RETIRED FIRE CAPTAIN
Esteban Armendariz’s LIFE OF SERVICE | By: MARKO A. MORALES photography by: TOMMIE MORELOS |

ns Esteban Armendariz considers himself one of the lucky few who ended up actually living out their childhood dream. Luckily for residents of El Paso, in the late 60s Armendariz’s dream to become a firefighter may have flickered at times along the way, but was never fully extinguished. Even before serving his community and constantly putting himself in harm’s way for just over a quarter century, Armendariz dedicated many years of his life to coaching and mentoring the youth from his community and continued doing so after retirement. As a young boy originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, Armendariz always knew he wanted to be a firefighter. At 13 years of age and alongside his family, Armendariz relocated further north in the Chihuahuan Desert to El Paso, Texas. After attending Jefferson High School and working a couple of different jobs, Armendariz landed a job working for a trailer company. This is where his desire to fight fires and keep people safe once again found its way to the forefront. One day while working at the trailer company, a building somehow caught fire. Armendariz chose to do what few people would. Instead of quickly exiting the structure and waiting safely outside until those better equipped to handle such a situation arrived on the scene, Armendariz jumped into action and was found by first responders still inside the building doing what he could to contain the flames. As a 24-year-old Armendariz stood across the street watching the firefighters do what they do best, he reflected upon the actions he took before the EPFD www.thecitymagazineelp.com

July, 2014 “You’ve seen this in cartoons where you see a guy flipping through the air,” Armendariz expressed. “Well, that is exactly the way it went.” According to Armendariz, the car plowed directly into Majorca; sending his limp body about 60 ft. into the ditch filled with 3 ft. of water. Knowing Majorca’s condition could not be good, Armendariz ordered his men in the fire engine to call in the accident. Armendariz found Majorca lying in the ditch with just his head sticking out of the water. Majorca was pulled onto the side of the ditch by Armendariz and placed on a pile of cattails (shrubbery) as the paramedics arrived. Even though Majorca found himself fighting for his life due to serious injuries, including broken bones throughout his body and damage to his heart, the young fireman (in his mid-twenties at the time) eventually recovered. Some time later Armendariz was surprised to find out his actions were being recognized by the fire department and Majorca’s family through a small ceremony held at the fire station, “We don’t really consider ourselves heroes, we just consider it part of the job.” Armendariz said. With media in attendance, Armendariz was awarded a small token of appreciation in the form of a plaque. Prior to becoming a firefighter in 1967, Armendariz had already began giving back to his community when he began volunteering as an assistant coach for youth sports. His oldest child joined a youth softball team, which led to Armendariz devoting twenty years worth of his summers and off time coaching softball, baseball and basketball. After retirement Armendariz opened and owned two of his own businesses. The first was a major appliances repair shop and the other was a business where he worked as a financial analyst. Later he went on to work as a weights coach and mentor for the David L. Carrasco Job Corps for eight years. In charge of the weight room, Armendariz taught the youth involved in the program about nutrition and the proper way to lift. These days, Armendariz can be found enjoying retirement by doing crossword puzzles, working on his yard and taking his wife of 49 years out to eat. This father of two has spent the majority of his life positively contributing to his community and influencing the youth in El Paso. For this, The City Magazine is proud to recognize retired Captain Esteban Armendariz as one of its heroes. We thank you for your time, dedication and commitment.

The time and dedication that goes into being a firefighter helps the men and women who serve be prepared for difficult, yet impactful situations. “This man was building a bed for his daughter and he collapsed in front of his family. It was a bit more stressful because his entire family and his kids were there. We performed CPR on him and shocked him and he came back from that. We later learned that he was healthy after that. He wasn’t permanently impacted by it and he is now able to live a life where he can still be with his kids and lead a normal life. That was something that impacted me greatly,” said Torres. Reflecting on prior experiences, Torres also remembers a call involving a young boy, “There was an incident at what use to be Vintage Car Wash where one of the youngest teenaged kids who worked there got his leg caught on one of the machines. It was very inspiring to see a lot of companies come together to help him out and get his leg out. At the time, his leg looked severely hurt because he had lost a lot of skin, but it was nice to see him a few days later at the hospital and all he needed were two screws in his leg. It is always a good feeling to see someone who could have lost their leg and you were able to save them.” Without Lieutenant Carlos Torres as well as the other men and women who serve the city of El Paso we would not have heroes to which we are utterly grateful and it is Marisol’s words that are synonymous to how El Pasoans feel toward our heroes. “The community is really grateful for these people. These people are away from their families and friends. They give the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. We are one of the safest cities and we are blessed because of that. They go out of their way to risk their lives for us and protect our city. That is something a lot of people take for granted. I am very grateful to everybody.” A hero is typically defined as, “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” But, to Marisol Torres, “A hero to me is someone that goes out of their way to help other people. He not only helps people when he’s at work, he also helps people outside of work. We’ll be at Target and he’ll see an elderly women not being able to pick up something heavy and he will go and offer to do it. He’s always helping other people. At work he is the chef. He cooks for the entire fire station, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. On top of cooking three meals a day, he studied to be a lieutenant and he still goes on calls.” To Lieutenant Torres, heroes are the men and women that he serves alongside every day. Heroes are those who wait for the next call and say, “Please let it be me to help someone today.”

