she pets them. We saw how the animals are in love with her, they kept looking wherever she went and appeared very happy to see her. We absolutely admire her! We sat down to talk about her passion for horse riding and about her special photo shoot for Gucci, who chose her as a Kuwaiti icon. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. A: My name is Abrar AlMusallam, I am a horse rider/ show jumper. I have competed both in local and international shows. I love animals. I work in an interior design company. And I love spending my weekends at the chalet by the beach, and weekdays on a horse’s back.
Q: When did this amazing relation between you and horse riding start? A: It started in 1998, back when Kuwait Riding Center was a tiny chalet and a stable with two small arenas. My brother and sister got me into it. A few years later I had to leave for university and spent 8 years abroad where I didn’t get the chance to ride much. I moved back to Kuwait four and a half years ago and started to take my horse riding more seriously.
Q: What does horse riding mean to you? A: Horse riding is more than a hobby to me; it has become a lifestyle and a daily life commitment. I feel empty and disoriented when I’m not on a horse for more than a day. It is an activity where I find a peace of mind, exertion of everyday life stress around us, and communicate and deal with one of the most beautiful creatures. I feel zoned out of this world when I’m riding. I feel at peace and everything around me pauses. My brain and inner being go through a good rest. It’s a completely different, beautiful, silent, and graceful world. It gives you so much without you realizing.
Q: What are your achievements in horse riding? A: My achievements so far are riding in the Arab League last year especially in Qatar CSI 4* with a horse I never rode before, and at a level I never rode in before, I will forever be grateful for that opportunity. I also won a few local shows. My transformation as a rider over the past three years is one of my biggest achievements. My hard work and commitment in riding and on myself just slightly started to pay off, but this is just the beginning. Also nothing is as rewarding as building a horse up to another level, or working on something so hard with a horse and then seeing the positive results.

It’s one of the best feelings ever in this sport and of course winning a challenging competition. I honestly haven’t kept track of medals, as we get medals every time we get placed and I’ve lost count of that, however, the trophies are what I can still count, and would love to lose count some day.
Q: What are the main competitions that you have participated in? Which one was the most difficult ? A: The main competitions are the Nationals in Kuwait, the Arab League in Doha as well as the UAE, and Jumpin’ de Weel in Nisse Holland. The most difficult one was Doha CSI4* and Dubai CSI3*.
Q: We heard that you have been chosen by Gucci to be their model. Is that true? A: I wouldn’t exactly call it modeling for Gucci. I was chosen as a candidate by Canvas Magazine for their project with Gucci Middle East. To celebrate the icons of Gucci’s heritage, Canvas chose a few personalities and photographed them in Kuwait at a location that links to their interest/passion hoping to

capture a candid moment in their everyday life. Gucci provided the clothing and accessories. They want to celebrate the best of Kuwait through the iconic people chosen for this project who are helping shape the countries present and future, and I luckily happened to be one of them along with my horse. It will be a limited-edition photography book that will feature Kuwaiti icons and will be launched at the Gucci Store in Al Hamra sometime in January.
Q: How do you feel about the Gucci experience ?
Q: Are you the best female rider in the Middle East? A: No, but would love to be someday. My previous trainer Noaf Benessa was the best female rider in the Middle East and the first female Arab to get qualified for the World Cup, hopefully I’ll follow the same path someday.
Q: What are your future plans for this hobby? A: My future plan is to keep working hard in training to start competing in big international shows at a competitive level with my 6 year old horse Radihaza who I am currently focusing on.
A: It was a great experience and exposure, and since my shoot included a horse and was equestrian-related, I got invited to the Gucci VIP section at the Global Champions Tour in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
Gucci was sponsoring the show, and I got to meet a lot of interesting and high profile people. I was mostly excited to meet the princess of Monaco Charlotte Casiraghi who happened to be there. She’s also a show jumper sponsored by Gucci and the great granddaughter of Grace Kelly!
Stay positive, and always remember patience is a virtue. To theCity magazine team, Thank you for featuring me in your magazine, and for this enjoyable and professional experience, wish you all the best for the future editions. Keep up the great work!

