WELCOME

WELCOME

IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL Welcome to what is going to be the most exciting time in the history of The Courtyard. In addition to providing Herefordshire with an amazing and varied programme, work will begin on expanding your arts centre in April and continue through to mid-September 2020.

The Courtyard has so much to offer and there is something for everyone, not just on stage but throughout the community of Herefordshire and through our education, outreach and participatory work. Our work throughout the county and in the venue is growing exponentially and it is for this reason that we need to expand our much-loved arts centre. Since we opened in 1998, The Courtyard has welcomed over 5.5 million visitors, produced over 100 in-house shows, became the first dementia friendly arts centre in the country, worked with over 28,000 children in the last 10 years, had 7000 young people through its Youth Theatre, worked with over 77 care homes and has seen more than 55,000 attendances at our Creative Ageing activities. This is an amazing achievement and something we can all be very proud of. The Courtyard is committed to providing opportunities for everyone in Herefordshire to experience culture and creativity either by visiting The Courtyard or through our work in the community. The ‘new look’ Courtyard will provide us with much needed additional space to allow us to build on our successes of the last 22 years, and, at the same time, embrace the challenges and possibilities we have ahead of us. Please continue to support us through our development. It will be Business as usual. It will just look a little bit different! Thank you all for your support of The Courtyard. Best wishes Ian Archer Chief Executive & Artistic Director

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

As most of you will know by now, The Courtyard is undergoing a major transformation this year, with work commencing in April 2020. We know there will be a lot of questions about the project, so we’ve put together a few frequently asked questions that should answer most queries.

Why are you making these changes? In order to carry on offering a cultural venue to Herefordshire and beyond, we need to be able to grow to remain sustainable. We want to ensure that our building will continue to be welcoming and accessible to our community. What will change? There will be significant changes to the building, including: Large first floor multi-function rehearsal, workshop and performance space New accessible entrance A new retail space incorporating a revamped Box Office Café Bar expansion and refurbishment Outdoor terrace on the first floor, alongside an extended Mezzanine How long will the work take? The work will begin in April 2020 and is due for completion by September 2020. Will The Courtyard remain open throughout? Yes, the building will operate usual opening hours and our rich and varied programme of events will continue throughout the redevelopment period. It’s so important to us that you continue to visit and support us throughout these works, we couldn’t do it without you! Will the refurbishment cause much disruption to your day-to-day activities? We will do our best to ensure that disruption during this time is minimal, but do refer to our website to see the latest changes affecting your visit. Our staff will be happy to help you when you visit if you can’t find what you need. Where will Youth Theatre and other groups/ workshops be? All sessions will carry on as normal, as our workshop rooms will not be affected.

Will you still host events during building works? Yes, don’t worry! We will still have performances as normal. We aren’t doing any work to our Main House or Studio so these spaces will not be affected, and work will not be happening in the evenings. There may be some changes to our Cinema schedule during the day, but we will endeavour to screen as many films as possible. Will I still be able to eat & drink in The Courtyard Café Bar? The Café Bar will remain in operation throughout the development works, it will just look a little different. We have plenty of space throughout the building where we’re going to relocate our tables and seating areas, you might just get a new view while eating your food! Where can I buy tickets? Tickets are available to book as usual on the phone, online and in person at our Box Office. Box Office will be moved slightly in to our foyer space. It will be clearly visible and sign posted. Turn to page 22 & 23 to find out more! Keep up to date with the latest images and news of the construction by visiting our blog! courtyard.org.uk/blog

SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE FUTURE

This April we undertake The Courtyard Capital Expansion Project.

time to Transform The Yard!

Why do we need to do this?

It’s full steam ahead for the biggest capital project The Courtyard charity has undertaken in its 22-year history after contracts were signed with local building firm CJ Bayliss in February.

Being at the heart of our community means using creativity, culture and entertainment to improve health, wellbeing and social isolation. Providing access to the arts for all, helping to build relationships and growing talent is the reason our charity exists. The additional space will enable The Courtyard’s ever increasing learning and participation work to flourish further and we can continue to bring our community together.

This exciting development will set the stage for the future, transforming our much-loved venue to improve customer experience, increase accessibility and enable us to reach even more people with our creative community work.

See FAQ’s on P.3 or visit courtyard.org.uk/transformtheyard for more information. Supported by:
