s young girls, we change the color of our

dream wedding every few years. We look

through magazine after magazine, choosing

young women setting out on our adult journey, there is a traditional order with principals that we dream of following. They seem to always start the same: college, a career, love and commitment, all leading to that big day when we walk down the aisle—the day that all eyes are on us, our wedding day. We envision the perfect flowers, the photographer catching that moment when our eyes say “I love you,” and family and friends celebrating. Love is always in the air, weddings are always magical, and for the most part, they come with unforgettable stories. There is something so special about new beginnings, new apartments and new homes, but the dream always begins with the wedding. Though traditions are still strong, the “new” bride searches for something original for her wedding day. Take a look at Danielle and Cody on page 84, who had friends read “The Art of Marriage” by Wilfred A. Peterson, and then had a Native American blessing in honor of the groom’s heritage. Whether it be through a small, intimate nuptial, or a spectacular destination wedding, this year’s brides search to leave their unique mark on the day that is only theirs. Both the trendy and the traditional brides differ in style and themes, but they all have at least one thing in common: they all deserve the wedding they’ve always longed for and the man of their dreams. If you find yourself currently planning your dream wedding, look to these weddings for inspiration. Read the article on bridesmaid’s

The Proposal

“Ben proposed on his birthday last year. I came home after a busy day at work ready to go out celebrating with our close friends. Ben was home waiting for me ready to propose. Ben kept the proposal short, simple, and intimate which was perfect for me. Little did I know we would be celebrating much more than his birthday that night.”

Wedding Inspiration

“After Ben proposed I did what most women do ... I began my Pinterest search for inspiration. The wedding slowly took shape with inspiration from colors. I liked natural colors such as dusty rose, soft blush, and grey/beige. With the help from family, including my mother-in-law, sisterin-law, and my vendors, the wedding slowly took shape. I loved the rustic venue with the natural wood at EPIC Railyard and wanted that to be the showcase.

Memorable Momente

“Highlights from my wedding include the first look on the rooftop. I was hesitant initially to do a first look, but am so happy we had that moment because it was about the two of us and really set my nerves at ease. I will always remember seeing Ben for the first time in his tuxedo knowing we were moments away from being man and wife.” 22

Customize Instead of Compromise | By: STEPHANIE AVILES |

Whether on the printed itinerary or a complete surprise, a food truck is the perfect thing to refuel a wedding in a quick and satisfying manner. As a growing trend among weddings, having a late-night food truck is the rising star for creating a casual atmosphere after neck ties have been loosen (or placed as a headband depending on how your guests party) and heels have been kicked off. They provide an opportunity to get some fresh air from the packed dance hall while indulging your taste buds in delicious food. There is no shortage of options to choose from. You can go for a local business with their own unique food that you know you crave, or you can pick a franchise favorite like In-N-Out Burger, depending on where your wedding is being held. Instead of compromising, customize your food. You can even save some money by using a food truck rather than using your venues menu that doesn’t have all that you want. However, if you decide to have a food truck at your wedding, make sure to clear it with your venue. Just because you are not having their food, it’s important to stay respectful. When choosing a food truck, you can go for quirky food like ice cream to cool off your guests from the dancing and memory making, or you can have coffee to give them a nice pick-me-up. If you are worried about your venue’s bar running dry, have a food truck that also serves alcohol to keep the party going. While it is unlikely to get the hard liquor, a lot of food trucks have craft beer spouts on the side of the vehical for your guest to pick from. You can also get something small like fries or popcorn to compensate for a larger party. Though, it is important to meet with the owner beforehand to go over the specifics to prevent shortages like the played-out candy table. You can even make your selection an inside joke between you and your beloved. For instance, if you met fighting over the last donut in a coffee shop, have a donut food truck so you can enjoy what brought you together. In the end, that is what it is all about—making your day the most memorable for you and your bride/groom. Having your wedding being the talk of the town is just a bonus.

