The Rise of Beto O’Rourke Record Turnout for Midterm Elections: El Paso’s own Robert “Beto” O’Rourke became a bonafide national celebrity in 2018 during his senate campaign against incumbent Ted Cruz. O’Rourke, who represented Texas’ 16th district from 2013-

Time Magazine Has New Owners In September, billionaire couple Marc and Lynne Benioff purchased the iconic Time Magazine for $190 million in cash. Mr. Benioff, who’s made billions off of his tech-company, Salesforce, told the media that his decision to buy the publication was somewhat a spur-of-the-moment decision. Inspired by a shared appreciation for Time’s central role in the recording of American history, the tech mogul and his wife seemed to see this as more of a passion project than a cold financial investment. Long before his venture into the journalism industry, Benioff had gained recognition for meshing altruism with business. In 2000, he established the so-called “1-1-1” practice in Salesforce, a plan in which the corporation gives one percent of the product, one percent of equity, and one percent of employee hours back to the communities where it operates. Although the new bosses promised not to get involved with operations, their considerable 38

AT&T and Time Warner Inc. Unite In June, US District Court Judge Richard Leon okayed telecommunications giant AT&T’s long anticipated $85 billion acquisition of media conglomerate Time Warner Inc. The two corporations, both stalwarts in their respective industries, hope they’ll now be able to more effectively compete against information behemoths like Google and Facebook. The merger had been held up for some time by the Department of Justice’s antitrust unit that argued the unification would give AT&T an unfair advantage over other telephone companies. Skeptics of the arrangement fear a beefed-up AT&T could dominate the field by coupling cell phone services with entertainment packages, a tandem that no rival could match. Only time will tell.

Owner Patricia Rubio, who was born and raised in El Paso, has been making cakes for two years now. After ordering a cake for her husband, Ricardo Serna, in the shape of a wrench, she thought to herself, “This is something I think I would like to do.” She took a couple of basic cake-making classes and just took off from there. Today, her customers are her primary focus as she “would not be here if it wasn’t for them.” Creating their cakes and being part of their special celebrations is very rewarding and Patricia feels blessed and grateful that she has been granted the opportunity to serve her community in this way. France Wins the World Cup, Real Madrid Business as Usual, Ronaldo Shocks the World The World Cup was riddled with surprises as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the sport’s biggest superstars, were eliminated in the quarter finals. Croatia clawed their way to their first final, however, the French proved to be too much. Kylian Mbappe, a 19-year-old French superstar, helped drive “les bleus” to a victory over the Croatians. Real Madrid, with Zinedine Zidane at the helm and perennial hero Cristiano Ronaldo in tow, won their third consecutive Champions League final—a feat that had never been accomplished before. However, the headlines revolved around more than just the victory as both Zidane and Ronaldo left the team soon after the victory. Ronaldo joined Italian powerhouse Juventus FC and Zidane is currently weighing his options.
Fly Eagles Fly, The Brady Question and Jones’ Success The Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots duked it out in the 2018 Super Bowl. The Eagles held on to win their first franchise Super Bowl. When asked if he felt appreciated by the Patriots, Tom Brady, a record-holding franchise quarterback, pleaded the fifth—a response that raised many eyebrows. After a breakout season in 2017, hometown hero and UTEP golden boy Aaron Jones continues to prove himself with the Green Bay Packers. He is quickly becoming a vital component of the Packers’ attack as they fight their way to a playoff spot.

2018 The Year in Sports
December/January, 2019
Warriors Win Gold, James Makes Waves by Moving to LA The Golden State Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA finals. Many considered it poetic justice for a team that had dominated much of the season. Lebron James, arguably the best player the league has seen in the last couple of decades, shifted his attention to the LA Lakers in a move that sparked controversy as the marketing superstar looked to expand upon his legacy. James Harden, point guard for the Houston Rockets, won the season’s MVP.
The Red Sox Win The Big One, Rookies Shine The Boston Red Sox beat down the recently relocated LA Dodgers at the 114th edition of The World Series to claim their ninth title. The Sox had a dominant season, surpassing the 100-win mark for the first time since the club’s 1946 season, winning the most games in a single season since the 2001 Mariners. Rookies Ronald Acuna Jr. and Juan Soto had breakout seasons in performances that positioned them to be serious contenders for next season. They are both in the running for the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Viejo Coffee Caffeine Pop-Up On Wheels

ith roughly half of Americans over the age of eighteen drinking an average of three and a half cups of coffee each day, it shouldn’t shock
a soul to see how quickly the options are growing for the masses to
find a great cup of Joe. It is a caffeine lover’s dream. Before the co-
owners of Viejo Coffee decided to jump into the caffeine game, they understood the importance of gaining as much knowledge as they possibly could about the magical little coffee bean that would drive their business. They cleverly sprinkled a bit of their own childhood memories into their concept as well. Miguel De la Rocha and Jose Arévalo are long-time friends from all the way back in grade school. Years later in high school, Jose’s interest turned to boxing. Jose and Ricardo Silva met at a local gym where they were both preparing to participate

