“Over the years, I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”
October, 2017
- Yves Saint Laurent
EDITOR -IN - CHIEF
S
ince it’s our fashion issue, I thought I should first talk about the importance of work-place attire for a minute. We’ve all heard the saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the one you have.” I can’t stress how important it is,
as a business owner, for professionals to invest in key pieces and dress up for not only the job that they have, but the job that they are working towards. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy an expensive wardrobe, it just means to invest in some classic pieces (a black blazer, a nice black skirt, etc.) and mix those with inexpensive pieces that you can quickly find. With that being said, our cover star, fashion designer Megan Fullerton, has accomplished professional edgy attire with the line she is creating. The sleek structure of her designs and the entire motto behind her brand, “A Woman on a Mission,” are exactly what young professionals need in their wardrobe. Having been showcased at Saks Fifth Avenue and the SCAD Museum of Art, Megan living and designing from her showroom in El Paso is something that we should all consider a blessing. In this issue, we also talk about how empowering women in our community (through the Junior League of El Paso) is so crucial to our environment. Also crucial, is the effect that Richard Dayoub has had in our community. If you haven’t heard his name before, he is the long-time president and CEO of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, with a recent resignation announcement. You can read more about him and all the significant things that have occurred in the city under his leadership on page 34. There are so many good stories to read about this month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so look for stories about courage, strength and advice. We also have great fashion advice and beauty tips for both men and women that are must-reads. So, read up on El Paso as you sit back and flip through these pages.

with designs, magazines, patterns and two mannequins. Her spring collection, on a rack behind me, is bright, colorful and demands attention. Though she has had a successful run as of lately, her journey into the fashion world has not been easy. Before studying fashion, Megan began her college career pursuing a degree as a nurse practitioner while living in her hometown of Atlanta. After starting classes and acting as president for the fashion organization at the university, she had a change of heart and decided to apply to Savannah College of Art and Design. “It was the best and hardest three years of my life,” she recalls. It was there that she learned pattern making, sketching and the fine art of tailoring. Her senior project, a minimalist collection of wearable art that she poured her heart into, was featured at Saks Fifth Avenue in Savannah and was also featured in the SCAD Museum of Art— where Vivienne Westwood (British fashion designer) received the André Leon Tally lifetime achievement award. As Megan talks about her work, her warmth and passion becomes contagious. You can sense the pride that she has for what she creates and you immediately want to root for her.“ [This business] can make or break you. There’s no guidebook.” She smiles then adds, “I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Even after a failed attempt at mass

Richard Dayoub | By: MARIE MOORE photography by: TOMMIE MORELOS |

t’s been 14 years since Richard Dayoub assumed a leading role at the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. He joined as Chief Operating Officer but became President a year later. In 2007, he added CEO to his business card. From the start, his priority was to impact the face and destiny of this city with his organization.
Under Dayoub’s leadership, the chamber sold a Lomaland property (a former Levi Straus facility) retiring chamber debt and grew financial reserves for the chamber and its foundation. They reached an agreement with the city to accept the Star on the Mountain as a gift to the community, ensuring its well-maintained and protected future.
“Meanwhile, chamber volunteers led efforts to transform us from a primarily economic development organization, to one focused on public policy. We’ve evolved into the ‘go to’ organization for public policy issues in our community.”
Connecting the Dots in El Paso’s Business Community www.thecitymagazineelp.com
Dayoub also noted this occurred simultaneously with the responsibility of economic development policy being transferred to El Paso’s Regional Economic Development Corporation (REDco). As a result, the chamber strengthened its credibility in the public policy arena, developing strong working relationships with city, county, state and federal elected/ appointed officials. Most significant was the chamber’s leadership role in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). Without their involvement, Fort Bliss may have been drastically reduced in size. Today, Fort Bliss represents a $6 billion annual infusion into El Paso’s economy. Relationships developed during that period and since remain, affording Dayoub the ability to communicate with top Army leadership in the Pentagon and across the US That translated into a special dinner for Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta being hosted here—a real first for El Paso!