The downside of being #1!
Kuwait the Fattest Country In the Arab World and 2nd on the Global Scale
s far as obesity goes, there is also a world ranking. Presently, the United States remains at the top is this listing. Yet, strikingly, 4 Gulf States are also within the top 10 of this group. Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have all unfortunately gained the distinction of having severely obese populations. As we delve deeper into these world standings, we must consider Kuwait. Kuwait’s present ranking is number 2 on the world obesity scale. Nevertheless, if you take into account the size of this nation’s population, you can easily regard Kuwait as having the world’s largest obese community. Furthermore, as you can imagine, being number two has its drawbacks. This is because obesity, which is simply the condition of having too much body fat, can induce a various unwanted medical conditions. The most common condition related to obesity is Type 2 diabetes. This condition occurs when either your body enters a state where it can longer produce required levels of insulin or your body’s cells simple ignore the insulin that is generated. If this condition becomes chronic, your body can then lose its ability to utilize insulin that is necessary to regulate normal blood sugar levels. The resulting elevated and unregulated sugar levels then wreak havoc throughout your system by generating significant cardiovascular (heart) and renal (kidney) complications. Many regard one’s lifestyle choices, apart from medical conditions that pre-dispose an individual to have excessive weight gain, as the major contributor in the development of obesity. This view has been established within the United States, where the members of this nation’s population have adopted more sedentary lifestyles and unregulated eating habits. Such a lifestyle has in turn been adopted in several countries across the globe, namely Kuwait. Here in Kuwait, we have an overwhelming access to fast food and are part of a culture that is heavily vested on gatherings that provide arrays of eating choices. It is then no surprise that with this lifestyle comes the unwanted tendency to develop unregulated habits, which can in turn foster obesity. Now, what does this all mean? Are we doomed? Not necessarily, as many scientists, physicians and government officials around the globe have anticipated the coming of this epidemic. This has in turn spawned massive movements to meet the demand for enhanced health worldwide. Again, in this case Kuwait is no exception. Take a look around and you may notice at least one new hospital within your area or a discussion related to the 900 billion KD that will be invested to improve healthcare within this Gulf State. Moreover, just as these groups have and are implementing strategic plans to better your health, you too can take a more important step by striving to control your eating habits and add in a regular exercise regimen that will be in tune with your healthcare provider to improve the state of your health and thus life. Your Smile: A Glamorous Smile
“Rabbit smile” with correct lips shape made with IPS crowns
A healthy smile is a must. However, a gorgeous smile is a luxury not every one have. Fashion industry, film industry and media have defiantly increased the public awareness of beautiful smiles. This, in turn, increased the number of patients walking to dental offices demanding one of these smiles they see on media. However, after the work has been done, most realize that their teeth are fake, dull and nothing glamorous about them. So, what went wrong? What most people don’t realize is that “white teeth” does not mean glamorous and copying a person’s smile to another person does not always work. There are several key factors that must be taken into consideration to make a smile a beautiful smile. White teeth! How white is white? Many patients have been to dental offices seeking crowns and whiter teeth, only to be disappointed with dull less-lively white teeth. Color of objects is a product of how that object allows light to pass through or is reflected back. High reflection of light means dull and lifeless color. Generally speaking, ceramics – the material dentist use to make crowns for teeth and veneers- are very reflective and dull. Dentists usually incorporate additives in the ceramics to make it less reflective. The amount and how these additives are incorporated in the crown or veneer will make the difference between a beautiful crown and a dull lifeless crown. A good dentist will instruct his/her technician to make the perfect crown that looks white and naturally beautiful.
PFM crowns made with correct additives
IPS crowns made with correct additives
How does a perfect smile look like? That is one question with many answers. The reason being that there is no one standard or recipe that describes how a beautiful smile looks like! Smiles come in many shapes, forms and alignments. Straight, curved, pronounced front teeth, overlapped, square or round all are natural examples of teeth. But what makes one person stands out with his/her smile is the whole “frame”, teeth and the surrounding lips, gums, and muscles. Teeth, which are in harmony with the rest of the surrounding tissue, will accentuate smile’s beauty. Attempting to copy one smile shape of one person to surrounding lips and muscle tone of another may result in a problem. For example, “rabbit smile”- or pronounced front teeth-will look gorgeous if lips are thick and muscle tone is relaxed. But the same smile will look unpleasing if the lips are thin and muscle tone is strained. Another example, narrow teeth with a curved smile line look nicer if a person have a large smile – both of his/her lips move high when smiling. A person with lesser lips movement should have rounder teeth with flatter smile line.
Highly reflective dull crowns
A new smile takes a lot of designing skills. Many factors must be taken into consideration to create a beautiful smile. Overlooking these factors can result in disastrous unpleasing smile.

Bringing nature to your table You might think that a drive to Wafra is long, but in fact it isn’t, we arrived to the place around 45 minutes after leaving to head there. Getting there was very easy. The farm is nothing short of beautiful! Greenery as far as the eye can see. Yasmin Farms produces several brands; our focus for this issue is on the dairy brand Alban Dairy.
December 2012 42
First on our tour was seeing the cows, and we can assure you that they are very happy cows! They have a designated area for nursing cows, and all cows get to enjoy an automatic back-scratcher. How cool is that? We then went to see the goats, and they have different breeds. They are as pampered as the cows; they enjoy the same facilities. We were asked to put on an overall and gloves -- we were about to enter a sanitized zone. After putting on the clothes and feeling like we’re walking into a nuclear plant we were introduced to the machinery that milks the cows. This is absolute high-tech for ensuring that the milk is clean, clean, clean!Â
www.thecitym.com 43
The milk is taken into a machine that sterilizes it to ensure that it is clean from all microbes and germs. It is then taken to be processed into different dairy products. All the products have a seal and a date stamp, and their shelf life is relatively short compared to the commercially-produced dairy products. However, the difference lies in the taste: once you taste the rich creamy flavor of these products, you will realize that the commercially-produced dairy products are no where near as good as these delicious dairy products.
December 2012 44
After sterilization, the milk is then processed into clotted cream, labneh, cheese, and all those different delicious things. We tasted the cheese and fell in love; it tasted so fresh and clean! Speaking of cleanliness, you may think that a farm with animals probably doesn’t smell so good. Well, unlike any other farm, this farm smells really ... clean! It is cleaned regularly and the cleaning is maintained well throughout the day. All the dairy products are preservative-free, hormone-free, which we think is a praiseworthy effort. The cheeses range from halloumi, feta, akkawi, areesh, nabulsi, and other varieties.Â
www.thecitym.com 45
We then paid a visit to the chicken farm, where all the hens have a big fenced yard where they can roam around and run. The hens are not injected with any antibiotics and are pampered premium natural foods to lay healthy eggs.Â

To be continued... The products of Alban Dairy, made from cow’s milk as well as goat’s milk, include a range of cheeses, clotted cream, milk, laban, yogurt. They are currently available in special designated sections in all branches of Sultan Center. The farm itself has a store -- the Farmer Shop -- which features all the dairy products produced in the farm. Aside from cheeses that are produced locally in the farm, they also sell a number of imported premium quality cheeses like Italian parmesan cheese and Swiss raclette. The store is open to the public on weekends, and to make the trip worthwhile, the farm offers a nice outdoors lounge area where people can sit down and enjoy the view of the farm greenery and the nice weather. They also have a Farmer Shop Cafe, which is located inside the Shaab branch of Sultan Center. In the cafe, aside from enjoying healthful delicious food, people can take classes to learn how to make their favorite kinds of cheese.

