TV MANAGER Jessy Castañeda We had a young lady in the store a few days ago, who moved to El Paso about a year ago. She was in the market for some mattress sets for her home. When I asked how she heard about us she replied ‘I read an article several months ago in The City Magazine.’ She went on to say after reading our article, when the time came she was determined to give us her business!! Our AWESOME NEW customer remembered our story and our name! Thanks!! “The City Magazine” you guys are absolutely fabulous. ~ Annette Gomez, Oasis Sleep Outlet & Hot Tubs, El Paso I received a printed copy of your October issue. IT’S BEAUTIFUL! The quality is amazing. I am so impressed. And for Adrian’s design to be on the cover...gorgeous! Thank you so much from everyone at Otis College and especially from me. You and Adrian and The City Magazine make us all look so good. Happy Fall! ~ Sheri Mobley, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles

December/January, 2016

l Paso is many things. It is a downtown alive in the midst of a historic revitalization. It is hot summer days full of butterflies and

rainbows, cool desert nights, Franklin Mountains, Mexican food, amazing wine, artistic talent that should be applauded, shopping and restaurants that surprise any visitor, the friendliest of people, a metroplex that celebrates diverse cultures and it is, of

course, much more. It is often said that El Paso is the “best kept secret” in the United States. This is the time that we honor our “Best of The City.” I brought the concept of the “Best Of” event to El Paso in 2003 upon leaving a magazine conference in Chicago, where my publishing colleagues shared what positive energy their event brought to their city. The “Best of the City” awards have two purposes. First of all, the door money goes to the Boys & Girls Club of El Paso, and secondly, they honor and pay homage to those businesses that our followers voted outstanding in their field. Each year the awards have become more competitive and sought after. We know that by the increasing interest – 151,000 votes this year – and by the phone calls and emails asking for details, wanting to make sure that there isn’t a chance of someone finding a way around the voting. As the significance of the event grows each year, I feel the need to let our readers in on some of the voting process in order to squelch some of the naysayers, making sure the attention remains on giving honor to the winners, as well as those nominated. Just to be nominated is an honor, as the nomination means you are in the running. Our Weddings magazine was nominated for an Ozzie award

Rules are you must fall under the category of the nomination and you must be a legitimate business. Readers can nominate as many businesses as they chose. Nomination dates are announced on our social media during the month of October.

This list reflects the present, and the future of El Paso; it is at once a tribute to those voted on by our followers and a challenge to those aspiring to be nominated next year. What it will never be is static – as El Paso progresses, so does The City Magazine. We commit to you that we will remain partners with each of you, always celebrating the good things going on in the city. We also commit to continue to listen to what our readers are saying. By doing this we’ve managed to build an audience of people that like to share. They share with us and more importantly than that, they share with each other and with new El Pasoans who haven’t heard about us. When you’re in a business that has their “Best of The City” award on the wall, take a selfie and post it on our Facebook. We proudly present to you “The Best of The City.” I encourage you to take all that the city has to give.

An Interview With A Local Business Woman | By: NEISSHA KING |

Amanda Narvaez

Co-Owner, Los Colorines When Opportunity Presents Itself … Say Yes! When speaking with Amanda, it is apparent she has a heart for people and a love for the business. She expresses that if you are in the restaurant business, you are in the people business. Living in Juarez, Mexico, her journey to El Paso began about 18 years ago when a friend presented an opportunity. This opportunity was one of opening a restaurant in the downtown El Paso area. An equipped area was available in a local building and the owners were looking for that perfect fit. After much consideration, she and her husband decided since opportunity had presented itself, the answer was yes. Here, she shares that journey.

“Be Legendary, Not Ordinary.”

