Birthday Celebrations at FACT To celebrate turning ten this year, FACT reveals its programme launch for 2013
he Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, based on Wood Street in Liverpool’s bohemian Ropewalks area, has been a cornerstone within our city for ten years. Known for showcasing film, art, exhibitions and special events, FACT has held fourtyseven exhibitions since its inception, including major works commisioned for Liverpool’s Biennial.

To celebrate turning ten this year FACT have compiled an exciting programme of events for the next twelve months. Below are just a few of the highlights you can expect.
The Art of Pop Video 14 March – 26 May This exhibition celebrates the music video in all its forms and invites visitors to discover its filmic predecessors, offering a sneaky glimpse of the future. The exhibition features over sixty music videos by artists and directors including Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham, Christian Jankowski and Anton Corbijn. A film programme has also been curated in conjunction with TATE, containing both experimental and pop culture film. FACT have also collaborated with Sound City to launch an open call for budding film makers to create a music video for Liverpool band Outfit, which will be included in the exhibition.
Turning FACT Inside Out 13 June – 25 August This exhibition looks back at the past ten years of FACT, reflecting on the transformation of artistic practices and the changing dynamics between audience and gallery space. The public programme focuses on how FACT might develop in the current and future economic and digital landscape and the concept of cultural-led regeneration.
Hacky Birthday 23 February To celebrate ten years since the FACT building opened, they are inviting people to hack or creatively re-programme the building in a family fun day. Activities include traditional party games with a technological twist, a DJ set from Liverpool music legends, Clinic, a performance by a group of pupils from Holy Cross Catholic Primary School (who have worked with artist Ross Dalziel to compose and play a piece of music using their Nintendo DS’s), and a special birthday cake designed by children who have been inspired by their experiences in the building. Jake Bugg Joanne Mottram chats with Jake Bugg, the singer-songwriter that is being hailed as ‘the antidote’ to plastic pop

n less than a year, Jake Bugg has watched as his debut album hit the top spot, toured America and is about to embark upon his biggest UK tour to date – all before he reaches his 19th birthday. This whirl wind of success is usually something that only reality TV stars get to experience, but Jake is far from a manufactured pop prince. In his own words, its his job “to keep that X Factor sh*t off the top of the charts”, and he’s managed to do just that, piping Leona Lewis to the post for number one album in October last year with his self-titled debut record.

It’s that same, somewhat familiar tale of a working class hero using music as a tool to propel himself into the industry, escaping a life of roaming
around a council estate. In Jake’s case, the area in question happens to be the Clifton area of Nottingham, one of the largest housing estates in Europe. Swapping a football for a guitar at the age of 12, Jake was taught to play by his uncle, and started writing songs by the time he reached 14. Citing Donovan, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and Don McLean as his main influences, Bugg dropped out of his music technology course at 16 and began playing local gigs. On a whim, he uploaded some of his stuff to BBC Introducing (a programme that supports unsigned musicians), and the rest, as they say, is history. He was asked to play the Introducing Stage at the Glastonbury Festival and from there secured a contract with Mercury Records,

releasing his first single, Lightening Bolt and a number one album not long after. He has achieved in a year more than most artists manage in a whole career, with his mix of melancholic folk music and bluesy rock, awash with rasping melodies, Dylan-esque musings and autobiographical lyrics that resonate with his ever growing fan base. Add in a tour with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, followed by his own UK tour beginning this month, it’s a wonder that Jake had any time to fit in an interview for The Collective. Luckily for us, he did, and I couldn’t wait to find out more about his whirl-wind past year and what was next for this rising star.
That’s not the answer you’re looking for, but it’s true. The fact that so many people have liked it so quickly is the strange thing, but I can only put that down to those who started following me, liked what they heard, and told other people.
You have always said you wanted to play in the States, how did the reality differ from your dreams of it? It’s been a bit of a mad year to be honest. I did always hope I’d get the chance to play there, so just to do that was enough. But when you get there, you realise that people are actually wanting to come along to your shows and enjoy the songs. If you think about such a dramatic rise to success too much it would probably distract you actually, so you have to keep thinking about the next thing - the next song you’re going to write, how you’re going to move forward. It has been a brilliant year though - I can’t believe it’s happened. But it has, so you’ve got to live it rather than analyse it, I guess.
Did you receive any advice from Noel Gallagher when you went on tour with him? I learnt a lot from him about playing in front of big audiences - you see how life on the road works. He was a nice guy.
You talked recently about how making a number one album means you’ve actually achieved everything you wanted to. How difficult is that to deal with as an 18 year-old? Not that hard! When I was growing up this is what I wanted to do, and when you’re sitting in your bedroom as a teenager working out songs and practicing constantly, you dream of success all the time. This sounds odd, but when success actually happens, you’ve had it in your head for so many years that it doesn’t actually feel too weird. I don’t really know anything else, this is what I do, and it’s great that the music is connecting with people and that in some sense they can relate to it. Why has your music connected with so many people? I just write the tunes and if people enjoy them, that’s brilliant!
How do you look back on making your first record? It feels like it marks a specific time in my life. I’ll never forget the time leading up to the release because it did feel like I’d been working towards it since I was about 12. It was just incredibly exciting but in a weird way, quite natural.
Will you play any new songs on the tour? Well, it depends. Maybe, if I can learn the lyrics in time! Are you working towards new material already? Well, I’m going to be on tour for quite a long time. Writing songs is what I love best, and when I feel like I’ve got enough new ones together then we’ll record it. I’m not worried about it at all. It’s never difficult to find new inspiration. For me, I’d never been out of England before recording this album, but now I’ve seen different parts of the world, how different people live their lives and I’m looking forward to writing about it.You get little insights don’t you - little snippets of conversations in the street that feed into songs. It definitely won’t be an album about dressing rooms and airports! People want to hear a story - a great melody won’t connect if it has rubbish lyrics over it. It’s about being honest. lam is a visually flamboyant pop style that burst on to the scene in Britain between 1971 and 1975. The exhilarant, futuristic sounds, extreme fashion trends and glittering personalities that emerged during this era can trace their roots back to British art schools - for which Britain had more per capita than any other nation at the time. Unaffected by traditional class boundaries, they were a nurturing place for creativity.

