Editor-in-Chief

O

ne of the many things I love about El Paso is our weather—in particular our seasons. Just when we’ve gone through everything “summer” in our closet, fall sets in: light sweaters in the morning and evening, summer sandals are exchanged for suede open-toes and peek-a-boo

ankle boots. If you’re one of the women who feel pressured to have a light tan (often out of a

bottle), that pressure is suddenly removed and the natural leg is expected. Just as we change our

wardrobes from season to season, the change of fall color can also transition in our homes to reflect the cooler weather. The bright-colored summer pillows can be replaced with fur pillows (faux for those who choose faux, we don’t judge and neither should you), and a few blankets can be tossed around to create texture, warmth and invoke a cozy feeling. Floral arrangements can change to warmer colors as well … try placing them in wooden boxes and crates while adding a touch of fall leaves. Bundling sticks and branches together and placing them in front of the fireplace is another easy fall transition, since natural elements bring in just the right amount of seasonal change. Other simple changes, like changing candles from crisp white tapers to larger amber-colored candles wrapped in cinnamon sticks, or chaiscented candles, bring seasonal aromas into the room. Try transitioning your bedding into a darker color palette or switching out cotton bedding fabrics for velvets and heavy-textured knits … a chic designer trick to warm your room. While the evening temperatures are moving towards the cooler side, we still have some warm evenings left ahead of us, which means it is not too cold yet to stop entertaining outdoors. Consider entertaining near an outdoor fireplace to generate some warmth and make your space cozy, remembering to use fall-inspired place settings and décor. When the evening air begins to give your guests a chill, scatter warm blankets on outdoor armchairs for everyone to use. For everything there is a season, and in the El Paso region, fall is one of our nicest indoor-outdoor times of the year. I encourage you to slow down, enjoy the sunset with a nice glass of wine or a hot cup of coco, take a deep breath and remember: this is the calm before the true winter weather. The holiday season will be upon us before we know it and time will speed up again. Cheers to beautiful sunsets and sitting on the back porch as you flip through this fall issue of The City Spaces.

daily Sunday afternoon of browsing for home décor ideas at various open houses throughout El Paso, this home as the very last stop on their tour. Upon arrival, the owners found quickly that what lied past the front exterior of the home was a complete and total unsuspecting treat that would since change everything. In fact, the day’s agenda for gathering ideas and inspiration for their existing home led the owners to instead pursue the acquisition of this incredible home, soon making it their very own. A complete remodel immediately followed the purchase of the 8,000 square-foot, four-bedroom, five-bathroom home and except for the exterior adobe walls, the entire home “came down” to undergo a

massive renovation. The project took nearly an entire year to complete and was, clearly, worth every bit. Today, the home’s façade continues to elude the eye for the unexpected and breathtaking view that awaits beyond initial entry into the home. Upon entering the alluring space, one immediately and quite pleasantly meets with an exquisite ten-foot, Zen inspired waterfall that creates a foyer-like area that serves to divide it from both the formal dining and sitting areas in the front area of the home. Beyond that point, one quickly comes face to face with the stunning artwork that adorns the walls of these rooms, truly conversation-worthy, each and every eclectic piece telling a story of its own. As the owner goes on to elaborate on each painting, sharing details on where it was purchased, the artist behind the piece and her inspiration for bringing the piece home, it’s clear that this is one, meaningfully inspired home. What’s more, both rooms flourish with bright hues and unique furnishings, such as the vividly colored, large-scale vases and uniquely life-sized candles, that lend to the artwork; every single detail complimenting the other beautifully and bursting with color. 23