in their first Golden Gloves boxing tournament. They built a friendship while training and kept in touch with each other over the years. In 2005, shortly after graduating from high school, Miguel and Jose began their first business as partners. A small trucking company that they operated for two years before making the decision to sell the company and pursue an education. It was maybe four years ago, when the two business partners were getting their Roasted Corn Bus food truck up and running, that they began planning the opening of a coffee shop. While the Roasted Corn Bus worked large catered events around the city slinging roasted corn in a cup out the back of a Volkswagen van (sometimes referred to as a VW Micro Bus), the guys had a second VW Micro Bus being equipped to hit the streets as their mobile coffee shop. In keeping with the theme of their first food truck, the original idea was to call the new business the Roasted Coffee Bean. The business partners eventually shifted gears by selling the second Micro Bus and investing their time in gaining additional knowledge in the art and science of coffee through different training courses. After some time passed, Ricardo returned from a trip to Europe and, following a conversation with Jose, they realized they had similar ideas and a common interest in opening a coffee shop. December/January, 2019 the east side of El Paso found a 1974 VW Micro Bus to restore and, shortly after, hit the streets as Viejo Coffee. In addition to their mobile caffeine machine, the Viejo Coffee co-owners also have an indoor catering set up they utilize to get the word out to the public about their future plans of opening up shop inside International, a bar on Mills Avenue across from San Jacinto Plaza. Plans to expand to the east side are also being developed. The guys can often be found sticking out the top of their slick rolling coffee shop at The Downtown Art and Farmers Market on Saturday, handing coffee cups and iced drinks in bags to their customers. The bolsa—or bag—brings a little bit of the coffee shop co-owners’ childhood memories to the business. Ricardo, Miguel, and Jose spent many of their summers in different parts of Mexico, where it was common to see the kids drinking their sodas out of a bag with ice, and a straw with a rubber band wrapped tightly around the top end. “Pretty much everything we use is organic,” Miguel says proudly. to use the best quality products they can find. From the organic fair trade coffee from Chiapas, Mexico, to their selection of organic milks and syrups, they strongly believe it makes a difference in taste and presentation. “ Our bags are plant based, they are biodegradable. Our straws are made from avocado seed, also biodegradable,” Miguel also mentions. All the ingredients are carefully measured out to ensure consistency. This includes the sixteen hour cold brew and all hot beverage options. In the near future, the guys at Viejo Coffee plan to add a matcha latte and hot chocolate for the non-coffee drinker. Track them down on social media and try their iced horchata latte, it comes highly recommended.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war, caused the cession of half of Mexico’s territory to the United States, increasing American holdings by nearly a third.

l Paso-born Sirac Martinez knew he wanted to be a comic book
artist at only four years old. After graduating from Ysleta High
School and moving to Arizona to earn a degree in graphic design, his passion was paused to fulfill a different, yet financially stable,
career in another field. After this short hiatus from art, Sirac knew
that his dream of publishing a comic book was one he had to fulfill.

Sirac lives by the belief that an artist must expand their horizons and step out of their comfort zones in order to succeed, as he’s had to do time and time again. A second belief at the core of Sirac’s career is that accessibility is key. He welcomes meeting with families for book signings, and is happy to answer any questions on craft or working in the art industry and even offers lessons for budding artists. He hopes to be a mentor to young generations as an example of someone who followed his dreams despite life’s obstacles. “There’s a reason why the term ‘starving artist’ exists,” says Sirac. “If I could say anything to El Pasoans, for artists, it would be: support us. Not just me, but support the artist that you like. Buy their piece, start a collection, talk about them, share their work on social media. We all need it.” Follow Sirac on Facebook.com/SiracIncArt

educate the public on conservation topics and then getting their dream job here at the zoo, always leaves us in sheer awe. Their continued support, dedication and passion drives us to continue expanding our program to meet its highest potential. One of the community outreach events our volunteers truly love being a part of is going to local schools to read and engage with our youth. We have attended schools such as Thomas Manor Elementary for “Read Across America,” as well as Capistrano Elementary for “Dr. Seuss week,” where we were greeted with smiling and happy faces. We had the pleasure of talking to kids of all ages about the importance of recycling to promote a healthy environment, giving back to their community and of course showing off our very loveable mascots that kids just go wild over! Some might not admit it, but many adults go wild over our mascots too—

but that will stay between us. These kinds of community outreach opportunities are possible because of the volunteers who make it their mission to give back to their community in various types of settings, ensuring that a tiny seed is planted in the hearts and minds of our little ones–which will grow into the desire to someday give back to their community as well.