Glam ruled record shops and art galleries, and despite being taken over by Punk, it still resonates today. With this in mind, the Glam era is set to be critically evaluated for the first time in an exciting new exhibition at Tate Liverpool, from 8th February to 12th May. Curated by Darren Pih, the exhibition moves beyond mere nostalgia for the era and uses the style as a prism to explore artistic developments in Europe and North America, bringing together over one hundred works by artists including Richard Hamilton, Sigmar Polke and Cindy Sherman. The exhibition re-defines art and performance in the 70s, exploring the migration of fine art ideas to the forefront of popular culture. The exhibition marries a combination of art, music and fashion, presenting key works such as David Hockney’s iconic painting Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy (1971). Also presented will be Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s Celebration? Realife (1972); a spectacular glitter strewn installation of mirrorballs, candles, flowers and the music of David Bowie. Glam! The Performance of Style will also examine glam culture in New York during the period, tracing the evolution of camp and androgyny and considering the infamous Andy Warhol as a key figure of the movement. Furthermore, eroticism and artifice will be explored, considering the use of materials which lend works a synthetic or trashy quality (think feathers, fur, vinyl and glitter), by artists such as Allan Jones. Combining historical and thematic elements, the exhibition will offer a refreshing new perspective on 1970s art and visual culture, underlining its continuing influence upon the contemporary imagination. The presentation will be augmented by a rich selection of contextual documents, photographs, and ephemera from the era.

Courtney Pine As the Liverpool International Jazz Festival draws ever closer, Joanne Mottram chats to British jazz legend, Courtney Pine
I have since played on the main stage at Glastonbury twice. I have played in places where you are not supposed to see jazz
n the short time since its opening in 2010, The Capstone Theatre has established itself as Liverpool’s leading venue for cutting edge jazz and world music. This year, it is due to play host to a new International Jazz Festival running from the 28th February to 3rd March 2013. For four whole days, The Capstone plays host to a plethora of original and innovative instrumental sounds, from an array of high profile artists.

The Festival culminates with a final concert by jazz legend Courtney Pine, who returns to The Capstone with his phenomenal House of Legends Tour. An inspirational icon to many young, aspiring musicians, Courtney is known extensively for his saxophone and clarinet mastery. Awarded an OBE in 2000 and a CBE in 2009, the jazz maestro launched The Capstone’s jazz programme back in 2010 with a sell-out performance and this concert promises to be something very special. I was lucky enough to catch Courtney for a quick chat ahead of his Liverpool performance and discover more about this talented musician. “It was the unique, individual sound of jazz. It wasn’t popular, but musicians were still doing it. It meant they had so much freedom with their music”, Courtney explained when I asked what it was about this particular genre that first captured his attention. “Growing up I liked everyone from Roy Wood in Wizard to Mott the Hoople. My parents are from Jamaica and the first sound I remember hearing was ska. I didn’t realise till later that they were jazz musicians.” “I played the recorder when I was nine and then in secondary school I started playing clarinet and saxophone, so I was trained in classical music. I left school at sixteen to be in a reggae band. Seeing real live musicians inspired me. I decided that I should really have a go
at this. My big sister got me involved in this reggae band and by the age of sixteen I was touring all over Europe”. Courtney’s hard work over the following years paid off and his debut album, Journey to the Urge Within, released in 1987, was the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40, notching up sales to qualify for a silver disc. It was a remarkable achievement in British jazz history and established Courtney Pine as the leading figure on the British jazz scene and an inspiration to many young black musicians. In 1988, Pine cemented his success with the acclaimed, Destiny’s Song, produced by Delfeayo Marsalis. Again making its way into the British Top 40, the album burst into the American jazz charts, establishing the start of his international reputation. “My most magical moment was playing Wembley Stadium for the Free Nelson Mandela Concert”, Courtney remembers. “At that time people said you couldn’t play jazz to a large audience, but I was playing it to a world wide audience. I have since played on the main stage at Glastonbury twice. I have played in places where you are not supposed to see jazz”. Jazz is a genre of music I have never known too much about, so I was fascinated to hear from Courtney that it originates from the brothels of New Orleans, who hired pianists to create a seductive ambiance. The Madame of the house realised that the faster the pianist played, the quicker the punters would finish, and therefore they would earn more money in a night. The pianists began to change and extend their tunes, making their own variations. “This is how functional jazz was and over the years it’s developed into being a part of club culture, telling the truth to society, reflecting society”, Courtney says.“Jazz has always been there as this