the city heroes
We often don’t think about the people we pass on the street. But in the masses are many unsung heroes walking among us. El Paso, Texas is not the largest city in the U.S. but it is home to many individuals who sacrifice their time, efforts, energy, and even risk their lives for the greater good of us all. Among the numerous soldiers of Fort Bliss, El Paso Firefighters, Law

teachers
and volunteers here are a few of the stories of dedication, hope and triumph that showcase the best sides of the human spirit. Each one of these heroes was nominated by a loved one, friend or co-worker on The City Magazine website.
OZZIE CARRILLO, JR. From a very small age Ozzie Carrillo, Jr. has always dreamed of being a firefighter. Today Ozzie has fulfilled his dream, working fulltime as an El Paso firefighter, he also volunteers with the West Valley Fire Department in Anthony. Ozzie has several certifications in both Texas and New Mexico, including water rescue. Whether he is on or off duty, Ozzie responds to those in need. One day while he was out jogging with a friend out by the levy, he noticed a man having difficulties. Ozzie did not hesitate to step in and assist the man and gave him fast medical attention. Altogether Ozzie Carrillo, Jr. is one firefighter out to ensure the safety of our great city.

MICHAEL S. HEIMALL Colonel Heimall is a true asset to the El Paso/Ft. Bliss community as the commander of William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He has labored relentlessly to continue to provide the highest level of care to active duty military soldiers, retirees, veterans, and civilians at WBAMC throughout the cutbacks his hospital has gone through with government sequestration. He has done this while simultaneously being involved in opening health care centers for soldiers outside the confines of Ft. Bliss in El Paso, and planning for the opening of the all-new WBAMC scheduled for 2016. He also works to recruit civilian doctors from both within the Texas Tech Medical School and outside of it to stay or relocate to El Paso. DESIREE C. MEJIA To say Desiree Mejia is an avid volunteer would be a giant understatement. Desiree works as a nurse in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) here in El Paso. Everyday she gives all she has to the children who cross her path. But Desiree’s desire to help and serve others does not stop there; she has been a volunteer in one capacity or another for most of her life. For the past few years she has been a mentor for children struggling in school at a local elementary school. More recently, she became a CASA (Court Appointed Child Advocate) for children that are in the court system for being abused and neglected. She also volunteers for her church.
KEN MILLS “Service before self,” that’s the motto that Ken Mills lives by. Ken has been involved in helping save lives since he was 16; when he started volunteering with an ambulance service in a small town outside his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. He stayed there until he graduated from high school and then he ended up here in El Paso. Initially wanting to be a nurse, he started nursing school. However, that wasn’t his calling and he felt compelled to serve his country. Ken served in the U.S. Army from 1988-1991 as a combat engineer during Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged and returned back to El Paso. That’s when Ken finally decided on his life’s path. In 1992, he graduated from the El Paso Fire Department training academy and has been on the department 22 years now. Ken is currently the driver on Battalion 6, C shift. On top of being at the other end of 911 calls, Ken is an active volunteer shaping El Paso’s youth. When he became a father, he wanted to make sure his son was always prepared and together they joined the Boy Scouts of America. Ken has been a cub master, trainer, medic, and now scoutmaster over the past seven years, all as a volunteer. Ken was even named “Hero of the Year” by the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte. Today he is a loving husband, dedicated father, and hero to many. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Helping Heroes A Soldier’s Best Friend While most students take textbooks and laptops to class, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Paul Aragon never leaves to school without his four legged companion Zoey. After serving three tours in Iraq, Aragon relies on Zoey, his three-year-old pit-bull mix, to make the good times better and the hard times easier. Zoey mainly helps Aragon with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, something that many veterans have a hard time dealing with upon the return of serving in the military. “She can sense certain pheromones that I give off in certain situations and will paw at me, tug on her leash as to turn my attention on to her rather then what is causing my symptoms to arise,” Aragon said. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Aragon graduated from the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, FL on May 30. Zoey took the stage by his side sporting a dog sized cap and gown. Zoey was presented with a “Paws of Fame” award for the unconditional assistance she provided to Aragon throughout his educational journey which he started back in January of 2012. Zoey will continue to stay by Aragon’s side as he hopes to begin his career as a motorcycle technician here in his hometown of El Paso, TX. The institute’s Student Services Director, Tiffany

commencement ceremony and paints the moment in an uplifting and encouraging way. “The energy and excitement was contagious for Paul and Zoey but also for every guest and graduate. It was the first time we have done this at our commencement ceremony so it was groundbreaking,” Johnson said. Johnson along with many other faculty and staff members had an admiration for the relationship between Paul and Zoey. When the duo crossed the graduation stage in May, everyone who took the journey with them was enthusiastic to witness the special recognition that the two received. “I found the relationship encouraging and positive as it supported Paul in his educational pursuit. After being in the military, many veterans need additional support to adjust to civilian life. Paul relied on Zoey to help him and after time, he did not need to bring Zoey to campus every day which was also very important to show his growth and comfort level at MMI,” said Johnson. 66