The biggest risk I’ve taken: Once saying yes to the deal, we only had three weeks to open. Opening a restaurant can be very expensive, and we didn’t have any startup money. Someone was kind enough to loan us the money and allow us to pay back through the cash flow of the business. When we moved in most of the equipment was already available, we still have a lot of the original tables and chairs from 1969. Since saying yes to the first opportunity, several others have come our way. We now own other locations throughout the city. Business lessons to remember: The business needs to be able to cover expenses. Perhaps three years to be successful, but definitely to cover those ongoing expenses. After 36 years of marriage, and 18 years of working with my husband (he’s the man behind the scenes, most times cooking up those delicious meals), you can work with your spouse and have a loving

MATTHEW ABRAHAM director of make up artistry

marriage. You may have to learn how to separate roles, family and business, but it can be done. You’ll never regret: Leaving my job. The business afforded me the opportunity to be with my kids. I’m glad that I’ve never: Closed our doors. In 18 years of business, we have shut our doors only once due to things beyond our control. We understand that our employees depend on their income. We cannot say because it’s slow, go home or don’t come in today. We appreciate

their commitment to the business and we honor our commitment to them. My every-day mantra: You must love the thing you want to do. There has to be love, commitment, patience and a lot of hard work. There are days I arrive and there might not be a smile on my face yet, but by the third hello there’s that smile. I love what I do, I love our customers. My greatest joy: The customers. They are very loyal and helpful. I can do this every day because of them.

s we sit in the comfort of his brother’s home, among the beautiful backdrop that is El Paso’s upper valley, Major General Juan G. Ayala reflects back on a lifetime of service to his country and what his plans are now. Having spent 36 years as a member of the United States Marine Corps, moving up

the ranks and ending his career as one of only two Hispanic two-star generals, he is now ready to begin a new life, a civilian life. “It will be hard to take off this uniform. It’s something I’ve done for 36 years, but it’s time now,” Ayala said. November 1 of this year was his first official day of retirement. This milestone was celebrated at a formal ceremony on October 23 at Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas. A ceremony of this magnitude is usually commemorated at a more prominent locale, however, it was at Ayala’s request that his retirement be celebrated in his hometown so that his family could attend. He has very strong family ties and values and recognizes that “you don’t do this without support and prayers from family,” he said. Having this special ceremony at Fort Bliss was an opportunity for Ayala to thank everyone who helped during his career. Not only was it momentous in that the retirement ceremony was held in his hometown, but dignitaries from

Paso Regional Office launched its Wish Ambassador Program. “I think this is another great opportunity for those wanting to volunteer but who do not necessarily want to grant a wish,” said Ana Haro, Volunteer Coordinator at Make-A-Wish North Texas. “It is important to train them on the terminology and that they know the mission by heart.” The Wish Ambassador Program is intended to prepare volunteers, wish children and their families to speak on behalf of the organization at special events, check presentations and

also creates an opportunity for wish children to practice speaking about receiving their completed wish within the past five years. “Having a wish child speak about their experience conveys the magic they went through,” Haro said. “People are going to be able to relate to that.” The trainings are offered through the months of November and February of each year. El Paso Regional Council member Shelley Mozelle, feels this is an important training to attend and share the power of a wish.

December/January, 2016 “Once people speak from their heart the message becomes clearer,” Mozelle said. Mozelle’s experience of working alongside a wish child, Christina, who battled cancer, is just one example of the reasons why she is so passionate about Make-A-Wish. “When it was all said and done, I realized that we only have one life to live,” Mozelle said. “It makes me feel like I am in the right place giving back to the community.” For wish granter Claudia Avalos, a volunteer who serves as a liaison between families and the staff, bringing happiness and joy to the families going through “their darkest moments” is what she experiences and wants to communicate to the community. “This training will help me better communicate the organization’s message,” Avalos said. “It is important that our community hear from this amazing organization and how it has changed the lives of our wish kids and their families.” Development Officer Natalie Eckberg said the program is a great opportunity for those to serve Make-A-Wish in another way. “Make-A-Wish is an incredible organization that makes a great impact on the families we serve,” she said. “For those who are looking for a way to share our incredible stories of hope and strength, the Wish Ambassador Program is a way to do that. We need ambassadors who want to share our mission with the wider community, because we are in need of partners who are looking to help us make that impact.”