language for everybody who realises that this music is inspirational, it makes you think about other things. That’s why it doesn’t die out like a fad; it changes as our society changes”. Courtney is set to perform tracks from his new album House of Legends at The Capstone, which draws on the varied styles of Caribbean music - identifying them with historical events, figures and places. He opens the album with a soprano-sax ballad in memory of Stephen Lawrence and there are also tributes to executed rebel slave Samuel Sharpe and to Nelson Mandela. “It’s an album I have been working on for a long time and its all Caribbean based”, Courtney explains. “Usually jazz musicians would add Caribbean music as a side dish, a slight flavour to their set or album - maybe incuding just one track with a calypso beat or slight reggae influence. I decided after so many years to do a whole album. It
was a bold step to do a whole album of Caribbean based music, especially as I know how the jazz fraternity in the UK feel about Caribbean influence on jazz: they don’t like it. We got to working on the record and I couldn’t stop dancing to every single track. It’s the Jazzwise Album of the Year. It’s the album I thought everyone would really hate but they really like”. So is Courtney looking forward to playing in Liverpool once again? “This is my second time at The Capstone, we were the guinea pigs who played the second show there a few years ago. It is owned by musicians and I have nothing but good things to say about the space. I’m so happy to take this project there. I am a Liverpool supporter, Liverpool is my flavour. There are some wonderful players up there. It’s really hard because everything is all about London and the South. People need to know what’s happening up North”. Before our time together ended I had

to ask Courtney what advice he could give to budding musicians hoping to follow in his footsteps? “Get to as many concerts as possible”, he wisely says. “It’s so important to see live music. A record doesn’t reveal the true sound of an artist. Jazz music isn’t about playing something that was from before, it’s about the moment. To me, it’s the ultimate form of musical expression that we have. It may not be the most popular music in the world and some people find it hard to get into because it has such a huge legacy but the rewards can be huge. The limits of jazz, are the limits of your imagination” Liverpool’s newest music event, the Liverpool International Jazz Festival, is set to become an annual event with the Capstone Theatre at its very heart. We chat to the North West DJ who is currently developing young artists at Liverpool’s Mode Training
J Olabean is one of the most innovative and creative DJ’s to emerge from Liverpool. His talents have taken him from DJing and promoting club events, to music production and artist management. He has also hosted Liverpools Sony award wining premier Black Music show on Juice FM, Topnotch.

“I started off as a bedroom DJ”, says Ola. “I was doing a lot of mixes and bit of production from home. Then I met a guy called DJ Kolfi, who introduced me to DJ Mixing Championships, and convinced me to enter. I won the North West and Regional heats, then went on to the UK championships and became runner up to the UK champion. I realised it was something I really wanted to do, so kept entering competitions and from there was getting bookings in the UK and Europe”. Ola went on to make a name for himself in the
music industry as top RnB/ Hip Hop producer and song writer, with production credits for the likes of Destinys Child, Mariah Carey, Ashanti, Ja Rule and Atomic Kitten. Olabean is currently working and developing new artists, giving young people a start in the music industry through Mode Training in Liverpool. Mode provides apprenticeships and industry recognised training for students, businesses and schools, in subjects such as barbering and hairdressing, performance skills, management and customer services. Currently, Ola and his students are busy working towards the student event of the year, when Training Plus Merseyside joins forces with Mode for a hair show on the 19th of March at The Dome Grand Central Hall. Mode students who are currently studying performance skills and music technology will use the show as an
opportunity to demonstrate their musical brillince. Mode hairdressing and barbering students will also be creating a spectacular coiffure, with themes based upon Pirouette, Moulin Rouge, Burlesque and Cirque. “When I found out more about the college it got me thinking that this is something I would like to put more of my time into - developing young people that have talent and taking it to the next level”, explains Ola. “I plan to develop a mini record label with artists, producers, singers, writers and engineers all trained up in house and learning the whole process of producing and releasing something. I love meeting new people I can relate to. I come from the same place as all these young people. Collective Prediction– Joe Murtagh This issue The Collective uncovers the Liverpool based illustrator whose collections are a mix of danger and vibrancy contemporary and eclectic mix of digital and traditional media, Liverpool illustrator, Joe Murtagh’s, boasts collections that are both striking and original, with strong influences from music, fashion and pop culture.