July, 2014 Johnson, in conjunction with the institute’s public relations agency agreed on this recognition for Zoey, and thought it was very special to have this at the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, Aragon was just as surprised as Zoey. Aragon explains how Doreen Overstreet, a public relations representative of the institute, contacted him via e-mail for Zoey’s measurements. Aragon had no idea that these measurements were

Their qualifications are stringent; all dogs must be over a year old, complete an annual veterinary exam, pass a modified Canine Good Citizen test, and finally be assessed by a certified TDI evaluator in regards to temperament and training. As a non-profit, TDI depends on membership dues and donations to continue their mission of service and therapy. “We offer many services,” Susan Grizich, the director for El Paso’s local chapter of TDI, explains. “[From] our Tail Waggin’ Tutor (TWT) program, visiting nursing homes, hospitals, home visits, shelters, hospice, disaster stress relief dog www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Whether at a school, college, shelter, nursing home, hospital, or helping survivors of a natural disaster or traumatic event, we volunteer our time and our amazing dogs to help the community.” Therapy Dogs International registers all breeds of dog – it doesn’t matter if they have a pedigree or were a rescue, so long as they have the appropriate temperament and can pass their evaluations. As of 2012, about 24,750 dog and handler teams were registered with TDI, and the number continues to grow. Their dog and handler teams are spread across all 50 states and even populate some of Canada. Distinctive from assistance and other service dogs, all TDI dogs wear a specific yellow tag to indicate that they are a therapy dog, and also use red leashes, collars and harnesses to make them easily identified. International is Chapter 225, and is comprised of local volunteers dedicated to providing education, emotional support and other aid to the community through their canine partners. The list of services that TDI provides is nearly endless; their creativity in finding ways to use therapy dogs in all situations is astounding. One of their most unique programs – and one that our local chapter is very involved in – is the “Tail Waggin’ Tutor” program. This program targets children who have difficulty reading and have developed self-esteem issues because of it. TDI has found that the comfort of a dog, who cannot judge their ability, significantly improves their reading ability as they relax and are able to simply focus on the book. When asked about the most rewarding part of their work, Grizich has a ready answer: “You know the feeling you get when you first see the dogs, you smile and your mood lightens. Seeing people experience that is amazing. Also when we’ve worked with a child for the whole school year of them coming to read to our therapy dogs 70

and seeing the improvement and watching them increase their reading skills and actually look forward to reading is also an amazing and rewarding experience. Many studies have shown that therapy dogs have a positive effect on emotional well-being and happiness. TDI visits are always free, and their handlers are flexible and can work individually with any institution. We are lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate group of handlers here in El Paso; if you are interested in getting involved with Therapy Dogs International or in seeking their services, visit www.tdi-dog.org for contact information!

The bustling & Booming Business of pet care
I
f you’ve been to just about any store in town – you’ve probably noticed that pet care is booming more than ever before. Not only are more services and products being offered, but these items are more creative, more innovative and more varied than ever before. From bedazzled collars, specialized water bottles, Furminator fur brushes, to luxury items like pet beds and grooming supplies, the market for pets has never been better. People are also dedicating a large sum of time and resources with DIY projects and art for their pets. And it doesn’t stop there. If you’ve seen various pet services advertized you’ve probably noticed that people are putting a lot of thought into the social health of their pets; with doggy day care for your furry friend to socialize with other dogs, to pet birthday parties, and other social events,
dogs are becoming more like children for their human counterparts. This is even more apparent with research and increased amounts of attention being paid to pet healthcare, with holistic medicine practices and more pet food products dedicated to giving dogs and cats alike a cleaner diet. Altogether, people are simply obsessed with their four-legged friends.
Pampered Pets; Products to Enrich Your Pet’s Life (and maybe yours, too!) For starters, I haven’t been to a single store that sells home décor without seeing pet beds. As simple as it sounds, people simply want to provide their pets with a cushy place to rest their heads, and lets face it, most dogs and cats sleep anywhere from 18-20 hours a day. Giving them a comfy place to rest their furry paws is the least you can do to give them a good night’s (and day’s) rest. The second product I have seen is an increased number of water and food bowls from trendy dishes with chalk so you can write cute messages for them to downright opulent and ornate dishes that even give your pet the power to “press here” for water. There are also more pet-conscious toys on the market. With brands like Kong blazing the high-end dog and cat toy lines with innovative creations that peek your pets interest like never before, there are more ways to spend an afternoon outside together. . . . And people aren’t just buying these products. Many people having taken to websites like Pinterest to make their pets items to enrich their homes with a more personal touch. From compound cat apartments to DIY pet pools and even art to immortalize their pets, home décor is embracing dogs and cats in a whole new way.