The Wedding of

Michelle Valdez AND Adam Lasky u

August 5, 2017

u

They Met

They met while Michelle was attending Georgetown University. Her professor set her up with Adam to discuss helpful career advice. “I set up the informational interview. It was raining that day … I met Adam, we had a great conversation about his career and mine for [an hour and a half],” says Michelle. She started an internship with him for the Washington Nationals, MLB team, and soon after got hired. “Fast forward about two years, Adam and I have our first date! Or, as Adam describes it, man marries former intern. It’s really the classic Washington love story,” Michelle says.

The Proposal

“Back in May of 2016, Adam and I took a trip to Italy. One of our stops was Venice. Adam plans every second of every trip, so naturally the first question I had in the morning was, ‘Ok, what do I wear today? How nice do I need to look?’ He explained that we’d visit a few museums, churches and walk the city. Before sunset, we went back to our hotel to change for dinner because, as Adam explained, it was going to be a nice dinner in Venice. We walk out of our hotel and a water taxi is waiting right outside our hotel door. I’m taking photos and video, as I always do. The sun is beginning to set. As we get off the water taxi, Adam takes my hand, and as we start walking, I notice two things: rose petals on the floor and a photographer waving at someone. As I look back at Adam, he’s on one knee proclaiming his love for me, ring in open box, in his outstretched hands. I interrupt him and say, “YES! Can I hug you now?!” As we hug and kiss, the photographer captures it all.”

The Wedding Inspiration “My husband had one request: everything must be inside, nothing outside.” With the wedding taking place in August, El Paso weather would’ve been too hot for the guests. Once the venue was chosen, Michelle and Adam decided on rustic, dark finishes with bright colors incorporated as much as possible. “Bright colors give me energy and scream positivity,” Michelle said. “Lastly, because we had several out of town guests, I wanted to include a taste of what living in a border town is,” she added. Their wedding details included Loteria cards as the guest book, piñatas on cocktail tables, Patron tequila as the escort cards for guests and mariachis to surprise the guests. 26

The Wedding of Kaitlin Cook AND

Colten Hernandez u

September 23, 2017

u

They Met

“Many would say that we are a cliché,” says Kaitlin. Her and Colten are high school sweethearts who met in math class. “One plus one did not equal two at first. In all honesty Colten thought I was very annoying and loud, and I thought he was the weird but cute upperclassman that never talked. It wasn’t until a mutual friend of ours helped us exchange numbers and we texted awkwardly on and off for a few months [that] I surprisingly found out we were dating when he told me ‘Happy one-month anniversary.’”

Advice

“Hire a wedding planner that understands your vision and makes you feel comfortable! I can honestly say I was able to enjoy being a bride and I didn’t sweat the details because they took care of everything. [Another] thing that was very important to Colten and I to cure our jitters was to see each other before the wedding. We wanted just a few moments to ourselves before the ceremony. We had our first look by the pool and were able to just have a few moments to ourselves before departing for the ceremony.”

Wedding Traditions

“My something old, borrowed and blue was all wrapped into one treasured family heirloom of my great grandmother’s, her sapphire ring. This ring was given to her from her father and it was her mother’s engagement ring. During the great depression, the diamond was sold and much later replaced with her birthstone, a sapphire. My mother wore it in her wedding, as well as my older sister and now it was my turn to wear a ring that has been in my family for five generations and is a symbol of the strength and resiliency of the women in our family.” 30

The Wedding of Thania Cervantes and

Aaron Johnson u

September 2, 2017

u

The Proposal

“For my 26th birthday, Aaron decided it would be nice to have a birthday party at his parents’ house and invite all of our family and friends. Considering it was just my birthday, I didn’t want to make it such a big thing, nor was I expecting anyone to show up; it hailed that day. But everyone showed up and he proposed, I really was not expecting it, but it was amazing!”

Wedding Inspiration

“Navy is Aaron’s favorite color and I loved the way the gold color complimented it. We also wanted our wedding to be extravagant. We knew that a lot of our friends and family— some who we had not seen in years—would be there, so we wanted everyone to have a great time.”

Breaking Traditions

“We followed a couple of wedding traditions, but [according to our grandmothers] we also broke some. We kept it traditional by having a pastor ordain our wedding. One modern thing we did was take our photos before the ceremony. So, we did see each other before, but it was worth it because the day went so smoothly,” says Thania.