The artist uses strong colour to enhance his subjects and enjoys experimenting with digital software to produce eye-catching images. The outcome is a unique collection of images that purposefully avoid reproducing any similarities with his contemporaries. After spending some time teaching fine art, Joe returned to his first love - graphic design and illustration. He only creates images that excite him and uses his training as a fine artist to his advantage, with composition and colour balance of the utmost importance. Previously a figurative painter and sculptor, his work is still very much based on the human form and portraiture.

In light of his work, Death Chic, which explores themes such as blood diamonds, subconscious emotions, celebrity and the violence of the media, we caught up with this talented artist to discuss his latest projects and future plans.

So, tell us about your creative background: were you interested in art from a young age? Yes. I used to watch cartoons with my Dad at a very young age and to impress him I used to draw the cartoon characters. He liked them and so did other family members. I got a buzz from their approval. From that moment I was hooked. When I was older, I enrolled upon an Art Foundation Course, always thinking that I would end up creating album and book covers, however, it was a Fine Art Module that encouraged me to explore my capabilities. Embarking on a Fine Art Degree, I concentrated on becoming a sculptor (stone carving and metal welding). Since graduating I have taught art at school and college levels. How did you become an illustrator? I think I’m an illustrative fine artist at heart, my first love is drawing. However, I’ve had many jobs in the art and design field: art teacher, fine art tutor, web designer, photo re-toucher and most recently, graphic designer. What influences your work? Everything I see and hear; every day life, people going about their business within the structure of society. I also love music
and fashion and am influenced by the fantasy element of them both. I used to buy Vogue magazine for inspiration, just looking at the adverts and photo shoots. What is your creative process in building imagery? I collect images that catch my eye. I used to have such a huge collection of magazine clippings and pages that I’d cut out and make collages with. Almost like doodling really, anything that looked good together. Now my artwork is very much about me looking at what’s going on around me, what’s in the media and how our lives are affected by outside forces. I use Adobe Illustrator and enjoy blending lots of layers together to build up a radiance of colour. Is there a meaning behind the use of such bright colours in your work? I use sugar coated colour to make things look vivid and to make the audience take notice. I love how colour plays with our expectations. What is the influence behind Death Chic? Death Chic seems to work as a short hand for my creations, even though I can’t explain what genre they fall into. Modern

In my artwork the skull/skeleton represents many things: guilt, taboo, mortality, life, conscience...One of my major influences is Buddhism and its attitudes towards life and death. It made me question what it is to be alive. I realised that modern life encourages a distance between what we are and what we are expected to be. You do portraits of celebrities, who would you most like to do next? The next famous portrait I do will be Alexander McQueen. Watch this space. What has been the proudest moment of your career so far? I’ve had many special times looking back. Winning sculpture commissions, sharing ideas and inspiring young and older people as an art teacher and tutor has meant a lot to me. However, I am still full of ambition and get a buzz from learning new techniques and surprising myself. So what’s next for you? My next project is a collaboration with Matt Ford, to be shown at Matt Ford Studio - hopefully for the forthcoming Liverpool Art Month. I will also be devising a new collection of Limited Edition fine art prints to be sold exclusively at www.mattfordstudio.com along side other brand new work from several artists. Also an accomplished actress, Paloma has appeared in the 2007 remake of St Trinians, Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and numerous television shows. Not a bad career for an East London girl, whose pre-singing career included stints as a sales rep for Agent Provocateur and a magician’s assistant. Paloma is currently embarking upon her UK Tour and ahead of her Liverpool performance at The Empire Theatre this June, she found the time to catch up with The Collective. Hi Paloma! How is the tour going so far? It’s going really well, I’m enjoying myself! Sorry I’m late, our bus broke down! What is the best and worst part of touring (vehicle breakdowns aside)? (Laughs) Performing live and hearing the crowd sing my songs back to me is the best part. Missing my friends and family is the worst, but I’m getting used to that now. Are you excited to play at the Liverpool Empire Theatre in June? Very much! I’m quite excited generally about some of the smaller venues, because I think some
of the arenas are very daunting. I’ve got the best job in the world. Did you enjoy being apart of the Justice Collective collaboration? I was really happy to be asked, and so happy about its success. I’m not one to mince my words and I’m known for speaking out against our right wing government and media cover ups, so I was happy to do it. It took you five years to get your first album deal. What stopped you from giving up? I was always doing other things at the same time, I wasn’t trying to get a record deal as such, I was just doing what I liked doing. I wasn’t trying to get signed, I was just somebody who enjoyed writing songs and enjoyed singing them and so I continued to do that. The management I found two years before the record deal were more inclined towards the ‘holy grail’ of the record deal but I never thought like that. I did it because to me, there was nothing else I should be doing. How does that make you feel about talent shows, where contestants can reach fame quite quickly? For me, fame was never the end goal. Sometimes, quite often in fact, I struggle with a lot of things when it comes to fame. For me, success was the end goal, or as many people as possible hearing the music. I don’t think it’s a good idea to set fame as an ambition - I think that’s quite dangerous. I think those shows - if they are taken for what they actually are, a vocal talent contest - are fine. The problem is, people who do find success with them are not psychologically prepared for it. Because I’ve tread the boards for so long, I’m prepared for it. I know what its like to play for five people who are talking through your performance, or lots of people who are

