SOMETHING IN THE AIR Ringing in some awards-contenders for the New Year, 2019 brings a wealth of tasty new titles to the big screen.
BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL
There must be something in the air though, as some of our favourite directors try on new genres for size, and deliver up some surprising new stories.
FRIDAY 1 - SUNDAY 17 MARCH
Mike Leigh takes on the historical tale of the uprising at Peterloo (12A), Yorgos Lanthimos brings his uniquely humorous and obscure outlook to the heavily Oscar-tipped period comedy The Favourite (15), Zemeckis goes deep with an inventive tale about art’s capacity to heal in Welcome to Marwen (12A), and Steve McQueen moves away from the tragic, to an intelligent heist thriller with some kick-ass female leads in Widows (15).
Borderlines is the UK’s largest rural film festival and one of the best attended film festivals nationally. Taking place in 25 venues across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Malvern and the Marches, 30% of the programme now comprises titles showing on preview. Borderlines is the only film festival programmed by the Independent Cinema Office.

AD ST
UK, 2018, 2h 34m DIRECTOR & WRITER: Mike Leigh
Winner - Human Rights Film Network AwardSpecial Mention - Mike Leigh
STARS: Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Bell
An intelligent, epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful prodemocracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. Leigh brings his usual unflinching gaze to this historical moment, with a passion that will rile activists, and raises questions about equality 100 years on.
“There is force, grit and, above all, a sense of purpose; a sense that the story he has to tell is important and real, and that it needs to be heard right now.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian ★★★★★

Japan, 2018, 2h, Japanese with English subtitles DIRECTOR AND WRITER: Hirokazu Kore-eda STARS: Kriin Kiki, Lily Franky, Sosuke Ikematsu
The master of understated, but intoxicatingly thoughtful and humanist Japanese cinema, Kore-eda this time serves up a tale of morality and blurred boundaries, questioning the definition of family. Casual labourer Osamu makes his family money selling the wares collected by his thieving boy, Shota. When Osamu and Shota find a shivering young girl on the street, they take her in, a new protégé for the family of thieves to train… but Shota creates cause for concern, when jealousy takes hold. Throughout this film, we will be accepting donations for Hereford Food Bank.

BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Wardle brings this incredible and unbelievable story to light. Three Identical Strangers charts the astonishing story of three men who make the chance discovery, at the age of 19, that they are identical triplets, separated at birth and adopted to different parents. The trio’s reunion catapults them to fame but it also sets in motion a chain of events that unearths an extraordinary and disturbing secret. Proof that life truly is stranger than fiction.
“Tim Wardle’s engrossing and sometimes enraging documentary Three Identical Strangers about triplets grows darker and more disturbing, before developing into a shocker.” Manohla Dargis, The NYTimes

A police shootout leaves four thieves dead during an explosive armed robbery attempt in Chicago. Their widows have nothing in common except a debt left behind by their spouses’ criminal activities.