Who said one cannot enjoy ice cream in winter? It’s certainly one of my guilty pleasures. Besides, you have to be realistic; some winter days are relatively warm, so sitting outdoors as the cool breeze blows and in the sunlight while eating some a scoop of gelato is just perfect as a compliment for the day. I heard about the opening of Scoop A Cone, a Kuwaiti cafe that offers gelato and snacks, in a new location in Salmiya’s Aknan Towers. I headed there, and I can easily say that it has become one of my favorite spots now. The place is beautifully decorated with bright nice colors, comfortable chairs and a very nice arrangement for seats. I started with a cappuccino; it had a pleasant aroma of coffee and the balance between the milk and coffee was just right. Then I moved on to try the sandwiches. My choice was a halloumi sandwich with grilled veggies in a ciabatta bread. It was delicious. The veggies were grilled perfectly, the cheese was warm and melted and the bread was soft and perfect. I had a strawberry smoothie with that, and it was very refreshing! They sere mini ice cream cones, there, and they are delicious! They come in a variety of inventive original flavors like rosewater, pistachio, dulce de leche, and my favorite Ferrero Rocher and red velvet. I highly recommend these little cones, and because of their size you can try different flavors without worrying about eating too much. Scoop A Cone also offers bonbons, which are scrumptious balls of ice cream rolled in fudge. They are addictive! You will love them! They come in different flavors and different colors, and they look very nice and taste so yummy. Time really flies when you’re in good company in a nice place. I had to have my espresso before I begin my evening, and my espresso came with a cheesecake. Rich creamy cheese topped with December 2012strawberries and raspberries, sitting on a base of rich ground biscuits. It was very delicious. I recommend you seize the oppostunity and enjoy the nice weather with the company of your loved ones in Scoop A Cone. It will be your favorite place to go for dessert and a quick bite. Trust me. 50

.... NUQAT creating a synergy
We are impressed by Nuqat. They are incredible talented people who have a vision uniting the creative scene in Kuwait. We first heard about them when they organized a conference last October, a series of lectures and workshops, featuring acclaimed and world-renowned creatives from various fields from the MENA region. Behind this special organization is a team of dedicated hardworking individuals; Hussa Al Humaidhi, Sarah Al Nafisi, Dana Al Hilal and Wakim Zeidan. First introduced as “Nuqat Ala Al Huroof”, the team’s aim was to develop Arab creativity on all levels, which includes design, advertising, communication, architecture, fashion, production and many other creative fields. The team goes beyond just providing an educational platform for individuals with interest in arts; they aim to connect and share experiences, and create a collaborative community that facilitates inspiration, production and execution. We are proud of the fact that Nuqat, a one-of-a-kind platform that encompasses the creativity and genius of individuals from across the region, started in Kuwait. We sat down with Nuqat’s four founders and discussed the challenges they faced while launching this unique organization.
December 2012 54
Sarah Al Nafisi Q: You managed to get some of the biggest names to join the art conference. How did you manage that? A: It’s all thanks to Tarek Atrissi. He attended the 2009 Nuqat Ala Al Huroof workshop, which managed to garner enough interest for him to endorse the later editions. Tarek believed in us despite the fact that we haven’t organized any major events before. He is a firm believer in educating and sharing experiences. We also believe that our team presented the mission and vision of Nuqat in a very solid and concise way that made the speakers believe in us and agree to join our event. Those big names attracted other big names; it was like a snowball effect.
Hussa Al Humaidhi Q: Many people believe that Kuwait’s community of artists is very small and tiny. Did you think that organizing an event in Kuwait would be a little bit risky as there may not be enough audience for the material you’re presenting? A: We actually believe that the community we are serving is not ‘tiny’; there is a big creative community in Kuwait and in the region generally that seeks to be exposed and be surrounded by likeminded individuals. We created Nuqat to be not only a platform for them to display their creativity, but also a forum where they can establish dialogue and exchange ideas. The reason behind our expansion is that we want the local community of artists to collaborate with other communities from the region. We believe that this will give them a space to interact and collaborate to further develop their ideas. We also believe that our audience aren’t just people with passion for arts. Creativity can be adapted in multiple disciplines. It can be applied to science, business,
Dana Al Hilal education, and many other fields. Nuqat aims to establish a space that encompasses these different experiences from a variety of backgrounds. We also believe that the market is pretty huge for young students, designers, architects and photographers to name a few, who want to learn more and will benefit from such a creative ambience.
Q: How would you rate the participation in your October event here in Kuwait? A: Honestly, it was beyond our expectations. The number we expected was half of the actual turnout. The participation in workshops was even higher than our Dubai edition earlier in March. A lot of the attendees were highly attentive and responsive, many of the speakers were impressed with the audience’s interaction, and this proves how ready the market is for establishing creative dialogue.
Q: So tell us a little bit about Dubai. What made you decide to start an event in Dubai? A: Well, we were invited by Design Days Dubai to do our conference around the time of Dubai Art Week. Seeing that it is a great opportunity for us since we’re aiming to take Nuqat to the MENA region, we said yes!
Q: Were you intimidated by Dubai? This is Dubai, where artists from around the world flock to attend events and showcase their work, you know. Did you feel that it was risky for a young project like Nuqat? It was risky, in fact, because the UAE audience was not familiar with Nuqat and we were not familiar with the resources available in Dubai. We have a Nuqat ambassador in the UAE, Bushra Badri, who helped us locate facilities and be our on-ground representative. Also, people in the UAE didn’t know what Nuqat was, and had no idea who was behind the name, so we had to build a name for Nuqat. Our event was taking place around the same time as Art Dubai as well, which created a busy schedule for the audience and challenging us to attract the audience to this new event. We strongly believe in the mission of Nuqat, and we believe that it is worth taking risks. Thankfully the event ended up being a great success, and gave us a good regional reputation.
Wakim Zeidan
www.thecitym.com 55
Q: We are very proud that a creative conference that has a reputation among the creative community in the region stems from Kuwait. But were you intimidated by the audience in Dubai? A: Our audience in general, for the events of Kuwait and Dubai alike, are people who are interested in design and creativity and are seeking more knowledge and experience. This applies to the audience here in Kuwait and also in Dubai, which leaves room of familiarity to us rather than intimidation.
Q: Are you planning to organize this conference every year? and aiming to expand? A: Yes we will be organizing an annual conference under a different topic, and we also plan to expand further. Nuqat aims to connect creatives together to refresh creativity, spark inspiration and activate innovations. Therefore, we plan to continuously organize smaller events, such as workshops, lectures and collaborative projects throughout the year.
Q: What is the influence of your audience on your upcoming events? A: Nuqat was formed from our frustration with the creative gaps around us, in terms of community, education and collaborative platform. So, as a community we get constant feedback from the audience to determine the needs that will further fill the gaps. After each conference, we assess the overall questions and conclusions from the discussed topic and extract a new topic that serves as a continuation to the dialogue. So the attendee’s participation serve as a direction for our future plan. Also, getting constant feedback and constructive criticism from our social media tools helps us understand what the audience wants and develop further as a community.

