hat makes an artist an artist? What makes a particular group of musicians resonate more with the public than others? What distinguishes the very few artists that reach very high levels of commercial success from the scores of others that don’t? There are, of course, no clear answers to any of these questions, for if there were the music industry and the entire genre itself would almost certainly look very different than it does today. However, almost one thing is universally true: for virtually every musician, if live audiences gravitate towards you, the rest will fall into place.

November, 2013 for him before he died. I found that writing was the only creative thing I could do in little chunks of time I had while being a caretaker. I just didn’t seem to have the blocks of time or energy that songwriting required. But writing was also therapy. Looking back on the last several years, although difficult, still helps me come to terms with the death of my father. And in many ways my father cared for me as much as I cared for him. RH: What was attending the Grammys like? Too long and fussy, or a lot of fun? BS: I loved it. It was a bit surreal standing in the hallway watching Sting and Elton John walk by. Or getting off the elevator next to Adele. That kind of stuff is still new and exciting to me. Probably the best part of it though was seeing several of my Austin Sanders has written his own album as well as songs for guys like Jack Ingram and Eli Young Band. In 2012 he was partly responsible for Kelly Clarkson’s big splash onto the country charts with the groove-driven “Don’t Rush,” which peaked at 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 23 on the Hot Country Chart. It’s a happy accident that Sanders is a staff writer turning stuff in to Nashville--he didn’t necessarily set out to write country, just like he never dreamed of being the tour photographer for Miranda Lambert. But that’s what he’s doing right now; still riding the wave he caught when he left UT Austin and the promise of a 9-to-5. I met up with Sanders at The Hoppy Monk while he was in town for a weekend back in August getting ready to go back on tour. Ryan Heape: Talk about The Forty One: what is it essentially about, are there things you learned from that experience and is part of your motivation for writing the book to raise awareness for ALS? Blu Sanders: It’s a memoir about coming home to El Paso to care for my father, who had ALS, and racing to restore an old car 36

music friends from the 90s all working there in some capacity. And I had that Kelly Clarkson song out on country radio at the time so I felt like I was part of the gang. RH: Yeah, you went to UT Austin in the 90s, right? BS: One of my first big classes at UT was Economics with Steven Tomlinson. I remember on day one he said something along the lines of, “College isn’t for everyone. You’re not a failure if it’s not for you.” Of course, in the early 90s I thought that meant, “quit school and be a musician,” which in hindsight would have been ridiculous. But I loved the sentiment and have never forgotten it. You can find your own path. RH: You write for country artists, but for a lot of your songs, there’s nothing inherently country about them. Do you feel you’re drawing more inspiration from other places? BS: Definitely. I grew up an 80s kid listening to Depeche Mode, U2, and 80s rock. I never listened to country. Heck, my mom used to turn on Y96 in the car just to make my sister www.thecitymagazineelp.com

For those who are unfamiliar with this new phenomenon, November has been christened the one month of the year where hair growth (of all kinds) is encouraged. For men in particular, this means the possible addition of a debonair mustache or an allout lumberjack beard.

You’re working on new Sleepercar songs at the same time, right? Yeah.

Is it fun to switch stylistic gears when you’re writing? It is. I find that when you feel like you’ve hit a rough part in the road, you can go over to this part and all of the sudden it’s like the Autobahn, and you can just cruise through a couple of parts. When that gets traffic, you go back to some Sparta stuff. Also, I’m still super into the idea of doing things that I’ve never done. I’d like to do something more electronic-based, but only as a singer. To only think about lyrics and melody would be really interesting. I like LCD Soundsystem. I like an eight-minute song that has like two minutes of a groove that has nothing really going on, but for some reason it’s still interesting. I’m not successful enough at one thing that I’ve been pigeonholed, so I feel like I’m allowed to do whatever I want. I have a very small fan-base that’s pretty accepting. “Oh OK, you’re going to do some country stuff? www.thecitymagazineelp.com

They talked about a relatively new acquisition, the Adobe Studio, which is on a neighboring farm. “It sounds like an animal’s living inside of it,” Mauldin said of the mixing board there. “The adobe studio was a lucky find a few years ago,” Godfrey added. “We walked in and it had tractor tires stacked to the ceiling and farm equipment all along the walls, (he claps) but it sounded amazing. We just said, ‘We can do something with this!’ We take everything out. It’s better. Lay down a stone floor. It’s better. The last thing—a console. And that finally solidified it—that’s a studio.”

