Manage the situation It was already known that any telephone conversation causes a distraction to drivers, not only the act of handling a phone. Tip. Alongside a ban on hand-held mobiles whilst driving, include in your driving at work policy restrictions on the use of hands-free equipment. These rules should include keeping conversations to the bare minimum when one party is driving

Hands-free phones can be as risky as hand-held Psychologists at the University of Sussex say that drivers who talk via a handsfree phone may be just as distracted as those who use a hand-held one. What were their findings and might you need to change your policy as a result?

Research

Conclusion

The study was published in the Transportation Research journal in June 2016. It found various negative impacts on drivers’ concentration when they were engaged in telephone conversations, in particular those which sparked their visual imagination.

Researchers concluded that conversations which require visual imagination use the brain’s processing capacity more than was previously realised. This means there is less brain space available to process hazards. As the study found, drivers are at their safest when they’re not distracted at all and are least safe when distracted by conversation, especially when it’s by phone and requires visual imagination. The academics acknowledged that any conversation is a distraction but that discussions with passengers are less of an issue, one reason being that they tend to moderate the conversation in response to road hazards.

Methodology The researchers utilised video-based hazard perception testing similar to that used in the driver licence theory test. There were three groups of participants. The first control group was left without any distractions to get on with the test. The second and third groups were distracted throughout by sentences which they had to confirm as “true” or “false” . One of these groups received questions which encouraged the use of visual imagery, e.g. “a five pound note is the same size as a ten pound note” Whereas the others were asked to consider “non-visual” sentences, e.g. “leap years have 366 days”.

A spokesperson for the University said, “Conversations are more visual than we might expect, leading drivers to ignore parts of the outside world in favour of their inner “visual world” - with concerning implications for road safety.”

Distraction is bad As you might anticipate, all of the drivers who were distracted performed less well. They were slower to respond to and detected fewer hazards. Because the researchers were using eye tracking software they could identify that distracted drivers were more likely to ignore a hazard even though their eyes had focused on it. They focused on a smaller area of the road than they would have if not distracted.

The data showed that the group evaluating the visual imagery questions was the most impaired. Source: Indicator

FIRE SAFETY Q&A- do we need intumescent strips? Q. Our joiner tells us that he needs to install intumescent strips when he fits our new fire doors, and has explained that in the event of a fire these will expand and seal the door leaf into the opening. But staff are worried that this will stop them from escaping. Is he correct? A. He is right to fit these strips as they are a required element of the fire door. They are triggered by a temperature of between 110°C and 180°C depending on the product. By the time these seals are activated the fire has reached a stage where it would be fatal to be in the room which is on fire without specialist fire-fighting gear. The question of entrapment is a common concern, but it is not a problem as the room on fire would be uninhabitable at that stage in any case.

Fully Funded – Leadership & Management Coaching A ‘heads up’ for our Clients…. Nobody knows what the future holds now that Britain has opted out of the EU, but you can probably imagine that there are likely to be some forthcoming challenges for UK business owners. This is why we are making you aware of a fully funded Leadership & Management coaching programme that is designed to help eligible SME businesses to develop a growth action plan and essential new skills. The 18 hours of 1-2-1 coaching support would normally have a commercial value of around £2,000. However, it is being fully funded through the European Regional Development Fund and managed by the Manchester Growth Hub, who has appointed some key delivery partners. One of our trusted partners, experienced independent coach (Graham Stuart) is a long-standing client of Donnelly Bentley and part of the associate framework, which is able to facilitate this bespoke coaching support to eligible businesses in the GM region.

You may be able to identify a key senior person within your own business who could benefit from bespoke Leadership & Management support – if so, this could potentially be beneficial. Naturally there is expected to be a high take-up for this before funding from Europe is exhausted and Graham would be happy to arrange a short face to face meeting to explain how this could work – and how it could be leveraged.

If you wish to view Graham’s profile please visit www.imperativesolutions. co.uk or call him on 07870 222771 for more details quoting Comply at Work.
