WELCOME FROM HEAD OF FILM, SIMON NICHOLLS

Fifty years ago, as a small boy, I was sat around a small black and white television marveling at the grainy and gloomy pictures being beamed directly from the surface of the moon and in doing so a lifelong love of science fiction cinema was born. In celebration of this momentous human achievement Nasa have released, for the first time, never-before-seen footage of that epic space voyage. Shot on 70mm film, the biggest and highest analogue definition you can get, our screenings of the new documentary Apollo 11 are guaranteed to leave you thinking about our place in the world and the responsibilities to our planet we have. Talking of anniversaries and science fiction, Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien celebrates 40 years and can still pack a punch. If you’ve never had a chance to see it on the big screen why not book yourself in for our Cult-Classic Cinema screening and enjoy it as it was meant to be seen.

UK, 2018, 1hr 41m Director: Trevor Nunn Writer: Lindsay Shapero Stars: Judi Dench, Tom Hughes, Stephen Boxer

Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information, including details on the building of the atomic bomb, to the Soviet government for decades. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical (Tom Hughes); and the devastation of World War II, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. Based on a sensational true story.

“Lyndsay Shapero has captured an intriguing piece of hidden history, showcasing women’s strengths and the overlooked roles they played during the world’s most turbulent times of war.” Film Threat
