WELCOME
WELCOME
On behalf of the whole team at The Courtyard, I am delighted to welcome you to our latest season of fabulous productions, screenings, music and much, much more. The Autumn season is always a busy one and this year is no exception. As always we bring a wide variety of exciting events to choose from. I am particularly delighted to present our third professional and amateur production of Dickens’ least sentimental love story and gritty adaptation of Great Expectations. This adaptation, by Nick Ormerod and Declan Donnellan was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2005. Last years’ Panto, Peter Pan, was nominated as one of the top 5 (under 750 seats) in the country and I am sure this year’s Cinderella will be as equally acclaimed. Don’t forget to book early! Tickets for our spellbinding and magical Cinderella are already selling fast. In addition to what goes on our stage and screen here at The Courtyard, our work within the community, schools and Youth Theatre is immense. In our 20 years we have worked with over 28,000 children, and 77 care homes. We were the first ever dementia friendly arts centre in the UK and can boast over 600 dementia friends. The Courtyard has produced over 98 in-house productions, received 5.5 million visitors and our volunteers have clocked over 200,000 hours. The Courtyard is a hub of activity and it is, of course, your arts centre. As you may be aware, we are about to ‘Transform The Yard’. Having received a grant of £500,000 from Arts Council England, we are embarking on a £1.2 million extension programme. Beginning in May 2020, we will be extending the Café Bar, building a new multi-purpose performance space and meeting room, refurbishing the Box Office, re-siting the main entrance with a new double door, extending the first floor mezzanine and building a roof top terrace over the extension. Please note that The Courtyard will remain open throughout the transformation! These much needed alterations to The Courtyard will allow us to develop and increase our resilience ensuring that The Courtyard remains at the heart of cultural life in Herefordshire. So, I do hope that you will join me and the rest of The Courtyard team for a fantastic season.

CONFESSIONS OF A COCKNEY TEMPLE DANCER
In a peaceful Norfolk village three people are seeking happiness. But as the harvest moon fills and the party begins, ancient forces are brought to life. While Tony and Mike get trapped in the tunnels below the village, Gill’s plan for revenge turns extremely nasty.

A darkly comic journey through 24 hours in the life of a village called Little Bevan, this new play by Robert Alan Evans promises live music, storytelling and the spirit of a 10th century saint..
With his inimitable charm and wit, Shane will have you laughing out loud as he reveals his past through a vivid display of characters, lived experiences and comical stories, reflecting on how race, language, identity and cultures have defined him and his career.

2 Fine Art graduates 2 worlds apart, together. Roger and Harrie. It was 2014 when Harrie chose to study a Foundation Course at the Hereford College of Art. At about the same time her father, Roger, was driven, by others, to go for an interview, with a Portfolio, to Hereford College of Art (HCA). Same course as Harrie but probably not with an equal sense of mission nor enthusiasm. How that all changed for Roger! Given the green light at an interview to join the course his mission became clear and he became an ultra-keen student of Art. Although he saw himself working in ceramics, very early on paint became his true love. Harrie developed a more conceptual approach to her work. Roger moved on to a degree in Fine Art, whilst Harrie went to Bristol (UWE). They both graduated in 2018. They then showcased their work together at East Friars Gallery and now, by invitation, at The Courtyard.

OUR FUTURE... YOUR COURTYARD #TransformTheYard During summer 2020 we will undertake The Courtyard Capital Expansion Project, part-funded by a grant from Arts Council England. Transform The Yard is an exciting project that will set the stage for the future, transforming our much-loved venue and improving customer experience, increasing accessibility and enabling us to reach even more people with our community work. Our ambitions have no limits but our resources do… and we need your help! We have secured most of the funding, but need to raise a further £700,000 to complete the work, with an additional £200,00 for fitting out. “The demand for culture has grown alongside the population of Herefordshire and The Courtyard is now running at capacity. Without the transformation project, The Courtyard would be overwhelmed by demand and, if we remained as we are, within five years we would be unable to continue operating in our current form.” Ian Archer, Chief Executive & Artistic Director.

BOX OFFICE 01432 340555
There will be significant changes to the building including a more accessible entrance and Box Office, a new space to allow more workshops and meeting hires as well as a retail space for local arts and crafts. We’ll also be extending and transforming the Café Bar areas, including creating a beautiful outdoor terrace. So help us to ensure that The Courtyard continues to be a place for arts, entertainment, community and friends for generations to come. Visit courtyard.org.uk/transformtheyard for more information. It’ll be business as usual during the work, but please bear with us as the transformation takes place!
Glenn Howells Architects, original designers of The Courtyard, have been commissioned to undertake the project. Here are some of the artists impressions.

FUNDRAISING Transform The Yard!
Next year we’re embarking on a transformational development of The Courtyard and really want you to be a part of it. Thanks to everyone who helped make our 20th Anniversary Appeal such a success, raising more than £40,000 at the time of going to press with more to come before the end of the Appeal in August. The new and really exciting news is that we’re just about to embark on a major capital project - a transformational development of the existing spaces within the venue next spring/summer and we really want you to be a part of this! The building work – see page 40 for more information – will cost approximately £1.2 million. The good news is that we’ve already secured a £500,000 grant from Arts Council England, alongside a generous five-figure pledge from an anonymous supporter. Registered charity no.1067869
42 BOX OFFICE 01432 340555
We are applying to various trusts and foundations too but really need the help of all our members, supporters and audiences to reach the target. We will all have our part to play in transforming this wonderful venue for future generations, creating the ability to generate vital long term additional income for the charity. We’ll be launching the Transform The Yard fundraising campaign this autumn so watch this space and if you’d like any information or wish to donate now, please contact Individual Giving Manager Melanie Denning on 01432 346503, email: melanie.denning@ courtyard.org.uk

Relaxed Screenings
Dementia Friendly
Relaxed film screenings are open to everyone but may benefit individuals with autism spectrum conditions, learning difficulties or sensory and communication difficulties. We aim to have a Relaxed Screening at least once a season.
The Courtyard was the first Arts Centre in the UK to join the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). The DAA is committed to transforming the quality of life of people living with dementia and their carers.
Relaxed Performances A Relaxed Performance is specifically designed for those who would appreciate a less formal theatre environment. Visit courtyard.org.uk/relaxed-performances for more information and up to date events.
Audio Description Audio Description for the visually impaired, is available on selected live events and film screenings.
The Courtyard has been working to develop initiatives to ensure The Courtyard is a ‘dementia friendly’ venue. All of our staff and stewards receive Dementia Awareness training to help them understand the needs of people living with dementia.