actually listening to you. I think all that stuff ’s important.You can be an over night success in those shows but often people get dropped as quickly as they’re picked up. Not a lot is done for the psychological preparation of those people. I feel quite sorry for them. So if things hadn’t worked out for you would you not have considered auditioning? I don’t think I’ve ever been confident enough to do anything like that; I still don’t think I’m that good a singer. For me the most important thing is what I’m saying - not my ability - so I don’t think that would be something I could have done. I also wouldn’t have been able to do the creative side of it in a show like that and I’m all about the creative side. I wouldn’t get through, I know that for sure! You studied theatre directing at Central Saint Martins College, would you say this has influenced your theatrical dress sense? It’s influenced everything! I play a massive role in designing the performances that I do. I work with the lighting people, I co-design the sets, I’m the one person who ties all those elements together. Who are your biggest musical influences? Etta James, Annie Lennox, Tina

Turner, Grace Jones…powerful women basically. So have you learnt the words to I’m Every Woman yet (I am of course referring to the moment when Paloma was invited to sing with Chaka Khan on stage at the NPG Festival, but was unsure of the lyrics)? (Laughs) No, I don’t think that opportunity is going to come up again! You’re also an actress, have the movie roles started coming in yet? No, not yet, but I hope they do! What would be your dream role to play? Someone that is the opposite of me and who I am and what I look like and how I behave. Something challenging! Who is your favourite actress? Christina Ricci, I love all her movies. What advice would you give to people wanting to make it in the music or acting industry? Take compliments and insults with a pinch of salt. With fashion week fast approaching, The Collective thought it was only fitting that we dedicate this issue’s Art in Print to the Somerset House exhibition, Valentino: Master of Couture. Art and fashion are one and the same at Collective HQ which is why we chose this major exhibit that celebrates the life and work of the renowned Italian fashion designer, Valentino, showcasing his amazing creations.
Art in Print ver 130 exquisite haute couture designs worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow will be on display in this exciting installation.

Divided into three sections, visitors start with a private view of Valentino’s world through photographs from his personal archive. The exhibition then unfolds into a couture fashion show where roles are reversed and visitors are invited onto the catwalk to view a

Creative Stylist and owner of Hooka salons reveals his top tips on gents hair trends for this season e’ve been so busy in the salons lately with both ladies and gents wanting to look their best over the holiday season. I can’t believe how many of our female clients are going for the dip dye effect, that trend is massive and shows no sign of fading away just yet. Anyway, enough about the ladies. New Year means new you and lots of our male clients are ready for a change. I’ve been conducting tons of research and getting inspired by what’s been happening on the catwalks for men this Spring/Summer 2013. I was lucky enough to spend a week in New York recently, which gave me a chance to see how the gents of the Big Apple are styled and groomed. Men’s hair trends have been quite similar for a while now and there’s no sign of hairstyles changing too dramatically for this season either. What we will be seeing is a more versatile way for men to style their hair. Styles will still be kept quite clean and tidy around the edges and I predict we will see more prominent side partings this season. Hair in general is going to
be kept longer within the haircut to create a changeable style. To create a more formal look, the hair will be pushed or slicked back by using strong gels and pomade, resulting in a high shine glossy finish, or the hair will be blow dried with a sea salt spray to create volume and texture. This will help support the style as it’s styled in a controlled quiff with a medium shine product like American Crew Molding Clay. The advantage of having more length is that you can adapt your hairstyle to suit the occasion. The choice of products for men is bigger than ever. A product which has been selling by the truckload at Hooka is Super Dust by L’oreal which is a volumising powder. This gets sprinkled onto the hair and scalp and creates loads of texture and hold within the hair. Lip Plumping and Shaping Lip plumping and shaping is achieved by injecting filler along the lip margin (vermillion border) and into the body of the lip until the desired shape and lip volume is attained. There are a variety of injection techniques that can be used, for example we can run filler behind the lips to enhance pout. Your lips will be entirely numbed first so you can rest assured that the procedure will be totally painless. Lips may be initially swollen or possibly bruised but this should subside within 48 hours. Your new pout lasts for six months (less if you smoke) but subsequent treatments may last for nine months to one year. We can also improve the appearance of gummy smiles using small quantities of botulinum toxin in the top lip. This will also help lip lines, although filling the lines is usually preferable.
Treatments take about 10 – 20 minutes and are usually painless. No recovery time is needed and you should begin to see an improvement within 3 – 4 days and the results usually last up to 4 months. Treatment with Botulim Toxin will not dramatically change your facial appearance or make you look totally expressionless. The muscle activity that causes the forehead frown lines is simply reduced, so you will still be able to frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.
Dermal Fillers For deeper folds and facial contouring we use Radiesse or Ellanse. These are a longer lasting filler (approx 18 months) and are ideal for such areas as nasolabial folds (nose to corner of mouth) and marionette lines (corner of mouth to chin). They can also be used to sculpt your cheekbones to give you a more defined look, or for virtual face lifts and non-surgical nose jobs. For virtual face lifts Radiesse or Ellanse is used in volume areas along the jaw line in association with botox to give the effect of a lift. For a non-surgical nose job it can be used to even out an uneven bump, make an unsymmetrical nose look straighter or to lift the tip. This eventually led to an interest in super foods, supplements and the health benefits of juicing. I started juice detoxing a while ago and a few friends and family asked me to help them do it. They told a few of their friends, a few celebrities tried it out and the rest, as they say, is history. How does the detox work and what are its benefits? Without getting too technical, the main benefit of detoxing is being able to give your body a break and rebalance yourself. Detoxing has a cleansing effect on your cells which helps keep your body working efficiently and effectively. Our body naturally detoxes, though many people overindulge with sugar, fatty foods and alcohol and this, combined with the fact that we are exposed to so many levels of toxins in our daily environment, means that our body can sometimes struggle to keep up. Our liver can become strained and the natural bacteria in our gut can become upset. As a result we experience symptoms such as lack of energy, fatigue, sluggishness, bloating, headaches and stress. Detoxing is a way of giving our body a break from this tiring work and allowing a good clear out of these toxins. The result is that you feel refreshed, rejuvenated and amazing. How is this different to other detox courses? I think the biggest difference is that we are offering a service and full supervision. We are not just boxing up juices and sending them out, we take time to get to know our clients whether its through consultations or simply when one of our team are dropping off our freshly juiced bottles. We want to know each and every client, when they are happy and feeling the amazing results. The OMG team are a happy bunch! What ingredients do the juices include? We combine a blend of fresh fruit and vegetables that

