THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

BOOK REVIEW | By: KRYSTA AYERS |

“A Touch of Farmhouse Charm” by Liz Fourez This is one of spring’s hottest trends this year: Farmhouse Chic. Get all the inspiration you’ll need to convert your home into the cozy and chic place you’ve dreamed it to be. This trend is all about clean country air, freshness, white open spaces (like the Dixie Chicks song) and coziness. Get ahead of your neighbors and start making some changes!

“Thug Kitchen” by Thug Kitchen, LLC This is a must-have cookbook if you entertain a lot or want to start eating healthy. This is filled with perfectly staged photos that make you want to cook everything inside. Spoiler alert: everything is vegan! But you and your guests won’t even know the difference! Protip: make the Sriracha cauliflower with peanut sauce the next time you have people over. This will be the cookbook you’ll keep on reaching for. “Color at Home: A Young House Love Coloring Book” by Sherry Petersik For a while now, coloring books for adults have been popping up everywhere, in many different themes. Since we’re on the subject of homes, why not color in some spaces while de-stressing from your workweek? With different rooms to choose from and different details to add color to, bring out your Crayola’s along with your creativity and get to coloring.

“Industrial Vintage Interiors” by Maria Eugenia Silva The aesthetics of past days are still strong in the interior design world. Of course you don’t want your whole house to look like a 1920’s movie set, but taking some one-of-a-kind pieces can bring together an entire look. Looking into decorating your business? Rustic wood, good estate sale finds and nostalgic pieces prove to be a good way to bring in a raw and inviting space. See how vintage is taking over.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Editor-in-Chief

A

fter a long winter, I like most of you hunger for spring time. The smell of the buds blooming, the warmth of the sun, and wondering what home project I’ll take on this spring. I spent so much of my past searching, dreaming for the perfect home. From Sunday drives scouting beautiful exteriors, to touring every open house within miles, to being the first at estate sales, not to shop, but

to feel the vibe of the home, look at the elements that make it unique and wonder if I could make it mine. Constantly remodeling, re-designing if only in my head. I am a detail kind of gal, spotting things that most would overlook. My passion is looking at what is and helping it become what could be. I have a love and appreciation for beautiful things. This issue we go beyond the walls of our office searching for homes in our region; that home we know will make you fall in love, or at least in like, and leaves you wanting at least one of their ideas in your home. We showcase a home living on the edge, with views of the valley and our sister city Juárez … views of the twinkling lights or orange sunset as it melds behind the Mesa. We celebrate the architecture of our great city—the downtown United States Post Office, a Henry Trost design over 100 years old that is still in use today. I’m excited this month to showcase part two of our four-part series of “On the Forefront,” with during and after photographs, as we were allowed to take this remodeling journey with designer Don Waters. This west side home made the cover this month with it’s simply stated, yet rich entrance. Magical things happen when the right designer and the right homeowner come together with the same dream. It is my pleasure to share my passion with you, the love of spaces. I hope you find the inspiration for the home you’re living in, the home you’re looking for, or simply the home you’re dreaming of.

s promised, this is the second phase of a four-part series of “On the Forefront

of Architectural and Interior Design.”

The reformation of this exemplary estate can be found in the Upper Valley. This

project began as a typical ranch style of the 1970s. The bones of the home remain but the enchantment took a life of its own. Designer Don Waters says, “Most homes either whisper their soul or scream their unusualness of purpose. We need to be able to hear both to give justice to great design.” He believes each home should be idiosyncratic. In the private hallway, headed to the private quarters sits a quaint bureau ornately embellished with hand-painted doves. The hallway is simply stated as it guards the seclusion of the private quarters.

If you’re privy to the invite into the master suite, you’ll be greeted by a customdesigned door displaying carvings inspired from the Spanish-European-Moreish design called Patrai. The grand hardware from Rocky Mountain styles the ornate handle with old world overtones. The door prepares you for the master chamber and the grandeur of the comfortable and accessible lush seating.

