PRODUCTIVITY

Some elements of day-to-day business life are dull, others are under siege from human error. Here are the ways you can be more productive, less prone to mistakes and keep that in-tray under control. Meetings Forget emailing back and forth, trying to pin down a time and location for that crucial facetime. The newest PA on the block is AI – ‘Amy Ingram’ is one version of this – all you have to do is cc her in to an email with the person you want to have your meeting with and ‘she’ will liaise on your behalf — before you know it, a meeting invite will ping in to your inbox. Try it at X.ai or Mimetic.ai – both have a ‘name’ and email address to give that personal, dare we say, human touch.

How will you change how you work in 2017?

To-do lists Arranging your must-dos, should-dos and might-dos is a job in itself. Add a whole team’s worth of those and managing the flow of a project has nightmare written all over it. AI apps help individuals and teams organise their work to bring clarity to mind and action. With tasks, projects, conversations and dashboards, Asana enables teams to move work around. Trello keeps track of everything, from the big picture to the minute details. Wunderlist is a simple to-do list and task manager app that helps you get stuff done. No excuses now….. Travel Lola is a new kind of travel company that provides an on-demand, personal travel service through a smartphone app. The Lola app instantly connects people to

a team of travel consultants who find hotels, research business requirements, book flights and anything else their customers need. So if you want to fly in to NYC, find a hotel (Do you prefer a city view? No problem),

arrange a couple of meetings nearby, find a place to eat with your vegan client, and leave early via Dublin, that’s not a problem. Collaboration As companies grow and more people get on board, organising everyone can become a project in itself. AI collaboration apps are making a huge impact in this area. Basecamp is a unique collection of tools and methods for working together, all baked into a single organised product. No more email, far fewer meetings, and a much better handle on things. Slack brings all your communication together in one place. It’s real-time messaging, archiving and search for modern teams. Yammer enables connections to people and information (files, photos, videos) from across an organisation, making it easier to move your work forward. Reports Are you spending too much time on manual tasks, like writing operational reports, interpreting dashboards or producing regulatory reports? Quill takes a specific set of data and weaves it into a written document. This makes generating earnings reports, for example, a nearly automatic process. And the app is so smart humans cannot distinguish its writing from that of a person. Also try Aria.com, which applies software to data and explains what it means, in language that people understand. Their patented AI Natural Language Generation technology goes beyond simple templates, extracting and communicating the insights hidden in your data. ●

MEMBER STRAPLINE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

PAUL ROSENFELD CO-FOUNDER PEN Partnership

T he perf ect con su l ta n c y sol u ti o n Tell us about your company. We set up our management consultancy, Pen Partnership, four years ago to create a nimble business with a fresh take on providing expert advice. The Pen partners had worked together for the best part of 20 years; we were determined to move away from the traditional consultancy model to create a different service, with passionate experts obsessed about obtaining the right outcomes for our clients — where we could be judged by our results. Our core business is a consultancy focused on Financial Services, where we work with clients to help them find and deliver solutions to complex problems and to drive sustainable and effective change. Recently we have set up a Customer Experience business, which specialises in enabling organisations to achieve sustainable growth through delivering the best possible customer experiences. We plan to help kick-start more businesses and are always looking for great investment opportunities, with like-minded entrepreneurs, that need a combination of capital but also business know-how and management input to drive success. What has been your biggest success so far? The business has had a number of pivotal events, but our greatest success has to be building a high-class team. We have an internal mantra that our people have to be ‘The Perfect Fit’ for us and our clients. We take this very

seriously and it drives not only recruitment but also the culture of our business. What project are you most excited about right now? We have a commitment to put 1% of our revenue aside for charity projects which we believe will make a significant difference to those around us. That now amounts to £120k a year. One project that particularly excites me is a possible apprentice programme for school leavers and disaffected young people. How has being a member of The Clubhouse contributed to the success of your business? When we started using The Clubhouse we were still in start-up mode. We intended to buy our own office but couldn’t find anything that would work as well. The nature of our business means that we work at our clients’ offices so most of the time we don’t need much space. The Clubhouse allows us to work in a high-end professional environment that can impress clients and gives us the flexibility we need. From the start it made us feel that we were punching above our weight. Now it feels like home, the whole team loves working here. Where can members find you? Pen has a number of dedicated desks at The Clubhouse on the lower ground floor of 8 St James Square. ● penpartnership.com

QUICK-FIRE ROUND

Favourite place to go in London? St James’s Church ‘secret’ garden on Jermyn Street for a summer lunch break, or the RA friends café in winter. Who inspires you and why? Anyone who has successfully built their own businesses – particularly those who weren’t successful first time. I am still in awe when I meet those with the stamina, dedication and unwavering commitment to make it work. Best bit of advice you’ve been given? A good business deal is only one that works for both parties — if it’s too good a deal for one side, it’s not a good deal. If you were on a desert island, what would you bring? My Amazon Prime card – I’m confident they would continue to find a way to deliver to me, wherever I am in the world. Which super power would you like to have? Not needing sleep – there’s just too much I still want to do and not enough time. What is the worst business ‘faux-pas’ you’ve committed? Priced an annual service way too low at the launch of a new business, which caused a lot of unnecessary growth constraints.

EDITION COPENHAGEN

THE LONDON LIBRARY

CHUTNEY MARY

This month our art partner, Broadbent Gallery, presents an exciting opportunity to view lithographs created at Edition Copenhagen, one of the leading workshops in the world. Known as a unique haven for international contemporary artists to create works, Edition Copenhagen will be bringing editioned pieces straight from the presses by well-known names such as Antony Gormley and Jake and Dinos Chapman.

Founded in 1841 on St James’s Square, this is the UK’s leading literary institution. With more than one million books and periodicals in over 50 languages, the collection includes works from the 16th century to the latest publications. With over 17 miles of books, the library is embarking on a huge renovation project, the first part of which was completed in 2013, actively embracing digital readers. Membership is open to everyone.

Having recently relocated from Chelsea to St James’s, Chutney Mary reinvented the concept of contemporary Indian dining back in 1990. Inside the decor is sumptuous, luxurious and comfortable, and the food is top-notch to match. Subtly spiced kid biryani, crispy light pastry on a venison samosa, sautéed Cornish crab in chilli butter… We could go on, but why don’t you just find out for yourself?