Hearing Johnny Najera’s Confessions | By: Ryan Heape |

El Paso Native Johnny Najera, Usher, and the Unrecognized Partnership That’s Low-Key Changing Music

I

El Paso is home to numerous school districts and high schools, each taking proud ownership of their own orchestra and/ or band. These fearless music makers sacrifice time (often showing up to school before sunrise) for group practice, (and staying long after school has ended) for games, competition and (often) more practice. If the time sacrifice wasn’t enough, these students put themselves in the limelight every week to support their school—playing at football games, in front of large crowds at regional and statewide band competitions and more. These students work hard, putting in hours of practice at school and on their own at home to master the art of their instruments—all the while balancing a full load of schoolwork. Here are a few programs that are making musical waves in the community and helping El Paso’s scholars excel in all areas of academia:

Being in band showed me how to appreciate its beauty and has shown me that music is the path I want to take for my future. ‘Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live?’ In short, music has given me more life,” said Alexander Venzor, Clint High School Band Member.

Del Valle High School Del Valle High School Band has made a lot of noise in the competitive arena. This award winning marching band has made it to the UIL Texas State Marching Contest three times, in 2003, 2005, as well as in 2009. The program has also seen success at NMSU’s Tournament of Bands in Las Cruces. In addition to these prestigious competitions, the band has also competed in the BOA Regionals and Super Regionals in El Paso and San Antonio. 74

It excites me to know, as a parent, that our children will hear these songs when they are older and, hopefully, remember our special drives to school. Music has a power to open the mind. Besides

event we may have forgotten. “New” music has its place. However, I am a traditionalist. Our children have the rest of their lives to listen to and appreciate “new” music. However, it is important for them to know and love the ones who came before them. Why? They should understand that One Direction would not be had it not been for New Kids on the Block. Now that we are living in an almost completely digital age, kids today don’t have the opportunity to go into a record/tape/CD store. However, there are way more avenues for which to explore music today. But, it’s easy for the youngsters to forget the roots. I grew up on Mtv, Friday Night Videos, and the corner tape store. Music appreciation started early. When we decided to have children, I made it my mission to instill in them the same love I have for the classics and watch killer videos. I want them to appreciate bands such as Fleetwood Mac, The Kinks, and The Eagles. We expose them to everything from 60’s-90’s, classic rock, heavy metal, prog-rock, and even soft AM gold. I feel joy when our 8-year-old daughter sings along to The Doors. I feel pride when our son requests Bad Company. Sure, Mom frowns when Black Sabbath is at full bore, but I was exposed to Metallica and Judas Priest at their age and I’m fine. Soft through heavy, music is good for their young minds. Hearing a great song a couple times and being able to sing along is like memorizing passages from literature. Listening to the greats, and how it relates to what they will regard as their favorites, provides a history lesson without them knowing they are learning. Kids today should know about concept albums, that Jethro Tull was named after an 18th century agriculturist, and all of the bands in which Eric Clapton was a member. Maybe it’s this father’s silly dream for his kids to be junior tune-hounds, but they are benefiting from music’s grand effects. “Dad, what’s the name of this song again?” As I well up, I respond, “That’s Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water.” They in turn reply, “Turn it up!” Indeed I will. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The holidays are coming!

The holidays are coming!

Downtown Boogie November through the beginning of January is the time we do the most shopping. Whether it is for presents

for our loved ones, or ourselves, this time is filled with many nights out, family gatherings, and holiday parties. The time is now to make a stylish

impression, and make all of our family, friends, and co-workers eat their hearts out!

