WELCOME FROM HEAD OF FILM, SIMON NICHOLLS
I am pleased to be writing the introduction to the Courtyard Cinema’s latest brochure in the middle of the Borderlines Film Festival 2019 and judging by the audience’s reactions to the wide variety of films being screened, cinema is alive and well. Being at the heart of the festival here at The Courtyard also means we have the chance to get sight of pre-releases and included in this brochure we will be pleased to give some of those films a wider opportunity to be seen once they are on general release. In this guide these include Ralph Fiennes’ The White Crow, Asghar Farhadi’s sold out Gala Night film Everybody Knows and the crowd-pleasing Wild Rose from director Tom Harper. Together with a mini season of World Cinema curated by WOW festival’s director David Gillam as well as a repeat screening of the festival’s sell out hit ÁGA I really hope you find something to both challenge and entertain.

A moving portrait of resilience chronicling the unprecedented journey of 24-year-old Tracy Edwards and the first all-female sailing crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race. “Lovely, elegant... generous helpings of dance and a true-life East-meets-West intrigue” Variety
ctor-director Ralph Fiennes’s third feature focuses A on world-famous, ultra-flamboyant ballet star Rudolf Nureyev. Fiennes’s approach is understated rather than flashy, but vividly evokes the atmosphere and texture of the time. ‘A monument of modern cinema’ The Independent
Stars: Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke
Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ decline-of-civilisation novel remains a chilling, thrilling and unsettling cinematic vision of nihilistic violence and social control. Set in a flamboyantly stylised near-future where gangs of disenfranchised teenagers indulge in narcotic cocktails and revel in acts of “ultraviolence”, the film centres on anti-hero Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his band of droogs. First re-release in 19 years with a brand new 2k digital transfer.
This film has been rated ‘18’ by the BBFC as it contains scenes of sexual violence. Please see the BBFC insight at www.bbfc.co.uk for more details.