Empowering Women, Improving
Community
Junior League of El Paso, Inc. | By: CLARISSA DE LA TORRE and KIM MCGLONE |
In 1901, the Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements was founded by 19 yearold New York debutante Mary Harriman. Unable to ignore the suffering she observed among immigrants living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, she organized a group of 80 young women to improve child health, nutrition and literacy in those neighborhoods. The passion and dedication of those young women sparked a movement that has become one of the largest and most effective volunteer organizations in the world, the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI). AJLI coordinates 291 Leagues throughout four countries and has a collective membership of over 150,000 women. Together, their dedicated volunteers continue to tackle the toughest and most critical issues facing their communities. As the Junior League of El Paso, Inc. (JLEP) enters into its 85th year of service to the El Paso community, this commitment stays at the forefront through the effective action and leadership of our trained volunteers. In response to input from our El Paso community and direction from our Junior League women, the impact area for our 2017-2018 projects focuses on promoting the awareness and embracing of mental and physical health through projects such as Fresh Beginnings: From Farm to Table, Building Connections, Girls Going the Distance and Spotlight on Mental Health. 42

It’s no secret, cancer is a terrible thing. It is even worse when someone you know and care about finds out they have it. Being on the outside looking in, it can be difficult to see them going through treatments and feeling like there is nothing you could do to help. You both know the chemo treatments are needed, but it doesn’t change the fact the symptoms afterwards can be their own kind of hell. Taking active steps to ease the process is always important, even if it is just to relieve discomfort like nausea. The smallest bits of help can make a big difference. While this is no cure, this recipe can make that battle a little less difficult.

inerva Genetics, or rather the idea for it, first came to El Paso six years
ago, when co-founders Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Bryan moved here and Dr.
Mitchell worked as the senior director of genomics at Texas Tech University. After working for Texas Tech for three years, and for a clinical diagnostic lab in Las Cruces for nearly two, Dr. Mitchell decided that El Paso needed a clinical diagnostic lab that could offer prompt turn-around times and employ graduate students from UTEP and other local institutions who are frequently forced to move outside El Paso to find employment. Being self-funded, Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Bryan wanted to prove their metal by utilizing their own personal savings, along with working with good friends out of Houston, to get started. Being a start-up of six, who consider themselves jacks of all trades, Minerva Genetics

like breast cancer, they might fear whether or not it will affect their own life as well. With this being the case, this testing can also mean the difference between catching these diseases just in time or catching them when it is too late. This type of information can help make decisions on whether extreme measures are necessary, like mastectomies, or whether a simple additional visit every year is all that is needed.

Next

Sequencing, that is not the case. NGS provides a clinical diagnostic setting that has ushered in an era of personalized medicine that was impossible in the past, doing what took fifteen years to analyze in one day. Because of this, Minerva Genetics can provide inexpensive tests for patients. Minerva Genetics was built because of the local need for better, faster and more personalized medicine. NGS lends itself to offer fast and comprehensive genetic analysis, which can improve treatment safety and minimize health care costs. Even as a start-up faculty, they have already made world-changing developments in the medical field. For the last several years, Dr. Bryan’s research has focused primarily on treating an aggressive and commonly misdiagnosed cancer called angiosarcoma. His research into the repurposing of propranolol as treatment has had huge impacts on patient survival and is now considered the standard of care in the European Union. Wanting to make similar impacts here, Dr. Bryan is currently working on publishing additional work in this area of research in the next few months. Despite these advancements, Minerva Genetics is still looking to flourish, and are looking for www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Dr. Bryan has already begun to cherry pick top students at UTEP. This method is how he found their current clinical analyst, Thuraieh Khayou. After seeing Dr. Bryan’s brilliance and passion, Thuraieh asked to volunteer for the company and was later offered a part time job while she finishes her master’s degree at Texas Tech.

businesses like Minerva Genetics. “It all starts with a thought like Minerva Genetics. We must support something that starts locally, especially in a place like El Paso. Nothing is more beautiful than something that blooms in the desert.” Seeing the passion and intelligence first hand has driven Thuraieh to make El Paso healthier. This is what ultimately makes Minerva Genetics unique. They have room to grow with such passionate goals. With quotes like, “If you can dream it you can do it” by Walt Disney and “Starting and growing a business is as much about the innovation, drive and determination of the people who do it as it is about the product they sell,” by Elon Musk being painted outside Minerva’s office space, there’s no shortage of motivation. In the end, what the team would like the people of El Paso to remember when they think of Minerva Genetics, is that health comes from knowledge. Having a clear understanding, even of your genetic composition, can lead to better health for not only you, but for those who love you.

