Sully (12A)

DB

Director: Clint Eastwood Starring: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney USA, 2016, 1 hour 36 minutes

In the cockpit of his US Airways jet, Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger sees both his plane engines catch fire. Scanning the horizon, he veers towards Manhattan. It’s the wrong move. He calls his wife to tell her he loves her. This is a stirring tribute to the matter-offact school of modest, everyday heroism.

Adapted from the popular children’s book this is a lovely family film for younger children. Young orphan Molly Moon learns how to hypnotise people from a book she finds in her local library. Hypnotising her way to stardom Molly soon becomes rich and famous. He kidnaps Molly’s dog, Petula and blackmails her. In order to get Petula back, Molly has to rob Shorings Bank of all its jewels! Paterson (15) Director: Jim Jarmusch

Starring: Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani USA, 2016, 1 hour 53 minutes

This effortlessly charming tale chronicles a week in the life of Paterson, a bus driver and amateur poet. Observing fragments of life and overhearing snippets of passengers’ conversations, Paterson is constantly attuned to the extraordinary and poetic, even in the smallest of gestures. “A lovely fable about the fragile, fruitful and occasionally fraught relationship between creativity and everyday life.” Geoff Andrew, Time Out

Arrival (12A) Director: Denis Villeneuve

Louise Banks is an expert linguist employed to communicate with aliens after their spaceships land across the globe. Her softer approach is slowly yielding dividends, but is undermined by the predictably aggressive response of the military around her. Visually inventive, aweinspiring and compelling, this cleverly explores ideas of memory, loss, love and non-linear time and will certainly make you think.

Snowden (15 tbc)

Director: Oliver Stone

USA, 2016, 1 hour 27 minutes tbc Subtitles

STARRING: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans,

Set in the awesome Altai Mountains this documentary follows 13-year-old tough cookie Aisholpan, who causes a stir in her tribe as she is determined to follow in her father’s footsteps as an Eagle Hunter. Something no other woman has ever done before. Above all she wants to compete in the annual Golden Eagle Festival. But first she has to undertake the difficult and dangerous task of taking an eaglet from its nest and training it to hunt for her.

Stone paints a faithful portrait of the world’s most famous spy, presenting Snowden as a quiet, patriotic, Bush-supporting geek who very reluctantly came to believe that what he was doing was wrong. Like some real world James Bond film this plays out in underground bunkers and spy stations across the world.