are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes which are key to restoring and cleansing your system. This includes lemons, celery, beetroot and super berries such as blueberries and raspberries. Apart from the juices, what else can be consumed during your detox course? In order for the drinks to work their magic, we advise the customer to consume only the juices, water and hot water and lemon. Some herbal teas are fine too. The key to detox is flushing the cells, so drinking as much water as possible is imperative. What results can be expected after the three days? The biggest change people experience is an increase in energy, lack of cravings, and a general feeling of being lighter and brighter. People are revitalised, replenished and feel amazing. Clients also report clearer skin, brighter eyes, shiny hair and most lose weight and inches which is fantastic, as it gives a real confidence and mood boost. Do you plan to expand outside of the Liverpool area? Yes, we are carrying out a massive marketing and recruitment plan, building distribution points which will allow us to continue to create new products and create additional employment opportunities across the country. Very soon in Liverpool we will reach full capacity, so in order to keep up with demand we’re forging ahead with expansion plans. The Living Room he Collective’s mission for issue three was to discover the perfect venues for a romantic Valentine’s dinner, and it should come as no surprise that our quest brought us to The Living Room. Located on Victoria Street, the newly refurbished Living Room has a reputation for fantastic cocktails, high quality food, friendly service and a great atmosphere. Everyone’s generic ‘living room’, over the years it has become an old friend to the people of Liverpool, never losing its appeal. It’s the place for working professionals to unwind of a weekday evening, yet still the only place to be (and be seen) on a Saturday night.