My name is Reem Al Sultan. I’m a twenty year old student at Kuwait University. Horse riding and photography are my hobbies that came together when Abdulrahman Al Fuzae, a rider & trainer at MEC, proposed that I sell the photos for a cause. So with the help of Khaled al Kulaib, the owner of www.kuwaitequestrian.com, and Abdullah Hamadah we decided to charge 30KD for 90 photos and divide the money so that 80% goes towards one of the show jumping competitions, 10% for Bait Abdulla, and 10% as monetary income for the photos. Our initial goal is to make a prize contribution to one of the competitions, but in the long run we would like to see a greater turnout toward the sport in terms of sponsors and facilities. If we reieve such motivation, we would become more competitive nationally and perhaps internationally. I think the best way to describe our passion for riding is this quote: “Bread may feed my body, but my horse feeds my soul.”

Accessorize with
Rings
Accessories are girls best fashion completion, and each season new trends of accessories are added in the role! I decided to begin with «rings» since they are my very first passion! Rings are not those tiny simple bands that are just worn around your finger any more, designers are adding their simple, yet impressive touches to turn those simple pieces into a WOO-HAA artistic masterpiece.
by Nouf Al-Jasem
Some of the -in fashion- trends for rings are:
Chain Rings: Chain Rings have been around for some time now, simple one chain can be added to multiple, heavy ones ..
Statement Rings:
Lots of details are in the statement rings; studs, rhinestones, oversized crystals and jewels are all there.
Stacked Rings:
Mix & match your rings with stackable bands in every style! From delicate to pulky, from double to as many rings as your finger could hold.
Tribal Rings: All photos by by Nouf Al-Jasem
Tribal rings are inspired by the tribal culture, by a fusion of the past and present, as well as tribal influences from India and Africa.
Geometric Rings: Those kind of rings are completely different from what are used to see, so if you like to be unique, your jewelry box must contain at least one of the geometric rings!
Upright/StandUp Rings: Oversized Rings: Look glamorous and be the centre of attention with oversized rings that will take your finishing touch from boring to brilliant!
Above The Knuckle Rings:
December 2012 62
The latest must have are the ‹above the knuckle› rings. The name already reveals where you wear this ring! They usually come a few sizes smaller than the ones you›d normally wear. Love the delicacy of those rings!
Calling them upright or standup rings because of the way they are worn! Watch out when ladies wear these kinds of rings.

EVENT IN WHITE BOUTIQUE
December 2012 64
The place to go for planning your big day Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
A: Hanadi Al-Zahamel and Sarah Al-Ali. We have been friends since our days in school, and our friendship continued and evolved into something more beautiful: Event In White Boutiqe. We have a strong passion for design ad planning, so we decided to start Event In White. It’s the fruit of our passion for design and planning and our friendship.
Q: What exactly is Event In White?
A: It’s a boutique that provides brides with everything they need for their big day, without the need to travel abroad for high-class boutique; we provide it all and make it available here in Kuwait. We chose this name since the main color for weddings is white; we want to celebrate this color, and we want the name to suggest that this place is for wedding planning.
Q: From where do you get these stunning dresses?
A: All the wedding dresses dresses we have are brought from Paris. We traveled to several European destinations to see how the business of wedding planning and design goes, and we reached a decision to sign with a couture house in Paris.
Q: Is the taste of the Kuwaiti bride difficult?
A: Yes, indeed. Kuwaiti brides are often very aware of the latest trends and strife to be appear as the best and most stunning on their big night. They often choose the most unique dresses out there, and from our experience we noticed that some even choose dresses that are unfamiliar and perhaps a little strange, but their choice is always sophisticated.
Q: What types of dresses are available in your store? A: Wedding dresses, as well as evening gowns.
Q: How do you help the bride choose her dress?
A:Well, at the beginning we sit down with the bride about the design she prefers to wear, and after that we come up with a few suggestions and sketches. We meet again and show her what we have in mind, and we make any modifications necessary if the dress doesn’t suit her body -- of course there are certain designs that don’t look good on a bride who’s plump, while other designs don’t suit a bride who’s very skinny -- at the end of the day, our job is to ensure that the bride looks at her best.
Q: A kuwaiti bride often wants her dresses to be exclusive and very unique. How do you maintain this with the bride? A: We respect our client’s privacy, and when a bride visits with her family and friends we always make sure that no one else is in the boutique, in order to give her the comfort of choosing the dress design that she wants. We also make an effort to ensure that she chooses a design that is exclusive and special.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
Sarah: I would like to thank my father for always supporting me and for his help in decoration, and I would also like to thank my husband designer Omar Al-Rayyes for supporting me from the start. Hanadi: I would like to thank my family for trusting me and supporting me financially and encouraging me to pursue my dream, especially my father. We would also like to thank Profondo Photography for the beautiful photos they took of our work, Hanadi Burhama for adding her beautiful touches on our brides, designer Omar Al-Rayyes for his continuous suport, and Hanan Elegant Lady Salon for their gorgeous hair styles. We also want to thank theCITY Magazine, especially Lana Al-Rasheed for her support of talented Kuwaitis.

