The Seagull Four Chekhov fanatics leap into action. Eager to emulate their favourite characters, their enthusiasm and innocence breathes new life into the lives of Arkadina, the self-obsessed, famous actress, her tormented son, Konstantin, and their lovers. Chekhov’s characters consistently create their own tragedy, rejecting love that is freely given and seeking it where it is withheld. And there lurks the comedy, dark and bitter though it may be. What starts as a game turns deadly serious.

Chris Ramsey What is it with us and smallness? We Brits love it being tiny but fierce, close but distant. This Jedwardhaired award-winning t**t is the same, and he returns with a new blisteringly big-small show. Watch him ejaculate thoughts about smallness; on keeping things small when life gets big. ‘A seriously good comedian.’ The Times ‘Russell Kane delivers magic in spades.’ The Scotsman ‘A smart, probing brain lurks below the vertiginous quiff’ The Evening Standard

After being “sent off” the Soccer AM sofa last year for misbehaving, Chris wonders whether he really is the Most Dangerous Man on Saturday Morning TV – not to mention, whether he wants to be. Fresh from a complete sell-out, twice extended 2012 tour, multiple appearances on Celebrity Juice and 8 Out of 10 Cats, and a starring role in BBC Two’s Hebburn, Chris embarks on a brand new tour for 2013/2014. Taking his brush with on air censorship as a jumping off point to muse on life, mistakes, expectation and offense, he examines what happens when you say the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Senior Youth Theatre and Vamos Young People’s Theatre have both been working on intergenerational projects to uncover the wonderfully rich and diverse stories in all of us but specifically from the older generation. As part of this project both youth theatre groups have been going into residential care homes to meet the residents and from the stories they have uncovered, created a piece of theatre. All true, all based around the lives of those so close to us and all full of live, lose and love. The Courtyard’s Senior Youth Theatre using a script writer to interweave the stories and Vamos using Masks, but the simple similarity is that they are both based on true stories. This will be an unforgettable night where the stories from the old are performed by the young!

Returning home - Alison Leigh

Home Sweet Home – Gillian Parsons

This is a play about a family member who returns after four years having a traumatic life changing experience.

The play, Home Sweet Home, is a comment on the impact of the recently introduced bedroom tax. It touches on the life of a recently bereaved woman charting her journey from receiving bad news onwards. It describes her attempts to manage her new situation and the changes of circumstances she experiences along the way.

The Reason I’m Here – Karen Curry I will not do ‘tick-the-box-job-done-neatand-tidy. I will do messy and dirty and devious….’ So declares Max, forensic scientist, stuck on an Iron Age hill fort, trying to make sense out of what’s led her there. Is it because of some ‘poor old sod’ illegally languishing in the mortuary? Or does it run deeper?

The Mammoth Trap – Penelope Simcock The Mammoth Trap is a short play in 10 scenes with adult content. It is set in a future when the scale and social consequences of past abuses have been recognised. Each of the 10 short scenes relates to an aspect of the life of a woman who was abused in late childhood and early adolescence. The woman is participating in a form of therapy which helps her to explore some of the less painful of her poignant memories. The play looks at the impact of intrafamilial abuse on young people and what happens when adults fail to recognise and respond to child abuse.

A paranormal investigator, acting on a tip-off from his researcher, goes to look at a house to feature on his tv show. Unknown to him, the ancient Lady of the house has called back her sons for a special meeting. The two parties collide with surprising and supernatural results as cold-blooded murder and old secrets are unearthed.

The Good One’s Go First – Tony Hobbs The play takes place in Reg’s dugout and also at his home in Edmonton. While showing what his life was like and how he died, it also shows how his death impacted on the three main women in his life - his mother, Bessie, his sister Kathy, and his fiancee, Emma. Their reactions vary from a mother’s guilt in letting her under-age son join up to a lover’s anguish on her loss and a life with no future. Saturday 12th July 7:15pm

The Rossville Barricade – Anthony Jenkins Set in County Derry Northern Ireland in 1972 the country is in a lifelong battle against religious disputes and British tyranny. In the midst of this civil war the ‘Derry Young Hooligans’ plot to make a stand against the British Army during a Civil Rights march. An evening with Ann Widdecombe

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner

Hailed by Songlines Magazine as ‘another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool moment´, Peter Knight’s Gigspanner continues to engage hearts and minds with emotionally loaded and lifeenriching takes on British traditional and world music. Steeleye Span’s legendary fiddle player is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on congas and djembe.

