Weddings, 2019

Editor-In-Chief

ho doesn’t love a wedding? The romance and feeling of love is in the

air. The details can be exciting, yet daunting. As we dance forward into

wedding season, many brides are scrambling to put their personal touch

on all the details: the colors, choosing the flowers and the special dress that

will be laced in a bride’s mind forever. The wedding must be perfect, however,

marriage is more than the party that you throw for your nearest and dearest. The journey

of life is different for each of us. No matter the timeline of this thing we call “adulting,” it often starts with a plan; graduate from college and land a great career. The icing on the cake is when somehow, somewhere, you fall in love with that someone who makes your heart skip a beat, the one who makes you see forever. Each dream is unique, but they often come with kids and/or dogs, travel, followed by retiring by the pool in later years, drinking your favorite glass of wine and holding hands as you remember a life well-lived. I digress … back to the excitement and reality of a wedding. As you plan that perfect day, imagine yourself in your beautiful dress, holding the perfect flowers and sliding the ring on your finger that you can’t take your eyes off of. Remember that we don’t have to look far to spark the creativity and individuality each bride aspires to have for their special day … sometimes, inspiration is right around the corner. There’s something special about new beginnings—it reminds me of spring when everything begins to bloom. I wish you the best as you plan your wedding. Remember, if plans change (your venue is overbooked, your budget changes, the flowers you’ve always wanted don’t bloom during your wedding month) or happen out of order, don’t sweat it. Sometimes, when things change, you get an even better result than you expected. The City Weddings Magazine is evolving! This year, Managing Editor Kim received more submissions of love stories from our local couples as well as our local photographers, who realize how special it is to have their photos chosen to appear in the magazine. Because of this, we’ve decided to give the magazine a new look. In February, we launch our first Weddings issue for 2019, then in the summer we tweak things with a new summer cover and finish with a winter cover—we call this our covers-by-season. Some of the stories in the magazine will remain the same, some might not. We’re excited about this growth and want to hear your feedback. Love is a many splendored thing, so the song says. Love can never be explained or quantified, but when you meet that person, “the one,” there is a promise. Life as you know it will never be the same. After all these years, I still believe that love is worth it.

THEY MET Weddings, 2019

We were both living in Australia at the time and had a mutual friend, Kelly. She introduced us over FaceTime and we soon realized we were both going back to the States for a wedding, the same wedding. My sister was getting married to Marcelo’s childhood best friend! I was the maid of honor and Marcelo was a groomsmen. We first officially met the day of the rehearsal ceremony in Denver, on a very cold spring morning. We chatted for hours that same night at the rehearsal dinner and the day of the wedding we could not [stay] away from each other. We flew back to Australia and have been together ever since.

THE PROPOSAL We had both been talking about getting married for a while and knew that is where we were heading. It was definitely long awaited! My parents were in the process of selling their house where I grew up and it had always been my dream to get married in the backyard. We didn’t think we would be able to get married there, so Marcelo and my brothers put up twinkle lights all over my favorite tree and childhood swing. On June 10, 2018 we were hanging out with my family in the backyard, Marcelo was pushing me on the swing, and then he stepped in front of me, got on one knee, and asked me to marry him! It was so special that my family could be there and celebrate our engagement all together.

MEMORABLE MOMENT The best part of it all was getting to celebrate and hang out with most of our closest friends and family from all over the world for the entire weekend.

TRADITIONS Weddings, 2019

The couple had a traditional Antiochian Orthodox Christian wedding ceremony [that] involved much symbolism including the exchanging of crowns, which represent the couple coming into the Kingdom of God and taking their place as a king and queen in their marital kingdom. The wedding had influences from Catherine’s Venezuelan/Spanish background such as Salsa and Merengue Dancing, and from Chris’s Syrian/Lebanese background, which included a traditional Arabic dance, called the Dabke. A whole host of handmade traditional Syrian deserts were generously made by his aunts.