An urban luxurious sanctuary
December 2012 68
Tucked in a quiet corner in Sanabil Tower’s mezzanine, Ten Spa is an unparalleled sanctuary from daily life’s hustle and bustle. As soon as you push the door and enter, you will be enveloped by the soothing silence, accentuated softly by relaxing music. What you are about to experience is nothing short of luxurious world-star hotel standard. Allow us to walk you through: We were greeted with a warm genuine smile by receptionist Efferson, who seated us on comfortable sofas and served us ginger tea, and a cold scented towel to wipe off the stress of the day. Taking in the atmosphere, we greatly admire the oak wood and marble used in decorating the spa. They add a luxurious depth to the place that we appreciate. The dim lighting helps you absorb the serenity in the place. The Italian head of therapists and managing director Mr. Anthony Schembri introduced himself and handed us the spa menus. He explained to us what we will be getting from each treatment. Anthony recommended that we try the Ten Spa Signature Massage, which combines different techniques and is highly customizable. We were then introduced to our therapists, Adeih and Rabin. We were asked if we had any health problems to take into consideration during the therapy session. The session itself was nothing short of spectacular. The lighting in the therapy room was soothing, and coupled with the soft music playing in the background, it efficaciously made the room a calming sanctuary. Elements of wood, stone, and marble were also present in the room. Anthony explained to us about the oils and treatments used in Ten Spa. The massage oils used are not synthetic oils; they are 100% organic Panpuri oils, which are ranked in the top 5 spa products in the world; used by hotels such as the Rtiz, Four Seasons and the Queen Elizabeth cruise lines. The spa also offers a variety of treatments which includes body scrubs and masks, facials, and skin detox packages, all of which use renowned Panpuri products. This isn’t all that is offered by Ten Spa -- Ten also offers salon services, which include pedis, menis, hair cuts and shaving. The space designated for the salon boasts a relatively high ceiling and big windows, and is naturally lit by the sun during the day. All the services in the salon are appointment-based, so clients come in and leave according to their booked schedules, which means no delay, and no waiting for therapists or hair stylists to arrive. All in all, the experience at Ten Spa is one of a kind and is certainly unsurpassable. It is without question the best spa for men in Kuwait today.
Ten Spa is open from 10 to 10, and is located on the second mezzanine in Sanabil Tower in Sharq. Their phone number is 22924040.

Our contributors Shaikha Al-Shaya and Sabeeka Al-Fuzai decided to take their passion to the next step and start a business on their own. This wonderful duo is the team behind The Makeup Room! We are thrilled. We love seeing young passionate people pursue their dreams, and the fact that Sabeeka and Shaikha are contributors in our magazine makes us a little extra proud. In this month’s issue, we asked them to talk a little bit about The Makeup Room. It all started with our passion for beauty, art and makeup. We started cooperating with each other and after some time, we became determined to turn our dream into a success. Our friendship turned into a partnership, and our passion turned into a dream come true. So how did it all start, again? Our journey began when we started to search for a place here in Kuwait from which we can learn how to apply makeup professionally. This search led us to Layla Harmony, a reputable beauty salon. After recieving much support and training, we graduated with professional certificates, which paved the way for us to begin making our dream a reality. We would like to thank Layla and Mirna from Layla Harmony for their major support, which helped us immensely in shaping a plan to get us to where we are today. After extensive makeup training courses and long planning, we felt ready. We had to make it happen, so we did just that: we created The Makeup Room! A space where we can apply makeup, play dress-up, and just have fun with makeup to achieve that gorgeous look we look for. Our mission is to deliver flawless perfect beauty while maintaining simplicity. Our goal is to create a reputable entity in the ever-growing field of makeup. We already started. We’ll see you in the Makeup Room!

Fairy tale wedding dresses Many brides want something out of the ordinary on their big day. A castle setting often inspires a more lavish style wedding and therefore fairy tale wedding gowns to match. Below you will see a range of charming fantasy wedding gowns that I’ve selected for you. With fairy tale wedding dresses, as well as buying from the high street, you may wish to work with a designer or have your own ideas:
2
The mermaid style gown: is perfect for standard shapes to create some curves and for hourglass figures: it will accentuate your natural curvaceous shape. Petites need not avoid such headline grabbing pieces either as the halterneck, bow detail and the ruched mermaid hem will keep the eye running vertically up and down the body in a straight line in a straight line! Crank up the star wattage is this Hollywood starlet-esque gown by paying homage to the glamour and sophistication of the golden era of couture. A mixture of severity and beauty, dramatic yet soft, this dress would not go amiss on today’s red carpet.

This season, colored wedding dresses have gained popularity more than ever before. Brides want to look stylish and modern and achieve this with colors that make their dresses unique and special. Ranging from lavender to icy blue and from mint green to dusky pink, all possible shades are taken into consideration by brides, who never stop looking for the perfect style until they see their unique appearance in the mirror. If you want to be a beautiful bride on your wedding day, make your dress stand out due to its color. December 2012

In the last years, most brides had wedding dresses without sleeves, but now the focus is exactly on this type of dress. Conformist and nonconformist brides alike can opt for this design, instantly transforming even the simplest dress into a show-stopper. Depending on the season and also on your style, choose from among full length sleeves, short flutter sleeves or cap sleeves. All of them look spectacular, trendy and stylish and match most body shapes. Most of the times made from lace or from the same material as the rest of the dress, these sleeves can have details as crystals, sequins or satin flowers. A dramatic wedding dress never fails to impress. With a full tulle skirt and with romantic details such as lace, pearls or crystals, this dress will make you step out of the norm.
3
Cinderella will go to the ball, And boy will she make an unforgettable entrance, This dress is all about indulging your every girlish whim. It’s a great shape to create a sense of drama but actually the fitted bodice is a flattering choice for many body shapes in particular for fuller brides as it ‘holds and moulds,’ and for a full bust the scalloped neckline is most flattering, meanwhile the wide skirt creates a smaller looking waist. It’s fun to try a range of dresses on to see the effects, have a go on a large skirt just to witness the wow factor.
7
Grecian style wedding gowns are making waves this year, being some of the most popular and loved dresses both by designers and brides. This classic piece is extremely elegant and contemporary, making brides feel stylish and modern. You should look for dresses which are made of chiffon or organza, these being perfect either for a formal wedding or for one with a not so high level of formality, held for example on the beach. The intricate look can be obtained with pearls or crystals placed on the sash or on the shoulders.
5
The Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 runway presentation was filled with defining moments that nearly knocked us off our seats. From the moment the first look took to the runway, we were holding our breath in disbelief that this much gorgeousness could come from one designer. Just look! Wedding dresses with dramatic edge from Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 bridal collection. Loving the beautiful explosion of tulle, lace and color. Above, gown with voluminous tulle cape; below, strapless gown with tiered overskirt in light blue.

