Management versus Leadership This, of course, cannot be every word that needs to be said on this subject. Given the 1,000’s of books on the topic, we must be satisfied with some of the more macro views. And this list is to provide a starting point for your own journey of discovery about what a leader brings. Remember, this is a leadership program.

You are ‘managing’ people when...

You are ‘leading’ people when...

Use of KPI’s to manage performance

Inspire others to lift their performance

Use of performance management to help someone

Help them realise they can do it because of their own abilities

You correct unwanted behaviour

You catch people doing things right and tell them

Notice people doing what needs to be done

Notice people going the extra mile because it’s fun and they can

There’s overwhelm

There’s playfulness and possibilities

Momentum is dropping or gone

There’s a ‘buzz’ about the place

No improvement in results or results go backwards

Improve results through innovations, ideas, brainstorming, exploring...

Things are in ‘status quo’ mode

Things are in playful chaos as they’re improved

You solve a problem

You point to a new possibility because of the problem and use it as an opportunity to grow and learn for everyone

Value reporting for reporting sake – because it’s a task to be done

Take a report and extrapolate possible improvements

Accept the way things are and/or improve the current situation

Assume everything is up for renovation and overhaul all the time

Encourage stability in performance

Encourage and expect outrageously great performance

The talk is about the KPI’s

The talk is about their greatness and their potential

Work on something only when it’s a problem

Anticipate problems and look for opportunities to improve things

People are managed to ‘cope’

People soar and are championed to achieve greatness

Defending the way it is

Fighting for improvements no matter what – even when it rocks there’s always more

Need direction

Set the direction with passion, certainty &

Manages day to day as it happens

Everything done in terms of strategic future

Deals with day

Day is planned in terms of medium and long term goals

Everyone knows what they’re doing

Everyone knows why they’re doing it and how it fits in with the bigger vision

Talks KPI’s

Talks values and standards of excellence within each person