A beautiful venue, possibly that company holiday party, is the backdrop

for you to dress to the nines. A drop-dead-beautiful cocktail dress is a holiday wardrobe necessity; check out the ones from Trend Society and Delia’s. Whether it’s sleeveless or has a plunging neck be sure to over-accessorize. Pile on the bracelets and bangles like in the look from Nono’s, or the necklaces like in the look from Ruby Lola. Add a

ring and some simple earrings. Pay attention to the details, to the

purse you pair with your outfit, clutches are a must. If you opt for

pants, make a statement with a bold color and pattern, like gold and

black pants from Ella Blu. And when shopping for a fabulous winter coat, the powder pink Ted Baker coat from Union Fashion is a personal

favorite. A new version of a classic little black dress can be found at Ruby Lola, edgy and modern.

As you prepare to dance the night away, dress to the rhythm of

the occasion, and put your dancing high-heels on. A night out

is plenty reason to shop for a new outfit. Granted we have to budget

for presents for loved ones, but we always manage to find something for ourselves, don’t we? It’s natural and perfectly acceptable to spoil yourself and then spoil others. Make sure you are happy first, then others will follow, right?

Special thank you to Lotus Nightclub for allowing The City Magazine team to shoot in the beautiful backdrops that adorn the marvelously decorated venue!

for her Oversized Ladies‌Sizes matter! For fall bigger is better. Oversized jackets, sweaters, knits, cardigans, coats, you name it, they are all in this fall. You can wear this trend in every stage of the day from a comfy fuzzy sweater to go for coffee, to a bulky wool coat to go on a night out. This is a feel good trend. It is so comfortable and cozy that you will have no excuse to not embrace it this fall. Just remember to think about proportions; if you are short wear your oversized pick with heels and a fitted bottom.

for her Peep Toe Wedges It is kind of obvious that peep toe is out for fall and winter.

for her

Ladies, even if the weather report says it is going to be unseasonably warm it is fall, we have to dress for it, and shoes are a good way to start. Instead of peep toe wedges wear a bootie, boots or pointy heals.

for him Plaid Gentlemen you can be so happy this fall because PLAID IS BACK! Just don’t over do it! A plaid shirt with a plain sweater or jacket is perfect. Play with the colors and pieces, jackets, coats, sweaters, overcoats… have fun with it. Girls, we can follow this trend too, plaid does not discriminate, wear it, own it!

for him Loooooong hair Guys seriously, not even Thor should be having long hair this season. You can’t go wrong with a short-short-short hairstyle but you can also play with a top-heavy blowback or a wavy top. No mullets, no pony tales, no longer-than-life hair, PLEASE! I recommend if you have long hair follow the trend, cut it all and donate it to a worthy cause. You can find different organizations where you can donate your hair, this way you not only will be in but also have good karma.

for him Statement Scarves Most men are not open to follow trends; this is an EASY trend to follow guys. A bold scarf can make or break your outfit. You can just throw it around your neck or place it carefully with a knot, it doesn’t matter, we are not picky. It can have an awesome pattern and be light or be one color and bulky. Go and get some statement scarves today and wear them all the time this fall and winter. 94

Nazareth Living Care Center “We are pioneering the way skilled nursing rehab facilities look, feel, and operate.” The Sisters of Loretto in partnership with Ascension Health are proud to be operating El Paso’s only non-profit Catholic skilled nursing facility within an 800-mile radius, Nazareth Living Care Center. In 2013, Nazareth has earned 5 star ratings in both the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Nationwide Nursing Home Comparison and in the US News & World Report Best Nursing Home Rankings. “People need to be able to function and do as much as they can physically for themselves in order to lead happy and fulfilling lives, and that’s what we help them with here at Nazareth Living Care Center, “says Dr. Kevin Sandberg, Director of Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Services. they need in a timely fashion so they can return to their normal lives as quickly as possible. “Our entire team focuses on results; we work hard to get each patient strong, functional and as independent as possible,” says Joy Martinez, CEO. Nazareth also has a separate wing for patients who need longer-term care. It has its own team, led by Medical Director, Dr. Martha Manquero-Butler. “Our patients become like family members, and we treat them as such,” she says. “Our skilled nursing level of rehabilitation provides top notch therapy to our patients,” says Sandberg. He believes visiting a facility to get a feel for the atmosphere is crucial. “It’s all about choice. If you’re going on vacation, isn’t it nice to see the hotel before you pay for it as opposed to being sent someplace blindly?” Both Dr. Manquero-Butler and Dr. Sandberg are confident that once you visit Nazareth Living Care Center, you’ll see why it’s special.