Breast Cancer Myths A

bout one in eight US women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Breast cancer death rates are higher than those of any other cancer for women in the US, and besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. When it comes to breast cancer, it is extremely important to distinguish facts from fiction. Here is the real deal behind some of the most common myths.

In Loving Memory of our client
Crissela Lorraine Ortega February 12, 1980 – September 12, 2017
Slay Beauty By Crissela Ortega On Friday, September 8, 2017, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Crissela Ortega for this showcase. As the only certified micropigmentation specialist in El Paso, this talented artist was also certified in microblading and spray tanning, and was a licensed tattoo artist as well. Crissela also spent 16 years of her productive life in the medical world and had just happily retired from her full-time position to follow her passion for the beauty business. Her vision was to one day bring to our Sun City a one-stop destination for her areas of specialty and to provide local beauty enthusiasts with a novel concept unlike our city’s ever seen. A few short days later, Crissela was suddenly hospitalized and tragically passed from complications. What we’re left with is the memory of a woman who dearly touched our lives. She leaves behind a precious 9-month-old daughter, a handsome 17-year-old son and an adoring mother and family. I’m also left with the memory of an interview that truly left me leaving her salon inspired by her ambition and drive, as well as genuinely grateful for the new and wonderful client I had just made my own. Crissela was an angel on earth who has now gone on to be in her heavenly home. May she rest in peace.

80s 90 | By: KRYSTA AYERS |
Recently, I was sitting at a local bar
with TV screens mounted on the walls. Aside from a sporting event and a
cooking show, a third screen showed music videos from the 80s and 90s to go along with their hip-hop (also R&B)
night. These two decades of music
were profound and quintessential in defining their times—from the funky synth rhythms to the catchy lyrics.
and
The more videos that played, though, I realized that what stood out the most was the fashion. Every outfit was colorful, exciting, expressive and bold.
Taking from these two decades, a lot
of styles have already been brought back (i.e., crop tops, overalls). Looking into the different fashion trends and
things that artists wore, we should definitely take more of those looks into our closets. Here are some 80s and 90s
music video inspired items that we can

TLC “Baby Baby Baby” The 80s and 90s were known for their bright colors. For anyone that ever throws a “90s Party”, you can expect guests to come in with track jackets full of colors and or brightly colored separates. That’s what made things fun and bold. We still see a lot of color-block items in fashion. Since we’re not going to go completely back into time, take this color-block trend in pieces. When you think of bringing the iconic looks of the Fresh Prince or the ladies

9 80s Cameo “Single Life”
There are two major looks we can get from Cameo’s “Single Life” video. There is the edgy, all black with metal details look and then there is the more casual, high-waisted linen pant look. You have to find a balance when implementing the 80s all-black style into your outfit. Keep the metal details subtle, like a skinny belt or simple
spikes on your leather jacket—otherwise you can easily look like Cyndi Lauper or Madonna and that’s not a good look for anyone
right now. The high-waisted linen pants are a much easier item to add to your closet. You’ve probably already seen them all over
the stores and internet. Pair your loose, high-waisted pants with a comfy tee or a more structured top.

90s Mary J. Blige “Reminisce”
In this music video Mary J. sports high-waisted white pants, a yellow bralette and a long flowy button-down. Though we
shouldn’t copy her complete outfit, the long button-down has made its way back and we are here for it. Since it’s October and the weather is changing, this is the perfect thing to add to
your look. WhoWhatWear has a line with great color and pattern options of these. Pair it with some skinny jeans, ankle boots and a simple top and you’re set. If you’re thinking of wearing
the ginormous hoop earring that Mary J. rocks, don’t even think about it—you can leave those in the 90s. If you do want to
rock some hoop earrings though, opt for a thinner version that doesn’t fit around your wrist.
There’s a lot that we can steal from the epic music videos of the 80s and 90s. Next time you’re on YouTube (since MTV doesn’t
play music videos anymore), pay attention to the fashion and take bits and pieces of it to add into your wardrobe. Whether
it’s the bright colors, the oversized jackets or the linen pants and crop top combo, we can bring these fashion trends back with welcoming arms.