The menu features dishes with a host of world influences and includes a range of options from light, lunch time salads and sandwiches, to full course a la carte dining. The extensive wine and cocktail list features signature cocktails, premium wines and Laurent Perrier Champagnes that compliment the food perfectly.Visitors can also enjoy the soothing sound of the resident pianist on the legendary baby grand – the perfect accompaniment for a cocktail or two. Housed downstairs is the upbeat and stylish cocktail bar Mosquito and the Vampire Suite, a premier private members bar. My friend and I enjoyed an amazing apple and cranberry mojito at our table whilst we took a look at the menu. Although somewhat of a regular at The Living Room, I never fail to be impressed by the stylish décor and comfortable surroundings. Spacious and full of light, its requisite polished wood floors and candlelit tables ooze sophistication and class. There is plenty on the menu to catch my eye, especially the bread and nibbles section which contains delicious options to share with friends. The tapas board and Moroccan spiced houmous are two choices that I would normally be tempted by, but instead I went for the pan-fried garlic and herb mushrooms on toast. flavour to the mushrooms and I enjoyed every bite. My friend chose the roasted red pepper and tomato risotto, a vegetarian option that came with herb and garlic mascarpone and looked delicious. Although initially swayed by the Moroccan spiced lamb, I couldn’t refuse my old favourite, steak and chips. The 7oz fillet steak came with slow roasted tomatoes, rocket and chips and was cooked to perfection – medium rare, just how I like it. Across the table, my friend’s pan-fried sea bass with orange scented broccoli and lentil casserole looked amazing, and tasted even better when she let me sneak a bite. Although full to bursting at this point, greed took over and we managed to share the chocolate truffle cake with vanilla ice cream and crushed honey comb, which was sinfully rich and flavoursome. For Valentine’s Day this year, not only is The Living Room offering a three course a la carte meal for just £35 per person, plus live music from pianist and vocalist Emily Jackson, but they are also running an exciting competition. This is a room for the elitist of cliental and trudging back to my own room; I could not help but feel jealous. However, the prospect of dinner was enough to lift my spirits. The Lowry places a heavy focus on delivering great food, in a great atmosphere. Renowned designers, Olga Polizzi and David Collins, are the creative force behind The River Bar and Restaurant, combining contemporary and classical design in a stunning, light filled oasis. The award-winning culinary team offer classic British dishes, using the finest local stock and seasonal ingredients – peppered with five-star flair. An impressive menu including duck breast, lobster tail and the traditional Lowry fish and chips would be enough to whet anyone’s appetite and I was far from disappointed with my choice - a tender loin of lamb, with fondant potatoes, spinach puree and delicious mint jus. There is something about Meryanne…
Parisian lawyer with a passion for design and architecture, Meryanne Loum-Martin is one very clever woman. Stimulated by the colours, shapes and grace of Islamic design, Meryanne’s first project was to design a home for her mother in the Marrakech Palm grove. Falling in love with the city, which awakened and inspired a creativity she had only suspected existed, Meryanne made the bold decision not only to move to the country, but to begin a new career. Looking out across the nine landscaped acres that surround the Jnane Tamsna resort, I thank God that she did.

Designing both its architecture and interiors, Meryanne opened the doors of her very first boutique hotel in 2001 and the Jnane Tamsna was born. An elegant offering of architecture, hospitality and tranquillity, the resort resonates with Meryanne’s passion for Marrakech - infecting even the most sceptical of guests. After years of extensive personal research to uncover the very best of Marrakech, designer and hotelier, Meryanne Loum-Martin, began the craze for transforming run down riad’s into contemporary boutique hotels The gardens surrounding the estate are truly spectacular, the creation of Meryanne’s husband, Gary Martin. Martin’s apparently traditional attitudes towards landscaping seem a million miles away from the conventional suburban garden. Standing in a natural paradise of olive groves, lemon trees and ornamental flower beds, there is no place I would rather be. However, for those looking for a little more than relaxation, the five swimming pools and clay tennis court are enough to wear you out. Cuisine is the highlight of this resort and all ingredients are fresh, organic and sourced from the Jnane gardens – a nice touch (and a tasty one!). Dishes are Moroccan specialities with the classic Meryanne twist, combining North African cuisine with the lightness of contemporary Mediterranean cookery. Opting to partake in an authentic Moroccan cookery lesson with house chef, Bahija, is an experience I would highly recommend. Eating a traditional lamb tagine whilst basking in the tranquillity of the pool side restaurant, admiring your own culinary prowess (I practically cooked it myself...), is a feeling that stays with you long after the flight home. Meryanne Loum – Martin clearly has the Midas touch and remains at the heart of Jnane Tamsna. Falling in love with her is as easy as falling in love with her resort. AnaYela uilding brimming with character, AnaYela’s 2007 renovation was careful to retain every last detail of its original Moroccan history. Using only traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, one-hundred artisans completed the restoration completely by hand; without the help of a single electrical tool. Impressed? You should be. Owner, Bernd Kolb, and his designer,Yannick Hervy, where similarly involved: designing and creating every piece of furniture and ornamentation within the building – an artistic haven. However, it is the tale of sixteen-year old girl,Yela, that truly generates the hotels magical atmosphere.

During the renovation, a secret room was uncovered, occupied by an intimate journal, completed in authentic Arabic calligraphy. Written the night before her wedding, this captivating teenager recounts the story of how she met her true love: looking out at the city one night from a roof terrace, sitting uncomfortably on an old carpet. Climbing up to kiss her, the carpet beneath them came to life and flew them across the city of Marrakech.

The romantic spot were Yela met her lover, it is rumoured that those who know the magic words can too fly over the roofs of the Red City – a beautiful thought whilst standing under the stars. Sadly, I did not experience a flying carpet ride but I was not disappointed for long. Opting for a tradition hammam massage (which promises to relax muscles and release purifying toxins), and a body exfoliation (performed with a deliciously scented black- soap scrub), I felt revitalised, rejuvenated and ready for my complimentary glass of champagne and another evening at the pool. ‘The pool’, resides quietly within the tranquil gardens of the hotel, changing colour each evening to create an atmosphere that cannot be replicated – the perfect end to a day of hard-core pampering. Kamer 01 msterdam continues to be one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations and it’s not difficult to see why. The city is beautiful, the locals are friendly and most importantly, there is plenty to see and do. The coffee shops and red light district are just one addition to a city steeped in culture; whether it’s the arts you’re into, or shopping and partying – as the old cliché goesthere really is something for everyone.

