Centre for the Arts

The Courtyard

Welcome to The Courtyard

Welcome to The Courtyard The autumn season at The Courtyard always brings a wide variety of quality productions for you to choose from. I hope you agree that it provides a perfect mixture of what we think our audiences like best about Herefordshire’s Centre for the Arts. Having celebrated working at The Courtyard for 10 years this year, I am delighted to bring you a programme that I feel is stronger than ever and celebrates everything that The Courtyard has achieved. Especially now that we have been recognised nationally by Arts Council England as one of the 650 organisations they will continue to fund over the next four years, a major achievement for us and for Herefordshire. Some of the highlights of the season that I want to draw to your attention are the amazing company Lip Service who will be performing their production of Withering Looks, a potted version of Wuthering Heights and the lives and letters of the Bronte sisters. This comic, yet quite literate romp through their works is a must see this season. London Classic Theatre return with their latest production of Equus. Originally staged in 1973, this Peter Schaffer play was inspired by a true story. Peter Shaffer’s unique psychological thriller explores the complex relationships between worship, myth and sexuality. Both thought-provoking and moving, this is high on my list of ones to watch. Mid Wales Opera make their annual pilgrimage to Hereford with Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, containing some of the most sumptuous music ever written for the opera stage. With such a popular title this is guaranteed to book quickly, so make sure you call the Box Office or, better still, book on-line at any time of day as soon as you can. Of course the highlight of the year for many of our patrons has to be The Courtyard’s traditional family pantomime. This year I am delighted to welcome back Mr Tim McArthur, as Dame Katherine Weale, in what I know will be an enchanting production of Sleeping Beauty. It’s never too early to book for the show, and you are never too old to enjoy the magic of the pantomime here. I am very much looking forward to what the next 10 years will bring for us at The Courtyard, and hope that you will join me and the rest of the team here for many more visits this season. Equus by Peter Shaffer In a Hampshire stable, a youth blinds six horses with a metal spike. Convicted of this appalling crime, seventeen-year-old Alan Strang is sent to a secure psychiatric hospital. Martin Dysart, the child psychiatrist assigned to him, begins to probe Alan’s past in an attempt to understand his motives. Initially the boy is silent and uncooperative, but as Dysart digs deeper, he begins to win Alan’s trust and the truth gradually emerges. The Celtic Tenors In Concert

Saturday 1 October 7.30pm

Everest – By The West Ridge In the Studio

The Celtic Tenors are talented, dynamic and charismatic. They have been touring the world at the highest level since they formed in 2000 and were initially rocketed onto the world stage after a sensational worldwide signing with EMI Classics.

In March 2006 a team from the British Army set out to climb Mount Everest via the notorious West Ridge. This remote route had only been previously climbed by 19 people and a successful ascent had not been made for 15 years.

Their evening show is very varied and entertaining. The lads themselves say they are a little selfish though… only singing the songs they love… but because of this they have a real passion and resonance on stage. Songs from folk and Irish, to classical crossover, to opera - all sung with real integrity by three down to earth guys with a sense of fun too - all of this makes their show unique and uplifting.

After 55 days of fixing ropes and establishing camps the Expedition was ready for its first summit attempt. In stark contrast to the hundreds of people preparing for their own summit bids on the popular North Ridge and South Col routes, the Army team was all alone battling along the West Ridge. The solitude was welcome.

Catch the Celtic Tenors in concert and enjoy their eclectic mix of classical, folk, Irish and pop. www.celtictenors.com £ £18, concessions £17

Just after midnight on the 21st May 2006 a team of 4 climbers and 2 Sherpas left the safety of Camp 5 high on the North Face of Everest and climbed towards the top of the world’s highest mountain. Expedition members Guy Homan and Malcolm Russell recount the inside story of Everest West Ridge 2006 using dramatic photos and video footage taken from high on the mighty mountain. £ £15 or £35 to include a post-show supper and wine.

Zoe’s husband Liam finds his wife’s erratic behaviour increasingly difficult but when he suggests a trip to the cinema all manner of strangeness begins to unfold. ‘The Slip’ takes you from egg and chips to the edge of time and back again.

Crik The Croc is adapted from a West African story, It is performed with unique bunraku puppets and live music on a multitude of interesting looking instruments.

Confusion, twists and mental turmoil are expertly and imaginatively depicted by the performers whilst choreographed movement helps to create the play’s hazy time zones to great effect.