Doggie Socialites Sorry cats, but this category has gone to the dogs. We all know that dog parks have been one of the biggest fads of the last few years – El Paso in particular has installed three off leash dog parks across the city (Pebble Hills Dog Park, Eastwood Dog Park and Westside Community Rec Center Dog Park) – but “socializing” your dog has gone to a whole new level. Sites like Julian’s Doggie Day Care, Southwest Animal Care and Glamour Pooch have taken to offering services like doggie day care to enable your pet to run and play with other pets during the day while you are out at work or running errands. Aside from that, dogs are even welcomed at many of the city’s patio restaurants throughout town (like Ripe Eatery and Hope & Anchor), where they will even be offered their own bowl of water. Celebrations have also taken the canine species by storm. Today people have even taken doggie birthday parties to the next level by not only having specialty cakes made (most with peanut butter, carrots or other dog-friendly ingredients) but also throwing all out birthday parties for them.

Pet Health Brands like Blue (a dog food brand for dogs and cats) has started marketing food products that contain gluten-free ingredients for pets. After significant research showing that certain dog and cat food brands have caused cancer and other diseases in animals, owners are wising-up to the food they are putting into their pet’s bodies. Holistic medicine for pets that have health problems has also taken off. Aside from chipping and vaccinating animals, vets have taken pet health to the next level by encouraging petowners to engage in other preventative measures like heartworm medicine, and vitamins. Holistic vets have even begun offering treatments like acupuncture and other “natural healing remedies for pets with allergies or other serious health conditions.

nimals can bring such joy, humor and life to our homes. When considering a new
companion, the Humane Society of El Paso is a wonderful and holistic place to
start. The largest and oldest no-kill shelter in El Paso, HSEP has served the community for over 66 years. That legacy has been spent sheltering unwanted or homeless pets, preventing animal cruelty, and removing rabid or sick animals from El Paso’s streets. As a private
non-profit, HSEP relies solely on donations, adoption and service fees, fundraising events and grants; they don’t receive any government funding as they provide this service to our city. As

they have taken in 3,435 unwanted animals in 2014 alone, and on average it costs $25 per animal per day to provide them a safe and healthy shelter, their reliance on support from the community is really quite amazing. The Humane Society of El Paso provides a number of wonderful services, one of which is spaying or neutering every pet before it is released to new owners. This is in accordance with state law and also the philosophy of the HSEP, desiring to keep the number of unwanted pets down and the number of safe, healthy homes up. Other services include: surrendering your pet, microchipping your

If you have adopted from the HSEP the classes are free, but they only have space for 20 parents, so make sure to sign up ahead of time by calling 532-6971 ext. 104 or emailing help.HSEP@gmail.com. El Paso has struggled with the number of unwanted, abandoned or homeless pets on its streets for decades; every year about 18,000 dogs and cats are euthanized due to overpopulation. One of the biggest problems is the lack of spaying and neutering, which leads to unexpected litters and much bigger issues. Pets Alive-El Paso is a non-profit that works to provide free spaying and neutering to pet parents that can’t afford it, and hopes in this way to reduce the number of innocent animal that must be put down. They offer free vouchers for owners that meet federal

low-income standards, and these vouchers are taken by most veterinarians in place of a spaying/neutering fee. There are also several low-cost, safe options for pet owners that need to sterilize their pets but don’t meet the requirements for Pets Alive. The Pet Care-A-Van is a mobile clinic that provides the service at a lower cost and on a first come, first serve basis. The Mobile Pet Vet and the Paws N’ Hooves Mobile Vet Clinic also provide similar services, and all of them offer vaccines and microchips as well as spaying and neutering. Our community is incredibly fortunate to have organizations such as the Humane Society of El Paso and Pets Alive-El Paso working tirelessly to keep our pets safe, happy and healthy. If you’re thinking of adding to your family with an animal companion, make sure to check your adoption options, and always spay or neuter! The result can be a lifelong companionship and a help to animals across El Paso.

How to Train Your Pet | By: BRITTANY SAWREY |
80
www.thecitymagazineelp.com
July, 2014
c l i c k e r t r a i n yo u r p e t
Do you want a more obedient, bettertrained pup? Do you wish your cat would come to its name? Many pet owners wish that they knew a more efficient way to train their furry friends, but are intimidated by phrases like “clicker training” and “operant conditioning.” No more! This easy guide can get you started with your own animal companion. www.thecitymagazineelp.com
The Background Many have heard of Ivan Pavlov and his famous dogs: a bell would sound before Pavlov fed his dogs, and eventually the dogs became so accustomed to the sound that they would begin salivating simply at the sound of the bell. Decades later, another scientist named B.F. Skinner coined the term “operant conditioning,” which simply means that a behavior can be increased or decreased through rewarding or punishing that behavior. These two theories led to what many call “clicker training.”
1. Click-Treat Start by picking up a clicker from your local pet store; these are under $5, and you can often get them for $1! Then make sure you have some of your pet’s favorite treats. With the clicker in one hand and the treats in the other, give your pet one treat at a time. Each time it takes a treat from you, click the clicker. The goal is to have the sound of the clicker be synonymous with getting a treat – when they hear the ‘click,’ they know they’re about to be rewarded. How do you test when this stage is complete? If, at the sound of the clicker, your animal looks around for a treat, you know they’ve got it! 81
c l i c k e r t r a i n yo u r p e t
July, 2014
2. Capture the Behavior Once your pet understands what the sound of the clicker means, it’s time to “capture” whatever behavior you’re trying to train. We’ll use training your dog to sit as an example. Whether it’s by slowly moving a treat over their head (they will often naturally sit in order to keep watching the treat), having a helper push their bottom down to a sitting position, or simply waiting for the dog to sit on its own, you should click the clicker as soon as their hindquarters touches the ground. This should immediately be followed by a treat. Continue this process until the dog is offering the sitting behavior more often.
3. Add a Cue Cues can be verbal or physical – in the example above, you can either say “sit” or you can make a hand motion. When you know your dog is about to sit, give your cue, the click and reward. Your animal will slowly start to associate the cue with the behavior, and you can then use the cue to initiate the behavior. You know that the cue is working if, when it’s given, the behavior follows. For example, if you say “sit” and your dog immediately sits, you know your cue has been learned!