Southwest Plastic Surgery “At Southwest Plastic Surgery, it is more than just about beauty.” The word “plastic,” which is tied to the very name of the artful practice of plastic surgery denotes sculpting, and is derived from the Greek word plastikos, which means “to mold or give form”. A very fitting definition in that we trust a surgeon’s skilled hands, which are those of artists, to not only shape specific pieces of our anatomy, but perhaps more precisely, our confidence by restoring form and function. Having received their medical degrees in General Surgery from Texas Tech in El Paso, Dr. Frank Agullo, and Dr. Humberto Palladino, are both Board Certified Plastic Surgeons who received intensive training from the very prestigious and world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “Mayo Clinic is one of the top 5 healthcare institutions in the world-so it’s a very specialized training because we were exposed to everything from the simplest cases to the most extreme,” shared Dr. Agullo. “And not only that, but we received one-on-one training with some of the best plastic surgeons in the United States.”

Offering boutique-style first class service, Drs. Agullo and Palladino have maintained their focus of providing an individualized approach and patient care while ensuring attention to detail every step of the way. “Plastic surgery is more about the quality of life, whereas other types of surgery are about quantity of life,” shared Dr. Palladino. “We’re not going to make you live longer, we are going to help you live better. Improving quality of life is what we do.” The Southwest Plastic Surgery philosophy is to offer personalized first class service, which is specifically tailored for each of our patients. Dr. Agullo and Dr. Palladino founded Southwest Plastic Surgery with passion and belief in a higher cause and purpose. They offer their patients the possibility to renew themselves and restore their confidence. Ultimately, offering them the opportunity of revival which transcends physical beauty, by lifting their spirit it allows them to gather hope and courage to live a fulfilling and happy life. By doing so, they hope to inspire others to be creatively courageous and fight for

Don’t forget to garnish the turkey with an assortment of herbs and other edibles to create a show-stopping main course.

FOOD

I

n America, Thanksgiving is arguably the most important feast of the year. And my family has had its share of festivity faux pas. One memorable time, my Dad prepared the bird and put it in the oven then walked away to focus on the important task of readying the house for his 24 guests. The tables were set and decorated in high style, the hearth fire was lit and stoked, sides were stirred and sampled. But when it was time to check the turkey, he found a raw bird. It had not been roasting the whole time because he had forgotten to turn on the oven! And of course there wasn’t enough time to get it done by dinner. A little scrambling and frantic dialing ensued. But all was not lost. He found a prepared turkey from a local gourmet shop and the feast went on without another hitch. Another year, he forgot to take the bag of giblets out of the turkey before roasting it. And you know what? Despite some initial hand wringing and epicurean embarrassment, the finished bird turned out just fine. The moral of these stories is that while Thanksgiving is a much-anticipated event loaded with pressure to get everything just so, it doesn’t have to be perfect for you and your guests to have a wonderful time. Remember: It’s a day about gratitude and coming together. Consider all of the things in life you are grateful for and the frustrating mishaps will either fade into oblivion or provide you and your family with something to laugh about for years to come. Following are some planning tips I have learned over the years to help you navigate the big banquet and hopefully avoid a few pitfalls the day of: Guests: Settling on the number of people you expect around the table is key. This number might be dictated by the space you have or by your familial obligations. Whatever the case, this number impacts everything from seating (do you need extra tables?), to the size of turkey, to the number of dishes you have or need to get. If your family or friends have a reputation for last-minute surprises, save yourself the headache by forming a contingency plan now. It’s always better to have leftovers than a paltry spread. Menu: Pull out your cookbooks and old family recipes at the beginning of November, to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the planning process. Few things will squelch your excitement like rushing through this step at the eleventh hour. Likewise, grocery shopping the day before Thanksgiving

