Welcome Back Commodores! A letter from your principal, Dr. Kitchens Hello students and welcome back to LHS for the 2015-16 school year. This marks the 50th year since the establishment of Lafayette County Schools back in 1965. The first students were graduated from LHS in May 1966. The inaugural class had 49 members and that class composite hangs here in our hallway today. Take a look at it and see if you recognize anyone from our community. We hope to have some of them on campus as special guests during Homecoming 2015. As your new principal, I want you to know that it is an honor for me to serve you in this capacity. I first worked at Lafayette County Schools from 1996 through 2003. I served as assistant principal to Dr. James Herod at Lafayette Elementary School which was grades K-6 when I arrived on campus. Lafayette had three schools when I left in 2003 and now there are four schools on our district campus. Lafayette continues to grow and prosper and I know that you are proud to be a part of the great Lafayette tradition. It is very exciting for me to be back at Lafayette serving alongside the many other wonderful educators and students of Lafayette County. Seniors, your time is here. I look forward to meeting you at our class meeting and spending this year with you. I know that you all expected Mr. Robinson to be with you and the loss of that familiarity with his move to a new position may bring some anxious feelings. Mr. Robinson is a great man with superb character and he is a friend of mine. Know that even though you have a new principal it is going to be a great year for you here at LHS and we have Mr. Robinson available just across Commodore Drive for advice at any time. Lafayette High School is a special place and I challenge you to be true to the Commodore spirit by working to your greatest potential in all of your coursework and extracurricular choices. We have a lot of learning to do and a lot of activities to carry out so play your role well as we work toward an outcome of success in every area of school life. Take pride in our school community and show your Commodore spirit at all times. Let’s have a great year together and just remember, everybody wants to be a Commodore! Go ‘Dores,
Glenn Kitchens

A school song, who knew? Many students probably wouldn’t have guessed there is a school song. Lafayette should really encourage it more to show Commodore Pride. The Alma Mater should be played at school pep rallys, football games, or just any school event in general. This would help the students become more familiar with the song, similar to The Pledge of Allegiance. Most students know the pledge by heart because it is recited during school. Singing The Alma Mater more often would not only build school pride, but help make graduation more meaningful. by: Katie Sicks, Brook Savage, and Destiny Mooneyham
