Above the center island are two oversized half circle light fixtures that Julie Gereda calls her “brass drums” because banging on them is a family recognized call to dinner. A matching antique brass chandelier in the dining room is one of the few flashy pieces in the home, bringing a regal touch to the otherwise casual space. Although the home is on the smaller side at 3,100 square feet, the couple says that they have hosted two weddings here, successfully accomodating fifty to sixty guests at a time. The many windows and doors in the home create a feeling of vast openness, making it comfortable for guests and family alike. Indoor-outdoor living areas were essential to the couple when building their home, which is made evident by the impressive 25yard infinity pool that lies just past the outdoor sitting areas. One of my favorite spots in the home is the sunroom. It’s filled with cozy couches and magnificent scenic sights. You can only reach this room

BETTER READ THAN DEAD

DIVIDED SOUL DAVID ALAN HARVEY David Alan Harvey’s “Divided Soul” is a must have for any homeowner on the border. Comprising photos taken over the famed photographer’s long, illustrious career, “Divided Soul” captures the magic and diversity of our planet’s Latin diaspora. While picking it up, you might as well buy all of Harvey’s other collections—he’s that good. VOGUE: THE COVERS DODIE KAZANJIAN Originally released in 2011, this photo collection has since been updated every year. The latest edition, published last year, is no different than its predecessors. That’s to say that it’s beautiful. Nothing is more deserving of a spot on your coffee table, I promise. UNDERWATER DOGS SETH CASTEEL Lucky for us, this is just what it sounds like: a colorful photo collection of canines chasing toys under water. You’ll enjoy it, as will everyone else under your roof no matter their age—assuming you’re not cat people, of course. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: THE PHOTOGRAPHS LEAH BENDAVID-VAL There are probably good stories in the National Geographic, but I’ve never read one. That’s because, like most people, I pick up the esteemed magazine for the pictures, and nothing else. It turns out that all of the best shots have been synthesized into one big book. It’s like the travel channel, but way more sophisticated.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

On El Paso’s westside sits a custom home by Oeste Homes that will transport you to Santa Fe. The home is unique amongst its neighbors—the darker tan color, wood beams, and landscaping are rarely found in El Paso. The interior is inspired by Southwestern Pueblo architecture, consisting of: kiva fireplaces, vigas, metal work and wood features. Current owners, Gary and Shannon Thomson, fell in love with this 3,466 square foot home’s wood features, gorgeous courtyard, open concept and views of the Franklin Mountains. Built and styled with classic Adobe, the exterior encapsulates the New Mexican culture. Accents of wood beams and doors add definition to the home. Leading up to the house, you will be entranced by a desert scene with blooming cacti and shrubs. To add on to that, the beautifully crafted front door opens into a gorgeous and spacious courtyard. The courtyard features tall walls, a kiva fireplace, and lastilla vigas for the ceiling. This space is perfect for a warm welcoming entrance and entertaining. The double glass doors in the courtyard open to a spacious living area with a view. A kiva fireplace, niches and tile in the living area add to the New Mexican warmth this home displays. Looking up you will see lastilla vigas throughout the living, kitchen and dining areas. Lastilla vigas were used to support the weight of the roof to the load-bearing exterior walls. The Pueblo Revival style brought back lastilla vigas for ornamental use, as opposed to the structural purpose they had originally served.