Staying in TripAdvisor’s number one bed and breakfast botique, Kamer 01, it was easy to see its appeal. Literally meaning, ‘Room 1’, the hotel is situated on the bend of the Singel Canal, with the building dating back to 1585. Despite many renovations over the years, there are still noticeably original features, including spiral staircases and wooden ceiling beams. This intimate bed and breakfast boasts two guest rooms: the second floor Red Room and the Blue Room a level above, nestling in the intimate attic of the building. Opting for the Red Room, I discovered the comfiest king-sized bed I’ve ever slept in; marble bathroom with rain fall shower and L’occitane toiletries; sitting area with large, flat screen TV; and my very own, Apple Mac - just in case the city attractions failed to entertain. Receiving a warm welcome from hosts, Peter and Wolter, who showed us around the fabulous surroundings with an evident enthusiasm for the hotel, Peter encouraged us to help ourselves to drinks and snacks from the kitchen at any time – a nice touch. Once settled into the Red Room, with its beautiful
Geniene Reese uncovers this boutique bed & breakfast in the heart of Amsterdam views of the canal, I was tempted to forgo plans to explore the city and instead relax by the window and watch the fabulous sunset. However, thrown into the first night, we were whisked off to Superclub: one of Amsterdam’s most exclusive clubs. Both an unusual dining experience and a lively night club, every night is different here, as DJs and performers entertain you whilst you feast in the spacious white warehouse with beds lining the walls. An interesting venue; I would defiantly recommend a visit. Needless to say, the morning after we did not attend breakfast. We headed out to eat instead and explored the markets, museums, coffee shops and the infamous red light district. An early night was the order of the day, as we were determined not to miss the breakfast on our final morning. We knew from the menu that breakfast was to be five courses, which sounded pretty spectacular – and it did not disappoint. Kamer 01 serves only organic products from farmers and producers close to Amsterdam. Eating the finest gourmet food, whilst enjoying panoramic views of the Singel Canal, was certainly worth waking up early for. With its unrivalled hospitality, intimate feel and great location, I would highly recommend the Kamer 01 for an enjoyable stay in the city of Amsterdam. Harvey Nichols Birmingham invited their VIP customers to an exclusive Philip Armstrong fashion show attended by the designers themselves. Designing duo Philip Armstrong and Tony Burke are famous for dressing some of the biggest celebrity names including Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez. The evening was a champagne fuelled affair with canapĂŠs and a private shopping evening following the show, which featured the Resort 12/13 collection. The after party was held at the glamorous Marco Pierre White Champagne Bar in The Cube.

Suzy Gorman, the Business Development Executive of Ollie & Darsh, the cosmetic dentist like no other in Liverpool Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your role at Ollie & Darsh? My role is that of a Business Development Executive, my overall function is to manage Ollie and Darsh and help us grow and develop. Having an M.B.A means I offer the clinic a combination of strategic marketing and sales skills. I can be involved in anything from developing new systems and protocols to the creation of marketing strategies, generation of sales leads, or negotiating and closing deals. I am often the first person our clients meet, and always try to maintain positive relationships with everyone. Occasionally, partnership opportunities arise which may create more business so with my role as Business Development Executive I will negotiate the terms of the business-to-business partnership in a way that is most favourable to Ollie and Darsh. How long have you been a part of the company for? Sudarsh, Daz and myself started the serious building work and the design of the clinic in August 2008 and I was instrumental right from the beginning; so just over four years. With my experience, I had a good understanding of the equipment and surgery layout and we worked together with our designer to create an outstanding clinic in the city. What is it about Ollie & Darsh that makes it different from other dentists? It is very much about the relationships we build. My depth of knowledge, experience and meticulous attention to detail is central to all our work and distinguishes us as a dental clinic, one which our clients unreservedly trust and rely on. From the stunning glass stairway and comfy leather sofas to the sumptuous wallpaper, clever lighting and faint aroma of Jo Malone candles, Ollie and Darsh takes away the traditional stigmas of coming to see the dentist. The look, approach and ambience of Ollie and Darsh are perfectly suited to the local clientele; we are situated in the business centre of the city, catering for busy professionals. A perfect smile is very individual and one size does not fit all, otherwise we would end up with smiles which all look the same and our motto is ‘Where individual Smile’s Matter’. Most people hate the experience of the dreaded dentist’s chair. How does the Ollie & Darsh experience differ? From that very first contact, whether it is via telephone, email, or the web, our methods of communication are always understanding and very reassuring. This is always with myself and held in ‘Suzy’s Suite’, which is a very private, confidential area of the clinic. This is probably something you have heard a lot of the time, but I truly love everything about my job. My favourite parts of my role include the ability and freedom I am given to work independently with complete trust from Daz and Sudarsh. Most importantly, every day I am amazed and very grateful for the excellent reputation of quality dental care we have achieved within the City of Liverpool and the rate at which it continues to grow.