Following these artful rooms, one enters a vast living area that begins with a pool and shuffle board table that surely spells family fun and entertaining at its best. This is only the beginning as when you move along, the home now reveals the most telling part of the renovation: the incredible, floorto-ceiling accordion windows inspired by a past Hawaiian hotel accommodation on the owners’ trip to the islands and that, when fully extended, reveal the calming, tranquil body of water resting directly behind the home. In fact, it’s considered the only natural lake in El Paso due to its natural well and, according to the owner, was once a rowing site for area boy scouts some 40 years ago, and still breeds both catfish and carp fish in its warm waters. The small deck at the foot of the beautiful lake and at the tip of the home appeals to the senses and undoubtedly, makes for one of the most relaxing spots there overlooking the water. The outdoor area also houses a sleek and stylish drop pool that gives the mesmerizing illusion of spilling into the backyard lake. The opposite and shallow end of the pool holds a couple of the contemporary Philip Stark chairs that surround the area, and sit comfortably under an enormous yet inviting umbrella that shades the wading area of the pool from right above. In fact, the entire backyard is comprised of cozy sectionals with loungers and other stylish outdoor seating, as well as an oversized hammock and chaise lounge chairs placed strategically under two large trees and that all together, make for the perfect place to enjoy the outdoor setting of this incredible home. An extension of the full-comfort enjoyment one finds when stepping into the home’s backyard is the beautifully-tiled outdoor gourmet kitchen complete with cooking area, wet bar and sitting area that’s perfect for outdoor entertaining. Add to that, the scenic pine trees adorned with their handsome and rustic pewter lamps. Noted as the owner’s favorite trees, these amazing pines span nearly 50 years at the home, lining the entire rear of the backyard and magically looming over the entire home. Then there’s the gorgeous palm trees strategically placed throughout, while large plants in stylish oversized pots lend to the lush greenery both inside the perimeter of the home’s opening to the yard and beyond. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

place to find comfort, a place to entertain loved ones, a place to raise a family—all of these are goals that Susan and John Hjalmquist bore in mind when creating the home of their dreams. Goals that while unquantifiable, were of immense value.

The home, inspired by an unmistakably Tuscan design, exudes comfort at first sight. With the refined color palette of creams

and browns that travel throughout the home, this home rejects the make every room different mentality that many people have when attempting to put together a home. The familiarity of each room, when compared to the last, is a testament to the vision that the homeowners had when piecing together their home—an unrestricted space with the ability of being traveled through with ease. With help from Lori McCuaig from LMC Design Group, the homeowners made this vision a reality. “We wanted an open house, it was important to have it open, with tall ceilings and to have a lot of windows … we just wanted light,” said Susan. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Comfort Among the Light

Fall, 2017

An exceptional feat of the home’s design is its ability to reflect luminescence throughout, maintaining the aura of lightness that the homeowners intend to showcase. The interior’s pillars direct light to the walls, which in turn illuminate the exquisite furnishings, most of which consist of a cohesive yet tastefully eclectic mix. Along with the furniture, the homeowners have managed to gather a collection of art from their travels to display in their home. “As my boys grew up, we started traveling more and we were able to get more things for our home. Collecting art was something we had to grow,” said Susan. In a very apparent manner, the art gathered functions as an abstract travelogue that the homeowners can reminisce over. “We’ve lived in this home for fifteen years and put our heart and soul into it.” The kitchen is Susan’s favorite room in the house and it serves a very specific purpose. The space contains unique features such as a functional fireplace directly behind the stove. The kitchen is also home to a massive iron pot rack, one of the very first pieces that the homeowners included in their home. It was important that the kitchen be a central point with visual access to the rest of the home. “It is my favorite because it’s open to the family room and when raising three boys, it was important that I could always be in contact with the family.” The home boasts an outdoor loggia—a preferred place to lounge and enjoy a book pulled directly from their home library. The back yard of the home provides the spectacular ambience felt through the valley, one of which can also be enjoyed through a dip in the pool. When it comes down to the overarching purpose of their home, it is ultimately a place where comfort and entertainment meet. “Our house is about family, hospitality, friends,” said Susan. Through years of refined taste and the joy of having had a family raised in it, this home’s story is one that can only be remembered through comforting and loving memories.