Be flattering to the parents. This may sound silly, but try to compliment at least one thing while your there. You can compliment the home

I’m extremely proud that they are getting the attention they richly deserve.” To be considered, a school must complete an online application. utsiders so often describe the City of El Paso as a border

town. While this fact is true, to those who know the city better, El Paso is in many ways a bridge connecting

two intersecting worlds of art. Living on this line of comingling cultures, so often our city is privy to some of

Central and South America’s finest artists. Among them

is one of Mexico’s master artists, Leonardo Nierman.

Nierman, who specializes in both painting and sculpture, has

had his art exhibited all over the world. Most recently, El Paso played host to this phenomenal artist as he was commissioned to create one

of his sculptures as an initiative from the Consulate General of Mexico to El Paso. Titled, “Flame of Friendship,” the piece is a gesture that symbolizes the bond these two entities have shared throughout history and the hope of continued harmony they wish to share into the present. Our Editor-in-Chief, Shelley Mozelle, was asked to interview Nierman and uncover what makes this artist so unique.

Born in Mexico City in 1932, Nierman actually got his start in the arts by playing the violin. He studied music for 18 years, but after comparing his music to a recording of Yehudi Menuhin, he decided to give it up. Despite this early disappointment, it wasn’t long until www.thecitymagazineelp.com

fate stepped in with different plans for Nierman’s art. “A couple of years after I said goodbye to music, I was walking downtown in Mexico City and I stopped in front of a store. I looked through the window and they had a big box of colored pencils that looked like a rainbow. I instantly fell in love with it—It was beautiful enough to put in my home. The man in charge of the store and I started talking for about an hour and I asked him to send me material and from this chance encounter I started my painting.” Nierman practiced painting for many more years before he finally began working with metal. “Sculpture is also a game,” Nierman said. “I started when I was sitting at a table with my friend drinking wine. In those days, they made wine bottles with a piece of metal around the top, like the kind on a champagne bottle. I came to play with the metal during meals and one day I had a friend who saw what I made and he said ‘let me give this to my wife.’ From then on I started working on the idea of doing more, I liked my perception of harmony and I am very happy with what has come out of it.” From those early days till now Nierman has continued practicing and harnessing his art – both the painting and the sculpture, drawing inspiration from the simplest items he sees in everyday life. “My inspiration is in the flame. I enjoy the flame; I enjoy leaves of a tree in the wind. It’s hard to believe it, but the holidays are upon us once again. ‘Tis the season of giving and receiving, family photos and gatherings, so I’ve compiled a few do’s and don’ts to ensure you’re looking and feeling your best this holiday season.

Do’s Don’ts Holiday Style The

and

Office Holiday Parties This is a once-a-year opportunity to dress to impress, but remember to keep your look tasteful. Regardless of where you work, try a little harder to look your very best, with a chic twist. You want to shy away from textures and patterns that too closely

of

resemble a Christmas ornament or cliché “ugly sweater,” so go for the season’s trendy midi skirt for an elegant and modern look, or a fail-safe LBD with a pop of red lipstick and a festive manicure.

Holiday Dinner Parties

Stand out from the crowd without the obvious tinsel and sparkles by donning

unique red tones like crimson or marsala (Pantone color of the year). After all,

‘tis the season to be jolly, so have fun with your fashion choices.