No holiday is complete without some whimsical collectible pieces. Meet Vernon the Vadalia Onion Doll, Mr. Caleb Carrot, Mr. Talbot Turkey and Rory the Rooster. They’ll keep you company until your guests arrive!

is like hitting the mall the day after: It’s frantic and congested. And with perishable items in particular, you’re likely to come up short on one or more key ingredients.

119

FOOD Try at least one new dish. Whether or not it has a comeback the next year is based on how guests react. Remember, for instance, the trendy Turducken—a partially de-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed with a small de-boned chicken— replaced the traditional turkey. Well, let’s just say it was a little like three women showing up to a party in the same outrageous dress. It was too much! And while Turducken will go down in the annals of amusing holiday missteps, the unexpected addition of macaroni and cheese that was introduced a few years back has become a mainstay. This rich and creamy carband-calorie-blowout dish is so popular that my family would shout in protest if it weren’t part of the feast. Who knew? This year, we will be trying an even more These gorgeous, hand-painted Pheasant and Duck serving pieces are like little sculptures for your dinner table.

decadent version of mac & cheese. My Dad and his chef got together and decided that the king of all crustaceans should have a creamier ocean to swim in. Thus Lobster Macaroni & Cheese was born. Table: Mock up your Thanksgiving table. This is another task that’s best done several weeks in advance. Pull out a sampling of all of the dishes, glasses and linens you expect to use and set a couple of places at your table. While you’re at it, remember to take a count of each element. This will give you a clear idea of how the tabletop will shape up. And you’ll have plenty of time to find and order new accessories as well as any replacements needed. Atmosphere: It’s important to think and plan beyond the table when setting the stage for your celebration. From candles, hurricanes, and flowers to background music and over-head lighting, setting the tone of your celebration is achieved through the details. Pull the outside in by mixing natural autumnal elements like pinecones, pressed leaves, and pumpkins with fresh cut flowers. Dig in: Whether you plan to begin dinner with a prayer or a secular welcome, it’s helpful to think ahead about how you want to start the meal once you and your guests are seated. A warm and appropriate toast includes offering a few words about what you are grateful for. And don’t be afraid to give your guests the opportunity to express their thoughts as well. After all, a formal holiday observing thankfulness only comes once a year. Finally, the best advice remains this: Just don’t forget to turn on the oven!

he sun beats down on my skin as I walk to the entrance of the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. It is a February afternoon, but the Texas sun is

preparing Texans for her unruly summer-rays. My partner and I are on a Valentine’s Day art tour of Houston. I usually do not play the part of roadie, Marco is part of the El Paso band The Dirty River Boys, but when a fancy Valentine’s meal and a tour of one of the most, if not the most, vibrant art scenes in Texas is included with the tour run, I gladly put on my best Penny Lane.

November, 2013

A mentor of mine told me about the Rothko Chapel during a poetry workshop. We were discussing the poets Federico García Lorca and Rainer Maria Rilke. Both poets are united in their use of combining spiritual influence to earthly experience. For Lorca it is duende, the fairy goblin creature of Spanish folklore, and for Rilke it is the angel, of which he refers to as ‘the wicked river god of my blood.’ The chapel came up during the discussion of the earthly and the spiritual because of the Rothko Chapel artist’s, Mark Rothko, intentions of creation. His hope was that the chapel, and the fourteen paintings inside, would become ‘a holy place open to all religions.’ Stepping from the outside sun into the octagon shaped building is a, truly, divine experience. I feel the instant need to breathe slowly, and quietly. I think I can hear my partner’s heartbeat combined with the other six heartbeats of people sitting in the chapel. The beat and our breath are the only sounds we cannot force into silence. Oceanic exhales and pulsing blood become a type of communal hymn. A group of strangers, from all walks of life, are one in a strange and surreal way. The spiritual desire and the ritual against the body are united. The black hued paintings feel ominous, yet awe inspiring. They force me into humility and I welcome the push. I want to contort my body into the yoga position child’s pose, but I am too self-aware. I sit for as long as I am able to keep my mind present, wishing I could hold out for a few more hours. In those hours I know I could find Lorca’s duende and Rilke’s angel. 126

