If after an honest look, your instincts appear not to be a gift you were blessed with, then trust a stylist. An Interview With A Local Business Woman | By: NEISSHA KING |

Melissa Maese

Owner, The Pizza Joint The Pizza Joint … One Slice at a Time Born and raised in El Paso, Melissa truly has a love for her city. As a 2007 graduate of UTEP, she desired to offer pizza by the slice in the local area. After being laid off from MillerCoors in 2009, that desire became a reality when she opened the doors to the first Pizza Joint in 2011 and her second location in late 2014. Here she shares some of her most valuable lessons she’s learned along the way. The biggest risk I’ve taken: Being in business … you never feel 100% secure. I still feel

“Be Legendary, Not Ordinary.”

somewhat uneasy at times. When I first started, I didn’t know anything about the business at all, I was simply an avid lover of pizza. I didn’t come from an entrepreneurial background nor had I worked in a pizza joint. I just loved pizza and wanted to bring pizza by the slice to El Paso. Life lessons to remember: The importance of time management, you have to practice selfdiscipline. I would rather get lost in the kitchen than in paperwork. Hiring the right people is key. It was very hard that first year because I didn’t have much experience in the hiring process. Lastly, you have to pay yourself first. You’re the face of the business and without you, there won’t be a business. You’ll never regret: Following my own path. It was a risky and scary decision, but I am glad I followed my gut and I’m grateful that The Pizza Joint has become a favorite place for so many.

MATTHEW ABRAHAM director of make up artistry

I’m glad that I’ve never: Thrown in the towel. You have to have faith in yourself and your community to support your business. There were times when I felt exhausted, but I believed in The Pizza Joint and what it could be. My every-day mantra: There is no crying in pizza! That goes for me and my team. It’s a fun food, and we have fun serving up those pies. So when they’re having a bad day or when I don’t

want to be stuck in paperwork, we remember … there’s no crying in pizza! The moment I knew I made it: In 2013, after paying off my first loan, I was able to open up the second location in the expanding downtown area. (The initial startup funding was a combination of money from my parents and former business partner.) My greatest joy: The customers, they really do love the pizza and appreciate the love we put into it. Also, the artists within the community: those who have chosen to exhibit their pieces

at our locations, and the musicians who are always willing to share their talents. It is a joy to be able to bring El Paso together. The Legacy She Desires to Leave Behind The Pizza Joint! I hope it truly becomes a staple for many years to come.

Chelsea Handler even talked about Payan during the opening monologue to one of her shows, thanking him and demanding her audience to “go buy one” of his dresses. “I have been a fan of Chelsea Handler since her show started,” Masai said. “I have all of her books and for her to mention me on her show was honestly the most surreal moment of my life. She is such a wonderful human and has such a big heart. For her to wear my dress to the Oscars was the highlight of my year.” Though we can’t all be Chelsea Handler, Payan says he designs for the same girl with every collection. “She is a strong confident woman that appreciates the value of hard work.” And that is not all. Payan was also the creative director for Metal Noir, a fine jewelry brand. Earlier this year in February, the brand had Payan design a ready to wear collection that was showcased during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter show. For many designers, being able to have a runway show is a hard thing to achieve. “My experience with Metal Noir was very positive. I was able to achieve my dream to be creative director for a brand and for the first time, I was able to create garments that reflected another brand. We got to show in New York Fashion week and the response was very positive. The clothes were also worn by Giuliana Rancic on E news.” As I interviewed Payan, he was getting ready for another week of fashion – this one in LA. “The most stressful thing about fashion week would probably be the deadlines. No matter what, everything has to be done by the deadline. But for the most part, fashion week is a lot of fun. You get to organize what your vision is for an audience.” Fortunately for Payan, he is still able to break away for a little bit and visit El Paso. As he grows more and more successful in the world of fashion, making sketches come to life on the runway or the red carpet, there are still things that he misses about his hometown. “What I miss the most is my family. I always get such a sense of belonging when I go back home.” And even with In-N-Out burgers in mass supply in California, Payan added, “And of course the food is so amazing. Whataburger!” In the competitive world of fashion, Masai Payan continues to bring a unique perspective into everything he designs – whether it’s evening wear or

The longer the better! This fall look is called “The Midi,” referring to a hemline below the knee and above the ankle. There are endless ways to wear this style. Pair midi dresses with tall boots or heels, and midi skirts with anything from a basic tee, to a crop top. Midi styles can be pencil shaped, A-line or circular, but the length is consistent and everywhere this Fall.