New Year’s Eve Parties Short mini dresses are long gone! Try a fitted dress that falls below the knee or a dramatic jumpsuit to ring in the New Year with drama (the good kind) and flair.

recently took my son to see Jurassic World. He thrilled to the sight of dinosaurs wreaking mayhem across the land and the unlikely heroics of the T. Rex. I did as well, but for me there was the added element of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard coming

upon the original park’s welcome center from the very first movie and her use of a red flare to draw out the T. Rex just as Jeff Goldblum did back in 1993. My son isn’t old enough to remember that first journey into Crichton’s genetic experiment gone awry, so it didn’t strike the same chord. According to Nielsen, people between the ages of 25 and 44 make up 36% of moviegoers. So there’s a definite audience for reliving magical moments of yore. But at 30% of the audience, the 12-25 age demographic is nothing to sneeze at. Is there enough consideration being given to the younger generation? Jurassic World’s romp through dino dystopia made just enough detours down memory lane to be enjoyable without feeling cheap. But when you look at the broader landscape www.thecitymagazineelp.com

December/January, 2016 films found a great way to blend elements of the past with fresh ideas, and I’m excited to see what new frontiers they’ll explore now that the second film has departed from the old mythology. Yes, let’s see Kirk, Spock and the rest of the cast of old favorites from the last 50 years go boldly into the cosmos. But the whole concept of Star Trek embodies the idea of films as entertainment. There has to be something new. My generation gets the thrill of seeing our favorite childhood stories propagate throughout the course of our lives. However, I worry that we’re getting that blast from the past at the expense of the next generation’s entertainment future. We just celebrated “Back to the Future Day,” meaning that old series has finally come full circle. Where’s the next film or franchise to replace that? Will my son get to celebrate his own “Back to the Future Day,” or will he just have to sit through the tenth anniversary of mine? When we go to the park, I don’t push my son out of the swing and hog it for myself. My time as a kid is over. It’s his turn to have fun. Why should I, or Hollywood, think the rules are different in the movie theater?

s we round the last corner and 2016 begins to come into focus many of you might be thinking about making New Year’s resolutions and changing. I have a suggestion for 2016 – just do you.

The earliest recorded festivities in honor of New Year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. The Babylonians marked the occasion with a massive religious festival and made promises to their gods at the start of each year. Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future, and to whom the Romans made promises to at the beginning of each year. Millennia’s later we are collectively still making the same empty promises to change. But in every moment of everyday we’re changing and evolving and growing. In every moment, we’re reconstructing our identity. We’re not defined by our decisions from two years ago. We’re not

“A new you can still emerge from the old you.” – Bamigboye Olurotimi

even defined by our decisions from two minutes ago. We’re defined by whom we choose to be in this very moment. We have this myth of identity — that who we are is the summation of a lot of choices we made in the past. That we’ve got a map for the life we’re supposed to lead and we’ve got to stick to it. But that’s assuming that we’re all static beings and that’s not how people work. We’ll never be “figured out.” Over the course of our lives, we’ll constantly be transforming into a more and more authentic version of ourselves. Each of us is rare. Being unique is the spirit that already resides in us, the inner intention, primary style and way of being that makes us true individuals regardless, of the pressure to conform to temporary social patterns and contemporary cultural fashions. At the individual level, each person is here to give something that is not just unusual, not only exceptional, but that is distinctive and divine. This year, I hope you find moments of peace and your inner uniqueness for life aspires you to do meaningful work and discover genuine purpose. That you have the courage to undertake the seemingly impossible tasks of transforming culture and helping to heal the world. Not because the world can be saved or redeemed in a hurry, but because it is the impossibility of the great problems and projects of life that awakens the sleeping uniqueness within and changes work from a simple job to a life-long, life-enhancing project. That serves the dignity and nobility of one’s soul as well as the well being of one’s community. I hope you experience good health, that you are kissed by fortune, treated kindly by fate, that you jump high, and fall slow, and that all your landings are gentle. But mostly I hope that you are encouraged to recognize and embrace your inner and exceptional uniqueness.

