Frustrated father Troy is not a particularly likeable man struggling through hard times and everyday racism while strictly laying down the law to his family. All the while his long-suffering wife, Rose remains ever loyal. Based on a Pulitzer Prize winning play this is an actor’s showcase above all else. Full of lively, funny dialogue, Washington gives a powerhouse performance as an ageing patriarch undone by his pride, stupidity and bitterness. While Davis is stunningly good as bullied, heart-broken Rose whose strength holds the family together. “an aching, lyrical, performance-driven masterpiece” Village Voice