High neck and cap-sleeved shoulders took over the runway at the Spring 2013 shows. Oscar de la Renta presents his version, with a slightly drop-waist, embroidered-and-pearl bodice and full, silk taffeta pick-up skirt.

Simplest winter BBQ
I
love the winter, I really do. It’s the best season of the year here in Kuwait. I love how it makes gatherings almost mandatory, I love how we meet with friends and enjoy the weather, and of course the best way to gather and do these things is while having delicious food! Of course everyone has a different style when it comes to preparing a barbecue. Some people prefer elaborate preparations while others like to keep things simple -- I happen to be from the team that prefer the latter. So what exactly do you need to prepare a barbecue? Start with a list of people you want to invite. Once you have that ready, make your trip to the grocery store. Make sure you have coal, a grill, tongs and gloves. Now on to the food! You need to have your condiments ready, so cheese, ketchup, mayo and mustard. Next: bread. One more thing you need to consider is the meat you’re going to serve. Are you serving burgers? Are they frozen, or are you preparing them yourself? I think getting frozen burgers from a good brand is not a bad idea. You like hotdogs? Get those too. Marinade your chicken and meat, put it on skewers, and off to the grill! A good thing about barbecuing is that you will be eating the food while it’s hot, and because you socialize a lot and because the smell of the food is everywhere you will find that you’re enjoying the atmosphere much more than you’re enjoying the food -- of course the food itself is delicious! You know that! If you run out of meat, put some corn on the cob, on the fire, and enjoy the delicious taste. You need to remember a few important things though; your french fries need to be prepared while you’re grilling, so get someone to handle that for you. Also don’t forget soft drinks and refreshments. I organized a barbecue recently and invited all my best friends. I invited the family of theCITY Magazine, and oh the fun we had! Enjoy your winter, don’t waste it without throwing a couple of barbecues, and have lots of fun!

PAGE Aloha readers! So in this issue we decided to write about freedom, not any kind of freedom, but the one where you could free your mind and set yourself free. These days so much have been going around that keeps your mind occupied. Not enough space for you to relax, which is totally fine, but sometimes we personally reach this state of mind where everything is just too stressful. So our motto for the time being is to just let it be. There is no reason to worry about the small things! Leave some space for yourself. We are all busy thinking about what happened today, yesterday, two weeks ago, what will happen tomorrow, or next month. But we don’t realize that what’s done is done, there is no turning back and what will happen is our destiny, or perhaps our fate. Now what is freedom? Every person defines that word in a different way. Some people say it’s being free to do whatever pleases you without limits, while others say it’s being free from someone or even being free to be who you really are and having no one judging you. But to us freedom means having to free your mind off of everything and to just relax. Being worry-less, and strees-less is freedom. Freedom: 1) The condition of being free of restraints. 2) Liberty of the person from slavery, detention, or oppression. 3) The capacity to exercise choice; free will. 4) Ease or facility of movement. Now think to yourself, what does freedom means to you? Byeeee

Words cannot describe how much I love this movie. It’s so hard to put into mere words. But I’ll give it a shot: This is a movie a person with my taste can only dream of existing. It hits every note perfectly. The comical witticism, the carefully choreographed fight scene, all the quirky characters just fill the inside of my body with pure joy every time I watch them. I am in love with this movie. Before you run to your laptop and download your movie, (let’s face it, you’re not gonna actually buy the movie), I warn you, this is not a movie for everybody. The cartoonstyle effects, while dazzlingly beautiful, may not appeal to the average viewer. Also may cause seizures. And it might be slightly difficult to catch the offbeat jokes the movie uses. Scott Pilgrim doesn’t only break the fourth wall, it refuses to even acknowledge its existence. The movie creates a bizarre videogame-like world that you’re just supposed to accept. The movie doesn’t warn you that it’s weird, it just presents itself to you without your expectation. And that, to me, is the most admirable quality the movie has. The movie spits on any form of pesky realism and indulges you in one ambitious piece of escapist art. You might argue that a movie like Spiderman is unrealistic. But compared to Scott Pilgrim, Spiderman is grounded in reality. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World may not be as bizarre of an experience as movies like The Yellow Submarine, I mean, it least this movie has a plot. The plot however, is bizarre in its own right. So this is how the story goes; a guy falls in love with this girl, but she can’t go out with him because the hero has to battle all of her 7 ex-boyfriends before he can go out with her. I know it doesn’t make sense, but it doesn’t have to. And the funniest part the plot, all of the characters just accept it. Nobody in the movie stops for a second and questions the reality of the situation, they just roll with it. And I won’t spoil the awe inspiringly choreographed battle scenes in the movie. But I will say this; one of the battle sequences, includes a Bollywood dance. This movie speaks to me, it plays right towards both my hipster and gamer tendencies. The clever humor, the countless videogame references, and the battle sequences that would make Bruce Lee roll in his grave with glee. Even if the movie doesn’t appeal to your taste, I still would recommend watching it. It is worth it just to get a completely different movie experience than the usual. Just see how much a director could do with a movie. The movie attempts nothing but to be pure fun, in my eyes, it succeeds tremendously. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is one of -- and will probably remain -- my favorite movies I’ve ever seen.

Looking fabulous, or feeling comfy? Do you think that university is a place to show off? In my opinion, university is a place to learn and is not a fashion show or a runway. However, nowadays I notice that most girls are wearing crazy outfits that look like they’re out of an avant-garde fashion show. I honestly think that girls should wear clothes that suit the atmosphere they’re in. For university, nothing is better than wearing something casual yet funky. It doesn’t hurt to wear something nice and comfortable -- such clothes do exist, you know! Comfortable jeans, a nice shirt and good-looking comfy flat shoes will keep you feeling good and relaxed throughout the day, and will not consume a lot of time for you to get ready and prepare for school. Why would you want to spend an hour dressing up, putting on make-up, etc, if you’re just going to university? A lot of girls today wear well-known brands from head to toe in hope that they would look fashionable and elegant, neglecting the fact that you can achieve elegance with simplicity. I saw a girl the other day holding a fancy clutch while wearing a training suit. It looked very odd to me. She could have easily complimented the casual look by carrying a back pack or something that fits this outfit. Seriously, you guys, you need to understand that simplicity is the mother of all beauty. Look comfortable and attractive, not crazy and out of a freaky fashion show -- it’s just university!