was in the nursing program at UTEP,” he begins, during a recent phone call from Los Angeles. Knowing that he just earned his BFA in fashion design from one of the most highly regarded programs in the country, OTIS College of Art & Design, and a coveted paid internship with the clothing brand Hurley, this wasn’t the answer I expected. But Correa’s journey goes to show that, like many careers, the path to being a successful fashion designer doesn’t have to be a straight line. A Socorro High School graduate, Correa realized about two years into the nursing program at the University of Texas at El Paso that the career wasn’t for him. Transferring to El Paso Community College, he soon became interested in designer clothing, like Pharrell’s “Billionaire Boys Club” line, which consists of graphic t-shirts and other streetwear. “I loved what Pharrell was doing, but I wasn’t going to spend $80 on a t-shirt,” he explains, “So I bought a screen-printing machine. After a while, I wanted to know how to make the actual shirts I was printing on.”

A recent event they had included a lot of Chicano art, so I felt right at home.” Correa himself draws on his MexicanAmerican heritage and his years dancing folklorico and hip-hop when creating. Those influences are helping him to “start learning what really identifies me as a designer” he explains, recounting a design project he worked on for Hurley where, “They told me they could make a whole collection out of the designs I made. Now they’re giving me more projects here and there.” Correa’s work this summer led Hurley to extend his internship into a temporary position through November. Whether this turns into a full-time position or not, Correa is excited for his future, the ultimate goal to start his own label one day. “All of this is baby steps towards that. I’d like to do a label that’s a fusion of streetwear with what’s called ‘ready to wear,’ and another affordable label underneath those high-end, art pieces,” he explains. Correa’s come a long way since his humble beginnings, learning that the business truly requires a leap of faith, but he also urges aspiring designers to be unafraid. “Research everything about fashion – designers, history, etc. Find the type of designer you want to be and then find how you’re different. Just go for it, whatever you want to do.”

T

o survive cancer means many different things for different people and statistically, almost every single one of us has been touched by the disease. Most of us know at least one person who has been affected by it either directly or indirectly, often tragically, and sometimes

even miraculously. That said, we are almost all subject to dealing with the emotional effects that cancer has on us personally, whether we suffer directly from the disease or know someone close to us that does, and often it includes friends of friends, distant relatives, co-workers and their families, and even those acting as caregivers. The majority of us fall into one of these categories and in some way, shape, or form, it implies a very real and lasting emotional event. Enter the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation (RGCF) and its undying commitment since its inception in 1996, to making a difference in the lives of those affected by this pervasive disease. As we often hear, cancer is in no way discriminating in its selection of individuals to affect, which bodily organs, how young or old, or how successful the individual or not. The same unbiased criteria applies in how the organization chooses to spread its mission to offer enduring support to those who struggle with all types of cancer. The foundation does so by listening closely to the entire community it serves, assessing their needs individually and continually, and all in the aim of developing programs and offerings that make sense for those who stand to benefit.

the program’s incorporation of a “facilitator,” which is a role attainable through an eight-hour training program that focuses on the development of coaching, guidance, and mentoring skills necessary in empowering cancer survivors to engage fully in the experience. This is the key to the program’s success as it requires that facilitators work diligently in moving participants forward in a systematic way that fosters the commitment and dedication required to successfully complete every module. This is the impetus that ultimately serves the program’s purpose in cultivating a healthy and positive outlook on life for each participant. Along with its many other programs, ‘Striving and Thriving’ is designed to make its mark in the community for its progressive views and inherent formula for success. The goal for its upcoming implementation is that it be easily accessible at several facilities in El Paso. The organization listened and now it’s time for us to take action. It means passing on this valuable information, so that those in need will benefit. It’s a simple action that could make a world of a difference in one’s ability to cope with the hurdles and stresses of the disease. As we see, the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation and all of those behind the organization go over and above their mission of providing support on all levels to those afflicted with cancer. We thank them for enriching our lives with hope, gratitude, and unparalleled support!

