WELCOME
Welcome to our 25th Anniversary autumn season here at The Courtyard...
And what a season it promises to be! The 18 September 2023 marks 25 years since The Courtyard opened its doors – a fantastic achievement that we’re extremely proud of. We have seen many changes, and challenges, over the years, not least the pandemic and the devastation that it caused. However, The Courtyard remains strong and resilient and continues to be a much loved part of the Herefordshire community. Despite all the changes and challenges we have faced, our ethos remains the same; to put the community at the heart of everything we do. We create and inspire artistic excellence locally and nationally and build opportunities for everyone to enjoy through participation, diversity and inclusion. Our 25th Anniversary will see many fantastic shows and events at this very special arts centre, in the heart of Hereford. We will be celebrating this landmark with a 25th Anniversary Celebration Showcase on Saturday 23 September (p.17). Book your tickets now, as this event is sure to sell out very quickly.
I am also delighted to announce that we will be staging a very special production of The Secret Garden. This is a story of 10-year-old orphan, Mary Lennox and her search for friendship, love and understanding of the past in her lonely uncle’s locked garden. It has been dramatised for the stage, the screen, radio and television, but never before has it been so fully and imaginatively realised, as it will be on the stage of The Courtyard.
The Courtyard has been producing top-quality award-winning pantomimes for many years, and this year will be no exception. For the first time in 12 years, we are staging the purr-fect pantomime treat for all the family to enjoy. Full of sparkle, excitement, fun and packed with dazzling dance, magical song and music, Dick Whittington and his famous cat is sure to leave you wanting more! The Courtyard pantos have been nominated as one of the best 5 pantomimes in the UK Pantomime Awards year after year, and Estelle van Warmelo, our Panto Director, won the Best Director Award at a ceremony in London this April for her direction of Beauty and the Beast (2022). An amazing achievement we can all be proud of. On behalf of us all at The Courtyard, thank you for your support, and I do hope that you will join us for some of the fantastic shows we have on stage or throughout our anniversary celebrations. Also, watch out for our 25th Anniversary Grand Draw and you could win one of four cash prizes: 1st Prize £1000, 2nd Prize £500 and 3rd/4th prizes of £250. Sit back, relax and enjoy everything that The Courtyard has to offer.
Very best wishes,
Ian Archer, Chief Executive and Artistic Director Cinderella December 1998Give the gift of an experience to remember!

pay what you decide NEW!
We are delighted to be introducing Pay What You Decide at The Courtyard!
Pay What You Decide allows you to book tickets to a show for free, and then decide what you would like to pay after you have watched the performance. We want to encourage more people to come and see shows at The Courtyard, more often. Pay What You Decide not only allows you to pay what you can afford, rather than a fixed ticket price, but also removes the financial risk of buying a ticket for a show in advance without knowing whether you are going to enjoy it or not. This season’s PWYD show is on page 16.
How does it work?
Tickets are available to book in advance as usual, online or via Box Office, but there is no obligation for you to pay until after you have seen the performance. You can then decide on a price which you think is suitable based on your experience! At the end of the show, our Stewards will be on the door to take payments via cash or card.
All money collected will help The Courtyard pay the artists who have performed, and we therefore hope you will give generously!
GIVE MORE, GET MORE
By becoming a Friend or Patron you will be helping to support key community projects with young and older people in Herefordshire, as well as helping us continue to be the cultural heart of our county.

So, what’s “home”? That’s the question Ana, a young Croatian woman, poses as she settles in the UK. Croatian born, she’s arrived in the UK, determined to make it home. She is haunted by the voice of her Grandma - calling for her to stay true to national identity and yearning for Ana to come home. Pepper & Honey is a poignant, subtle and timely play about the journey of change, cultural differences, trying not to feel like a foreigner in your adopted country, and the conflict between upholding the traditions of the “old country” and embracing those of the new.
