WELCOME We are delighted to be able to bring such a wide variety of productions for you to choose from. There really is something for everyone within our latest programme.
WELCOME Welcome to our May to August season here at The Courtyard.
The May to August programme brings a close to our very exciting 20th Anniversary year, which has brought a variety of exciting events and productions to The Courtyard. The Courtyard continues to provide a platform for the arts in many ways, not just on stage but throughout the community of Herefordshire. Our work in the community, through our education, outreach and participatory programmes continue to flourish regionally, nationally and internationally. The Courtyard is, of course, your arts centre which needs your support to enable us to continue working in the community. It is only with the support of everyone that uses The Courtyard by purchasing tickets, becoming a friend or patron, supporting our fundraising appeals or using our fantastic CafÊ Bar that we will remain as Herefordshire’s centre for the arts for generations to come. So I do hope that you will join me and the rest of The Courtyard team for the fantastic shows or through our work in the community.

AD ST One stormy day a young farm girl, Dorothy Gale, decides to run away from home but she is swept away by a tornado and finds herself in the magical land of Oz. With her faithful dog Toto at her side, she sets off on an adventure to find her way back home. She must journey along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to ask the mysterious and all-powerful Wizard for help. Along the way she makes some rather strange but wonderful friends, the Scarecrow who would like a brain, a Tinman who wishes he had a heart and the cowardly Lion who just needs some courage. The friends face many dangers along the way, mostly sent by the Wicked Witch of the West who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Dorothy’s ruby slippers. This faithful adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company features all the most beloved songs and moments from the 1939 classic film, brought to life onstage by The Courtyard’s Junior Youth Theatre. KEITH JAMES: THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE
Keith James presents a haunting and immaculately crafted concert; The Songs of Nick Drake. Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all this country’s singer/songwriters. He recorded three cherished albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974, aged only 26, his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his genius, Nick Drake has become a National treasure. At the beginning of the project in 2001, Keith James was the first artist ever to bring this fragile and intriguing music to theatres across the UK in its pure live concert form, resulting in a decade of highly acclaimed concerts. ‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent TICKETS £18

A THOUSAND FACES
A bold dance-theatre that features Amina Khayyam working with Kathak’s intricate and detailed theatrical gestures of abhinaya, A Thousand Faces uses imagery of Bollywood beauty and Hollywood glamour to explore violence against women, in particular, acid attacks. Ang Abhinaya is part of Kathak that is often paid less attention to in its current progression within a neo-classical approach. However, Amina Khayyam, renowned for her abhinaya, has developed new approaches in this new work by bringing influences of European experimental forms of physical theatre and mime movement to give the piece a wholly unique and innovative treatment, highlighting the contemporary condition. Mr. Fischer has always wanted to help people overcome injustices. This led to a career as an international attorney, however, Alex felt something was lacking - a spiritual dimension to his work. A few years later, he exchanged his law profession for that of Christian Science practitioner in order to pray with people to perceive God better as all-loving, and feel more of God’s divine love in their lives. Christian Science follows the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and explained in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Christian Science movement. Alex’s talk will explore both of these books to see how a fresh perception of God can be part of anyone’s life and bring spiritual healing. TICKETS FREE BOOKING ESSENTIAL

THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE Following a sell-out West End run, European Arts Company presents this brilliant dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials of Oscar Wilde, written by his grandson Merlin Holland. Thursday 14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde’s career. Less than 100 days later, he found himself a common prisoner sentenced to two years hard labour. So what happened during the trials and what did Wilde say? Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? Using the actual words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius - as this less than ideal husband is suddenly reduced to a man of no importance. “Please don’t miss The Trials of Oscar Wilde utterly compelling and heart-rending. WELCOME
FUNDRAISING 20th Anniversary Appeal update
We’re more than halfway through celebrating our birthday year which runs to the end of August 2019. The charity has faced serious challenges including rapidly reducing funding but we’ve worked hard to protect our vital community programmes for the people of Herefordshire. Did you know that we now raise over 90% of our own income, much more than many arts centres our size? To support our work and the venue itself, we’re running a special 20th Anniversary Appeal to raise £70,000 by August 2019 and so far we’ve raised around £40,000 so thanks to everyone who’s donated.
Some of the items on our current wish list are: £4,100 20 Youth Theatre bursaries for disadvantaged young people £49,000 6 specialist professional moving lights for the Main House £10,000 to support our Creative Ageing projects £3,800 equipment to improve hire facilities If you’d like to help us reach our target, please donate online at www.courtyard.org.uk/ donate or at Box Office, set up a regular donation or sponsor a Main House seat for five years (forms available at Box Office).
THANK YOU!