The Wedding of The Proposal

“Mitch and I decided to go on a cruise to Alaska in 2015. Prior to departing for the cruise, Mitch designed a custom wedding ring for me consisting of diamonds from his mother’s and late father’s wedding rings. Just before a formal dinner one evening, Mitch took me aside and said, “I need to talk to you about something.” The initial look on my face was, ‘Oh my God, what is he about to tell me?’ We sat down in a quiet little corner, he got down on one knee and began with, ‘I never thought I could be this happy again.’ Mitch then put the ring on my finger without actually asking for my hand in marriage. I said yes to a question Mitch never really asked.”

Patricia Alva-Green AND Mitchel Kraker u

October 14, 2017

u

Wedding Inspiration

“We decided to have an outdoor wedding and told our wedding planner Veronica Valles we wanted to be ‘wowed.’ [The location] was an oasis in the desert, a very unique, lush [private] garden. We fell in love with the location immediately. We are both avid travelers, so we decided on a theme of ‘Our Journey Begins.’ Our ‘Save the Dates’ were a replica of a U.S. passport. All decorations, table adornments, favors, etc. were all travel related. At every table, we highlighted a city or country we had both traveled to by putting a picture from the location along with souvenirs or icons of that city or country. The wedding favor was a luggage tag that looked like a suitcase and they were a big hit!”

“The most memorable moment was including Pat’s father as part of the wedding day. Pat’s father was in the hospital and could not be released to attend the ceremony. So, we took the wedding to him! Before the ceremony, we stopped at the hospital to see her father and get his blessing. Pat’s father was dressed in a tux and was waiting for her in the lobby. Pat arranged the father and daughter dance to take place at the hospital [and] selected ‘The Way You Look Tonight.’ Somehow, the music just started playing by itself and Pat invited her father to dance with her. Everyone watched with teary eyes. Pat had written a daughter to dad letter and read it out loud to him. We gave gifts to Pat’s father, then he gave us his blessing. It’s a moment we’ll never forget.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The Wedding of Shannan Kot AND

Ramiro Gutierrez u

May 6, 2017

u

The Proposal

“We were moving into an apartment together and when we finally finished settling into our new home, Ramiro took me out to a nice dinner in celebration of living together for the first time. When we returned home, he opened the door to our new place and to my surprise there were rose peddles all over the floor and counters, tons of photos dating back to when we first started dating strung all over wall and on our dining table—several little tea candles surrounded a box with the most gorgeous ring I had ever seen. There in our first place together, Ramiro got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.”

Inspiration

“I used succulent plants as an inspiration/ theme. [Since] this is a desert plant, it was perfect for a desert wedding in our hometown of El Paso. The invitations had succulent designs throughout and there were succulents in my bouquet and his boutonnière. We even gave away little terra cotta pots of various succulents as wedding favors to our guests. It came out perfectly!”

Memories

“I made a long playlist of favorite songs appropriate for the wedding and requested our DJ to play them throughout the reception. Now, anytime I play this playlist it brings me back to our wedding. It’s a nice way to revisit the feelings experienced through our wedding day.” 42

The Wedding of Sofia Rovirosa AND

Jesse Creitz u

APRIL 29, 2017

u

The Proposal

“Jesse spent six weeks commercial salmon fishing in Bristol Bay, Alaska to earn the money for my ring. He then drove from Juneau, Alaska, where we were living, to our new house in Napa, California in three days and proposed the day we moved into the house. It was a very straightforward yet meaningful proposal.”

Inspiration from the Past

“Our inspiration was the rustic adobe house [my] great-grandparents built in the 1930s, as well as the natural beauty of the surrounding pecan orchards and desert landscape. Our wedding was the first to be held at the house. Jesse and I are so proud of the beautiful farm my family has cultivated over the past eight decades and it was special to get to share it with the people who are most important to us.”

Advice

“Have good champagne on hand and an excellent team backing you up. I’m so grateful that I had the best wedding coordinator, wedding stylist, hair and makeup artist and photographer that I could ask for. Everyone was so helpful and kind, and it made the day come together seamlessly. Also, a little Al Green goes a long way.”