After her success on Strictly Come Dancing and her panto debut alongside Craig Revel Horwood, Ann Widdicombe is on something of a roll. Her An Audience With... appearances prove endlessly popular - and no wonder! How often can you hear a former Shadow Home Secretary revealing what life is really like at the centre (well OK, right of centre) of British politics? She had a formidable reputation in Parliament and remains relentlessly outspoken. However, live on stage Ann is engaging, entertaining and refreshingly down to earth. An unmissable evening, which definitely has ‘something of the night’ about it.

Angela Gladwell

Originally from Woodford in east London, Angela Gladwell studied at the Royal College of Art and has lived in Herefordshire for the last thirteen years. Her paintings develop an interest in nature and a particular engagement with beaches and the changing conditions of the shoreline.

Working in traditional textile arts such as sewing, embroidery, knitting and appliqué, Kate Ganderton, Herefordshire-based art-doll maker, creates one-of-a-kind art dolls from found and given textiles and up-cyled ribbons, beads, buttons and wool. The sources of these materials are important as the memories and influences of the material’s original owners inform the construction of the dolls. The bespoke nature of the dolls allows for the creation of individual and often unexpected characteristics, giving each doll a personality that belies its size. Kate Ganderton has a dual involvement in theatre and the visual arts, and works within the Education and Outreach Team at the Courtyard Centre For the Arts.

Ann Campbell’s work reflects her lifelong interest in animals. Her practice is based on observation and ideas of the archetype. She has travelled extensively, from an early childhood spent in Malaya and Italy to more recent explorations in China, South Africa and Sri Lanka. She has taught at Malvern College, Breden School and Hereford College of Art. She has exhibited widely and her work is held in public and private collections, in the UK and abroad.

Paul Davies Photographs: Paul Davies spent many years working internationally in the film industry including developing important continuity techniques which are still in use. Following this career, Davies suffered a stroke, which confined him to wheelchair. Throughout his life he has been involved with photography, and has, by necessity, shifted his viewpoint, his recent work focussing on a relatively narrow set of interests: working practices, structures, local towns and the working lives of their inhabitants. For this exhibition at the Courtyard, the viewer will be able to see things from this changed viewpoint, and to re-assess the ordinary from Davies’ perspective.

Due to maintenance the exhibitions area will be closed from Sun 3 August until Sunday 10 August.

15 YEARS

Help us continue our vital work in Herefordshire!

The Courtyard is not just an Arts Centre. We are an active charity working with all sectors of the community. Our community arts delivery is a major part of our strategy as Herefordshire’s Centre for the Arts; our work with older people, particularly focusing on those with dementia, is now widely acclaimed, with growing reach into local care homes and community centres. We are a member of the national Dementia Alliance, and are actively encouraging organisations throughout Herefordshire to become ‘dementia friendly’ as we are. At the other end of the spectrum, our work with young people engages with more than 80% of local schools. Our Youth Theatre 400 young people aged between four to twenty every week, is more dynamic and innovative than ever, producing high quality live performances every year attended by many local people. The Courtyard is all about increasing opportunities and improving the quality of people’s lives , their life skills and prospects, through engagement with the arts. However, we cannot do this alone. Much of this work is funded externally by individuals like you, and we need to continue to ask to make sure that this invaluable programme supporting local people is sustainable for the future.

PLEASE SUPPORT US NOW! There are lots of ways to give: at Box office (01432 340555), online at www.courtyard.org.uk, by cheque (please make out to The Courtyard and send to Lucy Wells, The Courtyard, Edgar St, HR4 9JR). Don’t forget you can gift aid your donation, giving us 25p in every £ donated, at no extra cost to you.

WHAT YOUR DONATION COULD FUND: • £5 will pay for the materials for 20 children to do an all day Summer Holiday workshop • £30 will pay for a term’s bursary in one of our outreach youth theatres, giving financial support to local children to learn new life skills through drama • £300 pays for care staff training sessions to develop creative activities allowing older adults in care homes direct access to participatory arts • £750 would pay for a local young person to pursue an acting career with a National Youth Theatre Bursary • £1000 will pay for a 10 week residency in a care home for a dementia specialist poet to lead a 2 hour session each week. • £5000 pays for a year’s weekly Extend dance sessions for groups of older people across 6 rural Herefordshire locations
