Musicale pitches on... THE USEP PALARO 2014 held by patrick m. ariate last August 12 to 16 saw the absence of the external campuses namely Bislig Campus, College of Teachers for Education and Technology (CTET) and College of Agriculture and Related Sciences (CARS) in Tagum-Mabini Campus, and College of Governance and Business (CGB) in Mintal Campus. Only the colleges residing in Obrero Main Campus participated in the event. Through an official statement written by the University Sports Director, Jolly J. Laboy last August 11, the holding of the maiden intercampus USeP Palaro was cancelled. It was approved by the University President. However, their absence did not constitute closure of their participation in future holding of the same Palaro. An effort is needed to revisit the necessary activities to be conducted particularly by the colleges in the external campuses prior to the Palaro and review the budgetary requirements and their sources to expect a better arrangement of the future holding of the USeP Palaro. Furthermore, USeP assures an equitable selection of potential athletes to create the University Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) Team, USeP-Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) National Socio-Cultural Team, and USeP-National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Team. Despite the cancellation, the CGB-Mintal Campus, the nearest external campus from Obrero sent their candidates for Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP for they have already spent money for the pageant’s expenses. This was to compensate the efforts exerted by the candidates during the pictorial and talent night. Still, the five-day Palaro ended successfully in spite of the last minute cancellation.

USeP admin cancels Intercampus Palaro

The University Intramurals opened with a video presentation highlighting the 12 teams from USeP Obrero campus and USeP external campuses such as USeP Bislig, USeP Mintal and USeP Tagum-Mabini. The plan however did not materialize and the PALARO commenced with only 8 competitors from USeP Obrero campus.

EIGHT ASPIRING PAIRS represent their colleges, including the Mintal campus, ramped through the runway over the deafening crowd. It was a night to remember for the candidates competing for the crown of “Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP” 2014. From the production number, regional attire, and formal wear, they brightened up the dome with their smiles and tried to prove that they are worthy of the title. At the end of the night, Mr. Ernest Aristotle Prudente of CEd and Ms. Jacinta Eve Sevilla of CAS, proved their wits as they were crowned this year’s Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP to represent in the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS).

Cheer dance competition followed the Opening Program. The School of Applied Economics (SAEc) started the dice rolling followed by the College of Technology (CT), Institute of Computing (IC), College of Engineering (CE), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Governance and Business (CGB), College of Education (CEd) and the University Evening Program (UEP) was the last to present their entry.

The first runner-ups were Mr. Velrick Alibiano of UEP and Ms. Jennica Alexis Siocon of CEd and Mr. Jenisse Dowell Medel of CE and Ms. Genevieve Victoria K. España of CGB as 2nd runners-up, while Mr. Adonis Alladin of CGB and Ms. April Joy Obenza of Mintal came as 3rd runners-up. In comparison to the previous years, this year was obviously different because of the integration of technology in giving score to the candidates. But some students commented that the atmosphere was dull because the ambience of the event was not as festive as the usual. Overall, the event was dubbed successful.

Though the prestigious event ended up with a blast, it was very evident that there were lots of changes in this year’s pageant. But are those changes effective?

The UEP Blazing Wolves bested the seven contenders as the Champion in the Cheerdance competition. The CE Bulls came in as the 1st runner-up while the CEd Falcons grabbed the 2nd runner-up. On the other hand, the CE Bulls got the gold in Banner competition. Overall, the students enjoyed the Opening Program and the Cheerdance competition as they screamed loudly to cheer for their favorite teams. Indeed, it was a night of competitiveness.

WITH A STUNNING 17 GOLD, 4 silver and 8 bronze medals in their hands, the CEd let all the odds be in their favor as they delivered themselves to domination in the Sports Events of the USeP Palaro this year. In the minor sports, Thunders garnered the first place in Lawn Tennis in singles, Blazing wolves in doubles. While in the women category, Bulls got both the singles and doubles. Warriors governed in Table Tennis in both singles and doubles in men category while Bulls in women’s singles and doubles. Thunders grabbed the gold in Dart in men’s division and Bulls in women’s division. Sepak Takraw was ruled by the Thunders and the Amazing Race was finished first by the Bulls. While in Word Factory, Pirates became the champion. However, in the major sports, Bulls conquered the volleyball court in men’s division and Pirates in women’s division. In softball, Thunders ramped to the top in men’s division and Bulls in women’s division. While in football, Bulls were the champion. Nonetheless, Bulls were also the king in the basketball court in men’s division and Blazing wolves in women’s division. Despite some mishaps and the tough competition, the essence of camaraderie and unity still prevail in the hearts and minds of the USePians, accepting the downs yet celebrating the ups as the events concluded to its end.