The Wedding of Mayela Urias AND

Paul Abbott u

July 22, 2017

u

The Proposal

“After a day full of romantic dates, I came home to ditch the heels for slippers. As I was grading papers in my sweatpants and messy hair bun, Paul started helping me with the workload. As he was cutting shapes for me (kindergarten teacher problems), he started talking about his love for me and our future. He got up from the table and started pacing. He seemed nervous so I asked him if something was wrong. Right then, he got down on one knee, presented the ring, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.”

Advice

“Don’t sweat the small stuff. As we were taking photos with the bridal party in a field, it started pouring! In June, in El Paso, pouring! We did not have a ‘first-look’ shoot because we waited to see each other down the aisle. We had no couple photos at this point and the rain caused a shift in plans. Due to the rain, we did not get the photographs we planned on getting, but we did get unforgettable pictures in the rain and unforgettable memories.”

Family Traditionst

“Pedida – This was before the wedding but one of my favorite traditions. Paul asked my father for my hand in marriage and then asked me. He thought he was done but then I explained the Hispanic tradition of a pedida. Paul’s parents, from Kentucky, came to El Paso for the first time to join Paul in asking for my hand in marriage to my entire family. It was a unity between his family and mine. An important decision made by not only us, but our families, to come together.” 50

Tents and Events Derek Dominguez is spearheading the way that events and celebrations are being conducted in El Paso. Just three months ago, Derek acquired the prominent 30-year-old business, Party World, to add to his already successful Tents and Events business. “It’s a fun, exciting business … and we’re expanding outward,” says Derek. The retail section of Party World will be stripped away to create a greater focus on the rental half of the business and cater to a larger demographic of customers. Tents and Events merging with Party World will escalate the already premiere tent company. The company already services the entire El Paso area and even surrounding cities such as Marfa, Las Cruces, Fort Bliss and more. The services that they provide don’t stop short of tents and fencing; they provide generators, lighting, valet parking and are working to become a complete onestop shop for any event. The company has worked on large-scale events such as Neon Desert and other music festivals, to smaller backyard wedding receptions. The excitement of this new venture is paired with the already-existing passion for providing an excellent service to El Paso. “We want to provide phenomenal service,” says Derek. For any of your celebration needs, support local and contact the best, Tents and Events.

Desert Modern Florals With a priority of being the best, Desert Modern Florals is the premier floral boutique for anyone planning their wedding. Started in July of 2016 by mother and daughter duo, Mary and Juliana Varkonyi, the inception of the flower boutique began with a desire to create and design spectacular arrangements reminiscent of the time when Mary had her own shop. “We have an unstructured and organic approach to design,” says Juliana. It is one of the things that sets Desert Modern Florals apart from other flower shops. They have a deeply rooted passion for what they do, which customers can easily see in the arrangements they produce. “We love to incorporate what’s around us into our design concepts … with my youthful approach and my mother’s creative experience, [it has] brought our style a lot of attention,” she says. Since the business has garnered a lot of popularity, the ideal time to book them is six months to a year in advance. The two hard-working owners take the time to get to know each couple, which in turn produces a “wedding that is completely tailored just for them.” In the future, they hope to travel for weddings and open up a second location in Seattle, WA. With their stand-out designs and personable service, any couple would be lucky to have them.

Wedding Day beaut y

Book Review | By: KRYSTA AYERS |

Weddings, 2018

Weddiculous by Jamie Lee with Jacqueline Novak Dealing with the stress of table arrangements, dress fittings and tiny details deserves some relaxation time. Read comedian Jamie Lee’s relatable wedding guide and laugh at the practical advice on wedding planning and more. It’s an unconventional handbook that will make you laugh and put you at ease.

Celebrate by Lauren Conrad Read from the lifestyle guru herself, Lauren Conrad, as she dishes out advice about throwing the best parties and making your own party favors and desserts. The book has a chapter devoted to weddings that will help any bride in need. Even better, it’s a guide that you can use all year long—not just for your wedding—and it makes the best coffee table book.

I Do but I Don’t by Kamy Wicoff Kamy Wicoff is asking the most important, least talked about, question: “How can I do this without debt and without losing my mind?” If you’re planning your wedding far in advance, you’ll appreciate the advice found in this book— it’s a clear-headed look into how you can plan the wedding you want within your budget.