he image of the lone rider rolling through the desert is not just a romantic notion to El Paso; it is part of our history. In a city so closely associated with both Billy the Kid and John Wesley Hardin, it would only make sense that a Sun City native would be inspired to make a film about the old west, but Frank Powers the writer and director of “Brothers James: Retribution,” pulled his inspiration directly from the silver

screen. “The idea for the project came from mine and my director of the film Aaron Morga’s love for spaghetti westerns,” Powers said. “Both of our fathers are huge Clint Eastwood fans and this was passed to each of us.” Despite the passionate love for the genre there is still the major issue of shooting such epic cinema on a local scale, but this is something that Powers feels confident in his ability to execute, “With the advances in film to digital cinema, the possibility of making a truly amazing visual western is boundless,” he said. Film is a brutal medium that requires a persistence that is at times almost inhuman, “I originally came up with the concept for the story approximately three years ago and last year wrote a script that Aaron Morga was drawn to,” recalls Powers. “He has just edited it to be one of the coolest cinematic westerns of all time. with their vast valleys and barren mountains make an amazing backdrop.” This is fairly important to the native El Pasoan because as he points out, “The west is a main character in the film.” Undertaking a project such as this is always a daunting task and the passion necessary to envision and execute it must be everpresent. This is certainly a quality that

Powers possesses. When pressed to explain where this enthusiasm comes from, Powers manages to keep it simple. “Just my love for the genre. I developed what I thought would be a new tale of the old west and so far it has worked out amazingly,” he said. Envisioning a task and undertaking it are vastly different acts, but the process of making “Brother James: Retribution” has proven to be a fulfilling one so far. “It’s been just an over all fun experience with an interesting story and over the top visuals packed with excitement,” Powers said. He acknowledges that the film is not just simply

the brothers use a small lie to advance themselves while searching for their father’s killer. This misidentification leads them to cross paths with some of the most notorious gunslingers in all of history. The roving brothers can be seen as a reflection of their creator. Born in upstate New York and raised in a military family, Powers ended up enlisting himself, which is how he came to end up in El Paso in 1996.

Etiquette

The Twelve Days Before Christmas | By: JOANN WARDY | It is so easy to get caught up during the holidays with our own personal and family wants, shopping, parties and cheer. Let us not forget those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Following is a suggestion for the 12 days before Christmas. Gather your children and: Day 1 - Visit the elderly in the hospital. Take them fruit. Day 2 - Visit the children’s floor at the hospital. Take them candy canes. Day 3 - Visit a nursing home. Take magazines. Day 4 - Visit one unfortunate family. Take a basket of food. Day 5 - Call or visit an elderly person who lives alone. Day 6 - Call or visit a sick friend. Day 7 - Spend an afternoon with one of your friend’s children. Take them to the movie, park or zoo. Day 8 - Help an elderly person clean their house. Day 9 - Take and share dinner with a widow or widower. Day 10 - Visit an orphanage. Take Santa Claus. Day 11 - Rekindle a lost friendship. Day 12 - Tell someone you love them. You’ll know who. Joann Wardy owns and directs “The School of Etiquette and Enrichment” and was certified at “The Protocol School of Washington”. Burning out the spark

Sparkly sweaters are a go-to for a lot of girls during the

holiday season. Just because sparkly screams festive, doesn’t mean that these sweaters are meant for everyone. We should leave looking like a cheerful disco ball for the

“ugly sweater parties” and opt for a more glamourous and refined look during these holidays. A cashmere sweater or a cozy wool wrap up are less cheesy options.

Egg-no! I know eggnog might be a tradition in a lot of homes for the holiday season, but nowadays there’s so many cocktails and holiday drinks to try that eggnog seems a bit like a snooze fest (or what if you’re lactose intolerant!?) Try instead a spiced up “ponche” or “calientito,” a whiskey-spiked hot chocolate, a hot-buttered rum, or even the Mexican version of eggnog “Rompope.”