4. Variable Rewards Once your animal is presenting the desired behavior after a cue is given, it’s time to wean them off of constant reward. After all, you don’t want to always need a clicker and treats just to get your dog to sit! Start to reward less often, and change your rewards; instead of always giving treats, start to give praise or physical affection. You want your animal to continue to present the behavior because they know they will occasionally get rewards, even if it isn’t every time.
5. Generalize it Now it’s time to ask for your pet’s desired behavior in new locations and at different times. Try asking for the behavior in a different room of the house, on a walk or when more people are around. You can feel confident that your pet knows the behavior when they can present it wherever, and whenever! This is by no means an exhaustive guide, but it should get you started with your animal companions. For those that are interested in a more technical and complete understanding of clicker training, I would suggest “Don’t Shoot the Dog” by Karen Pryor; Pryor takes you from a complete novice to an advanced trainer in no time. Now go get training!

Animals and Critters of the Southwest | By: MEAGAN KINLEY |

Living in the Chihuahuan desert, it’s easy to assume that there isn’t a l arge p opul ation of exotic animals living outside the walls of the El Paso Zoo. After all it’s the desert. What kind of creatures would choose to endure these painful temperatures El Paso and the Chihuahuan desert are notoriously known for? But despite the heat and foreboding conditions of our desert climate, living among us are an unbelievably varied group of animals you may not realize are here. Here is a short list of some Native El Pasoans who may surprise you . . .
Kit Fox Most people think that foxes only live in forested regions; however there is a species of fox, the Kit Fox (or Swift Fox) to be exact, who hangs his hat here in the Trans Pecos region of Texas. For the untrained observer, these small mammals if spotted in the wild, may even appear to look like a small dog running through the open desert’s sand dunes. Interestingly enough, the Kit Fox hardly needs to drink any water to survive. These amazing carnivores rely on their efficient digestive tract, which absorbs every morsel of moisture they need to live.
Javelina While feral pigs are scarce in the city limits, you may spot one of these wild hogs near Transmountain Road or in remote areas near Anthony, New Mexico. Interestingly enough these pigs are the descendents of imported European domesticated hogs that escaped or were released for sport. These hogs are traditionally pest animals and spend their free time destroying gardens and vegetation.

El Paso is home to many of these bodacious builders; especially in areas like the Upper Valley where the Rio Grande waters flow. Most people don’t realize that beavers are very social creatures. They live in large families, and mating pairs are monogamous and stay together their entire lives.

It seems entirely possible that upon retiring, Old McDonald left this dairy in charge of tending to all the animals on his farm. Well, all but one. There are those who notice and even comment on the fact that the only cow to be found anywhere around the Licon Dairy farm is stuffed and on display inside the store for all to see. This particular cow was the last to remain on the property before actions were taken in 2003 to remove all dairy farms from the county. Though the ban has since been lifted, the cows owned by the Licon family remain at the dairy’s property just under 40 miles southeast of San Elizario outside Ft. Hancock. There is some interest within the family to have the cows come home. Still, there are other family members who believe the added expense of relocating the bovine may

turn out to be too expensive. The younger kids might enjoy passing the time horsing around on the playground and playing a game of tetherball, or taking one of the pedal boats around the pond while mom and dad attempt to get a few catfish on a line for dinner. There is a $12 charge per fishing pole and a limit of three fish can be taken home. Catch and release fishing is not allowed. A family can make an entire day out of all the things to do at the Licon Dairy, but the one thing that started it all is what keeps its customers

orders shipped to them nationwide. Products available include their original Azadero cheese, in both slices or in a solid chunk. There is a Queso Jalapeño -- basically the Queso Azadero with slices of jalapeño for a little kick. During the cooking process, the Azadero cheese creates a side product know as Whey, or Suero De Sal. Commonly, Suero De Sal is used as a substitute for different types of cooking oils. The packages of cheese start at $4 and a quart of whey is $2. The Licon Dairy’s products and attractions have been appreciated by individuals from all over the country such as Salt Lake City, Utah, Las Vegas, Nevada, Chino, California, Denver, Colorado and Gainesville, Florida just to name a few. Judging by many of the reviews easily found online, people have experienced its charm and found the appeal of this family owned gem. If one is interested enough, arrive before noon and watch the process of making the different cheeses from a large window. Walkthroughs of the room where cheese production takes place are allowed, provided you phone the store and give them advanced notice. Take a friend, take the kids. Most importantly take a cooler to keep everything you buy fresh. It will prove to be disappointing if you leave the farm empty handed. www.licondairy.com www.facebook.com/pages/Licon-DairyInc/249504411836808