The 5 Love Languages by Gary D. Chapman This is an oldie but an important goodie. In “The 5 Love Languages”, Gary D. Chapman quizzes us on the different ways that we express our love and the ways that we can give love to our significant other. Some of us need more words of affirmation, while others may need tangible things. This is great for building communication and understanding what you need as a couple before walking down the aisle.

Style Me Pretty Weddings by Abby Larson For those of us that are more visual, this is a great book to keep beside you for inspiration. It has great tips on styling not only yourself and your wedding court, but the wedding itself. It will easily help you figure out what your wedding style is in case you’re not sure either. 100

Small Wedding | By: ANDREA MACIAS |

s

Weddings, 2018

t

he most important part of any wedding is saying, “I do.” As the lucky bride ambles down the aisle to say those words, be it in a church or on a sandy shore, one thing remains the same at any wedding—all eyes are on you. Now, deciding how many pairs of eyes you want glued to you during that moment is a factor some couples are questioning. Instead of large, lavish wedding parties, couples are choosing smaller and more intimate gatherings.

Small weddings offer a personal experience for everyone. More one-on-one time can be spent between the bride, groom and the wedding guests. There’s also a sigh of relief in that couples don’t need to stress about reserving a large venue, sums of food and any other meticulous details. Small weddings definitely have certain advantages and don’t necessarily have to feel small. If you’re on the fence about whether to pursue a small wedding or not, we are here to convince you with some suggestions to pull off the best small wedding. The most obvious advantage of having a smaller wedding is budget. Couples that cap their guest list to 50 or less save hundreds more than a couple that host a party of 150. This allows couples to splurge in other areas of their wedding. Couples can easily agree and feel happy about going with their first choices for a caterer or decorations when they have that wiggle room in their wallet. So, say yes to those higher-end entrees or top-shelf bar offerings; you can afford it. As mentioned above, a smaller wedding allows for more intimacy and personal touches. Couples can be completely present as they exchange their vows without feeling the nerves that arise with sharing that moment with unfamiliar faces. Your smaller wedding will feel more like a ceremony than a performance with less guests. It also provides quality time to mingle with your guests and core group quicker so that you’re free to enjoy other aspects of your wedding. Details, details, details. Smaller doesn’t have to mean simple. Because you now have extra cash lying around, invest that into your wedding invitations, decorations, dress or entertainment. Customize your designs to your taste to make unique center pieces, DIY party favors and dress up anything you can think of. Although, keep a keen eye and stay constructive and critical of your work as mess-ups are easier to catch in a smaller crowd. Finding a space to occupy all your guests can be difficult with a big wedding. Often, banquet halls or hotel ballrooms lack personality and are strict on capacity. Consider something outside the box and get creative when searching for your wedding venue. Try a local museum or art gallery. Step outside to your favorite park or greenhouse or inside your favorite library— the options are endless. Plus, owners might be a little more accommodating to your needs knowing your guest list doesn’t reach 100+ people. There are so many other perks to having a smaller wedding. Entertainment can be a hands-on experience for guests. Create stations where guests can play games or create art. Opt for a custom Spotify playlist rather that a big band or DJ if your small party is focused more on chit-chat than dance. You can also consider a round or semi-circle seating arrangement to give your guests a clearer view during the ceremony. It’s something that can’t be done with more chairs and bodies at a big wedding. Regardless, give as much attention you would to your small wedding as if you had a big bash.

I didn’t want to choose colors that could be overwhelming, because the beach view and palm trees are beautiful on their own. e all have that one friend who shouldn’t be allowed to choose her own wardrobe, let alone her dress on the biggest day of your

life. On the other hand, we have all seen the

famous wedding scene in Sex and the City (ignore

the fact that Carrie got stood up) where Miranda,

Charlotte and Samantha look absolutely stunning in each of their very different bridesmaids dresses in bold colors. This was an epic moment in wedding fashion history and can make all the difference at your own wedding. To help you decide, we have come up with some simple questions to help you choose whether to take the reigns of this satin chariot or to let your bridesmaids choose their own unique styles.

