t gives me a great deal of pleasure as mayor to extend a warm greeting to you. Whether you are a new resident of our community or a short time visitor, we hope you will agree that Clarendon is a special place with warm caring people and much to offer. We have a lot to be proud of in Clarendon, and we are excited to share it with you. There are many family activities throughout the year, including the Saints' Roost Celebration in July, annual Colonel Goodnight Chuckwagon Cookoff in September, our Courthouse Lighting Ceremony and Small Business Saturday in November, and Christmas shopping events at our local merchants in December.

To learn about our community, stop by our Visitor Center at 110 S. Kearney Street at the Mulkey Theatre. There you’ll find the office of the Chamber of Commerce and the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation and people who can help answer any question about our town. The Mulkey itself is a great source of pride. The 1946 theatre reopened last summer after a ten-year rehabilitation project that transformed the Mulkey into a conference center and live performance hall in addition to a movie house. We invite you to stop by the Mulkey at night to see its beautiful display of neon and LED lighting. The Mulkey features entertainment regularly on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. The new Clarendon Aquatics Center will be completed this fall and will open for the 2021 season. This project has been made possible by a generous anonymous benefactor, the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, as well as several local donors and foundations. In addition to an excellent public school system, we are very proud of Clarendon College, which was rated the number two community college in the State of 4

The Saints’ Roost Museum is an excellent place to spend some time learning about our history. The Board of Directors is in the early stages of planning for a new building project. The museum is open daily Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We encourage you to visit Prospect Park just south of downtown on Kearney Street – a beautiful place for family picnics, reunions, birthday parties, or to just let your kids run and play. We also invite you to visit our numerous historic markers throughout the city and especially encourage you to visit our beautiful 1890 County Courthouse. Greenbelt Lake, located just north of town, is also something we’re quite proud of. Greenbelt offers fishing, camping and other recreational activities. And we are pleased to have an excellent disc golf course there as well. We hope you enjoy your stay and find that Clarendon is a great place to live or visit. n 1878, a charismatic preacher led a group of Northern Methodists to the frontier of the Texas Panhandle to settle at the junction of Carroll Creek and the Salt Fork of the Red River. Rev. L.H. Carhart set out to establish a Christian colony built on the values of temperance and education, and he named it Clarendon in honor of his wife, Clara. As the third settlement in the Panhandle, Clarendon stood apart from the towns of Mobeetie and Tascosa, which were known for saloons and rowdiness. The colony forbade alcohol, built a church as one of its first landmarks, and planned an academy to bring education to the plains. The neighbors said Clarendon

was where the saints roosted. The nickname stuck… Saints’ Roost. Nine years later, the future of the colony came into question when it became apparent that the Ft. Worth & Denver Railroad would miss the town. A vote was taken, and by the fall of 1887 houses, businesses, and people were all making the move six miles south to the present site of “new” Clarendon. The railroad brought people and commerce; but it also brought new lifestyles with saloons and other “vices.” And yet, the town did not lose sight of its original ambitions, becoming the home of the Panhandle’s first Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, and

African-American congregations and establishing the area’s first college in 1898. Donley County eventually re-established prohibition in 1902, and Saints’ Roost again banished alcohol sales until 2013 when voters reversed the 111-year-old tradition. Today, if you like, you can raise a glass in old Saints’ Roost, but there’s no escaping the town’s original character. With a variety of churches and faith-based services and one of the highest-rated community colleges in the state, Clarendon remains true to its principles and welcomes visitors and newcomers to stay all night… or stay a little longer.

Chuckwagon Cookoff Since 1995, the Saints’ Roost Museum has paid tribute to the legendary Panhandle cattleman Col. Charles Goodnight with a cookoff in his honor on the fourth Saturday in September. Over the last two decades, the museum fundraiser has grown to be one of the most popular events Clarendon hosts and is considered as one of the best Chuckwagon cookoffs in the nation, receiving the 2014 Event Award from the American Chuck Wagon Association.

When the colonel bolted a food box and folding table to the rear of a surplus army wagon in 1866, he probably never dreamed the impact his “Chuck” wagon would have throughout the West. The invention became commonplace

Every year, the Col. Charles Goodnight Chuckwagon Cookoff hosts more than a dozen cooking teams working on authentic wagons who go head-to-head to battle for cash prizes and bragging rights at one of the nation’s premier cookoffs. Visitors to the Saints’ Roost Museum or the nearby Charles Goodnight Historical Center in Goodnight will notice both those locations are marked by 22-foot tall steel arrows painted in the traditional colors of the Comanches.