hotographers can sometimes become banal, coming in masses and all proclaiming stellar work. It’s definitely a challenge to find one that brilliantly stands out. Fortunately, our fellow El Pasoan David Quintanilla is one of the rare cases. David Quintanilla is a former El Paso
based photographer/designer who now resides in California where he continues to further his artistic venture. His avant-garde productions have twined bold, pop-art aesthetics with a remonstrance to the ordinary. From photographing all walks of life to adapting a new styling of producing his art by collaborating it with furniture, David Quintanilla is surely making a good name for himself and his hometown El Paso as he sets a different tone for modern photography.
Quintanilla’s ardor for art began as an early onset. “I have always considered myself an artist,” said Quintanilla. “When I was a child, I drew and painted often. When most kids were playing soccer or swimming during summer breaks, I was enrolled in art classes at the www.thecitymagazineelp.com

I believe I get my fascination for color from my Mexican upbringing. Being raised Catholic introduced me to artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo that forever changed my life and currently are big inspirations in my work. And the colorful graffiti that covered alleys and underpasses gave me my love and appreciation for street art, color, unconventionalism and pop art.” To contrast conventionalism, Quintanilla has recently ventured into the venue of furniture, integrating his photographs with chairs. “I created a line of original one-of-a-kind photography chairs to display my photos. I began to scour thrift stores and swap meets looking for amazing vintage chairs that needed a second chance at life. I printed my original photography portraits onto high-quality upholstery. The results are these beautiful eclectic chairs and custom handmade eco-friendly pillows I call ‘THE Q COLLECTION,’” Quintanilla said. Although he now resides in California, Quintanilla keeps El Paso close to his artistic heart. “I will always continue to be motivated by El Paso. It’s in my blood.”

The Beer Soap Company Boris Beer Soap Made With Baltika No.3 Pale Ale There is a fine art to creating a delicious craft beer, but when I heard that there was a company that was prepping soap spiked with your favorite malted beverage I was shocked. It sounds kind of strange to bathe in bubbles of brew, but the sediments found in beer are actually loaded with tons of vitamins and nutrients. These alcoholic suds have been found to help clear up acne and unevenness in the skin from ingrown hairs by balancing the oils of your skin. Patchouli, Citrus Peel, Campfire, Indonesian Teakwood, and Amber are infused into the bar and wont leave you smelling like you just fell off the wagon. It is recommended for use on the body and hair, but can also be used to whip up a killer shave lather. www.thebeersoapcompany.com - $6.75

July, 2014 Many adults travel to Disney parks to appease children, making their vacation a very expensive, and quasi-religious, sacrifice. Couples and singles typically opt for the romantic simulacra of Las Vegas over a childinfested Disney adventure. All the while, many adults skim over the immense luxury and relaxation that awaits them at a Disney park. You do not have to be a child or have children to plan a Disney vacation. What Disney parks, particularly Disney World, have to offer go far beyond an hour-long line for It’s a Small World, an over-priced hotdog, and a signature from Mickey Mouse. Even the most intense Disney cynic cannot help but grin as they walk down Main Street U.S.A towards the towering fairytale castle: little girls in their Disney princess’ gowns coo at the cake-like scaffolding of Cinderella’s chambers and little boys with swords and loud yawps run for Adventure Land. The air drips with happiness, relief, and the scent of cotton candy. The whole notion of Disney World is romantic; Walt Disney wanted to create a space where anyone could go to escape the numbing realities of day-to-day life and stumble into the fantasmic world of childhood imagination. This return to imagination without judgment is pure romance, after all like Walt said, we are all just kids with new skin and evolved language. Time in Disney World can be chaotic, crowded, and noisy. As you return to a childlike state of mind, it is inevitable as every detail inside the park is wired to make you do so, you will ride the rollercoaster of emotions that a child encounters. Ruckus laughter can quickly shift to frustration then into sadness and then back into contentedness. However, the more planning and research you do, the less stomach drops and sharp turns you will encounter.