THE PROPOSAL After grad school, Chris got an exciting offer to work in Singapore, while Catherine pursued a great opportunity in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the two had to be apart for a while. Catherine and Chris reunited on the Island of Bali where Chris surprised her with a proposal, one that included moving back home to El Paso and starting a life together.

INSPIRATION The inspiration for the wedding theme was “Palm Deco”—playing twofold on the landscape and plants present in the Southwest, as well as tropical palms and philodendron; present in Southeast Asia where the couple lived and worked for a period of time.

WEDDING INSPIRATION I wanted everything to be classic and elegant. Colors of predominantly white with touches of blush and gold. For my dress, I wanted a cross between Kate Middleton and Pippa Middleton.

ADVICE My advice would be to remember to take one moment throughout the reception to take it all in. Coronado Country Club kindly saved the hors d’oeuvres we missed out on during the cocktail hour and Joe and I were able to take a few moments to sit down, savor our food and appetizers, and take in the breathtaking beauty that Caroline created at our reception. We were able to notice the details of the small candles, the different flowers in our arrangements, and see all the smiling faces of our guests.

MEMORABLE MOMENT We toasted out of a Nuernberg bridal cup after our best man, maid of honor, and my twin brother gave their toasts. My brother read the tradition and story of the cup to our guests and Joe and I had to drink out of the same cup at the same time. It was really cute, kind of difficult, but what a cute memory!

THE PROPOSAL Weddings, 2019

As superstition has it today, the lady who catches the bouquet and the man who catches the garter will be the next two to get married. Who knew that a medieval tradition would foretell our engagement. While at the wedding of a friend, I caught the bouquet and Oscar caught the garter. Little did I know, Oscar had already purchased the ring and was worried that this would ruin the surprise. Some call it superstition, but I like to call it fate. Oscar proposed a couple months later in Chicago at Millennium park, after watching the Packers defeat the Texans in Greenbay.

ADVICE I do not regret investing in a wedding planner (at least for the day of). Our wedding planner, Angelica, and her team were so instrumental in helping our day run as smooth as possible! She helped us with things that you may not think of when planning a wedding. Oscar and I, along with my family, had peace of mind and were stress free that day, which is so important for your wedding day.

TRADITIONS For the most part we had a traditional Catholic wedding. Before the reception we had a cocktail hour with signature drinks, I had a cucumber sour drink garnished with tajin and cucumber and the groom’s signature drink was a Paloma. We also had a sparkler exit and brought in a taco truck to serve some delicious late night snacks, which definitely hit the spot after dancing all night.

Albert is very proud of his Mexican heritage and we wanted to incorporate traditional Mexican décor with a modern elegant twist. Some of the vibrant colors were inspired from the movie “Coco” (dark fuchsia, turquoise, marigold yellow and red). 38

We wanted our wedding to feel intimate, romantic, and organic. After we decided to get married at our own home, we pulled inspiration from our surroundings. The beautiful mountain view was the backdrop for our ceremony, and we complemented the Spanish Colonial style of our house by incorporating lots of candlelight, cascading white flowers and greenery, and a Spanish acoustic guitarist. 40

The Groom’s Guide: For Men on the Verge of Marriage By The Black Tux The void is officially filled. Us boys can finally get the advice we so desperately need not to mess up the big day. As the title suggests, this book serves as a comprehensive guide for grooms, covering everything from picking the right tuxedo to nailing the dance.

The Mother of the Bride Book: The Ultimate Wedding Planning Guide for Mom! By Katie Martin As long as she wants to, there’s nothing wrong with letting mom do some of the planning. If she, or they, have indeed volunteered, this little book can definitely facilitate the process. Afterall, the times may have changed, but maternal wisdom never goes out of style.