Those sculptures by Charles A. Smith are just two among dozens of similar arrows across 52 counties in the Panhandle and South Plains installed to honor historical sites, events, and artifacts in museums that link this region to the Native Americans who last roamed this area. It is named after Quanah Parker to recognize his role as the chief of the Comanche people.

The markers in Clarendon and Goodnight highlight the historic relationship between Quanah Parker and Col. Charles Goodnight, and the Native American artifacts and Red River Wars exhibits in the Museum as well as memorializing the presence of native people in this area. Whoot! Whoot! All aboard! Family fun and great bargains will be a regular occurrence at Clarendon’s Whistle-Stop Trade Days & Farmers Market when it has its grand reopening next spring. Located on US 287 East, the Whistle-Stop Trade Days draws crowds to town throughout the year, although the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the venue in 2020. Owners Kimberly and Jordan Green provide a truly unique shopping and entertainment experience. On the first Saturday of each month from March through December, the Whistle-Stop hosts more than 100 vendors selling everything from homemade jellies to locally made goat milk soaps and lotions to

clothes to furniture to junk. It’s a shopper’s dream come true! On the Road Again!

Howardwick couple's PBS series returns for fourth season

rom shark cage diving in South Africa, to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, to exploring Buddhist caves along the legendary Mekong River in Laos, traveling Donley County residents Nikki and Dusty Green are off on another action-packed adventure around the world. And once again, you’re cordially invited to come along. But this time, they say, it’s going to be a little different. As much of the travel world remains under lockdown in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Greens and their grassroots-to-riches travel show “Two for the Road” are back for a thrilling fourth season, featuring all new episodes that will begin premiering on public television stations around the country beginning October 1st. And the timing, they say, couldn’t be better. “We’re incredibly excited to get the new season out there of course, but especially now, given all that’s happening in our world,” said Dusty. “Not just because we could all certainly use a feel-good escape from our dayto-day, but it’s also important to keep in mind that there’s still this big, beautiful world out there. Life is still happening. Travel will come back. And it’s a great time to remind folks of all that.” And in their engaging new episodes (all of which were filmed before the pandemic took hold) the Greens are taking viewers around the world once again. Over the course of six new half-hour shows, Nik and Dusty dive into a wide variety of spectacular destinations and fascinating cultures spanning three continents. And yes, the Greens say there are certainly plenty of thrills and adventure in the offing in the new season, but loyal viewers especially will notice a few major differences from seasons past. One of them, they say, is a greater focus on storytelling.

“There’s plenty of adventure for sure,” said Nik, who also takes a terrifying leap off the world’s largest swing later in the season. “But this season we really tried harder to focus on improving our storytelling, so that it’s not just adrenaline and go-go-go all the time. In every episode there are at least one or two really great stories that are really touching. Stories that really helped us as travelers really connect to these places and the people and these cultures.” A few of her favorites, Nik says: a story about Namibia’s legendary Himba tribe, and how their culture is disappearing amidst an historic drought. The story about the tradition of Boo Boo Hill in the Bahamas. The street artists who are bringing new life and color to South Africa’s cities. And the Buddhist ritual of morning alms giving in Luang Prabang. “We love the adventure part of it all, of course,” said Nik. “But what we really love the most about travel is the connections we make with the people we meet along the way. And hearing their stories. And learning about their cultures. It’s really uplifting, and really beautiful. And we want to share more of that with everybody.” And a big part of what helps them connect with locals around the world is the fact that they actually shoot the program themselves, without the need of a traditional TV production crew. Which they say not only makes their show incredibly unique, but gives their show a grounded, real-world style of storytelling that is more organic and more authentic. “We don’t have a director and a field producer and a sound person and all that,” said Dusty. “It’s just the two of us, shooting the show entirely on the fly and entirely in the moment. It’s completely experiential. We don’t rehearse or script anything or know what might happen on any given day. Which makes it a tremendous challenge of course. But at the same time, because we look like a couple of regular tourists, we can blend into a place extremely well and not damage the authenticity of a scene or an interview with the kind of attention that a big TV crew can bring. So it’s all very real, and all very heartfelt.” Season four represents another 22

