THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN
Those seeking the opulence and luxury of a coastal mansion may find their dream home far from any ocean—in the Coronado Country Club Estates, nestled in the foothills of the Franklin Mountains. With stunning panoramic views of El Paso, more than 10,000 square feet of livable space and a brandnew, top-to-bottom remodel, this property brings the contemporary style and elegance of a Miami or Los Angeles estate to northwest El Paso. Built in 1965, this sprawling, multilevel home boasts six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, two 3/4 baths and one 1/2 bath, a full formal dining room and formal living room, along with two multifunctional living spaces, a large kitchen with bar and pantry, game hobby room and much more. Skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout flood the home with beautiful natural light, making its stark whites and greys pop alongside deeper, natural wood accents and splashes of color in the decor. Marble travertine and light grey wood flooring cover the main rooms. The master suite includes a fireplace and full bathroom with huge mirrors, double sinks and redone cabinets, a large shower and spectacular desert views from its lush jacuzzi tub. Through the master bath, a stairway leads down to the left-wing lower level, featuring a fitness room, steam shower and wine cellar—perfect for a good workout and an even better cool-down after. On the opposite side of the house, are two spacious bedrooms at the end of a long, bright hallway. Another set of stairs leads to the rightmost lower level, with two rooms ready to customize—art studio, yoga room, man cave or bar. A massive kitchen includes a full gas range with hood and new tile backsplash, microwave and convection oven, commercial-grade reach-in

A marble travertine driveway leads to the property’s spacious, five-car garage, and a lush, green front and back yard wraps around the home, leading to another of its crown jewels—a heated in-ground pool and patio area unlike any other in El Paso. When the overhaul began, the house was a far cry from what you see today. Windows were broken; it needed reflooring, repainting and remodeling, yard work, new fixtures and beyond, all of which was finished in a six-month period. Within two weeks of relisting, the house had a handful of offers. “We came in and reimagined the property and gave it the vision it really needed,” said Realtor Ricardo Ramos. “You see homes like this on TV, on ‘Million Dollar Listings’ and shows like that, but never around here. It’s truly a special property, especially for El Paso.” For more info on this property contact Alexander Cordova-The Alexander Cordova Luxury Real Estate Group (915) 800-8396

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN
ECLECTIC
as it is remarkable, the home built by Ross Landers, noteworthy interior designer for the Sun City and beyond, proves that beauty and function can be artfully combined in any living space. In fact, the 35-year decorator’s craft is characterized by a well-honed science of color, texture and design—the home he calls his own best exemplifies this amazing talent. Built in May of 2018, Ross explains that the home was once an old SAE fraternity house for the nearby UTEP chapter. In fact, the house sits on what was once a volleyball court used for the fraternity’s enjoyment. Today, the home touts a sleek, contemporary design that is beautifully enhanced with captivating period pieces and worldly relics. On entry, following an exquisite foyer, is an open concept that defines a living area that extends from kitchen to formal dining room. The living area, which Ross refers to as the “great room,” is a collage of artwork and décor described as a “mishmash” of contemporary and period pieces, and is the area of the home where most entertaining is done. In this room, one finds the elaborate collection of Kutani Geishas, which is definitely an eye-catcher and just one aspect of the room’s intricate décor. Outside, the patios in the front and rear of the home are separated from its interior with complete floor to ceiling windows that lend to the fluidity of the space. In the evening, the walls are said “to disappear” and become one with the space when the evening lights permeate into the home. As Ross explains, “The reasoning for the patios is to create inside/outside expansion for a very small space.” Throughout this continuity, the entire area commands itself as a focal point from the impressive array of interesting pieces spanning various eras, and all thoughtfully placed. The artwork displayed is gathered from Ross’s travels in the country and abroad, and span international trade markets to estate sales, to even the simplest garage sale. A self-proclaimed “repo,” he has an impeccable eye for gathering items that will eventually make their debut in the home and says he tucks away his artful findings for just the right moment.