reat skin is not simply a matter of DNA—your daily skin care can have
a big impact on what you see in the mirror. Let’s break down the world
of skin care to simplify what should become your basic skin care routine.
Skin Care | By: ELYSE SIMONS |
Basics
What is involved in basic skin care maintenance? You want to use products that will keep your skin from getting overly dry or dehydrated—keeping it clean and hydrated will slow down the daily aging process. Follow these basic steps and make sure to cleanse and moisturize/replenish twice daily.
Cleanse
Properly cleansing the face includes using three products:
an eye makeup remover, a facial cleanser and a toner.
Eye Makeup Remover
A gentle product that will remove
all eye makeup quickly, without all the usual rubbing and tugging, for the eye area is recommended. My favorite is Almay Longwear & Waterproof Gentle Eye Makeup Remover, it can be found in most drug stores.
Cleanser
A milky, creamy or oily cleanser is best for all skin types.
These cleansers gently dissolve makeup, excess dirt, oils and sunscreen as well as deeply penetrate the pores to dissolve the “bad” oils and bacteria from the skin. I recommend Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi Clarifying Cleansing Oil.
Toner
The purpose of a toner, also called a softening lotion, is to
remove cleanser residue from the skin. Choose an alcohol free toner, as alcohol is an ingredient that dehydrates the skin. Claims that toners shrink or close your pores are false. If they were true, why would anyone have large pores? I recommend Shu Uemera Ultime8 Sublime Lotion.
Moisturize and Replenish
Holding in the skin’s natural
moisture is crucial for all skin types and ages. There are three products you need to use daily: moisturizer, night cream and eye cream.
Moisturizer
Often called a daytime moisturizer, it is meant
to sit on the surface and protect the skin from the environment, hold in water and keep a barrier between skin and makeup—which allows makeup to go on better, look fresher and stay on longer. My favorite is Janssen Cosmetics Calming Sensitive Cream.
Night Cream
A night cream or treatment product can penetrate
the skin to replace water, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial ingredients to the skin. I recommend Janssen Cosmetics Night Replenisher.
Eye Cream
The skin around the eye is seven times thinner than
on the rest of the face. Therefore, an eye cream formulated for the delicate eye area is recommended. I recommend Chantecaille Stress Repair Concentrate. 150

Fashion Climbing by Bill Cunningham Written in secret before his death in 2016, Fashion Climbing is famed fashion photographer Bill Cunningham’s intimate memoir. The book chronicles Cunningham’s early life and his unlikely rise to the top of New York City’s fashion world. Raw, sincere, and superbly written, this work offers readers a comprehensive understanding of one of fashion’s great innovators.
All You Can Ever Know: A Memoir by Nicole Chung Adopted from an impoverished Korean family at a young age, author Nicole Chung’s first book recounts her experience being raised by a middle-class white family in Oregon and her journey to find herself as an adult. Chung skillfully explores the complex challenges adoption has posed to her identity and sense of belonging.
Good and Mad by Rebecca Traister Written by New York Magazine’s “writer at large” Rebecca Traister, Good and Mad dissects the anger felt by many women, and men, in the face of a historically sexist society. Traister not only documents the causes of such resentment but explains how it has been used constructively to create a more egalitarian nation.
Becoming by Michelle Obama The much-anticipated memoir of one of our country’s most beloved first ladies finally hit the shelves in November. Fans of Mrs. Obama won’t be disappointed as the 400-page auto-biographical work promises a charming and in depth look into one of our time’s most important figures.

UTEP has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. With it, the University District too has burgeoned. Whether you’re an incoming freshman or graduated decades ago, there is fun to be had in this vibrant slice of central El Paso.
Little Shack
Can’t make it to Peñasco this year? Don’t get down about it, head to Little Shack and dip into the seaside state-of-mind. This little restaurant–one of three locations in El Paso–offers Caribbean delicacies, topnotch fish tacos and a wide variety of tropical cocktails to wash it all down.
Paradigm Texas Gift Shop This Kern Place gem, located in an old dance studio, has something for everybody. Like the store’s design, the inventory is eclectic—ranging from fine silk scarves to shave kits. One constant, however, is quality. All of the products are exceptionally well made.
Uptown Cheapskate
Uptown Cheapskate describes itself as “a cross between your favorite mall store, a thrift store, and the exclusive boutique that’s just down the street.” The shop features a conglomeration of some of the coolest lifestyle brands along with carefully selected second-hand clothes.