their mantels. “Gravity” is possibly one of the most frightening, spellbinding, tender, horrifying films I have ever seen. I was first attracted to the film as it is written by and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, who brought amazing films to life including “Pan’s Labyrinth,” the beautiful study of fantasy amidst a frightening world of fascism during WWII in Spain. His dabbling in Harry Potter Adventures and other masterpieces makes one look up when his name is attached to a project. Yes, I enjoy Sandra Bullock, and although strong in “The Blind Side,” not sure it was an Oscar-worthy performance. I will always be on the fence with George Clooney. He always manages to surround himself with the best of Directors, Producers and co-stars. His scripts are wonderful, and again, 128

November, 2013 whereas I strongly believe that “Argo” was not the best film last year, there he was on the stage at the Kodak Theater claiming his Academy Award for Best Producer. He has a couple of them now. Who would have thought this would happen when he was Mrs. Garrett’s Grandson on “The Facts of Life?” no wait... “Sisters?” So here is a film starring these two actors.. and only these two actors, so I figure that Alfonso Cuaron will save the day. He does, for the most part, as this is again, such an unbelievable motion picture. Make sure to see this film on “a bad hair day” as you will walk away saying to yourself, “well it could never be as bad that,” and here’s why....

I had an awesome moment once at the Dome

Dr. Ryan is on her first Shuttle mission.

he was, just sitting and dining alone. Cormac

Astronaut Matt Kowalsky accompanies her. Together, they forge more than just a cosmic bond by virtue of where and how fate has brought them together. They are making routine repairs outside of their ship, when a destroyed Russian Satellite falls to pieces and knocks their shuttle out of commission. Once their vessel is completely beyond repair, the two are left in a gravity free drift to where? The more they talk, the more they communicate, the more they feel fear, and the more oxygen they lose. This is where the cinematography is so incredible, and brings 3D to a whole different light and gives one a new perspective and respect for the process. Cuaron tells a powerful story, where silence is indeed golden. The sense of immediacy feels so real, and very unlike, say, for instance, “2001 A Space Odyssey.” The additional beauty of the film lies in the fact that it is only 90 minutes long. The film could not have been a second longer, as one’s nerves could not possibly bear that extra second. Your pulse will race and you will also need to bring tissues... Enough said. As awards go, “Gravity” has to be on the top of the heap. As for performances, I can honestly say that Bullock is most deserving. Stay tuned.

He was kind and gracious and it was a wonderful moment to actually speak to such a literary giant. The new film, “The Counselor,” is his first original screenplay. Ridley Scott directs the film about a lawyer played by Michael Fassbender, who represents drug lords in yes, our region, and somehow manages to meet and do business with all of the wrong people. The film was not available at press time, but comes tailor-made with an incredible cast including Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem. Although the film references “El Paso” throughout, only “pick up” scenes were shot here, and none of the stars shot any scenes in our fair city. There is a picture of Brad Pitt showing the headlines of the newspaper, but that is easy enough to create. I look forward to seeing yet another movie that will surely be a contender. 129

Successful Executives Display Professionalism

| By: Joann Wardy |

What do successful executives do? They: – Do not reprimand or correct employees in front of others. – Acknowledge a job well done and give credit where credit is due. – Are open and listen to any suggestions or improvements that may be made in the workplace. – Keep all promises. – Compensate employees well, both monetarily and with time off. – Are always professional both in language and behavior, never causing embarrassment to others. – Stay upbeat and positive. – Avoid showing favoritism.