verything [in the house] means something,” says homeowner, Gloria Dick, about her and her husband’s four-bedroom and fivebathroom home. When you’ve spent the years raising three daughters in a home, the memories are sure to be as abundant as the wall space and as priceless as the family heirlooms that sit inside. It is a space that has been filled with love, knee scrapes and the patience that comes with raising three daughters. The home itself is open. All of the large living areas throughout the home open up to the outside, creating a nice balance with nature. “It’s as open or private as you want it,” says Gloria. She goes on to describe the home as “purist.” There is natural wood and natural elements throughout the home, and the light that pours in is a rich addition to the warm feeling that has been organically created. Most of the rooms feature sofas or seats with hues of orange or brown leather. They are just as inviting as they are aesthetically pleasing in their spaces. The art that sits behind them are the specially gifted pieces from Africa given to Gloria from her in-laws. The home and the furnishings www.thecitymagazineelp.com

inside it are an accumulation of special things from their lives. Gloria mentions that the two twin beds in a spare room were David’s when he was younger. There is also a beautiful dark-wood piano that is a family heirloom. These simple touches add a personality and individuality to each room. You could try to replicate the décor with any online store, but you won’t be able to create the same feeling that the homeowners have created. Looking through the pictures, you can see that the home has been carefully curated to fit the nature and mood of the homeowners. They have focused on it being an open and inviting area because of the entertaining that they like to do. “It’s a great entertaining house,” says Gloria. The large bar area echoes that sentiment. It has the counter space and bar stools to accommodate the family and friends that the homeowners have had over. It is also conveniently adjacent to the large dining room table. The exposed brick in this area also lends to the more rustic and natural feel of the home. Along with the bar, the home being an open space and so easily accessible to the outside, is also a great feature for entertaining. Of course, the large open kitchen doesn’t hurt either. Made entirely of wood, with countertops in a correlated hue, it is definitely a special kitchen. It was made to host and feeds many mouths. This is exactly the kind of home you can expect in El Paso, so don’t be surprised. With its great design and natural elements that bode well in our desert climate, this open house is a testament to what other homes should be in our area.

e can’t always get what we want—but we can certainly fake it. This can be true in almost every aspect, but especially when it comes to our homes. If you find yourself scrolling through Instagram,

or flipping through these pages, and finding something featured that you

really love, but don’t have the means to get, consider it a sign to fake it a

little. Treat yourself to the good life, even if it’s a little faux. If you’ve fallen in love with exposed brick walls, but your house doesn’t have that, brick wallpaper is an easy fix. Simply using paint to create a metal look somewhere in your home, or a textured wall for character, could be the solution to creating the looks you’ve fallen in love with. Maybe the wood beams you saw aren’t even wood beams (because that’s a thing you can do). Faux finishes aren’t a new thing, but we tend to forget about the possibilities they inspire. Create the looks you want and the home you’ve always dreamed of without breaking the bank or having to source things out from exotic places. Flip through and find your faux possibilities.

here is something to be said about walking into a well-decorated and thought-out space. It makes the space feel complete, whole, inviting; it makes you want to stay awhile. This is what I’ve found with Salt + Honey Bakery Café. Just like the atmosphere, it’s hard to describe what exactly Salt + Honey is in just a few words. It is a bakery, a breakfast and lunch spot, a place to grab a coffee or—if you’re in the mood—a beer or wine. It is also a place to relax or get some work done. Upon walking in, you are greeted with the original white honeycombed tile of the 1922 building, a bright and welcoming atmosphere and the perfect shade of teal splashed against the walls. The original brick is also on display, giving a peak into history and a sense of the industrial look that the owner, Maggie Asfahani, was looking for. Along the bricked wall on the left-hand side, two larger tables—for bigger parties—are sandwiching a living room set consisting of a large tan leather couch (perfect for photos), a simply stated rug, a wooden coffee table and two modern chairs. It is something you have probably seen on your Pinterest or Instagram feed. This section is quite literally honeycombed off—two tall honeycomb shelves are used as dividers—one from the bar and the other from the entrance. It is a tasteful nod