Here are some steps to guide you into a luxurious return to your primordial need for believing what goes in your head is a reality: • Two (or more) months before your trip: o Go to Disneyworld.disney.go.com. Avoid third party sites, as the financial difference will be minimal if even differential. Disney is known for their brilliant customer service, it is worth utilizing. • Book a five to eight day package of hotel stay with park-hopper tickets. • Once you have booked your package, download the official Disney World application on your smart phone. It is a convenient way to organize and plan your vacation. o Hotels to avoid: If financially possible avoid all Disney Value Resorts, The Disney Contemporary Resort – unappealing and bland especially when considering the price point, and any Disney Deluxe Villa due to party size. o Top hotels: Without hesitation I recommend Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge; the hotel itself and pool are beautiful, it houses one of the top restaurants in the entire park (Jiko), and you only need to step onto your balcony to see zebras and giraffes grazing the savannas. Other hotels for consideration: Disney’s Port Orleans, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and Disney’s Grand Floridian. Like all suggestions listed here, these resorts tend to be more adult centered and serene. • One (or more) month before your trip: o The key for allowing Disney World to be, nearly, stress free (remember the rollercoaster) are in these key words: Research, Reservation, and Fast-Pass. • Research to find what attractions and restaurants intrigue you, make reservations based on what park area you will spend your day, and arrange your Fast-Pass around your reservations. o It is vital, seriously, to take a day off and pamper yourself: spend the day at a pool or a spa and go to a nice dinner. Do not try to cram everything into your trip; you will only torture your travel-mate and your feet, it is called Disney World after all. • Organizing based on park: o Magic Kingdom: explore for 1 & ½ days or 2 days • Use Fast-Pass for: Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Railroad, Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train, Wishes Nighttime Spectacular, Splash Mountain, Jungle Cruise. • Non Fast-Pass Must See: PhilharMagic, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Journey of The Little Mermaid, Electrical Light Parade, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, The Hall of Presidents. • Dining: Be Our Guest Restaurant’s (perfect for lunch to avoid impossible dinner reservations) roast beef sandwich and The Grey Stuff cupcake are delicious, The Friar’s Nook for truffle Mac n’ Cheese covered hot dogs, Prince Eric’s Village market for fresh fruit snacks, Liberty Tree Tavern for an outrageous portion of a Thanksgiving themed meal, California Grill (in Disney’s Contemporary Resort and has a dress code) for incredible sushi along with a sunset and Wishes Nighttime Spectacular view, Victoria and Albert’s ($$$) is a AAA Five Diamond award recipient since 2000 and will be a romance-filled culinary experience that will leave you speechless (very specific dress code and perfect dinner for a day off). o Epcot: explore for 1 day • Fast-Pass: Soarin’, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Mission: Space, Test Track, Maelstrom. • Non Fast-Pass Must See: Turtle Talk with Crush, O Canada!, Impressions de France, Gran Fiesta Tour, IllumiNations (firework show best seen between UK and France). 128

here’s a saying you are what you eat … and so the saying is also true, for you are what you think. Your thoughts create the life that you are living and you
have the power to create the life you desire. However, there are a few things to consider when manifesting this ideal world. We need to be conscious of what we are saying to ourselves and how we are saying it. Often my clients say, “I want a relationship.” Ok, how about asking the universe for a healthy and loving relationship? Otherwise, the heavens may give you an unemployed bum. Now if you take that statement and tweak it just a bit by saying, “I need a loving and healthy relationship,” then your chances of finding something suitable for you are increased. It is like the old Rolling Stones song “You don’t always get what you want, you get what you need?” If you look up the word “need” in the dictionary, its definition is basically to lack and be without. So why “want” a relationship? It is also helpful to be sure of what you want. I suggest this exercise to people looking for a relationship. I ask them to write down 10 things

Signs You’re With The Person
YOU SHOULD MARRY | By: JANNET BUSTILLOS |
We all know how difficult the dating game can be, and several of us have had to “kiss many frogs” before finding our best match. If you’re in a relationship now, and are curious to see if that person is “the one,” here are some signs that may help you decide if wedding bells will be in your future. 1. Once there was a dog named Smokey. And Smokey loved a boy named Sam. Every day, Smokey would play with Sam. Smokey helped Sam learn how to walk. And Smokey helped Sam to see. Sam got glasses, and so did Smokey. When Sam’s mother and father went to work, and Sam’s brother August would go to school, Smokey would play with Sam. At night, Smokey slept with Sam. In the spring, they would go to the park and get ice cream. Smokey’s favorite flavor was chocolate. In the summer, they would fish in the stream. In the fall, they would play hide and seek. In the winter, they would make snowmen. Smokey loved the snow. Winter was his favorite time of the year. Smokey even helped Sam when he learned how to ski. Sam loved Smokey. And Smokey loved Sam. Then one spring, Smokey didn’t feel like going to the park. In the summer, he didn’t feel like fishing. In the fall, Smokey became sick. “Come on, Smokey,” Sam said. “It is nearly winter; you will feel better when it starts to snow.” “Sam, I am very old. I was old when you were born. You may not understand, but it is time for me to die. It will be hard to say goodbye but I won’t be far away. I will be a part of everything you see and everything you see will be a part of me,” Smokey explained. “And you can think of me, every time you see ice cream, or a fish, or a leaf and especially when you see snowflakes.” “Where are you going? I want to go, too,” Sam said as he cried. “I am going to heaven,” Smokey said. “And, in a long, long, long, long time, you will go there, too.” The next day Smokey died and Sam was sad. “What happens when you die?” Sam asked his parents. Well, no one knows for sure, but I think it is as simple as just walking through a door,” Sam’s mother said. “Why doesn’t anyone know what happens?” Sam asked. “Sam, you know how you like surprises?” Sam’s father asked. “You mean a surprise like opening a present?” Sam asked. “Exactly,” Sam’s father said. “I think God likes surprises, too, and we aren’t supposed to know.” “Where is Smokey? Sam asked his parents. “I think Smokey is in heaven, “ Sam’s mother replied. “What is heaven?” Sam asked. “Heaven is a place you believe in,” Sam’s father said. “Where is it?” Sam looked around as he asked. “Some people say it is over the rainbow. Others feel it is right above us in the sky. It doesn’t really matter. The important thing is to have faith it exists. I think anyone who is in heaven is never far from us, as long as we keep them alive in our heart by remembering them,” Sam’s mother shared. “Well, I think it snows there. I think it snows in heaven,” Sam said as he walked through the back door. And just as he looked up, it started to snow. An All-American Celebration | By: SOFFIA WARDY |