Around the World Catering Service Founded nine years ago, Around the World Catering has established itself as El Paso’s preeminent catering company over the past decade. There’s no secret to their success, owners Chris Morrill and Santiago Reyes simply never fail to deliver on the biggest occasions. Although the team does all sorts of events, they broke onto the scene with weddings and still consider them to be their foremost specialty. For that reason, they limit themselves to just 15 a year. Chris explained the logic to me, saying: “Our service is part of that special moment, so we want to make sure we get everything perfect ... doing more than 15 a year would take away from that special moment.” Perfect really is the right word to describe their work. First of all, the dishes are absolutely delicious and all clients are invited to free test meals to see for themselves beforehand. In addition to tasting good, the food is always presented elegantly and in line with the reception’s overall aesthetic. Of course, everything—from the food to the silverware setups—is customizable. Chris and Santiago work in close contact with the couples during the planning period to ensure every wish is met. Interested wedding planners shouldn’t delay, the cooks already have 12 weddings booked for 2019.

We wanted something that was classy, fun, and elegant. I think that because of my art background I’ve always really liked Art Deco. That time period seemed like it would be fun to have our guests dress up in. We wanted to have everyone immersed into that time, so we really encouraged people to come in costume and hired a big band. I made sure all the jewelry that I purchased to wear at the wedding was actually from the 1920s. The beaded dress was Art Deco inspired, as well. My favorite color is green and my birthstone is emerald, so we thought how perfect is it that St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday, making it easier for people to attend. For the above reasons, we had green be the color for the 56

I purchased my beautiful, off-white lace veil in Barcelona, Spain in 2016 because I knew one day I would want a Spanish-themed wedding. I had this vision of being a “Spanish Bride” since I was a teenager. … The bouquets were made of crepe paper flowers. … We hung hand-made, personalized papel-picado from the ceiling. My grandfather sewed the crepe paper streamers we used as the sweet table backdrop. Not to be left out, my grandmother cut Nopal paddles that we used to form a heart in the middle of our centerpieces. We placed family wedding photos of our ancestors on the venue fireplace mantle. The menu of amazing Mexican cuisine was developed from our families 60

Your wedding day will be one of the most photographed days of your life. You will want to make sure that your makeup in these photos looks timeless and classic, since you’ll be looking back at these photos for many years to come.

You should hire a makeup artist who understands makeup’s capabilities, lighting, and how to accentuate your facial features. Your artist should opt for long lasting products that will endure the big day.

Here are some things to consider before and after you hire your makeup artist.

What type of makeup artist do I need? You need a makeup artist trained in print work. This type of artist is most qualified to do weddings; their specialty may be in bridal, headshots, magazine work or fashion. They should understand how your makeup will photograph depending on indoor or outdoor settings with flash, studio lighting, direct sun, filtered sun or shade.

Why are there so many different pricings for makeup artists? Just like with any other product or service, the price range reflects a wide spectrum of quality. Artists bring different levels of experience, talent, types of products, etc., and all of that is reflected in the cost. To evaluate what level of skill they have, you need to scrutinize their portfolio of work and check what level of training they have. Have they been trained at a makeup counter or by other professional makeup artists? Look at their website and read reviews. You pay for their experience and www.thecitymagazineelp.com

the luxury of having them apply your makeup perfectly on your wedding day.

What should I tell my makeup artist? You need to share everything, such as the time of day of your ceremony and reception, whether your wedding will be indoors or outdoors, the time of year and the location.

Should I bring photos to my preview? Yes, bring photos you like of yourself, your wedding dress, your flowers, the bridesmaids dress color, and the wedding venue. Do not expect photos from Pinterest or Instagram to be realistically recreated as these photos are often photoshopped and can be visually misleading.

Should I have my makeup done for people or photos? Both. Brides are seen up close with their friends and family and through many different types of lenses: such as an iPhone, a professional camera, and possibly a camcorder.

Telling your makeup artist what you like is as Find out exactly what’s included in the price. You needto important as what you don’t. THE NEW TREND OF

Artful Invites Hand illustrated invitations are one of my favorite new trends this year and are sweeping soon-to-weds off their feet. A one of a kind, hand painted wedding invitation allows brides and grooms to set the wedding mood by truly showing off their unique personality as a couple.