Since Maggie had dreamt this for years, her passion and vision was very clear. “Maggie had a certain aesthetic that she wanted: a midcentury French café, and [we made] that more modern with the chairs and even the lights,” says Sammy on how easy it was to collaborate with Maggie. “I had an idea of what I wanted and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to have traveled a lot so I had kind of absorbed from the places that I have gone or [from] Instagram accounts with a specific aesthetic in mind. Then I would see those in real life, especially when I went to both England and Australia. [Sydney] has a very robust brunch culture, it’s very summery. It’s very LA, but even more relaxed,” says Maggie. “We actually had customers that came in from Sydney and they told us it reminded them so much of home,” Maggie adds proudly.

The food that is served is not to be overshined by the interior design, though. From the baked goods to the lunch items, everything has a mixture of flavors that your taste buds will greedily beg for. Maggie tells me she does have a flavor profile that she tries to stick to for her recipes. “Fresh, comforting, slightly Lebanese,” responds Maggie with a laugh. “It comes from me being Lebanese but also growing up on the border, and also having traveled a lot.” Though the construction process took about a year, it has all been worth it in the end. The history of the building has been restored and now a new layer of history can start as part of the Five Points area. “If it weren’t for Christina [from Joe Vinny and Bronson’s] … she’s the one that brought the spotlight for everyone to come back. I really feel that they were the pioneers in seeing what the area was and getting people excited to come to Five Points. And the more businesses pop up, the more people will be attracted to the area and it’ll be more business it’ll be for everybody and more success for everybody,” concludes Maggie. So, find yourself surrounded by friends, or in a corner of solitude with your book or computer, and enjoy the many delicious local things that Salt + Honey has to offer. Most likely, you’ll see Maggie in the back, baking something great (and slightly Lebanese) for you to eat. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

he El Paso climate can be a healthy lawn’s worst nightmare.

The cost of watering, fertilizing, and the time consumption

of mowing, combined with the fact that it sometimes simply

doesn’t look good, can be a real turn off for homeowners looking to elevate the appeal of their home. Because of this, homeowners are turning to synthetic lawns. Nationally, synthetic grass for landscaping is growing an estimated 10% to 15% each year and is quickly gaining ground to becoming the preferred alternative method for home landscaping. Throughout the years, synthetic lawns have evolved from a shoddy imitation of its live counterpart to a viable competitor. Albeit with faults of its own, synthetic lawns are more commonly used in hot climates with negligible amounts of regular rainfall. Therefore, turf that is not in a shaded area will absorb more heat than real grass, limiting the amount of activity that natural grass is often acquired for. If a lawn serves a purely aesthetic purpose, then this should not be a worry. Environmental impact must also be considered when weighing the pros and cons of synthetic grass. There is a variety of padding options, the most common and popular being one made from the rubber of recycled tires. This process keeps the tires out of landfills. Research of long-term effects of this process is limited, so the effects of this kind of filling are widely unknown. Alternatives to this style of padding is available, however. Nevertheless, synthetic lawns require no insecticides or herbicides, and there is appeal in the resourceful method of recycling as well as the amount of water that is conserved. Synthetic lawns, although requiring much less regular maintenance than real grass, still requires attention in order to maintain its appearance year-round. Unlike real grass, synthetic lawns, because of the lack of

soil, do not break down natural debris such as fallen foliage and the regular pet activity. In order to maintain an appropriate level of sanitation, you will still need to pick up or hose down the lawn to remove debris in order to avoid health hazards. Some synthetic lawn services, however, have adapted to pet’s needs and include drainage systems in their turfs, allowing fluids to seep through to the soil underneath. At first glance, the price of synthetic grass may appear steep, even when not including the cost of grass removal and ground preparation. However, when taking into account its longevity and hyper-realistic appearance, it soon begins saving the hundreds of dollars that you would otherwise be spending up to 25 years. The synthetic grass also comes in a variety of shades, lengths and densities, so the options are abundant if you’re worried about a limited choice. Synthetic lawns’ rising popularity in home landscaping can make sense for a lot of people looking for an alternative way to decorate their home. With this information laid out, a decision for whether fake grass can be a real solution and good fit for you and your lifestyle should become easier to make. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

