WELCOME Welcome to the January to April season and what promises to be a very exciting new year at The Courtyard. 2017 was one of The Courtyard’s busiest and most successful years and we can be proud of breaking some Box Office records throughout the year.
PRIDE & PREJUDICE
For those of you who came along to see our critically acclaimed production of Pride and Prejudice, you will have witnessed members of our Youth Theatre on stage with professional actors in an inspired and creative production which was no small achievement. It’s still not too late to book for your Christmas outing, whether it be our magical pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, our studio Children’s Christmas show, Little Red Riding Hood or our Christmas Comedy Club to watch some top class comedy at The Courtyard. This year promises to be a very exciting year for The Courtyard, as it is our 20th Anniversary year. Our celebrations will start in September when, 20 years ago, The Courtyard’s doors first opened for business and we haven’t looked back since! In the meantime, there is so much going on at The Courtyard, not just on stage but throughout the community of Herefordshire and through our education, outreach and participatory work. There really is something for everyone. I do hope that you will join me and the rest of The Courtyard team for all the fantastic shows or through our work in the community. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Over the last couple of months The Courtyard has been looking at Classical Music for the year 2016/17 and have recently finished the audience survey for this genre. Here are some facts and stats that have come out of this research.
89% of Classical
Music bookers were from Herefordshire,
with the most popular postcode being HR1 (27%).
Live Screenings
were also quite popular with Classical Music audience as they made up 13% of that audience too.
66% of people thought that one way to bring more of an audience in would be to do ticket deals i.e. dinner and a show, ticket and a drink.
9
Another genre that Classical Music bookers enjoyed last year was Film, including The Courtyard’s own programme and Borderlines Film Festival.
THURSDAY 11 JANUARY 8PM MAIN HOUSE
ROCK N ROLL ERA
There were 150 responses to the survey which was sent out electronically and distributed via paper. One comment that came from the survey was that it would be useful “to put on Classical Music events £10get that children£can 8 involved in, with their families”. OR

We use these surveys to help shape our programming and they provide us with valuable insight into how our audience perceive The Courtyard and what we offer so thank you to everybody who responded.

GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES! Here at The Courtyard, we’re passionate about giving young people from across Herefordshire – whether that’s individuals, local schools, colleges or our Youth Theatre – as many opportunities as possible to discover their creative capabilities in a supportive environment. This year’s production of Pride & Prejudice was a brilliant example of how The Courtyard gives young people the opportunity to achieve great, creative things! Thanks to support from a local trust, the young actors in this year’s production were able to develop their skills and talent by working alongside their professional counterparts, as well as the creative team behind the show. That’s why our latest I HEART CY appeal video features Izzy Harrison (right) who played Miss Charlotte Lucas in our production of Pride & Prejudice as well as being in many other previous productions. You can help us to give more young people access to these amazing experiences, and keep all of our community work going, by supporting our I HEART CY fundraising appeal to raise £25,000 by next March. That’s also why this year’s Christmas Appeal will support I Heart CY campaign.

BeautifuL is a new dance theatre work encompassing movement and text, exploring love and sexuality from the point of view of women; what is fantasised about, desired and permissible within the complex web of social structures, expectations and cultural history. In 2015 Mawkin delivered their self-produced and critically acclaimed album The Ties That Bind. Their ‘unapologetically energetic’ approach and DIY ethic surprised critics, fans and welcomed new audience members describing them as a ‘modern day Fairport’. With a host of rebel rousing folk songs and instrumentals the band modernise traditional folk material with their own touch and have since excited audiences with their artillery of loud, boisterous, foot stomping live sets. Critics of the album suggested that Mawkin might fill the ‘Bellowhead shaped hole’ so it seemed only natural to support them on their farewell tour of 2016 amongst a flurry of key festivals and UK tour dates. The Original Theatre Company presents
Directed by Alastair Whatley The Importance Being Earnest by the master of comedy Oscar Wilde, makes a welcome visit to Herefordshire society in this wonderfully witty, deliciously decadent and classic revival from The Original Theatre Company. Jack wishes to marry Algernon’s cousin the beautiful Gwendolen but first he must convince her mother, the fearsome Lady Bracknell, of the respectability of his parents and his past. For Jack, however, this is not as easy as it sounds, having started life abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station. Prepare to take a welcome turn with Wilde’s much-loved Algernon, Jack, Gwendolen and Cecily, as town and country clash in a brilliant and wildly funny story of romance, identity, perambulators and capacious handbags. Starring the imperious Gwen Taylor (Coronation Street, Duty Free and Barbara) as the formidable Lady Bracknell and the delightful Susan Penhaligon (Upstairs Downstairs and Bergerac) as the hapless Miss Prism, Wilde’s most famous and entertaining play is set to delight. IT’S OK I’M DEALING WITH IT Cristina and Chess have both experienced smashing their two front teeth. It affected them, and it got them thinking. In a culture preoccupied with keeping a stiff upper lip and for everything to always be ‘fine’: how do we deal with difficult things? What happens if we don’t want to deal with them? Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry and sometimes we try our best to distract ourselves. But don’t worry: it’s okay, we’re dealing with it. After a sell out run at Brighton Fringe 2016 and a sell out in Brighton Festival 2017, It’s Okay, I’m Dealing With It asks what we do when things aren’t okay. Through their multi award-winning combination of dance, comedy, chat and song, Cristina MacKerron and Chess Dillon-Reams unravel their own struggles and vulnerabilities and try to piece together how to cope with them. EUGENE ONEGIN
Eugene Onegin combines Pushkin’s compelling and heartbreaking story with Tchaikovsky’s sweeping lyricism in a stunning exploration of love, death, life and convention. Filled with breath-taking arias including Tatyana’s great letter scene, a tour de force of the soprano repertoire, the poignant tale contrasts the simplicity of country life with the sophisticated excesses of Russia’s pre-revolutionary court and tells of the fated love between the innocent Tatyana and the world-weary cynic Onegin. A fabulous cast includes rising new stars and internationally recognised performers. Led by MWO’s Artistic Directors Richard Studer and Jonathan Lyness, and accompanied by the brilliant Ensemble Cymru, this new production will ensure audiences are left enthralled and deeply moved. OEDIPUS & ANTIGONE Following their critically-acclaimed 2017 tour of Richard III, Beyond The Horizon present their spectacular reimagining of Sophocles’ greatest works, Oedipus And Antigone. Oedipus is a murder-mystery in its most twisted of forms. Thebes is suffering from a brutal plague. The gods demand that the killer of the old king Laius must be brought to justice. King Oedipus steps forward to uncover the truth, but in doing so reveals a nightmarish prophecy decades in the making… Years later, Antigone tells the story of Oedipus’ children. Eteocles and Polyneices have killed each other fighting for the crown. The state rules that Polyneices be left to rot, while Eteocles is given full burial honours. Whoever disobeys this order will be punished with death. In defiance, Antigone stands alone against the state, challenging the power of the law with the unwritten law of the gods… 0