Whether it’s by including your favorite flower, an image that celebrates your first encounter, or even just an image of the wedding location, there are so many ways to create this kind of invite. All you need is a little inspiration and an artist or graphic designer to turn it into reality, and voila, your very own work of art for all of your friends and families to delight in.

| By: JANENE ROJAS |

Creative Crest Some bride and grooms choose to place the time and date of their wedding in a custom made crest. These types of designs look creative and sophisticated. Decorating the outside of the crest is easy. Some use their favorite plant or blooming flower; others are adorned with little critters—like chickens for a farmhouse wedding—or bees for a springtime affair.

92

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Weddings, 2019

ARTFUL INVITES

A Family Portrait A little hand drawn portrait of the bride and groom is possibly the cutest route to go. A cartoon like bride and groom, plus the whole family—dog, cat, any children—will be sure to bring smiles to the faces of those invited. Four Legged Friends A popular way to announce the big day is by making your pet the star of the show, or at least the preview. Cute little pet portraits are definitely a personal and playful option in creating save the dates, or even the actual invite.

Set the Scene Use the wedding venue as invitation inspiration! I think this is the easiest way to add personality to wedding invites for those of us that are not so creative. Focus on the wedding location and have your artist create the scene. A hand painted image of a glistening ocean beyond a sandy beach will leave your friends and family in awe. Also, think of what kind of activities the wedding will include, like dinner with a mountain view or boating. Location and activities alone could very well supply the artist with everything you need to create your dream wedding invitation.

Nature & Calligraphy Some couples prefer a more traditional approach. Dazzling calligraphy can be the eye-catching aspect of the card, enhanced by extras like a surrounding wreath, leaves or flowers.

Bright & Bold Watercolor, floral patterns, and vivid images like a bright shining sun above the wedding details is an option for the bold. Colorful flowers surrounding the entire card is a popular way to present a spring wedding, and a great way to give invites that people will want to hold on to.

Stamped and Ready To Go One of my favorite things about these work of art invites is the creative use of stamps. Many couples are mixing and matching vintage-looking stamps to ensure that these carefully created invitations are delivered in style and grace.

When it comes to your invites, get creative! Don’t limit yourself only to what you read here. Search the the web, get inspired, and use the best moments of your relationship to make your invitations unique.

THEY MET

Weddings, 2019 I met her in Organic Chemistry II in the giant Welch 2.224 auditorium. She sat in the third row on the left side of the auditorium, and after laying eyes on her I quickly surmised that I would be sitting there for the rest of the semester. I found her dedication to succeeding in our class attractive, and she quickly became much more than a classmate in my eyes. ~Spencer He first asked me to be his date for his Texas Cowboys formal. He really wasn’t like the other boys in college ... and a lot of his qualities stood out to me. He was funny, outgoing, athletic, intelligent ... and also respectful, extremely kind and loving. ~Jessica

THE PROPOSAL

My UT friends and I planned a trip to go to the Texas vs. Cal Berkeley game in Oakland and Jessica and a few of her friends were planning to go as well. I knew that I was ready to pop the question, and I love San Fran, so this was the perfect opportunity! I began plotting a game-day morning proposal followed by a surprise brunch with all of our friends that were in town for the game. I hired a local photographer, made a reservation, picked out the ring, and we were off to the races ‌ She said yes! It was an absolute blast and I would do it all over again if I could. A personal thanks to all of friends who were there that day and helped me carry out the plan.

INSPIRATION

Since we were getting married in one of the oldest and grandest ballrooms in New Orleans, I didn’t want it to be super contemporary. I wanted it to be elegant and romantic, but to also reflect the grand setting we were in. I really drew my inspiration from New Orleans itself. I tried to keep it authentic New Orleans as much as I could, so that our guests really felt like they were experiencing something they can’t 106

get anywhere else.