s El Paso’s morning sun projects yellow light over the Franklin Mountains, a blinding glare reflects off our city streets. There’s hustle and bustle as kids make their way to school and adults race to work. But beyond the busy bodies, our desert plants are waking up and stretching to grasp that gleaming light. With their strong presence, cacti have become a staple in southwest landscape and in-home design. For anyone looking to add seasonal color to a naked room, a lonely windowsill or to dress up an office space—but can’t keep up with maintaining large outside plants— The Potted Cactus is your answer. Inspired by a book by Debra Lee Baldwin, Armando Landin learned about the nomenclature, origin and care of plants. He began doing research and decided to start selling the plants as a hobby, when he noticed the success of his sales he decided to expand and prioritize this business. Launched earlier this year, The Potted Cactus is providing El Pasoan’s the opportunity to make a point with their prickly plants. Through wanting to share his love for El Paso’s desert, cacti and succulents, Armando made his dream come true and is sharing it with the community. Planted, grown and maintained in Armando’s backyard greenhouse, The Potted Cactus ensures high quality cacti and succulents for sale. El Pasoans can choose from a diverse selection of haworthia and euphorbia succulents, crassula, aloe and more. The plants are raised in the greenhouse from seedlings and are later given a home in the unique planters that Armando finds and customizes to each plants needs. “Many of the succulents that we have naturally grow baby plants next to the parent plant. So we periodically pluck the babies out and give them their own pots until they are properly rooted,” explains Armando. For very small plants, Armando lets them grow in his home with shelving and lighting and later moves them into the greenhouse when they are older and ready. In accomplishing, as what Armando defines as an “eclectic style” for each potted plant, Armando takes on a detailed process to assure the plant is adjusting to its home. First, Armando uses a hand-mixed soil that is specifically made for succulents and cacti. He then hunts for all of the pots for each plant. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

“From surprise finds at mainstream retailers and local shops, to rummaging through vintage and secondhand stores, we find perfect containers practically anywhere. He also adds a

top dressing to protect the soil from drying. Lastly, Armando says he’ll watch the plant for a few weeks to make sure it is adapting to its new home before being sold. By the time the plants have gone through that process, Armando loads them up and takes them to El Paso’s Downtown Artist and Farmers Market where The Potted Cactus sells every Saturday. Armando hopes El Pasoans achieve that vision they have when

“We hope to keep our momentum going and eventually have a retail space in El Paso, with both an outdoor and indoor area, while keeping the same level of quality we’ve been able to achieve already.” With little maintenance, unlike traditional ornamentals, potted plants are hard to match because of their unique and intriguing characteristics. to get some fluff on you and enjoy this colder weather. Don’t hesitate to grab that extra slice of pie or that extra cup of hot chocolate because cozy living and eating good is the name of the game when it comes to fall. Nothing beats a braided brioche filled with spiced pear and tangy goat cheese. All coming together with almond paste, it’s a homage to the most festive season of all. Pear tends to lose some of its natural flavor when cooked, so we’re bringing it back to life with a perfect balance of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cardamom. Matching Dishes

Single color dishware is out. On the shelves

of most home stores these days, if the plate

has gold triangles the “matching” cups may have gold circles. Mixing up the style and design, while sticking to a color scheme, is popular right now.

Tapestries Are Out Say it ain’t so! As someone has been meaning to get a wall tapestry, to find out that this bohemian trend is on its way out is a little disappointing.

White Walls Even though the seasons are changing into a colorful flurry outside, that doesn’t mean your walls need to sit it out. Rather than sticking to the white walls, that will just drop the temperature in your house further, paint your walls to reflect the change in yourself and embrace the warm, rich shades of brown, black, green and/or blush. Nothing brings life into a home like color.