t’s hard to believe that before the year 2012 we were blissfully unaware of a little-known technique called highlighting and contouring. Kim Kardashian tweeted a photo of herself pre and post contouring and a new craze was born. Before the Kardashians, before the trend of filtered Instagram selfies and clownish face painting tutorials, highlighting and contouring was a much subtler technique used by many makeup artists and stage performers out of necessity, rather than a desire for a super-sculpted face. The art of highlighting and contouring began as early as the mid-1500s; stage actors would apply chalk and soot to their faces so the audience could read their facial expressions more clearly. Contouring made its way to the film industry in the 1920s with stars like Marlene Dietrich, who was said to believe in accentuating the natural lines of her face with shading and sculpting. Legendary Max Factor released the first step-by-step tutorial on how to contour your face in 1945. In the 1950s actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were photographed featuring subtle contouring and shading techniques. In the 1990s celebrity makeup artist, Kevyn Aucoin, made a subtle sculpted and chiseled face his signature look on clients like Cindy Crawford and Janet Jackson. www.thecitymagazineelp.com
75
October, 2017
Today, highlighting and contouring has turned into a cultural phenomenon with everyone from Instagram and YouTube stars trying out the age-old makeup artist technique. This subtle trend has now turned into something at times a little more garish, but I don’t think this trend is going away anytime soon.
Follow these techniques to subtly and naturally enhance your best features. Contouring is THE anti-aging secret makeup artists use to lift, tighten and give shape to the face when needed. • First, apply a matte contour shade with a light touch just underneath the cheekbones. • Next, shade the rest of the hollows of your face: the sides of the nose (if too wide), the eye sockets and under your jawbone (to decrease the look of a double chin). Highlighting offsets contouring by accentuating areas of your face that naturally catch the light. • Now, apply the highlighter or illuminator just above the contouring you’ve created: upper cheekbones, above the brow bone, the bridge of the nose and just above the lip. • TIP: The more metallic the highlight, the more it can make expression lines on the face more prominent, so use it wisely. For more mature skin, it’s often best to use a shade of foundation or concealer two shades lighter than your skin tone rather than a sparkly highlighter. 76

Remember, too much contouring and you’ll likely be mistaken for a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and too much highlighting will make you look like you fell into a tub of sparkles. Just the right amount of highlighting and contouring and everyone will think you’re a sculpted, lifted, more healthy looking beauty.

Love
October, 2017
The feeling of elation that comes with romantic love is deeply embedded in our brains. Everyone strives to be in a healthy long-lasting relationship in which they feel valued and loved. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist and author of “Anatomy of Love”, has done significant research to help decode some of the toughest questions we have about love. Helen was able to find a connection between processing romantic love and regions of the brain that are linked with drive, craving, obsession and motivation. The results gave her an insight into what makes a relationship last. It is a combination of many things, but ultimately stems down to three basic brain systems for mating and reproduction.
Sex Helen suggests you have sex with your partner. Seems simple right? This may not be a simple task for some, but it is important you set time aside for making love. Incorporating cuddling will boost a sense of attachment that drives up the dopamine system, allowing you to sustain feelings of romantic love.

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified,” Gloria Gaynor, “I Will Survive.” This is the song I was listening to when I received the phone call from my doctor. I don’t remember much about what he said. All I remember were those three devastating words: “You have cancer.” The opening line of Gloria Gayor’s song summed up my exact feeling—petrified. After I hung up the phone, I made a choice. I knew the opposite of fear was courage. I realized that to get through this adventure I would need to surround myself with family and friends who would not only support and encourage me, but would also help me stay in my joy. The deep sorrow of any illness carves a hole into our being, but that hole leaves space for joy. Sorrow and joy are a package deal.
Before with suspicious “freckle”
When one is in your kitchen, the other is asleep on the couch. I learned that joy is an everyday magic—it grounds me, it lifts me, and expands my mind and spirit. And I learned that a daily affirmation helped me to stay in my joy. I would look in the mirror at the scars that six surgeries and 64 stitches left on my face and I would say out loud: “My scars are only skin deep. Cancer cannot break my heart, it cannot rob my spirit, and it cannot touch my soul. Today I choose to stay in my joy.” There were days that were challenging to be joyful. I had a nuclear