The ceilings are purposed after an imperial Chinese chop symbol in grass cloth in the master suite. Each one conveys an architectural sense, mirroring the custom nature of the space that it copies. Each of the designs in the bedroom are one of a kind with special finishes designed for this room by Waters Design Group.

The Moroccan-inspired vignette was an influence from Chinese dens of historical nature, where specific details of that time involved several secret pockets where private elements were kept (shhh ... those elements might not be legal in the United States). The fabrics and trims exude luxuries of the Moroccan period with details of hand-painted walls and gold inlays finished with the perfect touch of Turkish artistry. Relaxation and contemplation were the intent behind the inspiration. The lady of the house uses this space as her private sitting area to unwind, much like the Chinese.

Top cabinets have automated drop down closet bars that drop to floor level with a push of a button, allowing the lady of the house ease of fashion choice. Living on the Edge

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

ometimes, when a gorgeous home becomes available on the market, you wonder why the owners would ever leave. You’re also thankful for the change they chose so that you may now occupy the magnificent space, immediately picturing all of your belongings placed in their designated spots. That is the case with this multi-story house – It rests on the edge of the mountain, overlooking not just El Paso, but Las Cruces and Santa Teresa. An entertainment house to the core, the space, pool and views will garner approval from your friends and family. With its many one-of-akind features, the home is a vacant treasure waiting for its new owners. The main three-car garage entrance starts you off at the fourth floor of the home. Privacy is an immediate quality seen; the master bedroom and bath can be accessed here from a spiraling staircase not shared with the second floor bedrooms. A second spiraling staircase leads you up and down the rest of the house. The rest of the house is anything but mediocre. The owner tells me about the kitchen, located on the third floor, which is newly remodeled with pristine white cabinets that sit well with the light grey granite countertops. The peninsula houses a large sink and added counter space for cooking and displaying cheese boards for entertaining. He adds, “Off to the side there’s a double-latched door that leads you to an outside room.” This room outside can easily be a party room for you or your guests to enjoy. With a modern yet eclectic house like this, the appliances, features and foundation meets the overall upscale feel and timelessness of it all. The owner tells me that the original builders, from South America, created a home that was brilliantly white with a concept of overlooking the ocean. Though we don’t have ocean views, the city lights at night and vibrancy of the city substitute that. Scared about living on the edge of the mountain? The owner says, “The foundation is completely concrete and steel”, insuring durability and a stable home for years to come. Also taken as a protective measure, the European windows are double paned glass with an electronic shield to protect from strong winds often encountered on the mountain and also blocks out any light you might not want. “They just click open or closed over the window. It’s really neat,” says the owner. With all shields aside, the huge windows offer an unobstructed view out into the city. The interior offers newly re-varnished wood floors and new carpet. The plumbing has been re-done as well for the original bidets added in, a nod to the South American and European culture. Something not seen in every home, a work out room and sauna are also included in this multi-story space. Why leave when you have every amenity in your own home? You can release a good sweat by either using an elliptical or sitting in your sauna for a couple of minutes. Afterwards, you can head out into the newly rebuilt pool (again, overlooking the city) and enjoy the incredible weather that El Paso lends for the majority of the year. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Imagine being able to order a pizza or play your favorite Spotify playlist, or even know if you’ll hit traffic on your way to work, simply by voice command. Well, now you can with the voice activated speakers by Amazon, Google and Microsoft in the near future.

he first generation Amazon Echo ($179.99, amazon. com) and the second generation Echo Dot ($49.99, amazon.com) both have the same functions, the only major difference is about 7.5 inches in height. Simply by saying “Hey Alexa,” you can have her do so much

for you. Alexa is able to play music from a handful of different apps, shop on Amazon for you, order you an Uber for a night out of town, set a timer while you’re cooking, create a to-do list and countless other things. It’s really like having a little personal assistant and who wouldn’t love that? If you want to take it a step further, buying Alexa enabled smart products such as lights, switches, thermostats and others, you’ll (almost) never have to get up again. Alexa will switch on a lamp, turn off a fan and increase the temperature in the house, all with a voice command. It really can’t get any better than that.