Dresses Do you need control and crave structure?

| By: JANENE ROJAS |

Your Choice or Theirs?

If you don’t, then maybe different looks and interesting choices could be an exciting part of your festivities. Blues, pinks, purples of different lengths could make for a parade of gorgeous dresses that bring out the unique qualities in each of your bridesmaids. On the other hand, if you do need control and structure, the weight of the “what will they choose?” question may be too heavy to handle during the already stressful wedding planning. The easiest solution for control freaks is to choose bridesmaid’s dresses and accessories. Someone with the desire for structure and tradition may prefer the uniformed look of matching bridesmaids. If you are this type of person but go against your nature and decide to let bridesmaids choose, remember, it is now up to them. Wanting to alter and change their dresses every time they present you with options and ideas could cause annoyance in the bunch. If you have had the idea

of a specific look since you were a girl, then you

show of gowns that fuels the excitement before you even step foot on that aisle.

People are interested in what the girls are wearing and the next look to come. In the case that they have repeating gowns, the excitement is usually settled after the first bridesmaid walks down the aisle and a glimpse of the dresses is already had. If you want the curiosity, glam and glitz to start and end with you, then maybe choose one repeating dress for everyone else.

Are you good at setting guidelines? Allowing your bridesmaids to choose their own dress could go amazingly if you know how to do it right. The main rule to granting bridesmaids the gift of deciding on their own dress is simple; guidelines. To create beauty out of differences there must be a unifying idea and vision. Designating color scheme rules is a great place to start when developing guidelines. Do you want each dress to have a different style and length, but stay in the limits of a matching color scheme? Then all you have to do is decide on light guidelines for lengths and necklines such as; not too short or not much cleavage, whatever your preference is, then let your bridesmaids explore their options based on color palette. Neckline played a major role in Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha’s bridesmaid gowns in the movie. They each had slight cleavage showing with variations of a sweetheart neckline. Floor length gowns were the style, with frills at the bottom. Even though they daringly contrasted in color, wearing fire engine red, tuxedo black, and royal

blue, their neckline, length and details unified the look. To achieve this you can choose color, length, neckline, or a specific detail like fringe, ruffle, or frills, to set the tone. Setting guidelines allows your bridesmaids to look unique and beautiful, yet cohesive when mixing and matching. There you have it, a few questions to ask yourself before deciding on bridesmaid attire. Above all, remember the bridal party is there to make your day easier not more stressful! Whichever option you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Wedding Traditions

Love is celebrated in many different ways, and around the world, there are traditions that make a wedding ceremony truly special. By incorporating your culture into your wedding day, it poses as a tribute to where you came from. Here is how other cultures around the world tie the knot.

Japanese Tradition - Saké Sharing Ceremony Sake has been seen as a creator of formal bonds in the Japanese culture. Known as “san-san-kudo,” or “three-three-nine,” this tradition calls for the joining of the bride, groom and both sets of parents. Using three flat saké cups stacked one on top of another, each person takes three sips to total nine, which is a lucky number in their culture. This then signals that a bond between both families has been created.

German Tradition Log Cutting Ceremony “Baumstamm sägen” or “saw the tree trunk” is a wedding tradition that requires some arm work as a representation of the first obstacle that the couple must overcome. They must express their abilities and willingness to master the hurdles that arise in marriage. Using a crosscut saw, both the bride and the groom must take hold of each handle and work together to cut through a log. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Peruvian Tradition - Cake Ribbons In Peruvian wedding traditions, their wedding cake has pieces of ribbon, with one of them tied to a ring, attached to the base of the cake and hanging over the sides. Before the cake is cut, the single women at the wedding must come up and pull at the ribbons. The one to pull the ribbon with the ring on it is said to be the one to marry next.

Indian Tradition The Shoe Stealing Game A game between the bride’s family and the groom’s, “joota chupia” begins with the bride’s family stealing the groom’s shoes. Because Indian wedding traditions often involve the removal of shoes before entering a canopy called the Mandap, the groom leaves his shoes outside, unguarded. This is when the bride’s family takes the shoes and awaits the family of the groom to retrieve the shoes. This is meant to show that both sides of the family have opened their hearts to each other, and began a union of both families ready for a lifetime of fun and laughter together.

tower of cream filled pastry puffs. Often dipped in a sweet sauce, they are also decorated with fruits, nuts and glazes.