Today
Facebook and one of my oldest and dearest friends had posted a video of three men sitting in a cathedral singing, “Let it Be.” This confirmed to me that God/The Universe was always speaking to us, sending us little messages, creating serendipities, reminding us to stop and to breathe. Reminding us to believe in something else, to believe in something more and to remind us that we are never alone. Last month was my one-year cancer-free anniversary. I uncharacteristically did not want a party nor did I celebrate in a grand way. I didn’t buy an expensive item to mark the occasion. Having cancer has changed me. Surviving cancer didn’t give me a fresh start on life; it gave me a chance to understand what it means to live. It wasn’t a challenge to be dealt with, conquered or overcome. I realized a complex view of myself was required to work through my fears and having cancer has provided me a level of maturity I had never before experienced. I am now weathered, solid, shaped by my sorrow and pain as well as by my success and joys. Cancer is a process that allowed me to open doorways and turn the lights on to the inner rooms of my soul. The gratitude I feel will be burned into my consciousness forever. I will never forget it because I will never be the same. And now the darkness is over. In its place is the illumination of a bright new path that lights the way for the rest of my life and for the joy that surrounds me—always. michellecromer.com @emichellecromer michellecromer www.thecitymagazineelp.com

owadays a lot of us have become more health conscious and aware about what goes in our food, but can we honestly find all the information
we need in nutrition labels? While knowing the carbs, proteins, sugar, sodium, etc., might help, there are issues and secrets in the food industry you may not be aware of.
fitness
2. When a product is labeled “low-fat” or “fat-free,” it doesn’t always mean that it’s healthier. When food companies create a reduced-fat version of certain foods, they usually add in extra sugar or sodium to make it taste better. Make sure you read the nutrition facts label
The USDA recently started “The Smart Snacks In School” nutrition standards which set rules on limiting fat, sugar, sodium and calories in the food children can get at school. They have also banned all junk food from vending machines and lunchrooms.
before buying the product. Also, we shouldn’t
1. Sugar causes dependency. In our United States supermarkets, more than three out of every four food items contain added sugar. Food companies are adding this for a reason. In the brain’s reward center, sugar stimulates dopamine, and dopamine drives reward. Feeling a sense of reward makes you crave the feeling again, but
be scared of some fats. Healthy fats can help keep us from feeling hungry and can lessen the risk for heart disease.
To avoid this “health food trap,” buy natural versions of the food with no added sugar and some healthy fats.
because dopamine down-regulates its own receptor, you’re going to need MORE sugar to generate less reward—which will keep on building until you’re eating a whole lot of sugar and getting almost nothing for it. Food companies know that when they add sugar, you’re going to keep coming back for more.
To avoid added sugar, check the label for ingredients ending in “ose”: glucose, sucrose, dextrose, etc., because they are all forms of added sugar.

4. In the U.S. we consume ingredients that are illegal in other countries. For example, BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) are contained in many of our chips, sausages and cereals. foods more often when the packaging had a fun cartoon character on it. The scary part about this is that when kids had to choose based on taste, they preferred the most energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods.
To avoid this, look at labels to ensure those ingredients are not added. There are so many chip and snack options now that are heathier and lack these ingredients.
Thankfully policies and efforts are starting to form to counter this.