Thousands of people will lace up their shoes for the 7th annual Making Strides El Paso race this October. The 5K-run/walk put on by the American Cancer Society raises money for breast cancer research, but carries a much bigger meaning. “The race is to remember the ones we lost, support those in the fight and celebrate those out,” said American Cancer Society community event specialist Erica Salas. Making Strides El Paso is one of the two race events the American Cancer Society organizes every year. It outgrew its previous Ascarate Park location; in 2015 2,200 people participated. This year, the race will make its way through parts of West El Paso starting at Las Palmas Life Care Center heading towards the Sun Bowl and through the Kern area before finishing up at the center again. Attendance is expected to spike to 3,000 participants. One of those participants will be cancer survivor,

Isela

Reyes.

participates in Making Strides El Paso, she raises additional money by holding a bike run in advance. “I wanted to pay back for what they did for me,” she says. “It means a lot to me because they helped me.” The mother of three was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010 and underwent surgery and treatment for a year before going into remission. The American Cancer Society made it possible for her to receive a wig and prosthesis. Although cancer runs on both sides of her family, Reyes says she wasn’t expecting her diagnosis and has advice for all women. She says, “It doesn’t matter how old you

are. You don’t need to wait until you’re 40 to get a mammogram. Know your body. Don’t be scared, you run a bigger risk by not doing anything.” Salas echoes the advice. “I think the one thing that stands out the most, is that people have a picture of breast cancer and it’s an older woman, but that isn’t the

“I’ve known women 32 and 24. There is no cookie cutter, there’s not an age.” Death rates have been decreasing since 1989, credited in part to awareness and prevention. Two key components that enhance treatment and research. Participants in Making Strides El Paso can learn more about detecting and stopping breast cancer the day of the race. In addition to information booths, they can tour Desert Imaging’s mobile mammogram vehicle. Statistics are scary when you look at how many women are afflicted. They show about 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Men aren’t left untouched by breast cancer, though risk is about 1 in 1,000, about 2,350 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2015. Reyes gets emotional when asked about what she hopes for the future when it comes to breast cancer research. “I hope they really find a cure. I would hate for my daughter to have it.” To learn more about Making Strides El Paso visit them on their Facebook page or www. makingstrideswalk.org. The race is set for October 17; registration starts at 7a.m. If you go, you’ll also be treated to a car show. There is no fee to participate, attendees are asked to make a donation. Event tees are available for purchase, but teams usually turn out in a sea of pink sporting attire that portrays personal messages of support. *Statistics from www.breastcancer.org www.thecitymagazineelp.com

“Quality over quantity.” Pageantry runs in the blood of Marco Carmona. It is a passion that started at a young age that he has continued to nurture and excel in. A GuyRex production kicked off his career into the world of pageantry. Throughout the years, Carmona has merged his own talents and expertise with the standard of “quality over quantity” that he so admired from GuyRex, also known as the Kings of Pageantry. Carmona attributes his contestants’ countless wins to the collaborative efforts of his team that he has strategically put together. Those mentored by Carmona throughout the past 25 years would agree that he has an uncanny ability to speak words of wisdom into a contestant’s life that goes beyond their career in

FASHION: BLO | By: PABLO DELGADILLO |

T

he digital era has become a huge platform for “regular” people to launch themselves as a brand. In the past few years, sites like YouTube, Tumblr and Wordpress have allowed people to reach an incredible amount of followers with their blogs (which stands

for a website or webpage that is currently being updated by one individual or group). People keep up, day to day with the blogger’s original content, tutorials, videos or/and anecdotes. The fashion industry specifically, has seen a major increase of fashion bloggers and they’ve taken notice. Chiara Ferragni and Bryan Grey, better known as Bryanboy, are a few of the most famous bloggers around the world, and have built an empire around their blog. Prestigious brands endorse them, invite them to events or make collaborations happen. El Paso is slowly building a strong fashion scene, and we even have bloggers in our community that’ve done pretty well, and have a steady fan base.

October, 2015 Jazmine Aranas is the author behind Sheerstomping. This El Paso girl has been blogging since 2012, and it all started with her love for shoes. “Money doesn’t buy you style,” Aranas says, and that’s exactly what her blog is about. She focuses on affordable brands because her reader is just an average girl that’s interested in fashion. H&M, Zara, Adidas and New Balance are some of her favorite brands. For Aranas, it is important to stay true to her style, which she describes as “laidback, girly, and sporty with a touch of glam,” as well to resonate with girls that can buy her looks with any budget. Blogging often

