Fire deaths at an all-time low Fire incident figures show an improving picture for most aspects of fire safety. However, there are areas still in need of attention. What do you need to know? Data. Government figures for fire-related incidents in England in 2014/15 show a reduction in those killed and injured. Within the year there were 258 fire-related deaths: the lowest recorded to date, 6% fewer than the year before and 30% fewer than in 2004/5. The reduction in non-fatal injuries has been even more dramatic. The total number of injuries requiring hospital treatment for 2014/15 was 3,235, 55% lower than in 2004/5. Total fire incidents. Fire and rescue services (FRSs) report that they attended around 154,700 fires in England in 2014/15. The only year in which this figure was bettered was 2012/13 when wet weather significantly reduced the number of outdoor fires. Why the good news? The low figures are attributed to the success of campaigns concerning smoke alarms, fire safety visits and fire-safe cigarettes. There has also been a change in behaviour with arson becoming a much rarer occurrence.
The bad news. 44% of all incidents attended by FRSs in England were false alarms. Although false alarms have been reducing year on year they’re not diminishing as quickly as the number of actual fires. This means that they’re taking up an increasing proportion of FRS time. Warning. These statistics are used to direct FRS resources at real risks. With false alarms wasting their time and the majority caused by apparatus failures, many FRSs are now charging for attendance at repeated false alarms. Although deaths and injuries are down, the number of false fire alarms is still far too high. To avoid fire service charges, always investigate and respond effectively to prevent a recurrence.

Don’t fall over the Christmas tree According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 80,000 people will go to hospital following accidents during the Christmas break. These accidents could cause long-term health effects which impact on anyone who works for you. Tip. Ask anyone who’s had an accident to own up to the fact on their return to work, and make sure that their work won’t exacerbate any injury they may have sustained. Find out if anyone has had an accident over the Christmas break and look at work adjustments to prevent making an injury worse.

Winter Driving Tips It’s that time of year again where the sun is low in the sky, washer fluids are low and the roads become icy as the winter draws in. Here’s our top 5 tips for safer driving this winter; 1) Ensure all employees who drive on company business are reminded about checking their tyre pressures (this is the number one factor for loss of control) 2) If your driver handbook covers vehicle checks remind employees about checking windscreen washer fluid levels, anti-freeze levels, brakes, fog lights and their battery prior to setting off on long journeys over the winter. (If you’re thinking you need to update your driver handbook/policy we can help with this) 3) Reminding drivers of the importance to take essential kit on journeys through the snow if driving is essential such as a blanket, a torch, de-icer, a first aid kit and a mobile phone charger for emergencies. 4) Stress the importance of reducing journeys to a minimum in winter driving conditions. Does the trip need to be made? If the trip is essential and there is snow/ice what measures are in place to reduce any risks? 5) Provide safer driving tips through further training. Contact us now to discuss fleet driver and defensive driver training.