A Science Olympiad Winner His name is Abdulwahab Ahmad Al-Hajji. He’s a 17-year old with a strong passion for earth science, and an unweavering interest in the arts. We first heard about Abdulwahab when he won the bronze medal winner in the International Science Olympiad, making him the thrid worldwide -- that’s a big achievement worth applause. We sat down with Abdulwahab to talk about what his many passions for the science. He explained to us that the olympiad which took place in Argentina this past October focuses on gelology, astronomy, meteorology, and environmental science. “Combined, this is called earth science,” he said. Abdulwahab competed first in these fields on the level of schools in his educational district, and later qualified to compete on the level of all schools of Kuwait, another competetion that he won. “Four of us were picked later to be trained by Kuwait Univeristy professors. and that was to prepare us for the big event. We did well there, and I ranked in 3rd place!” he said. Abdulwahab is adamant on pursuing his passion for science as a career. “My interest in science seems like it has been there forever, really. For instance I was always amazed at how electricity works. I would stare into wires and wonder, how on earth do these things work? Now I know how electricity works and I want to use this knowledge in projects that help in the earth sciences,” he said. He owes his success to his studious nature and curiousity, noting that he prefers to read and apply what he reads about. “I don’t prefer to read only, I like to read and apply as soon as I can. This lead me to go on several trips to Sulaibikhat and other desert areas to collect limestone,” recounted Abdulwahab. During his visit to Argentina, Abdulwahab gave a presentation about solving a problem that involves a river in Argentina. After his presentation, he was approached by a German professor who offered him a scholarship in one of the best universities not just in Germany, but internationally. “Of course, I said yes!” As a young aspiriting scientist, Abdulwahab says there are many things one can do here in Kuwait to have sustainable energy. “We can use the energy of the sun and turn it into something that saves us a lot instead of something that we complain about -- of course this will cost a lot of money, but I’m doing a research now that will be published in May in a journal for the Kuwait Science Club, and it talks about how we can use the solar energy effectively and cost-effeciently.
Photography And Arts Abdulwahab is also interested in photography, namely surrealist photography. “I love it because I’m a big fan of Salvador Dali, and his influence on surreal photography is great,” he said. His passion for photography started when he was six years old. “My mother bought me a camera, and I loved taking photos, but I only began to be interested in surreal photography at a later age when I was 12. I started to read about it online and I took some classes and read some books,” said Abdulwahab. What he enjoys the most about these photos is the fact that they are used to speak his mind in a way that is expressive but not direct. “Many people look at the photos and feel that they don’t understand what’s going on in these pictures. They usually express feelings or thoughts that the photographer himself has,” Abdulwahab explained. He held two exhibitions so far, but doesn’t plan to take his photography as a career. “I like to keep it as a hobby. It relaxes me,” he said.

Luxury cars on campus Every day when I’m in campus I’m surprised by the number of fancy cars I see. Some days it becomes too competitive, I feel like if you don’t have a certain category of cars then you don’t fit in. The other day I was talking to a Spanish exchange student and he was so amazed by the fact that we have luxurious cars when we’re still students. Back where he comes from, people study hard and work harder in hope that they can buy a car that’s half the price of those luxurious beauties. Here are a few pics from what I see on campus on a normal day.

The luxurious Spider is out!

Featuring all of the updates recently found on the updated MP4-12C coupe, the Spider promises to take the fight to the Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder and help reinvigorate life into the high-performance sports car market. As you wouldDecember expect, the MP4-12C Spider is essentially identical to its coupe 2012 82
sibling, meaning it’s also made good use out of the advanced carbon fiber monocoque, tipping the scales at just 165 lbs. Despite the added weight of the electronic systems required to open and close the hardtop, the Spider has only gained 40kg/88 lbs over the coupe, meaning no modifications to the monocoque were needed. The new MP4-12C Spider is offered with the same engine as the updated version of the MP4-12C Coupe: a 616 HP 3.8-liter V8 twin turbo engine combined with a 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission. The Spider version will sprint from 0 to

What is it? Born out of a passion for service quality and simplicity, Es’al Emjarib is a Kuwaiti iPhone application dedicated to rating and reviewing services in Kuwait. Designed with a local feel to it, Es’al Emjarib is developed to serve as a customer service outlet; it virtually brings together every service provider in Kuwait. No longer are consumers compelled to succumb to the pressures of traditional marketing campaigns. Instead, with Es’al Emjarib, consumers are the ones to hold the reigns. They themselves provide direct feedback to businesses and allow them to gain critical insights about customers’ requirements and expectations. When customers are disappointed with a particular service, they turn to Es’al Emjarib to vent. However, on a more positive note, when customers are pleased with a particular service, they share their experiences on Es’al Emjarib. Therefore, customers are directly marketing for businesses by recommending their favorite dishes or sharing their admiration of a service on Es’al Emjarib. Furthermore, companies are inviting customers to share their feedback on Es’al Emjarib. By doing so, companies convey to customers their determination to enhance the service quality and provide them with an exceptional experience. The application is gaining its ground as the platform for Kuwait customers to draw on other people’s experiences and make informed decisions. How does it work? Each service category is rated according to 3 relevant criteria. For instance, restaurants are rated based on price, food, and customer service. Airlines, however, are rated based on price, aircraft facilities, and customer service. Users can easily access other people’s ratings & reviews, as well as rate and post their own reviews of businesses. The application’s functions are further extended in a “Polling” section. Interactive poll questions that show people’s opinions on random and entertaining topics in Kuwait are posted here. What’s next? Es’al Emjarib was an instant hit with more than 12,000 downloads! Companies are constantly contacting the Es’al Emjarib Team to add their businesses to the application. In response to this instantaneous success, the Es’al Emjarib Team is working on adding more categories and interactive features to the app. According to the team, Es’al Emjarib will expand beyond Kuwait! More will be revealed soon on this matter. Download Es’al Emjarib to remain abreast the latest developments in Kuwait’s services sector!