OGGERS brings endorsements and “freebies.” Brands have sent Aranas products for her to try and advertise on

her social media. “I try to always say the truth about the products that I like. If I don’t like it, I’m not going to post about it.” Blogs are becoming very popular, so Sheerstomping had to go under maintenance at the beginning of 2015, and it evolved from being a fashion blog to a lifestyle blog. Arenas now incorporates fitness and her own cooking recipes into the mix, but the true essence of Sheerstomping is still style and timeless pieces of clothing. Gesuina Legaspy, who started her fashion journey as a buyer for local store Tres Mariposas, runs another blog that has gotten a lot of attention. “They taught me everything I know, and without their knowledge I wouldn’t be where I am now. I wouldn’t have a blog or have the ability to express my vision.” Legaspy runs the blog Tres Gal, which she describes as edgy, clean and stylish. She decided to start her blog in February of this year, but it quickly became one of the most polished blogs in the borderland. She had access to designer clothes, fashion expertise and to free hair and makeup, so starting a blog came naturally. Legaspy wants people not only to see in detail her personal style, but also to get to know her as a person. “I want my blog to be approachable, I want people to get to

October, 2015 know me, not just what I wear,” Legaspy continues, “Fashion is everything I want to do for the rest of my life, I feel very humble when people recognize me or tell me that they read my blog, it’s a nice feeling.” Elyse Walker is also a big inspiration for her – Legaspy wants to follow her footsteps and open her own boutique early next year. Both girls feel the pressure of having their readers interested in what they post, and having constant fresh ideas is one of the main components of having a successful blog. Legaspy and Aranas follow a calendar and plan their photoshoots with local photographers as well. “It’s cool that your friend’s work also gets recognized on social media, it’s definitely a collaboration and I wouldn’t be able to do it all by myself,” Aranas says. Legaspy often works with our own The City magazine photographer Dav Anmed. Legaspy is ready for El Paso to take more fashion chances and she and Arenas hope that they’re helping girls through their blogs to express themselves. “As a community we are growing and it’s time for El Paso’s fashion community to grow and take more risks,” Legaspy adds. Jennifer han

On September 19th a proud daughter of the Sun City was announced as El Paso’s first World Boxing Champion, one of the greatest fighters in the entire world. The Don Haskins Center housed the world title boxing match headlined by Jennifer Han. It was an opportunity that Han was glad to seize. Prior to the fight Han said, “I am fighting against Helen Joseph from Nigeria for the IBF world featherweight title … she’s a powerful fighter since she has quite a few knock outs for our weight class. She has a similar background to me in that she started out doing martial arts, kickboxing, amateur boxing and now professional boxing. However, even though she has a similar background, she does not have a similar style of boxing that I do.” Of course the journey to this point began long ago when she began training under her father, Master Han. The idea of a lifelong dream becoming a reality was something that only recently struck Han, “I started seeing myself at championship caliber last year when I fought for the IFBA world title in Korea against Woo Ji Hye and at the time it was one of my best performances yet. I did not get the decision, but I felt that I had dominated and I belonged up there with the best in the world.” The missed opportunity in Korea only fueled this great competitor’s fire as she prepared for the opportunity. “Training camp had been great, I got in some great sparring with the guys, (including her brother Abie and local fighter Austin Trout). [My Trainer] really drilled our game plan against Joseph, and we worked a lot on my footwork.” Like all great champions, Han has been forged by adversity. “The most difficult point in my career was in the beginning when I didn’t get many opportunities to fight. I thought I was done because it wasn’t like people were knocking down my door to be on their fight cards and I wasn’t able to compete unless they were calling me at the last minute to fight in other people’s hometowns,” Han confesses. But the circumstances for this fight have certainly changed, “Nothing beats fighting in your hometown. All my family, friends, students, and fans were there cheering for me and giving me their positive energy to win. I have fought all over the world and have enjoyed it, but it’s not the same when you have the people cheering for you rather than against you.” Of course, standing out as Han does can always be a bit difficult especially as a woman studying the sweet science of pugilism, “I am honored to be considered a role model. It was so amazing to receive coaching from people that are the actual gurus in the American fashion industry. I learned so much while on the show and that experience is really the foundation for my decision to create a modeling agency in El Paso. What I realized is that I really want to help develop models and help them discover their talent. And really, that’s the magic of forums like ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and even my modeling agency – what better way to study the art of modeling than with someone who has worked as a model and who has the experience and connections to help new faces achieve their dream of becoming a model.” Now back in El Paso again, Arman has officially opened Arman Model Management. “We encourage all new models and new faces who are looking into the business to come to our weekly open call,” Arman said. “Altogether, Arman Model Management is the creation and the resemblance of what a real modeling agency should look like and work like. It is my hope that Arman Model Management will help those who have always dreamed of modeling achieve their goals. Beauty Trends You Need NOW | By: MATTHEW ABRAHAM |

There are several beauty trends emerging for fall and winter that will work for everyone, from the glamour girl to those that prefer a more natural look. I have assembled the top five looks popping up all over the beauty blogosphere, fashion runways and red carpet premiers.