As in all situations, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are magic words that go a long way.

balance attainable when I follow some simple suggestions.

Be content to be on a journey. One of the reasons people get swept off by their spiritual practices is because they experience an imperative motive to “arrive there” – the place where they will find content and be sated spiritually. An authentic spiritual seeker will not arrive anywhere. The point is to enlist in a lifelong process of development and growth. Keeping this in mind may help us feel better about decompressing, because there is nothing to rush towards – we are already at that place, smack-dab in the middle of the formula, which is precisely where we want to be. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Balance November, 2013

Spiritual knowledge solely is not sufficient.

As beneficial as it can feel to at last be

engaged in our spiritual self, we also need to fortify and systematically reinforce the other connections in our lives.

Maintain spiritual balance by spending time with the ones we love, and build friendships outside of our spiritual circle. Don’t worry

if your friends and family don’t share the same spiritual beliefs, most of mine don’t

and we still manage to have zany and meaningful times.

Less is more.

Instead of trying to absorb heavy quantities

of spiritual knowledge in a brief time period, make it a target to begin with bite-sized pieces.

Relish spiritual wisdom and insights like they were made up of pieces of delicious chocolate. Allow them to hang around on the

tongue (in our mind and spirit). Take your time absorbing them.

Just like consuming a meal, we will savor the knowledge we acquire much more whenever time is spent absorbing it instead

of gobbling it down so quickly that it cannot be tasted or enjoyed.

The longer we continue on a spiritual path, the

more at ease and balanced we will become. Try something different this year and keep balance between the spiritual self and the rest of our life.

We have all heard the term “There are two sides to every story”. Or perhaps you find someone to be particularly moody or even “two-faced”. Like with everything in life, there is the good and the bad: Love and hate, peace and war. The same applies to all of the astrological signs - you have the positive and negative side of each. lovers of all ages. Beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday evening, and ending at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, guests can enjoy a variety of activities. Making a zoo animal’s meal is one of the favorites; you can help put together a special diet to be fed to the animals the next day. Guests can also help to make enrichment, which is something for an animal to play with (and often destroy). This might include unusual food, crafts, or puzzles for the animals to solve. In the evening you can get a special tour of the nocturnal section of the zoo, to see all the animals that are asleep during

normal zoo hours and peek in on their activities. Late

that night you can enjoy a campfire and marshmallows for roasting under the stars, weather permitting. When guests wake up Saturday morning, they will be treated to a special tour of the aviary before the www.thecitymagazineelp.com

zoo opens to the public. There they will meet a zookeeper and get to see how the birds are fed, and observe how active they are first thing in the morning. Since all sleepovers have a maximum number of 25 people, guests are ensured a personal, exclusive night at the zoo, without crowds of people around. “The sleepovers are wonderful because guests can come see our animals when no one else is around,” Zoo Educator Cheyenne Garcia explains, “It really makes it a special, private event.” The Zoo provides cots for their sleepover guests and all the materials they will need for the activities. Tickets are $30 per person, regardless of age, and $27 if you are a Zoo Member. November’s sleepover is scheduled for the 8th, but if you miss the sign up December 6th is the next scheduled sleepover date. You won’t want to miss this wild night at the zoo, so make sure to sign up early! www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Investor Performance v. Investment Performance

A

t a recent industry conference, the keynote presenter made a very interesting comment, especially in light of our current volatile market conditions, which is the basis for my article this month.

He pointed out that one of the most successful mutual funds and fund managers of our time were Fidelity Magellan and Peter Lynch, respectively. He also noted that during Mr. Lynch’s tenure running the fund, it averaged over 12% annual returns. While this is a well-known fact among industry folks, what was surprising was the fact that the average investor in the fund during the same time period averaged less than 2.5%! How could that be? Upon closer examination, it becomes clear that the average investor made decisions based on emotions that caused them to sell low during downturns in the market and buy high after the recovery was in full swing. The following are 5 steps you can implement to help guard against making the same mistake. 1. Seek the help of a trusted advisor