AAA Home Inspections AAA Home Inspections is a family owned firm since 2013. It is a sister company to AAA Pest Control Inc., which was founded by Isaac Quezada’s parents in 1997. While Isaac was already a licensed termite inspector working closely with realtors, he became a licensed home and mold inspector to provide clients with a company that can offer an insight that no other service providers can. Isaacs’s main focus was to stand out with an inspection to better educate the home buyer, owner and realtor on a home’s condition before the purchase and or presale. “We understand that no house is perfect, whether it’s a re-sale home or a new home, but if we can help the client understand the properties’ conditions, it allows in a better educated decision of the home’s value pre or during sale. Further, we provide several free warranties included in every inspection to benefit and protect the clients even after the transaction has been completed,” explained Isaac. AAA is also the only company in the area who offer sewer scope and mold consultations. In addition to working directly with realtors, home buyers and sellers, Isaac and his team offer consulting services to real estate groups to better educate them in reviewing home, termite and mold inspection reports. www.thecitymagazineelp.com Photographed by: LUIS MIRANDA

Summer Pet Dangers and How to Treat and Prevent Them By: JANENE ROJAS

o most of us, summer means more fun outings with our furry four-legged family members. What it doesn’t mean is blistered puppy paws sizzling on the hot cement.

To keep pet safety at the forefront of our minds while enjoying the sweltering El Paso summer months, we have reached out to award-winning holistic veterinarian Dr. Gary Richter of the Pet Panel at Rover.com for the best ways to protect our pets.

Stinging Summer Every so often, Dr. Richter comes across a dog with a severe bee sting, but thankfully, he says the majority of bee encounters only lead to facial swelling. If your animal buddy's curiosity guides them into a stinging surprise, over the counter antihistamines like Benadryl will work just fine in soothing the pain. Some pups are allergic to bee stings just like humans, and in these cases, immediate medical care is necessary.

If you are unable to have a pool in your backyard due to limited space, you may also consider purchasing a water feature such as a fountain which can be easily found at most garden centers. A potent fountain is one that features moving water; such as a turning water wheel. Adding a light to the design is another energetic touch. You can also build a waterfall with river rocks with a pooled area at the bottom. Another way to add the water element is to make a small koi fish pond in the wealth sector. Koi fish signify abundance because in Feng Shui lore, the word “fish” stands for “abundance.” It is equally important that you keep the fish happy and healthy, as sickly fish are worse than having no fish at all. Water is a soothing and relaxing element whether you are swimming in a pool, sitting by the ocean, listening to a waterfall or are mesmerized by swimming koi. I hope you enjoy the days of summer and the benefits of Feng Shui in your life.

Organic Plant Fertilizer We’ve all seen the commercials; organic plant fertilizer is in! Organic materials in organic fertilizer foster growth of soil organisms, creating a healthier bed for roots to develop and grow. It strengthens the plant overall, and is not much more costly than regular fertilizer.

Shichimi Togarashi A delicious seven-ingredient spice is making its way from restaurants to our kitchen cabinets faster than we can say “ramen noodles.” This is a spice that not only enhances the flavor of seemingly perfect bowls of ramen soup at our local ramen houses, but was actually originally created as an herbal medicine. It’s citrusy, spicy and salty—a flavor trifecta.

2 Interesting Additions Subtle additions to the home that make you look twice are in. For instance, these “bamboo” hinges made of brass are bringing nature indoors with elegance. Another example of this would be the cute, yet odd weather predicting storm cloud spotted at Uncommon Goods online. The way the liquid in the glass cloud crystalizes is supposed to predict the weather. Cute and definitely interesting!

Water Bottles With the outrageous amount of waste we create every day, I’m surprised water bottles are still legal. Choosing water filters for faucets, in pitchers and in water bottles is the environmentally responsible way of tomorrow-land.

Things that Do Not Spark Joy Borrowing a note from Marie Kondo’s “Tidying Up” brilliant—and surely decluttered—mind, throw out under used items that do not spark joy. Whether it’s an old blouse that you were fired in, or a book that you can’t manage to force yourself to finish, make sure happiness strikes you when picking up any item in the home.

Shedding Fur-Babies Maybe I’m the last one on this train or maybe I’m about to change your life with this info, either way, your welcome. If someone had simply told me that I could avoid grey cat hair on every seat in the house by brushing Whisper with a kitty brush, I would have spent those $5 years ago. Summertime means shedding, so brush your fur-children often to reduce the mess.