Full Natural Brows NOT making a return from the 90s are overly-plucked, pencilthin eyebrows. The full brow trend we’ve seen in recent years continues this season with an even fuller, darker brow than ever being all the rage. If your brows are on the puny side, try using a product such as the It Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil ($24), which is designed to adhere to your skin and look like real hair, even in areas where your brows might be sparse or non-existent.

His Prer | By: MATTHEW WILKSON |

One of a man’s multiple life duties is to be a reasonable skeptic. It’s ingrained in our blood as a defense mechanism against the daily bull shoveled at our feet, and possibly also a way of dealing with that overwhelming feeling that comes with endless amounts of options. This certainly holds true for the way many guys feel about the amount of options in the world of men’s grooming. Most guys react to the confusing realm of prepping products with pure skepticism, which I absolutely understand because there is a lot of junk out there that will lower your expectations and leave your pocketbook lonely. So, I have done the research for you this month and I’ll share some products that are actually worth the skrilla. 88

ogative Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo Lately I have been experimenting with dry shampoo. I remember many years ago, being in Los Angeles and seeing a billboard that was almost ridiculing those who were still shampooing their hair. At that time, I was absolutely skeptical of dry shampoos and I couldn’t see myself ever switching my daily routine from suds to spray. I have to admit though – I am a believer and I can see why people love them, but just like anything else in the world, there are many different options. My favorite so far is the Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk. It really does seem to put life back into your hair. So, you slept in some kind of toddler-like sleeping position that left your hair looking as if you were early for Halloween? This little can of spray-on dry shampoo will transform that abandoned eagles nest on your skull into a clean, healthy feeling scalp with hair that feels revitalized and fresh. How does it work though? The fine powder that is sprayed onto the hair and roots lifts oil and sweat like a sponge, leaving your hair seeming freshly “wet” shampooed. It will also stunt double as a texturizer and is known to take the volume of your hair up to 11. Available at Birchbox.com- $20 (w/ free shipping!)

S.L.A.B. Handcrafted Soap I recently made a trip with my wife to the Pacific Northwest and stumbled across an awesome natural soap shop in the Willamette Valley of Oregon called S.L.A.B. This all natural soap company slices up small batches of all oil-based soaps that are gentle on your skin. Did you know that many other soaps are made with harsh synthetic chemicals, animal fat and something called beef tallow? While typical soaps use ingredients that strip your skin of its nutrients, S.L.A.B. makes cleansing bars that nourish and moisturize your skin, treating it gently with palm, coconut, and olive oil. Each bar that they make has a unique color, light scent, and is jam packed with exfoliants. Every bar that I have tried has been outstanding, but a few that stuck out in my mind are coconut, peppermint oatmeal and honeysuckle. Best of all, S.L.A.B. Soaps is exclusively offering 10% off all orders when you use the Coupon Code: thecity at their online store! And for real, doesn’t the word beef tallow sound super gross? MANGROOMER Biz Wipes Flushable Moist Personal Wipes Engineered for Men I didn’t even think this was real when I first saw it, but it is official: Men now have their own booty wipes. To be frank, some of you dudes need it more than others, but no matter how it sounds, this is a good idea for

all guys. A lot of you fools who have the stink taint funk don’t even know it, and everyone that gets close to you has to endure the stench of disparage in your undercarriage. If you have ever heard someone use the expression, “it smells like balls in here,” they might have been referring to you. Not to worry, MANGROOMER has made a flushable wipe that is made specifically for men! They are described on Amazon.com as “Engineered specifically for men, use Mangroomer Biz Wipes in addition to toilet paper to effectively clean and eliminate any unwanted residue.” I thought that was the nicest way that they could have possibly described how the Biz Wipes get rid of dingle berries; and if you only use TP, believe me, you’ve got them. Biz Wipes are scented with masculine fragrances to keep your nether regions smelling less like crotch rot and more like an executive. Throw one of these packs in your briefcase or backpack and you’ll never get caught with swamp ass again. Available at Amazon.com- $19.71 (pack of 6) 90

Size doesn’t matter, right? So girls, you should

be comfortable with small earrings, that pair

up with every outfit in your closet, from a

cozy sweater to a sexy bathing suit. Chandelier

earrings are only ok if you’re going to compete in

a pageant (if you are, then good luck!) but if you’re

not, try to rock some smaller rocks! Tory Burch

and Kate Spade always have cute stud earrings at

affordable prices.