July, 2014
July 4th is the 185th day of the year with the exception of leap year, which leaves only 180 days left till the end of the year. It is also the time of year that the Earth is farthest from the sun, but these are just fun facts. To every American, it is a celebration of the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress back on July 4, 1776. Fireworks, barbecues, parties, picnics and parades will occur all over the USA. However the evening is always what we look forward to the most. My family celebrates by creating a fantastic all-American feast that we share with up to 60 friends. Our menu often includes, Chasen’s Chili - inspired by the legendary Chasen’s Hollywood Eatery, (recipe available at soffiawardy.com), fried chicken, gourmet burgers and hot dogs, and a salsa bar featuring all of the Amen Wardy salsa’s, my Dad’s famous Spicy Corn & Crab Dip (recipe available at soffiawardy.com), Iced champagne, wine, beer and fizzy beverages and the most amazing desserts ever.
One of our favorite places to celebrate is in Aspen, Colorado. Festivities include a good old fashion home town parade, a U.S. Air Force jet fly-by, concerts, a kid’s bicycle rodeo, and weather permitting spectacular fireworks over Aspen Mountain.
We always watch the parade from the outdoor patio at (Nobu), Matsuhisa’s annual barbecue…yes one of Aspen’s best sushi restaurants grills the best burgers and brats (but only on the 4th). We drape ourselves in red, white and blue … don party favors and enjoy the parade from the best seats in town. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The urge to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing out “I’m Proud to be an American” crosses my mind every year that we hang and light the neon flag above the entry gate. Try Reasoning With Child About Enforcing Rules
| By: JOANN WARDY |
Being a parent is never easy. Having to enforce rules and regulations can be trying at best. When I was going up and challenging my mother, my father would explain the reasons for their concern. He asked me to put my hand out; palm facing up, and he explained that life was like the palm of my hand and that there were many roads to take. He said, “We are not smarter than you are. We have only been here longer, and we have had the opportunity to travel up and down each road (as he ran his finger up and down each of mine), and we know what you will find at the end of each road. We want to help you avoid any mistakes that can ruin your chances of happiness. It is always easier for a child to respond when give a reason for the rules.

GET THE PERFECT “BEACH BODY” | By: SOUTHWEST PLASTIC SURGERY |
Liposuction From those undesirable love handles in men to the abnormal body fat deposits throughout the physique in women, liposuction can reshape and contour your figure. Liposuction is not a weight reduction technique but rather a body-contouring tool that is used alone or in combination with other procedures to reshape the whole body or certain areas of interest. Advanced techniques of liposculpting also allow for the creation of definition to

Your business is not just your pride and joy but a major source of income for you, your family, and your employees. While the business is a large part of your life today, the reality is that someday you may want to retire, step back from the business to concentrate on new ventures or you could become disabled or unexpectedly pass away. What would happen to your business if you were no longer around to run it? Putting an effective succession plan into place allows you to take the guesswork out of transferring ownership, and provides peace of mind that your business, and your family, is taken care of. If you’re like most business owners, you may plan to pass your business on to your family or sell it to co-owners. 90% of the 21 million U.S. businesses are family owned. Yet only 30% of family-run companies today succeed into the second generation, and only 15% survive into the third (Source:

Just as it was when you started your business, the key to successfully passing your business on is a well thought out plan. A well-designed succession plan can help meet your objectives and address
What constitutes an effective succession plan depends on your particular objectives. Every plan begins with you deciding how you want to transfer your business. Based on those objectives, there are many strategies that can help you assure a smooth and complete transition of your business to new management and can control the tax burden for the new owners. Some of the transfer options to consider are: • Family Limited Partnerships – These partnerships may be appropriate when parents want to maintain some control yet shift income and appreciation to their children. This arrangement may also help consolidate assets and reduce estate taxes.

Red Wolves on March 21. With the Miners being awarded another home game, Adams again made her pitch to sell out the Don Haskins Center. Attendance jumped slightly to 4,703, but more importantly the Miners toppled Saint Mary’s, 76-64, on March 24 to punch their ticket to the WNIT Sweet 16. History was made in the Sweet 16 contest, with a school-record 8,234 fans cheering UTEP on to a 68-60 conquest of Pacific-12 member Colorado on March 28. That standard stood for three days, with a staggering 10,227 fans helping lift the Miners past Washington, another Pac-12 foe, on March 31. That victory propelled UTEP into the Final Four of the WNIT, setting the stage for Adams’ dream to come true. With the Cinderella run captivating the city, Adams’ dream came true with UTEP selling out the Don Haskins Center seven hours prior to tip-off against South Dakota State on April 2, 2014.
