CHARITABLE FOUNDATION 12th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser August 2020

August 2020 Dear Friends, Congratulations! What an honor to be named a CWCF Scholarship recipient. Clearly you are all hardworking, determined individuals and should be very proud of this accomplishment. We only wish we had the opportunity to celebrate with you in person, but 2020 had a different plan for all of us, and while we are saddened by the fact we didn’t get to meet you and your family, all that truly matters is that you and yours are safe and healthy. We wish you much continued success and happiness in all you do. Sincerely, Ted Miller Co-President, CWCF Board

Marissa Weidner Co-President, CWCF Board About Ted Miller: Education has played such an important role in my life that it makes it difficult for me to contain my passion about it, and I am so proud to be Co-President of the CWCF Board. My parents grew up in the Great Depression, and they were the first in their families to graduate from college. My mom earned her Ph.D. and was a college professor at a time when that was almost unheard of. My dad, who sold newspapers on the street corner at age five, went on to become a Patent Attorney and Vice President of a large corporation after earning multiple degrees from prestigious institutions. Clearly, education totally changed both their circumstances and life paths, and in turn, did the same for those of myself and my sister, and then subsequently for our own children... the reverberation is limitless. Education inherently has a wonderful and profound multigenerational effect; our students, who are harnessing the power of education in order to improve their own lives—some of whom are the first in their own families to attend college – are indeed doing the same for generations to come. About Marissa Weidner: For me, my role as Co-President of the CWCF Board is extremely personal. I am thrilled to be in a position to support the amazing students of CW. I know how bright their future is as I am an alum and my career has far exceeded any expectation I had prior to attending the school! As a student, I learned what was possible, I was enabled to succeed, and the direction of my life was forever changed. For these reasons, I value the opportunity to stay involved, to help students realize their potential and I feel privileged to represent not only the CWCF Board but also the amazing students that are so deserving of your scholarship dollars. These students have the drive to succeed and your support is invaluable to them! So, congratulations to all of our deserving scholars! We wish them much continued success and happiness.

Education for today’s youth has always been a passion of his: “I am all about the kids, about education, taking care of the younger members of our community.” Since the College and Former Mayor Delfino have a long, collaborative relationship that goes back more than 30 years, it seemed fitting that an award be created in his honor – and thus the Mayor Joe Delfino Scholarship was born. Doris Metzger Miller Datakey Scholarship Award This year’s recipient is Kerian Adams, currently in the Health Information Managementnt/Marketing associate degree program. “As a teenager and then a young adult, it wasn’t always clear which path I should take. I decided to attend The College of Westchester to bring an end to my meandering and attend an institution where the office staff, faculty and advisors are student focused and very personal. They constantly encouraged me from the registration process through orientation. The support I received from day one has made the greatest impression on me. I am so happy to have found passion and look forward to going on to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management.” Datakey Consulting, founded by Ted Miller in 2004, recently established this scholarship in honor of Ted Miller’s mom, Doris Metzger Miller. Doris was a remarkable, colorful, and extremely bright woman who grew up quite poor during the Great Depression in Rochester, NY. With her passing, Ted has had many moments of reflection and gratitude for the strong foundation she has given him. Ted feels her greatest contribution as an individual was her encouragement of others, especially women, to believe in themselves enough to further their pursuits in education. Doris had an insatiable desire to learn and she continued to learn well after achieving her Ph. D. She was a college professor, a published researcher, and an instructional designer. When Ted opened his company in 2004, she was instrumental in creating the company name, DataKey. She firmly believed individuals should have the freedom to exercise their intellectual curiosity. Ted believes that it is because of his mother that education has played a key role in his life.