Lux in a tux

Who said tuxes are only for men? This

season, womenswear is taking a heavy

influence from menswear and the tux dress is no exception.

Looking like an

oversized men’s blazer with a more form fitting

silhouette, this dress is the perfect garment for a night

of cocktails or a romantic dinner. Just make sure your man

is not wearing a tuxedo when you’re wearing your dress, because we will have to ask, who wore it best?

Patch me up

With the colder weather around the corner it is important to start looking for nice

items that will keep us warm. One of the

coolest trends is patchwork. Patchwork

is a mix of different materials incorporated into one

piece. A cashmere sweater with suede patches, or a wool

jacket with pleather sleeves. The possibilities are many, as you can find an infinite variation of styles, sweaters, jackets, pants; just be sure to stay warm this fall!

Don’t swing from those chandeliers

Let’s let singer Sia be the only one talking

about chandeliers, because this style of

earrings are out. Although they might be the

“fancy” option for a formal party, women should

opt for something shorter that makes the same

statement. Chandelier earrings are flashy, and they

are heavy on your earlobes, so give them a rest and

use something smaller.

Bodycon Dresses Bodycon dresses are nice club attire, but not necessarily the best option when it

comes to other social events (like weddings, or a christening). Let’s leave those party

dresses for when you want to get down with your

gal pals, or if you’re going to Vegas for a sexy getaway.

Recycling plastic Remember when you donated money to that nice charity and they gave you that plastic bracelet so everyone would know you donated money? Well, you’ve done

the good deed so there’s no reason for you to be

wearing those neon bracelets anymore. Only raver kids and children under the age of 10 should be wearing one – if you don’t fit into any of these categories, it’s time to recycle them!

Experiencing Fashion Week

109

October, 2015

For the fashion lover, there is no greater occasion than the wonderful rush of autumn and the flood of lovely style it brings. Yes, fall 2015 means “fashion week,” as the intoxicating occasion has come to be called. And in cities across the globe, this marvelous phenomenon will be celebrated with trunks and trunks of this season’s hottest trends being flaunted on illustrious runways for the hungry eyes of the world to see. But what does that mean for you?

The first show was for luxury handbag and purse designer, Bryant Phelan, of O’Faolain, and he completely blew me away with his designs. What makes Bryant so unique is that he hand makes everything he does and the materials he puts together for every purse are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Each time I photograph his shows I’m always impressed and this year was no different because the details he put together were out of this world. His collection included Italian leather, python, lavender suede, white pebble leather, sheepskin, etc. This year his final look was a gold-leafed python cut into feathers and sewn onto leather wings on the flap of a white-pebbled leather handmade backpack.”

Meyer Marcus, chairman of MIMCO, Inc. and Regional Council member describes A Three Wish Circus as an “opportunity for the community to get involved.” “Not only can people bid on items, donate to the cause and enjoy the evening, but they get to see wishes granted and get to personally meet the children and families that are the recipients,” said Marcus. “People get to see first hand just how amazing the whole process and foundation are.” Some of the other sponsors for the event included Stewart Title, Children’s Hospital at Providence, River Oaks Properties, Helen of Troy, Western Refining, Casa Ford Lincoln Nissan, Sunland Park Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Hanson Asset Management, Mithoff Burton Partners, ARM Farms, MTI Ready Mix and Tropicana Homes. KVIA served as the Media Sponsor and The City Magazine as the Advertising Sponsor. In-kind support included Axess Media Group, Ben Bridge Jeweler, Casa Buenavista and Southwest Airlines, as well as other partners. “It’s a chance to not only give back to my community, but also to support what I consider one of the best non-profit organizations in the country,” said Cabrera. “They are El Paso kids and El Pasoans take care of their own. n the East side of El Paso, a monster of a sandwich

has quickly become a famed neighborhood favorite. It’s not just any sandwich, but the sandwich of your dreams – two

donuts, with a scoop of ice cream in the middle and a topping of

your choice, nicknamed “The Leche Monster.”