BETTER READ THAN DEAD
| By: HENRY CRAVER |
THE AMERICANS ROBERT FRANK What better way to honor late photographer Robert Frank than by buying the book that made him a legend? Frank revolutionized photojournalism with his “snapshot” aesthetic, which is still striking despite all the imitators. Even if you or your guests aren’t photo buffs, everyone enjoys seeing what America looked like in the 1950s. ALL AMERICAN ADS 60S JIM HEIMANN As you might have guessed, this coffee table banger gives readers a tour through the golden era of American advertisements—the 1960s. You’ll feel nostalgic, you’ll feel patriotic, and you’ll probably rewatch all of Mad Men. THE LIFE AND LOVE OF THE SEA LEWIS BLACKWELL I know you love the desert, so do I. However, sometimes we need water—like seriously big bodies of water. You guessed it, I’m talking about the sea. And when Peñasco just isn’t in the budget, there’s no better way to get there than with this collection of maritime photos and stories from around the globe. COP CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON Christopher Anderson has had a prolific year. Just about six months after launching his much acclaimed “Approximate Joy,” the New York Magazine photo extraordinaire has struck gold again with “Cop.” The photobook documents NYC’s finest through a collection of emphatic, close-cropped street portraits.

Walking out of the third bedroom bathroom or the kitchen you will be greeted with extremely tall ceilings with wood accents, bright windows and exposed brick which once was the exterior of the back casita. The rod iron banister and wood steps were all designed by Yari and specially created for this home. At the bottom of the steps is a huge dining/entertainment area fit for all your needs. The laundry room to your left is closed off by a barn door and has unique tile that will make you want to leave the door open all the time. Towards the back center of the room is a spacious bar equipped with a sink and space for a mini fridge, perfect for entertaining. The master bedroom is also located on the bottom level. On the right of the dining/entertainment space, is a barn door to one of the most beautiful, spacious master bedrooms. Walking in you will see a bright sunroom with doors connecting to the side yard and to the left is the opening to the once casita and now 845-square foot master bedroom. The ceiling has wood accents and there is also a fireplace. It was very important to Yari to keep the original wood accents and the fireplace as staples of the original home. The master is large enough to have a small sitting area as well. The master bathroom has a coastal feel to it, with blue, gold and white accents—like something from a beach town. The master bathroom also has a soaking tub and a walk-in rain shower. The master closet is extremely spacious since Yari transformed it from a single car garage.

Yari and her husband have a great eye for renovating homes. You can see how much love went into renovating this home: “It ended up looking as I had it in my mind. It took a full year to renovate the property but at the end, it's just perfect. The property has all the elements needed for a perfect place: formal and entertaining areas, spacious open chef and butler's kitchen, a large master suite, high ceilings with lots of natural light, comfortable side yard and beautiful front views! So far our best project!” This home was featured on “The Open House Show” on YouTube. If you just fell in love with this home, you’re in luck. This unique Kern home is currently on the market. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Interior designer Catherine Call transformed this 1970s ranch-style home into a modern and elevated space, which for her was a personal pursuit. Mary Lee and William Johns, Catherine's beloved parents, purchased the property in early 2019 from a family friend who had taught their children piano lessons throughout their youth. Catherine teamed with Dan and Errol Berry of Innovation Homes and got to work remodeling the four-bedroom home, finishing it in five months. "We have a tight connection to that house. All of my siblings went to the elementary school down the road, so it was a labor of love to restore the home. I grew up going to that house once a week my whole life," says Catherine. The finished look is unpretentious, cozy, open and pretty from all angles. I slip my shoes off and start brewing a cup of coffee just thinking of the plentiful amount of sitting space and comfy fur rugs. When it comes to the dĂŠcor, Mrs. Johns says she had a say but ultimately trusted her daughter's eye. "She would say 'mom, do you like this?' and I would say 'I don't know, what do I like?'" laughs Mrs. Johns. Straight into the heart of the home, my eyes immediately focus in on the unusual layering of wooden beads formed into a bohemian chandelier hanging relaxed over the dining room table. The table is dark wood with bulb legs and wooden chairs, aside from the two, cream, long-skirted ones at each end of the table. Upon catching a glimpse of the grass green leather

