One of the great joys of my role here at The Courtyard is heading up a team of dedicated staff who work tirelessly to bring to our stages such a diverse range of performances for you to see. The autumn season is always one of our busiest, and this year will by no means disappoint I am sure! Some of the highlights for me are the outstanding Afrovibes Festival in October bringing six of the best South African productions to us. We also have visits from City of London Sinfonia, National Dance Company of Wales, Mid Wales Opera and Eliza Carthy. As Christmas approaches I am sure our pantomime, Dick Whittington, will once again be enchanting patrons. I know that I can rely on our amazing production team to bring you the usual thrills and spills, magic and laughter that have become associated with the festive season. A family Christmas in Herefordshire is just not complete without a visit to The Courtyard’s pantomime! I am also delighted to let you all know that the Arts Council are supporting us to develop our fundraising efforts. They are offering us the opportunity to secure match funding from them if we are able to stimulate new gifts from donors. We have a target of £114,000 to raise by June 2015 which will bring an additional £171,000 from the Arts Council. It is a very welcome boost to our fundraising campaign and we are very grateful to them for their vote of confidence. I hope that many of you will feel that you are able to help us reach our target whether that is in a large or small way. Thank you, as ever, for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at The Courtyard. Martyn Green, Chief Executive

Following on from the success of Sleeping Beauty, this year’s pantomime promises to be bigger and better with even more sparkles! Dick Whittington is a traditional story and a firm family favourite of how a young boy and his feline friend set out on a mission to find a fortune. When Dick arrives in London he finds a job and falls in love. All seems rosy until he meets some pesky rats, led by the villainous King Rat, who aim to stop Dick on his quest!

MOTHER TO MOTHER American Fullbright scholar Amy Biehl is killed in the Gugulethu township of Cape Town: it’s a senseless murder, carried out by four youths. The mother of one of them tries to make sense of it all by recounting events in an imaginary conversation with Amy’s mother. It’s a real ‘heart to heart’ communication of personal testimony in an imaginary response to this real event. This solo performance draws upon the skills of three powerhouse women of the arts in South Africa. Music interwoven with the text heightens the mood as the tragedy unfolds, and the use of the Xhosa indigenous language in parallel with English lends a gritty authenticity.

‘Inception’, originally performed in 2011, is a complex, textured dance solo, that has already evolved into a classic. It’s an intensely physical and psychological journey into the psyche of a female artist. As the brooding sound of the Taj Mahal Travellers’ music reverberates around the darkened auditorium, a presence emerges from the wings: a beautiful body lit by its headgear. The figure in this mining helmet / straw hat / diving gear turns out to be a woman, whose gazelle-like movement pulls her into a succinctly layered universe of experience.

music, theatre and dance straight from the heart of africa

SATURDAY 20 OCTOBER 7.30PM

& MY EXILE IS IN MY HEAD ‘My Exile is in my Head’ is a solo dance / physical theatre piece inspired by Wole Soyinka’s prison notes, ‘The Man Died’. Qudus Onikeku, from Nigeria, explores the theme of solitude and forms of exile, looking especially at the contradiction between our mental idea of ‘home’ and the reality of the place one returns to. This fascinating work is sophisticated, slick and wonderfully enjoyable, filled with angst, beauty, resignation, acrobatic moves, high energy and a spirituality summed up in the voice-over: ‘When I dance I am closer to God.’

THIRST

‘Thirst’ depicts the fortunes and misfortunes of three water carriers from an African village that has run out of water. On an eventful journey to find the source of their dried-out river they encounter mysterious characters, riddles and provocations. This is magical, innovative theatre based on Baldini’s The Water Carriers: a mythic tale resonating with both past and future, its ecological message chiming with our times. It’s enriched by dance, physical theatre, song and African storytelling. Suitable for families, age 7+

‘And the Girls…’ is the story of two characters, The Woman and The Lady, who meet during a long wait in a queue to buy cheap rice. The Woman, an uncomplicated domestic worker, has brought her chair with her; The Lady, a retired prostitute, who considers herself a sophisticated woman of the world, has brought her lunch. Thus the two become interdependent, in a kind of female ‘Waiting for Godot’, where the act of waiting becomes far more important than its expected result. The women discover they have more in common than initially meets the eye. As they wait, they share their respective stories and heartbreaks, and resolve to stop waiting and seize control of their lives. Finely balanced dramatic and comic moments encourage us to consider how to respond to the human dilemmas facing us all.

HEREFORD MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY PRESENT

TUESDAY 6 NOVEMBER 8PM

EMMIE TALBOYS (GALLERY) Emmie Talboys’ paintings are created mostly using traditional methods and materials, she begins with a thread of narrative, some found images and wraps it all together with the concept of identity. ‘My interest is humanity, how personal histories, gender roles, childhood attachments and our own personal value serve as a foundation to construct our identity. When considering identity there are many variables which when compiled create someone unique yet with striking quantities of sameness.’

CLARE SMITH (UPPER AND LOWER CANYON)

Clare’s practice is centred in quiet questioning of photography’s ultimate dependence on the tangible, physical world to make images. Through translation of physical subjects Clare interprets intangible elements. Working with the spatial and perceptual such as horizons, depth and surface, she considers how the understanding of environments in our perception and consciousness is changed when presented with a subtle difference in vision, understanding and emotion through her photographs.

CAI BROOM (UPPER AND LOWER CANYON)

Cai Broom is a photographer who lives and works in Hereford. His work is largely based around environmental and social issues and is often process led, using a mixture of digital and traditional techniques.