You can find it at the Tasty Donut Café, a small shop with some big local fans, located at the corner of Montwood and Saul Kleinfeld. Owners Adrian Kheing and Lu Lin saw the business opportunity while visiting Lin’s family in El Paso last summer, noticing that the East side’s donut shop offerings were minimal. “Economically, it was very valuable for me to open up on this side of town,” Kheing says, explaining that he saw a demand for something different amidst the national donut chains in the area. “Franchises and big companies may have tons of money, but product wise, I think you just can’t beat handmade donuts,” he says. Not only are their donuts handmade every day, but so are their sauces, icings, and glaze. Because of this, “None of my donuts are oily, even on the inside. The glaze is going to be a lot lighter than places like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts,” Kheing explains.

Originally from Southern California, itself a mecca of “mom and pop” donut offerings, Kheing learned how to make donuts from a friend at Super Donuts, a shop that has expanded to multiple stores throughout the south of the United States. You can see the influence this has had in the variety of items he sells - from cake donuts with cereal for toppings, to Louisiana-style “tacos” (El Paso translation: breakfast burritos), maple-bacon glazed donuts, smoothies and slushies, and even an East Texas favorite called kolaches. “The dough used for a kolache is different than the donuts, and inside is sausage and cheese,” Kheing says, “They’re really popular in Houston and Austin, so people who know what they are come here to buy dozens. From what I’ve heard, this is the only place you can find them in the city.” With a commitment to “creating items that aren’t in El Paso yet that are hip, creative, and get people excited,” the shop also offers customized orders for special occasions, spelling out anything you’d like with your choice of donuts. Kheing has done everything from birthday and congratulatory messages to dating proposals. But these unique offerings aren’t the only things drawing customers to his shop. At the café, you can find comfortable seating, an always-friendly staff, and even free wifi, so people “can simply hangout, eat, have a coffee, and relax,” Kheing says. The shop has grown much of its business through being active on social media. Run www.thecitymagazineelp.com

by Kheing’s business partner Lin, the Tasty Donut Café’s Instagram boasts close to 5,000 followers, and often re-posts delectable pictures their customers share on the app.

123

October, 2015

“Having a successful business is all about how you advertise and market yourself, and it’s 2015, so social media is very important. Social media posting actually helped us out more than paying a lot of money to place advertisements in different places,” Kheing says. It helps that the shop finds it important to form partnerships in the community, delivering regularly to Sierra Providence’s cafeteria and churches like Abundant Living Faith Center and Cielo Vista Church. Always looking for event opportunities, Kheing says, “We recently hosted a car show, and we’re trying to get involved with animal shelters and to host school fundraisers.” Since its opening last October, the shop now sees a steady stream of regular customers, from the students at neighboring schools to donut-seekers from as far as New Mexico and Juarez. Kheing says this growing customer base has led him to look into expanding into the West side and Northeast eventually, so El Pasoans won’t have to travel far to encounter “The Leche Monster” themselves.

Warm and Delightful! F October, 2015

| By: ELAINE GORDON |

all is on its way and October is the time of year that we start to anticipate a break in the weather; fall festivals, Halloween, Starbucks gearing up for warm and delicious Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and a decision to start shopping for

foods that are warming to prepare our bodies for the change of seasons.

With the cooler weather upon us, I thought I would share a few of my nutritious recipes that are filling and cause our bodies to adapt in the

coming winter months ahead. We do this by increasing our protein consumption. I have introduced a hearty locally raised grass fed organic beef stew. Grass fed beef is lower in saturated fat and higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), and Vitamin E. In addition, eating beef with green leafy vegetables, especially cultured vegetables (fermented), helps digest the meat, making the meal more beneficial. Some other warming vegetables are yams, carrots, winter squash, bok choy, broccoli, leeks, beets, pumpkin, barley, wild rice and whole grains. Spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and cayenne are effective at inducing thermogenesis and help raise our core temperature, often by boosting blood circulation or removing excess water from our tissues. These are the five warming spices that you want to add to your recipes during this particular season. I have also included one of my favorite recipes and that is my warm and creamy pumpkin soup topped with vanilla Greek yogurt, drizzled with organic pureed coconut milk. This adds a nice touch to this harvest meal. Culminating this lovely meal, I decided to prepare my baked cinnamon, walnut apple a la mode. This brings our autumn feast to a level of pure delight and definitely a memorable epicurean experience! 138