Kinley’s Coffee House
Kinley’s Coffee House is arguably the most popular study spot for UTEP students right behind the university library. However, the joint’s rich coffee, tasty pastries and solid food menu make it a must visit for everyone, no matter when they graduated.
The Palomino Tavern
The Palomino Tavern has no problem standing out in El Paso’s increasingly competitive bar landscape. This place has great food and drink menus, reasonable prices and a beautiful patio that is perfect on nights when the desert just won’t cool down.

island could be referred to as a living, breathing museum. But if you’re not a fan of archaeological splendor, don’t let that dissuade you, because mixed in with the Doric columns, stone ruins, clay pots and marble statues, is one of the
prettiest places you will ever visit.
The walled Old Town of Rodos, which is the Greek name for the capital city of Rhodes, is a capital divided by conquest. The Byzantine, Jewish, Roman and Turkish Quarters each speak of different cultures and eras of occupation. The Byzantines arrived in the Third Century and stayed until the 1300s. They were there for a thousand years, so their influence permeates the landscape. Next, the Order of the Knights of St. John the Baptist came, conquered and later protected Rhodes and its people. Many buildings and artifacts from both of these periods were destroyed or lost with the arrival of the Ottomans in the 16th century. This did not bode well for relations between Turkey, visible from the Rhodesian shoreline, and present day islanders. Early in the 20th Century, Rhodes transferred its political allegiance to Italy. All of this history is significant because of the impact it had on the face of the Old Town of Rodos. Every view is filled with a plethora of architectural styles. Mosques were built on the remains of Mycenaean temples. Christianity crowned many of the Islamic domes. Open foundations, dug down into the remnants of time, reveal centuries of interesting stories. Walking through the winding streets of each quarter was a truly incredible experience. Eating lunch in a garden shaded entirely by the limbs of one tree felt like living in a fairytale. Absorbing the beauty, the legends and glory of the past was breathtaking. The more popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini are at the top of every travel agent’s list, but if you are lucky enough to get to Greece, leave Rhodes till the end of your trip. It simply doesn’t get any better.

Dallas-born singer, Laura Tate, is drawing rave reviews for her fourth CD, “Let’s Just Be Real.” This soulful interpretation of the classics, with an enviable back-up band of seasoned pros, was recorded in Los Angeles last spring and has been gaining international airplay since its summer release. The album has already garnered fantastic reviews from around the world and is one of the best releases of this year. Known for her versatility, Laura sings a compilation of American standards from the 30s to the 50s in her first CD, “Songs from My Suitcase.” “Blue Train” and “I Must Be Dreaming,” add versatility to her music that encompasses jazz, blues and rock in her second and third albums. Singing since she was nine years old, Laura traveled the

wanted to incorporate the strength of that word into a dish that would ease this seemingly endless year. Growing up, my dad would always gravitate to seafood for most of our special occasions. I think living in the desert made it seem exotic, but who’s complaining? This dish is packed with seafood and it’s best served when it’s cold outside, so plan accordingly. Easy and quick to make, a seafood chowder is all about your prep. Be meticulous about the directions and ingredients and you’ll be set. Bringing this home for the holidays with a respectful

Comebacks With the announcement of the Spice Girls coming back, a “Child’s Play” reboot in 2019, and Queen’s music topping the charts, it’s more than safe to say that comebacks are in. How can you apply this to your life? Remember that sweater from ten years ago? Why not dust it off and rock it this winter? Those charming but old shoes, step out in them! There’s no limit to what you can bring back from the dead.
Bag it up Paperbag pants are hot right now! Their versatility can allow you to dress up or down depending on your mood and the weather! You can find them in different fabrics as well, velvet and cotton are perfect for the winter. Don’t be afraid to try them on!
Layering That five layer dip is not the only thing you can bring to your holiday parties, clothes can be layered as well. Now that winter is here, you have to think about how to stay warm. Consider mixing and matching pieces of your wardrobe to keep toasty and stylish. Try to incorporate a sweater vest or a cardigan on top of your shirt, and then wrap everything under a nice jacket or coat. You can play with a variety of pieces to achieve your desired look.

OUT Grinchmas
There’s always a party pooper at every holiday celebration. If you hate buying gifts, cooking or bringing food to dinner, can’t stand listening to Mariah Carey when she gets festive, or detest anything that comes in an apple-cinnamon scent, well, you’re the grinch of your family and you better stay home.
Wrong-wraps Stuffing the perfect holiday present in a generic holiday gift bag is a thing of the past. With so many wrapping options and tons of ideas on how to personalize a wrap on Pinterest, there’s no longer any excuse. Take the extra step and wow your loved ones with a personalized name-tag, patchwork wrapping paper made from a bunch of scraps, or even a collage of newspaper clippings of stuff they like.
Single-days The holiday season can feel especially cold when you’re single, but don’t worry, not having a significant other shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this special time of the year. You’ll be free to spend extra time with your own family and friends. And in case somebody asks that uncomfortable question about why you’re alone, just reply: “I prefer buying presents for myself.”