Jeanne Sutkowski Scholarship Award This year’s recipient is Chantal Dawkins, currently in the Healthcare Services Administration bachelor's degree program. Chantal is also a member of Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society. “I chose my major, Health Services Administration, to make money. While I am passionate about helping others, I must be able to help myself first. Right now I am focused on me, getting to my goal of graduation with my bachelor’s and having financial stability. This is so important to me because of all I endured in my life. When I made the decision to go back to school, The College of Westchester was the only one to reach out to me to answer my questions, and I am so thankful. This scholarship will help me reach my educational goals by following me not to stress too much about my loan debt. I will also be able to start focusing on my future instead of the past and what I did not have.” The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation established the Jeanne Sutkowski Scholarship in loving memory of a caring, devoted and hardworking wife and mother who cared for all around her. Jeanne was the wife of CW Chairman Emeritus, Ernest H. Sutkowski; mother to Vice Chair of the CW Board, Karen Smith; President & CEO, Mary Beth Del Balzo; and Vice President of Marketing and Media Resources, Nancy Trim. William R. Papallo Scholarship Award This year’s recipient is Erika Labanda, currently in the Accounting bachelor's degree program. “After obtaining my associate’s degree from CW, I held a great job for 9 years that allowed me to provide for my family. However, I knew I always wanted more. After 6 years, I finally decided to inquire about CW’s Bachelor’s program. I also decided to ask a wise professor at CW for his opinion and thoughts on what major to pursue because I was undecided between business and accounting. I am incredibly thankful to the professor for providing me with his professional feedback. Returning to school was the best thing I could do for myself as I know this is an investment in myself that will pay off. I am a proud CW student and can’t wait to see what great things I will accomplish after completing the accounting program. The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation established this scholarship to honor the memory of Dr. William R. Papallo who served as CW President from 1992 to 1997 and then served on the CW Board, ultimately as Chairman. Dr. Papallo was devoted to our college, students, staff, and faculty. He believed in the power of education and devoted his life to helping others in its pursuit. Radford Quesada Scholarship Award This year’s recipient is Kevin Santiago, currently in the Interactive Digital Media & Marketing bachelor's degree program. Kevin is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. “When I had first started The College of Westchester back in 2009, the major was different. I had originally started with pursuing an Associate’s degree in the Digital Media field. Now, it's evolved into a media marketing type degree once they introduced the bachelor's portion of it. From the original date up until this point, I chose digital media simply because I loved creating. Walt Disney was probably the one who changed me the most in terms of my art and what I would set out to do. And of course, my son and daughter. Everything I ever create and do is for them. Receiving this scholarship will help tremendously in helping me focus on my educational goals and putting less of a financial strain on my family. Thank you for helping to make it all possible.” The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation established this scholarship to honor the memory of Radford Quesada who was part of the CW family from 2008-2015, when his life was unexpectedly cut short. He was a dedicated employee and a wonderful person who always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. As Junior Network Administrator, he interacted with all staff, faculty, administration and students, and he always exemplified The CW Way in everything he did. His genuine personality inspired everyone that we do have time to just be people, to treat each other with kindness, to take a breath and enjoy life. Since he had such a positive impact on all he met during his service to CW, it was only fitting that a scholarship be named after him.

John Nunes Technology Scholarship This year’s recipient is Vishal Paryag, currently in the Information Technology Bachelor’s program. Vishis also a member of Phi That Kappa Honor Society. Since I was about five or six years old, I used to program TV remotes for my family. My grandpa used to fix and tinker with electronics. I think that may have been something that rubbed off on me as I found myself doing the same as I got older. So a major in IT seemed fitting for me. The beautiful thing about being an IT major is the various paths one can take such as networking, programming, cybersecurity, etc. Whichever path one decides to focus on, he or she can still change the way the world works, and I look forward to changing the world. John Nunes was a Partner and the Chief Information Officer at Compufit, located in White Plains NY. John was a passionate technologist and an incredibly compassionate soul. In April 2019, John tragically passed away, but his memory lives on for all who knew him. To honor John's legacy, Compufit has established The John Nunes Technology Scholarship to provide financial assistance to a College of Westchester student who is interested in pursuing a career in IT. John spent his life and career supporting people and would be honored to know that a student is now being supported in his name.

When I moved to the US, I knew this was a second chance to follow my dreams, and follow my dreams is something my grandfather always encouraged me to do. I called The College of Westchester and was introduced to the Medical Assistant Management major, which was exactly what I wanted. My plan is to graduate with honors and go straight into medical school to accomplish my dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist. I will accomplish my goal; I know I will. The CWCF Board established this award for students who have a true passion for success and going above and beyond. The right candidate for this award will be an Honor Society and/or CW Honors Program Member. Recipients of this award will display intelligence, determination, and creativity, all of which are assets in achieving personal and professional goals.