Boring Winter Gloves Just because it may be cold does not mean that your wardrobe needs to be muted and understated. Not a lot of people pay attention to winter gloves, but there’s a lot of variety to choose from and give your hands that extra pizazz this winter. You can get gloves with embroidery, jewels, in funky colors, in leather or some even come with a special texture at the finger tips that allows you to use your smart phone while wearing them so no more cold fingers. Ditch the boring black gloves and give your hands a stylish new look. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

As we dive head first into another holiday season of gifting and gathering, the last thing that guys want to do is spend money on anything that doesn’t work. All of us want to look and feel our best, but buying junk products that don’t live up to our expectations leaves us feeling like we bought the swampland. To alleviate some of the holiday stressors, here are some men’s grooming products that won’t break the bank or leave you with a regretful purchase. Aveda New Shampure™ Dry Shampoo If you have been following His Prerogative you will already know how down I am with dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is super easy to use and it leaves your hair feeling like you just used some badass salon style wet shampoo and conditioner. However, Shampure from Aveda was just released and it tops the charts. Co-founder/Senior stylist Gloria Viramontes of West End Hair Company got me hooked to the amazing new Shampure, a product which she had been patiently waiting for the release of for years. The coolest thing about Shampure is that it is non-aerosol and it has an awesome aroma of 25 pure flower/plant essences that are subtle enough for even the most macho man. This is one of the best additions to your gym bag as well, as it will refresh your hair, bringing it back to life after an intense workout. Available at West End Hair Co. $30

R+Co AIRCRAFT Pomade Mousse Yeah, that’s right- MOUSSE! The little kid inside of you just got excited to make mini Mount Everest of fluffy foam in your palm, huh? Well, this isn’t just your average mousse. This lovely can of clouds turns into a pomade the moment that it touches your follicles, enabling you to texturize and add volume to your hair. Natural ingredients like papaya extracts and vegetable proteins help to moisturize each strand, making hair more resilient to everyday conditions. Available at Birchbox.com $29 + free shipping!

Jack Black Industrial Strength Hand Healer From the Denali detailer at the local car wash to the paper pushing office warrior, all of us guys are about to experience some skindrying winter weather. When the weather starts to dry you out, ease your epithelial with this fragrance and paraben-free Hand Healer that is made with organic ingredients. Got dry or cracked feet? Are your elbows looking a bit trollish? Slather some of this skin saver over your troubled areas and you will feel as good as new in no time at all. for a Gym

| By: LIZZIE MARTINEZ |

What do you enjoy doing?

First of all, it is hard to get motivated from the start, so if you choose a fitness program that you hate you will not

stay on it long term. If you tell yourself, “I have a lot of energy. I like to dance and jump to enjoy my workout,”

then choose something upbeat like Zumba or a HIIT cardio boot camp. If you enjoy feeling strong and really want

to individualize and sculpt each body part, then a weight training gym is for you. If you enjoy group work and

crushing your personal records then try a CrossFit gym. If you like to relax a bit and have good “me-time” during your workout, choose something like yoga or a barre class.

What is your schedule like?

This is important to look into, as many gyms have different hours that might not accommodate your schedule. If your schedule is very busy, and ever-changing, (sometimes you workout at night, sometimes early morning, etc.) I suggest trying a gym with open hours. Anytime Fitness

or Planet Fitness have open hours, where you can come and go as you

please. If you are the type of person who likes to have a strategically

set schedule, try a private personal training gym where you can have your

hours set with a trainer every day you train. If you like set schedules, but want some flexibility, then sign up for a program of classes where you can keep

going at the same time, or change it up. CrossFit is good for group classes

where you can come in at anytime, but you have to come in during the

scheduled classes so it would still keep you on a steady schedule.

What is your budget?

How much money are you willing to invest in your fitness

goals? If you are comfortable working out on your own,

going to a bigger, open-gym facility would have a smaller

gym fee, but not necessarily personal customer service. If

you think you need help navigating your way around the gym, it might be a good idea to invest in getting a personal

trainer at a private gym to show you the ropes. If you sign