he Google Home Controller speaker ($129.99, store.google. com) has many of the same features as the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot with a few differences. Google Home can connect to a TV and Bluetooth speakers, but only if they have Chromecast capability. It can translate words and phrases to

different languages, tell you nutrition information, let you know your flight information and also allows you to shop from a few select stores. All it takes is an “Okay Google” to get started. Google Home also has smart home compatibility, but they take it a step further with an IFTT function that allows you to set up phrases to correspond with certain actions. “Elvis has left the building,” could be used to turn off the lights in a room or “Get those kids off my yard,” to activate your sprinklers. As for the Harman Kardon voice activated speaker with Microsoft’s Cortana, very little information has been released besides the release day, sometime in 2017. But if it’s anything like the Google Home Speaker or the Amazon Echoes, it’s bound to be something incredible. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Cerused wood is an elegant feature for furniture and for bathroom or kitchen cabinets. And it goes with anyone’s personal style. So, whether you have a more modern feel to your home, are in touch with mid-century decor, or are more bohemian and eccentric, you can make the smooth transition into this trend. Stretching from St. Louis, Missouri to

San Francisco, California, the trail had been

pillar to post, delivering parcels. The Butterfield was as long as it was treacherous, spanning 2,975 miles of road, which had been beset by Indians and precarious tatters. Among its many stations, between 60 mile intervals, was a booming town at the tip of the Rocky Mountains. First known in Texas as Franklin City, El Paso was one of the Butterfield’s most crucial stations. Accompanied by the city’s dynamic progression into rail and mining advances in the 1880’s, more expeditious postal services were necessary to meet its high demands. With hopeful egress from rugged conveyance, the turn of the century in El Paso seemed to usher a new automotive carrier service. During this time, architects Henry C. Trost and James A. Wetmore established a new angle and inception of the West Texas town, designing Corinthian style structures with innovative reinforced concrete technologies. Among them, James A. Wetmore was the United States Post Office’s acting supervising architect who designed it to have a neoclassic style embodying solid limestone construction. Its iconic Greek columns percolated downtown avenues with a promise of postal order at the peak of Pancho Villa’s Mexican Revolution. Construction of the building began in 1916, and was made ready for occupancy in 1919 when it became known as the “Main Office Station,” serving the city’s dynamic growth. Not only had the footprint been strategically placed at the 87

corner of Mills and Stanton Street, but was also directly in front of the US Pacific Railroad tracks; the railroad offered swift and convenient service to the post office. Its majestic structure of limestone block facades, fluting offset columns, each coalesced with noble volute abacus capitols, encompassed under a metope cornice with running rings below a United States flag perched at the crown of the building. The office projected a lawful state of integrity for dexterous means of mail distribution. Designer James A. Wetmore spared no expense when he riveted in luxurious marble walls to a limestone core structure. Its elegant, dome stained glass allows sunlight to luster its mosaic floors, which compliment patterned bronze grills overlaying finely rowed postal boxes and secretary stations. Unmatched elaborate design carved a standard of integrity for El Paso’s mail distribution services. As El Paso flourished, more efficient means aided postal deliveries, and by 1930, airmail had been introduced. To establish a new generation in mail transportation, postmaster Henry Krump, and the committee in the chamber of commerce, had decided to tip it off with a special welcome. The crew had brought out the old stagecoach, each rider with their frisky horse, and trotted up to the trimotor plane. With grandeur, the riders hurled the mail to Postmaster Krump. Then, as quickly as they had appeared, they had about-faced into a cloud of dust, pioneering a future in airmail. The first cargo plane out of El Paso contained 17,000 letters and cards, weighing 216 pounds, and contributed to the economic boom the city was currently experiencing. On account of the rampant growth in the population and its demand, adequate lighting to the airfield had not yet been made available. Thus, airmail operations were confined to daylight hours and restricted evening landings in El Paso, where mail could then be dispatched by train to the “Main Office Station”. As the economy had ebbed and flowed, the United States Post Office had lasted over the course of 100 years in service and continues to stand strong in a modern generation. 92