Australian Tradition Unity Bowl Much like the well-known sand wedding tradition, Australia takes a bowl that friends and family can fill with colorful stones throughout the entire wedding celebration to symbolize the beauty that they bring to the bride and groom. The unity bowl is also supposed to begin with the elder generations and continue on in the family in order to honor their elders.

The Golden Hour referred to as “the golden hour.” At the end of the day, the photos you (and generations to come) will treasure most will be those of you and

your wedding photographer is to become comfortable in front of their camera. Think of it as an ice breaker, or first date with your photographer. This will make taking photos on your wedding day feel like second nature since you have done it before.”

The Dream Bouquet “If you have the option to splurge on your dream bouquet, DO IT! A beautiful bouquet goes a long way when photographing a wedding day.

Trust your photographer

A bouquet can be used to photograph details, accentuate centerpieces, and of course will look beautiful in bride and groom portraits.”

“It is always a good idea to discuss with your photographer what specific moments you are hoping to capture. You selected and hired your photographer because you fell in love with their style and artwork, so trust them with some creative license.”

Kristen Swanson Photography Hire the Right Makeup Artist “I usually shoot an engagement session before each wedding and I suggest that they do their wedding makeup trial for engagement, that way the bride can see if the makeup artist and style is a good fit. Brides who don’t usually wear a ton of makeup are shocked when they have makeup professionally done. It’s nice to show them that the camera softens makeup.”

Location, Location, Location “Couples should think about meaningful locations. It’s always nice to incorporate places that give meaning to their pictures.”

or anyone planning a wedding, deciding what goes on the menu can be a headache inducing decision. From taste testing the appetizers to dessert—satisfying everyone’s pallet while

still maintaining a variety for guests can be daunting. Rather than sticking to a traditional sit down dinner or providing buffet style meals,

take on the interactive trend that some couples are opting for.

Food bars and stations are the new way to feast. They offer guests the

opportunity to mingle while being entertained with the fixings provided

and fulfilling the stomach. Turn to Pinterest to mimic their beautiful spreads

or create your own interactive menu with do-it-yourself options, such as a make-your-own taco bar, or build your own pizza. You can even roll out the stops with a sushi bar.

The

Taco Bar

From soft shell to hard shell, tacos are always a crowd-pleaser, especially in the borderland. You can include both flour and corn tortillas, meat, chicken or a non-meat option. Spice up your tacos with different vegetables, salsas, sour cream and guacamole. A tequila bar nearby also makes a perfect pairing. If you want to stray away from traditional Mexican, mix and match your tacos

to different ethnic cuisines like Hawaiian fish tacos or Asian street food-inspired tacos.

Mimosa/Martini Bar Let your guests play mixologist with a mimosa or martini bar. A martini bar is a low-maintenance way to shake or stir up the fun. Display up to three do-ityourself recipes with your chosen booze, mixers and garnishes and let your guests pick their poison. You’ll also need basic bar tools like the martini glasses, a jigger, shaker and toothpicks. A colorful mimosa bar can work just the same with choices of fruit and juices.

Milkshake/ Smoothie Station Share the sweet sentiment of splitting a milkshake with your wedding guests. This classic can be the cherry on top to the end of your special day. Dress up your basic strawberry, chocolate and vanilla shakes with fixings like sprinkles, wafers, gummy bears, whipped cream and more. If you’re looking for a fruitier and healthier drink, a smoothie station with options like pineapples, strawberries and mangos can also be done.

WWW...Why a Weddings, 2018

Oh the digital age, where everything has it’s own website. With this in mind, modern couples are creating websites, to not only give guests important wedding details, but to also show off their union and “how it all began” stories. Will this be part of your wedding process? Let’s run through the pros and cons.

They keep people in the loop

All of your info about the big day is on your wedding website including your wedding countdown, location, dress code, registry, travel plans and a background story. It’s a foolproof method to remind people of who, what, when, where and how. It holds all of the core information plus extra if guests desire to see more. If there happens to be any last minute changes of location or any other detail, the wedding website can keep everyone up to date and on the same page.