GETTING WELL BY FIXING THE CELL | By: DR. DAVID WARDY |
Could invisible toxins be taking your life? You haven’t been feeling well and you can’t figure out why. You have been tested, medicated, and have a diagnosis or two, but you still don’t feel well. Energy is low and you may be having trouble losing those unwanted pounds no matter what you try. Sound familiar? If I just described you, then reading this article right now may offer you the cause and the solution you have been looking for. First, ask yourself two questions: 1. Are you addressing the cause? 2. Are your current methods working? If you answered “No,” you have missed the most common overlooked cause. Conventional methods are not prepared to identify or correct the equivalent of the latest plague: TOXICITY. The craziest part, is toxic people don’t usually know they’re toxic. Symptoms such as headaches, achy joints, problems with teeth and gums, or a sense that your brain is running off half of its power capacity. I’m not done — it goes even further with poor sleep, lack of sex drive, reduced performance, irritability, muscle fatigue and the classic, “I don’t feel well.” These symptoms can all be outcomes of toxic invasion. The good news? There is a way to support your body to remove toxins safely and effectively. Imagine your body as a bucket. These toxins that surround us in daily life are the liquid that slowly fills that bucket. Each day, your body accumulates liquid drop by drop and your bucket becomes full. A drop here or there is no big deal; however, chronic exposure to an onslaught of chemical, physical and emotional stressors fill up your bucket each day and eventually the bucket begins to overflow. It can take decades for your bucket to fill up and overflow but once it does, cellular inflammation is triggered and unwanted symptoms come along with it. To achieve positive health outcomes, detoxification and healing must take place at the cellular level. Our bodies are made up of a community of over 70 trillion cells that have to work together synergistically with great amplitude to achieve optimal performance for your body. The symptoms I listed above are the result of this cellular community being bombarded daily by stressors in our environment. No matter how clean of a lifestyle we try to lead, we are constantly being dosed with toxins from all angles. If you want to get well, then you have to fix the cell. True cellular detox takes place upstream at the cell, all other detox is downstream. Whether you’re having trouble losing weight, experiencing intense lulls of energy, or simply feel the effects of aging, our modern world today ensures that your body is harboring toxins......the key to restore you to your “best” lies in true detoxification of the cell. For more information you can call Wardy Wellness at 915-760-4700 or text the word “TOXICITY” to 44222

heat is a sign of better times to come. The terror of scorching leather seats, the threat of the soles of our shoes melting on the asphalt and the overwhelming bouts of anxiety that no matter how much sunscreen we slather on, the sun’s rays will still manage to sear our exposed skin—all of these are things we can bid farewell to, if only for a few months. However, summer style really doesn’t go away, especially in our neck of the woods, er, desert. Transition your look seamlessly into the cooler months, only this time, expect to have it accompanied by the breeze-induced goosebumps.

EL PA SO | By: ROBBIE AARON |
Today was the best day of my life,
El Paso native Lazaro “Ziggy” said.
Ziggy, 11, whose wish to be manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers for a day and was featured on ESPN’s “My Wish” series in July, has battled a progressive muscular disease since he was born. A life-long Dodgers fan, Ziggy shouted, “This is our year!” as he rode in a limo with his family to Dodger Stadium. With his lineup card in hand, Ziggy was ready and excited to meet his favorite team and watch his favorite player, Clayton Kershaw, on the mound that day. Ziggy arrived at the stadium at 2:30 p.m. and was met by the ESPN crew. They put a mic pack on Ziggy and the fun began; they toured the stadium and experienced the spectacular view from the press box. Ziggy’s eyes were wide as he walked down the same hallways that the players walk through on game-day. There were posters, photos, Gold Glove awards, Silver www.thecitymagazineelp.com

But then the S&P 500 started clawing its way back and ended 2010 within 20% of the October 9, 2007, close.3 If the impulse to be safe keeps investors out of the stock market, it may also keep them from taking advantage of the potential returns the stock market has to offer.

Changing Lead The asset class that performs best one year doesn’t necessarily do so the next.2
Cash alternatives — the most conservative of the three investment classes — outperformed stocks and bonds only once during the 20year period.2 A sound investing strategy considers short-term volatility without losing sight of long-term objectives. A sound strategy can involve diversifying capital between different classes of investments. That way, under-performance in one type of asset may be offset by the performance of another. Bear in mind, though, that diversification and asset allocation are approaches to help manage investment risk. They do not eliminate the risk of loss if a security price declines. The asset class that performs best one year may not do so the next. Diversifying your holdings among several different investment types and understanding that asset classes can move in and out of favor may help you manage the risk in your investment portfolio.