GERARD DAREL Autumn – Winter 2012/13Accessories We love them. We may get many new ones each season, but whatever happens, we grow attached to them. Our favorite objects, faithful as well as confident companions, bags are accessories that can say a lot about us and frame an outfit, so they are naturally an important stylistic exercise for Darel. The bestsellers from the house of Darel showcase a taste for detail and an aesthetic sense combined with a functional use in women’s lives. Among them is the Simple Bag. It took two seasons for it to take hold among the catalogue of Darel icons. Its minimalist cut, its straight-cut leather soberly bolted to the handles, with no lining, and its removable pouch have made it the most clever of all-terrain bags. Laptop, folders, makeup case, notebooks, weekend bag—it’s always on hand! For its third season at Darel, the Simple Bag is dressing up in fine mouse grey, bordeaux, khaki, blue, purple and python-style leather. This autumn is also the Plum Bag’s big moment. Inspired by Boston bags, its straight lines, reinforced with patches of a contrasting color, give it a contemporary look that is the perfect addition to the graphic styles of the Darel autumn-winter wardrobe. In cinnamon washed suede or chocolate patent leather, it nestles elegantly in your elbow or, more casually, hangs from the shoulder by its removable strap. Built as a true ready-to-wear collection, the new Darel leather goods cover a spectrum of wants and styles, revisiting vintage lines to give them a more modern feel. In that spirit, the Flat Pom Bag pouch, in sand-colored suede or black leather, and the School Bag satchelin geranium-colored leather echo an autumn somewhere between New York and Paris. The vertical volume of the Trotteur hobo bag, in black or two-toned brown/chocolate studded full-grain leather, is perfect for daily life in the city. As is the Midday Midnight bag in grey leather, whose trapezoidal curves and short handle give a dash of light, energetic movement. www.thecitym.com 99

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Laini Taylor Any book that opens with “Once upon a time” is inviting high expectations. It’s a phrase that inevitably evokes fairy tales and leather-bound classics about epic adventures, setting up the anticipation that readers will discover worlds filled with magic…In this case, the story that follows…is a breath-catching romantic fantasy about destiny, hope and the search for one’s true self that doesn’t let readers down. Taylor has taken elements of mythology, religion and her own imagination and pasted them into a believably fantastical collage.
HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
Stick to your guns if you believe in a cause and don’t let yourself be swayed with what some people consider “practical considerations.” In business deals, be cautious about signing your name or giving someone the goahead until you know all the facts. Romantic attraction to a desirable Leo could prove very exciting and it could involve a very long-term relationship.
Let yourself go wild for a day or two. Indulge a few whims and spend some of your mad money. But don’t let it become a habit. You need a fling now and then, but you should strive to buckle down hard in between them. A good chance at a promotion or new job could be lost if you appear to be too much of a gadabout. Romance may be a little less exciting for a time.
TAURUS (April 20 - MAY 20)
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
A long vacation trip, possibly involving water, could be on the horizon for you. Take people at their word, but then make sure that they live up to it. Office procedures could be improved by some of your ideas if you will make the move to get them started. Look for correspondence or other messages from a long-time sweetheart, but be cautious in reacting to what seems like a sure thing.
Give serious thought to changing your lifestyle to make room for a loving and gentle Leo. Should you decide to do this, plan on a lengthy relationship, as this could be a very serious affair. In business, you could make a killing if you will just use your intelligence and make use of the knowledge that is common to all. Avoid self-indulgence and overdoing things in general for your health’s sake.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - DECEMBER 21)
Steer away from romantic involvement with a Gemini. They can often be good friends, but seldom make happy lovers. Exercise your right to speak your piece, particularly in a family or close business relationship. Avoid the error of trying to live someone else’s life for him. An excellent chance for you to shine brightly in your community could be offered to you.
When collecting an old debt, it might be wise for you to make sure you pay one at the same time. Offer a young person the chance to benefit from your experience, but don’t be put out if they refuse it. A new love or the renewal of an old one could make your life brighter for awhile — but don’t depend on it lasting forever.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Maintain your self-respect by refusing to accept unearned money, even when someone attempts to thrust it on you. Home life could be more pleasant if you get rid of the idea that you are the boss. Learn to share responsibility with others and you may find the load is much lighter. Expect others, however, to do their share and then give them the freedom to do so.
CAPRICION (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19) Good times are in store for you, both at the office and in your romantic life. Keep a smile on your face and avoid being cross or testy for no particular reason. In dealing with colleagues on a touchy situation, allow others to contribute, but try to keep your own hand in, as your experience may be needed. Check on a health problem without delay.
LEO (June 23 - August 22)
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)
In planning a quiet weekend with your loved-one, make sure that at least one person knows where to reach you in case of emergencies. Job opportunities could abound for you now, but you might be wiser to stay with the one you have, as unexpected promotions could be already in the mill. Try to keep your social life to a minimum for awhile and get some needed rest.
Accept what can’t be avoided, but try to do it with a smile instead of a frown. Compromise is not always a dirty word and you might profit by adding it to your vocabulary. Physical exercise and improved health habits could solve a major problem for you, but don’t try diagnosing other people unless you have a physician’s license. Keep your head down and your voice low when it involves office politics.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
PISCES (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)
Get up off your duff and quit wasting time. Your ability to turn out first-rate creative work has never been sharper, but you may not realize it because of sloppy work habits and an ingrained laziness. In romantic situations involving a married person, you would be wise to walk lightly and avoid becoming deeply involved. A close friend may call on you for help.
The good deeds of a friend may prove much more helpful to you in the long run than the flattering words of one who has his own axe to grind. Operate out in the open in romantic affairs as much as possible, because there are those who would like to have information about your affairs that could benefit them at a later time. A relative may need help.