milestone for the Greens, whose dream of traveling the world and producing Two for the Road was born in 2007, when at the age of 35 the couple quit their jobs, sold all their possessions and decided to hit the road on a one-way ticket to South America, cameras in hand. Since then, the couple has traveled to roughly 50 countries across six continents, they’ve been nominated for three Lone Star Emmy awards, and they have a growing nationwide audience on public television. In addition to filming the show themselves, the couple also writes, edits, produces and markets the show from their home in the tiny hamlet of Howardwick, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, where they were both born and raised. New York City is 1684 miles from Howardwick. Los Angeles is 1137 miles. And Howardwick’s population? 402. Plus or minus a few, they say. But the Greens say living out on the Texas plains not only helps keep them connected to their families (and the show is very much a family affair – the Greens actually credit their cat Willie Nelson as an associate producer at the end of each show), it also allows them to approach travel - and television production - from a unique perspective. “I think it’s safe to say like a lot of folks in middle America especially we weren’t taught a great deal about other countries growing up,” said Dusty. “And very few of us have the means and/or the time to be able to travel the world. So I think it’s great to be able to share these fascinating and beautiful places and cultures through the wide eyes of a couple of small-town folks." The Greens are already in pre-production for Two for the Road season five, which will be shot entirely here in the United States - a first for the show. A decision that they say was only partly dictated by the ongoing COVID pandemic and related travel restrictions. “We’d actually been wanting to do a season of entirely domestic shows because there are truly so many incredible places to see and things to do right here in our own backyard,” said Nik. City officials and approximately 100 spectators gathered at the site of the future Clarendon Aquatics Center on September 17, 2019, to break ground on the $2.7 million project. “We are extremely pleased to reach this milestone after years of efforts,” City Administrator David Dockery said afterward. “We are so grateful to have these residents and students help us with the ground-breaking for this momentous occasion for the City of Clarendon.” Before the dirt was turned, Mayor Skelton recognized those in attendance and reflected on the work that had been done since an anonymous donor first offered half a million dollars to get the project started more than four years ago. Project designer Steve Shank of WatersEdge, the Kansas firm that has designed the pool, says this will be a great facility for Clarendon. 26

“This is going to be a good pool and the citizens here will love it,” Shank said. Features of the design include a Zero Depth Entry area, which is a gradually sloping entrance for easy accessibility; and a large Shallow Play Area with several attractions for younger children. Those attractions include a Toddler Slide, a Large Spray, Trio Dump Buckets, Underwater Bubblers, a Bench Under Shade. Adjacent to that play area is a Spray Ground that young children will also enjoy. The Shallow Play Area connects on one side to the larger pool area that is 65’ long and accommodates three Lap Lanes. That area also has a Basketball Goal, a Volleyball Net, a ¾-meter Diving Stand, and a Climbing Wall. The facility will also feature a lift and specially designed steps to accommodate those with disabilities.

t’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome from the City of Hedley, home of the Hedley Owls, population 312. We may be small, but we are proud!

Our Annual Chicken Barbecue dinner in September and our annual Cotton Festival in October were both canceled this year due to the pandemic, but we look forward to both of the events next year. Meanwhile, we are enjoying our Friday night six-man football season. We have an excellent public school system and athletic program. We have three active churches, and our senior citizens center serves breakfast and lunch during the week. Hedley is the home of Moffitt’s Hardware store, which has been in business for more than 102 years. If you have time, it’s worth stopping in to see. We have recently started “Project Clean Up Hedley.” Being a small town, we have had some vacant buildings that have needed some attention. So a group of

people – including city council members, the volunteer fire department, and several members of the community – have come together to make up the Hedley Recreational Committee. They have brought more events to the Cotton Festival last fall, and they will be looking at projects on Main Street and the local park for a new but familiar look. or more than fifty years, Lake Greenbelt has provided drinking water for area communities and served as a center of recreation for tens of thousands of local and regional anglers and water sports enthusiasts. As the single biggest ongoing tourist attraction in Donley County, Greenbelt is a major employer and contributor to the community and has built a reputation as a family friendly destination for fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor activities. The groundwork that eventually led to Lake Greenbelt was laid in 1950 when compact was signed between Donley, Armstrong, and Collingsworth county representatives. Attending that first meeting were C. B. (Cap) Morris and J. R. Porter, Ray J. Noblitt, W. Carroll Knorpp and W. S. Whaley. Although the member communities changed over time, work moved steadily forward. On April 14, 1954, a bill was introduced before the 53rd Legislature, and Gov. Allen Shivers signed the Act creating the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority. On March 29, 1966, contracts for the dam, filtration plant and pipeline were let. Construction price was $3,685,635.96, broken down into $1,795,514.06 for the dam; $624,941, filtration plant, and $1,230,180.90, pipeline. A month later, groundbreaking ceremonies were held. Two years later, Lake Greenbelt opened with a five-day celebration that began on Wednesday, May 29, 1968.

Clarendon College alumni Wyatt Casper and current CC rodeo team member Riggin Smith both appeared in RFD-TV's "The American" in AT&T Stadium in Arlington in March 2020 with Casper winning the Saddle Bronc competition and more than $600,000 in prize money.