Guests never have to worry about losing their invitation A wedding website is great for a forgetful guest who may misplace their invitation on the day of the wedding. Guests who travel, or are invited to many weddings, are more likely to resort to checking websites rather than carrying around their paper invitation. On the day of, with hundreds of people searching for the venue, allowing them to access location and directions via cell phone is a huge help to all.

RSVP with ease We no longer live in a stamp-and-send society and we are way too busy to take 100+ “attending/not attending” calls, thus, digital RSVP’s are a simple alternative. Many wedding websites allow you to RSVP on a link provided, making it extra simple for the bride and groom to tally the guest list.

The registry Wedding websites provide links to the wedding registries, which turn your site into a one-stop shop for guests. My favorite part about wedding websites is the travel gift option that most couples link on the page. Guests can choose something special to send the bride and groom while on honeymoon such as breakfast in bed at their hotel or fresh flowers from the areas gardens.

Share the memories It’s the perfect place to show off your engagement and wedding photos. For family and friends of the bride and groom, it is a must to save photos from the big day. A website makes it easy to share wedding photos without having to send out individual pictures to each guest. With easy editing and uploading, you can share 148

as much or as little as you want from the big day.

Cons

Some say it’s self-absorbed A common comment I’ve been seeing online is that some people believe that wedding websites are where couple’s go to show off. “Look at us and our professional photos, then read our long cheesy story, then buy presents for us”… it could be a little much. If you are a more private couple, then maybe just a few engagement pictures on social media will suffice.

Things can get overly digital In an e-mail everything era, it can be tough to decipher what should be via interweb and what should remain traditional. The wedding website should be an addition to a properly written and mailed invitation. This is the most important aspect of your wedding details and should

Latest & Newest

always be delivered through postal mail. I have encountered one too many family members being completely offended by modern e-vites

to the actual wedding day. Proper etiquette is and will always be ink

and paper. If being environmentally friendly or saving a few bucks is your goal, your best bet is sending out e-mailed invites for all other wedding details such as save the dates or the engagement party. This is where

your wedding website kicks in because most pre-made sites allow

Groomsmen Gifts It is always a special moment when the groom presents his groomsman with a thoughtful gift at the rehearsal dinner before the wedding. This gift should symbolize the friendship, be of good quality and be useful. According to proper wedding etiquette, groomsmen should all receive the same gift while the best man should receive a more personal or valuable one. With all of this in mind, it may be hard to figure out the best gifts for your loved ones. While classic favorites like cuff links or engraved pens are still very popular, here are some modern ideas for your groomsman gifts. Edison Amp Wood Gramophone Cell Phone Speaker Themanregistry.com For the music lovers, this vintage-looking speaker is both cool and useful. It is hand made in Missouri and handcrafted from real wood so no two are identical. The Edison Amp plays your music by taking diffused sound and amplifying it through the hand spun copper bell. It’s impressive looking and can even be used as home dÊcor.

A Personalized Baseball Bottle Opener Themanregistry.com For the beer and baseball loving crew, a real leather baseball cut in half with a magnetic stainless steel bottle opener fastened directly to the back is a fun way to combine personalization and usefulness. They can stick it to the refrigerator until the next time they pop open a beer. This timeless gift is also at a great price point of $26.95, with free personalizing on the front of the ball.

A Monthly Cocktail Subscription For those that appreciate a good drink, enrolling your best friends in a monthly cocktail club ensures that they’ll remember your big day every time their ingredients arrive at their doorstep. There are a dozen great alcohol subscription websites that offer options like homemade gin kits or mini bottles, plus ingredients for individual cocktail recipes. Some higher-priced options send full size bottles along with the full size cocktail ingredient. Beer of the month is also a trendy gift your groomsmen might enjoy. Monthly kits range in price to fit any budget.

Adventure For the adrenaline junkies, booking a flying lesson is now easier than ever. On lifestyle sites like cloud9living.com, liviginsocial.com and Groupon.com, you can order experiences for your groomsmen that are sure to create memories. Racecar driving, golfing packages, white water rafting and hot air balloon rides are also popular picks.