couch in the attached living area, it becomes clear that Catherine's design preferences lack neither quirk nor style. "I wanted to do a fairly traditional design but with a lot of whimsy because I didn't want it to be too stuffy," says Catherine. The kitchen feels quite spacious and welcoming with white bar stools nestled beneath the island for a more casual place to munch. Extended shelves carry large clear baking jars, while playful bowls sit stacked as either dĂŠcor or a chic bed for a warm cooked meal. Below the lowest shelf are oversized woven baskets for extra storage space. Catherine gifted her parent's irreplaceable reminders of their history in many rooms of the home. A gallery wall in the master bedroom, nearest the reading nook with a tree trunk lamp table, displays fifteen pieces of art given to Mr. Johns during his time in Ecuador as a Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints missionary. "Why go to bed bath and beyond and buy a piece of art that everyone has when you can create your own?" says Catherine. In the formal living area at the entrance of the home, above a salmon pink couch and a sea of plush pillows, hang pictures of the couple's favorite albums, including The Beatles and Carlos Santana. Call had the covers scanned and blown up for her music-loving parents. The living room also holds Mrs. Johns' piano; a nod to

the many piano lessons taken in this home by her children. The six siblings grew up with a passion for singing and playing instruments, and Mrs. Johns enjoys playing the piano to this day. In the study, the shelving mirrors that of the kitchen because the items atop are useful yet artistic. The books and office supplies sit neatly on the lower shelves, but the top shelf is my favorite. Catherine gathered multiple vintage cameras to create a retro 3D art installation paying homage to her father's time as a photographer in Ecuador. The cameras look as though they are about to flash a photo at any moment, and this fresh, experimental installation is possibly the most innovative part of the home. For

grandchildren, the Johns have a children's room with double bunk beds and a play table for them to enjoy. Even the laundry room is cozy due to its size and the addition of floral wallpaper. Coat hooks, a leather bench and spacious cabinets upgrade the space to more than just a laundry room, but a mudroom to throw off boots and jackets during wintertime. Catherine's love for this home and desire to make it an elevated and livable space for her parents is apparent in the customization and additions of comfort. Her parents enjoy their new home, cherish the artistic memorabilia that adorn the walls and look forward to the memories to come.

Memorabilia Art Personalized art is a timeless trend and a perfect project to work on this fall. Memorabilia art is simple, and you don’t have to be an artist to have this in your home. Gallery walls with personalized artwork, like blown-up covers of your favorite CD, are a way to customize your living room. Or you could dazzle up your shelving with a few past-time trinkets like vintage notebooks, cameras or your favorite records to create your very own personal art installation.
2
Umbrella Lamps The classic umbrella lamp with a modern twist is what will be in for lighting this fall. A chic metal lampshade will provide the warm glow our living rooms need as the temperature drops.
3
Italian Design Marble, stone and malachite will be fall’s favorite heavy weighted materials. We’re already seeing a rise in raw finish stone coffee tables and lamp bases, which free our space from airy summer trends and weigh us down with grounding and sturdiness.
Weightier Fabrics Knit blankets and velvet pillow covers are a no-brainer this fall because no one needs to get a new couch to stay hip. Shop for trendy cushion covers at stores like IKEA or West Elm. Throwing thicker textured additions on your sofa or bed is an easy way to transition for the seasons, rather than buying bigticket items like comforters or couches.

1
Airy Items Sheer curtains, throw blankets and items of the sort should be put in storage this fall. We are transitioning to colder months, so bring out the thick materials like faux fur, leather and velvet.
2
Coffee Okay, we know coffee will never be “out,” but this fall opt-out of your routine and try a different, yet healthy and equally soothing, mug in the morning. A matcha latte is full of antioxidants and is a great sub. Yummy turmeric-infused “golden milk” is a fall favorite to aid in a night of restful sleep. Pinterest is full of great recipes in case you’re looking to change up your coffee habit this season.
3
Beach Breezes and Sea Salt From candle scents to air fresheners, fall means embracing the warmth. Let’s try to break our summer fresh scent habit and aim for rich cranberry, romantic vanilla and yummy chocolate. You don’t have to obsess over pumpkin like the rest of the world, but colder seasons call for warmer aromas. Orange Speaking of pumpkins, orange is out. I say this with love and only because mustard yellow and rust are my faves for this fall. Smooth red-orange rust and burnt yellow elevate a space with sophistication, while keeping the warm tones of the changing leaves.