During our first meeting with our wedding planner, we deemed our wedding a “mullet.” We wanted the ceremony to be a very traditional catholic mass (the business in the front), then the reception to be the most elegant, fun party our guests had attended (the party in the back). We worked hard 108

to make sure every detail matched our fun, but elegant vibe.

When Tyler and I were planning our wedding, we didn’t even know where to start. All we knew was that we wanted destination and I didn’t want the tropics. As a kid, I never pictured my wedding, but I did picture getting married in the snow. When we selected Angelica as our wedding planner we trusted her with everything. She took that little information and researched numerous locations for us until we fell in love with Bigfork, Montana. After we selected, the cold, the snow and the beautiful countryside of Montana 110

was our inspiration. Angelica gave us our perfect wedding.

edding gifts, you spend days thinking of the perfect thing, hunting for the bride’s favorite color to wrap it in, and top it all with a big puffy bow. Wouldn’t it be nice to receive an equally thoughtful gift upon arrival on the big day? One of the newest trends that will be huge in 2019—and surely for years to come—is gifting each wedding goer with a thoughtful basket of goodies as they arrive to the wedding or hotel. Weddings are no longer a one-way gifting experience. You may be thinking, aren’t wedding expenses high enough already? Although this is true, gift baskets can be as lavish or low-cost as you want them to be. People are turning to gift baskets as an easy way to relay itinerary details and maps, or offer convenience items to their loved ones during destination wedding stays. Even with a wedding in your own home town, a good basket provides that sweet and spice, it’s like the final pinch of “everything nice” that is sure to win everyone over and have guests feeling warm and fuzzy inside, and not just because of the champagne. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Maps and Itinerary If you and your guests are in unfamiliar territory, your basket should include a little itinerary for the week, along with a map and lodging/transportation information. A list of nearby restaurants, bars, and coffee shops is also helpful for when family and friends have a little down time.

Recovery Brides and grooms planning on having wild fiestas might want to include hangover recovery kits. Items like painkillers, do not disturb door signs, and mouthwash are cute little additions to throw in there for those crazy cousins of ours.

ender just ain’t what it used to be.

Women went to work in the 70s, the

supreme court ruled gay marriage legal

in 2015, and now many commentators are

even questioning the validity of gender itself–does it have biological roots or is it merely a social construct? It seems only natural then that wedding ceremonies should evolve to reflect society’s changing norms. Take bridesmaids and groomsmen; a growing number of to-be newlyweds are ditching the traditional format, instead choosing their wedding party members based on the importance of each relationship, not gender. Although this is all really exciting, gender-neutral wedding parties pose some difficulties for the planner. Don’t sweat it though, with just a few extra considerations your woke wedding bash will be beautiful and enjoyable. First, make sure that the outfits match. You obviously can’t expect a bridesman to wear a sexy a-line, but there’s no reason the suits and dresses can’t be of the same color and aesthetic. For a simpler yet just as synchronized effect, boutonnières serve as gender neutral accessories. Gender-neutral gifts for coed wedding parties are also recommended. Sure, separate presents are feasible but your time is valuable and there’s no reason to further complicate the already stressful planning period. Hair and makeup can also be a bit complicated. Part of the tradition certainly carries over: The bride or groom should treat their respective party to pre-wedding grooming sessions, all costs paid. The question, however, is

Weddings, 2019 whether this can take place in the same suite or if boys and girls should go their separate ways. There’s no right answer to this one, the decision will come down to group dynamics and logistics–will everyone be comfortable together and is it convenient? We shouldn’t get too caught up in frivolous details. The intimate experience at your celebration is what matters most; that is, afterall, why you’ve decided to forego tradition and include all of your best friends. To that end, creating the right opportunities for you and your party to bond is what’s most important. These moments can be simple, like a game night or dinner at your favorite restaurant–just make sure to not alienate anyone with gendered themes. Although this may all seem a bit overwhelming, I promise that it’s worth it. You deserve to be surrounded by the people you love most on wedding day.