Grass Fed Organic Beef Stew with Home Grown Root Vegetables Serves 6-8 Ingredients: 2½ lbs. grass fed beef, cut into cubes 1 c dry red table wine Himalayan sea salt, cracked pepper Light olive oil 5 cloves garlic, chopped 1 c pearl onions, trimmed and peeled 2 celery stalks, sliced 3 large size Russet potatoes, pealed, cut up 3 organic carrots, orange, yellow, purple in color, peeled, sliced, save greens from tops of carrots 4 c organic beef broth 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar ½ tsp. dried herbs to taste (thyme, sage, rosemary) 1 bay leaf ½ lb. organic mushrooms quartered Directions: In a deep stainless steel or cast iron pot, heat the olive oil and brown the salted beef cubes on all sides to sear in the flavor. Be mindful to turn the beef so that they are browned evenly on all sides. Cook time should be about five minutes. Remove the meat and set aside on a plate. Add the carrots, celery, potatoes, mushrooms, onions, garlic and spices and sauté until the onions are translucent. Then add the red wine, beef broth, balsamic vinegar and meat to the pot. Stir, cover and allow to simmer at least 3-4 hours making sure that you stir every 15 minutes at first, then adjust the stirring accordingly. This will prevent the stew from burning on the bottom. The stew is ready when the beef and vegetables are tender. Taste the broth and add some more Himalayan salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Flavors should be balanced. When serving the stew, garnish each bowl with carrot top greens. Serve with Irish Soda Bread warmed in the oven.

CHARITABLE GIVING THROUGH LIFE INSURANCE

| By: MICHAEL C. GRAHAM, J.D., CLTC, AIF, PRESIDENT, GRAHAM CAPITAL STRATEGIES, LLC |

Most people could not write a check today for $100,000 to their chosen charity. But through life insurance, it can cost you very little to be very generous. Life insurance enables you to make a substantial future gift by making small premium payments over time. The advantages of using life insurance as the instrument to fund a charitable giving plan include: • You may qualify for income, gift and estate tax deductions. • The gift is given without disrupting other assets reserved for your family. • Death benefits are paid promptly to the charity. • Gifts of life insurance do not increase estate liquidity needs. • The policy’s growing cash value also may be borrowed by the charitable institution for special needs. Additionally, the federal government has structured income, gift and estate tax laws to encourage you to share your assets with charitable organizations. The tax benefits you may receive include lower: • Income tax liability

• Gift tax liability

• Estate tax liability

Options for funding charitable donations through life insurance There are two common options to consider when making charitable donations through life insurance. Choose the one that best meets your needs. • Option 1 – Name a charitable beneficiary to receive all or a portion of the proceeds of a policy you already own or purchase a new policy, naming a favorite charity as beneficiary.

Pat Graham, CLU, CFP ® Chief Executive Officer Cynthia Rivas, CLTC Inaam Abdel-Jaber Naomi Montez Claudia De La Rosa Neissha King Oscar Lopez

In either case, you own the policy and you pay premiums. You cannot deduct the premium payments, but you maintain control of the policy (should you decide to change the beneficiary at some point). • Option 2 – Donate policy dividends, or interest earnings, if any, from cash values to a favorite charity, or make cash donations to the charity for the purpose of purchasing life insurance. This provides you with a current income tax deduction, while the charity pays the premiums and maintains ownership of the policy.

Estate planning needs If you have more sophisticated estate planning needs, charitable giving may be a necessary

In this case, life insurance in combination with various estate planning instruments can provide you with current income tax deductions and may generate income for you and your family. If you are interested in making a charitable gift through life insurance, or if you have complicated estate planning needs, consult your insurance representative and tax advisor or attorney for further information. No matter how you look at it, charitable giving through life insurance is a win-win situation. MONTH

WE HAVE BECOME INSEPARABLE.

TCM Pet of the Month highlights our readers’ best friends!

“Angus” - German Shepard Owner Jason Windell says, “This is my German Shepherd, Angus. He didn’t have a very good life in the beginning, from what I’m told. You see, he was found tied to a tree in his first owners backyard and was not treated very well. I had been looking for a GSD and checked out a few pounds, but had no luck. I wanted a male about six months old, but I kept finding older dogs. So, one day I was looking on Facebook and saw that a lady had German Shepherd puppies for sale. They were half husky and GSD, so I told her I was looking for a pure bred, that’s when she told me about Angus! She sent me a couple of photos, and knew he was the one! I drove to Las Cruces the next day, (August 4th of this year) and adopted him. We have become inseparable ever since.” Is your pet TCM’s next Pet of the Month?