Decluttering | By: GRACE THE PSYCHIC LADY |

here is an arch nemesis of Feng Shui—it is messy,

unorganized and chaotic. Its name is CLUTTER and it

must be destroyed! Clutter sneaks up on us, piling up over

time causing stagnant energy and eventually impacting our day-

to-day lives. Depending on where clutter is located in your home,

it can negatively impact certain areas in your life. Luckily, reducing

clutter has the opposite effect and is conducive to harmony and peace. Three basic principles to helping you get started with decluttering are as follows: love it then keep it, donate it if you haven’t used it in a year, and trash it if it is broken. Here are some tips in helping you achieve more peace and harmony in your home. First, do not get overwhelmed if there is too much clutter. As the old question goes, “How do you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time! Start with a single room—usually the master bedroom, as this is a place that should be your sanctuary and promotes rest and relaxation. Start with the closet and clear out anything unworn in the past year. Storage underneath the bed is bad Feng Shui as it blocks a good night’s sleep; The shoes under your bed can be the cause of your racing thoughts at night. Those of us who work from home can also be impacted by clutter. A cluttered desk or workspace can block our thinking and reduce our productivity. Keep these areas clear to stay on track with your current projects. 104

Hygge

Internet searches for this Danish rooted concept, particularly on Pinterest, have considerably boosted as of late and this trend is officially IN. Pronounced “hoogah,” the idea of Hygge embodies all things simple and cozy. It means warm foods, soft blankies, flickering candles and extra comfy everything. We can definitely cuddle up to this new trend!

Green Like recent celebrities, you will be on trend by adding a bright lime, warm emerald, or deep forest green to your home in any which way this spring. From wall paint to rugs, it will be everywhere. The color is also said to attract money and abundance! Who wouldn’t want that?

Copper 2016 was brass overload but now copper seems to be the popular choice. Whether the metal touch is as slight as a small light fixture, or used as a bold room center piece, copper is in.

Single Time Period Styles

It’s all about the mix and match. Quirky, futuristic looking pieces mixed with antiques give a room the look of diversity. According to interior designers, sticking to a single time period is so out.

Cheaply made or DIY Items Professional woodwork and items that require a great deal of skill to create will be invested in more heavily this spring. People are even resorting to high priced antique furniture because of the quality that has proved to last over time. Although precious and thrifty, a DIY or low price piece can wear away more quickly, which is more of a hassle in the end.

Three Ways to

Celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month

T

| By: JESSE MAYNES |

here’s a world of comfort behind each bite of a grilled cheese and I

truly feel for the ones who are lactose intolerant. You don’t deserve the

aftermath of indulging in one of the world’s greatest gifts. And because it’s a gift, we as humans made a month out of it. Welcome to National Grilled Cheese Month! So let the cheese ooze from between the perfectly buttered and grilled slices of bread. It never gets old, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get better. The game has changed and grilled cheese sandwiches have evolved into a culture of their own. Different cheeses, different breads, different fillings and flavors all added to create a unique GC (grilled cheese) experience. It’s almost impossible to go wrong when working with such a simple idea. That leads me to believe that maybe there’s no such thing as the perfect GC … so experiment! Not sure where to start? The City Spaces has you covered! Our first grilled cheese is a play on a dessert from the Midwest. Apple pie is often served with a piece of melted cheddar. We took that, threw in some Texas and made it even better. Jalapeno Waffles, sharp cheddar, granny smith apples, bacon and a side of maple syrup make this a contender in the race for the perfect GC. Secondly, there’s the French Onion GC. Respectively stealing the top layer of melted Swiss from a hot French Onion Soup, this sandwich will bring all the layers of a savory and deep flavor from caramelized onions into the perfect sandwich. Lastly, this GC is one of the best I’ve ever had. My good buddy, Chef Michael McCann, was gracious enough to share his upscale creation. Using ciabatta, three different types of cheeses are melted into, and in between, the bread. It’s as awesome as it sounds and we have the recipe. It ain’t easy being cheesy, so take these recipes and make the magic happen!
